Cohen Congratulates McCalla and Luis for ShoBox Victories Friday Night

Tony Luis
After co-promoting (along with GH3 Promotions) the historic 200th episode of “SHOBOX: The New Generation,” last Friday, July 25, at the Turning Stone Resort Casino, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions wishes to congratulate his two victorious fighters, Cecil McCalla and Tony Luis.

Welterweight McCalla (19-0, 6 KOs), of Randallstown, Maryland, won a dominating eight-round unanimous decision over Watsonville, California’s Oscar Godoy (13-3, 6 KOs), while Canada’s “The Lightning” Luis (18-2, 7 KOs) handed Newark, New Jersey’s Wanzell “Venom” Ellison (11-1-1, 5 KOs) his first defeat via unanimous decision in a lightweight eight-rounder.

While many experts had predicted McCalla would be in tough against the capable Godoy, McCalla made it look easy and cruised to a wide unanimous decision with only one judge giving Godoy even a round. Scores were 80-72, 80-72 and 79-73.

McCalla’s clever upper body movement and lead right hand backed up and befuddled Godoy, backing him to the ropes and slowing the Californian’s work rate to minimal levels.

Luis, of Cornwall, Ontario, was considered an underdog in his battle against formerly undefeated Ellison, but stuck to his game plan and worked the body to great effect. Ellison had a few moments in the middle rounds, but the determined Luis wrested back control and cruised to the victory by scores of 79-73, 77-75 and 78-74.

“Both of my fighters were given strong tests and both passed with flying colors,” said Greg Cohen. “Cecil’s performance was strong enough to solidify him as someone to watch in the welterweight division, which is something I’ve known for a long time. And Tony Luis came back from a questionable loss to show what he’s learned since then. He stuck to the strategy the team laid out for him and reignited his career with a clear win over a very talented opponent.”

Cohen says he’s already back at work, finding the next step for McCalla and Luis.

“They’ll both be back in high-profile fights very soon. I’m very proud to be working with both of these fighters and they deserve high praise for coming through when tested.”

German commission (BDB) changes result of female world championship Hammer vs. Mathis to “no contest

The German boxing commission (Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer – BDB) officially changed the result of last Saturday’s female world championship between Christina Hammer and Anne Sophie Mathis to a “no contest”. By doing so the BDB followed the ruling of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) which already announced that change yesterday. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) still has to decide about the result.

The reason for the decision: In the fifth round of their WBO-/WBF Junior Middleweight Championship bout Christina Hammer blocked Mathis’ left arm in a clinch. Referee Manfred Küchler didn’t stop the action so Mathis continuously hit Hammer with her free right arm to the left side of her head. Hammer went down from those punches and couldn’t continue.

However, instead of declaring Mathis the winner by KO, referee Küchler disqualified the Frenchwoman for alleged rabbit punches. Later on Hammer said that she was knocked out by elbow shots. The slowmotion clearly showed that there were no illegal punches at all but that Hammer was fouling instead by holding Mathis’ left arm and still got knocked out.

“The BDB is very sorry for this bad decision”, says President Thomas Pütz. “Because it was a world title fight it was not completely under our jurisdiction. Still the referee Manfred Küchler is a BDB referee and we apologize on his behalf. This was clearly no attempt to cheat on Anne Sophie Mathis and her team but just a wrong judgement in the heat of the fight. We all make mistakes – but we got to do our best to correct them. There will be an investigation of the events and a hearing of Manfred Küchler before we decide if he will be suspended. But there is no question that the result of a DQ victory for Hammer has to be changed to a ‘no contest’. This way Anne Sophie Mathis keeps her world champion title and the promoters can negotiation a rematch which would definitely make sense from our side.”

Kovalev-Caparello Undercard 8/9 at Revel

Atlantic City, NJ: Before live audiences at Revel Casino Hotel witness the much-anticipated WBO Light Heavyweight World Championship match-up between the undefeated Russian Wrecking Ball Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 KOs) and the undefeated Australian challenger Blake “Il Capo” Caparello (19-0-1, 6 KOs), they will be treated to a stacked undercard highlighted by the light heavyweight showdown between Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba (22-2-2, 9 KOs) and Cory “Black Ice” Cummings (17-6-1, 13 KOs).

