POUND-FOR-POUND STAR RIGONDEAUX BLASTS SANTA CRUZ AND MARTINEZ FOR REFUSING WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION AS HE BATTLES KOKIETGYM LIVE ON BOXNATION

Guillermo Rigondeaux
LONDON (July 18) – Super-bantamweight kingpin Guillermo Rigondeaux has blasted the other recognised champions in the division for refusing to fight him.

The reigning WBA Super and WBO world champion is set to battle the cultured Sod Kokietgym in Macao this Saturday, live on BoxNation, but has taken the opportunity on the eve of the fight to take a pop at the other leading names in the 122-pound weight class.

The 33-year-old is not happy with current WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz and IBF hotshot Kiko Martinez for turning down the opportunity of a unification clash to determine the undisputed number one in the division.

“I am frustrated that the two other champions in my division – Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez – will not step up to fight me in title unifications to determine the true world champion. I do not understand that mindset,” said Rigondeaux.

“How do you not want to prove you are the best? I do. Nonito Donaire did when we fought in our title unification battle in New York last year. The fans deserve better from Santa Cruz and Martinez. The media should be holding them accountable.

“A real champion fights and accepts the challenges from the best in his division. Back in the day, world champions accepted the top challenges.

“I get criticised by the media for my style of fighting. Maybe the media should be criticising the champions who deny the fights boxing fans crave?,” bemoaned Rigondeaux.

Martinez is set to face Irish sensation Carl Frampton next up, another fight live and exclusive on BoxNation, with Santa Cruz pencilled in to fight on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s rematch with Marcos Maidana.

Rigondeaux, however, has to come through a tough test of his own before he can look to unify the belts when he takes on Kokietgym, a two-time world title challenger who is on a nine-year, 37-fight unbeaten streak.

The Cuban, regarded as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters, has refused to overlook the dangerous Thai and has been hard at work in the gym preparing for this weekend.

“I had a 10-week training camp with George Rubio where we focused on honing my combinations and power punching. I am taking nothing for granted with Kokietgym. He has an impressive record and he is a smart fighter,” said Rigondeaux.

“Hard training and discipline are my greatest assets as a fighter. I am dedicated to being the best boxer in the world and perfecting my technique. I am always the last man out of the gym in training camp. I never weigh more than 129 pounds between fights,” he said.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist, with an unmatched amateur background, has promised to push the action more in this fight after claims that his style wasn’t the most fan-friendly.

“I plan to be more aggressive to be more impressive,” said Rigondeaux. “But let me make this clear, I have been a world champion and an Olympic gold medalist for one reason – I do not make mistakes in the ring. I fight my fight, not my opponents’ fights. In baseball, great hitters do not swing at bad pitches,” he said.

With his defence amongst the very best, Rigondeaux believes he can dominate for many years to come.

“I feel great and I think I can keep fighting at this elite level for many more years because I have never taken any punishment in the ring,”

Rigondeaux said. Rigondeaux vs. Kokietgym is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday at 2pm. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

GOLOVKIN — GEALE MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Gennady Golovkin
TOM LOEFFLER: We are definitely excited about this event. I would like to thank some of the partners that we have for this event. Gary Shaw was very instrumental as Daniel Geale’s promoter for which we have a great-co-feature for this card at Madison Square Garden, the World’s Most Famous Arena, the Mecca of Boxing. We are very excited to be going into the big room for this fight. Without HBO and their financial support, we wouldn’t be able to put an event like this together. This is clearly the biggest test, the biggest name and the most experienced person that has been willing to get in the ring with Gennady, so far in his career. Geale is a two-time world champion – he won two world championship titles over in Germany, which is not the easiest thing to do. He beat two great fighters in Sturm and Stieglitz and the credentials he brings to the ring are impressive. We want to thank Gary and Team Geale for accepting the challenge. Gennady has been labeled as the fastest rising star in boxing and brings excitement every time he gets into the ring.

GARY SHAW: I would like to thank Tom and K2 who have been wonderful partners. As everyone know we had a cancelled fight in May due to an injury to Mike Perez, but everything has been rescheduled at the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden and it doesn’t get any bigger than that. I also want to thank HBO on behalf of Team Geale. Graham Shaw, Geale’s trainer is a man of few words and has been with Daniel for about 5 years and has two world title wins in Germany. He’s a great trainer but a lot of people in the United States don’t know him because most of his work is in Australia but I can tell you he is up there with the best of them. As far as Abel Sanchez, I know him personally and have the world of respect for him. He’s a great trainer, does a great job in Big Bear, and Gennady is lucky to have him. As far as Gennady goes, we respect him and his power – he is a great champion and a great person out of the ring, as is Daniel Geale and that’s what makes this fight so great. We have two great fighters willing to fight one another. Daniel Geale has always told me he has wanted to fight Gennady, we never ducked Gennady, but due to the pay-per-view in Australia we were unable to schedule until now. Now the fight is on and it’s a wonderful double-header with Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez as the opening fight and rarely do you get an opening fight with two heavyweights who are undefeated and a final eliminator for the WBC to fight the winner of Stiverne and Wilder. Daniel Geale has wanted this fight, he is very confident in his own abilities and his ability to win this fight.

DANIEL GEALE: Thanks Gary, that was nice. I would like to say that I am really excited to be fighting on such a big show at Madison Square Garden. It is going to be a perfect step for me, fighting a guy like Gennady, who is one of the hottest names in boxing today. I’ve been saying for years in Australia – I will fight the best fighters and this is the only way to do it. To do it like this, in Madison Square Garden, with my team and Gary Shaw, I couldn’t be happier.

TOM LOEFFLER: I would like to touch on the co-feature we have, the eliminator for the WBC heavyweight title, really could stand on it’s own as a main event. That’s why we are excited about this being a great HBO double-header. Bryant Jennings is from Philadelphia, is very marketable and will bring a lot of fans with him. This will be Perez’ third time on HBO and he is also undefeated. It’s only a main event like this that we can make that fight a co-feature.

ABEL SANCHEZ: We are extremely happy that we are in the last week of training. Gennady can’t wait to get in the ring. I’m sure Danny will be well prepared working with Graham – I think he’s a great coach. This will be the first time that Gennady has had so much time off between fights but he is chomping to get in the ring. We are looking forward to going to Madison Square Garden and putting on a great show.

TOM LOEFFLER: Now I would like to introduce the WBA & IBO Middleweight Champion. He has the highest knockout ratio of any world champion today. This will be his third time at Madison Square Garden and his 5th time appearing on HBO, and we are excited to bring Gennady back to the USA for his fans.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Thanks Tom, It is very important for me. I respect Daniel Geale very much. I have been watching his fights and I know it is not going to be an easy fight. This is going to be a great show. The heavyweights – that is a great fight. I am looking forward to coming back to Madison Square Garden on July 26.

What is it that you see in Gennady Golovkin, who is 29-0 with 26 KOs, that makes you want to fight him so bad?

