Font hopes to keep retain title Friday as CES MMA celebrates historic 20th show

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 3rd, 2013) — As it prepares to celebrate its 20th show since the inception of mixed martial arts in Rhode Island, it’s no coincidence Classic Entertainment & Sports has put together an event fit for a king, or, in this case, the undisputed king of New England combat sports.

On Friday, Dec. 6th, 2013, Twin River Casino will host “CES MMA XX,” not only a celebration of the region’s No. 1 mixed martial arts promotion, but also a star-studded event guaranteed to close the 2013 Twin River Fight Series with a bang.

“This might just be our best show yet,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. said, “and it’s a perfect way to end what has been another spectacular year.”

Ticket for “CES MMA XX” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesmma.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at Players Club at Twin River.

Headlining this historic event, Boston, Mass., native Rob Font (7-1, 2 KOs), the reigning CES MMA featherweight champion, will put his title on the line in the main event against Canadian challenger Matt DiMarcantonio (4-3), while Providence, R.I., veteran Luis Felix (9-7, 3 KOs) and Boston’s Lucas Cruz (6-1, 2 KOs) will battle for lightweight supremacy in the highly-anticipate co-feature.

Font is riding a six-fight win streak — three of those wins under the guidance of CES — with four of those fights coming against the top featherweights in the region, including Saul Almeida, Chris Foster and Cruz.

The Cruz-Felix bout — a CES title eliminator in the 155-pound division vacated by Mike Campbell — could steal the show, one of several fights worthy of main-event status on this stacked card. Felix typically saves his best for his most important fights, as evident by his wins over former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veterans Marc Stevens and Joe Proctor, while Cruz, despite his recent loss to Font, owns impressive wins over John Ortolani and Pete Jeffrey at 155.

In another highly-anticipated between two of the region’s top fighters in the welterweight division, fifth-ranked Brett Oteri (11-5, 1 KO) of Dedham, Mass., will face Dennis Olson (13-7, 1 KO) of Amherst, N.H., formerly ranked No. 1 in the 185-pound weight class. Olson last fought at Twin River in April when he submitted Todd Chattelle in the opening round of their main-event rematch.

Also on the undercard, Woonsocket, R.I., featherweight Andre Soukhamthath (6-1, 3 KOs) will aim for his fourth win of the year and seventh consecutive overall, the latter which would make him the winningest fighter in CES MMA history, breaking a tie with the aforementioned Chattelle. Soukhamthath will face 5-foot-7 challenger Corey Simmons (4-5) of Defiance, Ohio.

Not to be outdone, Providence light heavyweight Greg Rebello (15-5, 8 KOs) will end his short-lived retirement and return to the cage Friday following a loss in his last bout in June. Once considered the top fighter in his weight class in New England, Rebello won 11 consecutive fights between 2006 and 2010 before a tough loss to Dan Cramer at the Bellator Fighting Championships. After losing a split decision to Lewis Rumsey in June — his third loss in six fights — Rebello announced his retirement, but has decided to resume his career Friday in CES MMA’s 20th celebration show.

The undercard of “CES MMA XX” will also feature the return of fan-favorite Charles Rosa (5-0, 2 KOs), a rising star in the lightweight division who wrestled collegiately at Providence’s Johnson & Wales University before returning home to Boynton Beach, Fla., but still maintains a strong fan base in Rhode Island. Rosa made his CES debut in October with an impressive submission win over Steve McCabe and will now face the dangerous Ralph Johnson (5-8, 5 KOs) of Worcester, Mass.

Looking to keep his perfect record intact, East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate Andrews (5-0, 2 KOs) will step up face seasoned Miamisburg, Ohio, veteran Tyler Combs (13-11, 8 KOs), while another unbeaten prospect, Providence welterweight Eric Spicely (2-0), will return for his third and final fight of 2013 when he faces Connecticut native Tyler Rose (1-0) in a three-round bout. Providence featherweight Tom Evans (2-2, 1 KO) will look to snap a two-fight losing streak when he faces Ruso Khubejashvili (3-2) of Massachusetts and welterweight Keenan Raymond (1-0) of Providence will face Addison O’Neal. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI AND UNDERCARD FIGHTERS BROOKLYN MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Paulie Malignaggi
Paulie Malignaggi, Two-Time and Two-Division World Champion

“I expect the best Zab Judah. [I expect] a Zab Judah who is going to be fighting for his boxing career. I feel the same way.

“If we saw each other in the gym, we would try to knock each other out. There’s no love taps. With this much on the line you can bet we’re both going to have it out on Saturday.

“You have to be stubborn to have longevity. One or two losses can quickly demote you to a second level fighter, but you have to have the stubbornness to keep going.

“There’s a lot of emotion, but at the end of the day we gotta do what we gotta do to win.

“I want that Broner vs. Maidana winner, first things first. I have to get through Saturday night.

“A win over Zab Judah is what I want for Christmas. That suffices.

“It’s exciting every time you’re part of a big promotion, it’s not a world championship fight, but it still has that feel and that vibe. On Saturday night it will feel like it’s a championship fight in Barclays Center.

“We’re both motivated to win, but when you’re at this level anything can get you motivated for a fight like this.

“If you’re not motivated for this, you better check your pulse to make sure you’re alive.”

Devon Alexander, IBF Welterweight World Champion:

“This time, I’m putting myself in Porter’s shoes, I know what its like to get excited for a world title match. His skills are limited and I’m going to come to fight.

“I feel good fighting here [in Brooklyn]. It is my second time and it definitely feels like home. They’re definitely bringing boxing back to Brooklyn.

“I’ve been in camp all this time. I’m back to normal and Saturday night you’ll see it.

“You can expect me to win and be explosive. I’m going to be smart and get the win. I know Shawn is hungry. I was in that position and now I’m in this position.

“I’m already there and I’m not losing to anybody.

“I’ve been blessed too much to want something for Christmas. I’ll be giving this year.

“After this fight we can expect bigger and better things. I’ll be a major player at 147. Whoever steps up to the plate next I’ll fight them too.

“Whichever fight is available after this, that’s the one I’m taking.”

Shawn Porter, Undefeated Welterweight Contender

“There’s a lot of excitement period. this is the biggest fight of my career. The week is here.

“We worked extremely hard this camp working on the mental and physical aspects of this fight.