The Chilemba-Cummings fight is an interesting light heavyweight bout. Chilemba, 27, from South Africa, is coming off a brutal ten-round unanimous decision victory over Denis Grachev on March 15th. Cummings is looking to snap a two-fight losing streak. In his last fight he knocked down his opponent, Azea Augustama, in the first round but was narrowly defeated with all three judges scoring the eight-round bout 76-75. Cummings and Chilemba are slated to face each other for ten rounds of light heavyweight action.

Dmitry Mikhaylenko

Another undefeated Russian, Dmitry Mikhaylenko (16-0, 6 KOs) will be featured on the Kovalev-Caparello undercard in a junior middleweight match-up. Mikhaylenko, 28, is from Gelendzhik, Russia and will make his US debut. Prior to this fight, Mikhaylenko fought exclusively in Russia. He will take on Brooklyn native, Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell (26-5, 15 KOs), for eight rounds. In Mikhaylenko’s last fight he defeated Karen Avetisyan via unanimous decision in ten rounds on Feb. 15, 2014. Sechew, a Southpaw, is a 35 year old looking to snap a three fight losing streak and prove he still belongs in the division.

Adam Kownacki
Fan-favorite Adam Kownacki (6-0, 6 KOs), 25, originally from Lomza, Poland and now residing in Brooklyn, NY, returns to Atlantic City for the second time to face Charles Ellis (9-1-1, 8 KOs) of Wichita, KS for six rounds of heavyweight action. In his last fight, the undefeated Kownacki stopped Excell Holmes in the second round on the undercard of the Kovalev-Agnew fight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on March 29th. Ellis is currently riding a three-fight winning streak (all KOs) dating back to Nov. 9, 2013. Both fighters have astounding knockout-to-win ratios, Kownacki 100% and Ellis 89%, so fight should feature non-stop action from bell-to-bell.

DeCarlo Perez

Local prospect, DeCarlo Perez (11-3-1, 4 KOs), 23, of Atlantic City, NJ, is slated to take on Marcus Willis (13-3-2, 3 KOs) for six rounds at light middleweight. In his last fight at Resorts in Atlantic City on January 24, 2014, Perez narrowly lost a split decision (75-77, 77-75, 74-78) to Wilky Campfort. Willis, 27, of Fort Myers, FL, lost his last fight, on June 28, 2013, via unanimous decision in ten rounds in Jacksonville, FL.

Joey Dawejko

In an all-Philly match-up, heavyweights Joey Dawejko (10-3-2, 3 KOs), 24, and David Williams (7-8-2, 2 KOs), 37, face off for eight rounds. Dawejko has won his last two fights. Williams lost a close majority decision in his last fight to Daniel Pasciolla (38-38, 37-39, 37-39) at Bally’s in Atlantic City, NJ on April 12, 2014.

Hakim Bryant

Rich Graessle/Main Events
Finally, the event will open with four rounds of middleweight action in a Jersey vs. Philly match-up between Hakim Bryant (1-0) of Middletown, NJ and Anthony Watson (0-1) of Philadelphia, PA. Bryant made his professional debut at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on June 21st. He defeated Alshamar Johnson with a four round unanimous decision. Watson made his professional debut on June 14, 2013 getting stopped by Arturo Trujillo in the first round at Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA.

Main Events’ matchmaker Jolene Mizzone said about this card, “Every single fight on the undercard has someone from the northeast. It is rare to see a card with so much local talent looking to break into the sport and make a name for themselves. This is a true tri-state area card and should be a real crowd-pleaser because from top to bottom every single fight is a 50-50.”

About Kovalev vs. Caparello:

The WBO Light Heavyweight World Championship between Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, (24-0-1, 22 KOs) and Blake “Il Capo” Caparello (19-0-1, 6 KOs) is on Saturday, August 2nd at Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic, City, NJ. NEW YORK (July 28, 2014) -Last Saturday afternoon in Manhattan, Fight Network hosted a private party at The Ainsworth for media, sponsors and television executives to celebrate its recent launch in the United States on Cablevision’s Optimum TV (channel 464) in the Greater New York area.

Now available in more than 30 countries, Fight Network is a 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports. It airs programs focused on the entire scope of the combat sports genre, including mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing, professional wrestling, traditional martial arts, fight news and analysis, as well as fight-themed drama, reality series, documentaries and feature films. Fight Network’s dynamic programming lineup includes live events from around the world, extensive news coverage and expert analysis.