DANIEL GEALE: To be honest, Gennady has got titles and I want titles. That’s my main goal here. I want to fight the best fighters and I want to win some titles and there is only one way to do that, whether he has a great record or not. You have to get in there and test yourself against the best fighters in the world.

What fights have you watched and what makes you think this is not going to be an easy fight?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Daniel is a great fighter. I have watched his tapes, and the last fight in particular, makes me realize this is not going to be an easy fight.

You fought Gennady in the amateurs?

DANIEL GEALE: Yes, the fight was in 2001. I don’t remember a lot about the fight but I kind of believe I got put down in that fight, but that was a long time ago and now we both believe we are better fighters these days and that’s why it’s going to be a good fight now.

The other two middleweight champions have boxed with Daniel and have predicted he will beat Gennady if he sticks to the right fight plan. What is the right fight plan?

GRAHAM SHAW: Well, without giving too much away, if Daniel fights his absolute best, and that is how he’s looked in the gym – the best he has ever looked. If he fights his best, he beats Gennady’s best. But we’ll see on the night.

You have said you rank Gennady behind Sugar Ray Robinson and Bernard Hopkins as far as middleweights go. What kind of a statement do you think Gennady needs to make in this fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Ranking him behind the two people that you just mentioned, we hope to get the kind of fights that would showcase him to prove that statement that I made. He definitely needs to fight Daniel in the same manner as some of the past opponents. But Danny possesses the ability to go 12 rounds and I think that is going to be the big issue – to see if he can control a man and dominate a man that is used to going 12 rounds. For Daniel to go to Germany to win those two world titles says a lot about Daniel and we’ve got a fight on our hands to propel him to that level that I told you about.

What glimpses of greatness did you see in the Curtis Stevens fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: What I saw in the Curtis Stevens fight was somewhat of a Hagler composure. Curtis upset him because of some of the antics he was doing on social media and Gennady was able to keep his composure and be patient and punish Curtis because of some of the things he had been saying. All of those pluses that he has in comparing him to Hagler and Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson, they will all be seen in time as he fights great fighters like he is fighting on the 26th.

What fights do you see for Gennady assuming he gets past this fight?

TOM LOEFFLER: It’s my job as Gennady’s promoter to look forward and to plan ahead. No one on our team is underestimating what Daniel Geale brings to the table. He is clearly Gennady’s biggest challenge to date. That being said, if everything goes the right way on July 26 for Gennady, it is still my job to strategize ahead of time. Certainly with Cotto and his big win against Sergio Martinez to win the WBC title, certainly moves him to the top of our list. There were talks about a Chavez fight before and that didn’t come to fruition. Gennady is up for fighting anybody – any of the big names. If it is a compelling fight or if it is a PPV, Gennady would move up or down. If he beats Daniel on the 26th, then the priority would be to unify the middleweight titles, but no one is underestimating Daniel by any stretch of the imagination.

GARY SHAW: I wouldn’t look past July 26 if I were you.

What qualities will Gennady bring out of you?

DANIEL GEALE: To be honest, Gennady is the type of guy, he’s got a powerful punch and everyone knows about his skills to back that up. You can’t be one-dimensional in any way because he will find a hole. To me, that is good because I have to improve and I have to step up and fight at my best. Normally when I do fight great fighters, I step up and fight better as well. In this case I am going to make that happen.

Where does Gennady feel that he gets his power from?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: It comes from hard work every day on my speed and my timing coming all-together for the power. The timing is very important. I am not a body builder – it is natural power, it’s original.

Do you feel the big fights you have been in will help you?

DANIEL GEALE: Yes it definitely, I have been in big fights before. On big occasions and have had a big crowd against me in those situations as well. Those experiences will serve me well in this fight. Being the underdog as well is something that I am used to.

Do you believe Daniel Geale poses your most difficult fight to date?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Yes absolutely because he has a specific style. He has proved that in his fights and it will be difficult to solve.

You lost two close fights in the US – do you feel a need to win more convincingly to get the decision to go in your favor?

DANIEL GEALE: It’s always tricky in close fights. You want to be as convincing as possible for decisions to go your way and sometimes they don’t. That makes you who you are. Those close losses, although they were disappointing, they did push me on to train harder and want to achieve more. I didn’t feel as if I was beaten in either of those two fights, so it just motivated me to train harder. There is always going to be bad decisions in boxing – you can’t let that affect you in any way. You just have to go out and do your job to the best of your ability.

What about your style will give Gennady trouble?

DANIEL GEALE: I would like to say that my defense is usually pretty good so I am going to be making the most of that – not giving him an easy target to aim at.

Has Gennady’s training evolved over the years?

ABEL SANCHEZ: His style and his progression has evolved, as I outlined to him when we started working together. I asked him for some time and dedication and discipline and I promised him I would make him into what he is today.

Does he still have the hunger since he has trouble getting big fights?

ABEL SANCHEZ: As far as his dedication and wanting to fight…I think the fact that when he goes home, and when he does, he forgets about boxing when he’s with his family. Then when there is a fight scheduled eight or nine weeks out he comes up to Big Bear and completely submerges himself in the training in preparation for a fight that is going to keep him hungry. As long as he separates those two I think he is going to be tough to deal with because he is going to be so committed to what he is doing that the skills and the power and a tough fight like Daniel will be fresh for him.

Daniel, last time you were on American TV, you dropped Barker but lost the decision. How do you recover from that?

DANIEL GEALE: Firstly, the Barker fight was frustrating – knocking him down in the 6th and not getting the decision, but you have to take it on the chin and come back from that. I didn’t dwell on it too long. I got back in the gym and now I am on a huge show again fighting for a world title. I am coming over to the US trying to turn it around to get on the winning side of things. This next fight with Gennady is at a huge venue, Madison Square Garden and it is for titles, couldn’t be any more than I want.

How are ticket sales and what do you consider a success for this fight?

TOM LOEFFLER: Tickets are tracking very well. The Garden is happy with the sales. It has gotten a great response ever since we announced it. Having a fight like this with Gennady defending the titles and Daniel, who has been on HBO before and brings credibility and the co-feature gives this event a life of it’s own. Right now it is scaled to the lower bowl, so including the suites it is about 11,000 total, which is a big jump up from Gennady’s last time at the Theater against Curtis Stevens and we are expecting a great turnout.

Do you feel any added pressure fighting in the big room?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: I’m so happy to be back at Madison Square Garden and to be in the big arena this time. I am excited about the fight as well as fighting Daniel and the whole thing is just amazing.

TOM LOEFFLER: I might add that this may be the first time that a headliner for a Garden boxing event will also appear in a Broadway play in the same week – Gennady will be appearing at Rocky.

Do you feel if the fight goes long you will have an advantage?

