“World Boxing Cares” – WBC Silver Champion Raja Amasheh visits children hospital in Saarbrücken (Germany)

WBC Silver flyweight champion Raja Amasheh has proven big heart inside the ring numerous times. This Friday the 31-year-old also showed big heart for kids when she became one of the “Big Champions Supporting Small Champions” by visiting the children hospital in Saarbrücken (Germany) under the banner of “WBC World Boxing Cares”.

“It is important to show the kids that we care about them”, said Amasheh. “We have to be in the corner of those in need – especially the small ones who cannot help themselves. The team at the children hospital in Saarbrücken is doing a great job and I hope that we could help and support them a little bit by entertaining the kids and having a good time with them.”

Raja Amasheh immediately fell in love with four-year-old Rebecca who is suffering from bladder and kidney disease. “Rebecca reminded me of myself when I was a kid”, said Amasheh. “I told her that she is a fighter and will beat her disease. Health is the most important thing in life – especially when you have your whole life to live. I know that Rebecca will get through this difficult time. She’s a true champion!”

Rebecca and the other small patients enjoyed the visit and thankfully received some t-shirts, mini gloves and autographs from the world champion. Amasheh’s promoter Oliver Heib (DOG Event) had initiated the visit because he has been working closely with the hospital for years. With his construction company he helped renovating the building over the last ten years.

“Children are our future so we are happy to help them wherever we can”, says Heib. “Of course, we support the hospital and their team as well as the initiative ‘WBC Cares’. We are very fortunate to be in a position where we can give something back to the community.”

Jr. Middleweight Glen Tapia was denied a license just 24 hours before his bout against Salim Larbi on the Gennady Golovkin – Daniel Geale card in New York according to Dan Rafael espn.com.

The NYSAC said only that he was denied a license for medical reasons. However, Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, which promotes Tapia, said the denial was because of an issue New York commission physician Dr. Barry Jordan had with Tapia’s blood work.

“The medical team in New York did not approve his blood work, which had nothing to do with HIV or hepatitis,” Moretti said told ESPN.com. “The same blood work was approved in New Jersey for his last fight a month ago. While we respect the decision we would like some further clarification in the days and weeks ahead so we can plan his next fight accordingly.”

The televised quadruple header was promoted by GH3 Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions and sponsored by Modell’s Sporting Goods.

In round two, Douglas started to work the body of Soro with a combination against the ropes. In round three, Douglas was very effective working the body with both hands and then came up with a right uppercut. In round six, Soro got in his best offense as he landed a three punch combination that was capped by a hard uppercut. Douglas shook it off nicely and came back to land a nice body combination of his own. In round seven, Douglas blasted Soro with a pair of right hands.

In round eight the door opened for Soro as he landed a flush right hand that wobbled Douglas to the ropes. Soro jumped on the opportunity and landed a follow up flurry and it looked like Douglas may go to the canvas but he gathered himself by throwing punches and then holding to get out of the potentially disastrous round.

Soro said, “In the first few roumd, I was stressed because I was fighting outside of home.”

“Around the 4th or 5th round, I started to relax. I know in the later rounds that experience was the difference. When I had him hurt in round eight, i just had to be more precise and had to accelerate my output a little more. This is not my best weight and I know I can do better.”

Luis, 135 lbs of Cornwall, ONT, CAN is now 18-2. Ellison, 133 lbs of Newark, NJ is now 11-1-1.

Grown-up message: Benavidez hopes to deliver one

By Norm Frauenheim
JoseBenavidez300
PHOENIX –- He was a 16-year-old prodigy. Then, he was a 17-year-old prospect with a contract before he had a high-school diploma. Now, Jose Benavidez Jr. is 22 with something to prove.

“I want everyone to know that I’m ready for tougher fights,’’ Benavidez said. “It’s time for me to step it up a notch.’’

Benavidez (20-0, 14 KOs) hopes to deliver that message Saturday night against Colombian Henry Aurad (16-8-1, 13 KOs) in only his second hometown appearance at Celebrity Theater in Phoenix on a UniMas-televised card that includes two-time Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez (11-0, 11 KOs), a Top Rank prospect and featherweight from the border-town of Nogales with roots in Tucson.

Boxing’s rite of passage is a well-worn path, but there’s no sure way to travel through it. Most don’t. Some get lost along the way. Some get exposed. Some are forgotten. It all starts with the hyperbole attached to any news conference that promises a phenomenon.

For Benavidez, that meant comparisons to the biggest star in today’s game. He was called the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. By now, history is littered with futile examples of the next Michael Jordan. Pity the next LeBron James. For media familiar with the hype, it’s an easy headline. But for an impressionable 17-year-old introduced as an heir-apparent, it’s seductive stuff. Misleading, too.

The fine print always includes adversity, which for Benavidez began with injuries to his right wrist and hand. Pain in a ligament and a bone spur turned him into a one-handed fighter, which Benavidez overcame with his eye-catching jab. It allowed to him to survive in October, 2012 for a decision over Pavel Miranda, who in the eighth and final round landed a left hand that nearly knocked out Benavidez.

There was surgery and rehab. There also was sudden inactivity in an internet-ruled business that quickly moves onto the next heir-apparent. Benavidez had not been forgotten. Not exactly. But the YouTube fascination with him had faded. His dad and trainer, Jose Benavidez Sr., worried.

“It was just little things,’’ his dad said. “Sometimes, he was a little late to the gym. That never happened when he was younger. I didn’t know whether he was frustrated, or his body just needed some rest, or what was going on. I just decided not to push him, to let him go his own way for a while’’

His son said there was never any thought about leaving the sport.

