LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez is moving up scale. Saturday it’s a bid for a light-heavyweight title held by Dmitry Bivol.

Then, there’s some business to finish with Gennadiy Golovkin in a third fight projected for September.

After that, he and his current promoter, Eddie Hearn, are talking about a unified title at 175 pounds, perhaps against Artur Beterbiev in May 2023.

He continues to talk about a fight at cruiserweight. Welterweight champion Errol Spence was mentioned for a date at a catch weight. Now, there’s even some wild talk about a move to heavyweight against Oleksandr Usyk.

A lot of names are mentioned, all there like milestones on the path to what Canelo calls history. There are no apparent limits to what Canelo hopes to do. Bivol might change that at T-Mobile Arena in a pay-per-view bout (DAZN). But that would be a huge upset.

If Canelo walks through Bivol the way he bulldozed Callum Smith, Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders, his chances improve at actually doing what he envisions.

But at least one thing hasn’t changed. David Benavidez is still not in his plans. Among the myriad of names, weight classes and belts mentioned this week, there was no Benavidez. There was no mention of unbeaten middleweight belt-holder Jermall Charlo, either.

But increasingly Benavidez is the fighter at the top of the list. Take a poll. Benavidez, who faces David Lemieux on May 21 in Glendale AZ, is the fighter fans want to see against Canelo.

Even Hearn seemed to concede that much this week in a give-and-take with the media after a formal news conference Thursday.

“How can you say Charlo is a better fighter than Beterbiev? ‘’ Hearn said in a defensive counter to questions about the quality of Canelo’s opposition. “Are you mad? How can you say Charlo is a tougher fight than Dmitry Bivol at 175? Absolute rubbish.

“Who has Charlo ever beat? Keep going. Now, tell me the recent ones. (Juan Macias) Montiel? Terrible. He wasn’t motivated to fight. (Maciej) Sulecki? Lovely kid. But Sulecki? Put him in with Plant, with Benavidez.

“I think Benavidez could be the best of all of those.”

But it’s the best of a group that continues to be ignored in Canelo’s grand plan. For now, at least, that means the unbeaten Benavidez, a two-time former super-middleweight champion from Phoenix, is consigned to play the historical role that once belonged to Antonio Margarito. Oscar De La Hoya wouldn’t fight Margarito. Floyd Mayweather wouldn’t fight Margarito.

Hearn, however, suggests that Benavidez can change that role. It’s clear Hearn, like the fans, can see the explosive potential in a Benavidez-Canelo fight.

“That’s a big fight,’’ Hearn said.

But, Hearn also said, it’s up to Benavidez’ promotional team to put him in a better position to get the Canelo date he has sought for just about as long as Canelo has pursued history.

“Ultimately, the fights against Benavidez and Charlo are just voluntary defenses of his 168-pound title,” Hearn said. “He could (fight Benavidez at 175 pounds). But that’s another voluntary defense. If you said to Canelo, what would you rather do? ‘Fight Benavidez in a voluntary defense or fight Beterbiev for the undisputed light-heavyweight championship?’ it’s not even a conversation.

“Benavidez wants big fights. It’s embarrassing who they’re fighting. Why don’t you make Charlo versus Benavidez? Why don’t you make Benavidez versus Plant. You give them all these easy fights for all this money and they’re not selling. You’re just burning money.

“Get the guys together, make the fights. I know Benavidez. He wants the big fights. It’s PBC’s job to put him in big fights and they’re not. Canelo-Benavidez could be a massive fight.

“But it’s nowhere near what it could be.”

Interesting.Got it.Wow.

DANIEL DUBOIS WILL challenge Trevor Bryan for the WBA regular world title on June 11 in Miami and you can catch the heavyweight action, along with a British title double-header from Telford on the same night, all on BT Sport.

WBA No.1 ranked Dubois (17-1, 16 KOs) heads Stateside for his breakthrough fight against the unbeaten New Yorker Bryan (22-0, 15 KOs), with the pair set to fight for the right to be made mandatory to the full WBA champion Oleksandr Usyk, depending on the outcome of his forthcoming rematch against Anthony Joshua.

Bryan, 32, won his belt via an 11th round stoppage of Bermane Stiverne and has navigated a single defence against Jonathan Guidry, last time out in January, with success coming via a split decision on the cards.

Dubois, just 24, will be having his second fight across the Atlantic after introducing himself to the American market with a typical first round stoppage of Joe Cusumano last August. He previously won the WBA Interim belt with a second round demolition of Bogdan Dinu in Telford.

