Vilier Quinonez preparing to drop and stop Jerry Odum July 25 on ShoBox In battle of undefeated super middleweights

MIAMI (July 16, 2014) – Undefeated former Cuban amateur star Vilier Quinonez (8-0, 5 KOs) will make his U.S. network debut July 25 against unbeaten super middleweight prospect Jerry Odum (11-0, 10 KOs) in an eight-round bout, airing on ShoBox: The New Generation, live from Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.

“It’s a privilege for me to fight on ShoBox,” Quinonez said. “I plan to fight impressively so Cuban and American fans alike get to know me better. I know my opponent is 11-0 with 10 knockouts, but I’ll be prepared to do whatever it takes to pull off a victory.”

The 29-year-old Quinonez had a 275-28 amateur record in Cuba, including back-to-back gold and silver medal performances in the World Junior Championships. The 6′ 2″ southpaw, who relocated last fall from Chicago to Miami, isn’t your typical defense-first Cuban boxer.

“My roots are in amateur boxing and I learned a lot in Cuba,” Quinones explained, “but I’ve worked hard in the gym to apply the American style of fighting. I feel comfortable and continue working hard every day to improve my new style.”

Quinonez’ head trainer, Orlando Cuellar, may be best known as chief second for former world champion Glen Johnson, but he has worked with many Cuban fighters in Miami gyms, including current world-rated light heavyweight Yunieski Gonzalez (14-0). He knows first-hand that Quinonez isn’t your typical Cuban professional boxer.

“Vilier’s going to be looking to set-up his opponent,” Cuellar noted, “making adjustments during the fight to stop him. We’re going to win one round at a time, breaking his opponent down and stop him before the final bell. At the end of the day, his job is to drop and stop his opponent. Vilier will check everywhere – chin, body, etc. – a full inspection to see where his opponent’s weaknesses are and expose ’em.

“We’ve been together about 10 months. I didn’t take anything away from his style. I’m just making him a more complete fighter. He’s throwing combinations, head and body shots, not doing what he did to win in the amateurs. We’ve worked on him getting inside, applying pressure, and dissecting and breaking down his opponent. I never like leaving the results in the hands of the judges. Vilier needs to be in charge; he’s the boss and he’s going in the ring to stop his opponent.”

Main Event:
Both fighters are looking to get back to their winning ways — California’s Mayfield is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Thomas Dulorme. Taylor, who hails from Maryland, is looking to rebound from a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Algieri.

“We feel like Emanuel Taylor is a pretty good fighter, but I just feel like he’s not going to be able to mess with Karim,” said LaRon Mayfield, Mayfield’s brother and manager. “I feel like Karim’s not going to be at a disadvantage in height. He should be able to touch him with that jab and put all his punches where they need to be….This fight, I see Karim coming out victorious.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round co-feature will pit undefeated Welterweight Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (13-0, 10 KOs) of New York against Virginia’s “The Mongolian Mongoose” Bayan Jargal (17-5-3, 10 KOs). Palacios to Promote and Headline September 20 in Orlando!

Orlando, FL (July 16, 2014) – Former two time world title challenger and top rated cruiserweight Francisco “Wizard” Palacios makes his long-awaited return to the ring Saturday, September 20 but in a different role than the average fighter.

Tired of empty promises along with fights falling apart, Palacios founded World Wide Elite Entertainment last month and is playing the role of main event fighter as well as promoter of “The Comeback”.

This special fight card takes place at the elegant Mela Room, located at 9677 S. Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando 25 dollar general admission, $45 ringside and $500 VIP tables of 6 with bottle service included are on sale by calling 561-702-7068. All ticketholders over the age of 21 are invited to a special post-fight party at the Mela Room hosted by DJ Eric.

Palacios has an excellent 21-2 record with 13 victories coming by way of knockout. The Orlando based Puerto Rican holds knockout victories over fellow title contenders Louis Azille and Luis Pineda but was on the wrong end of two controversial decisions in the home country of WBC champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. Unfortunately, promotional and managerial issues kept him out of the ring since September 2012.

His opponent will be announced shortly.

In the co-main event, contender Rowland Bryant of Almonte Springs, FL battles an opponent to be named. Bryant, 18-3 (12 KO’s), scored a massive upset a few years back, knocking out iron-chinned Librado Andrade inside of three rounds. A victory on the 20th could move him back into contention.

In separate undercard bouts, world title challenger Mike Marrone, Contender Season 4 Alum Alfredo Escalera Jr. and 2008 Cuban Olympian Idel Torriente will all face opponents TBA.

“This is a new venture for me and something that I need at this point in my career,” said Palacios. “I fought twice for a world title and won my first 20 pro fights, only to have politics put me on the sidelines. As a promoter, I’m not only going to get myself back in the title picture but also assist other fighters that were mistreated in the past.

Fans can follow and interact with Francisco on Twitter @Wizardpalacios.

Roy Englebrecht Promotions Announces Top Trainer Henry Ramirez Joins Team Flores

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – Following his first defeat as a pro after winning his first 14 bouts, heavyweight prospect Alexander Flores and his manager/trainer Michael Love, along with their promoter Roy Englebrecht announced that legendary boxing trainer Henry Ramirez has joined Team Flores as a training advisor. Flores tasted defeated last April as he was stopped in the fourth round by undefeated Charles Martin on a Kings Sports show in Santa Monica.

“I was approached by Michael Love and after our meeting I accepted the offer and am excited about joining their team,” said Ramirez. “I’ve known about Alexander Flores for a few years as he has sparred with Chris Arreola in preparation for a number of fights, and Alex is a good young heavyweight fighter.”

Only 23 years of age, Flores is the youngest heavyweight rated in the IBO Top 100, and is set to climb back in the ring in October.

“When I contacted Henry he didn’t hesitate and said he would help in any way he could,” stated Love. “I believe in building a strong team to surround Alex, and with the additional of Henry Ramirez I think we now have in place what is needed to be able to succeed at a high level. Regardless of his loss to Martin, Alexander will be in this sport for a long time and will only get better.”

With Ramirez on board Flores has agreed to a strict training schedule that will see him training in Victorville Monday thru Wednesday and in Riverside working one-on-one with Ramirez the rest of the week.

“The reason that both Roy and I are excited about Henry joining our team is that he has been through the ups and downs with Chris Arreola and knows the pitfalls and how to correct them. He believes in Alex’s ability and has been noted saying that Alex can FN fight,” said Love.

” I appreciate Michael Love moving in this direction to get some quality help in working with Alex,” said Roy Englebrecht who has a five year promotional agreement with Flores. “I have known Henry for a number of years and have always appreciated his no-nonsense way of working with fighters. He will bring a new discipline and attitude to Team Flores, and as a promoter that is music to my ears.”

“Alexander Flores has a million dollar smile, the looks of a GQ Model, and the talent to be successful in the heavyweight division,” said Englebrecht. “So this is the first step in Chapter Two for Team Flores and come October 16th at Fight Club OC we will see a new and improved fighter.”

Hailing from Rowland Heights, California, 6-5, 225 pound Alexander “The Great” Flores (14-1-12 KOs) didn’t spend much time in the amateur ranks, but after compiling an impressive 14-2 record and winning the Southern California Golden Gloves, he took his skills to the professional arena, debuting with a second round knockout of Antonio Robertson on March 19, 2010. In 2011, with three wins already under his belt, Flores upped his level of competition and didn’t skip a beat, as he defeated highly-touted former University of Miami football star Quadtrine Hill in April, and followed that victory up with a third round knockout of Serhiy Karpenko.

WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade to Canelo Alvarez: “The line forms behind me”

Andrade UK 2
Philadelphia (July 16, 2014)– After a successful trip of the United Kingdom, WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s) wants to make it clear that he is the man to beat at 154 pounds and wants Canelo Alvarez and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya to know that he would be interested in facing the Mexican star in a fall bout.

“I read some comments that Oscar made to Lara after the fight that there is a line about 10 people deep to fight Canelo and Lara would have to get to the back of it. What Oscar failed to mention is that line forms behind me.”, said the undefeated champion.

“I am the WBO champion and I am undefeated. As I look down the rankings, I just defeated my mandatory Brian Rose and Alvarez is ranked number-two by the WBO. He will be elevated to number-one and I am ready and willing to fight him for my title. I just hope he would be prepared for the beating I will put on him.”

Andrade is promoted by Banner Promotions and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing

LAS VEGAS – Fresh off a successful debut on network television, World Series of Fighting returns to NBCSN for “World Series of Fighting 12: Palomino vs. Gonzalez,” which takes place Aug. 9 at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

In the night’s co-feature, Brazilian brawler Ronny Markes (14-3) returns to light heavyweight to make his World Series of Fighting debut against undefeated submission machine Kelvin “The Mama’s Boy” Tiller (6-0).

The night’s main card also features a middleweight attraction when Bosnian-born Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-3) returns to the World Series of Fighting decagon against undefeated Bulgarian-born standout Krasimir Mladenov (11-0). Two exciting bantamweights kick off the NBCSN telecast, as ageless Olympian Alexis Vila (13-4) takes on Brandon “Hot Rod” Hempleman (9-2).

“We had an incredible July event on network television, and our roster is full of hungry fighters who want to have that same type of opportunity,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “We’re happy to be back at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for World Series of Fighting 12, where all four main-card matchups feature fighters who can really make an impact with a solid performance, and it’s capped off by what looks like a thrilling fight between Luis Palomino and Lewis Gonzalez, both of whom want to be the next to challenge our incredible lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje.”

The evening’s main card airs live on NBCSN. The broadcast begins on Saturday, August 9, at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT local time). Preliminary contests will be announced shortly and will stream live on NBCSN.com.

Tickets for “World Series of Fighting 12: Palomino vs. Gonzalez” start at just $39 and are on sale now at AXS.com.

Luis Palomino returns to action for the first time since a “Fight of the Year” candidate knockout win over Jorge Patino at January’s World Series of Fighting 8 event. The eight-year veteran boasts 12 knockouts among his 22 career wins and is known for putting on thrilling performances. He now meets gritty 26-year-old Lewis Gonzalez, who is unbeaten through the first nine fights of his professional career. Gonzalez made an immediate impact at World Series of Fighting in his promotional debut, scoring an upset win over gritty veteran Antonio McKee at World Series of Fighting 4.

The 26-year-old Ronny Markes is a member of Brazil’s famed Nova Uniao fight team, home to some of the top fighters in the world. Markes returns to the 205-pound division, where he won 12 of his 13 bouts as professional before embarking on a four-fight run at middleweight. He now meets the undefeated Kelvin Tiller, who is perfect through the first six fights of his career and now looks to prove himself on a national stage. Tiller has earned four of his six wins by submission, and three of those came in the opening round.

Elvis Mutapcic was a member of World Series of Fighting’s inaugural middleweight championship tournament but suffered a decision loss to tourney finalist Jesse Taylor. Still, Mutapcic is 5-1 in his past six career outings, and 11 of his 13 career wins have come by knockout or submission. Meanwhile, the durable fighter has never been finished, as all three of his losses came by way of decision. He now meets Krasimir Mladenov, who has already notched a pair of wins under the World Series of Fighting banner with past victories over Angel DeAnda and Kendrick Miree.

Alexis Vila remains one of the top bantamweights in the world, even at 43 years old. The Cuban national was a bronze medal-winning wrestler at the 1996 Summer Olympics and is currently 3-1 in his past four fights, with the lone loss coming in a heartbreaking decision result to a game Josh Rettinghouse at World Series of Fighting 6. He now faces Brandon Hempleman, who came up short in a hard-fought No. 1 contender fight against current World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes at World Series of Fighting 4. Hempleman lost the fight but gained fans as he weathered an incredible storm of offense in a losing result that snapped six-fight winning streak.

LANDMARK 200th SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION TELECAST FEATURES QUADRUPLE HEADER FILLED WITH SIGNIFICANT TESTS FOR YOUNG PROSPECTS

NEW YORK (July 16, 2014) – ShoBox: The New Generation will celebrate its 200th telecast on Friday, July 25 the same way it started 13 years ago: matching highly regarded prospects in what could be the toughest fights of their careers.

The quadruple header, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), features eight fighters with a combined record of 115-5-1, including a matchup of two undefeated fighters, the 75th such occurrence on the prospect developmental series.

The landmark 200th edition of SHOBOX is promoted by GH3 Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions.

