UNDEFEATED MIDDLEWEIGHT SENSATION ANTOINE “ACTION” DOUGLAS TO TAKE ON IBAHIEM KING ON JUNE 14TH AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN ARENA IN WEST ORANGE, NJ

Nutley, NJ (June 5, 2013)—On Friday night, June 14th, a special night of boxing will take place as Greg Cohen Promotions and GH3 Promotions will present ESPN’s Friday Night Fight’s at the South Mountain Arena in West Orange, New Jersey.

One of the featured fights on the undercard will pit rising and undefeated Middleweight prospect Antoine “Action” Douglas taking on his most experienced rival in Ibahiem King in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

Douglas of Washington, D.C. has shot out to a perfect mark of 7-0 with five knockouts and this will already be his sixth fight of 2013.

Douglas has been stepping up the competition with each fight and has already appeared on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights two times in 2013.

“I am always ready to fight, no matter how experienced he is or what his record is. I have the same mindset”, said Douglas.

“I have been working and sparring with southpaws. I am faster and stronger”

Douglas is not worried that King has 19 professional fights.

“I am faster, I have more skills and with my amateur background, I look at myself as being the more experienced fighter”

King of West Palm Beach, Florida has a record of 11-8 with two knockouts and is by far the most experienced for the twenty year-old Douglas.

This will be the seventh undefeated fighter that King will have faced which includes top prospects Abraham Han, Edwin Rodriguez, J’Leon Love and Delen Parsley. King is coming off a 3rd round stoppage over Anthony McManaway on February 16th.

In the twelve round main event, it will be a twelve round Bantamweight battle of undefeated fighters as Jundy Maraon (15-0-1) of the Philippines takes on Juan Carlos Payano (13-0, 7 KO’s) of the Dominican Republic.

Doors open at 6:00 pm and the action starts at 7:30.

The Richard J. Codey Arena at South Mountain is located at 560 Northfield Avenue in West Orange, New Jersey.

Huck and Afolabi don’t hold back during final presser!

WBO World Champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and his challenger Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) have already entered fight mode. During Wednesday´s press conference, three days before the top-notch cruiserweights square off inside the ring, they got involved into a verbal altercation.

28-year-old Huck accused his opponent of provoking him on purpose. “He is just trying to rattle my cage and is hoping that it will cause me to make mistakes,” said the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner. “But he is fighting a losing battle. I am the champion and I will still be the champion after the fight. I will give him my answers inside the ring.” And the German was not done yet. “I proved before that I can beat him. But he cannot beat me. I know that I am better than he is. I also have a better fan base behind me, who will be celebrating another victory with me after I am done with that guy.”

However, Afolabi who resides in Los Angeles seems to have taken on some of the Hollywood-attitude surrounding him. After being asked if he really is as confident as he makes himself out to be or if he is just an actor, he replied: “I am an actor! Marco wants to give his fans a great show and so do I. All these theatrics ahead of the fight only increase the attention. We definitely enjoyed ourselves. It got a bit heated, but that is the way it’s supposed to be.”

However, Afolabi could not resist another attempt to unnerve the champion. “If you are a Huck fan you might say that he won our last fight. If you are an Afolabi fan, you might give it to me. However, after Marco Huck’s last fight against Firat Arslan, Stevie Wonder looked at me and said: Arslan definitely won no doubt about it.”

Huck immediately replied to the laughing Brit: “You are smiling now. But you won’t be after Saturday.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany are available at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

Glendy Hernandez ready to Challenge Andy Ruiz Jr.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 5, 2013) — Undefeated Cuban heavyweight Glendy “The Guantanamo Giant” Hernandez (10-0, KOs) has issued a challenge to fight unbeaten Mexican-American Andy Ruiz, Jr. (18-0, 12 KOs).

“We want to fight Andy Ruiz to show that, not only do I have the talent to beat him by points,” Hernandez said, “but that I also have power to knock him out.”

Hernandez, who has been trained the past year by coach German Caicedo at Caicedo’s Sports Gyms in Miami, has kept training with confidence that he will soon have an opportunity at this stage of his career to showcase his technical and physical improvements.

“The best thing that ever happened to my career was coming to this gym to train the way we do now,” Hernandez explained. “The routines shown to me by my coach have resulted in excellent improvements, and confidence to challenge any opponent in my weight this class.”

Hernández made his professional boxing debut in February of 2010, defeating Corey Winfield in four rounds by unanimous decision. Under Caicedo’s direction, the Cuban fighter has won three in a row, all by stoppage, to raise his undefeated record to 10-0.

Acquinity Sports promoter Henry Rivalta and Caicedo believe so much in Hernandez that they want to make a fight with Ruiz. “We know that Andy Ruiz, Jr. is a powerful puncher with an impressive record,” Rivalta commented. “However, Glendy also has power in both hands, and the intense training schedule he’s working has improved his elasticity and movement. With all due respect to Ruiz, who is a great boxer, Glendy’s improvement and overall boxing skills give us confidence in him to challenge Ruiz. This has all of the makings of an excellent fight between two good, fast-rising heavyweight prospects.

“We know that Ruiz, Jr. plans to fight in Macau, China, very soon. I want to let Team Ruiz know Glendy is willing to fight Ruiz, Jr. wherever they want, after or before that fight in China, if they choose. We have no problems with this matter; our boy is ready now to go to war next week if they are ready, even if we need to travel to China to fight him over there.”

Former Lightweight Title Challenger Molina Jr. to Meet Undefeated Lightweight Klimov on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

The June 7 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will feature former Lightweight world- title challenger “The Gladiator” John Molina Jr. (25-2, 20 KOs) and undefeated Lightweight Andrey Klimov (15-0, 8 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Friday’s show from the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Wash., will air live at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN. Friday’s card is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions.

Commentators:
Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will be ringside describing the action for ESPN2 HD, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will provide the latest boxing news and look back at the best of Friday Night Fights from the month of May. Pablo Viruega and Delvin Rodriguez will call this week’s fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Claudia Trejos and Leopoldo Gonzalez in the studio. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn) will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Main Event:
California’s Molina, who is trained by former Jr. Lightweight titlist Robert Garcia, is coming off a January fourth-round knockout win over Dannie Williams.

“We took care of Dannie Williams now we’ve got to take care of Klimov,” Molina said. “I’ve done my studying of him. He’s a tough cat, undefeated. We’re going to have to take it from him, and we’re training for such. Klimov has a very European style, herky-jerky. But I’ve watched him on several occasions and the one punch he throws very well – he sneaks that right uppercut underneath you where you don’t see it. I’ve got to watch that, because I’ve been caught by that punch before. But now that I’ve got it in my head that he’ll be throwing that punch, I’ll be watching out for it.”

Russia’s Klimov scored a March seventh-round technical decision win over Matias Gomez in his last fight.