DANIEL GEALE: Gennady’s fitness…I’m sure he is training very hard for this fight. If it does go the distance or even to the later rounds, we are not thinking it is going to be much easier in that respect. I am going out there expecting the best fighter that he can be and I am just going to go out there and do my thing. I have been the distance with plenty of great fighters in world title fights so I have that experience. If it’s an advantage I am definitely going to make the most of it but we are expecting Golovkin to be strong later in the fight.

ABEL SANCHEZ: Every fight that we have fought for titles could have gone the distance. We prepare for 12 in every fight. Our game plan has to be a little modified so as to not let Daniel get comfortable in the early rounds because Daniel is a volume puncher. Of course we are aware of the fact that Daniel is used to going 12-rounds and is used to throwing a lot of punches in every round. We know his conditioning is going to be great.

How do you feel about opponents avoiding you?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: I don’t think much about this, but I heard my team was planning this upcoming fight and I knew it was difficult to get fighters, but that is basically all I heard and I don’t think much about it.

How has sparring with George Groves gone with Gennady?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Sparring went very well with George. George is a high-caliber fighter. He gave us some great work but he was just one of five sparring partners we had in this camp. George fought three or four days with Gennady and four rounds each day so he helped us and we appreciated it very much.

How do you mentally prepare for a boxer such as Gennady who has so much power?

DANIEL GEALE: That’s a good question. Mentally I have been preparing for the toughest fight of my life. It’s going to be a tough fight against a very tough fighter. I put in a very difficult training camp. I feel since the Macklin fight fell through – things were looking great then, and now they have stepped up again. I have been confident throughout and I have been wanting to fight Gennady for a while. I believe that things happen for a reason and we are very excited about that.

In closing…

TOM LOEFFLER: Not only will this fight be broadcast on HBO but it will be televised live in over 100 countries. I know it is on PPV in Australia for Danny so it brings a lot of interest worldwide. The four fighters are all in the prime of their careers – that’s what makes these match-ups so compelling.

GARY SHAW: I think it’s great for boxing that two great fighters are willing to fight each other and in the co-feature, two great heavyweights willing to fight each other. It’s going to be a fans’ fight and it’s great to be a part of it. July 26 is going to be a great night and Daniel Geale will be victorious

GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX PROMISES “FIREWORKS” FOR WORLD TITLE DEFENSE

Rigondeaux_Agbeko _131207_003a
MACAU, CHINA (July 18, 2014) – Undefeated unified junior featherweight world champion and Cuban sensation GUILLERMO “El Chacal” RIGONDEAUX (13-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Florida, has promised to provide “a lot of fireworks” when he defends his titles against Top-Five contender and two-time world title challenger SOD LOOKNONGYANTOY (63-2-1, 27 KOs), of Srithep, Thailand, This Saturday! July 19, at The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena. Rigondeaux will need them if he is to derail the “Looknongyantoy Express,” who enters this fight riding a nine-year, 37-bout unbeaten streak.

Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, All Star Boxing, Caribe Promotions and Foreman Boys Promotions, the Rigondeaux vs. Looknongyangtov world junior featherweight championship fight will be televised via same-day delay as the main event of Solo Boxeo Tecate on UniMás, beginning at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX
“I had a 10-week training camp with George Rubio where we focused on honing my combinations and power punching. I am taking nothing for granted with Looknongyantoy. He has an impressive record and he is a smart fighter.

“I intend to give UniMás and its boxing audience a great show. I plan to be more aggressive to be more impressive. But let me make this clear, I have been a world champion and an Olympic gold medalist for one reason – I do not make mistakes in the ring. I fight my fight, not my opponents’ fights. In baseball, great hitters do not swing at bad pitches.

“Hard training and discipline are my greatest assets as a fighter. I am dedicated to being the best boxer in the world and perfecting my technique. I am always the last man out of the gym in training camp. I never weigh more than 129 pounds between fights.

“I feel great and I think I can keep fighting at this elite level for many more years because I have never taken any punishment in the ring.

“I am frustrated that the two other champions in my division – Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez – will not step up to fight me in title unifications to determine the true world champion. I do not understand that mindset. How do you not want to prove you are the best? I do. Nonito Donaire did when we fought in our title unification battle in New York last year. The fans deserve better from Santa Cruz and Martinez. The media should be holding them accountable. A real champion fights and accepts the challenges from the best in his division. Back in the day, world champions accepted the top challenges. I get criticized by the media for my style of fighting. Maybe the media should be criticizing the champions who deny the fights boxing fans crave?”

SOD LOOKNONGYANTOY
“I have eight years of Muay Thai fighting experience, including over 400 victories. That has helped me to become a good boxer. I bring vast experience and intelligence.

“I trained hard for this fight. I trained to fight the perfect fight because that is what it will take to beat Rigondeaux. I do not fear him.

“I am up to the challenge. I am prepared to defeat Rigondeaux. I am ready to become world champion.”

Remaining tickets for the Rigondeaux vs. Looknongyangtov world junior featherweight championship event can be purchased via Cotai Ticketing™. Prices start at HKD/MOP 80, with ferry and hotel packages also available.

Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Florida, one of boxing’s top pound for pound fighters, returns to the ring making his 2014 debut. Last year he unified the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) 122-pound titles by defeating 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire on April 13, 2013, at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York. Rigondeaux thoroughly dominated Donaire via a unanimous decision victory, ending the Filipino Flash’s 12-year, 30-bout winning streak, as well as claiming his WBO junior featherweight title. Rigondeaux had a stellar amateur career, winning Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2000, World Amateur Championship titles in 2005 and 2001, and Pan American Games gold medals in 2005 and 2003, all at 119 pounds, before leaving Cuba to embark on a professional career which began in Miami in 2009. In only his seventh professional fight where both fighters scored knockdowns, Rigondeaux captured the WBA interim super bantamweight title, winning a tough split decision over the vastly more experienced former world champion Ricardo Cordoba in 2010. After successfully defending the interim title in 2011 with a first-round knockout of previously undefeated former European super bantamweight champion Willie Casey, Rigondeaux won the WBA world super bantamweight championship with a sixth-round knockout of previously undefeated defending champion Rico Ramos, January 20, 2012. Rigondeaux has successfully defended that title four times since then, blasting out once-beaten Teon Kennedy in the fifth round, which included Kennedy suffering five knockdowns en route to the loss, and winning a dominant unanimous decision over once-beaten contender Roberto Marroquin, both in 2012, besting Donaire in their April 2013 title unification fight and most recently, defeating former two-time world champion Joseph Agbeko, December 7 via a dominant unanimous decision.

Looknongyantoy (63-2-1, 27 KOs), of Srithep, Thailand, has twice challenged for the WBO junior featherweight title, losing to Daniel De Leon both times, in 2005 and 2006. Since then he has fashioned a nine -year, 37-bout unbeaten streak, which has included Asian, WBO Asia-Pacific and WBA Pan Asian 122-pound title victories. Possessing a style that features good skills and movement, he is currently world-rated No. 5 by the WBO and No. 10 by the WBA.