In the main event from Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, N.Y., undefeated middleweight prospect Antoine Douglas (14-0, 9 KOs), of Washington, D.C., will take a big step-up in opposition when he faces once-beaten, former world title challenger Michel Soro (23-1, 13 KOs), of France by way of Ivory Coast, in a 10-round bout.

The co-feature showcases a matchup of undefeated-yet-untested prospects, each taking an important step. Hard-hitting super middleweight prospect Jerry Odom (11-0, 10 KOs), of Washington, D.C., will take on Cuban amateur standout Vilier Quinonez (8-0, 5 KOs), of Miami by way of Cuba, in an eight-round match.

In another eight rounder undefeated welterweight Cecil McCalla (18-0, 6 KOs), of Randallstown, Md., will face Oscar Godoy (13-2, 6 KOs), of Watsonville, Calif., and in the opening bout of the telecast, unbeaten Wanzell Ellison (11-0, 5 KOs), of Newark, N.J., will square off with Tony Luis (17-2, 7 KOs), of Ontario, Canada, in an eight-round lightweight bout.

Antoine Douglas will make his second appearance of 2014 on ShoBox, where he scored an impressive unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Marquis Davis this past Jan. 17. A highly regarded prospect and former amateur champion, Douglas and his sister, Tyrieshia, were the only brother-sister duo to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials.

The 21-year-old Douglas is coming off two consecutive knockout wins inside of two rounds, the latest a second round TKO of veteran, former world title challenger Luca Messi. Douglas, who has been pushed to the eighth round just once in his career and will be fighting in his second scheduled 10-rounder, will take on his toughest challenge to date in Soro.

The only blemish on Michel Soro’s record was a unanimous decision loss in the hometown of Ukrainian junior middleweight world champion Zaurbek Baysangurov in 2012. Since the defeat, the Frenchman has produced five wins in a row back home in France and is coming off a fifth- round TKO of Alexey Ribchev.

Soro is experienced in distance fights, having gone 12 rounds three times and 10 rounds twice. But the 26-year-old will be making his U.S. debut and fighting at a catch-weight of 157 pounds after campaigning for most of his career at 154.

The Jerry Odom-Vilier Quinonez matchup features two undefeated fighters, both with solid amateur pedigree, facing off at similar points in their professional careers, the quintessential ShoBox matchup.

The heavy-handed, 21-year-old Odom was undefeated entering his last bout in April when he won a four-round unanimous decision over Edgar Perez. Highly regarded yet inexperienced, Odom will be fighting in his first eight-round fight. He has not been past the fourth and has never been scheduled for more than six rounds.

Like many Cuban boxers, the 29-year-old Quinonez got a late start as a professional and didn’t turn pro until 2010 at the age of 25. He has campaigned in Florida for most of his career and is coming off a first-round TKO of Edgar Perez, who happens to be the only fighter that pushed Odom to the distance.

Quinonez is guided by veteran trainer Orlando Cuellar, trainer of former world champion Glen Johnson, who may need to focus on his pupil’s conditioning for this scheduled eight rounder. Quinonez has never been past the fourth round and has only been scheduled for six rounds once.

The 29-year-old McCalla was an accomplished amateur with 150 fights, but he’s faced mostly inferior opposition as a professional. McCallla is one fight removed from a career-best win over durable veteran Eric Mitchell and is coming off a six-round unanimous decision win over the outmatched Antonio Chaves Fernandez.

McCalla, who has never been past the sixth round, will be fighting in his third scheduled eight-round match, while Godoy has an eight-round split-decision victory on his record.

Godoy, 24, has won nine fights in a row since his last loss and is just two fights removed from a career-best second-round knockout over of battle-tested veteran Rogelio Castaneda Jr., who has faced the likes of Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson and Demetrius Hopkins. The Santa Cruz-area boxer is coming off a majority decision over Victor Fonseca on March 14.

The 25-year-old Ellison is unbeaten yet untested as a professional. He had 90 amateur fights and appeared in the National Golden Gloves twice, but he has fought mostly limited opposition since turning pro in 2009. He is coming off a split-decision win against previously unbeaten Iain Weaver on April 4, but prior to that he defeated four fighters with losing records.

The Canadian Luis, 26, has faced decidedly tougher opposition as a pro. He is coming off an extremely hard-fought 10-round unanimous decision loss to undefeated prospect Ivan Redkach this past Jan. 17 on ShoBox in which he was knocked down in the first round and suffered a cut on his forehead in the sixth from an accidental headbutt. Luis is also more experienced, having boxed more than double the amount of rounds than Ellison (92-45).

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

BUGLIONI OUT TO SHOW HE’S LEARNT FROM KHOMITSKY SETBACK AS HE TAKES ON COUZENS LIVE TONIGHT ON BOXNATION

LONDON (16 July) – Rising star Frank Buglioni insists he has learnt from his shock defeat to Sergey Khomitsky as he looks to bounce back in style tonight.

The highly touted super-middleweight ace takes on the sturdy Sam Couzens at The York Hall in Bethnal Green with the aim of getting back to winning ways following his unscripted sixth round stoppage to Khomitsky last April.

However, the former WBO European champion is adamant that the setback will only make him a better fighter in the long run as he looks to push forward in his career, having racked up 12 straight wins prior to his first defeat to Khomitsky.

“Long term, this will have done me the world of good. I learnt big time from it and found out what still needs addressing to elevate me to the next level,” said Buglioni.

“For a start, it’s completely changed my mind set. I had two choices. I could bury my head in the sand and feel sorry for myself or comeback bigger, stronger, more powerful. I was back training at the gym just two or three days later.

“I was soon back running six miles a day and running far faster than before. I’ve been training exceptionally hard and my body has reacted well to that.

“Trust me, the Khomitsky fight has made me more confident. I now know I can take a hard shot. I learnt that, when clipped, I need to hold not fire back,” he said.

The 25-year-old has watched the fight back and knows where he made mistakes, believing he should have put his foot on the accelerator earlier into the fight and not worried so much about what his opponent had in his armoury.

“I got my tactics terribly wrong,” said Buglioni. “I should’ve ‘put it on him’ a lot earlier. In the build up, we knew my defence needed working on but it got to a stage in the fight where, because of that, I was neglecting my own strengths; coming forwards, being aggressive, throwing my own hard shots whilst maintaining a calm head.

“I became pre-occupied with getting the defensive side right, to the detriment of imposing my natural game,” he said.

Before the loss, Buglioni was often avoided by domestic rivals in the 168-pound division.

Now, though, after seeing a supposed chink in his armour, the possibilities have opened up for some exciting challenges in the near future.

“Domestic rivals who had previously been ducking me prior to the Khomitsky fight, guys like Lee Markham and Kelvin Young, are suddenly getting confident and starting to show a bit of interest, calling me out,” said Buglioni.

“Guys like Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding probably feel a bit more confident about meeting me now. They’re fights I’d still jump at with both hands, sooner rather than later,” he said.

The Londoner must first, however, come through the impending challenge of Titchfield’s Couzens when they battle for the Southern Area title live tonight on BoxNation.

The ‘Wise Guy’ is not overlooking Couzens as he looks to end 2014 on a high.

“He’s tall and a tough, strong boy but I think it’ll only be a matter of time. If he tries to box me at range, it’ll be a very short night’s work. If he comes in close and attempts to smother and spoil, he might last a little bit longer but it’ll be far more painful for him,” said Buglioni.

“I just want to shake off the rust and send out a message that Frank Buglioni is back,” he added.

The night’s action also sees unbeaten rivals Mitchell Smith and Peter Cope battle for the vacant super-featherweight English title, plus Bradley Skeete takes on Steven Pearce.

Buglioni vs Couzens is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) tonight from 7pm. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Price sidelined with hand injury, will return in December

Yesterday former British and Commonwealth Champion David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) underwent surgery to repair a damaged tendon in his right hand. The operation, performed by renowned hand specialist Mike Hayton, was a success and the 6ft 8’’ heavyweight is expected to make his ring return in December.

‘’I picked up a hand injury in my last fight against Zavorotnyi,’’ said Price. ‘’It had been four weeks and there had been no real improvement so I went to see Mike Hayton and we decided to open it up and see what the problem was.

‘’There was a split in the tendon and some scar tissue that had to be removed. It is still a little sore now but Mike was pleased with how it went and he is confident that my hand will be back to full strength in no time.

‘’Realistically we will be looking at December before I am able to get back in the ring. I am going to stay in the gym. There is still a lot of work I can do. I will just need to avoid any impact training for the time being.

‘’I am glad I have got this sorted now. There was the option to take a fight in September, get an injection and fight through the injury but then you run the risk of making it worse or causing some permanent damage.

‘’There is no doubt that I will benefit from the additional time in the gym and come back even stronger. It is a minor setback but by the end of the year I will have boxed four times in 2014 and that is a massive step in the right direction. Next year I will be ready to take on anyone!’’

Zou Shiming Talks About His 10-Round Debut on Saturday on HBO2

Shiming_Valenzuela_130406_001a
MACAO, CHINA (July 16, 2014) – Just 15 months and five fights removed from his professional debut, two-time Chinese Olympic gold medallist and national icon ZOU SHIMING (4-0, 1 KO),of Guizhu, China, will step up and fight in his first 10-round bout, facing off against hard-punching veteran and three-time world title challenger LUIS “Chino” DE LA ROSA, (23-3-1, 13 KOs), of Barranquillla, Colombia. Zou, trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, and De La Rosa will headline Champions of Gold, the all-action championship boxing event This Saturday! July 19, at The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena. Fighting for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) International flyweight title, the battle between Top-10 contenders (Zou and De La Rosa are world-rated No. 6 by the World Boxing Association and No. 10 by the International Boxing Federation, respectively) will be televised via same-day delay on HBO2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET/PT. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, All Star Boxing, Caribe Promotions and Foreman Boys Promotions, the telecast will open with undefeated super middleweight contender GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ, world-rated in the Top-Five by all four major sanctioning organizations, defending his NABF/NABO super middleweight titles against “The One” JUNIOR TALIPEAU, who returns to the ring following a career-best victory.

ZOU SHIMING
“I am pleased with my progress as a professional fighter but I want to show more of what Freddie Roach has been teaching me. Freddie has been a great teacher and an even better friend and mentor. I’m finally comfortable with the pro style of fighting.

“It may be unusual to move this fast to a 10-round fight but I have confidence in my team and if they think I’m ready, then I will be ready.

“I am not nervous about facing a vastly-more experienced fighter like De La Rosa. I’m very excited about the opportunity. He is the type of fighter I need to beat to earn a world title shot.

“I do feel the pressure of my fans in China to meet their expectations. But my amateur experience, including three Olympics and two World Championships, has prepared me for that pressure. I feel that my style and power are improving and that has bolstered my confidence.”

LUIS DE LA ROSA
“I’m going to be facing a fighter with a great amateur background. But I’m a professional fighter with a lot of experience, and I’m here to win. Zou Shiming is a great fighter, but I’m really experienced at a professional level.

“When I was told about this fight, I immediately took it. I didn’t have to think twice. I have been training for four months.

“I’m ready to take home the victory. Zou Shiming should fear me, because on July 19, in front of all his fans at The Venetian Macao, I’m going make it a nightmare for him.”

FREDDIE ROACH
“Shiming has come a long way in a very short time. I have seen quite a few amateurs take up to four years to learn the pro style. Shiming has done it in 15 months. He is getting the pro style of fighting down a lot quicker than previous Olympians I’ve worked with. The big difference is now he knows he must increase his lead as opposed to protecting a lead, which is what he was taught as an amateur.

“De La Rosa is the best opponent Shiming has faced as a professional. I am confident that Shiming is ready and prepared to go 10 rounds.

“The key for Shiming is to hurt De La Rosa early and set a fast pace for the fight after that. Shiming’s power has really developed. He has discovered power he never knew he had. His jab sets up an overhand right that is killer. He is sitting down on his punches. His combinations are outstanding. When he lands his power punches with 112 pounds behind them, Shiming will make his point to De La Rosa that he belongs.”

Remaining tickets for Champions of Gold can be purchased via Cotai Ticketing™. Prices start at HKD/MOP 80, with ferry and hotel packages also available.

