Nichols, N.Y. May 29, 2008
– Pugnacious Promotions returns to the
Twin Tiers with a boxing card* featuring two
undefeated prospects in tough, eight-round fights
and an undercard of local favorites Friday,
May 29th at Tioga Downs Racing, Gaming and Entertainment,
just outside Binghamton, N.Y. In feature fights,
undefeated light welterweight prospect Wayland
Willingham (13-0, 8 KOs), Albany, N.Y., faces
hard-punching gatekeeper Doell Carrasquillo
(11-7, 9 KOs), Lancaster, Penn., and undefeated
heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (7-0, 5 KOs), Newburgh,
N.Y., takes on tough veteran Jason Bergman (7-5,
4 KOs), Pittsburgh. Penn.
Willingham, who is back home
in Albany training for the next phase of his
promising career, won four out of his last five
fights by exciting KO. He is stepping up in
eight and 10-round bouts and hopes to challenge
for a regional title in his next few fights.
Carrasquillo, a native of Puerto Rico, is a
power-punching gatekeeper who has nine KOs in
11 wins. He challenged six undefeated opponents
in his seven-year professional career and has
faced opponents with a combined record of 124-29
overall.
Aguilera, a former two-time
Golden Glove title winner with over 120 amateur
fights, will fight his first eight-round bout
against his toughest opponent yet. Bergman has
faced five undefeated opponents in his two years
as a pro and upset then-undefeated South Carolina
prospect Moultrie Witherspoon (14-1, 10 KOs)
in his last fight.
The undercard will feature
local fighters from the Twin Tiers region, including
the youngest member of Ithaca, N.Y.'s boxing
dynasty, middleweight Willie Monroe, Jr. (1-0,
1 KO), Binghamton, N.Y.’s own cruiserweight
John Mitchell (15-12, 14 KOs) and Conklin, N.Y.
light heavyweight Daren Graham (1-1, 1 KO).
“I’m thrilled
to help return pro fights to the Twin Tiers
and Tioga Downs,” said Lisa Elovich, president,
Pugnacious Promotions. “This beautiful,
outdoor venue will provide an excellent backdrop
for high-quality feature fights and exciting
undercard with local favorites.”
The Twin Tiers has a rich
boxing history. Hall of Fame heavyweight champion
Jack Sharkey, the only man to fight both Jack
Dempsey and Joe Louis, was born and raised in
Binghamton. Many local fans also remember fight
cards at the Kaluhra Temple in the 40s-50s –
featuring all-time greats like Carmen Basilio
– and fights at the Broome County Arena
in past decades. Hudson Valley world featherweight
champion Tracy Harris Patterson won an NABF
belt there in 1990.
