Gvozdyk hospitalized after Beterbiev fight

Following his stoppage defeat to Artur Beterbiev, former WBC Light Heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Gvozdyk remained hospitalized at Temple University hospital, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’m still here with him,” trainer Teddy Atlas said. “I just brought him last night because he had pain behind his head from the punches he got hit there, so they did a scan and saw a possible small something and did another scan six hours later and [the doctor] wanted us to stay 24 hours to be safe. So we canceled his flight, and I will stay with him here another night, then [on Sunday] bring him to my home [in New York] — just again to be safe. Then Monday, he will fly home. He is OK.

“He’s fine, but we are still here just as precaution and will stay the night. [On Sunday] morning, if all is the same, they will discharge him.”

Beterbiev stops Gvozdyk in 10 to unify Light Heavyweight titles

PHILADELPHIA-Artur Beterbiev not only kept his perfect knockout streak in-tact, but he unified two light heavyweight titles with an emphatic 10th round stoppage over Oleksandr Gvozdyk to retain his IBF and win the WBC crowns.

It was a close fight with each guy taking turns winning round’s. Gvozdyk was trying to box from the outside where Beterbiev was looking for power shits throughout the fight.

Towards the end of round one, Beterbiev threw Gvozdyk to the canvas. It was initally ruled a knockdown, but state commissioner Greg Sirb ruled a push. Both showed why this fight was viewed as a pick-em fight on paper as the fight was fought at an extreme high-level of class.

The fight started going Beterbiev’s way in round nine as he landed hard shots on a tired Gvozdyk. In round ten, Gvozdyk gave in as he was sent to the canvas three times by the still hard punching Beterbiev, and referee Gary Rosato stopped the bout at 2:49.

Beterbiev, 174.5 lbs of Montreal is 15-0 with 15 knockouts. Gvozdyk, 174,3 lbs of Khartov, UKR is 17-1.

“We work in the gym We work hard, and we have some targets,” Beterbiev said. “My first target, second target and other one comes soon.

“It doesn’t matter {who I fight next.} Anyone. I’m focused on title, not on name.”

Kudratillo Abdukakhorov won a 10-round unanimous decision over former world champion Luis Collazo in a welterweight bout.

In round eight, Collazo started to bleed from around the left eye. In round nine, Collazo suffered a nasty cut over his right eye, and the bout was stopped.

When the scores were announced, it was Abdukakhorov won by 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93, and is now 17-0. Collazo, 146.4 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is 39-8.

“I am the IBF No. 1 contender, and I would like to fight for the title fight next,” Abdukakhorov said. “I wanted to fight Errol Spence Jr., but unfortunately he got in a car accident. I wish him a speedy recovery, and if he’s ready to fight soon, I would like to fight him. If he has to vacate the title, then I will fight whoever they put in front of me.”

Collazo injured his biceps in the fifth round and was unable to throw his left hand much throughout the second half of the fight.

“Hey, it is what it is. This is part of the sport,” Collazo said. “We’ll see what’s next.”

Sonny Conto remained perfect by stopping Steve Lyons after round one of their four round heavyweight bout.

Conto won the 1st round, and Lyons did not come out after the round.

Conto, 214.1bs of Philadelphia is 5-0 with four knockouts. Lyons, 201.9 lbs of Louisiana is 5-6.

Jospeh Adorno scored an explosive 2nd round stoppage over Damian Sosa in a scheduled eight-round lightweight bout.

In round one, Adorno decked Sosa with a hard right. Adorno finished the fight a round later when he hammered Sosa to the ground along the ropes and the fight was stopped at 1:39.

Adorno, 136.8 lbs of Allentown, PA is 14-0 with 12 knockouts. Sosa, 134.7 lbs of Argentina is 9-3.

Julian Rodriguez scored a hard one-punch knockout over Leonardo Donorio in the 6th and final scheduled round of their super lightweight fight

Rodriguez leveled Donaorio with a vicious left hook that sent him to the canvas. Donorio got to his feet, but referee Benjy Esteves stopped the bout at 2:29.