Zou is one of China’s most revered athletes and has single handily revived professional boxing’s popularity in his native country. Trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, Zou won his professional debut, on April 6, 2013, via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzuela. He followed that up with six-round unanimous decision victories last year over Jesus Ortega and Juan Toscano on July 27 and November 24, respectively, and celebrated his 2014 debut with his first professional knockout February 22, stopping Yokthong Kokietgym in the seventh round. All of his professional bouts have taken place at the Cotai Arena. An Olympic legend, Zou was the world’s greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation’s first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. A victory for Zou, currently world-rated No. 6 by the WBA, could place him one giant step closer to a world title challenge this year.

De La Rosa brings two-fisted punching power and an aggressive fighting style into the ring. A three-time interim world championship challenger and a former Colombian champion, four of De La Rosa’s last six victories have come by way of knockout, including his last fight, a second-round knockout of Deivis Marvaez. De La Rosa is currently world-rated No. 10 by the IBF.

Ramirez (28-0, 22 KOs), of Mazatlan, Mexico, is world-rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), No. 3 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the WBA and, No. 4 by the IBF. A sensational young contender, Ramirez, 23, has won both his 2014 bouts by knockout. In his last outing, on April 11, he captured the NABF and NABO super middleweight titles via a fifth-round knockout of two-time world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo.

Talipeau (20-2-1, 7 KOs), a New Zealand native who fights out of Kogarah, New South Wales, Australia, was a former Australian middleweight champion who successfully defended the title five times during his two-year reign before moving up to the super middleweight division. Boasting a victory over two-time world title challenger Shannan Taylor, Talipeau enters this fight having won two of his last three fights by way of knockout. His most recent victory was a 12-round unanimous decision over Walter Crucce for the WBA Latin American super middleweight title. He is currently world-rated No. 14 by the WBA.

BRYANT JENNINGS — MIKE PEREZ INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Bryant Jennings
· B. Bahrmasel Thank you very much for joining us. Today is the International Media Conference Call for the WBC heavyweight Eliminator between Bryant “Bye Bye” Jennings and Mike “The Rebel” Perez. The fight will take place on Saturday, July 26 at Madison Square Garden. Joining us on the call today will be Tom Loeffler from K2 Promotions, Gary Shaw from Gary Shaw Productions, Mike Perez, Bryant Jennings, Adam Booth and Fred Jenkins. Adam Booth is a trainer for Mike Perez. Fred Jenkins is the trainer for Bryant Jennings. At this point I will turn the call over to Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions.

· T. Loeffler Thank you, Bernie. We’re really excited about this show. The main event is a terrific middleweight championship fight between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale, and as the co-feature we have this heavyweight eliminator between two undefeated heavyweights. The only main event that this fight would be a co-feature for is one of this magnitude between Golovkin and Geale. This is really its own main event being for the eliminator and having two undefeated heavyweights fighting each other.

We’re excited to go into the big arena, and Madison Square Garden tickets are priced very reasonably. We’ve had a great response for the show, and we’re really excited about coming back to HBO on July 26. With that being said, I’d like to introduce the trainer for Mike Perez. Their training camp is over in the U.K. He’s had quite a bit of experience with heavyweight champions himself. I’d like to introduce Adam Booth.

· A. Booth Good afternoon, everyone. I’d just like to say that when you look at some of the fights that have taken place recently in the heavyweight division for the championship and then you look at this matchup between Mike and Bryant, I’m confident when I say that this fight is probably a lot better quality and better grade than some of the world heavyweight championship fights that we’ve all seen recently. It’s a great match up and I’m just excited to be involved in such a great fight.

· T. Loeffler Thanks, Adam. With that, I’d like to introduce number three rated in the WBC, Mike “The Rebel” Perez, undefeated heavyweight. This will be his third appearance on HBO, a second appearance in New York at Madison Square Garden. Is Mike there with you, Adam?

· M. Perez Yeah, good afternoon, everyone. I’d like to say that I just can’t wait for this fight. I think it’s going to be a very, very, very good fight so I can’t wait to come July 26 and do what I do, you know.

· T. Loeffler That’s great. Bernie, are we going to open it up for questions now?

· B. Bahrmasel Yeah, for those of you who have questions to be asked, the first portion of the call will be for Team Perez. The second will be for Team Jennings. Bricelda, go ahead and give the instructions one more time to the media please.

· Moderator Thank you. If you would like to ask a question or have a comment, please press *1 on your telephone keypad. This will place your question in the order it was received. Once again, if you would like to ask a question, please press *1 on your telephone keypad now.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Our first call will come from Karl Freitag from Fight News. Go ahead, Carl.
·
· Karl Freitag: I’d like to ask going into this fight against another undefeated fighter again if there’s still any remnants of any of the previous fight you had against Mago?
·
· M. Perez

I’m just concentrating on this fight. This is the fight that’s going to change my life, this one moment that I’m working for. What happened with the last fight, it happened last fight. I appreciate it if nobody asks any questions because I don’t want to talk about that. Mago’s doing good and I’ve been asking about him. That’s in the past. I just concentrate on the fight with Jennings and this is what I worry about, to go out and do my thing, and that’s it. So if everyone dialed in listens to this, please I don’t want to talk about Magomed fight. That happened and that’s it.
I’m just

· Karl Frietag Fair enough, thank you.

· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Mike. Thanks very much for the question, Karl. Our next question comes from Keith Idec from The Record New Jersey. Go ahead, Keith.

· K. Idec Mike, I was just wondering how you think Bryant Jennings compares to some of the other fighters you’ve fought in terms of his ability level and what other maybe different challenges he presents to you?
·
· M. Perez That’s a good question, he’s got a good record. Everybody can see that. Just come July 26 we’ll have to see who’s the best on July 26. The best man’s going to win.
·
· K. Idec What did you learn, Mike, from your last fight back in January? What did you learn from that?

· M. Perez Everything, like my coach can explain to you how much I learned. I learned that this is a serious sport. A little bit, a slip, that can put you down forever, you know?
·
· K. Idec Do you feel that you went into the last fight over confident? What do you mean by it’s a serious sport? Can you elaborate on that?
·
· M. Perez I don’t think there was enough time to fight. I just fight like 80 days, 70 days. I just fight in November and then I fight in January again. So this is what I think of that. I think that I mentally was not ready for that.
·
· K. Idec You fought too soon in other words after your previous fight right?
·
· M. Perez Yes, that’s what I think, yes.
·
· Tom Loeffler Keith, if I could jump in on that. It really was—the fight before that was really a tough physical fight for both fighters. I agree with Mike. In hindsight, it was probably too quick to bring him back. I was anxious to put him back on HBO as quickly as possible, and it seemed prior to the fight everything was fine but you could see probably in the performance was a little bit slack. Now that he has had some time off and he’s worked with Adam for a number of months now, I think you’ll see a different Mike Perez coming in July 26th.
·
· K. Idec Mike, how do you feel physically after your injury
·
· M. Perez Yeah, yeah, yeah, thank God I feel better, you know. There will be no problem there so it’s 100%.
·
· K. Idec Thank you, guys.
·
· A. Booth Thanks, Keith.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Keith. We appreciate the call.

· T. Loeffler Why don’t we do this, Bernie? Why don’t we let Gary introduce Fred and Bryant, and then we can just open up at the end of the call for any questions for either fighter. Go ahead, Bryant, Gary.
·
· G. Shaw This is Gary Shaw. I’d like to thank all the reporters that are on the call for getting on the call, thank HBO for broadcasting this great fight of two undefeated heavyweights. I wanted to introduce Fred Jenkins, the trainer of Bryant Jennings, a very highly underrated trainer who’s been training for years and years in Philadelphia. Fred, do you have anything to say?
·
· F. Jenkins Yeah, I just want to say thank you for this opportunity, long-awaited opportunity for Bryant Jennings. After this fight, they really do recognize as the number one heavyweight in the world.
·
· G. Shaw A ll right, thank you very much, Fred. There’s not much to say about Bryant. He can surely speak for himself, as any of you that have interviewed him know. I do want to say just a couple of things. A.) He’s a tremendous family man. B.) He has tremendous character. C.) He knows where he came from, knows where he wants to go and he’s probably the best athlete that I’ve ever represented in boxing. He’s a true athlete, and I think on July 26th that will show the difference between Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez and we have a great deal of respect for Mike Perez. He’s a great fighter and we understand that. We’ve seen his fights and we know the damage that he can do.
·
· I’d like to introduce Bryant Jennings. Before Bryant gets on, I just want to remind everybody that the premiere of “Road to Golovkin/Geale” is on HBO and will include a preview of the matchup between Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez with intense training and revealing interviews of both fighters. At this time I’d like to introduce who I believe will be the next heavyweight champion of the world, Bryant Jennings.
·
· B. Jennings Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Yeah, I’d just like to thank everybody that has anything to do with this July 26 fight, for the opportunity for putting me up front once again. I believe that I’m definitely going to work my hardest. I believe my confidence is 100%, and just come July 26 we’re definitely going to see. Thank HBO, thanks K2 Promotions; thank Gary Shaw Promotions, Antonio Leonard Promotions and everybody else in affiliation with this show. I’m glad to be here and let’s get with the questions.
·
· T. Loeffler Thanks, Bryant. You can open it up, Bernie.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Our next call comes from John DeSanto from Philly Boxing History.
·
· J. DeSanto Okay, hi, Bryant. It’s good to talk to you. You had, in the last year or so, you’ve had, and you’ve been up in the top of the rankings and heading towards the number one spot with a win in this fight. Prior to this you had sort of whirlwind career with a lot of activity. I know you’re always in the gym, but how are you feeling physically and as you approach this fight with not fighting as often as you’ve been used to in the prior two years?
·
· B. Jennings Staying physically fit is not an easy task period. I guess you can ask a great percentage of America or a great percentage of the world. That’s not an easy task to do so I won’t sit here and say it’s easy though I’m a natural athlete and it’s in my blood and it’s in my genetics to just look and stay fit. Over the times, the couple layoffs that I had, I’m strong mentally. It takes a lot of mental strength to get over layoffs and long spots in your career. I just stay mentally focused and that’s what keeps me together, being mentally focused.
·
· J. DeSanto Just one follow up, do you think, being someone who’s watched you fight all along, it seems that that is, of all of your abilities, that’s like all your strength. That’s maybe your greatest strength, your conditioning and your mental strength. Do you think that distinguishes you from your opponent this time, as well as the other guys out there in the division?
·
· B. Jennings Yeah, pretty much, because us as fighters, we go through a lot. We go through a lot, and I honestly think eight weeks is too long of a time to be preparing for a fight because it’s kind of like let’s hurry up and get this thing over with but we have a lot of time, eight weeks, and for this fight it actually was about 16 weeks because of the schedule. It was cancelled; then it was rescheduled. So this is a definite mental test, definitely for the both of us, and I think that your mentality will definitely play a big part in it because it’s been very tough going all of these weeks. We maybe had two or three weeks in between, but we went a whole lot of weeks and we worked out hard. We nearly killed ourselves. We make sure that we’re fully prepared for this fight, and being mental is definitely going to play a big part in this situation.
·
· J. DeSanto And this is the first time, for this fight, the first time it was scheduled and now for the first time you went away for camp. How was that and how did that affect your training this time? How was that an advantage?
·
· B. Jennings Well, it affected me greatly because it’s a lot of—I’m like the head of the family. I’m like the head of the neighborhood. This is something that I’ve been before I started boxing so I’m very accessible. I just got a lot of people that’s rooting for me. I got a lot of people that want to stop by. I’m not going to say hold me up or anything, but a lot of people are seeking my attention and being away is just a way that I can just fully focus and be away from everything and put 100% into boxing.
·
· J. DeSanto Great, okay, thank you, looking forward to the fight.
·