“We pushed hard to beat the champ.

“We worked my heart out. We did 18 rounds in the gym.

“We’re going to mix it up. I’ve seen a few of his [Alexander’s] fights. He’s going to scrap. He’s been booed but he won’t be booed on Saturday night. He’ll come ready.”

Erislandy Lara, WBA Interim Super Welterweight World Champion

“My training went well and I’m ready to go. Trout talks too much. He’s all talk and no show.

“I’m a solid fighter with skills and I’m at the top of my division.

“On Saturday night it will be the better boxer, better puncher and more intelligent fighter.”
“On Saturday night we are going to see who has the bigger heart and bigger balls”

Sakio Bika, WBC Super Middleweight World Champion

“I feel good and I want to show the people at Barclays Center that I am one of the best.

“I want Barclays Center to become my second home.

“I feel happy to be back in New York.

“It’s going to be a good night for St. Louis. Everything we did there was good.

“I’m looking to maintaining my record and win this fight.”

Anthony Dirrell, Undefeated Super Middleweight Contender

“It feels great to fight at Barclays Center. It feels good to be on a big card.

“I’m experienced too. I’ve been doing it twenty years. I just know I’m an athlete I can do it all. That’s my plan, do what I want to do.

“I’m going to go in and do what I need to do to win.

“This is one of the hardest training camps I’ve had and I’m ready.

Sadam Ali, Undefeated Welterweight Prospect and 2008 U.S. Olympian

“My last fight was here and I want to keep boxing in Brooklyn alive.

“I want to become a Barclays Center staple. It’s always exciting to fight there.

“I fought 200 amateur fights and waited for the right opportunity and the right people to get me here.

“I felt a little rusty in September fighting an awkward fighter, but I feel back to normal now.”

Marcus Browne, Light Heavyweight Prospect and 2012 U.S. Olympian

“I’m ready to show my growth from the last fight and put on a show.

“I like to have fun and make it look easy. I’m not trying to go eight rounds.

“I want to end my year on a good note and progress into 2014.

“My training was great, I was on weight a month and a half ago because I never got out of the gym.”

[Regarding his opponent Kevin Engel] “He’s tall and a righty. Past fights can be deceiving, but he didn’t look fast. I’m going to use that to my advantage and work my speed.”

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 7 CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 3, 2013) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Tuesday with “World Series of Fighting 7: Karakhanyan vs. Palmer” headliners Georgi Karakhanyan (22-3-1) and Lance Palmer (7-0), as well as main-card competitors Elvis Mutapcic (13-2), Jesse Taylor (26-9), Nick Newell (10-0) and Sabah Fadai (7-2). Joining the fighters on the call was WSOF President Ray Sefo.

World Series of Fighting 7 will take place this Saturday on Dec. 7 at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Karakhanyan and Palmer headline the NBCSN-televised card, competing for the inaugural World Series of Fighting featherweight title. The live telecast starts at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and is preceded by undercard fights streaming live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, www.wsof.com, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

The following are highlights from the conference call:

RAY SEFO:
“These are exciting times for World Series of Fighting. We are looking to be in every household around the world by the end of 2015. I’m really looking forward to this show and it’s a stacked card. Guys like Jesse Taylor and Nick Newell and Elvis Mutapcic are the future stars of this sport. I think it’s a pretty exciting time for all these guys.”

What can we expect internationally in 2014? Can we expect more fights in Canada?
“Yes, absolutely. We just signed a deal with Australia and New Zealand, they are going to do like six shows. Canada will be about the same thing. Of course they won’t all be on the mother ship, meaning they won’t all be on NBC. I believe those that aren’t would be streamed live.”

GEORGI KARAKHANYAN:
“I know Lance (Palmer) comes from a good wrestling background and trains with a good team. But at the end of the day it’s an MMA fight and so once that door’s locks it doesn’t matter. It’s not a wrestling match. I’m looking to go out there and finish. I like to fight, and I don’t mind getting punched in the face. And I don’t mind punching him back. I’m just looking to go out there and put on an exciting fight for the Canadian fans. And I’m going for a finish.

“I think I’ve just learned how to win fights and how to break my opponents. I used to look to go into a fight and finish right away and if I didn’t then I would get discouraged. But I’ve learned from it. I’m in the gym every day unless I’m over-trained or sick. I’m always trying to learn and work on my weaknesses. I’m just learning how to perform under the bright lights once that door locks and all the people are watching.”

LANCE PALMER:
“It’s been a pretty crazy past month and everything’s happened pretty quick with the signing last month with the World Series of Fighting also with the world title fight. For me I was in between contracts with another promotion and I had a good couple of calls with the WSOF guys. And things just progressed from there and next thing you know Rick Glenn had to pull out of his fight and they gave me the opportunity for me to step in there on four weeks’ notice. So it’s been exciting and a fun process so far leading up to this point.”

ELVIS MUTAPCIC:
Did you experience any negative feedback based on the controversy following your WSOF 5 fight cancellation vs. Jesse Taylor:
“I got 99 percent positive feedback. There were some people that were questioning if I took something and there’s always going to be that. Like I said I was really upset that it happened. We get a chance to make a living doing what we love and that night it gotten taken away. If it wasn’t for the World Series being such a great company, me and Jesse would have been out a paycheck. So I just want to thank World Series for that. So I’m just happy that I get to go in there and take care of what we should have finished three months ago.

“I’m really familiar with Jesse. He’s a very good wrestler and very well-rounded. I think he’s the best fighter that I’ve faced out there, which I truly think he is. I expect him to be very aggressive and to come forward and I expect a dog fight to the finish.”

JESSE TAYLOR:
“I just want to get in there and I want to fight. I know it’s going to be a good one and I want to have some fun. I’m ready. Me and Elvis are going to put on a great show in Canada. Thank you, Ray Sefo, for everything you’ve done. I’m hungry and I’m ready.”

NICK NEWELL:
On fighting in Fadai’s hometown of Vancouver:
“That doesn’t matter to me. It doesn’t matter where we fight. It’s another fight and another opponent. It sounds like (Fadai) has got the right mindset. Whatever. It’s just another fight and I’m going to go out there and give my best and put on an entertaining fight.