“This is the culmination of a long process for Fight Network,” Fight Network CEO Leonard Asper said. “We wanted to build a group of sports channels because the fans of those sports were underserved. If golf had its own station, we thought, why not a fight network? Fight Network has been successful in other parts of the world, but we had to be in the U.S. to really make it. Today, we end one chapter and start another, growing from adolescence to adulthood, by launching in New York and being on Broadway where it always belonged. The most important thing to building any successful company is getting the right people. It’s about building a family and today I’d like to introduce the newest member of the Fight Network family, as an adviser/fight analyst, Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini.”

(L-R) – Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini is formally welcomed into the Fight Network family by Leonard Asper as its new adviser/fight analyst

“I’m very excited about Fight Network,” Mancini remarked. “Every type of sport has its own network. Fight Network is all about combat sports and it’s in Europe, Africa and North America. You know, it is also a thrill for me to meet Frankie Edgar today because I’m an MMA fan, too. Fight Network gives attention to athletes from all genres of combat sports. Its potential is unlimited and I hope to be part of Fight Network for a long time.”

In addition to special guests Mancini and Edgar, other supportive fighters in attendance included undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and unbeaten world-rated heavyweight contender Charles Martin.

Asper added that the long-range goal is to give every household in America the opportunity to view Fight Network, noting it will soon be available throughout Texas on Grande Communications, as well as across the U.S. via Roku.

MRI confirms Melson’s Tear; Treatment set for tomorrow!

New York, NY (July 28, 2014) – An MRI confirmed that junior middleweight and West Point graduate Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson suffered a torn supraspinatus. Melson, 14-1-1 (4 KO’s), tore his supraspinatus, which is part of the rotator cuff, preparing for what would’ve been the biggest bout of his professional career against Glen Tapia at Madison Square Garden.

This marks Melson’s third tear since he started boxing, one of which forced him to give up his alternate slot in the 2008 Olympics. Thankfully, his injury won’t require surgery, and he’s receiving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment tomorrow. For the treatment, a small amount of blood is drawn then spun in a centrifuge machine to separate the plasma. The plasma holds the growth factors that the human body uses for healing, and by spinning the blood, the doctor will have a concentrated medium of the body’s growth factor. This is then re-injected into the location of the injury. The PRP treatment followed by therapy should help Melson recover fairly quickly, though the initial post-treatment stage is rough.

“The PRP treatment is really going to help but it’s brutal at first,” said Melson. “The first 2-3 days, even the slightest movement causes extreme pain in the shoulder. This will be my third time having Dr. Andrew DeMann working on me. He works miracles and I can only hope for the same result.”

An update on Melson will follow.

In association with the 501 (C) 3 nonprofit Justadollarplease.org, Melson and his best friend Christan Zaccagnino created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community as well as the entire nation about the importance of bringing Clinical Trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, Zaccagnino, former Rutgers football player/ESPY honoree Eric LeGrand, two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, Austin “No Doubt” Trout, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Sonya Lamonakis, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr., WBO Junior Middleweight titlist/2008 US Olympian Demetrius “Boo” Andrade and fellow 08’ Olympian Shawn Estrada along with prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Jeff “TNT” Spencer, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Will “Power” Rosinsky, Floriano “Italiano” Pagliara, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

New promoter Elton Dharry looking for success in and out of the ring on August 1 at the Amazura Concert Hall in Queens, NY

QUEENS, NY (JULY 25, 2014)–Rising Bantamweight contender Elton Dharry (15-5-1, 9 KO’s) is very close to some big fights but he knows that he has to get past Antwan Robertson (9-9-1, 6 KO’s) in a scheduled 10-round bout at the Amazura Concert Hall in Queens, New York. The bout will headline The first ever Elton Dharry promoted card, this Friday night, August 1.

“Everything is going well in training, I have no complaints”, said Dharry.

Dharry knows that he will have a tough foe in front of him in Robertson. Robertson is generally durable and comes to fight and has a couple of quality wins on his resume over the likes of undefeated fighters Brandon Quintana & Brad Patraw.

“I have seen him fight. He moves some, he boxes some and he fights as well. It is nothing that I haven’t seen before. I have been boxing a long time and I will be ready for anything that he brings on August 1.”