The SHOWTIME premiere of Canelo vs. Lara will also include last Saturday’s thrilling showdown between Juan Manuel Lopez and Francisco Vargas, which featured a Round of the Year candidate.

“The fight felt as close as the numbers indicated.” – Chris Mannix, Sports Illustrated

ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Lara Epilogue, the third and final installment of this edition of the SHOWTIME Sports EMMY® Award winning series, offers viewers a glimpse into the drama of fight night from a unique perspective and lifts the curtain on the rarely seen aftermath of world championship prizefighting.

HEAVYWEIGHT SPECIAL ATTRACTION ADDED TO UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING KING SPORTS’ UNDEFEATED AND WORLD-RATED AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT HOPEFUL CHARLES MARTIN TAKES ON KERTSON MANSWELL NEXT WEDNESDAY, JULY 23 AT B.B. KING BLUES CLUB & GRILL NYC

New York, NY (7/18/14) – Next Wednesday, July 23, at NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) will return with another edition of its popular and long-running Broadway Boxing series.

The already-stacked card got an even bigger boost this week when undefeated American heavyweight hopeful Charles Martin (17-0-1, 15KO’s) was added to the event. Martin, who is promoted by Michael King’s King Sports is set to see action against Kertson Manswell (24-8, 18KO’s) in a 10-round heavyweight special attraction.

The skilled 28-year-old southpaw Martin was the 2012 National PAL champion, as well as the 2012 National Golden Gloves runner-up, before turning pro later that same year in October. Martin has thus far kept up a blistering pace, fighting three times in 2012, 11 times in 2013, and has already fought four times this year. Martin holds impressive victories over previously undefeated prospects Vincent Thompson (13-0), Glendy Hernandez (10-0) and most recently Alexander Flores (14-0). The bout against Flores, which Martin won by fourth-round knockout, was for the vacant WBO NABO heavyweight title and moved Murray into the #7 spot in the WBO world ratings. Martin is also rated in the IBF at #15. All of Martin’s 15 career knockouts have come in four rounds or less. The hard-hitting Missouri-native will be looking to score another impressive victory as he continues to move up the heavyweight ladder, when he squares off against the former fringe contender Manswell on Wednesday night.

Headlining what promises to be a thrilling night of action on July 23 will be Ireland’s Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (27-1, 12KO’s) facing Noel Echevarria (11-3, 6KO’s) in an eight-round junior lightweight matchup.

Also featured on the card in separate bouts will be two exciting middleweights from the DBE roster. Former world title challenger Avtandil Khurtsidze (27-2-2, 16KO’s) will make his eagerly awaited return to the ring following an extended absence due to VISA and promotional issues. Ukrainian amateur standout and 2008 Olympian Sergey Derevyanchenko will make his much-anticipated debut in a six-round bout. Derevyanchenko is one of the best amateurs to ever come out of the storied Ukrainian amateur boxing program, compiling an astonishing 390-20 record in the process.

Local fighters appearing on the card will be DiBella Entertainment-promoted Long Islanders, light heavyweight Joe Smith (15-1, 12KO’s) and junior middleweight Patrick Day (7-0-1, 4KO’s). A rematch of a barnburner that occurred last February will round out the event with Danny Gonzalez (5-0-1, 3KO’s), of Queens, NY, facing Ray Velez (3-4-1, 1KO) in a six-round welterweight matchup.

Tickets for the Broadway Boxing event on July 23, sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Minnesota’s Caleb Truax Out for Redemption against Derek Ennis on Friday, July 25, at UIC Pavilion in Chicago

WBA #15, IBF #13, and WBO #11-rated Caleb “Golden” Truax (23-1-2, 14 KOs) of Osseo, Minnesota, admits he didn’t look so great in his last fight.

Paired up against notorious spoiler Ossie Duran in January of this year, live worldwide on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Truax’s red-hot streak of victories came to a screeching halt, as he struggled to earn even a draw after 10 tough rounds.

“I don’t want to make excuses; I just had an off night,” said Truax. “I didn’t fight very well. Ossie Duran is tough, but I should have beaten him convincingly. I just didn’t. It’s my job with this fight to prove it was a fluke and that I’m a better fighter than that. And I will.”

30-year-old Truax will get the chance to redeem himself and restart his career momentum when he takes on former USBA Junior Middleweight Champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis (24-4-1, 13 KOs) in the co-main event of “Conquerors”, a night of ESPN Friday Night Fights boxing on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion.

Tickets for “Conquerors” are priced at VIP $151, VIP Ringside $101, Mezzanine $51 and General Admission $31 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000), the 8 Count Productions Offices: 312-622-7668 or the UIC Pavilion Box Office: 312-413-5740.More information will be available shortly at 8CountProductions.com.

Truax says he’s not relying just on hope that his performance against Ennis will be stronger. He’s changed up his training regimen and lifestyle to help make sure.

“I made a few adjustments since my last camp and have started working with a personal trainer and nutritionist, so I’ll be a heathier as far as diet and have more energy when the fight comes around this time. It was a chance thing. I was preparing for the last fight and this guy, Josh Hutton, is someone I have mutual friends with in my hometown of Osseo. He ran into me in the gym and said he could help me out as far as nutrition goes and putting some science behind the things I’m doing. Me and my trainer, Tom Halstad, already did a lot of the same things, but he put some science behind it and it’s been paying dividends as far as strength goes. I’m moving more weight around in the gym and I’ve added more strength training and I’m doing several drills I wouldn’t normally do and it seems to help my energy. And as far as nutrition goes, he’s a real expert on making sure I get the most out of my body.”

Truax says he’s had Ennis in his sights before and is ready, despite him being a substitute for original opponent Porky Medina, who was injured.

“I was supposed to fight him before Ossie Duran and he pulled out with two weeks to go, so I’ve already done quite a bit of studying on him. He’s a slick Philly boxer. He’s tough and he tries to box and use angles and make people miss. It’ll be up to me to take it to him and let him know what it’s like to be under pressure and hopefully what it’s like to be knocked out.

Truax was riding a hot streak before the Duran setback. He looked strong against former world champion Jermain Taylor, even dropping Taylor in the ninth before losing a close decision. He then went on to take out local rivals Matt Vanda and Ceresso Fort and scored a nationally televised stoppage over then highly rated Don George.

The challenge will be to look so good against Ennis that his name starts coming up in discussions of big, televised fights.

“I want the biggest fights possible on Showtime or HBO to challenge myself. It’s all up to my manager, Ron Lyke, and my promoters, when they think I’m ready. I was kind of hoping to get something big after the Duran fight but that didn’t go as planned and I kind of have to get back on track with this fight. I’m ready to do that.”

Presented by Warriors Boxing, 8 Count Productions, Seconds Out Promotions and Marines Promotions, “Conquerors”, will also feature rejuvenated welterweight contender Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (35-3, 23 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, taking on hard-hitting and dangerous Breidis “Khanqueror” Prescott (27-5, 20 KOs) of Miami, via Barranquilla, Colombia in the night’s 10-round main event.