“I’m more worried about Fadai right now and the threat he poses to me. I’m really just concentrated on this fight right now more than anything else. When it comes to the title you have to beat everybody if you think you’re the best. In due time I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there and fight whoever I have to fight. There are no easy fights in the World Series of Fighting.

“I feel like I’m being looked at more for my skill now than for having one hand. People are always going to say, ‘Look at that guy, I can’t believe it.’ It’s a part of who I am. If I go to the movies someone will say, ‘Look at the guy with one hand going to the movies.’ It’s always going to be like that. There will be people who have negative things to say but I grew up with it and have a pretty thick skin. I’m a fighter at the end of the day and a pretty good one and that’s why I’m in the World Series of Fighting: because of what I’ve accomplished and not because of the way I was born.”

SABAH FADAI:
“It’s going to be great to fight in my backyard of Vancouver in front of all my fans.

“I’m often asked, ‘How do you prepare for a guy with one arm?’ You really don’t. You can’t bring in somebody and tie off their arm. It just doesn’t work that way. I think Nick (Newell) is a tough guy. I’m not going to take anything away from him. I think he uses one arm as an advantage. Like I’ve said before, I’m going to go out there to hurt him. It’s our job to fight and that’s what I’m going to do. Especially coming into my town, it’s just not going to happen.”

ROY JONES, JR. TO FIGHT IN MOSCOW ON DECEMBER 21

royjones2
PENSACOLA, Fla. (December 3, 2013) – Square Ring Promotions and Hrunov Promotions announced today that Roy Jones, Jr. (56-9, 40 KO’s) would be back in the ring on December 21, 2013 in Moscow, Russia in a 12 round WBU Cruiserweight title fight against Frenchman Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf (17-3-1, 8 KO’s).

“Roy is excited to be coming back to Russia to fight, and we are very happy that we were able to put this together so quickly with our good friend and partner Vlad Hrunov,” said John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring Promotions. “We are disappointed that the fight with Bobby Gunn didn’t happen, but there were just too many loose ends, and it was taking far too long. Vlad came forward and closed the deal on Monday. We have a longstanding relationship with him and his team and knew that he could make it happen.”
“I told Bobby that I would fight him. I meant it then and mean it now,” said Roy Jones. “On Saturday, John told me that they were still trying to make changes to the contract, but that he could make a deal with Vlad, so I told him that the first one to close a deal was where I was gonna go and Russia won. That’s why we’re calling this fight ‘Winner Take All.’”
“This is my early Christmas present to all Russian boxing fans,” said Vlad Hrunov. “Most Americans don’t realize how much Roy is loved here in Russia—he’s bigger than Ali or Tyson. Russian fans want to root for Roy—that’s why I picked a foreign opponent for him. December 21 is going to be a huge Christmas party and a great night of boxing.”
“I encouraged Roy to take the fight in Russia,” said McGee Wright, Jones’ longtime manager. “We have been developing the Russian market for the past couple of years and it was the perfect time for Roy to fight there again. It’s always a pleasure to visit, and we are looking forward to another RJJ classic!”

CALLING ALL WELTERWEIGHT TITLE HOLDERS JO JO DAN WANTS AND DESERVES HIS SHOT IN 2014

New York, NY (12/3/13) – Fresh off his thrilling 12-round split decision victory over hometown favorite and previously undefeated Kevin Bizier in Quebec City this past weekend, IBF #2 and WBC #6-rated welterweight contender Jo Jo Dan (32-2, 17KO’s) is looking to land a much deserved world title opportunity sometime in 2014. The 32-year-old Romanian, who has been calling Canada home since late in his decorated amateur career, is hoping that one of the belt-holders in the loaded 147lb. division will step up and give him a shot.

“I am back at the top level,” said an excited Dan following his victory over Bizier. “I am very satisfied with this win. Bizier was an undefeated, highly ranked fighter, and I came here and pulled out the decision in his backyard. My determination and experience were the difference in the fight.”

“After Saturday night, Jo Jo Dan has clearly established himself as one of the best welterweights in the world and proven that he is championship material. It is time for him to get his opportunity. I hope that everyone who hasn’t already seen his fight with Bizier gets a chance to watch it and see for themselves what kind of warrior Jo Jo Dan truly is,” saidpromoter Lou DiBella.

In the bout with Bizier, Dan set a blistering pace right from the start, taking the fight directly to his opponent. Dan didn’t let off the gas throughout, constantly pressing the action. Bizier had success of his own, landing hard shots against the southpaw Dan, but each time Bizier would score, Dan would fire off ferocious combinations on the inside to not let Bizier get the upper hand. The action-packed fight brought the near capacity crowd to their feet multiple times, and the fighters ended their grueling 12-round battle going toe-to-toe in the center of the ring.

It was the third consecutive victory for Dan following two close decision losses in world title opportunities to Selcuk Aydin in Aydin’s home country of Turkey in 2010 and 2011. After the second loss, Dan was out of the ring for nearly a year before signing with DiBella Entertainment. Promoter Lou DiBella brought Dan to New York, featuring him on back-to-back Broadway Boxing cards at Roseland Ballroom, which were Dan’s first bouts here in the US. The two wins propelled Dan back into the world ratings and set him up for the bout against Bizier this past Saturday.

“Jo Jo did a great job on Saturday night, winning two titles and becoming the #2-ranked contender in the IBF with his victory over the top-rated hometown favorite Bizier. The local media is calling it Quebec’s ‘Fight of the Year’. Fights like these are great for boxing. You had two warriors and gentlemen of the sport going toe-to-toe and giving the fans exactly what they want and deserve. Maybe, down the road, we can do this fight again, but next time with a world title at stake and main event status. In the meantime, we are looking for the biggest fights possible and trust that our promoter Lou DiBella will get us those opportunities. When those opportunities present themselves, as he did on Saturday night, Jo Jo Dan will be ready to make the most of it,” said longtime manager Chris Ganescu.

With the impressive victory, there are a lot of options out there for Dan. He is highly rated in both the IBF and WBC and holds both the NABA and IBF Inter-Continental welterweight titles. A bout against the winner of this Saturday’s all-Brooklyn bout on Showtime between Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah, a shot against hard-hitting Argentine WBC Silver welterweight champion Luis Carlos Abregu or even a IBF title eliminator against undefeated Kell Brook all make sense. But if you ask Dan, he isn’t being picky.