· B. Bahrmasel Great. We’re going to try and go back to Dan Rafael from ESPN. Dan, can you go ahead please?
·
· D. Rafael Hello.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Dan, go ahead please.
·
· D. Rafael Thank you, Bernie. Hey, Bryant, good to talk to you today.
·
· B. Jennings Hey, what’s going on, Dan?
·
· D. Rafael Bryant, my question for you is when you take a look and you see the way that Mike has looked in his last couple of fights, you have the fight with Mago where it was obviously a very physical, grueling fight. He was all over him, hard punching, never let up for ten rounds. Obviously we know what happened in that fight, and then in his next fight against Takam not quite the same as far as the ferocity, maybe not as good of a performance and it was a draw. I think Mike would admit it was not his best night. I’m wondering, when you look at those is your mentality that he’s as good as he was the night he fought Mago or maybe not as good as the night he fought Takam or is he kind of somewhere in between? How do you assess where Mike Perez is in his career?
·
· B. Jennings Well, my assessment on Mike Perez and he career right now is pretty much my assessment on the way I see things as being a boxer myself and those were two different nights, two different bodies and you just can’t really pinpoint what the problem was even though it seemed to be a problem but you got to start comparing. Now you would compare Carlos Takam to Magomed. So it’s just like okay, those were two different types of fighters, two different nights. I don’t know, maybe Mike ate something that night or that morning that had him affected, but you can’t look at that and just say oh, he’s on the down slope and underestimate him and his ability and come into the fight unprepared thinking that he’s going to look like he did in his last fight.
·
· D. Rafael Okay, my other question for you, Bryant, is so this fight between you and Mike is to get to the number one spot in one of the organizations where the winner is going to get a mandatory title fight so I know there’s a lot on the line for both of you guys. It’s probably something you’ve all dreamed about since you started boxing. You want to fight for the heavyweight title so you got to win the fight, but on the other side of it the guy who wins the fight is going to probably have a long way to get that title fight because the title fight ahead of you is Stiverne and Wilder and that fight is not even scheduled yet so it could be a number of months before you’re actually in the ring against the winner of the other fight. Is that difficult to think about at all or do you not even look ahead to the title fight even though that’s the motivation presumably for this bout?
·
· B. Jennings Well, I’m not even looking at that. Knowing that this boxing game nowadays anything could happen, and I’m almost certain that something—I just have it in the back of my head that anything could happen and I’m not going to say what I was thinking would happen because I really don’t know what I would think, but like I said, anything could happen. They could come up with something and say well, we’ve got to squeeze this person in or you’ve got to fight this person first before you do that so I’ve just literally focused on this fight. This fight here is the fight to win in order to even think about the long wait or any other thing and that Wilder and Stiverne fight.
·
· D. Rafael Okay, when you were getting ready to fight Mike the first time, before the fight was postponed or I guess at that time it was canceled and we weren’t really certain if or when it would be rescheduled—I’m wondering how difficult was it to go through the period where the fight was off, you were probably presumably very close to being ready for the fight, to not have it rescheduled. I guess it was a few weeks maybe a month even before it was formally rescheduled. The uncertainty aspect of when you were waiting to see what was next or did you just stay in shape and be assured that this would be rescheduled? How did you go about that?
·
· B. Jennings That’s where my mental strength kicked in, because like I say, I could’ve broke down. We had used money for training and I was away from my son for two months. It almost seemed like it was for nothing. It definitely was a letdown, but I really didn’t dwell on it because obviously I’m still alive, I’m still here and the cancellation didn’t come at my expense. In other words, I wasn’t the one that was hurt or injured or whatever so it didn’t come at my expense so that’s pressure that I didn’t have to deal with. I was like, hey, it’s life. Learn how to deal with it. I got over it real fast. I stayed in shape and just waited patiently and put faith in my team that they’d come up with something and they came up with something fast.
·
· D. Rafael All right very good. Bernie, is Mike still on the call?
·
· M. Perez Yeah, I’m right here.
·
· D. Rafael Mike, my question for you is your last fight was a draw with Takam. Not the result I know that you wanted so you must’ve been disappointed by the draw. Were you at all surprised that coming off of a draw you would be put into the situation where you have now the opportunity to fight an eliminator to get a title fight? A lot of guys get a draw or a loss, their next fights not in this kind of fight. It’s not at this level.
·
· M. Perez No, this no was a surprise. I believe I won for the best heavyweight out here at the moment. I just have to thank my promoter that is doing a good job and make me keep going.
·
· D. Rafael How disappointed were you with the draw though? At the time that it happened you have to think that you’re not going to be in this big of a fight right away.
·
· M. Perez Yeah, like I said, I have to thank my promoter Tom Loeffler for that. He’s doing a good job and just pushed me to be the best.
·
· D. Rafael Okay, thank you, Mike.
·

· D. Rafael I have a question for either Gary or for Tom to answer. Is there anything written in the contract, being that this is an eliminator and there’s uncertainty between when Wilder and Stiverne fight, is there any language in the contract saying when the winner will get a title shot?
·
· G. Shaw No.
·
· D. Rafael Okay, so they should win this fight and kind of hope and wait for the best?
·
· G. Shaw Look, the only fight that counts right now is this fight, and anybody looking past this fight is a foolish person and that goes for the promoters and the fighters and the trainers. They need to win this fight obviously. After this fight, the winner will then have the opportunity to worry about what’s next, whether it’s the winner of Stiverne and Wilder or one of them pulls out with an injury, whether it be real or fake. There’s a lot going on, but nothing counts other than July 26.