Dharry has been one of the fastest rising boxers in the Bantamweight division as he has won 12 fights in a row. The fact that he has the right team behind him is all the difference in the world.

“Early in my career I had no one behind me. I took fights on short notice and was involved in fights that were bad decisions and because I took those fights on short notice, I did not have the proper preparation.”

Dharry has decided to take his career into his own hands and he formed his promotional company with the purpose of being able to enhance his own career and give other local fighters opportunities.

“I have to make my own opportunities and this is what I want to do. This is something that I am starting and it also gives me something I can focus on after boxing.”

With a win, there have been some title opportunities presented to Dharry but he is not looking past Robertson.

“My focus is on August 1. I know I have to win this and then I can focus on the bigger fights when the time comes.”

“This is for the fans. I hope they come out and support. They have not seen the best of me yet. I am a better and smarter fighter with each fight and I know the fans will get their monies worth on August 1.”

In a six round Super Bantamweight bout, Ryan Ramayya (1-0-2, 1 KO) of Queens, NY will battle Josh Crespo (1-1-2, 1 KO) of New Haven, CT.

Armin Mrkanovic (6-2, 3 KO’s) of Queens, NY will fight Brian Donahue (3-9-2) of Philadelphia in a 6-round Cruiser weight battle.

In four round bouts:

Mikkel Lespierre (5-0-1, 3 KO’s) of New York, NY will take on Kevin Womack (4-5-2, 2 KO’s) of Baltimore, MD in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

Jordan Rodriguez will make his pro debut against Gabriel Braxton (1-4) of Georgia in a Bantamweight fight.

Elisa Collaro of Brooklyn, NY via Italy will make her pro debut against Rachel Vidal (1-2-1) of Oklahoma City, OK in a female Super Bantamweight fight.

Livingstone Joseph will make his pro debut against Juan Santiago in a Welterweight bout.

The show will be streamed live all over the on www.gfl.tv for $14.99

Tickets for this outstanding evening of boxing are $100 for ringside and $50 for General admission and can be purchased by calling Paul at 347-924-0845 or Rodney at 347-399-4808 and will be available on www.eltondharry.com beginning Friday, July 11.

Chilemba-Cummings Scouting Report

Atlantic City, NJ: Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba (22-2-2, 9 KOs) is a prospect from South Africa with a classic boxer style. He will take on Cory “Black Ice” Cummings (17-6-1, 13 KOs), a puncher from Baltimore, MD, on August 2, 2014 as the non-domestically televised co-feature on the Kovalev-Caparello card at Revel Casino Hotel. Below is the scouting report for this light heavyweight showdown:

Cory Cummings

Category
Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba
Cory “Black Ice” Cummings
Age
27
34
Record
22-2-2 (9 KOs)
17-6-1 (13 KOs)
Strength
Chilemba’s strength is his boxing ability.
Cummings has good punching power in both hands and is a very good inside fighter.
Weakness
Isaac does not have much power.
Cory has been inactive. He only competed once in the past three years. He tends to get sloppy as the fight goes into the later rounds.
Experience
Chilemba has been in the ring with top competitors. He has been down and has come back to win.
Cummings is a veteran with over 11 years’ experience. Four of his six career defeats came against former world champions and title challengers.
Power
If Chilemba puts his punches together, the power can come.
Cory brings good power in both hands. In his last bout, he knocked down his opponent (Azea Augustama) in the first round.
Speed
Speed advantage goes to Chilemba. His boxing skills allow him to be very quick on his feet.
Cummings has average speed.
Endurance
The edge goes to Chilemba because he has fought 12 rounds eight times.
Cummings has gone 12 rounds once and 10 rounds on five different occasions.
Accuracy
Chilemba puts punches together with lots of combinations and will mix it up.
Cory is more of a puncher than a boxer. If he can keep the fight at a close distance, then he will have the advantage here.
Defense
Chilemba has better defense than Cummings.
Cummings is more of an offensive-minded fighter.
Chin
Chilemba was down against Maxim Vlasov and came back to win the fight.
Cummings has a solid chin. He has never been stopped.
Style
Chilemba is a boxer.
Cummings is more of a brawler.
The Match-Up
Will Chilemba be able to take Cummings’ power?
Will Cummings be able to deal with Chilemba’s boxing skills?
Will Chilemba be looking past Cummings?
Will Cummings capitalize on Chilemba looking past him and use his power to his advantage?
This is the boxer versus the puncher. The fight will come down to whether the puncher takes away the boxer’s style or the boxer takes away the puncher’s style. Also, appearing on a Kovalev undercard means they will both have an opportunity to showcase their talents under a spotlight. Look for both of them to try to make a statement and showcase what they can do.