Rodriguez, 142.6 lbs of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ is now 18-0 with 12 knockouts. Donorio, 139.4 lbs of Philippines is now 17-17-3.

Jeremy Adorno won a four-round unanimous decision over Misael Reyes in a super bantamweight bout.

In round two, Adorno dropped Reyes with a hard counter left uppercut off the ropes.

Adorno, 121.1 lbs of Allentown, PA won by scores of 40-35 twice and 38-37 to raise his perfect mark to 3-0. Reyes, 121.2 lbs of Kansas City is 1-3.

Josue Vargas won an eight-round unanimous decision over Johnny Rodriguez in a super lightweight bout.

Vragas, 140.2 lbs of Bronx, NY won by scores of 80-72 on all cards, and is now 15-1. Rodriguez, 140.5 lbs of Denver is 9-5-1.

Michael Seals needed jut 98 seconds to obliterate Elio Trosch in their scheduled eight-round light heavyweight bout.

Seals landed a powerful right hand that sent Trosch down for the count.

Seals, 174.6 lbs of Atlanta is 24-2 with 18 knockouts. Trosch, 173.2 lbs of Santiago Del Estero, ARG is 14-7-2.

DILMAGHANI V FONSECA GRUDGE FIGHT IS BACK ON FOR THE WORLD TITLE!

London, UK (18 October 2019) Hennessy Sports are delighted to announce that the salivating super-featherweight shootout between Alex Dilmaghani and Francisco Fonseca is back on!

The high-grade contenders collide over 12 rounds for the Vacant International Boxing Organisation World Title belt at London’s hallowed York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Saturday 16th November, in a fascinating contrast of styles that matches Crayford’s classy Dilmaghani with the nuclear hitting Nicaraguan.

Promoted by Mick Hennessy in association with Infinitum, Channel 5 and Mo Prior of Priority Promotions, Dilmaghani v Fonseca will be televised exclusively live in the UK on free-to-air Channel 5 and 5Spike.

Initially, the potent pair were primed to punch it out at the Bolton Whites Hotel late last month, only for Two-Time World title challenger Fonseca to fall ill prior to the ringwalk. On the advice of the doctors, Mick Hennessy had to make a compassionate call to pull the main event at the last minute and allow Fonseca to recover fully and reschedule for a later date.

But given the quality of this mouthwatering match-up, it was always going to be a case of better seven weeks late than not at all.

Dazzler ‘Dilma’, who enters on an incredible eight and a half year unbeaten streak and who earned lavish plaudits when he returned to Britain from a five-fight exile in North America, to slaughter Slovakian hard case Martin Parlagi in eight at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse in late May, finally faces the litmus test he has long coveted.

Two-time IBF World class title challenger Fonseca – from the nation that delivered ring legends Alexis Arguello, Ricardo Mayorga and ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez – has been bettered just twice in a 28 fight pro career and has sent 19 of his 25 victims for an early shower. Still only 25, the lethal Latino harbours big world title aspirations in his third world title attempt. It is a genuine world grade match-up.

A talent stacked 13 bout undercard is headed with an intriguing fight between Ireland’s highly decorated ex-amateur star John Joe Nevin, who is ambitiously matched with Fonseca’s equally combustible elder brother Freddy Fonseca for the Vacant WBA International Super-Featherweight Championship.

The magic man from Mullingar won European gold (2013, Minsk) and Olympic silver (London 2012) in the singlet, and has racked up a perfect 13 fight slate since entering the paid brigade in March 2014, sizzling in rings on the US East Coast as well as Ireland and mainland Britain. However, already 31, this mercurial talent needs to roll the dice if he’s to replicate past achievements as a pro.

Victory over Fonseca the Elder will provide Nevin with a short-cut to the major world titles but the savage Central American – world ranked until recently – has lost just four of 32 and 18 stoppage victories suggest he is a serious puncher. It’s certainly no formality.