Klimov said through an interpreter, “I’m a technical boxer. Molina is a fighter with a lot of professional experience, with very hard punching power, but I’m probably the best guy he’s ever fought.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s 10-round co-feature will pit Super Middleweights Farah “Quiet Storm” Ennis (20-1, 12 KOs) of Philadelphia against North Carolina’s Tony “The Tyger” Hanshaw (23-2-2, 14 KOs). Ennis scored a 10-round unanimous win over Richard Pierson in his last fight, while Hanshaw will look to get back to his winning ways following a 10-round draw against Derek Edwards.

PETER MCDONAGH AIMS TO BE “THE CINDERELLA MAN” JUNE 8TH, GLOW, BLUEWATER, LIVE FROM 9.30PM ON CHANNEL 5

London (5 June) Peter McDonagh aims to be the “Cinderella man” and feels he is now at the “peak” of his career.

The 35-year-old former BBBofC Southern Area lightweight and Irish lightweight champion believes he can now “show off” his boxing skills and aim at a European title shot.

“I’ve had a hard career and people know me now as a fighter, respect me as a fighter, I’ve paid my dues and I deserve my chance,” McDonagh said.

“I’ve boxed all over the world and if I can put on a good performance maybe Mick Hennessy can get me something else and you never know – I’m going to be the Cinderella man.”

McDonagh, 35, has a record of 18 wins with two knockouts and 28 losses with only two knockouts, but feels that being the home fighter will give him the right platform to move forward with his career.

“I’ve boxed every style you can box and nothing fazes me and the greatest thing I’ve got is a great chin, so I’ll always be in a great fight,” McDonagh said.

“I just cant wait, I believe now that I can show all my skills off – I’m stronger, more mature, a fully fledged man now and I feel like I’m at the peak of my career.

“The first thing I’m looking for is an Irish title fight, that sticks me in the top 10 in Europe and then I’ll be looking closely at Lenny Daws against Michele Di Rocco for the European title – I’ve boxed Di Rocco before and thought I nicked it in Italy against him.

“I want to look beyond winning an Irish title, I’ve been Irish champion, I want to be Irish champion again and then maybe a European title shot or something.”

Born in Galway, Ireland, McDonagh of Bermondsey, London, fights on the James DeGale undercard at Glow, Bluewater, on Saturday 8th June.

The Hennessy Sports show, live on Channel 5 in the UK from 9.30pm and on Wealth TV in the US, features WBC Silver super-middleweight champion James DeGale defending his title against Croatian fighter Stjepan Bozic.

It also features unbeaten WBC International super-bantamweight champion Kid Galahad, son of the legend, middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Jr in his 10th professional fight and the World Youth super-heavyweight champion Hughie Fury in his fifth professional contest.

‘Tank’ returns to spoil Football player’s boxing dream

KEY WEST, Fla. (June 5, 2013) – The incomparable Sherman “Tank” Williams has taken his act across the country to Carson, California for Saturday night’s eight round fight against former professional football player Gerald Washington (7-0, 5 KOs), at Home Depot Center.

Williams-Washington is on the undercard of a Golden Boy Promotions event, headlined by a major fight between Marcus Maidana and Joselito Lopez, which is airing on Showtime Championship Boxing.

A year ago, Williams (35-12-2, 19 KOs), a bonafide Bahamian sports legend, traveled halfway around the world to Macau, China to defeat Chauncy “Hillyard Hammer”Welliver (53-5-5, 20 KOs) for the WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Asian Boxing Council Championships. Williams’ last fight was a loss by decision last November to undefeated heavyweight contender Robert Helenius (17-0) in Finland.

The 40-year-old Williams has an overwhelming advantage in experience over the 31-year-old Washington in terms of professional fights (50 to 7), rounds fought (280-19), and quality opponents (Williams has fought world champions Evander Holyfield, Ruslan Chagaev and Al Cole, as well as contenders Manuel Charr and Jameel McCline.). “He must feel that he has the goods to beat me,” Williams said. “Fight night I will unleash ‘Tank’ in the ring. I’m happy and confident in myself. I’m focused on this fight and taking care of business. I’m bringing the ‘Conch Punch’ (overhand right) but I won’t throw it too much because my opponent will start holding if I throw it out of proportion.

“I’m coming to fight, like I always do. I’m going to do my thing, fighting on guts and determination. I’m not sure if he boxed a lot before his football career, but he’s an athlete like me, and I respect him for that. He’s big (6′ 5″ and 240+ pounds) but I’ve fought a lot of big guys during my career.”

A certified chef and ordained minister, Williams has seen it all in boxing during his up-and-down pro career, spanning 16 years. “Boxing has turned my life around,” Williams explained. “I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly, but boxing has been good to me. It saved my life because I was on a destructive path when I was young. All I did at 17 was play rugby and get into fights. I’ve travelled the world and have a different perspective on life because of boxing.

“I’ve kept myself in good shape and I have a lot left. This will be my fourth fight with (two-time world champion) John David Jackson as my head trainer. We have a good relationship. He’s realistic, not about ego, and that’s because he’s done it (fought professionally) himself. I also had two other world champion fighters, Eddie Mustapha Muhammad and ‘Buddy’ McGirt, as my trainer in the past. We have good chemistry. John David and I are both students of the game, very knowledgeable, and we often have great boxing conversations.”

Williams’ manager, Si Stern (SHS Management), appreciates “Tank” and firmly believes in him. “I really believe that, not only will ‘Tank’ win this fight, he’s going to take him apart. They aren’t in the same class and he’s never fought anybody like Sherman. ‘Tank’ is a helluva fighter, tough as they come, and that’s why none of the top rated heavyweights want to fight him. People saw what he was doing to Holyfield before he quit. John David told me Sherman is in the best shape of his life.”

Wilson upsets Santos

Another of Stern’s fighter, Derrick Wilson, resurrected his career by pulling off a major upset last Saturday night in the main event on a show in Sunrise, Florida. Wilson (10-4-2, 3 KOs) dropped previously undefeated featherweight Braulio Santos (10-1, 9 KOs) in the ninth round en route to a win by unanimous 10-round decision (96-93, 96-93, 95-94).

Menard Defends UBO World Title, Scott Fights For All-America Belt

Universal Boxing Organization™ World Lightweight Champion “Rock Hard Mighty” Mason Menard (24-1, 17 KOs) is set to make the second defense of his title on June 28 at the Cypress Bayou Casino in Charenton, Louisiana.

24-year-old Menard, who won the title by stopping highly-ranked Ghanaian Joseph Laryea and retained it with a unanimous decision over Lonnie Smith, will take on David “El Torrito” Torres (21-3-2, 13 KOs), on a show promoted by BoxnCar Promotions.

Torres is a former NABA Super Lightweight Champion and has been in with some big names. His three losses came to former world champion Julio Diaz and top-contenders Reymundo Beltran and Ruslan Provodnikov.

The co-feature on the show will have undefeated Baton Rouge Middleweight Travis Scott (14-0, 3 KOs) going for his first title when he squares off with Texan Joey Dunmoodie (5-2-2, 2 KOs) for the vacant UBO All-America Middleweight crown.