Scheduled to open the night’s worldwide, live broadcast is a light heavyweight six-rounder between Popular Chicago native and Notre Dame graduate Mike Lee (12-0, 7 KOs) and Paul Gonsalves (7-3, 3 KOs) of Hyannis, Massachusetts.

Time is becoming Golovkin’s biggest fight

By Norm Frauenheim-
Gennady Golovkin
Gennady Golovkin has one title he’d like to keep for as long as possible and another one he’d prefer to shed as soon as he can. Time makes the second of the two problematic. Golovkin is the latest in a long line of fighters who have been called the Most Avoided.

It’s unofficial, yet older than any acronym. It comes with grudging respect and even some popularity among fans looking for a people’s champ. But in terms of a career, it’s best only as a temporary step. For Golovkin, Most Avoided has been an inevitable stage in his move from Kazakhstan to Europe to the United States, from anonymity to Home Box Office.

But now Golovkin is 32.

The clock is ticking on when the middleweight champion gets a big-money shot in a fight that will allow him to relinquish a burdensome mantel inherited from Winky Wright and Antonio Margarito.

His chances at moving on and into a higher income bracket are hard to figure. For now, at least, his career resumes on July 26 at New York’s Madison Square Garden in an interesting bout against Australian Daniel Geale, a former middleweight champ who is among the division’s top five contenders. Geale is competent and clever enough for some to think he could take the fight into the later rounds against the unbeaten Golovkin, whose 26 stoppages in 29 victories give him the best KO ratio among current champions.

Through boxing’s twisted prism, a 12-round decision over the Aussie could turn into a good business decision for Golovkin, despite inevitable criticism that would be there in the immediate aftermath of the unexpected. No stoppage might lessen the fear and finally open the door to an opportunity against Miguel Cotto, or Canelo Alvarez, or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Andre Ward. Another stoppage might be just another reason to continue avoiding him.

Golovkin says he doesn’t worry about whether that big opportunity will ever be there. What else can he say?

“I don’t think much about this,’’ he said during a conference call Thursday from his training camp in the mountains of Big Bear, Calif. “But I know, I just heard, that when my team is finding fights, it is sometimes hard to get the fight with some fighters. That’s just what I hear. But I don’t think much about this.’’

Still, Golovkin is at an age when other fighters step into their prime for their biggest money in career-defining bouts. A couple of examples: Floyd Mayweather Jr., now 37, was 30 when he scored a split decision over Oscar De La Hoya in front of history’s biggest pay-per-view audience on May 5, 2007. Manny Pacquiao, now 35, was 11 days from turning 30 when he stepped into big money and international celebrity with his stoppage of De La Hoya on Dec. 6, 2008.

Then, there was Wright and Margarito. Wright was 32 when he shed the Most Avoided tag in March 2004 with the first of two straight victories over Shane Mosley and then a stunner over Felix Trinidad. Margarito was 30 when he got out from under the label with an upset of Cotto in July, 2008.

From Mayweather and Pacquiao to Wright and Margarito, the timing is similar. For Golovkin, it’s becoming urgent.

THE “MAYHEM” MARVELS: MAYWEATHER vs. MAIDANA 2 PRESS TOUR WRAPS UP IN LOS ANGELES

Floyd Mayweather
LOS ANGELES (July 17, 2014) – Eleven-time world champion Floyd Mayweather and former welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana held their fifth and final announcement press conference in Pershing Square in Los Angeles, Calif. on Thursday to formally discuss their highly anticipated rematch taking place Saturday, Sept. 13 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Thursday’s press event in Los Angeles concluded a whirlwind five-city, open-to-the-public promotional tour that saw the fighters visit the boxing hotbeds of New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Antonio.

With Mayweather speaking at the podium, a member of Maidana’s team was throwing t-shirts into the pro-Argentine crowd in an attempt to take the attention away from Mayweather. Numerous Argentinian flags waved in the air on a picture perfect afternoon that also happened to be Maidana’s 31st birthday.

Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist and Los Angeles native Kendrick Lamar entertained the capacity crowd, which was evenly split for Mayweather and Maidana, prior to the arrival of the World Champion fighters.

Jarrett Stoll and Alec Martinez, two members of the Stanley Cup winning Los Angeles Kings, presented Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana jerseys with “Money” and “Chino” emblazoned on the back at the start of the press conference.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Thursday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Eleven-Time, Five-Division World Champion

“Everything on this media tour has been going great. It was crazy to be able to go to Washington D.C. and hold a press conference at midnight and it still be packed. That shows that boxing is very much alive and has loyal fans.

“I started training last night after the ESPYs at 2 a.m., there is no more partying for me, it’s time to start getting focused on this fight.

“Marcos Maidana is a very, very dirty fighter. In our last fight he had over 10 low blows, head butts. He’s in the wrong sport if he wants to fight a bare knuckle brawl, this is boxing. We are both looking to have careers after boxing; I don’t want to risk my health.

“The reason I chose Maidana for a rematch is because of the fans. The bar is set so high for me, the fans expect so much out of me.

“In past fights I would go out and win all 12 rounds. This is the first time my fans have seen someone win multiple rounds against me.

“To be honest, Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are better fighters than Maidana. They are better, stronger boxers. With me and Canelo, it was more of a chess match as opposed to Maidana who came at me very dirty and reckless. I knew something crazy was going to happen in our fight, which it did, I got a headbutt.

“Even though we are in a brutal sport, if you beat me, do it the right way. I got here with hard work and dedication and a strong belief in my team. Please don’t cheat to beat me, if you are going to beat me, earn it the hard way.

“I don’t have to make any adjustments going into this fight, but he does. I won the fight. If I spar against someone and they win three of 12 rounds against me, that’s a bad day for me. I am a perfectionist and I set the bar so high. Maidana knows in his heart that he didn’t win.

“I know that if I lost this fight, then I wouldn’t take it again. Maidana isn’t stupid, the reason why he is trying to fight me again is because he is going to make more money fighting me than anyone else, even though he knows he will lose again.”

MARCOS MAIDANA, Former WBA Welterweight World Champion

“The situation with the gloves is an open issue. It hasn’t been closed yet. I’m going to talk to my team, we are going to push for my gloves and he’s probably going to fight back. But we won’t surrender, we’ll keep pushing.

“In our first fight, the glove’ issue affected me a little. But now, I know how he [Mayweather] operates and if he wants different gloves, I’ll have different gloves waiting for him. I’ll bring a few options so I’m not caught off guard again.

“Back in May, I tried to get the attention of the referee in the eighth round because Floyd was fighting very dirty and he didn’t even honor that, he tried to pull a Victor Ortiz shot on me. That’s the type of fighter he is – dirty and sneaky.