“I am thrilled that Daniel is getting his big opportunity to fight for a world championship belt,” said his promoter Frank Warren. “He has had to bide his time and be a little bit patient because there was always the risk of him being bypassed if he took another fight in the interim.

“Now his time has come and winning this fight will open all sorts of doors. A new generation of top heavyweights are closing in on the current kings of the division and Daniel, along with Joe Joyce, is leading the charge.

“Bryan isn’t a household name but there can be no room for complacency. He is unbeaten with a more than respectable knockout ratio, so Daniel will need to be on his guard and on his game in Miami.

“I am also delighted that BT Sport viewers will be served up with a double-helping of boxing action on the night, with our British title battles from the Telford International Arena leading into Daniel’s heavyweight title challenge.”

In Telford, Liam Davies (11-0, 5 KOs) will challenge new champion Marc Leach (18-1-1, 4 KOs) for the British super bantamweight title in his hometown.

In the other half of the British title double, Birmingham’s Ijaz Ahmed (10-2-1, 1 KO) and London’s Kaisy Khademi (8-1-1, 2 KOs) will go at it for a third time with the vacant super flyweight belt at stake and a final eliminator for a shot at the Commonwealth championship.

And in a fight where two prospects put it all on the line, the unbeaten super lightweight Eithan James (8-0) from Northampton goes up against Connor Parker (13-1, 1 KO), Zach Parker’s cousin from Woodville in Derbyshire, in an eliminator for the English title.

Manchester, England – (May 6, 2022) – The road back to title contention leads heavy-handed Liverpool cruiserweight Jay Farrell (9-2, 5 KO’s) to Manchester next week and a slot in the eight-man BOXXER Series: Cruiserweights tournament taking place Saturday, May 14 at Manchester Victoria Warehouse.

The tournament – which will require him to win three fights in one night to emerge victorious – will be his first fight since March 2020, when he came up short in a Central Area Title firefight which saw both boxers at times get knocked down only to pick themselves up off the canvas and return to the fray with renewed ferocity.

Today, having suffered two years of enforced inactivity due to the global pandemic, Farrell sees the tournament as a route to blast his name back into the contender conversation and is confident that the BOXXER Series format of three-round fights suits his hard-hitting style.

“I carry explosive power in both hands and if I land with either it will be an early night for my opponent,” says the heavy-handed Liverpudlian, who has a 55% finish rate in his victories. 

“I’ve always believed that punchers are born, not made, so a fast-paced shootout over 3 rounds is perfect for a puncher like me, but I’m a skilled boxer as well and this is my chance to showcase it.

“If anyone in this tournament is taking me lightly based on two losses on my record then they are gravely mistaken… I’ve not fought for two years but I’ve not spent any time out of the gym in that period, I’ve been sparring top class operators and former world champions like Rocky Fielding.”

Having made his professional debut in 2016 and challenged for the Central Area Title in his last fight, Farrell is at the more experienced end of the competitor pool for this BOXXER Series tournament. 

But after over two years out of the ring, and two losses by stoppage in his last four fights, he might just need to win more than anyone in the tournament.

“I’ve seen all aspects of this sport: I’ve been an unbeaten prospect, I’ve rebuilt after a shock upset loss, and then I was forced out of the ring for over two years. I know what it’s like to be on the floor and pick myself up and dig deep,” he says.

“I’m an experienced fighter who’s been at it a while and I’m surrounded by experienced coaches and mentors like Derry Matthews, and I’m coming to win the whole thing.”

LAS VEGAS – It’s blood sport. It’s show biz, too. Canelo Alvarez does both in a career that includes risk and riches, a balancing act hard to master and even harder to sustain.

But Canelo is there, still on the high wire and on an ascending path notable in part because there just aren’t many apparent rivals in his way.

He says he fights for history. His promoter says he fights for legacy. Those are noble pursuits, of course. But fans are a little bit more pedestrian. They just want to see him fight somebody.

Maybe, Dmitry Bivol is that somebody. Bivol is there, next on Canelo’s assembly line to legacy.

He’s got a belt. He’s has an unbeaten record. He’s a step up the scale for Canelo, who is moving from super-middleweight to light-heavy. Those are elements easy to promote, easy to sell for a crowd anxious to see Canelo confront the sort of adversity he hasn’t seen since his draw and narrow decision over Gennady Golovkin in 2017 and 2018.