“I just want my shot. I proved and solidified on Saturday what my team and I have felt for a very long time, that I am one of the best 147lb. fighters in the world. I deserve another shot at a piece of the welterweight crown. I don’t care who it is. I trust my team will get me the best opportunity possible, and I have no doubt in my mind that I will be ready.”

“The fight is all signed, sealed and delivered. Both guys signed their contracts,” Gomez said. “K9 really wants another title shot and Hernandez is a very hungry fighter, so I think it should be a good fight. It’s a very important fight for both guys.”

JUDAH AND MALIGNAGGI MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT,

Zab Judah
Marylyn Aceves
Thanks everyone for joining us today. We have Zab Judah and Paulie Maliganggi available to talk to you and answer your questions about the fight

Richard Schaefer
Thank you, Marylyn. I’m really excited, I’ve been talking with Paulie and Zab Judah, I know its freezing cold in New York but those guys are going to heat up the Barclays Center. It’s been a terrific year for SHOWTIME. It has been the best year in boxing history for SHOWTIME and SHOWTIME is not ending the year with one bang but two bangs. The first one will be Dec. 7 here with Judah and Malignaggi. It’s a battle of Brooklyn; it’s for the pride of Brooklyn.

We also have some of the best talent in those respective weight classes that are going to be showcasing what they are all about in meaningful fights. Truly a big thank you to SHOWTIME for stepping up and delivering this fight card to fans in the U.S. and around the world.

It’s been the biggest year in their short boxing history for Barclays Center. It was no other than Paulie Malignaggi who opened up the building last October and every one of those events since we’ve seen more and more people embracing the sport and showing up at Barclays Center. Every show we’re going from one record crowd to the next and that’s exactly what I expect for this big night on Dec. 7 – a new record crowd for Barclays Center.

Pricing tickets that everyone can afford has become a hallmark for Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets are an unbelievable deal. We want a record crowd event at Barclays Center. It’s really an unbelievable deal to see this great card.

I want to thank our sponsors as well – Corona, AT&T, Casamigos Tequila and the Grudge Match, a movie which will be coming out in December.

I now want to introduce to you Zab Judah. He’s one of the best known names in the sport of boxing. He’s always exciting and that’s exactly what this sport wants and needs. He knows what’s at stake here. It’s not just the pride of Brooklyn, but the 147-pound weight class is the deepest weight class, the biggest names are fighting there and that’s exactly what Zab Judah wants. He knows he needs to beat Paulie Malignaggi to move on to those big world title fights in the division.

Zab Judah
Thank you, Richard, I appreciate it. Training camp has been fun. We had a great training camp here in Las Vegas and a lot of good public relations and I’m just excited to come back home and be crowned the king of BK.

Richard Schaefer
Paulie is one of the most skilled fighters, always comes to win. He has a tremendous personality outside the ring. I think whatever he does he always strives to be on top and I think there’s no question Paulie is the best color commentator in the sport. But it doesn’t stop there – Paulie still has unfinished business in the ring and he realizes what a win against Zab is going to do to him in that stacked weight class. So he’s going to come to win.

Paulie Malignaggi
It’s a pleasure being on with everyone once again. I really look forward to mixing it up with Zab and hopefully we get a record crowd for Brooklyn at Barclays Center. I know he’s got a lot of support in Brooklyn and I know I have a lot of support in Brooklyn. We have a great supporting cast on the undercard and I think this card has the potential to be the best card that Barclays Center has put on yet, and we’ve had some great cards there. Hopefully, like Richard said, we get a good crowd. I would like it to be a sell-out card. I think it is going to be the most spectacular card that has been at Barclays yet. I look forward to mixing it with him and seeing who really is the king of Brooklyn for this generation and I’ve prepared very well for that.

Q: Dan Rafael ESPN- Hello guys- good to talk to you today. I’d like you both to answer. You guys are both from Brooklyn in the same weight class. When did you start to think this fight would happen?

Zab Judah
For me this fight came about after the Garcia fight. In my preparation for moving forward to do what I do they said Paulie and I said “Paulie, nah, Paulie is my homeboy.” But I was like, ‘Hey, you know this is an opportunity that you’ve got to take for boxing.’ So I guess we’re here now. Like I said, this is a fight where there’s no animosity or anything like that. It’s just us going in there and representing for our city.

Paulie Malignaggi
I’d like to echo the same sentiments as Zab. For a lot of years I came up behind Zab and he kind of laid the building blocks for my generation. He was kind of the guy to look up to and to try to match his accomplishments. It really didn’t come to mind, we were in different weight classes and at different places in our career, but people started mentioning it and talking around Brooklyn the past year or two. But I still didn’t think the fight had any chance of happening because we were still in different weight classes and kind of had different goals for our careers. We each took a competitive loss in our last fight and it’s kind of a situation where you have to take a step back in way from world title fights. But this isn’t such a step back because we’re still world-class even with no world title on the line.

It made a lot of sense from that perspective and also for us both being from Brooklyn. Until the fight was made I didn’t think it would be more than Brooklyn talk and that’s all. I think in the last couple of years people started getting in my ear that people in Brooklyn wanted to see what would happen if me and Zab Judah got in the ring together.

Q -Dan Rafael – I kind of thought this fight would get made a while ago. With the combination of Golden Boy working with the Barclays Center and Zab signing with Golden Boy it seemed like this fight was going to happen.

Paulie Malignaggi
Zab just got signed after the Garcia fight and this was all a recent thing. Once Zab got signed that’s when the fight got brought up. Up until recently I didn’t think it would happen, but then when he got signed it started to come to fruition.

Q- Dan Rafael – You both seem to have a chip on your shoulder in past fights. Is it a little bit more difficult to get motivated for this fight because you guys have a lot of respect and a good relationship outside of the ring?

Zab Judah
My motivation comes from the opportunity. The opportunity of still being here 18 years strong, to be competitive against young fighters like Paulie Malignaggi and Danny Garcia, and to still be competing at a high level of boxing. I mean, to be crowned the kings of BK, that’s a very big accomplishment coming from Brooklyn. There’s one thing a lot of people will tell you – there’s a pride about being from Brooklyn. Now we’ve got the opportunity in a sport that I’ve been in for the last 18 years of my life to be called the king of it. I’m excited for this one and that’s where the motivation comes from on my part.