Promoter Hennessy’s son, Michael Hennessy Jr, an all action, fast-rising, middleweight talent who is undefeated in three, features in a six rounder in what promises to be an unmissable fight night.

Mick Hennessy, CEO of Hennessy Sports, said, “I’m extremely pleased and relieved to finally to see this exciting match up back on and can’t wait to see Alex and Francisco get it on in the ring, I’m sure everyone will agree that it was a fight worth waiting for. Of course, it was very disappointing last time round that it had be cancelled at the very last minute, but we’ve battled hard to ensure that the fight remained on and will now headline at London’s famous and historic York Hall with the IBO World title on the line. A great chief supporting title fight on the card see Irish talent John Joe Nevin take on Francisco’s brother Freddy, they will be determined coming to London to make it a double family victory. With a great undercard also, this is a real fight card coming to the home of London boxing.”

A packed and top quality undercard also features: Bexleyheath super-flyweight Sammy Cantwell, son of Mickey, the former British Flyweight Champion; Stockwell welterweight Samuel Antwi; Welsh super-featherweight Rhys Edwards; Chelsea Lightweight Connor Marsden; two London based Romanians: super-welterweight Flavius Biea and heavyweight Lucian Atani; Tottenham super-lightweight Jeff Ofori; Basildon super-lightweight Lewis Smith; Islington middleweight Billy Underwood; Luton super-lightweight Jahid Munim and Islington featherweight Alizara Ghadiri.

Patrick Day: He’s dead, but not gone for a conflicted game looking for answers

By Norm Frauenheim-

It’s a conflicted sport. That borders on redundancy. Boxing wouldn’t be what it is without conflict. Yet, Patrick Day’s death exposes all of the jagged fault lines that have always been there. Drama and death. What thrills, kills.

It’s all there, hard to explain and now hard to understand. The conflicting emotions from Day’s death four days after suffering traumatic brain injuries in a knockout loss to Charles Conwell figure to haunt the game for a while.

The business moves on. There’s a great fight Friday, Artur Beterbiev-Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Philadelphia. Promoters are calling the light-heavyweight bout (ESPN) a possible Fight of the Year. They’re right. It promises drama. It promises thrills.

Yet, it’s hard to look forward to the looming clash without some trepidation, some anxiety, even some anguish. Cheers will come with concern. Day’s death hangs over the game, leaving troubling questions and a search for answers that might not be there. Yet, the search must happen. Lou DiBella said it best in his statement in the wake of Day’s death Wednesday.

“It becomes very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this,” DiBella said. “This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. It is, however, a time for a call to action. While we don’t have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate.’’

DiBella, in effect, was making a heartfelt plea. Don’t let Day die in vain. Don’t let Maxim Dadashev and Hugo Santillan die in vain. Both died within days of each other in July. Don’t let Boris Stanchov die in vain. He died of an apparent heart attack during a Sept. 21 fight.

There are some signs that regulators are trying to make the sport safer for those willing to take the risk, The California State Athletic Commission voted earlier this week to cancel a fight if a fighter is 15 percent above the contracted weight on the day of the bout. It’s believed that wild swings in weight, from the day before to the day of the bout, endanger fighters. Buddy McGirt, Dadashev’s trainer, told www.boxingjunkie.com that weigh-ins should be moved to the day of.

“They should have the weigh-ins the day of the fight,” McGirt said. “Listen, guys don’t fight at their normal weight because they know they have 24 hours to put weight on. Make the weigh-ins the day of the fight. Then you would know that you can’t really dry out and then have an IV and fight five, six hours later.

“I think you’d have less injuries. Say you’re trying to make 140 when you should realistically be at 147. You weigh, say, 143 and think, ‘I can get down to 140.’ But you have to dehydrate yourself, and that’s not good for your body or your brain. I’m not a doctor, but I’m not an idiot either.”