Front and center, those maybes have been the sale pitch this week for Canelo’s fight with Bivol at T-Mobile Arena in a pay-per-view, DAZN fight. Maybe, Bivol can deliver the drama. Maybe, he can do what Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant could not.

“Yes, he is a good fighter,’’ Canelo said Thursday during a final formal news conference at MGM Grand. “He’s really a good champion. He’s solid champion, at 175 pounds. I respect Dmitry Bivol.

“This is the kind of fight that will put me in the books of history.’’

But it is also a fight burdened by much of what fans have seen for a couple of years. Despite Bivol’s overall competence and thorough skillset, he looks a little but like the string of Canelo earlier opponents.

None have had enough power to keep Canelo from mounting his trademark assault. The theory has played out repeatedly. If Canelo knows he can’t be hurt in the opening moments, he’ll launch his predictable beatdown. He’ll begin to move forward stubbornly with sustained punishment. Again, maybe Bivol has the skillset to slow him down.

“I believe in my victory,’’ said Bivol, notable because he’s a likeable Russian whose country is waging an unpopular war in the Ukraine. “If you don’t believe, you can’t win.

“Why not?’’

It’s a fair question. But there are lot of numbers that argue against Bivol’s belief. He hasn’t scored a stoppage in more than four years. More ominous, perhaps Is a revealing statistic from Compubox’s Dan Canobbio. Bivol has thrown fewer than 20 power punches in 44 of his last 51 rounds. You can’t beat Canelo that way.

Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, Canelo’s current promoter, is frustrated with the questions about Canelo’s opposition. He countered them repeatedly in a give-and-take with media after the news conference. The questions fail to acknowledge what Canelo is achieving in the here and now, Hearn said.

“He might be the greatest fighter ever since Ali,’’ Hearn said.

The generations since Ali have include some legendary names. Here are just a few: Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Roy Jones Jr., Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. Does Canelo belong among them? Hearn seemed to say that he does.

Canelo has been fighting champions, Hearn said. He’s been beating them too. But there are belts and weight classes aplenty these days. Hearns rival Bob Arum called all the belt-holders a bunch of “Jambonis” last Saturday when asked if he would put together a couple of more title 130-pound unification bouts together for Shakur Stevenson after his one-sided victory over Oscar Valdez for two of the junior-lightweight belts.

“Most of the people out there don’t know who the hell those guys are,’’ Arum said.

But they do know Canelo.

“This is my time,’’ Canelo said.

It is. It has been. And it might continue to be his time for a while. There’s a third fight with Golovkin looming in September. The consensus is that Canelo, now in his prime, will knock out the remains of the GGG rivalry with a dominant victory over Golovkin, who looks to be a year or two past his best days.

Hearn foresees a couple of fights in Europe. Then, he said, maybe Canelo can unify the light-heavyweight title against Artur Beterbiev in 2023.

“Maybe, next year’s Cinco de Mayo fight,’’ Hearn said.

Maybe. More like probably.

Bryan Acosta remained undefeated with a 10th round stoppage over Benito Sanchez Garcia in a featherweight bout at Rebel Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Canada.

In round one, Acosta dropped Garcia with a left hook.

Acosta dominated the action until a relentless flurry of action forced a referee stoppage at 1:37.

Acosta of Mexico is 17-0 with six knockouts. Garcia of Jalisco, MEX is 16-6-2.

Reeves Decisions Maldonado

Lee Reeves won an eight-round unanimous decision over Sebastian Diaz Maldonado in a junior welterweight bout.

Reeves, 140 lbs of Limerick, IRE won by scores of 80-72 and is now 9-1. Maldonado, 139 lbs of Aguas Calliente, MEX is 17-5-1.

Wilcox Decisions Martinez

Steven Wilcox won an six-round unanimous decision over Miguel Angel Martinez in a welterweight bout.

Wilcox, 142 lbs of Hamilton, ONT, CAN won by scores of 60-54 twice and 58-56 and is now 23-3-1. Martinez, 147 lbs of Jalisco, MEX is 15-5-1.

Zawadi stops Medina in 2

Mohammad Zawadi stopped Diego Paredes Medina in round two of their four-round light heavyweight bout.

At the end of round one, Zawadi dropped Medina with a left hook that was followed up by a combination. In round two, Zawai uncorked an overhand right that landed square on the head that put Medina down again. Medina followed that up with a big flurry that put Medina down for a third time, and the fight was stopped at 1:41.