Paulie Malignaggi
The competition drives us all. That’s the reason we do this and get up in the morning and train hard for each fight. You need different things to drive you. The competition always is the driving force. The competitor in me is driven by winning. Winning means everything to me. Yeah, Zab is someone I respect and looked up to coming up, but winning means everything to me. I’m a competitor in anything I do, especially boxing. It’s not hard to get up for a fight like this. You can still respect your opponent and still get up for a fight. Come on man, we’re both wearing eight ounce gloves so I’m sure once someone gets hit we’ll both be throwing arms at each other.

Q- I know you both want to win really bad. How hard would it be to lose this fight in your hometown?

Paulie Malignaggi
I think it’s more for the fans. It’s hard to go back to your fans and say, ‘Oh man you’re not the best fighter in your borough.’ I think the motivation is from there. You fight guys from other cities and you rep your neighborhood, you rep your city real well. I get announced as from Brooklyn, N.Y., regardless of where I’ve lived in my career because it’s a sense of pride. Here, the other guy is announced from Brooklyn, N.Y., and it’s a sense of inner-pride within the city. You have to run into the other guy’s fans. I don’t run into Adrien Broner fans in New York or other people’s fans in New York. But I can run into Zab’s fans and that is a mini-motivator itself.

Zab Judah
Like Paulie said, the job is the motivation for what we’re doing right now. I’m motivated by the opportunity. I’m motivated by the situation. Paulie is somebody that I’ve known for a long time. I’ve watched him, I’ve watched him grow and there have even been a lot of fights where I’ve supported him. So now, it’s kind of crazy to be going up against each other but it’s the sport that we chose and, like he said, once the bell rings and the leather starts flying I think that anybody would come to their senses.

Paulie Malignaggi
It’s a really emotional fight. You want to be king of Brooklyn. It’s the kind of fight you get up for because there are a lot big fights in your career but there is a lot of extra emotion being able to represent your borough and being able to be the king of Brooklyn. I know I have what it takes to be a world class fighter; I know what it takes to get back to the top. Winning a fight like this and getting myself a chance to get another world championship in my career is something I don’t doubt

Q- Lem Satterfield- Zab- Paulie told me about a time when you coached him as an amateur. He said he lost the fight but he’s always looked up to you. Do you remember that and do you remember what you thought of him as a fighter back then?

Zab Judah
I thought he won that fight, from my recollection. Even back then as an amateur he had a heart, he was gutsy. He came out, he was very scrappy. I recall that, yeah, we kind of pulled out a lot of champions that year. So yeah, I think that Paulie did win the fight that year.

Paulie Malignaggi
I didn’t win that fight but I lost to a big rival of mine. But we won the team trophy. Zab was the team coach and we won the team trophy at the Empire State Games.

Q- Lem- Obviously you guys fought at the highest level both at 140 pounds and 147 pounds. At what point do you think you were at the absolute best in your career?

Zab Judah
I would probably say my Mickey Ward fight. I was 15-0 and I was highly motivated. That was one training camp I remember Ronnie Shields and my dad – we had a tough training camp. I was only 15-0, I remember taking on Mickey Ward and he had like 34 or something fights. He was known as a killer at that time, he was stopping guys with body shots. Everyone was like, ‘Zab that’s not a fight you should take, it’s going to mess your career up.’ And we went in there and we trained very hard, we had a dog camp and went in there and won the fight.

The first half of the Mayweather fight I was super sharp. It’s different times. Even in my last Danny Garcia fight I came on very strong at the end. I don’t look at one particular fight and say this was the best fight because every night is special to me. Every time you step in the ring you’ve got different things that happen, you’ve got to weather through them.

Paulie Malignaggi
I’d say there have been a couple different times in my career when I was at an elite level or getting there. There was a moment in 2003 and 2004 where I thought I was really coming into my own, starting to win fights and starting to look impressive. I was getting to fight high level contenders and then I had a real bad hand injury. My hand was shattered and it set me back a lot and hindered a lot of my progress. I always wonder how I would have kept progressing if I didn’t have those injuries. You have a lot of youthful enthusiasm at that point in your career. I can pick nights where I’ve been sharper than others but I can’t pick one night where I’ve been my best.

Q- How do you capture that moment or those moments in this particular fight? Do you feel that you’re motivated given that you’re fighting in your home town?

Zab Judah
I’m highly motivated and I’m ready to come in there and do what I do. Like Paulie said, I’m a very competitive person. As everybody can see throughout my career, I hate losing. Some of my early losses I kind of went crazy. I’ve learned to control myself over the years but losing is something that’s not in my arsenal right now and it’s something that we’re not looking forward to doing and we looking at progress and moving forward. This is why we teamed up with Golden Boy and Super Judah Promotions with Golden Boy. We’re ready to take on the world. I think Golden Boy and SHOWTIME are the two biggest- you’ve got the biggest promoter and you’ve got the biggest network out there and this is a place where Zab Judah needs to be. Zab Judah is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, hands down, and I am going to show the world that I am the best. Give me the opportunity and I’ll show you.

Paulie Malignaggi
I think the motivation has to always be there. I think if you try too hard to summon it you fight yourself out. I look at the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my career and I try to put my best game face on fight night. If you think about trying to match your best performances you probably won’t because you’ll be thinking about the wrong things. The focus has to be to concentrate and focus on the person in front of you. You have to focus one round at a time, one minute at a time. And from there you put on some good performances without evening knowing it. I don’t think the goal is to put on a good performance, I think the goal is to execute a game plan when you go in there. Sometimes it comes out beautifully, sometimes it doesn’t. But you can’t go in there trying to put on a good show, you go in there trying to execute. That’s what I go in there trying to do.

Richard
First of all I want to say that both of those guys are rejuvenated because of all of the opportunities at 147 pounds. For both of them, one of their best fights is actually their last fight. When Paulie fought Broner he fought a great, great fight and I think he surprised a lot of people. Most people had it as an easy fight for Broner and look what he did. And that’s not because of what Broner didn’t do; it’s because of what Paulie did. I think he’s right there at the top and he knows what this win can lead to and how important this fight is. The same goes for Zab fighting Danny Garcia- most people thought it would be a one-sided affair. And look what Zab did, he turned back the clock. That’s as good of a Zab as I’ve seen. When Zab wants something he goes for it and I know he wants this. Their biggest fights, their best fights were actually their last fights and that’s why this is such a meaningful showdown.