There are other possible safeguards. Day had been knocked down in the fourth and eighth rounds before the fatal blows landed in the 10th. On this scorecard, he was trailing 89-80. He couldn’t win on points. Given, the prior knockdowns, it was safe – emphasis on safe – to assume he wouldn’t be able to win by a late KO. Why not just stop it after the eighth?

It’s just one question, one of many. In Day’s name and for the sake of a conflicted game, answers are imperative.

On Friday, 22 November, the Singapore Indoor Stadium will once again play host to the world’s greatest martial arts athletes. In the main event, reigning ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao of Thailand will defend his World Title against countryman Saemapetch Fairtex.

More information for ONE: EDGE OF GREATNESS is available at www.onefc.com. Tickets are available at this link: https://www.sportshub.com.sg/ONE

Considered one of the greatest strikers of all time, Nong-O has captured nearly every accolade in Muay Thai. He made his first appearance at the famed Rajadamnern Stadium when he was just a teenager and won. That set off an incredible run of success.

The icon has competed in over 300 professional bouts. During that time, he claimed two Thailand National Muay Thai Championships, four Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Championships in different divisions, and a Rajadamnern Stadium Muay Thai World Championship.

Since joining the world’s best strikers in ONE Super Series, Nong-O has dominated the competition. In February, he captured the inaugural ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title with a unanimous decision victory over Han Zi Hao. He has since successfully defended his belt twice.

Nong-O’s next opponent is countryman Saemapetch, one of the fastest rising stars in Thailand.

The former MTGP Welterweight World Champion joined ONE Super Series in 2018 and has since impressed during his time inside the ring.

Prodigiously talented, Saemapetch took up Muay Thai at the age of 11, and a mere three years later, he was competing at the famed Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok. Now training out of the renowned Fairtex camp in Pattaya, alongside the likes of Muay Thai World Champions Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex and Stamp Fairtex, Saemapetch is certainly a noteworthy talent to watch out for.

In the co-main event of the evening, former ONE World Title challengers Amir Khan of Singapore and Ev “E.T.” Ting of Malaysia will do battle in a lightweight mixed martial arts contest.

Khan, a Singaporean Muay Thai champion, has faced the biggest names in ONE Championship’s lightweight division, including former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang and former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio Banario.

Ting, on the other hand, is coming off a spectacular come-from-behind victory against Daichi Abe last July. The Malaysian-Kiwi sensation, who is one of the world’s best lightweights, blazed a trail across Asia, New Zealand, and Australia before making waves on the global stage of ONE Championship.

Originally born in Malaysia, Ting was once a promising soccer player in school. But in 2009, he decided to switch his focus to mixed martial arts and began training at a local gym in Auckland. He made his professional debut in 2011, and has since defeated proven contenders such as former ONE Welterweight World Champion Nobutatsu Suzuki, Ariel Sexton, and Kamal Shalorus.

The rest of the card is stacked with even more world-class martial artists and local talent.

Singaporean star Tiffany Teo is set to make her ONE Championship return against promotional newcomer Maira Mazar of Brazil.

Teo is one of the fastest rising stars in Asia. She began her training in taekwondo, and then later moved on to compete in Muay Thai, boxing, and finally, mixed martial arts. The former ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title challenger now welcomes Mazar to the Circle. The Brazilian is riding a two-bout win streak, and she would love to extend it to three in her ONE Championship debut.

Also on the card is undefeated American featherweight Troy Worthen, who faces Chinese knockout artist “Rock Man” Chen Lei.

Worthen, who trains out of Evolve in Singapore, is a former NCWA Conference Champion and All-American with over 400 career wrestling matches under his belt. He made his mixed martial arts debut in 2015 and has since won all five of his bouts. He signed with ONE Championship last July and debuted with a second-round technical knockout victory over Chen Rui.

His opponent, the hard-hitting “Rock Man,” is a Shanghai Open BJJ Champion known for his fast and powerful hands. Chen started his ONE Championship career finishing his first four opponents in spectacular fashion.