Zawadi, 179 lbs of Barrie, ONT, CAN is 3-1 with three knockouts, Medina, 177 lbs of Culican, MEX is 2-2.

“I love fighting at home. I love hearing the crowd. It is very motivating for me.”

After this fight, Martinez plans to add Panama to his passport and get in a few fights in the home of Roberto Duran before coming back to settle a score with an old rival.

“I plan to win, and then go to Panama for a few fights. Get my record to 20-2, and then rematch Harold Calderon.”

Martinez dropped a decision to the undefeated Calderon, and that is a fight that Martinez wants back.

“Calderon told me that if I got three wins after our fight, that we could run it back. Saturday would be my fifth win since that fight, and if I get three in Panama that would make eight. That fight would be the biggest fight in the Miami area plus we shook hands on it. I have the tape to prove that. My goals are to beat him, which would put me in prime position for a title shot.”

King has got another night of action as the legendary promoter has put together five title fights headlined by the WBA Heavyweight Championship pitting defending champion Trevor Bryan (22-0, 15 KOs) going up against the number one contender Daniel DuBois (17-1, 16 KOs) from Greenwich, London.  

The action-packed evening is set for Saturday, June 11^th at the Casino Miami Jai-Alai in Miami, FL in the night the promoter is billing “The Fight for Freedom and Peace”.  The fight card will be on Pay-Per-View and an announcement on ticket availability will be made soon.

Bryan recently moved his training camp from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Las Vegas, NV and had a recent visitor in former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who worked with the present WBA champ on his jab.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 4, 2022) – Former world title challenger, Anthony Peterson (38-1-1, 24 KOs), the brother of two-time world champion Lamont Peterson, is returning on May 28th in Washington D.C. at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Peterson will fight at super lightweight against Saul Corral (23-18, 13 KOs), in his first 8-bout partnering up with Team Freeway Boxing headed by street legend, “Freeway” Rick Ross.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will see undefeated top super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem taking on Mike Plania in the 10-round co-main event, plus the Derrick James-trained unbeaten lightweight contender Frank Martin battles Panama’s power-punching Ricardo Núñez in the 10-round telecast opener.

Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) returns to fight in his hometown of Houston for the fifth time in his career, having most recently earned an entertaining unanimous decision win there over Juan Montiel last June on SHOWTIME. The 31-year-old scored an impressive unanimous decision triumph over top middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko in their September 2020 showdown and owns a 7-0 record since moving up to middleweight in 2017. A two-division world champion, Charlo also strung together an impressive run at 154-pounds, capturing the IBF title in 2015 and piling up victories over champions Austin Trout, Cornelius Bundrage and Julian Williams, whom he floored three times on his way to a memorable fifth-round knockout.

“I’m excited to get back in the ring in front of my people in Houston and put on a great show fighting on Juneteenth weekend once again,” said Charlo. “I’m ready to handle my business and give everyone what they’re coming out to see. Sulecki is a tough fighter who’s going to come in hungry. But I’m fighting for something bigger and I won’t be stopped from delivering a special performance on June 18.”

A native of Warsaw, Poland, Sulecki (30-2, 11 KOs) trains in Chicago, Ill. with his new co-trainer and longtime Polish contender Andrzej Fonfara. He will look to earn his third straight victory on June 18. The 32-year-old has never been stopped and has won four of his last five fights, including a unanimous decision over Gabriel Rosado that earned him the title shot against Demetrius Andrade that he would eventually lose by decision. Sulecki has fought professionally since 2010 and has also scored notable victories in defeating former titleholder Jack Culcay in 2017 and knocking out then undefeated Hugo Centeno Jr. in 2016.

“I’ve been training for a long time for this fight and I feel strong and ready to get in the ring,” said Sulecki. “Charlo is a great champion and I respect what he can do, but I don’t think he’s any better than the best fighters I’ve faced before. I think I am the stronger fighter mentally and physically. I don’t think he’s a killer. He hasn’t even been able to stop his last two opponents. I’ve fought as the underdog in my opponent’s hometown, so I’m not worried about fighting in Houston at all. We have a huge community of Polish fans in the U.S. and I know they’ll be there supporting me on June 18.”

Owning a top-10 ranking at 122-pounds from multiple sanctioning bodies, Aleem (19-0, 12 KOs) put on the most impressive performance of his career in January 2021 to capture the interim WBA title on SHOWTIME. Aleem dominated in a battle of unbeatens, dropping Victor Pasillas four times before eventually stopping him in round 11. Raised in Michigan and training out of Las Vegas, Nev., Aleem, 31, had stopped his past seven opponents inside the distance before most recently earning a decision victory over Eduardo Baez in November 2021.