Q- Mike Woods- This question is for Paulie- You’ve made no secret that in the last couple years you’ve thought about if you want to do this anymore. What are your thoughts now?

Paulie Malignaggi
You don’t give yourself a definitive answer when it comes to something so serious. If I accept the fight then I accept the fight and go in and train 100 percent. Sometimes between fights I’ll be thinking, ‘I don’t know if I’m up to train for a fight again.’ But once mentally and physically I decide to fight I kind of erase the negativity. Its full speed ahead, you step on the gas and you go. Don’t get me wrong, in the beginning of camp when you’re trying to get back into shape you’re like, ‘Man, why did I do this?’ But once that competitive juice comes back and you start getting in shape, you start feeling sharp, you start feeling good and you realize why you do this. You realize the things that spur you on, that motivate you, that drive you to do this. The adrenaline rush, the excitement as a fight approaches and all of a sudden you’re not thinking about those negative things anymore and you’re thinking about all the positive things and all the fun this brings. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard fight fighting at this level. But, at the same time, it’s a situation where I’d rather be here than anywhere else.

Q – Does it make it more difficult because you’ve become such a highly regarded commentator? Because you always have something to fall back on?

Paulie Malignaggi
No, not the training, the training I work hard. Anything I do, I do it wholeheartedly. But sometimes before camp starts you wonder, ‘Do I really feel like getting up and starting another training camp?’ But once I’m in training camp, I do the miles and I put the hours in the gym wholeheartedly. There’s never a time where I say I don’t want to train today because I could fall back on something. I’m not the kind of person that does something half-assed. If I know I won’t do it wholeheartedly I won’t do it. When I accepted this fight I knew what that came with.

Q- Zab – do you ever stay awake at night and say, ‘Man I’m 36 old this really could be my last fight?’

Zab
No, as far as the age, my age is great. I’m highly motivated. You’ve got one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Floyd Mayweather, he’s older than me. You’ve got Juan Manuel Marquez, he just knocked out Manny Pacquiao with one punch, he’s older than me. You’ve got Bernard Hopkins, one of the baddest fighters of today’s era, he’s my grandfather. So when you say old, what do you mean by old? Old by what, longevity? I’ve been in the game since I was 18 years old and I’ve been world champion multiple times in different weight classes. Is that what you mean by old? I mean as far as age goes, I’m far from old. I mean, some of the best of the best of the world today are way older than me and I’m just highly motivated the opportunity. I want to thank Richard Schaefer and the whole Golden Boy staff and team for just even allowing themselves to do business with my camp and myself and I think we’re going to have a phenomenal time. I think that when people say your last time or your last fight is your best fight, this is nowhere near my last fight. This is the beginning of a turn of a new leaf. I am going to go in there and come out of this fight successfully.

Yeah Paulie and I have a great respect for each other, but at the end of the day there can only be one winner and I am going to take that route. I’m going to take that medal of achievement and I’m going to step up and do what I’ve got to do. Is there any beef or anything? No, there’s no beef. But we’re both two competitive athletes and Paulie’s supposed to say his skills are better than mine and I’m supposed to say that my skills are better than Paulie’s. That’s what’s going to make Dec. 7th a fantastic night of boxing. That’s why all of Brooklyn and New York City and the tri-state area and New Jersey and Connecticut need to come out and watch a great night of boxing. You are going to watch two of the best guys to come out of the tri-state area put on for you guys. So be there.

Q- What do you admire most about each other?

Zab Judah
Number one, I admire Paulie because he’s from Brooklyn. He stands up with that Brooklyn pride. He represent Brooklyn wherever he goes, he talks about it and keeps it fresh in people’s ears and eyes. Number two, he’s a fighter. I respect that every fighter has the heart and audacity to climb into the ring and take on competitive fights, so you’ve got to respect him as a human being. Yes, I do.

Paulie Malignaggi
The admiration I have for Zab came from trying to follow in his footsteps coming up. I saw him accomplish things that I had the goal to accomplish. I watched Zab accomplish each and every one of them before me. It was an admiration and a motivator to see someone my city, from my borough accomplish these things and get some credibility and notoriety doing the same thing that I do. When somebody does it so close to home they automatically get that admiration when they’re older than you and you see them accomplishing those things and you kind of want to follow in their footsteps. That admiration comes from being that younger fighter looking up to someone like that.

Q – Gina Caruso – What’s your comfort level now coming back into the ring with someone you know and respect so much.

Zab Judah
I don’t know, it’s the situation. It’s nothing personal against Paulie. It’s something that we’ve got to go in here and do. This is how we feed our family. This is the game that we chose. My greatest motivation in this situation is I just fought a 25-year-old undefeated young fighter, one of the best young 140-pound fighters today and I hung in there. Everybody said if there were 30 more seconds the fight would be different. So that’s where my inspiration and motivation comes from. Just being able to still go toe-to-toe with the young boys like this and just show that when I do step up and when I do focus my mind and focus on getting these guys I just go in there and get them. With that kind of motivation I am the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

Paulie Malignaggi
I think with me, the approach I always take is in boxing you have to have a short memory. No matter how much you’ve accomplished or how low you can go as far as downfalls, you have to forget about them and you have to move on no matter what. I put whatever happened behind me, the Broner fight is done. The opponent now is Zab Judah. As Zab said, there’s nothing personal as far as a competitive aspect is concerned, but that’s the guy in front of me and that’s the guy I intend to be successful against in two weeks. The game plan is focused on that and nothing else. In reality you can only look forward. The past can’t be changed, only the future can be changed.

GLOBAL BOXING STAR AMIR “KING” KHAN TO SERVE AS SPECIAL GUEST ANALYST ON DEC. 7th EDITION OF SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®

Amir Khan
NEW YORK (Dec. 2, 2013) – Amir “King” Khan, one of boxing’s most popular and exciting fighters, joins the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announce team as a guest analyst on Saturday, Dec. 7, live on SHOWTIME (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Khan is substituting for regular SHOWTIME analyst Paul “Magic Man” Malignaggi who headlines the event versus fellow Brooklynite Zab “Super” Judah in a 12-round, all-Brooklyn welterweight main event. The live four-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast also features three world championship fights including IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander versus undefeated Shawn Porter.

