Local hero Mikaela Lauren and Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes are ready for tonight’s battle for the vacant WBC Female World superwelterweight championship in Vasteras, Sweden. At yesterday’s weigh-in both contender were well inside the limit with Lauren bringing 69.4 kg (153 lbs) to the scale while Magdziak Lopes was a little lighter at 69.0 kg (152 lbs).
“It has always been my dream to fight for the Green and Gold belt – the only price that counts in boxing” said Mikaela Lauren. “This is the title which has been held by Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson – as well as by great female champions like Laila Ali.”
Lauren is entering the fight with a tremendous record of 22 wins and only three defeats with one of those losses coming against supreme welterweight ruler Cecilia Braekhus in a world title fight in 2010. Her co-challenger Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes has won 10 of her 14 pro fights with two losses (against Kali Reis and Tori Nelson) and two draws. Magdziak Lopes was born in Gliwice (Poland) but is fighting out of Marshfield (USA) were she works as an attorney when she’s not fighting or training in the gym.
The WBC Female superwelterweight championship has been vacated by Tiffany Junot after she won the title from Mia St. John in November 2012. The title has also been held by Christy Martin (2009) and Jisselle Salandy who made five successful title defenses in Trinidad and Tobago between 2006 and 2008.
The world championship fight between Lauren and Magdziak Lopes headlines an event labeled “Fighting Spirit” which will be available live worldwide as online pay-per-view on https://fightingspirit.solidtango.com/