Fort Worth resident Dunmoodie, nicknamed The Panama Flash, will also be entering his first championship bout in the pros, and must be considered the underdog against the more experienced Scott.

A sold-out crowd is expected at the Cypress Bayou, the same venue where Menard won the UBO world title in 2011 and only an hour’s drive from his hometown Rayne. BoxnCar Promotions is working on a solid undercard for what shapes up to be a great night of fights.

SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION DOUBLEHEADER HELPS GET INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME INDUCTION WEEKEND OFF TO A SMASHING START

NEW YORK (June 4, 2013) — For boxing enthusiasts, it doesn’t get better than the International Boxing Hall Of Fame weekend that begins this Friday and runs through Sunday in the small town of Canastota in upstate New York.

Helping celebrate the sports of boxing to kick-start the highly anticipated three-day event will be a ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader live on SHOWTIME® on Friday, June 7 (10 p.m. ET/PT delayed on the West Coast) from the Turning Stone Casino in nearby Verona. Many former and future Hall of Famers may partake in the fights, including one who will be inducted during Sunday’s ceremonies, longtime SHOWTIME ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr., who will work the fights on Friday and will be interviewed ringside on the telecast.

“This is a great setting for a ShoBox show because Canastota is so close to Verona (approximately 10 miles apart),’’ said ShoBox expert analyst and boxing historian Steve Farhood. “Canastota is boxing heaven for fight fans and the Hall of Fame weekend is the greatest weekend of the year for them.’’

In the ShoBox main event, exciting world-ranked junior middleweight knockout specialist Jorge “Destroyer” Melendez (26-2-1, 25 KO’s), of Bayamon, P.R., faces former amateur standout Nick “The Machine Gun” Brinson (14-1-2, 6 KO’s), of Rochester, N.Y., in a 10-round middleweight match. World-ranked Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal (16-0, 8 KO’s), of San Juan, P.R., and Mario “Yayo” Muñoz (13-0-1, 1 NC, 10 KO’s), of Guadalajara, Mexico, clash in a battle of unbeaten bantamweights in the eight round co-feature. The fight card is presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions and H2 Entertainment.

The streaking Melendez is not known for putting in a full night’s work. Only two of his 29 fights have gone the distance, and he has gone more than six full rounds only one time. One of the most prolific knockout artists in boxing today, the 5-foot-11, 24-year-old has won 13 in a row, 12 by knockout, and has not lost since July 2010.

Melendez has registered 10 knockdowns in his last five fights. In his last start the WBO Junior Middleweight Latino champion and current WBO No. 4-ranked contender put the deep and talented 154-pound division on notice, delivering a highlight-reel knockout of Ryan Davis on March 2 in Las Vegas on SHOWTIME EXTREME. Melendez dropped Davis in the third round and finished him with a single right uppercut 13 seconds into the fourth.

Melendez’ four previous bouts went a total of 13 rounds. The only times the aggressive-minded Melendez went the distance came on a four-round draw in his pro debut in May 2007 and on Oct. 29, 2011, when he took a close, unanimous 10-round decision over veteran Eric Mitchell. That was also the last time he failed to score a knockdown.

Like many huge punchers, Melendez is susceptible to a big punch himself. He was stopped in both his defeats – against fighters with sub .500 records. He lost by TKO 6 to Doel Carrisquillo (12-15-1) in July 2010 and by TKO 5 to Clarence Taylor (13-22-4) in July 2009. Melendez went down three times against Taylor.

“The main event features a very exciting fighter from Puerto Rico in Jorge Melendez, exciting not just because he can punch but because he’s an all or nothing fighter,’’ Farhood said. “He’s a puncher in the truest sense; he tries to knock you out with every punch and he is very right-hand happy.

“But his two losses both came by knockout.’’

Melendez will be making his second start this year. He fought four times in 2012 and six times in 2011. This will be his sixth scheduled 10-rounder.

“I’ve been training very hard, knowing that I’m going to a higher level regarding my opponents,’’ said Melendez, who is making his ShoBox debut, third consecutive start in the U,S. and sixth overall in the states. “I’m more of a brawler and a knockout artist. I am not a great technical fighter, but I’m working on my technique.

“I’ve been doing new exercises in training camp and I’m feeling a lot stronger, faster and more fit. I don’t know who my opponent is but we’ll be ready for anything he brings.”

One of nine children, Melendez was born in Manati, P.R., and raised in Vega Baja. He turned to boxing at the age of 12. “I had a lot of problems in the streets when I was growing up, so my grandfather told me I should learn to fight in the ring. That way I wouldn’t get into trouble,’’ said Melendez, who went 42-6 in the amateurs.

Brinson took this fight on a week’s notice, but he’s sharp, been active and never been knocked down. The 5-foot-11, 25-year-old is unbeaten in his last eight outings (7-0-1) since suffering his lone loss in November 2010, and will be making his fourth start this year. The New York State Middleweight Champion, Brinson is coming off a clear 10-round unanimous decision over the more experienced Jose Medina in his last outing on April 25.

Before turning pro at the age of 21 in November 2008, Brinson was a skilled amateur. Among those he beat in his 90-or-so-bout amateur career included Olympians Shawn Estrada and Errol Spence.

“I got the call last Saturday (to fight Melendez),’’ Brinson said. “I wish it was more time – but I’ve been busy. I’ve only been in the gym about a week and a half but I believe in myself, and I believe that I can still do it.’’

Brinson is a substitute for Lanardo Tyner, who was a replacement for Melendez’ original foe, Luis Grajeda.

“I’ve seen Melendez’ record,’’ said Brinson, a fast-handed boxer who possesses good skills and movement. “He must be a decent puncher. I don’t know much about him, I haven’t seen much film, but I imagine he’s going to come forward and try to take me out. I’ll be ready for that. I’ll outbox and out-skill him.

“I’m a great counterpuncher, so I’ll be expecting that.”

Brinson’s lone loss came in his ninth fight on a seventh-round TKO to Lennox Allen. In a good action matchup, Brinson scored a knockdown in the second and Allen was cut over his right eye in the fifth. But Brinson tired and was staggered by a series of punches in the seventh. He was out on his feet when the referee stopped the fight at 2:59.

“I only lost to Lennox Allen because I ran out of stamina,’’ Brinson said. “I should still be undefeated.”

The co-feature matches two up-and-coming 118-pounders in their toughest fights to date. “This is a quintessential ShoBox fight of undefeated prospects, who are both taking leaps in class,’’ Farhood said, “One is from Puerto Rico, the other from Mexico, so we have that great rivalry going.’’

Vidal, a 5-foot-4, 28-year-old, is making his 2013, ShoBox and U.S. debut. This will be the third fight outside Puerto Rico for the WBC’s No. 12-ranked bantamweight, who had one fight in Nicaragua in 2008 and one in the Dominican Republic in 2011. He is coming off a dominant third-round TKO win over Josean “El Tren” Figueroa on Oct. 20, 2012.