Having fought and defeated both Malignaggi and Judah (in 2010 and ’11 respectfully), Khan’s experience in the fight game and intimate knowledge of the main event will be on tap as he joins SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING host Brian Kenny, play-by play announcer Mauro Ranallo, Hall of Fame analyst Al Bernstein and EMMY® Award winning sports reporter Jim Gray.

“I’m really looking forward to working with SHOWTIME on another top draw bill,” said Khan. “The main event between Paulie and Zab will be a Brooklyn blockbuster with two of boxing’s most skilled fighters. Having shared the ring with both men I know together they will bring speed, power, ring craft and heart to the table. Fighting in their own backyard, neither one of them will want to leave that ring the loser so it makes for an extremely intriguing matchup between two truly world class operators. The undercard is filled with some similarly great clashes, which could headline on their own. IBF world champion Devon Alexander versus Shawn Porter, Sakio Bika defending his WBC world title against the undefeated Anthony Dirrell and Austin Trout up against Erislandy Lara. These are the type of fights that can turn into edge-of-the-seat thrillers.”

A former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion, Khan is lightning-fast and athletically gifted inside the ring.

In 2004, Khan became the youngest British Olympic boxing medalist when he won silver at the Athens Olympics at the age of 17. As a professional, Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has faced many of the best fighters of this era including current and past champions Danny Garcia, Zab Judah, Marcos Maidana, Paulie Malignaggi and Marco Antonio Barrera. He won two consecutive fights in the last 12 months, including a hard-fought unanimous decision over world champion Julio Diaz on April 27. A give-and-take boxer-brawler, Khan is a fan favorite wherever he goes. The charismatic young man turns 27 on Dec. 8.

The Dec. 7 quadrupleheader is the first of two consecutive four-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecasts in seven days. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the anticipated match between WBA Welterweight World Champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) and the dangerous Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) will top a four-fight event from San Antonio, Texas that includes three other world title fights.

Puerto Rico – Philippines card postponed due to typhoon

This Saturday night’s card in Puerto Rico that featured fighters from the Philippines has been postponed due to last month’s typhoon in the Philippines according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The new date will be January 25th.

Puerto Rican flyweight McWilliams Arroyo (14-1, 12 KOs), a 2008 Olympian, was due to face Rocky Fuentes (35-6-2, 20 KOs) of the Philippines in the main event — a title eliminator for the right to become the mandatory challenger for world titleholder Moruti Mthalane of South Africa.

In another bout on the card, Puerto Rico’s Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KOs) was due to meet Mark Acub (13-0, 10 KOs) of the Philippines in a scheduled 10-round lightweight contest, Gonzalez’s first since May, when he was easily beating lightweight titleholder Ricky Burns on his home turf in Scotland and headed toward a major upset when he retired before the 10th round, citing a wrist injury.

“The issue is that two fighters in the main bouts won’t be in Puerto Rico in time because the interviews for the visa are delayed in the Philippines and the fight between McWilliams Arroyo and Rocky Fuentes is an eliminator, and we can’t change this bout,” Rivera said. “So we postponed the card to Jan. 25, when we will present the same show that has been announced.”

Also rescheduled is the junior bantamweight title elimination fight between McJoe Arroyo (13-0, 7 KOs), McWilliams’ twin brother and also a 2008 Olympian, against Eliezer Aquino (15-0-1, 9 KOs) of the Dominican Republic.

“I am ready and this supposed to be a step up against the undefeated guy,”said Douglas

“I am a lot more confident as i have worked with Andre Ward.

He excited about the opportunity to take on the undefeated Courter.

“I know that he is coming up in weight and he comes straight forward. He doesn’t have much skill and he leaves himself wide open. I don’t take much stock in his record as he has not fought anybody.”

Douglas is thankful for the amount of work as this will be his 9th fight of 2013.

“That was the plan. I like being busy and it doesn’t stagnate my career. I am ready to get this show on.

Odom of Bowie, Maryland is looking to stay undefeated when he takes on the Michigan native Moon.
“I always have the mindset of winning. I go out there and work my plan and come out on top,”said the 20 year-old Odom.

He doesn’t know a lot about Moon but that doesn’t faze him in the least.

“My trainer does the scouting and he informs me. I don’t watch film because they aren’t fighting me in those previous fights and i know they will fight different against me.”

Odom is looking forward to fighting in front of the knowledgeable New York City crowd.”

“It will be a good experience to fight in New York City. I am not star struck at all. I have been on the big stage as an amatuer and I am going out with this gift and show the fans what I can do.”

Odom is not worried about keeping his impressive knockout in-tact.

“It’s not important to keep that knockout streak alive. There will be fighters I know that i won’t get out of there. I go into a fight expecting to win and if the knockout happens then it does.”

“I just want to thank my promoter Vito Mielnicki for letting me on this card. I am blessed to show my skills in front of some big people in the boxing world.”

Jack Culcay: new coach, same objective!

Light middleweight Jack Culcay (15-1, 10 KOs) is the latest addition to a quality undercard for the vacant WBA World Light Heavyweight title clash between Juergen Braehmer and Marcus Oliveira on December 14. The 28-year-old, who regained the WBA Intercontinental Title in October, is set to defend against Dieudonne Belinga (11-3) at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

However, there has been one big change in “Golden Jack’s” team: Fritz Sdunek is no longer part of it, replaced by renowned British coach Gary Logan. Moritz Klatten, Culcay’s manager: “Fritz Sdunek is one of Germany’s most respected and successful coaches. Though, due to commitments to other fighters, he could not focus enough on Culcay in the recent past. Therefore, we have split with him by mutual agreement.” According to Klatten, Logan is the perfect replacement to Sdunek. “He has already trained and seconded world-class boxers such as George Groves and David Haye. We believe that Jack will progress under his tutelage.”

Culcay also sees the advantage to the change in his corner: “Gary Logan is thoroughly there for me. He has a similar training regime to Mr. Sdunek, yet does some things very different from him. I believe I will become even stronger with Logan as my coach.”

This is something the Amateur World Champion of 2009 aims to prove when he meets Frenchman Belinga in Neubrandenburg. “I am really excited for this match-up, seeing it as a test of my collaboration with Logan,” said Culcay, who will be looking for bigger goals after December 14. Culcay: “I became a professional boxer to fight for the European and World Titles. That is my objective and I will work hard to get closer to it!’’