“In all of his fights, he [Mayweather] brings his elbows out. He really likes to use his elbows. One of his moves is to put his elbow in the fighter’s throat and the referee for some reason let him get away with it. We all know he [Mayweather] does whatever he wants because he has the judges in his pocket. He is a dirty fighter.

“There were rumors that I got paid to use Floyd’s gloves, but that’s not true. I had to accept his gloves because otherwise there was not going to be a fight. He basically called off the fight if I didn’t use his gloves, so I had to, I had no choice. Unlike him, I had come to fight, not to whine.

“It is no secret that I won the first rounds and he [Mayweather] did better on the last ones. This time around I’m planning to keep up with his rhythm. I’m making adjustments, when he presses I’m going to press him too.

“In my first fight against Floyd, I learned that he’s not that great, he’s not that superhuman boxer everybody talks about. If I wouldn’t have been so anxious looking for the knockout, I would have beat him.

“I think Floyd is going to run around inside the ring. In our first fight, he said he was going to stand up and fight and he didn’t. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if this time around he does the same thing.

“I pushed him in San Antonio because he gets too close to my face.

“I really don’t understand him [Mayweather], so I don’t really care for what he says about me. I know he speaks ill, but I don’t care.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Maidana’s Trainer & 2012 Trainer of the Year

“Mayweather’s been going around saying that Maidana’s a dirty fighter. This is boxing; Maidana finds a way to win.

“If Mayweather believes the first fight was rough, this next fight will be much rougher, believe me.

“I’m bringing somebody new to the training camp. We are starting with basics, running in the morning, timing him. It’s going to be run hard, train hard, eat well and rest. That’s our recipe to win this upcoming fight.

“I’m going to try to bring him into the ring at a different weight this time. Not as heavy. I think that was a mistake on my behalf. Since it was the first time fighting Mayweather, we wanted to take any advantage.

“Floyd is not as strong as we thought, so we are not making that mistake again. Chino would have been a lot faster and a lot stronger if he would have walked into that ring lighter. He would have had the same energy he had in the first six rounds.

“Sixteen years ago, Mayweather and I were both world champions. He mentioned that he would’ve liked to fight me, but we don’t need to do it on pay-per-view. We can take a walk out back and we’ll handle business. I am from Southern California and we know how to handle our business.

“I give Mayweather props for having beautiful women with him. Too bad when they are no longer on payroll they are going to walk away.

“He bet Chino’s purse and we responded by saying we’ll take the bet if Chino can wear his Mexican Everlast gloves. All I need is a handshake from him, but I know I won’t get that.”

SEBASTIAN CONTURSI, Maidana’s Manager

“We will beat Floyd Mayweather, but first I want to thank Floyd. He is a man of his word giving Chino the rematch.

“We need all the Latinos to support Chino on Sept. 13. You guys are the driving force behind his success.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Mayweather has beat everybody he has faced in the world, everybody. The two fighters will get in there on Sept. 13 and the best fighter will win and we all know who that will be.

“You can’t disrespect Mayweather’s accomplishments. He’s the highest-paid athlete in the world and he leads by example. He is not only going to go down as the best to ever do, but also as the best businessman.

“If you just go out there and beat each other’s brains out then you aren’t going to relate to your kids. Floyd’s a very smart fighter and he’s going to do what he has to do to win the fight.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President, Golden Boy Promotions

“Mayweather and his team have been very professional throughout the tour and they did a great job.

“Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is committed to making the best fights and this match up is no exception. The first fight was great, close and dangerous. Floyd didn’t have to take this fight, but he wanted to give the fans what they want. I want to thank him for stepping up.”

“Maidana is up to the task of taking on Floyd Mayweather a second time. He [Maidana] is ready to silence any doubters.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports

“SHOWTIME PPV has become the industry leader in PPV fights. These events keep getting bigger, better and more exciting.

“The first fight between Mayweather and Maidana was one of the most exciting fights in boxing history and the second fight will be even better.

“There is no event like a Mayweather fight with the music and the celebrities. You add to that the ferocity of a hungry fighter like Maidana and you have the recipe for another unforgettable fight.”

Tomorrow night’s edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra from the Paramount Theater in Huntington, N.Y. (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes+, WatchESPN), will feature a unique perspective when referees Steve Willis and Pete Santiago wear point-of-view cameras to give viewers a first-person point of view of all the sweat-spraying action inside the ring. Melson Injures Rotator Cuff; Tapia Fight Off!

New York, NY (July 17, 2014) – Junior Middleweight Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson has been forced to withdraw from his Saturday, July 26 bout against contender Glen Tapia.

Melson, who was in the best shape of his professional career and prepared in an extended training camp, believes he tore his left rotator cuff Tuesday during one of his final sparring sessions. A 2008 Olympic Alternate selection, the West Point grad gave up his spot after suffering the same injury. He’d also had his left rotator cuff operated on twice in the past, including in 2008 after tearing it.

“I felt it stretch when I was throwing a punch and I immediately knew something wasn’t right,” said the dejected Melson. “I tried to work through it but the pain only got worse. First, my shoulder started to throb then it got cold. Since I hurt my rotator cuff and had surgery twice in the past, I know what a tear feels like.”

Even though he had a feeling what just took place the second his shoulder started hurting, he was hoping the pain would go away. Unfortunately, it didn’t.

“I didn’t want to believe it because I’ve worked incredibly hard and understand the significance of the Tapia fight. Not only was it a dream of mine to fight at Madison Square Garden, but a victory over Tapia would’ve put me in position to start earning significant money for Team Fight to Walk. This is truly devastating and I am heartbroken, especially after what happened during my last fight. I’m very emotional right now and don’t know what the future holds.”

All tickets purchased from Teamfighttowalk.com will be refunded.

In association with the 501 (C) 3 nonprofit Justadollarplease.org, Melson and his best friend Christan Zaccagnino created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community as well as the entire nation about the importance of bringing Clinical Trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, Zaccagnino, former Rutgers football player/ESPY honoree Eric LeGrand, two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, Austin “No Doubt” Trout, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Sonya Lamonakis, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr., WBO Junior Middleweight titlist/2008 US Olympian Demetrius “Boo” Andrade and fellow 08’ Olympian Shawn Estrada along with prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Jeff “TNT” Spencer, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Will “Power” Rosinsky, Floriano “Italiano” Pagliara, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

A Cebu, Philippines native, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (27-1-1, 15 KOs) started 2014 off in impressive style scoring an eight-round technical knockout win over Edgar Riovalle in his adopted hometown of San Diego in April. Now taking his gloves up north to face Arceo, the 26-year-old southpaw is ready to make a statement as he returns to San Francisco for the first time since 2011. Tijuana’s Luis “El Vampiro” Arceo (28-12-4, 19 KOs) is as tough as they come, a veteran of nearly 14 years, who has faced fighters such as Josesito Lopez, Anthony Peterson, Urbano Antillon and Jose Armando Santa Cruz. Twenty-five-year-old junior welterweight prospect Jonathan “El Carismatico” Chicas (13-1, 6 KOs) is an impressive talent with a large fan following in his hometown of San Francisco. Training Camp Notes: Derric Rossy “It is going to be a heck of a brawl!”