“That was a great victory for me,’’ Vidal said. “I felt strong and fast. I look forward to fighting with the best bantamweights. I’m ready for them.”

Vidal, whose idol not surprisingly is Puerto Rican boxing legend Felix “Tito” Trinidad, is an aggressive-minded boxer-puncher. “I want to be smart in the ring, always, cautious,” he said. “But when it’s time to put the pressure on my opponent, I definitely know how to do that.”

In by far his closest encounter, he won an eight-round split decision over Angel Cruz on June 30, 2012. A tight fight was scored 76-75 twice for Vidal and 76-75 for Cruz.

Vidal hails from a fighting family. Two cousins on his mother’s side, brothers Julian (WBA Bantamweight Champion) and Rafael Solis (a super featherweight world title challenger), were top fighters. Vidal went 69-5 in the amateurs before turning pro in November 2007.

Munoz, who’s making his ShoBox debut, has campaigned exclusively in Mexico since turning pro in October 2012. He is 4-0 with one no-contest since boxing a four-round draw with Eduardo Ramirez in October 2011. The 5-foot-7, 22-year-old scored two knockdowns en route to a fifth-round knockout over Cecilio Santos in his last outing on Jan. 19 in Guadalajara. Vidal also fought Santos, winning an eight-round decision in May 2011.

“I’ve been training for this fight for two months in Guadalajara,’’ Munoz said. “I’m an all-around fighter. I have technique. I like to go forward. I think I do a little of everything.

“All I know about my opponent is that he’s a very strong fighter and goes forward, and he gives his all in the ring. I’m training hard to put on a great fight, and I don’t want anybody to miss it.’’

Munoz’ scheduled 10-round fight with Moises Flores on Nov. 10, 2012, ended in a no-contest after Munoz was cut over his left eye by a clash of heads in the fourth round. Several brawls broke out in the audience after the fight was stopped at 1:12.

A three-time national Junior Olympic Champion, Munoz went 140-10 in the amateurs before going pro at the age of 19 in September 2010. He won his initial nine fights before the draw with Ramirez.

Marrero vs. Cuellar in works for WBA Interim Featherweight title

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 4, 2013) — Unbeaten Dominican featherweight Claudio “The Matrix” Marrero (14-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), could face Argentinean Jesus Andres Cuellar (22-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBA interim featherweight title sometime this coming July at a venue to be determined. Acquinity Sports promoter Henry Rivalta reports that negotiations with the Argentine team are close to being finalized.

“We are finalizing details of this fight now and discussions with Sebastian Contursi, Team Cuellar’s representative, indicate that this fight can probably be made for this July,” Rivalta said. “We have yet to determine the precise date and place for this fight, which we understand will feature, face-to-face, two of the top ranked WBA featherweight fighters.

“It’s a pleasure for us at Acquinity Sports to work with someone like Sebastian Contursi. We are sure that we will soon have an agreement. Also, we wish to express our gratitude to advisor Ricardo Rizzo for all the support he has given us to make this fight.

“Jesus Cuellar is a good fighter with a great style and power in both hands. However, Claudio Marrero, in our opinion, is one of the best warriors in the featherweight division. We are confident in his skills to capture another title for our team.”

In only 14 fights, 11 ending in knockouts, Marrera has become one of the most spectacular featherweights in the world. Now, as the top-ranked featherweight in the WBA, he is preparing to fight the No. 5 ranked Cuellar.

The Dominican is confident of reaching his goal to become world champion, saying, “I’m ready to fight the best. These type of fights are what we are looking for to become the best 126-pound fighter. We know that there are some great Argentine fighters at this time – (Sergio) Martinez, (Marcus) Maidana and (Lucas) Matthysse – and that those 3M’s are making a loud noise in professional boxing. With us, though, it’s a different story, but I’m the top ranked contender and I will defend my place when I go up against Cuellar.”

While legal representatives for both fighters are trying to finalize an agreement as soon as possible, Marrero continues his training camp with his coach, German Cicedo, at German Caicedo Gym in Miami. He’s convinced that this fight versus Cuellar is the opportunity he has been waiting for to solidify his name in the featherweight division.

Rebello prepares for final run as he faces another test Friday in front of his home crowd

LINCOLN, R.I. (June 4th, 2013) — On Friday night, Providence native Greg “Ribz” Rebello will enter the cage in front of his hometown fans at Twin River Casino, which, as strange as it seems, will be a welcome change.

The last time he fought back in February, Rebello (15-4, 8 KOs) was the “bad guy,” so to speak, fighting in Maine against an opponent (Jesse Peterson) from nearby Rumford. Rebello silenced the crowd and knocked out the fan-favorite in the second round for his third win in his last four fights.

With two weeks to go before his 31st birthday, Rebello is trying to strike while the iron’s hot. As he prepares to face Williamsport, Pa., veteran Lewis Rumsey (8-8, 4 KOs) on the undercard of Friday’s show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, Rebello is aiming for his fourth win in five fights, which could put him on the brink of a lucrative payday on MMA’s biggest stage.

“My window is starting to close,” Rebello said. “This is pretty much my last run. I’m not one of those old guys who wants to hang out in night clubs when he’s 40. If it’s time to hang it up, I’ll hang it up. This is a young man’s sport, and if I don’t keep winning – and finishing – it’s over.”

The key is “finishing.” Major promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) don’t just want successful fighters; they want exciting, TV-friendly fighters who can finish their opponents via knockout or submission. At the height of his career between 2006 and 2010, Rebello won 11 consecutive fights, but went the distance six times during that stretch.

“That does nothing for me,” Rebello said. “The bigger companies want guys who dominate on the local level, because when you get to the next level, everyone is good. It’s like playing junior hockey. The competition is much stronger. That’s why you need to dominate.”

Rebello will have his hands full with Rumsey, a former high school wrestler who has won seven out of 10 fights since changing his training regimen three years ago.

“I feel like I’m on a 10-fight winning streak,” Rumsey said. “I’ve had my ups and downs, but I feel confident.”

After losing five of his first six fights, Rumsey began traveling throughout the country training at different gyms, including Greg Jackson’s facility in Albuquerque, N.M., where we worked with UFC vets Carlos Condit and Jon Jones, the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion.

“I like to pick up little things from everybody,” Rumsey said. “The most important thing I’ve learned is to stay relaxed. I can’t go into every fight balls to the wall. I have to act like it’s a training session. That’s what they told me [in New Mexico] – just stay relaxed and have fun.”

Since then, Rumsey has scored four knockout wins in the last two years and appeared on the Bellator Fighting Championships, but Rebello is unimpressed with his opponent’s resume.

“He’s a tough guy, but he hasn’t fought anybody,” Rebello said. “He goes on interviews saying he can fight the best in the world, but he’s 8-8. He has a weird style, so a lot of people don’t know what to do when they face him. He throws these wild Jeet Kune Do [JKD] kicks. I know how to fight guys like that because I train with a lot of them. Most people who beat him take him to the ground.”