Kovalev the thankless kolumn krusher

Sergey Kovalev
NEW ORLEANS – If this town is not a traditional place for giving thanks, an American ideal rendered ever more vestigial with each year’s business-hours alterations and doorbusting sins, its greed consuming what greed wrought even on the single day generations of Americans once marked with a cessation of their profit motive, it is nevertheless a place where circumstances placed me on Thanksgiving 2013, and so. But expect no turkey leg this or pilgrim that or cranberrying of the other; if this column is stuffed with anything, it will be art and Sergey Kovalev.

For he is the man who stole another HBO show Saturday, in a co-main event match with Ismayl Sillakh that went off in main-event-champion Adonis Stevenson’s adopted and adapted hometown of Quebec, a co-main event match Kovalev made a stage of, ruining a multicultural Ukrainian standard bearer with a conqueror’s zeal and without four minutes of trying.

If you are a person who writes about our beloved sport weekly and needs to hit a word count before filing, you might want to have a backup plan for those three or so weeks every year you write about Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, because he cares not a whit for carrying an opponent long enough to give you adequate action from which to fashion meaningful commentary. And from what we know of him from what we’ve seen in 2013, he probably would taunt you for missing that word count, given his druthers, or more probably taunt you for fearing you might miss it, and taunt you in a crooked stream of Russlish or Englian utterances till he had you a blubbering, wordless mess.

But if you are better at this craft than most of Kovalev’s recent opponents have been at theirs, you should have a secondary or tertiary tack, a subject to treat like the lineal champion of Kovalev’s light heavyweight division, a man, Adonis “Superman” Stevens, who despite seeming uniquely crazy before any overmatched opponent in a staredown, proves remarkably lucid, sober even, when offered a chance to offer to throw hands with Kovalev – or barring that, at least you should have spent your Thanksgiving in a city dark and conflicted and mysterious as this one.

Some words about the darkness round here: Away from the pissing places for which this city’s Bourbon Street is equal parts famous and notorious is a culturally rich metropolis, quite dark after sunset as if still recovering electricity from Katrina, and layered with a deeply held resentment concealed by a substantial glaze of Southern gentility and grace. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, on the grounds of the wholly underrated New Orleans Museum of Art, is a recovered and teeming and lovely place to spend an afternoon or two, filled as it is with water and works by an international roster of sculptors who recovered contemporary art from wherever American painters like Warhol and Pollack dumped it decades ago.

Sergey Kovalev, meanwhile, dashed through Ismayl Sillakh in round 2 of their Saturday fight like Sillakh, for whose wares we were given the hard sell by Max Kellerman because Roy Jones believed in them enough to promote Sillakh and get himself temporarily recused from the broadcast, was so much wet tissue paper. Kovalev did not appear to hurt Sillakh with any right crosses in the first, but he did appear to think he had, and so, when he threw the same in the second and connected with Sillakh only partially, he then stood in a neutral corner and dictated to the Ukrainian, in Russian, surely not Sillakh’s first language but one that should burst his ears with imperial implication, he would knock him out were the Ukrainian masochistic enough to rise.

And Sillakh did, too, and Kovalev did, too too, fooled by his own power into taking Sillakh’s stability and consciousness with a right cross and crossed over left cross before Sillakh’s crossed eyes, beneath his own crossed feet, before Kovalev could make a suitably sadistic show of it – which one genuinely senses Kovalev genuinely trains to do, nursing not so much hatred of an opponent but appreciation for his own cruelty: I do not be mad at opponent because that making him human. Argentine Lucas Matthysse was celebrated as “The Machine” because of the impersonal way he ruined opponents with a placid mask on his handsome Welsh face. Kovalev is very much more a Krusher, because that cognomen requires a direct object, machines do not, and leads with letters that recall nothing so much as the Kremlin, the architecturally daring capital of the former Soviet Union, an imperial behemoth that krushed resistance from Kyrgyzstan to Ukraine.

Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, the Haitian-born Quebecer who marches to the ring in a Kronk-yellow bellyshirt cape accompanied by the euphonious waves of a John Williams score, stalked, sustained and sapped Tony Bellew in Saturday’s main event, stopping the overmatched Brit with left hands as well-placed, if not -timed, as Kovalev’s right hands in the co-main. But as trainer and writer Joel Stern aptly foretold on Twitter last week: “Kovalev and Stevenson this weekend in a double header that will set up a future Kovalev and Stevenson double header.”

One feels this matchup already headed the way Juanma vs. Gamboa went some moons ago, though without a prickly single-promoter issue to cite; if Stevenson and Kovalev do not fight it will be HBO’s fault for offering Stevenson either too much money to fight others or not enough to fight Kovalev, and one is hard pressed to see how the network should stumble badly enough to land in either those scenarios. If Superman and Krusher do fight, it should create a short classic, one that sees Kovalev stunned almost instantly by a Stevenson left cross and Stevenson beaten unconscious before the fourth round concludes. It is a fight that must be made before the new regime at HBO Sports becomes another old regime at HBO Sports.

Cohen Knows WBA #10 Heavyweight Kauffman Must Stay Focused on Saturday’s Fight

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions knows his fighter, Travis Kauffman, must stay focused tomorrow night, when the WBA #10 heavyweight steps in the ring against late sub Jason Barnett of Clearwater, Florida, at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Kauffman (26-1, 19 KOs) will face Barnett for the WBU Intercontinental Championship in the eight-round main event of a card entitled “Let’s Get Reading to Rumble” and presented by King’s Promotions.

“Travis is in line for some big fights, so it’s very important he not look past this opponent, who has scored some upset wins in the past and always comes to fight,” said Cohen. “These are often the most dangerous fights a fighter can take because it’s so easy to have one eye on the future and not on the fight.”

Kauffman has some serious momentum going, winning eight consecutive fights. This will be his third in just over three months. He was originally scheduled to take on capable veteran Manuel Quezada, but paperwork difficulties nixed the fight on short notice.

“The recipe is certainly there for an upset, but Travis is a solid professional who has been brought along perfectly. I know he will go in and get the job done and then the future is extremely bright for him. He’s a very talented American heavyweight with everything it takes to be a star. I will be happy when the fight is over and we can begin to focus on a career-defining fight for him.”