Former ONE Strawweight World Champion Alex “Little Rock” Silva of Brazil is set to take on China’s Peng Xue Wen in a strawweight contest. Silva, a mainstay at Evolve in Singapore, is fresh off an impressive second-round submission victory over Stefer Rahardian. Peng, on the other hand, is a winner of two of his last three bouts.

Silva’s Evolve teammate, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion and former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke of Thailand, will see action against Pakistan’s Muhammad “The Spider” Imran.

In addition to that, Singapore-based Indian martial artist Rahul “The Kerala Krusher” Raju will face Pakistan’s Ahmed “The Wolverine” Mujtaba.

Lastly, in a Muay Thai contest, Thailand’s Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy takes on the United Kingdom’s Charlie Peters.

More bouts for ONE: EDGE OF GREATNESS will be announced at a later date.

ONE Championship also announced a partnership with HotelPlanner, a leading provider of online solutions and services to the global hotel sales market.

Hua Fung Teh, Group President of ONE Championship, stated: “It is my pleasure to announce that ONE Championship has teamed up with HotelPlanner as our hotel booking partner. REGIS PROGRAIS IMPRESSES LONDON MEDIA AHEAD OF UNIFICATION CLASH WITH JOSH TAYLOR

London, England (October 17, 2019) Training in London, England, for his second week, WBA Super Lightweight and WBC Diamond Belt World Champion
Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (24-0, 20 KOs), of Los Angeles, CA, via New Orleans, LA, opened camp for a large contingent of local media just nine days prior to his highly anticipated unification clash with IBF Super Lightweight World Champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (15-0, 12 KOs), of Glasgow, Scotland, at the famed O2 Arena in London, England, on Saturday, October 26. The fight marks the finals of the World Boxing Super Series with the winner being awarded the Ali Trophy and will be telecast on DAZN in the United States and Sky Sports Box Office in the United Kingdom.

Under the watchful eye of longtime trainer Bobby Benton, the DiBella Entertainment-promoted Prograis spoke about the upcoming bout.

“I absolutely cannot wait to get in the ring next Saturday night, it’s been a long camp in Los Angeles, then Houston, now London, but come October 26, it will all be worth it. He can’t beat me and he knows it. I’m the best 140-pound fighter in the world and I’ll prove that next Saturday night.

“I was never scared of Taylor, that’s just complete nonsense coming from him and he’ll know that when we fight. Next Saturday night will be very special for the fans at the O2 Arena and those watching the fight around the world. I’m going to put on a show.

“This fight is everything I’ve wanted, to show people that I am the best at 140 pounds. It’s nice to see the rankings and hear people say it, but I always wanted to prove it in the ring.”

In his last bout during the semi-final round of the World Boxing Super Series, Prograis dominated and stopped WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Kiryl Relikh in the sixth round on April 27, 2019.

Prograis is currently ranked the #1 Super Lightweight by Ring Magazine in addition to being ranked the #9 Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World by Yahoo Sports.

LIVE BOXING: THOMPSON BOXING WEIGH IN

JERMALL CHARLO VS. DENNIS HOGAN NEW YORK PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

NEW YORK (October 17, 2019) – Undefeated WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo and highly-ranked contender Dennis Hogan went face to face for the first time Thursday at a press conference to preview their showdown taking place Saturday, December 7 live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will see Charlo look to make the second defense of his middleweight title against the Irish Hogan, who fights out of Australia and nearly captured a 154-pound crown earlier this year.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on-sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com and barclayscenter.com. Tickets also can be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Here is what the press conference participants had to say Thursday from the Dream Hotel Downtown in Manhattan:

JERMALL CHARLO

“Brooklyn, we’re back. It’s been a while since we’ve fought here but Barclays is home for Lions Only. Barclays Center is the spot where everyone wants to fight. It feels like a new home.

“I want to thank Dennis Hogan for accepting my challenge. This belt isn’t going anywhere. I’m making a home for it at Barclays Center.

“Hogan has some big hopes. Middleweight is my division. I want the biggest fights at 160. That’s not on the menu right now, so I’m going to take care of what’s here.