Asked about Rumsey’s wrestling background – he wrestled at the high-school level and stopped before he enrolled in college – Rebello said, “That’s not a wrestling background. I just have to try to avoid getting hit by one of those kicks.”

The biggest change for Rebello this time around will be fighting in front of his home crowd, though, in some ways, Rebello doesn’t mind being the enemy on the road.

“In that last fight, the thing was this guy had everyone cheering for him, so all the pressure was on him,” Rebello said. “Either way, I’ve had so many fights in my career, so it doesn’t affect me. I’m not here to impress my friends or sell T-shirts. I’m not in it for that.

“This is pretty much it for me,” he added. “I’m trying to get to the UFC or Bellator. It’s now or never.”

Tickets for “New Blood” are $36.00, $56.00, $101.00 and $126.00 and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

The undercard includes several regional matchups and intra-state showdowns, including the return of Bridgewater, Mass., welterweight and former The Ultimate Fighter reality television series standout Chuck “Cold Steel” O’Neil (10-5, 2 KOs), who will look to build off his win over Rhode Island’s Keith Jeffrey in December when he faces Andrew Osborn (6-5, 1 KO) of Fayetteville, N.C.

One of the best intra-state showdowns will take place between East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate “The Snake” Andrews (4-0, 2 KOs) and Lincoln veteran Jeff “Candyman” Anderson (11-7, 2 KOs). Andrews has risen considerably in the past year with wins in each of his first four fights, but has yet to face anyone as experienced and as tough as Anderson; known for fighting the best opposition in the northeast, Anderson has wins over Damien Trites, John Ortolani and Pete Jeffrey on his resume, but has lost three consecutive bouts, albeit against Mike Campbell, Matt Bessette and Saul Almeida, who have combined for 36 wins.

“New Blood” also features four exciting bantamweight bouts, highlighted by the showdown between Andre Soukhamthath (4-1, 3 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I., and Blair Tugman (5-4) of Branford, Conn. Soukhamthath has won four consecutive fights since losing his debut while Tugman is returning to the cage for the first time since April of 2011, when he lost to John McLaughlin at the Bellator Fighting Championships.

Also in the bantamweight division, highly-touted amateur Sophanarith Am will make his professional debut Carlos Hernandez of Lynn, Mass., and Providence veteran Joe Reverdes (1-2) – fighting for the first time since August – will fight Williamsport’s Joshua Aarons (1-6). In what could be one of the best fights on the undercard, veterans Pedro Gonzalez (7-5) of Rockport, Mass., and Sidemar Honario (8-3, 2 KOs) will square off in a three-round bantamweight bout.

Providence welterweight Ruben Ortiz will make his highly-anticipated debut against fellow newcomer Brian Sparrow of Sandwich, Mass., and Eric Spicely (1-0) of Providence will take on newcomer Tundee Oduyingho of Johnston, R.I., in a welterweight bout. Coventry, R.I., featherweight Shaun Marmas (5-4) will also be featured in a separate bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “New Blood.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must enter through the West entrance).

KOVALEV AIMS TO KEEP KO STREAK ALIVE ON JUNE 14 NBC SPORTS NETWORK FIGHT NIGHT

BETHLEHEM, PA – Unbeaten Russian KO king Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 20-0-1, 18 KOs, not only has his sights set on Cornelius “Da Beast” White, 21-1, 16 KOs, in their upcoming 12-round title elimination bout on June 14th, at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA. The fast-rising light heavyweight contender is also aiming to keep his impressive knockout streak alive when he meets White in the nationally televised match.

The fight is part of a big boxing triple header to be televised live by NBC Sports Network on the next edition of Fight Night. Also on the bill is a 10-round heavyweight bout between Bryant Jennings, 16-0, 8 KOs, and Andrey Fedosov, 24-2, 19 KOs, and a 10-round welterweight battle between Ronald Cruz, 17-1, 12 KOs, and Ray Narh, 25-2, 21 KOs. The broadcast begins at 8PM ET.

Kovalev has made quite a name for himself over the past year with a collection of showy KOs that have not only disposed of top-shelf opponents and attracted many fans, Krusher’s big knockouts have also pushed him up the 175-pound rankings at a speedy pace. One more win on June 14th, and Kovalev will be so close to title shot that he’ll be able to taste it. And what better way to win the critical bout than with another knockout.

Undefeated, Kovalev has dispatched eight of his last nine opponents by KO.

In his last outing, Kovalev destroyed former world champion Gabriel Campillo in just three rounds on another Fight Night program. The skilled Campillo could not keep the raging Russian off him, suffering three knockdowns before the fight was stopped. Kovalev may have been favored to win the bout, but no one expected such a dominant performance.

Prior to that, Kovalev halted Buffalo’s Lionell Thompson in just three rounds on Fight Night last September. Sergey dropped Thompson twice in the second round and finished the job by sending Thompson on another trip to the canvas just 14 seconds into round three.

Although there were others who recently wilted under Kovalev’s artillery, it is these two fights that carved Sergey’s reputation as a dangerous puncher and a true title threat. But like any fighter in the spotlight, you’re only as good as your last fight. So the pressure is on Kovalev to put his heavy hands to use and continue to exceed expectations by sending opponents home early.

Sergey’s latest opportunity to make another statement comes on June 14th, and Cornelius White is the next man on the Kovalev hit list. After this 12-round elimination fight the winner becomes the No. 1 challenger for the IBF crown, currently held by Bernard Hopkins, of Philadelphia, PA. With so much at stake fans can be sure to expect an explosive battle.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® VIDEO EXTRA: ALFREDO ANGULO COMEBACK CONTINUES

Pubic workout ahead of Huck vs. Afolabi – Wegner: “We will keep the belt in Berlin!”

Champion and challenger are ready for war on June 8! Saturday night will see Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) take on Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) for the third time. After winning their first matchup and drawing the second, the current WBO Cruiserweight Champion is hoping to close the chapter Afolabi once and for all, when they square off at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany. During today´s public workout both fighters made it clear, that their confidence is sky high ahead of the big fight.

The first one to show off his set of skills was Afolabi. After some rope skipping and hitting the pads with his coach Fritz Sdunek he addressed the media in attendance. “Fritz Sdunek got me into the best shape of my life. So far ahead of every fight, I was either physical or mentally fit. However, this time round, I have hit top form in both aspects. Now, I am the total package!” Sdunek agreed with his prodigy. “Under my guidance, Ola learned the meaning of discipline. That will make the difference come Saturday.“

Next to step into the ring was the champion himself. And although this was just a workout session, Huck made it obvious that he was not messing around. The punches connecting with the pads held by his coach Ulli Wegner seemed to be meant as a message to the watching Afolabi. “I hope he understood what I was doing there. Afolabi will get to feel the best combinations inside the ring on Saturday,” said the 28-year-old. Ulli Wegner got straight to the point. “We will keep the belt in Berlin!”

Also showing off some of their abilities where light heavyweights Robert Woge (11-0, 10 KOs) and Eduard Gutknecht (24-2, 9 KOs) who will also be competing for international honors in the main support on June 8.

