The Davie PAL in Davie Florida has produced elite champions for years under the watchful eye of legendary coach, the late Peter Balcunas. Many champions and such names as Teofimo Lopez, Xander Zayas. Now with the conclusion of the 2021 USA Boxing Nationals in Shreveport, Louisiana, New head coach Rob Nonies, a protege of Balcunas, has crowned its newest Champion Super Heavyweight Lorenzo Medina. Medina won two competitive matches in the tournament to bring home the gold and the number #1 ranking in the Youth Super Heavyweight Division
Lorenzo’s first win came against Braulio Arcos-Rodriguez of Chicago, Illinois scoring a Unanimous decision, 5-0. In the Championship bout, Lorenzo faced Frederico Pacheco out of Los Angeles, California. Lorenzo won 4:1 to take home the national title. Medina captured the hearts of many spectators as he was the smaller boxer in both matches. Medina’s father Alex Lopez and DAVIE PAL assistant coach Wilgen Vasquez were in the corner of Medina for both matches.
Nonies has coached Medina since he was 8 years old. Medina who is now just 17 years old had his first competitive boxing match in 2019. Now after only 12 fights he has now put himself on track for top ELITE Ratings with a #1rannking in the Youth Division. Medina supplements his training at Bay to Bay Boxing in Hollywood Florida with professional boxing trainers Coach Jeff Poritz & Coach Kevin Gleason from and Stay Ready Boxing.
