Amateur boxers from the Joe Hand Boxing Gym in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia turned in very strong performances over the weekend at the 15th annual Ringside World Championships held at the Independence Events Center in Independence, MO.
Shamar Fulton, 19, and Kyree Williams, 11, both earned world titles, while Eli Knight, 11, finished as a silver medalist.
Considered to be the largest amateur boxing tournament in the world, the Ringside World Championships featured more than 1,500 boxers representing all 50 states and 10 countries competing in 62 divisions.
Fulton (9-2 record) took top honors in the Men’s Senior Novice Division for ages 19 to 40 at 141 pounds. Fulton entered the tournament with a 5-2 record and was just one of two 19-year-olds competing in a division dominated by much older fighters in their 20s and 30s.
Williams (5-0 record) earned his world championship in the Boy’s Bantam Novice Division for ages 11 to 12 at 70 pounds.
Also competing in the 11 to 12 age group, Knight (3-2 record) took silver in the Boy’s Bantam Novice Division at 85 pounds.
The Ringside World Championships represented the first tournament for all three boxers, who had four fights on four consecutive days from Wednesday, August 5 to Saturday, August 8.
“They really brought it” said Danny Davis, head trainer at the Joe Hand Boxing Gym. “They really worked hard to earn a tremendous accomplishment. We couldn’t be prouder.”