Khan to move up to Welterweight and eyes Alexander clash

Amir Khan
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former two-division world champion Amir Khan will now compete as a Welterweight and will look to face IBF champion Devin Alexander later this year.

“I think I’ll be a lot more comfortable at 147,” Khan told ESPN.com. “I’ve been struggling to make the weight. I’ve been at 140 for a long time (since mid-2009). So I’ll be looking to fight at 147.”

“I’ll be a lot stronger at 147, a lot more confident,” Khan said. “Look at guys like (lightweight titlist) Adrien Broner and (Robert) Guerrero. They moved up two weight classes and fought for world titles and you see their confidence. You can do a lot more in training. You can build your strength and not always be worried about the weight. I think I’ll have a lot more power.”

“There is a possibility that the Khan fight might be in Dubai,” said Golden Boy Promotions Rich Schaefer, regardless of who Khan might fight in December. “But the fight is not done and I am working on different things. We will not know about Dubai until sometime in August.

“If your goal is to fight Floyd at some point, obviously, the action is at 147 and you might as well go up and introduce yourself in that weight class, where he could actually be stronger at the higher weight,” Schaefer said. “Amir feels that will be the case with him. He won’t have to worry about making weight so much and he can focus on training. He is excited to move up to 147. He realizes there are tremendous opportunities.”

“(Golden Boy matchmaker) Robert (Diaz) saw at the weigh-in that he was dry and asked if he had a problem making the weight,” Schaefer said. “He was at 149, 148 (in the days leading up to the fight) and to get down, those last few pounds usually come off easy. But this time he had more of a difficult time getting them off. Robert noticed that and felt like he didn’t look like he usually does. He’s been at 140 since 2007, so obviously it’s time for him to move up.

“Nobody says those rematches can’t happen at 147,” Schaefer said. “Those are great fights and it won’t matter if they are at 140 or 147. People will still want to see them.”

“Part of my punch resistance is due to my weight,” Khan said. “Sometimes you need that extra little bit (of weight) to take that punch. If you’re not making weight properly, you’re not going to take the punches as well. (Trainer) Virgil (Hunter) has seen me spar at 147. I talked to Virgil about moving up and he said, ‘Who you looking to fight?’ I said, ‘Alexander.’ He said, ‘That’s a good fight.'”

“When we are young the dream is to be world champion and now the dream is to fight and beat Floyd Mayweather,” Khan said. “Once you beat Floyd Mayweather you become pound-for-pound and that’s what everyone aims for. But you have to be in that weight division to be noticed. Everywhere I’ve been going people ask me when I’m fighting Floyd. Maybe I got knocked out or didn’t perform well in some fights, but my style would be exciting to watch against him.

“He has five fights left. Five more opponents. Who brings him money, excitement, recognition and global recognition? I’ve been in the U.K., the European, American and Middle Eastern markets. He’ll make a lot of money with Canelo Alvarez, but I can’t think of any other boxer with as big of a following or pull that I have that he can make a fight with.”

Top Rank signs Japanese Gold Medal Winner Ryota Murata

According tp Dan Rafael of espn.com, Top Rank has signed 2012 Japanese Gold Medal winner Ryoa Murata.

Murata will campaign as a Moiddleweight

“He’s an exciting fighter and the people that know say he is ready for the professionals,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. “He fought like a professional when he was an amateur. He had that pro style. He’s a banger.

“The way it looks and the way we evaluated him is that within a relatively short period of time he will be able to fight [top middleweights] like [Sergio] Martinez, [Gennady] Golovkin and [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. Sure, he needs some seasoning but in maybe year and half he could be ready to fight for a world title. He’s a cut above most young fighters.”

“He’s probably one of the most popular athletes in Japan right now after winning the gold medal,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “That was one of the things we looked at. His popularity is huge and that is very compelling for us. We believe boxing is a global product, so we will look at all boxers from all ends of the world and if it makes sense to sign somebody, and we believe in them, that is what we will do.

“He is a good looking guy, he’s big, he’s physical the way he fights and he speaks a little bit of English already.”

Her vengeance unassured

She sets her left foot slightly in front of her right and tries to keep them a shoulders’ width apart, whatever that means, and counts her punches as they leave her shoulder instead of listening for them like her brother does. They don’t sound much but remind her others might be listening, listening and watching.

“How many rounds you got left on the bag?” a guy in a yellow Under Armour shirt asks, and he looks away as she answers.

“Two?” she says, and he walks away. “Coach said I could –”

“Whatever, it’s cool,” he says. “That’s the lucky bag. There are others. As you were.”

Impersonal questions feel like achievements and feel good to answer as nobody. Hers is a morbid futility, more than her other morbidity, because nothing about her new regimen is hopeful to anyone but her, or perhaps not her either, and certainly to no one who does not know what fuel she finds in betrayal, timeless betrayal, and the timelessness of betrayal’s catalyzing force.

It was fuel enough to fuel her intake of fuel till she weighed quite nearly 400 pounds or maybe more had there been a scale available to mark her, but there wasn’t, so her brother, moved back to mom’s by a disgruntled ex, used their mechanical scale and marked how far beneath the dial’s last score, 290 in bold black, she spun the red metal needle, and it was probably 103 but as he knew his sister was unable to see beneath herself, and as he wanted her to find momentum during the first month when anything done with her body might shrink it, he told her it was 110, which weighed her a symmetrical 400 pounds. It invested her first week with the hope of a 10-pound loss, one miraculous enough to return anyone for a month to the lunglike haze of the city gym where an amateur program thrives even as the city’s retired champion gets the kids when they turn pro.

She knows the guys at the gym who didn’t know her family thought her younger brother, born in 1996 and only three years her junior, was actually her son, so different were their appearances, so ageing was the flesh that made the distinguishing contours of her brown face float between her forehead and chin like the yolk of a fried egg, she was too aware, but she appreciated their treating her like nobody after the first shocked glances and customary leers. No cruelty, despite their cruel ages. That was a gentle surprise till her brother explained the code of truthtelling required once a person slipped beneath the delimiting bungee cord that separated the gym’s spectators from boxers: “Be honest, if you’re going to fight anyway.”

A year of eating after the guy nobody believed was interested in her was interested in her for a week, long enough to get it, and then uninterested as everyone imagined him, what few people knew they were together at all – and those few included her mother, who surely knew the tally when he came to retrieve her daughter for their date but didn’t caution her daughter because she wanted experience and that had to begin with an experience.

Now her mother wonders at the silence she showed the events of that week, and the 51 that followed as she sat on their sofa and said only cursorily encouraging things, as she sits in the spectator area and sees her daughter’s want of coordination and oxygen, exerting on the heavybag in an awful impression of the gym’s better athletes, brokenwrist slaps beneath an uneven face of coffee grounds sprinkled on sandpaper and splotched now with a fire-engine red, angry as her new gloves, ones her mother bought at the secondhand store as a reward for her daughter’s initiative in losing a miraculous 11 pounds that first week in the gym when her daughter wore the same black sweatpants and black cotton shirt from Wal-Mart, where they stocked XXXXL in the men’s section, five days in a row, walking each night to the laundry room of the small Southtown apartment complex with a roll of quarters her mother bought on her lunchbreak that Monday to ensure no foreseeable obstacle lay on her daughter’s path.