“The time is now to take that next step in my career toward a world title shot and I know that a win against a tough opponent like Mike Plania will put me in that position,” said Aleem. “I’ve been waiting patiently for my opportunity to show everyone why I’m the best super bantamweight in the world. The 25-year-old Plania (26-1, 13 KOs) dropped Joshua Greer twice in their June 2020 clash on his way to a career-best decision victory, which he followed up in April 2021 by defeating Emmanuel Mogawa before stopping Ricardo Nunez in November. A native of General Santos City in the Philippines, Plania has put together a 11-fight winning streak since a 2018 decision loss against former champion Juan Carlos Payano. Plania has fought professionally since 2014, with five of his last six outings taking place stateside.

“Ever since I beat Joshua Greer to put myself in the world rankings, I have been looking for an opportunity to fight the best at 122 pounds to secure a world title shot,” said Plania. “June 18 is that time and by beating Ra’eese Aleem, I will show everyone I deserve to fight for the title. I want to thank my whole team for putting me in this position and I can’t wait to get in there and show what I’m capable of.”

The 27-year-old Martin (15-0, 11 KOs) rose up the lightweight rankings in 2021 with a pair of impressive victories before most recently delivering a New Year’s Day KO over Romero Duno. In 2021, Martin knocked out the previously unbeaten Jerry Perez in a dominating performance in April, before earning a unanimous decision over Ryan Kielczweski in August. Originally from Indianapolis, Martin now trains in the Dallas-area under the guidance of top trainer James alongside unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.

“I’ve been training hard in Dallas and I’m just excited and ready to go,” said Martin. “Núñez is a boxer-puncher, so I expect him to mix it up with some fast combinations and to try and throw my movement off, but I’ll be ready for all of that. Fight fans are going to enjoy an action fight with this one. We’ve got the speed, power and athleticism to put on an exciting show on June 18.”

Representing La Chorrera, Panama, Núñez (23-3, 21 KOs) enters this fight with knockout victories in his last two fights, including most recently stopping Richard Solano in the first round in October 2021. The 28-year-old moved back up to lightweight for those two victories after challenging three-division champion Gervonta Davis in July 2019 for a 130-pound title. Núñez has fought professionally since 2010 and has a brother also named Ricardo who is a veteran pro fighter in the featherweight division.

“I’m very happy to be back in a big fight on June 18,” said Núñez. “You’re going to see a whole new fighter against Martin. I’m coming to fight and impose my style on my opponent. Martin is a good boxer who’s made it to a high level, but he still has to show what he’s made of. I’m going to give one hundred percent to stop his rise and be the first person to beat him.”

(May 4, 2022) – Two-division world champion Badou Jack will prepare to make one more run at championship gold with his sights set on a cruiserweight title as he returns to action on Saturday, May 14 on “The Global Titans Fight Series” undercard available on PPV through LIVENow from the helipad of Dubai’s opulent Burj Al Arab Hotel.

“My goal is to cement my legacy and capture a world title in a third weight class,” said Jack, a longtime protégé of Floyd Mayweather throughout his championship run.

Jack will take on Hany “Egyptian Hurricane” Atiyo leading up to the main event showdown that will see legendary boxing Hall of Famer and “TBE – The Best Ever” Floyd “Money” Mayweather in an exhibition matchup against undefeated “Dangerous” Don Moore that can be purchased on PPV HERE.

NEW YORK (May 4, 2022) — Three belts and light heavyweight supremacy will be at stake when WBC/IBF world champion Artur Beterbiev meets WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. in a highly anticipated unification showdown Saturday, June 18, at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.
 
Beterbiev, boxing’s only world champion with a 100 percent knockout rate, hopes to pick up another strap against “Cinderella Man” Smith, a Long Island native who grew up about 70 miles from Madison Square Garden.
 
In the 10-round featherweight co-feature, two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez will battle the unbeaten Abraham “El Super” Nova. Beterbiev-Smith and Ramirez-Nova will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Beterbiev (17-0, 17 KOs), a two-time Russian Olympian, has spent his nine-year pro career based in Montreal, Canada. He has been a world champion since knocking out Enrico Koelling for the IBF strap in November 2017. He’s won five title fights inside the distance since then, including an off-the-deck victory over Callum Johnson and a title unification classic versus Oleksandr Gvozdyk in 2019. Beterbiev went 2-0 in 2021, capping the year with December’s brutal ninth-round stoppage over longtime contender Marcus Browne.
 
