Knocking Out the Devil

Warriors step into the ring or the cage to do battle, some fight internal battles, few fight both and live to tell their story. On that rare occurrence, that story needs to be told.

Jason “Freebird” Freeman is a husband, father, professional athlete and also the grandson of one Charles Manson and this is his life story. The book was penned by Dannon Svab, owner of the Ohio-based Explosive Fight Promotions organization that has promoted many “Caged Madness” events.

“Jason’s story is one of life, survival and dedication, in today’s world many of our role models are distorted….Jason’s story can make a difference in people’s lives.” said Svab.

An introduction to the book:

““Uh yeah, I got a kid somewhere.” Charles Manson said in a 1981 interview on, Tomorrow with Tom Snyder. The child he was referring to was Jason Freeman’s natural father, Charles Manson Jr. He later became known as Jay White, but it was more like a cover. Hiding the heinous birthday name his own father tarnished.

Manson was the family’s real surname.

Freeman’s natural father missed Jason growing up. Writing an occasional letter was his only involvement. Never talking face-to-face, Freeman didn’t understand what was going on with his natural father.

Freeman, later would learn more and begin to understand the impact of Charles Manson directing the most horrific Hollywood murders ever. His natural father was unable to withstand the shadow of Charles Manson that ultimately claimed his life. Freeman knew part of that same intense shadow hovered over him, but he decided to fight back.”

Leave No Vet Behind Results

“Shocking”, “Elegant”, “Wow”! Were the common terms used by fans as they entered the black tie and white tablecloth LaVilla Banquet Center this past Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio. Newhouse Promotions held it first installment of the Leave No Vet Behind Boxing Series. The promotion is headed by Tim Van Newhouse a former accomplished prize fighter and United States Air force Veteran. “I wanted to accomplish two goals with this promotion. The first is to give back to the homeless and jobless veterans in the area and second to bring boxing back to Cleveland.”

The LaVilla Banquet Center was decorated with all of the luxury amenities that you would expect to find at a Las Vegas Show. We asked one fan what he thought of the décor of the show “I walked in to marble floors, hosts in tuxedos, white table cloths with appetizers already on the table, and a beautiful boxing ring in the middle of all of it, I had to check my ticket because I thought I was at the Pacquiao fight.”

The lights dimmed, the sold out crowd settled and fans were treated to a 5 bout card that left fans cheering on their feet and wanting for more.

The main event saw Cleveland’s own Mark “Too Sharp” Davis (16-0, 5 KOs) remain undefeated with a 10 round unanimous decision over Buffalo’s Guillermo “Vampire” Sanchez (14-3-1, 5 KOs). Davis dominated the fight from the opening to the closing bell and has now placed himself in line for a championship bout.

The co-main event saw “The Pride of Lorain” Wilkins Santiago (4-0, 1 KO) maintain his perfect record with a 6 round unanimous decision over Marcus “TNT” Washington (5-6-1 2 KO). Santiago effectively used his jab to keep his opponent off balance throughout the duration of the fight. Santiago advanced his career to another level with this victory. Look for Wilkins to capture his 7th victory in December.

The remaining undercard saw:

Angel “El Fuego” Figuersora (1-0) def. 4/SD “Ravishing” Larenzo Wilson (1-1)

Ela “Bam Bam” Nulez (10-8 2 KO) def. 4/SD Carla “Star” Torres (3-2)

Antonio Nieves (1-0) def. 4/UD DeWayne Wisdom (1-1 I KO)

Crabtree was moments away from having the fight stopped. Many in the sold out crowd felt that Crabtree’s corner would not let their fighter continue. Firtha Retains United States Title

Northeast Ohio does not have to look any further to see a champion. We have Nick “The Stoneman” Firtha. The Akron native, who also calls Cleveland home, retained his NABA United States Heavyweight Championship and also captured the Ohio State heavyweight Championship with a 10 round majority decision over Mike Shepherd. Both fighters fought a championship level fight but it was Firtha’s non-stop aggression that brought him to victory. Firtha hurt Shepherd throughout the fight but Shepherd’s martial arts training and natural granite chin kept the West Virginia strong man on his feet. Firtha stuck to his game plan, controlled the pace, and concentrated on Shepherd’s body to wear him down. This was a true match up of boxer vs. fighter with the boxer coming out on top. This was the first defense of Firtha’s title. Following the fight both fighters acknowledged each other’s will, strength and determination. Firtha, being a gracious champion, offered words of praise for his defeated opponent. Being a champion is not always about wins and losses, it is about conduct and sportsmanship. Both Firtha & Shepherd emulated the qualities of a champion. Firtha’s future is bright with potential title fights on the horizon. Rumors of a world title shot are beginning to circulate for early 2011.