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “We signed Isaac Chilemba with a plan in mind for him in the light heavyweight division. Seeing how he does against a brawler like Cory Cummings is the next step. I’m sure Cummings will try to upset our plans, so the fans in attendance at Revel on Saturday are in for another great light heavyweight fight.”

Amateur star Stefan Haertel makes professional debut on August 16

German amateur star Stefan Haertel will make his professional debut on August 16. The 26 year-old, who signed a long-term contract with Team Sauerland in May, will face Oleg Fedotovs (18-14, 12 KOs) at the Erfurt Exhibition Hall in Thuringia, Germany.

‘’After many successful years as an amateur I am looking forward to this new challenge,’’ said the Berlin-based Haertel. ‘’It has been six months since my last competitive fight and I can’t wait to get back into the ring, shake of the rust and show everyone what I am capable of.’’

Haertel, who is training with renowned German coach Karsten Roewer, will be campaigning at Super Middleweight, joining Sauerland stable mates Arthur Abraham, Mikkel Kessler and George Groves in the hotly contested division.

‘’Super Middleweight is currently one of the most exciting divisions in the world,’’ said Sauerland Event CEO Chris Meyer. ‘’We believe Stefan has the ability to go right the way to the top. That is why we are matching him with such an experienced opponent in his first professional fight.’’

Fedotovs certainly has experience on his side. The Latvian has completed 32 fights in a career spanning almost 10 years. Despite his opponents superior experience Haertel remains unperturbed and ready for whatever challenges come his way.

‘’When I step into the ring I come to win, no matter who is put in front of me,’’ said the debutant. ‘’My goal is to become world champion and to do that I must beat everyone starting with Fedotovs.’’

Haertel transition into the paid ranks has been helped by the presence of old friends Enrico Koelling (WBA Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Champion) and Tyron Zeuge (WBO Youth Super Middleweight Champion), who alongside WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Juergen Braehmer train together under the guidance of Karsten Roewer.

‘’I got a very warm welcome from my friends Enrico Koelling and Tyron Zeuge,’’ said Haertel. ‘’I know them well from the amateurs and they have made it easy for me to integrate into the training sessions with Karsten Roewer.’’ Haertel will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his training partners, starting with victory at the Erfurt Exhibition Hall.

In the evening’s main event IBF World Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez defends his title against former World Champion Firat Arslan. Tickets are available via eventim.de.

GGG: Golovkin Gores Geale / Good Going Guys

By Bart Barry-
Gennady Golovkin
“Geale had the best credentials of anyone that’s gotten in the ring with him. Geale is a former two-time titlist.” – Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, July 26.

Saturday at Madison Square Garden, 32-year-old Kazakhstani middleweight titlist Gennady “GGG” Golovkin stopped Australian challenger Daniel Geale at 2:47 of round 3. It was another attraction-building event televised by HBO, a portentous sort of happening intended to entice viewers with the chance one of Golovkin’s next three or four matches might come against enticing, or at least appropriate, competition – even if a $60 pay-per-view tariff must be levied upon subscribers to see it.

Daniel Geale fought like a self-taught hobbyist, Saturday, a man who wanted out of his contract during introductions and was unheard of in the United States for good reason until last week, when aficionados who know better began exercising their minds with the calisthenics of thought-experiment, proving they possessed dexterity enough to imagine a means by which Geale might vanquish Golovkin. Geale was, after all, the guy some Americans watched via buggy videostream in 2012 decision Felix Sturm, a middleweight titlist still better known by Americans for being wronged during a De La Hoya-Hopkins infomercial 10 years ago than anything he achieved afterwards.