D. Rafael Thanks very much.

· B. Bahrmasel Tom, did you want to speak something on that as well?
·
· T. Loeffler It’s a testament to both fighters, as far as what they’re risking in this fight. Even though Gary and I disagree on who’s going to win the fight, we both agree that we believe the winner of this fight will become the heavyweight champion. It’s really one of these, and Adam has spoken to it before, it’s probably one of the best match ups that we’ve seen in the heavyweight division for a long time where you have two guys risking their undefeated records on the big stage at Madison Square Garden and with the history of the Garden. That’s what makes this such a compelling co-feature fight. It’s really one of those that you look at as a 50/50 fight. It really depends on who comes in the ring that night as the better person and who leaves as the number one contender.
·
· To go back to Dan’s question as far as Mike going into this type of a fight with a draw, he didn’t lose his rating. He was rated number five and Bryant Jennings was rated number four. They were the two highest rated contenders and that’s how the WBC mandated this second title eliminator so there’s a lot on the line in this fight and a lot for the winner of the fight.
·
· D. Rafael Thanks, Tom. I appreciate it. Gary, thank you for the answer and best of luck to both fighters.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Our next call comes from Lem Satterfield from RingTV.com. Go ahead, Lem.
·
· L. Satterfield Hey, how you doing? Thanks. I have one question, two questions for Mike Perez and then one for Bryant. Mike, how is the shoulder and how was it training with the injured shoulder to get, to recover from it?
·
· M. Perez The truth is 100%. I can’t wait to fight.
·
· L. Satterfield Okay. Is Adam there?
·
· A. Booth I’m here, yes.
·
· L. Satterfield Adam, can you tell me, piggybacking on an earlier question, how is Bryant Jennings style and his ability to move? He kind of boxes and really exhibits some lower weight skills. How is he different preparing for than say Mike’s last two fights?
·
· A. Booth Well, I wasn’t involved with working with Mike for his last two fights so I can’t really make that comparison. All I can do is make Mike the best he can be and then obviously work a strategy for the opponent he’s fighting. Now Bryant Jennings is a good athlete. He can see he’s a rounded athlete.
·
· I would imagine he’s very capable at lots of different things and he carries that type of athletic ability into the boxing ring. He has a very good concentration and very immaculate discipline as well. He sticks to what he’s doing in a fight and if what he’s doing is working he doesn’t get reckless. He doesn’t get greedy. He keeps doing what works for him, and that shows that he’s obviously got a fantastic coach and a good relationship with his coach and he has the discipline to do what he has to do in a boxing ring.
·
· My job is to look at what he does and what he doesn’t do and then we work with Mike and the incredible skills that Mike has and the phenomenal pedigree he has as a world-class amateur and all of the different styles that he’s seen. We’re working on a number of different things. We’re not just working on Bryant Jennings’ moving around because Bryant will also put his hands up and try and come up close and try and smother close. We know that he’ll use his jab.
·
· And Mike will be ready for anything that takes place in that ring because he has the experience of seeing everything and I think this time around he has a new experience of actually being in fantastic condition, that he’s actually trained like a world-class fighter and a world-class athlete and he’s been a joy to work with. I expect Bryant Jennings to have a game plan. I expect him to stick to that game plan, but this is a fight where the small changes that each fighter will have to make during the fight will play out.
·
· L. Satterfield Perfect, perfect, thank you so much. Bryant, you there?
·
· B. Jennings Yeah, I’m here. I’m listening.
·
· L. Satterfield Bryant, obviously it would be—you have to win this fight to get there, but you’re in a position to become the first American heavyweight champion in quite a while. Not only that, you have the Philadelphia legacy in general but in particular that of Joe Frazier. I wonder how much you think about the prospect of being the first American champion from Philadelphia and the legacy that you would be a part of?
·
· B. Jennings I think about it a little bit, but it’s not my priority. My priority pretty much is to get through, is to get through life. As everybody knows, I’ve only been boxing for five years. I didn’t ask to be a boxer. I came in with a mindset and a lifestyle that was fit for boxing, and I knew exactly how hard it was going to take for me to work. I just want to get through. I just want to get through life so therefore I work hard.
·
· I’m very disciplined with life period. Boxing is a lifestyle and I don’t live it just six to eight weeks during training and stuff like that. My light switch is never off. Being from Philly and being the first American heavyweight in a long time, that actually fuels my motivation but my motivation pretty much is just to get through life. We’re always living until we die so my motivation will never die until I die. Just pretty much my priority is just to get through life, get through what I need to accomplish, my goals and all that other stuff, the legacy.
·
· Sometimes they may strip me of something. I just may be—one day I just may be the greatest of something. Somebody may be the greatest of something and they won’t be recognized for it. I just fight. I get in the ring. I do what I’m supposed to do. I live how I’m supposed to live. I eat how I’m supposed to eat. I listen to my trainers. I’m a very respectful person, all around guy, and I’m just doing this for life. This is the craft that God has set in my life for me to do, and I’m a perfectionist so this is what I do to perfect it. All that other stuff, all the titles and everything, all that stuff comes later. I just focus on my craft first.
·
· L. Satterfield Bryant, thanks so much and good luck in the fight.
·
· B. Jennings Thank you.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Lem. Next up is Sean Crose from Boxing Insider. Go ahead, Sean.
·
· S. Crose Hi, how are you, Mr. Jennings?
·
· B. Jennings Hey, how you doing?
·
· S. Crose Good, thanks, got a question for you. I’ve been following you for a while. I remember on NBC Sports you were on quite a bit. You were almost their feature guy, if you weren’t as it was. It showed that you had full-time job. Just a question, you don’t have the full-time job anymore correct? You’re now boxing full time?
·
· B. Jennings I still have a full-time—I still have the full-time job, but I’m not working. I’m on a leave of absence, and I’ll make my decision after this fight. Win, lose or draw, I have my decision in line already. So I guess you all can know what that is, but I’m not working right now but I do plan to go to work after this fight.
·
· S. Crose Okay, thank you very much. My only other question is for Mike Perez. Mr. Perez, are you there?
·
· M. Perez Yeah.
·
· S. Crose How are you? Mike, there was some questions about you—there were some rumors that you didn’t want to fight in Texas, that you needed more time to train and so the injury wasn’t as bad as it was. This isn’t an accusation. I’m just repeating what I’ve read. Do you want to respond to those rumors?
·
· M. Perez Yeah, what do you want to hear? People can talk whatever they want to talk. If I don’t want to fight, I don’t want to fight. I do want to fight. Plus Jennings and his team know that we were trying to make the fight way more before this happened. It’s not accusing. People can think whatever they want to think. Actually I don’t care.
·
· T. Loeffler Right. I can jump in on that question as well. When Mike got injured, Gary will attest to it, there was no guarantee that HBO was going to—there wasn’t any timeframe as far as rescheduling this fight. Mike would never jeopardize a title elimination fight like this because the date was set and we had the venue and everything set in Texas. There was uncertainty after he got injured what would actually happen, how long he’d be out of the ring and if we could get a date on HBO and what the WBC would do as far as sanctioning the fight if the injury was worse. Whatever rumors were out there really were—there was no basis to that, and if you need more, any detailed information on the injury, Adam, I’m sure will be happy to go into detail on that as well.
·
· G. Shaw And those rumors never came from the Jennings side, just to make it clear.
·
· T. Loeffler That’s correct. I think they came from one of the fighters on the under card that was frustrated that his fight got canceled as a result of the entire show being canceled.
·
· S. Crose Okay, that’s good enough for me. I’ll put it down. Thank you for answering the question.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Sean. Our next question comes from George Hanson from FightKings.com. Go ahead, George.
·
· G. Hanson Good afternoon, everyone. First a comment, I applaud both promoters and managers and trainers for making this fight. My question is for the great Freddie Jenkins. Watching the tape of Bryant’s first amateur fight over the weekend and looking at his progression, how were you able to take Bryant from a guy with athletic ability to the fighter he is now because I notice something different every time? There’s another dimension. How have you been able to accomplish that over such a short period of time?
·
· G. Shaw It’s a short period of time for Bryant Jennings, but it’s 43 years for me. That’s how I accomplish that.
·
· G. Hanson And this question is for Bryant. Bryant, at what point did the light go off and you realized that I have the ability to be heavyweight champ? Was it initially or was it at some point or some fight somewhere in your career?
·
· B. Jennings Actually I would tell you what it is. It was in May, five months after I started when I was in the Golden Glove finals. Right there was the point of no return. Maybe one of the dates, he told me, I remember this one day he told me, he said even if you don’t win this you’ve done enough. Can you imagine somebody walking into your gym and five months later you’re in Salt Lake City, Utah in a Golden Glove national, in the finals? It just was like this is it. That light switch was on ever since then. I’m just a hard worker at life. I can go on and on about that. I just tunnel vision, shoot for the stars and I’m focused.
·
· G. Hanson Thank you.
·
· B. Jennings You’re welcome. Thank you.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much for the call, George. Go ahead, Chip Mitchell.
·
· C. Mitchell Okay. Two questions for you Bryant. Physically I can’t say anything about you other than I wish it was me, but mentally—I’m going to piggyback on something one of the other callers asked. You were maintaining a remarkable schedule of working full time, training, being a father on top of other things. Outside of boxing, when you were working full time and doing other things, did you do your training prior to your job and as well as after? How did your typical schedule work out for you?
·
· B. Jennings Some mornings I would train, I would definitely do my runs and stuff before I go to work. Sometimes I would run to work. Being the great fighter and the popular person that I started to become, working at a job you start to get privileges so I was able to run to work and if I was a little late I was able to still shower and do all that. I had a lot of people that helped me along the way and made that a little easier, but I still did the eight hours of work.
·
· I would train when I leave from work. Sometimes my son would meet me at the gym. His mom would bring him or I would have to go pick him up from school. Some mornings I would run and be back home in time, because I live next door to my grandma, so in time to go get my son ready for school, take him to school, then go to work, then right after work go pick him up from school then go straight to the gym and then go back home to eat.
·
· My life has always been crowded, and even right now, even without the job—most people say oh, you’re going to quit your job, you’re going to have a whole lot of—no, I’m a corporation. I’m a business right now. I have to keep it going and that same pace, those same ethics, I keep going without the nine to five. I am my own nine to five now. I’m 24/7. I’ve got to live it, I’ve got to make the money and we’ve got to run the business. You’ve got a business to run so I just focus on balance. I’m a Libra so I like to balance everything up.
·
· C. Mitchell Okay, well outside of being late, you might be the only one on here that actually runs to work. My second question, and you can correct me if I’m wrong on this, something I picked up when I watched you live, instead of maybe what 99.9% of boxers do to their opponents, instead of focusing on your opponent’s head it seemed like, and correct me if I’m wrong, that you were looking directly at the center of your opponent’s chest when you were fighting. I’ve never seen anyone do that. If I’m correct about that, can you explain how that works for you?
·
· B. Jennings You’re absolutely correct. I’ve always—I started out that way. I think I was told—me and my trainer, he has a lot of experience with something’s that—I’m new, and it’s like teaching an old dog new tricks. If you tell a dog to chase its tail, the dog might be used to chasing its tail to the left but you’ve got to train it and tell it I want you to chase it to the right. The dog says listen, it’s the same thing. I’m comfortable with doing it this way and this is how it’s going to be. I’m going to chase my tail whichever way I want to chase it.
·
· I was told once before to look the opponent in the eye, but eyes could be deceiving so I just picked up this thing. I used to play other sports so I would never look the person in the eye because, like I said, the eyes could be deceiving. I will always look at the center of your body and that way I can see which way your feet moving, which way your hands are moving, which way your body’s going to move. I don’t need to look at your eyes. I don’t want to see you and I don’t want you to see me. The only thing I want you to do is focus on my eyes and have you thinking exactly where is this guy looking at and what’s his next move. That plays a good role offensively and defensively.
·
· C. Mitchell Okay, 18:0, who am I to argue. Thank you. Thank you.
·
· B. Jennings You’re welcome.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Chip, thank you very much for your time. Our next call comes from Raymundo Ortiz from Sports World News. Go ahead, Raymundo.
·
· R. Ortiz This is for Bryant. I’m just wondering if there have been any fighters that you have fought in the past like Perez that you feel have prepared you for this big fight, aside from the training and prep you’re already doing?
·
· B. Jennings That’s a good question. Lately I was comparing Mike Perez to a better Andrey Fedosov. When I fought Andrey Fedosov in June of 2013, he had some of the same tactics that I think Mike Perez brings. He brings maybe a little better, a little more flicker, but I definitely will compare him and somewhat of his style or somewhat of his approach, as far as like height and arm length and short punches and things like that, to Andrey Fedosov.
·
· R. Ortiz Thank you.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Raymundo. Our next call comes from Keith McMenamin from Philly Keith. Go ahead, Keith.
·
· K. McMenamin This question’s for Bryant. I just wanted to touch on your experience fighting at Madison Square Garden. Do you expect to have a big turnout? You’re pretty close to home. You have a lot of people coming in to support this fight?
·
· B. Jennings You’re asking do I have a lot of people coming to the fight?
·
· K. McMenamin Yeah.
·
· B. Jennings That’s what I would imagine. As a fighter, I never worry about who’s coming. The only thing I know is that I got to be in that ring regardless if there’s two people in the audience. I’m getting a lot of love and I’m returning the love as well, and come July 26 I’ll give them something to root for. For Philadelphia fans it’s very tough so anybody who travels, what is it 90 miles from Philadelphia to New York City, to go watch somebody and to go root for somebody then because coming from Philadelphia—that’s why we fight so hard, because we have tough fans to please. Any fans that come, I appreciate them. I love them. I love their support and I’m going to keep doing what I need to do and make sure I do it well.
·
· K. McMenamin All right, this one’s a follow up too. This is your second time at the Garden. What was your first experience like and what are your thoughts on Madison Square Garden?
·
· B. Jennings I don’t normally get excited about where I’m fighting because the ring is the ring. You could put in the backyard. You could put it in the middle of a carnival. The ring is the ring. But afterwards, once everything soaks in and you start to celebrate your win or you just look at the affect your fight made on the boxing world and where it was at, it’ll be part of history. But it has to be done before it’s a part of history so I can only be included in history after the fight is over. I don’t have really too may good excitements before. Of course I’m excited that it’s at the Garden, but I can’t let that get in the way of me fighting well and winning that fight, being that priority.
·
· K. McMenamin All right, thank you, I appreciate your time.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks very much, Keith. That’s going to conclude the media question and answer session of our call. Gary, did you want to have your team make some final comments please?
·
· G. Shaw No, I just once again want to thank everybody for their interest in this fight, and I do want to say that in this day and age both fighters, forget their promoters or anybody else, but both fighters should be applauded for willing to put undefeated records up and fight one another. Too often everybody’s looking to duck the fight that they’re not sure if they could win or not, and in this fight both fighters said okay without hesitation. I congratulate both fighters, and I hope the press writes the good things about both of these fighters. Thank you.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thank you, Gary. Fred, did you have any final comments you wanted to make?
·
· F. Jenkins No.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Okay, anything final for you, Bryant?
·
· B. Jennings I’d like to thank everybody for taking out their 51 minutes and 23 seconds out of their day to be on this conference call. I’d like to thank all of the reporters for actually calling in and showing interest in this fight. I’d like to thank America for standing behind me. I know I had the majority of the questions. That’s just an honor for me to be that I’m of interest of somebody. I’ll just fight hard come July 26 and me and Mike Perez are definitely going to put on a good show. Shout out to you, Mike. Shout out to you, Adam. Shout out to you, Tom with K2 Promotions, Bernie, everybody on that end. Let’s make it happen July 26, baby.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Thanks, Bryant. Adam, do you have any final comments on the call?
·
· A. Booth No, just thanks, everyone, for taking the time to do this. It’s a pleasure. Good luck to Bryant, stay healthy and look forward to seeing everyone July 26.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Excellent, thank you. Mike, do you have any final comments you’d like to make to the media?
·
· M. Perez Nothing more. Thank you, everyone, for being here and for all this time, all the media. Thanks to Jennings and his team and we’ll look them there July 26.
·
· B. Bahrmasel Great, thanks very much, Mike. Tom, do you want to make any final comments?
·
· T. Loeffler I’d just like to thank Gary again for his help on both fights with the main event, with Golovkin and Geale. As he had mentioned, the “Road to” show premieres this Saturday, July 12, and it also focuses on this great co-feature fight with Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez. We also have a great under card with some local fighters, including Glen Tapia, Boyd Melson, Julian Rodriguez, who will be on the show. We’re providing a great show of full entertainment and I think it’s fitting that it’s at the big arena, the Garden, and we’re just looking forward to a great show that night.

CHICAGO (July 15, 2014) – The “MAYHEM” that is the Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana cross-country promotional press tour took center stage in Chicago on Tuesday as both fighters resorted to creative tactics to get under their opponent’s skin as they announce their Sept. 13 rematch taking place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Eleven-time world champion Mayweather refused to sit down as Maidana and his trainer, Robert Garcia, took their turn at the podium. Instead, he signed autographs for fans, taunted Garcia and chanted his signature line: “Hard work, dedication.”

Not to be outdone, Maidana and Garcia returned the favor when it was Mayweather’s turn on the dais, jetting off stage to greet a large group of “Chino” fans as they chanted “Ole.”

Tuesday afternoon’s event at Auditorium Theatre was the third stop on the five-city, open-to-the-public promotional tour, which continues Tuesday evening in San Antonio and Thursday in Los Angeles.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and are priced at $1,600, $1,200, $850, $600 and $350, not including applicable service charges and taxes. Tickets are limited to eight (8) per person with a limit of four (4) at the $350 price range. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Tuesday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Eleven-Time, Five-Division World Champion
“Fighting is not all about power. It’s about being smart. I don’t have to change anything. My job is to go out there and do what I am paid to do – that’s be smart and finish first. And I always finish first.

“I’m going to do the same thing I always do. It’s about blood sweat and tears, and nobody does it better than me.

“I’ve had some bumps and bruises, but I always stay on top. His camp needs to make major changes if they want to have a chance.

“My hand got raised so I don’t need to make any adjustments. He needs to make some major changes and probably get a new trainer if he wants to have a chance against me.

“I have to watch this guy in there. He’s dirty.

“If he really feels like he won the first fight then he should bet his purse. He should put his money where his mouth is. But he knows he can’t beat me.

“My legacy and the will to win drives me to keep fighting. All I have to do is keep racking up victories and putting on a show.

“If you want to beat me you have to earn it the hard way.

“Why are we fighting again? Because the fans wanted it. I usually dominate my opponents or knock them out. But this guy won three or four rounds against me, and that never happens.

“It’s obvious he’s doing something right if he is facing me again and he won a few rounds from me. But the referee had a bad night last time. We forgive him but this is going to be a much cleaner fight. Note of those dirty rabbit punches or elbows.

“This is not a street fight; this is not an MMA fight. My health and my career after boxing is what’s important. He has a wife, he has children. I could hit this guy without gloves and he could never talk again. We use gloves to protect ourselves.

“It’s going to be another great showdown because I’m pretty sure he’s going to be ready and I’m always ready. We’re just going to give the fans what they want to see

“My back is always against the ropes no matter how it plays out in the sport of boxing. If I dominate a guy they say he’s over the hill. If I don’t knock a guy out they say he’s slow. I’m not just fighting my opponent, I’m fighting the world – the media, the critics, the haters. But it comes with the territory.

“I’m in this position for a reason so all I can do is go out there and be the best Floyd Mayweather. I just need to dominate, take my time and listen to the instructions that my father gives me.

“Robert Garcia is not the fighter, so he can say whatever he wants to say. It’s up to the fighter to get in there September 13 and show me what he can do.

“This is my era and I just might be on another level.”

MARCOS MAIDANA, Former WBA Welterweight World Champion
“I’m going to have to go for the knockout this time, I have no choice. Floyd’s defense is very good and at times it is hard to hit him. That’s why I want to knock him out.