The co-feature saw Junior Middleweight Dante Moore stay undefeated but add a draw to his record as he was tested by Corey Rodriquez.

Fan favorite Wilkins “The Hispanic Hurricane” Santiago improved to 2-0 (1ko) with a second round stoppage over Matt Keglovic. Santiago fought conventional and southpaw keeping his opponent off balance and allowing Santiago to land at will. Santiago showed improvement from his first victory as he was sharp not only on his offence but on his defense as utilized his head movement and crisp counterpunching.

Jason Massie improved to 6-0 (4ko) with a 4 round unanimous decision over Mujaheed Moor.

Cleveland’s Michael Moore remained perfect 3-0 (3ko) with a 4th round tko over Eric Draper.

The fights were held at the Nautica Pavilion by Warner Promotions. In only their 3rd show they have been showcased on ESPN and are pitting the best on the world for the fans of the Sweet Science. Look for their return in late 2010 with another action packed championship card.

Porter decision Jordan in Cleveland

Shawn “Showtime” Porter was crowned the new NABO Jr. Middleweight Champion with a 10 round decision over Russel “Spiderman” Jordan. Many at ringside belived that this would be a easy knockout for Porter although Jordan saw it differently. Jordan rocked his smaller oppenent at times with Porter’s eye being left eye bloodied from an accidental head butt in the fifth round. A tactical fight and a great test for the new champion.
Tom Miller and Phil Rogers each had it for Porter, 97-92, with Gene Glen calling it a shutout, 100-89. Porter improves to 13-0, 10 KO’s and Jordan dropps to 15-7, 10 KO.

*Referee Randy Jarvis took a point away from Jordan in the 9th round as he lost his mouthpiece for a second time in the round, judging it a delaying tactic.*

Lanard “The Fireman” Lane improved to 11-0 (7 KOs) with an eight-round unanimous decision against welterweight Martin Tucker (7-5, 3 KOs) of Toledo.

2008 Olympian Gary Russel Jr. remined at 7-0 4 KO with a 1st round knockout over Jario Delgado 3-5 3 KO

In the night’s opening bout, 200-pounders Brian Cook from Northfield and Justin Riegle from Orrville put on a four-round slugfest. What it lacked in style was made up for in tenacity as neither man would give in to some heavy punching. Cook (3-4, 2 KOs), went down twice in the third round. Riegle (3-3, 1 KO) got the unanimous decision.

IBO responds to Mundine situation

Anthony Mundine’s decision to forego a quest for the International Boxing Organization’s junior middleweight title next week in Australia is his own – and not based on undue influence or conflict from the IBO – according to its president, Ed Levine.

Mundine had been scheduled to meet Robert Medley for the IBO’s vacant 154-pound championship on Jan. 11 in Sydney, but the fight – if held at all – will no longer be for the IBO belt and is more likely to be fought at middleweight, Levine said.

A Jan. 6 report in the Sydney Morning Herald cited Mundine’s displeasure with the IBO stemming from review of his May defeat of Daniel Geale for the organization’s 160-pound title – which Mundine relinquished upon requesting sanction for the 154-pound bout with Medley.

Levine, however, said it’s more likely Mundine’s decision is based on other factors.

“Our opinion is that Mundine’s current failure to honor his contractual obligations to the IBO and Medley are purely based on his inability to make the weight and/or his reluctance to accept two international officials and the costs attendant to putting on a world title fight,” Levine said.

Mundine defeated Geale by split decision to win the IBO middleweight belt. According to Levine, an appeal to the IBO from Geale’s management resulted in a review of the bout by three “senior IBO judges,” which then resulted in a narrow split decision opinion in Geale’s favor.

Some reports, including the Sydney Morning Herald’s, erroneously indicated that a unanimous decision in Geale’s direction after the review would have mandated the original decision be overturned.

“That is total nonsense and completely incorrect. The IBO would never overturn an official result,” Levine said. “What was said by the IBO is that if the three appeals judges ‘unanimously and clearly by a wide margin’ scored the bout for Geale, title recognition could be withdrawn or an immediate rematch ordered.

“A mere close unanimous re-scoring of the contest would have led to Geale being made a mandatory fight for Mundine. Effectively, the close re-scoring getting a narrow split decision to Geale resulted in the same decision, a mandatory position for Geale but not in an immediate and direct rematch. Mundine was given the opportunity for an intervening optional defense.”

Levine said fights will be scheduled soon to fill the vacancies at 154 and 160 pounds.