Brooklyn, NY: Heavyweight Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov (17-0-1, 11 KOs) may be coming off a major upset victory over veteran Tomasz “Goral” Adamek (49-3, 29 KOs) but his next opponent Derric “El León” Rossy (29-8, 14 KOs) believes he is going to be Czar’s biggest challenge to date. The two are slotted to face-off as the main event on the next installment of NBCSN Fight Night (a special triple header edition) live from Sands Casino Hotel in Bethlehem, PA on August 9. This will also be Rossy’s Fight Night debut.

The two heavyweights are both 6’3″ tall and Rossy wants to warn fans, “It is going to be a heck of a brawl!” Rossy, 34, has 37 professional fights on his resume while his younger opponent, Glazkov, 29, has less than half as many with 18. Rossy warned, “Everyone wants a knockout. It is going to be a great fight. You’ve got two hungry guys looking to go at it. My prediction is this is going to be an unbelievable fight.”

Rossy is coming off an upset majority decision victory over Joe Hanks on May 16th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. That fight was his first with trainer Grant Seligson. The two are training for this upcoming fight at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY. When asked about what it is like to train Rossy, Grant replied, “Training Derric is a pleasure. He listens to everything. He is very open-minded. We get along great. We are a great team.” El León declined to reveal his game plan for Czar but did have this prediction, “You are going to see a slugfest but you are also going to see some great boxing. It is going to have everything.”

As part of his preparation for this fight Rossy and Seligson watched Czar’s fight against Adamek on March 15th. As a result Rossy had this analysis of his young opponent, “We’ve seen some film on him. The kid is a really sound fighter. We need to be at our best. There is no slacking on this. There are no easy fights but this kid can really fight. We are excited to meet the challenge. With the Adamek fight he really showed that he wasn’t just a prospect. He is very sound at what he does.” His manager, Sal Musumeci added, “Derric is a veteran. He has tremendous worldwide experience fighting many top and world-ranked fighters. Derric is a true warrior. I believe this fight will be Glazkov’s real test not Adamek. He’s in for the real test on August 9.”

This will be Czar’s third appearance at Sands Casino Hotel in Bethlehem, PA. Rossy is from Medford, NY and believes Czar will have the home crowd advantage at Sands but he said, “I hope my fans can get out to see the fight. The more support the better for me but I am not a stranger to being in the enemy territory. It doesn’t bother me.” Musumeci added, “When you get two heavyweights like this to step up and face each other, when most of the heavyweights out there are so selective and sit around and wait for an opportunity, this shows the heart of two world class heavyweights getting in the ring to put on a great show. The winner of this deserves a world title shot.”

About August 9:

Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, All Star Boxing, Caribe Promotions and Foreman Boys Promotions, Ramirez vs. Talipeau will be televised via same-day delay on HBO2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET/PT. The HBO2 telecast will also feature two-time Chinese Olympic gold medallist and national icon ZOU SHIMING (4-0, 1 KO),of Guizhu, China, stepping up to his first 10-round bout, facing off against hard-punching veteran and three-time world title challenger LUIS “Chino” DE LA ROSA, (23-3-1, 13 KOs), of Barranquilla, Colombia. Zou and De La Rosa will be fighting for the vacant WBO International flyweight title in a battle of Top-10 contenders. Zou and De La Rosa are world-rated No. 6 by the WBA and No. 10 by the IBF, respectively.

GILBERTO RAMIREZ
“I am very excited to be making my HBO debut on this card and I want to make a good impression so I can continue fighting on HBO. This is the Zurdo Ramirez Era and I want to shine. I am prepared for Junior Talipeau and I am prepared to give a good show on Saturday. I want to prove — in the most emphatic terms — that I am ready to challenge for a world title.

“This is my first time in Macau and I love it. The Venetian Macao is fabulous and the fans here are great. The climate in Macau is similar to Mazatlan and I had no problem adjusting to the time zone change. My punches land just as hard here as they do in the Western Hemisphere.”

JUNIOR TALIPEAU
“I am excited for this fight and have trained very hard. I am impressed with Ramirez’s accomplishments but I am no intimidated by them. I intend to attack him early and bang his body and head and stop him late in the fight.

“It’s a great incentive to be the first one to blemish his perfect record and derail his world title shot plans. I did not travel to Macau to be another number in Ramirez’s victory column. I came here to win. I came here to hurt.”

****************************

Ramirez (28-0, 22 KOs), of Mazatlan, Mexico, is world-rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 3 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 4 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF). A sensational young contender, Ramirez, 23, has won both his 2014 bouts by knockout. In his last outing, on April 11, he captured the NABF and NABO super middleweight titles via a fifth-round knockout of two-time world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo.

Talipeau (20-2-1, 7 KOs), a New Zealand native who fights out of Kogarah, New South Wales, Australia, was a former Australian middleweight champion who successfully defended the title five times during his two-year reign before moving up to the super middleweight division. Boasting a victory over two-time world title challenger Shannan Taylor, Talipeau enters this fight having won two of his last three fights by way of knockout. His most recent victory was a 12-round unanimous decision over Walter Crucce for the WBA Latin American super middleweight title. He is currently world-rated No. 14 by the WBA.

Roy Jones to fight on in Latvia on July 26

royjones2
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr. will fight on July 26 in Latvia.

He will take on Courtney Fry (18-5, 6 KOs) in a 12-round Cruiserweight bout.

“I know he’ll give it all he got, which is what I want from any opponent,” Jones said. “I want to go out and do my thing and take what I’ve been doing in the gym to the boxing ring.”

The fight is the main event of a card that is also scheduled to feature long-faded heavyweight James Toney (76-9-3, 46 KOs), Jones’ one-time rival and a former three-division titleholder. They met in a 1994 super middleweight world championship fight that Jones won by one-sided decision to claim the 168-pound belt.

Toney, 45, is scheduled to fight 6-foot-9, 330-pound Evgeny Orlov (15-12-1, 11 KOs), 35, of Russia. KP Promotion, which is putting on the card, initially wanted to match Jones with Toney in a rematch, but Jones said he had no interest.

“I’m not doing that. For what reason? What do I gain from that? What am I gaining from that fight,” Jones said. “I already beat him and beating him again does nothing for me. Besides, I want to fight for the cruiserweight title. I ain’t interested in going up to heavyweight again.”

“You do think about it but it’s hard to leave when you know you still got it. I know I still got it,” he said. “I’m very much looking forward to [going to Latvia].”

Jones has not recorded a knockout victory since stopping former super middleweight titlist Jeff Lacy in the 10th round in August 2009.

“I will get one this time,” Jones said.

Garcia vs. Ramirez in “Border War” for the vacant CA State Title!