“I am the best fighter at 160-pounds. In due time, the world will get a chance to see me reveal the best version of myself.

“I’m not worried about Hogan’s confidence. He is just number 30 to me. We’re going to get in there well prepared. I could fight tomorrow. Hogan is going to get a chance to see what he can do against my speed and my skills.

“This is going to be a knockout on December 7. I’m going to walk him straight into it. I’m going to give him exactly what he wants.

“This training camp has gone really smooth so far. I’m focused on being relaxed in the ring, so that when it’s time to explode, I’m ready. I want to go in there and have fun and keep working towards that next level.

“We’ve watched what we need to of Hogan. He’s not on my level. It’s time to get back to where I’ve always been. Barclays Center and SHOWTIME is my comfort zone. I’m on fire and I’m ready. I’m back where I want to be.

“I’m coming to Barclays Center to beat Hogan down. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m one of the best finishers in the world and I’m going to get a chance to show everyone on December 7.”

DENNIS HOGAN

“I’m very happy to be here in New York. I’ve fought here before and it’s always a great time. I’m looking forward to getting back in there again and being part of the rich boxing history of this city.

“I’m looking forward to becoming the next Irish fighter to come to New York and become a world champion.

“I believe that me taking this fight speaks volumes on what kind of fighter I am. I’m on record that I feel like the champion in my heart, and it’s only a matter of time before the belt is on my wait. It’s destiny. It’s time for me to become world champion.

“I’m one of the hardest workers in the sport. Anyone who trains with me, knows that. I have laser focus on that belt and I believe that it’s mine.

“Five years ago I was told super welterweight was the weight to campaign at. At that point I was the light heavyweight champion of Ireland. But as I went down in weight, that knockout power seemed to leave me. That last bit that I won’t need to drain for this fight will be all the difference and all I need on December 7.

“I’ve always been heavy-handed, but I think the power will be back. I have the speed of a welterweight, the agility of a 154-pounder and the chin of a heavyweight. When you put it all together, this is going to be a great fight.

“I’ve visualized myself wrapping the WBC title around my waist for years, and that dream has become manifest. I will wear that belt around my waist and paint the town green afterwards.

“I know that I’ll have big support at the fight, but I don’t rely on it. I know Charlo is a great fighter. But for me, this has nothing to do with him. This is about my destiny and my dream.

RONNIE SHIELDS, Charlo’s Trainer

“Jermall is really excited as always to fight on SHOWTIME. When he fights in Brooklyn, he’s extra motivated to make Barclays Center his home. There are great fighters here in New York, but he’s put on great shows in the past and he’s looking forward to putting on an even bigger show next time.

“I’ve been studying Hogan on video. He’s a very determined fighter. He comes to fight. I thought he won the fight against Jaime Munguia. I can understand how he feels right now. But we have to show him something different.

“We’re not planning to make this go the distance and have this be a close fight. We’re working on speed and combinations more than anything. I think you’re going to see a little bit different Jermall than from his last fight.

“We all have dreams, Dennis Hogan has dreams, but Jermall turns dreams into nightmares.”

PAUL KEEGAN, CEO of DDP Sports & Hogan’s Promoter

“We’re extremely excited to be here in New York with Dennis. We want to thank Jermall for this opportunity. We’re confident coming into this fight.

“We took this opportunity because not one 154-pounder would fight Hogan. After his last fight, our options were limited. Once we saw the fight was offered, we said yes.

“We believe we have the uncrowned world champion in our camp. He’ll be strong moving up to middleweight. We’re excited to bring out the Irish contingent in New York and can’t wait to see them come out for this fight.

“We’re not coming here for a holiday. This is destiny. An Irishman is going to become middleweight champion in New York City and that’s our goal.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, President, Sports and Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.

“We are thrilled to have Jermall Charlo back to where he belongs here on SHOWTIME. Jermall’s first appearance on SHOWTIME was on ShoBox back in 2013 at just 23 years old, a second-round knockout of Antwone Smith. He’s now an undefeated, two-division world champion and on December 7 he will be making his tenth appearance on SHOWTIME.