There is some simple calculus in matchmaking, to complement its much more difficult intuiting, and that is: Volume punchers solve boxers who solve power punchers who solve volume punchers. That’s an indirect way of saying a volume-punching guy like Geale – who unloaded his best righthand on an onrushing Golovkin in round 3, and landed it flush, and didn’t so much as compromise the trajectory of Golovkin’s own righthand, an already started one stiff enough to land Geale on a blue mat from which the Aussie rose with seven beats to go in a 10-count he then stretched to a standing 4-count before quitting on his feet with a spiritless shake of the head – was a better showcase for Golovkin than even cynics anticipated.

Here’s a direct way of putting it: Daniel Geale hadn’t a prayer against Gennady Golovkin. Much of that is Golovkin’s fantastic professionalism, a professionalism supporter and dissenter alike would dearly like to see tested by a worthy adversary, more overdue for Golovkin now than any HBO fighter since Andre Berto, but a goodish amount of it is also due to matchmaking and Geale-promoter Gary Shaw’s noteworthy penchant for getting no-hopers on HBO.

If there was a first noteworthy moment in Saturday’s main event, it came in the final seconds of round 1, when Golovkin measured Geale with straight rights. What made it noteworthy was Golovkin’s fearlessness across from Geale, a fearlessness that allowed Golovkin to paw and tap with a right glove extended fully from his chin even while he remained in an orthodox stance. Youngsters are taught to time and punish opponents who hang their jabs, returning their lead heads at half the rate they deploy them, but how often does a prizefighter in a title match have the chutzpah to hang a cross, and leave it there?

That it took fewer than 170 seconds for Golovkin to realize Geale’s freshest haymaker mightn’t imperil him speaks to matchmaking, finally, more than another element. Once the man across from you is incapable of hurting you, he becomes a target, not an opponent, and while reducing challengers to such marks a champion’s greatness, having opponents ready-reduced in round 1 is a mark of attraction-building more than matchmaking.

Talk now turns to a Madison Square Garden superfight between career welterweight and new middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Golovkin, which, conducted at a catchweight between 155 and 155 1/4 pounds, would be compelling. Such a fight, though, loses its attraction by 30 percent with every pound that happens above 155 – still, technically, middleweight – since the men’s styles are similar enough to reduce their competition to one of size, and Golovkin would be considerably larger. Cotto, of course, graduated beyond the Daniel Geales of the world almost 10 years ago, when he stopped Randall Bailey (26-2, 24 KOs) in 2004, and Cotto is only 18 months older than Golovkin – which ought to help statisticians recalibrate the meaningfulness of Golovkin’s 90-percent knockout ratio.

If the best match for Golovkin is at junior middleweight with the middleweight champion of the world, or at middleweight with a man enjoying a career rebirth round 154 pounds, so be it, but can we please cool the silly banter about GGG’s willingness to fight great men at 168? Golovkin has fought exactly two times above middleweight, when he defeated Amar Amari and Malik Dziarra in 2008, and to say his Saturday untethering of Daniel Geale qualifies him for a match with Carl Froch or Andre Ward at super middleweight is, frankly, inappropriate.

The same night in 2009 Ward unmanned Mikkel Kessler, a favorite to win the Super Six tournament, Golovkin laid waste to Mikhail Makarov in Makarov’s 11th prizefight. Two weeks before Froch gave Lucian Bute his first career loss, in 2012, Golovkin stamped Makoto Fuchigami’s record with its seventh. The question, then, is not if Ward and Froch would each be 30-0 against the 30 men Golovkin has faced but instead: Would either Ward or Froch have less than a 100-percent knockout ratio?

A hundred victories over Daniel Geale do not approach one victory over Andre Ward, and a thrashing of little Miguel Cotto, asked by many to retire 4 1/2 years ago when Manny Pacquiao whupped him, does not approach so much as a decision victory over Carl Froch. It’s long past time for Golovkin’s handlers to do something bold.

Jose Benavidez Jr., Oscar Valdez win in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Jose Benavidez Jr. didn’t waste time. He had something to say. A message, he said.

Consider it delivered.

A first-round stoppage over Henry Auraad proved to be an explosive statement of what Benavidez hopes to do as soon as possible in a career that began with a bang, yet had been put on hold by hand problems

There were no signs that the hands will give him any more trouble. There was no caution and perhaps not a whole lot of patience in Benavidez, who threw punches at a rate and with intensity that showed no sign of brittle hands. The only one in danger of sustaining a fracture on Saturday night was Auraad.

Auraad, an unknown Colombian, never had a chance. He was just a guy standing in the way of a prospect with something to prove.