“First, I’m going to give him a beating and then I’m going to knock him out. It’s going to be hard to get a decision because he connects well and knows how to score points.

“I’m going to make some technical adjustments, work on my distance and always pressure him. Our camp last time was great, but we just need to make minor adjustments to get the win.

“Floyd is trying to get under our skin, but it’s not going to work. We’re going to do our fighting in the ring and this time we’re going to win.

“Floyd is trying to make us lose our cool. He’s trying to make us angry so we break concentration. He does it on purpose because he wants to have the upper hand. But his comments don’t affect me at all.

“Floyd can say whatever he wants about me. He knows that I gave him the toughest fight of his life. The only difference is this time I will knock him out.

“This will be a different fight. He knows what I bring to the table and he knows how I fight. I don’t want to leave any doubt whatsoever. To beat a champion like Floyd you have to knock him out.

“I promise I’m going to put on a great fight and I’m going to shut his mouth. He doesn’t respect anything or anyone. He might have money, but he doesn’t have respect.

“He thinks he intimidates me? Nothing intimidates me. His talk can’t hurt me, his punches can’t hurt me. Come Sept. 13, he’ll be the one that’s hurt.

“One hundred percent the gloves made a difference in the last fight. The gloves I use are fit to my hand and are more comfortable. But the ones that I was forced to wear were not comfortable.

“But the bottom line is, this time I’m going to win with any glove that I wear.

“We only had five weeks of sparring and training camp last time. But in this camp we’ve already been in the gym for a week and we still have eight weeks to go. So we will be 100 percent ready for Sept. 13.

“The rematch was unexpected because I thought Floyd was not going to agree (to fight me). And then, one day out of the blue, I got word Floyd wanted to fight me again. By then I was already thinking I wasn’t going to fight again this year.

“For me, what’s really important here is to come out victorious. I come here to win and I don’t really care about money.

“I think many fighters are obsessed with Mayweather. Everybody wants to fight him because they get the chance to make history if they win. And I want to make history.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Maidana’s Trainer
“If Floyd thinks the last fight was tough, this fight is going to be even tougher.

“I retired 12 years ago, and I heard you talking about me and my fights. I know that you are going to bring up my fight with [Diego] Corrales –I have nothing to be ashamed of. I lost to a warrior. He was a great champion and I lost that fight with honor, not like a [expletive].

“If I fought like a [expletive] and acted like a [expletive] I’d still be undefeated. Floyd fights like a [expletive] and behaves like a [expletive].

“You’ve been bringing up stories about dirty fighting, dirty this, dirty that. Guess what? This fight is going to be rougher for you. You better be ready.

“You are going around telling Chino that you want to place a bet on this fight? Well, let’s do that bet right now. You want to put in conditions? Well, we have our conditions, too. Let’s do a bet where winner takes all. You have a lot of money. Winner takes all.

“It looks to me that you are not that sure that you are going to win. If you were, you would have shaken my hand and agreed to the bet if you were that confident you are going to win.”

Austin Trout to return against Daniel Dawson on ESPN FNF Finale

Austin_Trout
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Super Welterweight titlist Austin Trout will return against Daniel Dawson on August 22 that will serve as the season finale of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

No venue has been set but promoter Dan Goossen said it will take place in Southern California.

“It’s good to be back. I want to get back where I was,” Trout told ESPN.com on Tuesday from his training camp in Houston after finishing a workout. “I was at the top and that’s where I belong. I’ve been motivated to come back but I got even more motivated after watching the fight [between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara] on Saturday night.”

“It was more just a matter of me taking some time off. I needed it,” Trout said of the reason for his extended layoff. “I had one hell of a year in 2013. Canelo started it. It was a great fight, a great experience. It was a close fight, but it was my first loss and I took it hard.

“And then I got married almost right after that [May 26]. The marriage was the best part of my year, but my grandmother died right after the ceremony, and I was very close with my grandmother. It was very tough.”

Trout’s fight with Lara was grueling and he was sent to a hospital afterward for a CT scan and observation.

“I had to go to get checked out. It was a tough fight, but I was fine,” Trout said. “Lara had me frustrated. I couldn’t get my rhythm. I wanted to engage but he only engaged when he wanted to engage. He was tough to fight.”

“Hopefully, it will be the eliminator, but I won’t put too much worry on it,” Trout said. “My motivation is to show that I’m back and that I haven’t gone anywhere. I had a bad year and let’s leave it at that — a bad year.”

“There’s way too much at junior middleweight,” he said. “I don’t have to kill myself to make weight. I feel like I can clean up at 154 pounds. I’m going to work my way back. Besides, I can’t leave 154 without getting my rematches. I just want to work my way back and prove that I’m the best.”

The 36-year-old Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs), who lost a 2010 world title fight by 10th-round knockout to Sergey Dzinziruk, will be fighting for the first time in 11 months.

“To me this is an incredible opportunity to showcase my abilities at an elite level in my sport,” Dawson said. “I am aware of the challenge in Austin Trout and I believe my team and I are ready and focused on our winning game plan.

“I have great confidence entering this contest due to the fact that I was afforded a full training camp, compared to my 10-day preparation against Sergey Dzindziruk in Los Angeles in 2010. I have spent the last four years reinventing myself.”

‘King’ Carlos Molina: I Know I Could Beat Canelo or Lara (Again)

Carlos Molina
Watching Saturday night’s pay-per-view fight between former champions Saul Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, IBF Light Middleweight Champion “King” Carlos Molina had to have felt like he wasn’t invited to his own party.

Alvarez and Lara duked it out this past Saturday (July 12) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with Alvarez winning a close decision over a gun-shy Lara. And while an old-school fighter like Molina appreciates when top contenders don’t make excuses and face each other, what bothers the 31-year-old champion is the way the fight was billed.

“The media kept saying that Canelo and Lara was supposedly between the two best fighters at 154 lbs, like I’m not even there,” said Molina. “They’re trying to overlook me and not give me a chance. And after the way they both looked in there, I know I could beat both those guys. I already beat Lara, not officially, but in the eyes of most people who saw the fight.”

Molina has a strong case. When Molina took on Lara in March of 2011, despite what the scorecards said (the fight was ruled a majority draw with two judges scoring 95-95 and one giving Molina the win with a much more accurate 97-93 tally), Molina handled Lara much more handily than Alvarez.

“Every time you see a fight in your weight class, you try to see how you would fight them and neither guy looked really spectacular. Give me the chance and I’ll do to Canelo what I did to Lara. I’m the true champion in this weight class.”

Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) is currently training hard for his next fight, a defense against former champion Cornelius Bundrage in Cancun, Mexico.

“Training is going great. I’m very focused and everything is good. Eager to get in the ring and show once again I belong at the top of the division.”

UFC BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION AND SACRAMENTO’S OWN TJ DILLASHAW BATTLES RENAN BARAO IN TITLE REMATCH ON AUG. 30

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas – In what will be remembered as one of the sport’s greatest upsets, UFC 173 saw 10-1 underdog TJ Dillashaw end the unprecedented nine-year, 35-fight unbeaten streak of Renan Barao to capture the UFC® bantamweight championship. Now, the two meet again in a highly anticipated rematch when the Ultimate Fighting Championship® returns to Sleep Train Arena in Dillashaw’s hometown of Sacramento on Saturday, Aug. 30.

“TJ Dillashaw shocked the world and ended Renan Barao’s nine-year unbeaten streak by knocking out one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport,” UFC president Dana White said. “He showed everyone why you can never trust the odds! Now, on Aug. 30 in TJ’s hometown of Sacramento, Barao will have his chance to get the belt back! I love this rematch!”

Prior to winning the title, Dillashaw (11-2, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) emerged as a standout from the 14th season of The Ultimate Fighter®, and quickly established himself as a top contender with victories over the likes of Hugo Viana, Mike Easton and Issei Tamura. In his career-defining performance, Dillashaw silenced the oddsmakers by dethroning the then third-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Barao, at UFC 173, to claim the bantamweight title. Now, the newly cemented champion will make his first title defense in Sacramento with plans of starting his own reign as the 135-pound king.

During his tenure as champion, Barao (34-2, 1 NC, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) reigned supreme over the bantamweight division, dominating some of the world’s best, such as perennial contender and former WEC champion Urijah Faber (twice), Michael McDonald, and inaugural WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland. With a nine-year unbeaten streak and a resume unmatched by any in the sport, the Nova Uniao star remains at the top of the world rankings. In an attempt to prove their first meeting was a fluke, “The Baron” returns Aug. 30 to settle the score and reclaim the belt for Brazil.

Other bouts for UFC 177 include:
The Ultimate Fighter® season 13 winner Tony Ferguson (16-3, fighting out of Ventura, Calif.) takes on Sacramento’s own Danny Castillo (17-6) in a lightweight bout.
Middleweight striker Lorenz Larkin (14-3, 1 NC, fighting out of Riverside, Calif.) meets three-time NCAA Division II All-American wrestler Derek Brunson (11-3, fighting out of Wilmington, N.C.).
10th-ranked women’s bantamweight contender Bethe Correia (8-0, fighting out of Natal, Rio Grande Do Norte, Brazil) puts her unbeaten streak on the line as she draws women’s MMA veteran Shayna Baszler (15-8, fighting out of Venice, Calif.), who is making her promotional debut.
Heavyweights Ruan Potts (8-2, fighting out of Boksburg South Africa) and Anthony Hamilton (12-3, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) square off.
Hawaii’s Yancy Medeiros (9-2, 1 NC, fighting out of Honolulu, Hawaii) takes on Ohio native Justin Edwards (9-4, fighting out of Bellefontaine, Ohio) in a lightweight bout.

TOP-RATED WILLIE NELSON HEADLINES UPCOMING ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS TAKES ON DANGEROUS LUIS GRAJEDA

Nelson_Cunnigham_140607_001a
New York, NY / Fallon, NV (7/15/14) – On August 8, DiBella Entertainment and Dynasty Boxing, in association with Rumble Time Promotions, will head to Fallon, NV, to host that week’s edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights/ ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates. Headlining the card will be top-rated junior middleweight contender Willie Nelson (22-1-1, 13KO’s) taking on the hard-hitting and dangerous Mexican Luis Grajeda (17-2-2, 13KO’s) in the 10-round main event.

In the co-feature, fast-rising 18-year-old phenom Norbert Nemesapati (14-0, 13KO’s) will be looking make a splash in his US debut when he faces fellow unbeaten Lennox Allen (17-0-1, 10KO’s) in an eight-round super middleweight matchup.

Opening up the card will be the highly anticipated pro debut of China’s 2008 Olympic Games silver medalist Zhang Zhilei, in a four-round heavyweight special attraction.

ESPN will begin live coverage at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN.

“From top to bottom, this is a terrific event, featuring up-and-coming local talent in exciting fights on the undercard and three intriguing televised bouts on ESPN. Willie is knocking on the door to a world title opportunity and an impressive performance against the hard-punching Grajeda moves him in that direction. The co-feature pits two undefeated boxers in the most important fight of their careers. Norbert is on the fast track to stardom and is looking to make an immediate impact on the super middleweight division in his US debut, but this is the type of opportunity that Lennox has been waiting for, to prove that he is among the best 168lb. fighters in the world. It is a true crossroads bout, with the winner clearly cementing himself as a legitimate player in the 168lb. division. Opening up the card, you have Zhilei, a silver medalist who many believe has the ability to be a future star in the heavyweight division. This is a big event for the people of Fallon and we are excited to be a part of it,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment.

“The Fallon Fights: The Rural Rumble is one of Fallon’s premier special events, drawing visitors from northern Nevada and California,” tourism director Rick Gray said.

“We’ve been working with Lou (DiBella) to get Willie Nelson back on ESPN ever since his spectacular first-round knockout of Michael Medina last season on Friday Night Fights,” said Brian Kweder, ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions. “We’ve had a great track record in cultivating future world champions on Friday Night Fights and we believe Willie will be joining that list in the near future.”

“The live telecast of Fallon Fights by ESPN will show the country what a great event this is. The fights are outdoors, under the stars, and reminiscent of those fights in the early mining camps and the epic battles between Corbett and Fitzsimmons and Johnson versus Jeffries,” Gray said.

“Fallon welcomes ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. We have worked hard to put on a top-notch event that would draw the attention of the network,” Fallon tourism director Rick Gray said.

“The fights are a labor of love. All of the City’s departments worked together to support the production of the event,” Fallon Mayor, Ken Tedford, said.