“As a fighter, Jermall is the complete package. Power, speed, athleticism and obviously an elite skill level. It’s no surprise that he’s one of, if not the most, avoided fighters in his division.

“Dennis Hogan deserves a lot of credit for stepping up to this challenge that many other fighters have not or would not. This is a tough, aggressive fighter. Many people believe he should be a world champion himself right now. If you look closely at Hogan’s two losses, he lost a decision to a German fighter in Germany and he lost a decision to a Mexican fighter in Mexico. Personally, I don’t believe he lost that fight in Mexico. He’s not afraid of a challenge or to go into somebody else’s home turf. He says that moving up from super welterweight to middleweight is going to make him much stronger than he’s been in the past and there’s no doubt he will be bringing a very vocal contingent of Irish fans with him.

“This is a very intriguing mix of styles and personalities here and we will have a very strong, very interesting co-feature which we will be announcing in the coming days. December 7 is a night not to miss.”

Undefeated WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo Defends Against Highly-Ranked Contender Dennis Hogan Live on SHOWTIME® Saturday, December 7 in Premier Boxing Champions Event from Barclays Center in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN (October 17, 2019) – Undefeated WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo will defend his title against highly-ranked contender Dennis Hogan Saturday, December 7 live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and is headlined by unbeaten middleweight star Charlo making the second defense of his 160-pound title against Hogan, a tough former world title challenger who has campaigned from super welterweight through light heavyweight.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on-sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.comand barclayscenter.com. Tickets also can be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

“Jermall Charlo is a can’t miss attraction and one of the brightest stars in boxing,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “He’ll look to make the second defense of his WBC Middleweight Championship in his fourth appearance at Barclays Center on December 7. He’ll have his hands full with the hard-charging Dennis Hogan, who many believe should be a 154-pound champion and should have earned the decision over junior middleweight champion Jaime Mungia. That performance has put him right back in a position to fight for a title and there’s no doubt that him and Jermall are going to leave it all in the ring and give fans a great fight live on SHOWTIME.”

“Jermall Charlo is one of those rare athletes who creates a spectacle every time he steps in the ring, and December 7 will be no different,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “Jermall is the complete package – speed, power, athleticism and elite talent – so it is no surprise that he is one of the most avoided boxers in his division. Dennis Hogan deserves credit for stepping up to a challenge which many other middleweights wouldn’t. Hogan is a tough, aggressive fighter who many believe should already be a world champion. This is an intriguing clash of styles and personalities.”

“We’re looking forward to hosting another great night of Brooklyn Boxing and to welcoming Jermall Charlo back into our ring for the fourth time,” said Keith Sheldon, EVP of Programming and Development for BSE Global. “December’s matchup against Dennis Hogan exemplifies our ongoing commitment to bringing world class fights to Barclays Center featuring the sport’s most exciting stars.”

The undefeated Charlo (29-0, 21 KOs) is one of the most exciting young champions in the sport. He and his twin brother, Jermell, were super welterweight champions simultaneously between 2015-17 before Jermall decided to move up to middleweight. Charlo won the IBF Junior Middleweight title with a thrilling TKO victory over Cornelius Bundrage in 2015. He made three successful defenses, including a victory over current unified champion Julian Williams, before moving up to middleweight.

The 29-year-old has proven to be just as dominant at 160 pounds as he was at 154, with three convincing performances since moving up in weight. Charlo will be making his second defense of the WBC middleweight title and fighting for the fourth time at Barclays Center. In a homecoming defense in June on SHOWTIME, he successfully defended the title against Brandon Adams with a unanimous decision in his first bout since being elevated to full champion. In his last fight at Barclays Center he shared the card with his twin brother, Jermell, and came away with a hard-fought unanimous decision over tough veteran Matt Korobov last December.