“No, boxing has always been there for me,’’ said Benavidez, who was always at ringside for Phoenix bouts staged by Iron Boy Promotions, a Top Rank partner for a card scheduled to begin Saturday at 6 p.m. (PST). “I always knew that.’’

Not fighting, Benavidez said, helped him re-evaluate his commitment to a sport he has been around, in one way or another, since grade school. As a kid, there was no choice. As a grown-up, there is. Watching others fight, he said, made him realize how much he missed it and how much he still wanted to prove.

“Physically, I feel a lot stronger at 22 than I did when I was 17,’’ said Benavidez, who started at junior-welterweight and will fight at welterweight Saturday. “As a person, I’ve just grown up.’’

He says he’s had no problems with his hand in training or in three straight victories since he got rocked by Miranda, an unknown junior welterweight on the undercard of Brandon Rios’ victory over Mike Alvarado in their first fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

“It’s just time for me to get back to work and prove I’m ready for the next level,’’ said Benavidez, a kid-no-more. “In my hometown, this is the fight to do just that.’’

Meanwhile, it’s no coincidence that Valdez is sharing a card with Benavidez, who five years ago was seen as a fighter who could re-awaken an Arizona market dormant since Phoenix Hall of Famer Michael Carbajal’s heyday during the 1990s. Valdez, who is scheduled to face Juan Ruiz (23-13, 7 KOs) was a well-known Mexican amateur who fought often in Arizona. Valdez, who is bi-lingual, re-calls going to grade school in Tucson.

“At this point, he’s very good, a terrific prospect,” Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler told reporters after Valdez stopped Adian Perez on the undercard of Manny Pacquaio’s rematch victory over Timothy Bradley last April at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand “We have a credo: Ability and marketability. We think he has both. When a guy can fight, brings an audience from Mexico, Arizona and California, that’s a big fan base.’’

“They are say they want to fight him, they all say they want to fight him, different story about getting in the ring with him.”

“We started four years ago, I told him he would be the best 160 in the world
and the most avoided. He listened to me and doesn’t question me. He does his job and I do mine.”

“He’s never said no to me about anything in regards to his training.”

“There’s so much more in the gym than what we’ve seen.”

GRAHAM SHAW (Daniel Geale)
“Daniel’s come to win a belt, not just be another name on Gennady’s list.”

‘There’s a risk in every fight, Daniel is willing to fight 12 hard rounds.”

“Daniel must engage Gennady to win.”

“We’re ready for anything, we need to win the first two rounds and start fast.”

“Gennady’s a big puncher, but Daniel typically doesn’t get hit too often.”

“He’s tougher than people think.”

FRED JENKINS (Bryant Jennings)
“Anytime he’s been put to the challenge, he always succeeds, the harder the challenge the harder the fight. “

“If Perez presses the fight, Bryant will be there to meet him. He will control the pace with his skills.”

“Perez is fast and accurate, we expect the best of Perez.”

“We’ve had excellent sparring, I’ve had to hold Bryant off until fight time.”

“Fighters like Bryant only comes along once every 50 years.”

“Bryant loves the publicity, it’s a dream that he has been waiting on.”

ADAM BOOTH (Mike Perez)
“We started 16 weeks ago, but took off four weeks for his (shoulder) injury to heal.”

“He’s the most skilled heavyweight I’ve trained.”

“If he can fulfill his potential, Mike will be a very special heavyweight.”

“His manager Patrick Thomas contacted me, we had a trial for five days.”

‘It’s possible for a Mike Tyson and Pernall Whitaker combination for him to
fulfill with his skill set.”

“Jennings is tough and strong but Mike has that and much more
elements to beat him.”

MIKE “YES INDEED” REED SIGNS WITH TOP RANK

WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S.A. – Twenty-one year old light welterweight professional boxer, Mike “Yes Indeed” Reed, has signed a promotional agreement with Las Vegas-based, boxing promoter, Top Rank. Born in Washington, D.C., Reed trains in Clinton, Maryland, at Dream Team Boxing Gym, which is owned and operated by his father, trainer, and manager, Michael “Buck” Pinson.

Mike Reed understands the significance of his signing. Reed stated, “I am delighted to sign with Top Rank. They’ve been successful for a long time, and have promoted the biggest names in boxing, from Muhammad Ali to Manny Pacquiao. I am excited to have the same opportunities as the legends that came before me. Top Rank clearly has an understanding of how to market their fighters and they know how to build pay-per-view superstars. Team Reed is looking forward to having a long, successful relationship with one of the most prestigious promotional companies in boxing.”
Reed continued, “This is a huge opportunity for me, and I will continue to work hard. I have the right people on my team and now add the security of a powerful, promotional company to help me reach my goal of winning multiple world titles. I’m grateful to everyone that has played a part in helping me reach this level, but I’m just getting started. I’m looking forward to representing the elite class of fighters from the DMV and the Beltway region.”
Coach Pinson discussed Team Reed’s reasons for joining Top Rank. “We wanted to join a company that does a great job of moving their fighters, and Top Rank is known for getting their fighters world championship opportunities. Many of their current fighters are world champions. We recently fought on one of their shows. They treated us well and were very professional.”
Pinson added, “Before my son’s pro career even began, our team set a goal that within our first ten fights, we wanted to make a statement. During those ten fights, Michael fought some tough competition, and proved that he is a fan-friendly fighter, with extremely fast hands and power. Team Reed is very goal-oriented, and we are focused. We will be staying busy in the years to come, so make sure to look out for Team Reed.”
Reed had a stellar amateur career, compiling an impressive record of 90-13. Reed was matched competitively during his first ten professional fights, has looked impressive, and remains undefeated. In his most recent fight on June 14, 2014, held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Reed won a unanimous decision over Alberto Morales.