“On behalf of Dynasty Boxing, we are happy to be working with DiBella Entertainment and ESPN, and extremely grateful for them giving Zhang Zhilei the opportunity to showcase his professional debut on ESPN,” said Dino Duva, President of Dynasty Boxing, promoter of Zhang.

A native of Cleveland, OH, Nelson is one of the most talented and dangerous 154-pounders in the world. Since his lone loss to once-beaten Vincent Arroyo via majority decision on ShoBox in 2011, Nelson has switched trainers, moved up in weight and has never looked better, winning six straight bouts. Having scored sensational victories on both the Showtime and ESPN networks in 2012 and 2013, Nelson scored the biggest win of his career, earning a 10-round unanimous decision in an absolute war with Luciano Cuello on HBO in June 2013. Nelson was set to take on the top-rated and three-time middleweight world title challenger Matthew Macklin on HBO last December, but was forced to pull out after suffering an injury to his elbow while in training. Nelson last fought in June on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez HBO PPV bout at Madison Square Garden, annihilating Darryl Cunningham in just one round. Nelson is on the doorstep to challenging for his first world title and is hungrier than ever to get his shot, but he must first defeat the extremely dangerous Grajeda.

Nicknamed “Slayer”, Grajeda has absolute dynamite in both his hands. The 28-year-old Mexican was a 2005 and 2007 Mexican National Champion as an amateur, as well as a 2007 Pan American Games quarterfinalist before turning pro in 2008. In 2010, Grajeda lost a very competitive and hard-fought eight-round unanimous decision to top-rated world contender Jermell Charlo. Since that defeat, Grajeda has gone 8-1-1 with seven of those wins coming by way of knockout. Grajeda has pure dynamite in his fists and has scored a number of vicious knockouts throughout his career, including an upset victory over longtime perennial contender Hector Camacho Jr. in 2012. The one knock on the highly skilled Nelson is his suspect chin, and the heavy-handed brawling Grajeda will certainly be looking to check Nelson’s beard early and often. With Nelson being the type of fighter to never take a backward step in a fight and always willing to stand toe-to-toe, this matchup will certainly make for can’t-miss TV.

The Hungarian teenage phenom Nemesapati will be looking to show the boxing world that he is a superstar in the making when he takes on his toughest opponent to date in fellow unbeaten super middleweight contender Lennox Allen. The WBC Youth Silver super middleweight champion Nemesapati turned pro in 2012 in his native Hungary, following a very successful kickboxing career. After winning a four-round unanimous decision in his pro debut, Nemesapati has stopped 13 consecutive opponents and is now ready to show the boxing world that he is the real deal when challenges Allen.

The 28-year-old Allen is riding a five-bout winning streak since suffering the lone blemish on his career, an eight-round majority decision draw to dangerous super middleweight Darnell Boone. The southpaw Allen, who holds an impressive victory over middleweight contender Nick Brinson, is looking to prove once and for all that he is one of the most talented 168lb. fighters in the world, and an impressive showing against the highly regarded phenom will certainly put the super middleweight division on notice.

Opening up the card will be the highly anticipated pro debut of 2008 Chinese Olympic Silver medalist Zhang Zhilei in a special attraction four-round heavyweight bout. Zhilei has the size, ability and athleticism to make a major impact on the heavyweight division, and a very bright future is expected for the China-native.

Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at an extremely affordable $27 ringside, and $12 for general admission. Special VIP tables are also available for purchase at $500. The VIP tables accommodate seating for eight guests at ringside and includes a complimentary bucket of beer, executive suite restrooms, cocktail service, dedicated full service bar, food station and a Fallon Fights souvenir for each guest. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling (775) 423-4556 or by visiting the Fallon Convention Center or NAS Fallon MWR. You can also purchase tickets by emailing info@visitfallonnevada.com.

Kovalev-Caparello Conference Call Quotes

Sergey Kovalev
Atlantic City, NJ: Last night the media got a chance to engage in a Q & A with Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 KOs) and Blake “Il Capo” Caparello (19-0-1, 6 KOs), and their respective camps, as they prepare to face-off on August 2 at Revel Casino Hotel for the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. Below are the highlighted quotes from the call:

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva

We are very excited to head into Sergey Kovalev’s fourth fight on HBO. We are thrilled to be working with them again and with Revel Casino Hotel. Tickets are on sale now on through Ticketmaster. Also HBO is going premiere “2 Days: Sergey Kovalev” on the 26th after the Gennady Golovkin fight.

Sergey impresses me because he doesn’t fight each fighter the same way. He finds out what is going to work and changes his plan to adjust to each fighter. It is a joy to watch him develop. There is nothing in the world like his intensity. Three of last four opponents have been unbeaten. An active fighter is a successful fighter and Sergey just wants to fight.

Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev

Thank you to my promoter, Main Events, to my trainer, John David Jackson, and to all my fans. Blake is undefeated. I am taking him serious. Good opponents are getting serious training camp and I know he is. I just get in to box and to win. We are both stepping in the ring to do our job. Blake has an advantage because he is coming to get the title. He is hungry and has nothing to lose. It is my job to keep the title. More pressure on me to defend the title. I don’t know Bernard Hopkins, all I know is my next opponent and his name is Blake Caparello.

Sergey’s Trainer John David Jackson

Luckily for me Sergey Kovalev is a true professional. I don’t have to watch him or babysit him. He trains like he is still the challenger. Blake is a decent puncher and boxer. Sergey understands this. He knows we have break down Blake slowly. He is not overlooking Blake. He trains very, very hard. I just try to prepare him so he can go on to bigger and better things.

You can’t sell Blake short. Nothing is outstanding but he is very good at what he does. Sergey needs to cut the ring off and he has done very well against Southpaws. Once Blake gets hit and feels Kovalev’s power all his game plans are going to go out the window. I don’t think this is going to go 12 rounds. Sergey is very disciplined. He is very professional. This is his job. He takes each fight like he is the challenger. When we first starting working together he could punch but he was a head hunter. Now he understands a body attack will also help him. We coordinate a plan together. He studied Blake so much he is probably sick of looking at him. I love working with him because he allows me to my job. He is a class act to be around.

Sergey and I have never talked about a fight with Bernard Hopkins. We are focused on Blake. It hasn’t been a distraction at all. We aren’t looking past him we are looking right at him. After we get passed him we will look at Bernard Hopkins.

Sergey Kovalev is the biggest puncher in boxing. Anyone can hit hard. We are working on different game plans to deal with Sergey’s power. I won’t know how hard he punches until I get in the ring with him. If we go toe-to-toe and his power is too much we will change the plan. I do have the pop to stop people. When I put my punches together I can really hurt people. I have had a lot of great sparring camps. If an opening appears, I will go for the knockout but I am going to fight to the end.

I get the sense they are looking past me. I am very confident myself. I know I am going to win and I already told Lou to get me a unification fight with Adonis Stevenson after I beat Kovalev. Nothing plays on my mind. I am very mentally tough. Sergey Kovalev has power but I don’t fear him. I wanted to fight Kovalev because he is the best there is in the division. He is the man I want to beat.

On behalf of Blake and Sam I would like to thank Main Events and HBO. When your name is “Krusher” you know you can punch. This is the fight that Blake wanted and Main Events was nice enough to offer this to us so we jumped on it. Sergey Kovalev is going to have his hands full. The only way to beat Sergey Kovalev is stand right in front of him and box. Blake is a true boxer and Kovalev has a real challenge on his hands. Blake fights like a boxer. This is a fight he desperately wanted. When I first signed him he told me that everyone is afraid of Kovalev but he felt he could beat him. Standing in front of Kovalev is dangerous so Blake has to use angles and avoid that “Krusher” blow. Kovalev is going to have his hands full.

There is a great advantage to fighting Kovalev: if you manage to hang in there with him, you are going to earn the respect of fans. There are a lot of guys who are afraid of Kovalev but Blake isn’t. Blake is going to go out there and do his best to win. I expect a great performance whether he wins or loses.

I knew Blake was a natural. His instincts are excellent. He does a lot of things right. This is the fight he always wanted. I lobbied for the fight and told Main Events we wouldn’t price ourselves out of the fight.

THOMAS DULORME EYES BOUT WITH PACQUIAO

Thomas Dulorme
NEW JERSEY (July 15, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions world title contender, Puerto Rican star Thomas Dulorme (21-1, 14 KO’s), is available to face current WBO welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao in November, as it seems that Chris Algieri, current WBO junior welterweight champion, may not fight Pacquiao because of money issues.

“I’m available and willing to fight the best,” said Thomas Dulorme, who currently at 140 pounds is ranked #2 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), #3 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), #4 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and #8 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO). “Manny Pacquiao may still be looking for a opponent in November, and if that’s the case, I’m ready. I was supposed to fight Ruslan Provodnikov but I was rejected by his team, and they instead accepted the Algieri bout. I will keep training hard in Oxnard with my trainer Robert Garcia, who believes in my talent, and we’re hoping for a great opportunity to show the boxing world what I’m made of.”

“Dulorme is well deserving of a Pacquiao fight being that he is highly ranked across the board,” said Gary Shaw. “Pacquiao vs. Dulorme would be a sensational bout that the fans would love to see. I know Dulorme is up for the challenge so we’ll see what we can do to make it happen.”

In his last bout, Dulorme captured the NABF Junior Welterweight title, when defeated former undefeated Californian, Karim Mayfield (18-1-1, 11 KOs), by unanimous decision in a HBO live televised bout on March, 29 2014.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT BROADWAY BOXING COMPLETE CARD ANNOUNCED

dbe_logo
New York, NY (7/15/14) – On Wednesday, July 23, at NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) will return with another edition of its popular and long-running Broadway Boxing series.

Headlining the card will be the much-anticipated return and NYC/DBE debut of former title challenger Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (27-1, 12KO’s), of Ireland, squaring off against Noel Echevarria (11-3, 6KO’s) in an eight-round junior lightweight matchup. Hyland has been out of the ring since losing a highly competitive 12-round decision to then-interim WBA world featherweight champion Javier Fortuna in December 2012, due to promotional problems with his former promoter. Hyland officially joined the DBE roster in May and is now ready to resume his career and showcase his skills in front of NYC’s diehard Irish boxing fan base, as he looks to once again make another run at a world title opportunity.

Also fighting in separate feature bouts on the card will be middleweights Avtandil Khurtsidze (27-2-2, 16KO’s), Ivan Golub (1-0) and the eagerly awaited debut of former amateur phenom Sergey Derevyanchenko.

Khurtsidze has been out of the ring for just over two and half years after having VISA and promotional issues in his adopted home of Ukraine. Now living and training in Los Angeles, Khurtsidze is raring to get back into the ring to get his career back under way. Khurtsidze is currently riding a four-bout winning streak since dropping an extremely close decision to former WBA and WBO interim world middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam. Khurtsidze is set to see action against Canada’s Richard Reittie (11-3-1, 7KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight matchup.

Golub, who made his official professional debut on June 27, by winning a dominant four-round shutout decision over Javon Wright, was an outstanding amateur in his native Ukraine. The 25-year-old was a five-time Ukrainian National Champion and also won bronze medals at the Junior World Championships in 2006 and the World Championships in 2009, amassing a record of 270-32 in the process. Golub has also competed in the World Series of Boxing, going a perfect 5-0. The heavy-handed southpaw is now living and training in Brooklyn, NY, and is expected to become a staple on DBE’s Broadway Boxing series. Golub is set to see action against the always tough and extremely durable Azamat Umarzoda in a six-round middleweight bout.

Upon the signing of the 2008 Olympian Derevyanchenko, promoter Lou DiBella stated, “Sergey is one of the most decorated amateurs in the world and absolutely one of the best middleweight prospects in all of boxing. We feel that in one year’s time, he will be ready to fight on the highest levels in boxing.”

Derevyanchenko had an astounding amateur career, which saw him compile an incredible 390-20 record, as well as represent his native Ukraine at the 2008 Olympics and win a bronze medal at the 2007 Amateur World Championships. Like Golub, Derevyanchenko also fought in the World Series of Boxing, where he posted a 23-1 overall record and was the 2012 WSB Team Champion and 2011 and 2012 WSB Individual Champion. Derevyanchenko’s career is expected to see a meteoric rise and anything less than a world championship would be a disappointment for the 28-year-old middleweight. Derevyanchenko will face off against Cromwell Gordon in a six-round middleweight matchup.