(San Diego) – The first time the California State super featherweight title was contested it was back in 1933 when Eddie Shea stopped Chalky Wright in the first round at the Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. Since then the likes of Jorge Ramos, Alberto Reyes and Juan Escobar held it against their waist in the ’70s, Richard Savala, Refugio Rojas, Greg Puente and the late great Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez held it in the ’80s, Ben Lopez ruled it in the ’90s before Isagani Pumar took it over. Juaquin Gallardo of Oakland was the last man to hold it by taking a unanimous decision over Luis Alfonso Lizarraga in Fresno.

Next Friday, July 25th, it will be the turn of Vista’s won Aaron “Gavilan” Gracia (14-3-2, 4KOs), born and raised in San Diego. The task won’t be easy since he will be facing hungry Tijuana tough guy Daniel “Huracan” Ramirez (10-1, 4KO), fighting out of Los Angeles, who is ready to bring on a storm in the scheduled eight round championship bout.
The bout will be the main event of the latest edition of “San Diego Fights: Border Wars II” presented by California Hall of Fame promoter Bobby D. Presents at the undisputed home for San Diego boxing, the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Dereck Chisora to battle Tyson Fury in 2014’s BIGGEST rematch on Saturday, July 26 live on AWE

Chisora_Fury_Poster
San Diego, CA – July, 17, 2014 -On Saturday afternoon, July 26, Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) and Tyson Fury (22-0 16 KO’s) will do battle in a twelve round Heavyweight fight that is being called the biggest rematch of 2014.

The fight, which will be staged at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, England, will televised live and exclusively in the United States on AWE–A Wealth of Entertainment.

The two top-ten heavyweights met almost three years ago to the day (July 23, 2011) in a bout that saw Fury win a hotly contested unanimous decision. Fast forward three years and there is some serious bad blood as both Fury and Chisora have professed tremendous disdain for each other and each is vowing a knockout.

To add to the animosity, the European, British and WBO International Heavyweight titles will all be on the line. Maybe most importantly this bout is a final eliminator for the number-one spot in the WBO and gives the winner a crack at unified world Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

“We are ecstatic to bring this five-star fight to the fans of the United States”, said AWE CEO Robert Herring. “This fight has so many story lines that range from the great first fight to two guys that really dislike each other to the belts and of course a shot at Klitschko. There will be a winner in the ring but the big winners will be the fans of the United States who will get to witness this can’t miss Heavyweight fight on AWE,”.

Chisora of London already has had a taste of a world title opportunity but he came up short when he put up a courageous effort against then-WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in 2012.

He established himself as a Heavyweight contender by winning his first thirteen bouts with wins over the like of Sam Sexton (7-0 & 13-1) plus Mike Tyson conqueror, Danny Williams (41-8). He won the British Heavyweight title with win over Williams and that put him in line to face fellow undefeated Fury.

After that great fight, Chisora took on a murderers’ row of opponents that saw Chisora lose a controversial decision to undefeated Rober Helenius (16-0). Chisora won in the court of public opinion as his performance against Helenius facilitated a shot at Klitschko. Chisora was as competitive as any recent Klitschko opponent but he dropped a unanimous decision to the longtime Ukrainian champion. In his next bout he was stopped for the only time in his career by former two-division world champion David Haye.

Chisora has been undeterred as he has won five bouts in a row against top competition. He captured the WBO International title with a 6th round stoppage over Malik Scott (35-0-1). He won the European title with a 5th round stoppage of Edmund Gerber (23-1). Dereck won the WBA International title with a 3rd-round destruction of Ondrej Pala (32-3). In his last bout he scored a 12-round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Kevin Johnson (29-4-1) on February 15.

Fury of Manchester, England has become a lightning rod for controversy and in the process, his fights have become must-see television.

The 6’9″ behemoth has been groomed to become an heir apparent in the Heavyweight division and has scored big wins over Marcel Zeller (21-3), Scott Velshaw (10-1). He won the English title with a 10-round unanimous decision over John McDermott (25-5) and then stopped him 9 rounds in the rematch.

Fury continued on a path of destruction as beat undefeated foes and quality opposition such as Rich Power (12-0), Marcelo Nascimento (13-0), Chisora (14-0), Neven Pajic (16-0), Martin Rigan (14-2), Vinny Maddalone (35-7) & Johnson (28-2-1).

Fury showed his heart and determination when he was dropped hard in the 2nd round by two-time Cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (25-5). Fury was down on the scorecards but cameback to score a 7th round stoppage in Fury’s American debut at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Fury was twice scheduled to fight Haye but the former two-division champ had to pull out both times with injuries.

That kept Fury on the sidelines for 10-months until he came back on February 15 and took out American Joey Abell (29-7) in four rounds.

More bouts will be announced shortly

Nugaev vs. Shafikov Headline ESPN Friday Night Fights at Chumash Casino August 15

NEW JERSEY (July 17, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions highly ranked lightweight contender, Rustam Nugaev (27-6-1, 17 KOs) has officially signed to fight Russia’s Denis Shafikov (33-1-1, 18 KOs) in a 12-round IBF elimination bout. The fight will air live on ESPN “Friday Night Fights” and will take place at Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., on August 15, 2014.

Nugaev, who hails from Perm, Russia, but now resides in Southern California, is thrilled at the opportunity to once again showcase his talents on ESPN. Nugaev is ranked IBF #5, WBC #3 and WBA #7. A victory against Shafikov will certainly put him in position to fight for the IBF world title, against current champion, Richar Abril.

“I’m very happy that my promoter Gary Shaw is making this fight happen, especially on ESPN “Friday Night Fights”, said Nugaev. “Since I’ve returned from Russia to the United States, I’ve had five knockouts in a row. I feel I’m a much better fighter now compared to early in my career. Whoever stands in my way of becoming a world champion, I will destroy. Against Shafikov, I will show the world why I deserve to fight for a world championship.”

Denis Shafikov is coming off his first professional loss, a unanimous decision defeat to IBF Lightweight Champion, Miguel Vasquez (34-3, 13 KOs). He’ll be looking to get back in the win column against Nugaev with the hopes of getting another world title shot.

“I learned some valuable lessons in my loss to Vasquez,” said Shafikov. “Nugaev is a very tough opponent and I must stick to my game plan to be victorious. He’s never been in the ring with a fighter of my magnitude so I’m confident in my ability to come out victorious. I have the edge in experience and will use it to my advantage. I’m very excited to be fighting on ESPN, the exposure will be fantastic.”

“Everyone was ducking Nugaev so I’m happy Shafikov accepted the challenge,” said Gary Shaw. “I also want to thank the IBF ratings committee for honoring their word on making this fight an elimination bout. Nugaev is a remarkable fighter, who I believe will become world champion by the end of the year. First he must get past Shafikov, who is a very tough fighter. The fans will enjoy this fight. Everyone should be tuning in.”

The ESPN “Friday Night Fights” telecast begins Friday August 15, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST from the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.