She swats the bag with hapless hooks, knocking on a door hung sideways, and fixates on her hunger, on the enormously empty sensation and impossibility of what one reward could reliably compensate for the acid now in her shoulders and wrists, and the cramps on the bottoms of her feet caused by tennis sneakers, from a smaller time and biting mad about it. She tries to count her breaths like she heard an old guy say to one of the pros, something about getting him with a hook on the inhale, whatever that could mean.

Her brother helps pull the stiff gloves off her small hands, and she replaces them, squeaking, in their black mesh packaging then unwinds her stretchy pink wraps and drops them in a small gearbag from her brother. She turns three quarters of the way from the bench and sidles to her mother, her ride, in the spectator area, careful not to face the enormous shadowboxing mirror opposite the bench where her brother put the gearbag. Her mother shows stoicism instead of bubbly encouragement, as her son exhorted, but still quietly tells her daughter at this rate she can’t imagine where she’ll be in a month, and the thought stops there because neither is sure she’ll return tomorrow.

Isiah Thomas targets top Light heavyweights in world

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 3, 2013) — Undefeated contender Isiah “The Piston” Thomas (12-0. 6 KO’s), rated No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), has targeted the top heavyweights in the world.

“I am ready to face any of the top heavyweights in the world, when and wherever they want to fight,” said the 24-year-old southpaw from Detroit.

The 6′ 4″ Thomas has exceptionally fast hands, good foot work and numbing power in both hands. He has fought mostly in the cruiserweight division, registering six knockouts in his 12 professional fights to date. After signing a promotional deal with Acquinity Sports in 2012, Thomas made his Acquinity Sports debut on July 21, 2012, knocking out Reggie Pena in the second round of their fight at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Last September, Thomas won a lopsided six-round unanimous decision (60-51 three times) over Mexican Ricardo Campillo, followed in October by a fight in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in which Thomas stopped Junior Ramos in the third round.

Two months later in “Beatdown 2012” at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, Thomas was matched against the much more experienced former world champion, Richard Hall. Thomas won a unanimous 10-round decision for the interim WBA Fedelatin cruiserweight title, and his impressive performance earned him a spot in the WBA rankings.

Thomas is confident that a victory against a world-class opponent would elevate him into the WBA’s top five.

“I’m ready to take on any of the top 175-pounders,” Thomas noted. “Most of my fights have been as a cruiserweight but light heavyweight is my natural weight class. I want to measure myself against the best to prove I belong at that elite level. We give all our potential opponents great respect, but I want to emphasize that I fear nobody.”

Acquinity Sports promoter Henry Rivalta added, “Isiah is ready, no questions at all, for any of the top light heavyweights in the world. We’re prepared to make a deal if anybody is willing to step up to the plate and fight Isiah.”

Go online to www.AcquinitySports.com for additional information about Thomas or any of his Acquinity Sports stable-mates. Follow Acquinity Sports on Twitter @AcquinitySports, or friend us at Facebook.com/AcquinitySports.

Quinton McCottrell and Tiawan Howard to Meet in Rocktagon XXVII Headliner

Las Vegas – June 3, 2013 It’ll be some good, old-fashioned home cooking for Cleveland’s Tiawan “The Iron Dragon” Howard when he competes in his home state of Ohio against Quinton McCottrell in the main event of Rocktagon XXVII “Way of the Warrior.”

The backdrop for this bout is like something made out of a Hollywood movie.

Howard, who is coming off a loss, has a rare opportunity to bounce back in the featured spot of an important fight card in front of his family and friends. McCottrell, on the other hand, looks to play the lone ranger who spoils the homecoming.

Despite past inconsistencies, Howard has shown promise throughout his MMA tenure, and it would be foolish to assume he couldn’t rise to the occasion once more. A fight in familiar stomping grounds in Ohio may be just what the doctor ordered for this Bellator and ShoXC veteran.

It won’t be easy dealing with the red-hot McCottrell, who was riding a two-fight win streak, including a highly impressive submission win over Kevin Morris at King of the Cage in April, before losing a decision last week in Indiana.

Like Howard, McCottrell has shown the ability to finish the fight anywhere. Fans can expect a well-rounded battle between two savvy veterans looking to put on an exciting show and climb the MMA ranks.

Rocktagon XXVII “Way of the Warrior” comes to you live on June 15 at the UAW Event Center (#1005), located at 5615 Chevrolet Blvd in Cleveland, Ohio. Doors open at 6:00 pm with fights starting at 7:00 pm. Tickets starting at $35 are available online at www.RocktagonMMA.com, or in person at participating Discount Drug Mart locations. Limited VIP tables are also available by calling 440-934-4MMA.

Founded in mid-2010, Rocktagon MMA has successfully completed 26 events on two coasts and is the only promotion able to offer four types of shows to meet the needs of various markets: all Amateur, all Professional, Pro-Am, and Rock-n-Rage. Rock-n-Rages are premium events combining the cage of mixed martial arts with a stage featuring live musical performances by well-known artists. All Rocktagon MMA events are streamed live globally and filmed to air on multiple networks throughout North America, including Comcast, Comcast SportsNet, and the Fight Network.

Rocktagon XXVI is the promotion’s last pro-am event before the launch of their all-pro national tour.

Woge takes on Sek in first title defense

Another title fight added to this weekend’s fight card in Berlin! Robert Woge (11-0, 10 KOs) takes on Dariusz Sek (19-0-1, 7 KOs) as the main support to the WBO Cruiserweight Championship between Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs). The fight against the currently unbeaten southpaw will be a special one for the German. For the first time ever in his professional career, Woge will step into the ring as the defending champion and put his IBF Intercontinental Title on the line.

Woge captured the belt at the very same place where he will make his premiere defense. February 2 saw the 29-year-old win a real battle against Hakim Zoulikha at the arena in the east of Berlin. “That was pretty exciting back in February. Zoulikha caught me with a shot to my left ear in round one, which resulted in an injury to the eardrum. I battled through the pain and finished him off in round eleven”, said Woge. “The fans ringside were pushing me and I kept going. It was a huge relieve when I landed that devastating shot to knock him out. I was absolutely over the moon. “

Of course, the prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner is hoping for a replicate of his previous performance at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. However, it will not be an easy task against Dariusz Sek. The 26-year-old challenger is just like the champion still undefeated as a professional. So far, he has stepped into the ring on 20 occasions, almost twice as often as Woge. Therefore, the German knows that he has a real challenge at hand. “Sek is younger than me, but he has gained a lot of experience over the course of four years since turning pro and he still has to taste defeat. These type of guys are tough to crack. I am looking forward to this challenge.”