“I look forward to the challenge ahead of me. Joe Smith Jr. is a worthy champion, but I am coming to Madison Square Garden to add another world title to my collection,” Beterbiev said. “This fight will get me one step closer to becoming undisputed champion.”
 
Smith (28-3, 22 KOs) earned mainstream recognition with his 2016 knockout of living legend Bernard Hopkins and scored standout wins over Jesse Hart and Eleider Alvarez in 2020. In his second world title attempt, he outlasted Maxim Vlasov in a 2021 Fight of the Year Contender. Smith successfully defend his world title in January with a ninth-round stoppage over late replacement Steve Geffrard.
 
Smith said, “I am extremely excited and focused on this task I have ahead. Facing Beterbiev is huge. It is going to be a fight that fans remember forever, with two of the biggest punches in boxing today facing off. This opportunity is a dream of mine to accomplish. Ramirez (9-1, 5 KOs) has been on a sterling run since a shocking loss in his August 2019 professional debut. An Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016, Ramirez is coming off one-sided victories over the unbeaten Orlando Gonzalez and Irish veteran Eric Donovan. Nova (21-0, 15 KOs), who spent much of his career at junior lightweight, has been flawless since moving up to the featherweight ranks. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Albany, New York, Nova knocked out William Encarnacion in eight rounds on the Smith-Geffrard undercard in January.
 
Ramirez said, “I have always wanted to display my talent on a stage as important as the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City. Come June 18, I will not only take advantage of this big opportunity, but I will also hand Nova the first loss of his career. The undercard, which will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+, is scheduled to feature many of the sport’s rising superstars. In six-round bouts, Brooklyn-born featherweight puncher Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (3-0, 2 KOs) and Long Island welterweight Jahi Tucker (7-0, 4 KOs) hope to extend their unbeaten records. U.S. Olympian Troy Isley (5-0, 3 KOs), fresh off his knockout win on the Oscar Valdez-Shakur Stevenson undercard, returns in a six-round middleweight bout. Featherweight Kurt Walker (2-0, 1 KO) and junior middleweight Kieran Molloy (1-0, 1 KO), both of whom starred for the Irish national team as amateurs, will make their respective U.S. debuts.

BOSTON (May 4, 2022) – Two-time Dominican Olympian, lightweight Leonel de los Santos (6-0, 5 KOs), may be settling in the Boston area to enhance his professional boxing career. In fact, he recently spent a month there preparing for his last fight, which resulted in a win by way of a 6-round decision this past March in his native Dominican Republic.

Santos’ manager, Ryan Roach, lives in Boston and he introduced his undefeated lightweight to trainer Alex Rivera, and that paid immediate dividends in terms of improvement.

Santos, 26, trained at the Somerville Boxing Club under Rivera, who trains 26-0 welterweight Rashidi Ellis, who Santos sparred with several times, and US Olympian Rashida Ellis, Rashidi’s sister.

“The conditions at our training camp in Boston were very good,” Santos said. “I learned a lot of new things about professional boxing from Alex in just a short time, especially my defense about dodging smaller boxers. He really helped my performance in my last fight.

Rivera only worked with Santos two weeks, but the two connected right away.

“Leonel is a good boxer with a lot of experience,” Rivera remembered. “He has speed and power. We worked on making him more technically sound. It’s about hitting without being hit. He is very tall for his weight class – 5’ 8’ or 5’ 9” – with a good reach. We got along right away, and it was like we had been working together for a long time. I think he can make some noise with his amateur background. He has all the tools. Reminds me a little of Ryan Garcia: tall and strong for his weight class. Leonel has what it takes.

“I wasn’t with Leonel for his last fight, but I did watch some highlights. The guy he fought (Andres Bens Zapata) could really take a punch. Leonel’s hands were swollen after the fight from hitting his opponent so much. Leonel hit him with everything he had. I noticed how his defense and distance had improved. That’s what we worked on. He kept his distance and had a clean fight.”

Santos, who has relatives living in nearby Lawrence, MA, is applying for a work visa to train with Rivera.

“I think training with Alex vastly improved Leonel’s boxing and timing,” Santos’ manager Roach added. “Alex worked a lot on distance, which will lead to more power behind his shots. I saw big changes in Leonel’s last fight. He applied the skills he learned with Alex, and I look forward to more.”
