Kohl’s Heats Up Competition among Retailers.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News March 10, 2003 By Joseph Ascenzi, The Business Press, Ontario, Calif. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Mar. 10–Kohl’s department store is expected to generate $200,000 to $250,000 a year in sales tax revenue for La Verne, one of 28 Southern California cities where the Wisconsin-based chain officially opened stores March 7.
That coming infusion of cash is good news for La Verne, which last summer lost its Kmart store at 1600 Foothill Blvd., said Hal Fredericksen, the city’s director of community development.
Not only will La Verne make up for some of the sales tax revenue it lost when the Kmart folded, Kohl’s presence will make finding a tenant for the vacant Kmart building easier, Fredericksen said.
That building is owned by PDA Surplus Co. in Arcadia, which finds store locations for the Vons grocery store chain. But Vons already operates two successful stores in La Verne, and the company is looking for other retail tenants to locate there, Fredericksen said. in our site kohls coupons printable
Cities receive 1 percent of a businesses gross revenues in the form of sales tax revenue, so by Fredericksen’s tabulation, the Kohl’s store in La Verne will generate $20 million to $25 million a year in sales.
Kohl’s stores on average generate about $283 a square foot in sales, according to the company’s financial report for 2001 filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
With the new Kohl’s store just down the street, at 2229 Foothill Blvd., Fredericksen believes the chances of filling the Kmart space by the end of the year have improved.
With the arrival of Kohl’s — which like the other 27 Kohl’s stores in the region held a “soft” opening the week before its official opening — La Verne now has five major retail stores along Foothill Boulevard: Marshall’s, Target, Orchard Supply Hardware, Stein Mart and Kohl’s, Fredericksen said.
“Successful retail attracts successful retail, just like successful restaurants attract successful restaurants,” Fredericksen said. “We think there’s some pent-up demand for more retail in La Verne.” Kohl’s officials are counting on a pent-up demand for their product, which is aimed primarily at women age 25 to 54 who shop for their families, spokeswoman Tawn Earnest said.
Kohl’s officials spent about 15 months preparing for the simultaneous opening of the 28 stores.
Each store employs about 150 people, Earnest said.
Kohl’s waged a newspaper, billboard and radio advertising blitz that began in January, though Earnest declined to discuss the cost of the campaign. go to web site kohls coupons printable
Opening all of the stores at once, Earnest said, was designed to create “word-of-mouth” advertising among potential customers and to get the most out of the advertising campaign.
“We don’t want people hearing about us on television and then wondering if the store close to them is opening,” she said.
Kohl’s inventory is “above Mervyn’s and not quite Macy’s,” said Shelli Erickson, an audit manager who specializes in consumer business for Deloitte & Touche in Costa Mesa.
“I think they’re going to bleed into Mervyn’s market share over time,” Erickson said. “Over time, I think [Kohl’s] will have a lot of appeal in this market.” Besides the La Verne store, Kohl’s Southern California debut included two stores in Corona and one store each in Chino Hills, Fontana, Temecula, Murrieta, Ontario, Redlands and Riverside.