The fact that the Pole is a southpaw does not bother Woge in the slightest. “I fought southpaws before and I am still unbeaten. I can promise one thing: it will most definitely be another exciting fight – I am known for being entertaining.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany, on June 8 are available at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

Derrick Wilson digs deep and upsets Brualio Santos as Golden Boy rocks South Florida

Boxing was back at the BB&T tonight with the second installment of Golden Boy Boxing at the BB&T Center in Sunrise Florida. This card was stacked with excellent young Golden Boy talent who all were matched with fierce competitors, … well with the exception of one disgraceful “fighter” with loose screws.

The main event showcased featherweights Brualio Santos and Derrick Wilson clash who excited the crowd with a very entertaining, hard punching, close encounters all action brawl. The two warriors answered the opening bell with big power punches and great skilled technique boxing and continued until the final bell. The early rounds found the two tactfully exchanging heavy short combinations and sharp accurate punches. Santos dug with deep body shots and short punches while Wilson used his excellent athletic skills to counter punching the hard charging Puerto Rican. The action persisted through the middle rounds with both fighters throwing heavyweight thumping punches… Santos kept his steady attack however as the fight grew Wilson started settling in with his timing and blocking the hard punches thrown by Santos. The final rounds kept tempo and were very close, with Wilson doing just a little bit more each round. Round 9 Wilson landed a great right hand to the temple that put Santos down to the delight of the crowd. Santos quickly made it to his feet and back into action and the two went back to exchanging power punches. Going into the final round I had Wilson up by two points, the final round was a bit of a chess match where both fighters looked in great shape to finish strong and close. I scored the fight 96-95 for Wilson. The final cards read 96-93 twice and 96-94.

Light middleweight Daquan Arnett 11-0(7KO) kept his 0 intact with a sensational made for highlights knockout over hard charging Hector Zuniga 10-2(7KO) who was fighting of Tijuana Mexico. Arnett showed his superior boxing skills and defense. He was sharp with his counter punches and kept Zuniga off of him, when the Mexican was able to catch him on the ropes he was gifted with a few nice shots. The knockout sequence was awesome bringing the sparsely crowded BB&T center to a roar, one would think it was a packed house. The two combatants were exchanging along the ropes when Arnett connected with a left hood, followed by another, and yet another at which time Zuniga shook his head and waved Arnett in for more, a split second later Arnett unloaded a fourth and final left hook that dropped the Mexican like a hot tamale. Arnett barely beat the count but the towel from the Mexicans corner did not as they saved their beaten fighter. The end came at 1:37 of the fifth.

Jamall “The Hitman” Charlo 14-0(10KO) had someone special watching him tonight, the original Hitman, Thomas Hearns was ringside to watching the action. The new aged Hitman did not disappoint as he crushed 39 Ecuadorian journeyman Luis Hernandez 21-6(14KO) dropping him twice in the second round. Officially scored a TKO2 at 2:26

Local favorite Steve Geffrard got off the canvas in round one and put together a nice comeback in an entertaining and tough fight for the former amateur national champion and Boca Raton native. Travis Reeves 1-1-1 ripped a big left hook that dropped Geffrard in round one Round two was very close as Geffrard got a lead later in the round which made it very hard to score. Rounds three and four was in favor of the hard hitting Geffard who found comfort in a shelled inside affair with the Baltimore based Reeves who was happy to trade shot for shot with the taller Geffrard. Each fighter caught each other during inside pot-shotting action with very close rounds three and fourth that seemed to favor Geffrard. A deflated Geffard fell to the ground when the final decision was announced in favor of the underdog, Reeves. Two judges saw the fight 38-37 for Reeves and the other 38-37 for Geffrard

2012 United States Olympian Errol Spence 6-0(5KO) from Dallas TX made quick work of Guillermo Ibarra 11-4(7KO) fighting out of Mexico. Spence landed a nice left to the head that dispensed the Mexican to the floor and out at 1:33 of round one. Spence has gotten a nice start since he entered the pro ranks in November of last year.

Highly touted amateur and “dream team” fighter Justin DeLoach 3-0(2KO) made quick and almost comical work of shamefully licensed Jonathan Olivera who looked as if he had just started boxing this morning. Honestly one of, if not the most embarrassing fighters I have ever seen, next to “Worst Boxer in the History of the World …epic mullet!!!” who entertains on YouTube, and obviously used Mullets “Cat Technique” Which was embarrassingly ineffective. I am certain once this hits YouTube it will be a rival. Just a shameful performance by Olivera, and shame on the commission and his team and corner for putting this kid in the ring in the ring with a fighter who could have killed him. This kid didn’t even look like an amateur. I understand he was a late replacement and I truly believe he was literally a last minute replacement and traded his seat for a corner stool.

Fort Lauderdales Travis Castellon 1-0(1KO) kick started his professional career and the evening with an exciting round that got the rain soaked crowd off to an upbeat start. The southpaw Castellon met Orlando’s Will Fauth 0-1-1 mid ring a second after the opening bell meaning business. The two threw early heavy punch and a clash of heads midway through the first stanza caused an ugly bump on the head of Fauth who then pressured the former amatuer standout Castellon into a corner and caught the young pugilist with his first hard professional punches. In a show of true heart that corner worked seemed to ignite the young pro who then found his distance and landed some great shots including a perfect uppercut at the bell. Between rounds Dr. Allen Fields advised the Fauth corner to cease the action. As a result Castellon earns a TKO in his debut and the BB&T Center gets an awesome appetizer to kick the night off.

Chris “SugarBoy” Valez improved to 5-0-1(3KO) by prowling and landing clean shots almost at will on tough as nails Jose Segura in a bloody welterweight affair. Valez looked sharp throughout the bout picking his shots. The cards read 40-36 for Valez who remained undefeated.

EBU names Pulev “Champion of the Year”!

Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs) is EBU’s “Champion of the Year”. The European Boxing Union honored its heavyweight champion due to his dominant outings inside the ring during 2012, bringing him close to a world title shot in the not so distant future. The prestigious award was presented to the 32-year-old at the Union´s annual general meeting this Saturday, which is currently held in Vienna, Austria.

“I am very happy to receive this award,” said Pulev who was present. “The EBU is a long-standing and renowned association and I am proud to be its heavyweight champion.”

Pulev caught the eye of many boxing fans and experts last year with his emphatic victories over Alexander Dimitrenko and Alexander Ustinov, beating both by knockout in the eleventh round. He won the European Heavyweight Championship against Dimitrenko in May 2012, followed by his first title-defense in September against Ustinov.

“I know that I can only show my best inside the ring when I am well prepared,” stated the prodigy of coach Otto Ramin. “As a European Champion I have to set high standards to myself. I am always giving my best – in preparation as well as on fight night.”

Due to his professional attitude, Pulev has already managed to work his way up in the rankings of the IBF, currently holding its number one spot – right behind the Federation´s champion Wladimir Klitschko. His next goal is clear: “After having conquered Europe, it is time to become the heavyweight champion of the world!”