Benavidez (21-0, 15 KOs) pounced on the opportunity, overwhelming Auraad (16-9-1, 13 KOs), first with a jab that stunned the Colombian like a lightning bolt. Auraad stumbled forward. As he did, he ran straight into right hand from Benavidez. Somehow, Auraad kept his balance and stayed off the canvas. But not for long.

Benavidez immediately attacked. An avalanche of Benavidez punches buried Auraad beneath. He got up and stumbled forward. At 1:50 of the first, it was over. It was Benavidez in a TKO that said he wants world-class challenges.

Benavidez already has been mentioned as a possibility for some of the sport’s bigger names. He was on the short list for a bout with Brandon Rios, according to Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler. But HBO said no to that one.

“That’s because I’ve never been scheduled for even 10 rounds,’’ Benavidez said after only his second first in his hometown. “But 10 rounds, that’s what I want. Big names are what I want. Fighting a Rios is what I need.

“Hey, it’s time, time for me to step up.’’

A swift stoppage makes it hard to make a definitive judgment on whether Benavidez is ready for the next step. His trainer and dad, Jose Benavidez Sr., had hoped for more work with a few more rounds.

“Five or six maybe,’’ Benavidez Sr. said.

But the son had a different idea all along.

“I just wanted to knock him out,’’ Benavidez said. “What do they say: They don’t pay for overtime.’’

But there would be some extra pay in a bout against a Rios.

In the co-main event, Top Rank prospect Oscar Valdez (13-0, 11 KOs), a two-time Mexican Olympian, scored a unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz (23-15, 7 KOs) that was as one-sided as it was bruising. Ruiz rushed at Valdez, a featherweight who went to grade school in Tucson. He clinched. He was penalized a point and probably could have been penalized a few more, Ruiz did it all, while also taking one big shot after another.

“A tough guy,’’ Valdez said. “But you learn from tough fights, especially from a guy like him.’’

From Valdez manager Frank Espinoza’s perspective, the young Mexican featherweight’s learning curve is ahead of any featherweight he has ever managed. Espinoaza has managed some of the best, including Abner Mares.

“He has a real chance to be great,’’ Espionza said.

Before the Solo Boxeo telecast, Trevor McCumby (16-0, 12 KOs), a Chicago light-heavyweight, fought a no-name Michael Gbenga, whose name wasn’t even on his trunks. No name, no chance either. McCumby landed left after left, winning every round on the cards and knocking down Gbenga (15-16, 15 KOs), of Baltimore, in the fifth round of six.

Best of the undercard:
· With Oscar De La Hoya’s first pro trainer, Robert Alcazar, in his corner, bantamweight Francisco De Vaca of Phoenix stayed unbeaten (7-0, 3 KOs), soring unanimous decision over Ernesto Guerrero (15-12, 10 KOs) of Mexico.

· Featherweight Keenan Carbajal (4-1-1, 3 KOs) threw a left hand that reminded many in the capacity crowd of another Carbajal, Michael, a Hall of Famer best known his left. It took 26 second for Keenan to throw a Carbajal-like left for a first-round knockout of Edgar Pinedo (1-1) of Mexico.

Benavidez stops Auraad in one

Jose Benavidez Jr. remained perfect by stopping Henry Auraad in the 1st round of their scheduled 8-round Welterweight bout at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona.

Benavidez scored a knockdown with a right hand. Auraad was hurt and a big flurry dropped him for a second time. Auraad got to his feet but was stumbling and the referee stopped the bout at 1:50 of round two.

Benavidez Jr., 145 3/4 lbs of Phoenix is now 21-0 with 15 knockouts. Auraad, 146 lbs of Miami, FL is now 16-9-1.

Oscar Valdez remained undefeated by scoring a 8-round unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz in a Featherweight bout.

Ruiz was deducted a point for excessive holding and Valdez won by scores of 80-71 on all cards.

Valdez, 125 1/2 lbs of Nogales, MX is now 12-0. Ruiz, 125 1/2 lbs of Newhall, CA is now 23-15.

Emmnauel Nieves made a successful pro debut with a 4-round unanimous decision over Alex Holguin in a Super Featherweight bout.

Nieves won by scores of 39-37 on all cards. Holguin of Albuquerque, NM is now 1-1.