Also seeing action on the card will be DBE’s former NY Golden Gloves champions and Long Island-natives Joe Smith Jr. (15-1, 12KO’s) and Patrick Day (7-0-1, 4KO’s). The promising up-and-coming prospects are both looking to improve to a perfect 3-0 thus far in 2014. Smith is set to square off against Tyrell Hendrix (11-4-1, 4KO’s) in an eight-round light heavyweight matchup, while Day takes on Brad Jackson (15-9-1, 7KO’s) in a six-round junior middleweight bout.

Rounding out the card will be Queens-native Danny Gonzalez (5-0-1, 3KO’s) taking on Ray Velez (3-4-1, 1KO) in a rematch of their absolute war back in February of this year, when the two junior welterweights do battle in what promises to be six action-packed rounds.
Tickets for the event on July 23 are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP Tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside Tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577.

Wilder not a threat to Stiverne Champ plans to teach ‘little kid’ a lesson

LAS VEGAS (July 15, 2014) – Long before World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne (24-1, 21 KOs) knocked out Chris Arreola (35-4) this past May to claim the coveted title belt vacated by retired Vitali Klitschko, Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (31-0, 31 KOs) started talking smack about Stiverne and he hasn’t let up as the impending showdown approaches later this year.

Wilder is the mandatory, No. 1 challenger for Stiverne’s first defense. If the relatively untested fighter from Alabama believes his incessant trash talk, juvenile antics and bizarre behavior is getting to Stiverne, he has another thing coming when they step intoi the ring. In fact, Stiverne admits he’s been amused.

“He’s not going to get under my skin,” Stiverne said. “I think he’s funny. Maybe he should think about doing a comedy act after I beat him? Friends have sent me stuff he’s said and done. It’s funny. He’s like a little kid who needs attention, so he keeps opening his mouth. His trash talking doesn’t bother me at all. I saw some people who brought up what he’s said. What am I supposed to do, hand my title to him? I guess he wants to entertain his fans. If he thinks his tricks are going to bother me, he’s going to be in big trouble.”

Stiverne & Estephan
While Wilder’s chatter hasn’t fazed Stiverne, his manager, Camille Estephan (Eye of the Tiger Management), has already tired of Wilder’s act. “Wilder is a clown,” Estephan remarked. “No respect! What’s he ever done to act like this? Look who he’s fought. Bermane is going to expose him and shut him up for good. His actions are ill advised. Wilder doesn’t realize he’s in for such a rough ride and a very big surprise. We’re happy to fight him, mandatory or not.”

Some have proclaimed Wilder as the next world heavyweight champion, using his perfect professional record as evidence for his coronation. His skeptics, however, believe Wilder’s record has been built up by fighting fraudulent opponents, pointing out he’s never fought anybody as nearly as good as Arreola (Stiverne’s victim in his last two fights), never mind somebody with the rare combination of power and quickness that Stiverne possesses. Meanwhile, “B-Ware” has been basking in the glory of being a world heavyweight champion, proudly noting he is the first Haitian-born fighter to achieve that distinction.

“My life hasn’t really changed too much other than my popularity growing,” Stiverne talked about life after becoming world champion. “My Instagram followers went up from 2,000 to 13,000 from one picture. There hasn’t been one day I haven’t done something in public. I expected change but not like this. People used to look at me and ask if I played in the NFL. I’ve had people tell me they always thought I was a football player until they saw me fight Arreola. Places I used to stand in line to get in, well, I don’t stand in line anymore.

“I try to stay on the down-low. I’m not out clubbing every day, or feel that I have to do something in public. I’m available but, closer to the fight, I’ll shut down everything 4-5 weeks out unless it has to do with the promotion. I don’t think it has fully hit me, yet. It will when I go back to Haiti to meet the President (Michel) Martelly.”

Stiverne is a breath of fresh air in a division dominated by the robotic, impersonal Klitschko brothers for the past decade. Stiverne’s fan-friendly boxing style, coupled with his bubbly personality, make him extremely marketable as long as he keeps winning. Stiverne-Wilder has tremendous implications for the winner in terms of a potential mega-fight with Wladimir Klitschko for a total unification of the heavyweight belts. Stiverene, though, remains fully focused on Wilder.

“I do feel like a fresh face in the heavyweight division,” Stiverne concluded. “I’m bringing excitement back to the heavyweight division like years ago. Wilder’s not a threat but I’m taking him serious. I take all my opponents seriously but I’m going to teach that little kid a lesson. It’s a shame his promoter and manager are putting him in such a big fight like this so early in his career.”

“MAYHEM: MAYWEATHER vs. MAIDANA 2” NEW YORK CITY ANNOUNCEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Floyd Mayweather 2
NEW YORK (July 14, 2014) – Eleven-time world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather and former welterweight titlist Marcos “El Chino” Maidana held an announcement press conference in Times Square on Monday to formally announce their highly anticipated rematch taking place Saturday, Sept. 13 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Monday’s press conference kicked off a five-city, open-to-the-public promotional tour that will see the fighters visit the boxing hotbeds of Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Antonio and Los Angeles.

“I don’t need to change my style. The guy who got the loss needs to change his style,” said Mayweather.

“Although I recognize Mayweather is a great boxer, fighting him was easier than many people think. He has a good defense, but he has flaws and he showed them last May,” said Maidana. “If you want to see a real fight, watch us on September 13. I’m going to win this fight.”

Their first meeting this past May was an epic 12-round welterweight world championship showdown that was arguably the toughest and most exciting fight of Mayweather’s brilliant career. Maidana attacked Mayweather with ferocity and fearlessness, landing more punches on the pound-for-pound champ than anyone he has faced in his undefeated career.

Tickets for the live event go on sale tomorrow/Tuesday, July 15 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT and are priced at $1,600, $1,200, $850, $600 and $350, not including applicable service charges and taxes. Tickets are limited to eight (8) per person with a limit of four (4) at the $350 price range. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Monday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Eleven-Time, Five-Division World Champion
“My job is to win. Everyone remembers a winner. That’s my legacy.

“I don’t need to change my style. The guy who got the loss needs to change his style.

“Marcos Maidana came out and gave a tough effort, I mean he fought his heart out but it wasn’t clean.

“Was I ever hurt? Sure, the shots to the back of the head hurt. Whenever you’re in a heated battle you are going to be sore. It comes with the territory.

“Is Maidana a better fighter than Canelo? No. Cotto? No. He’s just a dirtier fighter. I didn’t get a deep gash from a punch; I got it from a head butt.”

“Cotto is a solid competitor but we saw what happened to him against Floyd Mayweather. When he fought me, they said he was washed up. Then, he fights again and wins, and apparently, he has been resurrected. Same with Marquez.

“There’s always testing. I’m the face of boxing and I want to clean the sport up.

“First they [Team Maidana] want to use gloves with no padding, and then they want to use knees, elbows and everything else. My back is always against the wall with Team Maidana.

MARCOS MAIDANA, Former WBA Welterweight World Champion
“Without a doubt we are going to prove who won the first fight with this fight; with this rematch.

“I fight dirty? He’s the king of the elbows.

“The rematch is a big deal in Argentina. The entire country watched the first fight. There’s going to be no exceptions in this one. Everybody is going to watch.

“Robert Garcia is very important presence in my career. I feel very comfortable training with him. I’ve been working with him since I faced [Jesus] Soto Karass and I think I’m going to retire with him.

“I’ve trained with many trainers and they all tried to change my style. That’s why I lost my way at some point in my career. But with Robert [Garcia], it is different. He added to my style and he brought me back on track.

“I keep getting better in each fight, with defense, head movement. What Robert has done is a fine tune. In the first Mayweather fight, I was a little too anxious, and that’s one of the things that Robert helped me fix.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions
“The fight was so good the first time, he’s trying to claim victory in this fight.

“Every great fighter has a great team behind them. Maidana has Robert Garcia and Sebastian Contusi, his manager. They advise him and training him well.

“This is an anticipated rematch that will be more entertaining than the first fight was.

“The last fight produced a winner, MAYHEM will produce a champion.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports
“They called it an ‘Epic fight’, ‘Electrifying,’ ‘A relentless assault,’ ‘Mayweather’s toughest fight in years.’ Those are some of the words writers used to describe the first fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana.

“Some people think that Mayweather won the first fight comfortably, some others think that he won by a slimmer margin. I’m expecting this rematch to pick up right where the last one left off.

“If you look at the judges’ scorecards, they basically split the last five rounds. That’s something we don’t see in Mayweather opponents; to be competitive to the very end and to provide that much action, let alone excitement. That’s why we want to do Mayweather vs. Maidana again.

“We are absolutely happy with the financial performance of the May event. If it wasn’t a success, we certainly would not be doing a direct rematch four months later.”

SEBASTIAN CONTURSI, Marcos Maidana’s Manager
“Maidana deserved a rematch and Mayweather gave it to him because deep down he feels he has to prove himself.

“The driving force behind Maidana is not only his team, it is also the Latino Power.

“Maidana’s empowerment comes from the Latino power that’s going to help him make history on September 13 and end Floyd’s reign.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior VP of Golden Boy Promotions
“Golden Boy Promotions is happy to work once again with Mayweather Promotions. We are committed to bringing the best fights to the public and that’s what we are doing with this rematch.

“I’m told this is the greatest city in the world and that’s why we bring the best fighter in the world to kick off the MAYHEM press tour.

“He’s a little bit like Superman [Floyd Mayweather]. He can do it all. He can box. He can punch. But guess what? Even Superman has a weakness and we saw a little bit of that weakness in that first fight. Some call him Chino, but we call him Mr. Kryptonite.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Maidana’s Trainer
“We are glad Maywweather is giving us the rematch. He’s a tremendous warrior and a tremendous fighter, but we know that we are going to go out and give everybody what they want to see: a great fight.”

Arash Usmanee: Time for Barthelemy to Do the Right Thing and Face Me Again!

Afghani-Canadian super featherweight contender Arash Usmanee wishes to congratulate new IBF Super Featherweight Champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy for his title-winning decision over Argenis Mendez last Thursday (July 10) in Miami.

“Barthelemy looked good taking it to Mendez and he deserves the belt,” said Usmanee.

But now that the dust has settled on the Barthelemy/Mendez rivalry, Usmanee (21-2-1, 10 KOs) says the new champion has only one thing he can do to prove he deserves his spot on top.

“Barthelemy himself knows he didn’t beat me when we fought. If that fight was anywhere but his backyard, he would have never even gotten the chance to fight for the title. If he’s a true champion, he will face me in his first defense and try to erase what everyone but the three judges saw as a loss for him.”

Usmanee and Barthelemy faced off in January of last year in the Cuban Barthelemy’s adopted hometown of Miami and, after 12 rounds, the nearly unanimous consensus was that Usmanee had come on in the second half of the fight to dominate and deserved a clear decision. Unfortunately, the three judges saw it another way and awarded Barthelemy the unanimous verdict. The fight was an IBF title eliminator for the #2 spot in their rankings.

“If our fight was held anywhere but his backyard, he would have never gotten the chance to win the belt,” continued Usmanee. “If he wants to be a true world champion, then he can’t pretend that didn’t happen. A true champion would want to try to erase that blemish on his record immediately and I hope that’s what he chooses to do in his first defense.”

Usmanee’s promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, says he is waiting to hear from Barthelemy’s promotional team.

“They know how lucky their guy got in Florida against my guy. And I know they’re all honorable people, so I expect they’ll take a little time to enjoy the belt and then we can all get to work on establishing the true champion of the IBF at super featherweight. My guy isn’t just going to go away. They need to make this fight to establish their own legitimacy as champion.”

In August of last year, Usmanee, established his performance against Barthelemy was no fluke by fighting to a draw with then-champion Mendez in his only world-title try.

In April of this year, Usmanee took an over-the-weight and short-notice fight (less than one week) against a much bigger Rey Beltran and lost a decision after a valiant effort as the co-feature on the Pacquiao vs. Bradley II undercard. Since then, Usmanee won a decision June 13 over the durable Juan Ruiz and is laser focused on securing the much-deserved rematch with Barthelemy.

Cohen stated, “Usmanee vs. Barthelemy II is a fight that must be made to establish who the true king is at 130 lbs in the IBF. I’m eagerly awaiting hearing from Barthelemy’s people to start negotiations.”