“Nobody knows Dennis Hogan like I know Dennis Hogan,” said Charlo. “He likes to come straight forward with that ‘Mexican’ style. I’m going to exploit that. He’s a tough fighter and he deserves a shot at the world championship because he competed well at the championship level already.

“I’m going on two consecutive 12-rounders and I don’t feel good about that. I’m ready to get back to my thing, which is knocking them out and getting them out of there. This is a big fight for me because it’s my 30th fight and I’m about to turn 30.”

Hogan (28-2-1, 7 KOs) is coming off a razor-thin majority decision loss to Jaime Munguia in a super welterweight world championship match on April 13 in which many thought Hogan did enough to pull off the victory. The 34-year-old, who was born in Ireland and now lives in Queensland, Australia, is looking for a clear-cut victory over Charlo in his first U.S. fight since 2016. Hogan put together a six fight winning streak before the title fight against Munguia.

“I am excited for the opportunity to challenge for the most prestigious belt in boxing, the WBC Middleweight world title against Jermall Charlo at Barclays Center,” said Hogan. “It doesn’t get any bigger than fighting in Brooklyn on SHOWTIME against the undefeated middleweight champion. After the disappointment I faced in April in Mexico, having been cheated out of the WBO Junior Middleweight world title that I strongly feel I earned, I am extremely grateful to have another opportunity to become a world champion.

“As an Irishman, I feel right at home in New York and have no issue traveling abroad once again to achieve my dream. I have successfully competed at light heavyweight and middleweight as a professional and I will feel stronger with the extra six pounds on December 7. I’m thankful to Jermall and his team for working with my team to provide this opportunity. I will be prepared and ready to shine.”

Promoted by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions, four potentially explosive bouts will stream live on UFC FIGHT PASS, the world’s leading digital subscription service for combat sports, starting at 9 p.m. ET.

The 29-year-old Flores (17-2-1, 15 KOs) is a knockout artist from Rowland Heights, California, whose only two losses as a professional have been to world champions, Joseph Parker and Charles Martin. A former World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth World heavyweight champion, Flores’ most recent fight was a controversial loss in New Zealand to Parker, who struck Flores numerous times below the bout, leading to a knockout.

Flores and Mario “Chabelo” Heredia (16-7-1, 13 KOs), a former WBC FECOMBOX champion from Mexico, will throw-down in the 10-round main event. Two fights ago, Heredia upset former WBC heavyweight world champion and Nigerian Olympian Samuel Peter by split decision.

Texas light heavyweight Samuel Clarkson (22-5, 15 KOs), who lost in 2017 to Dmnitry Bivol for the World Boxing Association (WBA) nterim light heavyweight, will be showcased in the 10-round co-featured event against an opponent to be determined.

Undefeated Mexican welterweight Santiago “Somer” Dominguez (19-0, 15 KOs) puts his untarnished pro record on the line in an eight-rounder versus his Uzbekistan opponent, Ravshan Hudaynmazarov, who was the 2007 World Military Games champion.

The UFC FIGHT PASS opener pits undefeated California super middleweight Juan Jose “Nazzy” Dominguez (11-1-1, 10 KOs) in his RJJ Boxing debut against Fidel Hernandez (20-7-1, 11 KOs), of Phoenix.

Dominguez’ younger brother, welterweight Marcos “Nazzy” Dominguez (1-1-1, 10 KOs), will be in action, off UFC FIGHT PASS, in an either-round match against unbeaten Tucson welterweight Christopher Gonzalez (5-0-1, 1KO).

HEFFRON HAPPY TO TEST DRIVE BENTLEY

MARK HEFFRON REVEALED that he would be more than open to a battle of the middleweight bangers against Denzel Bentley if there is a belt at stake.

Heffron moved to 24-1 on Saturday in Leeds with a first round stoppage of the usually durable Rui Manuel Pavanito and is now on a sequence of three straight victories since his only setback against Liam Williams in December of last year.

Bentley from Battersea is 11-0 and the heavy-handed 24-year-old is making quite a name for himself, blasting out Kelcie Ball inside a round last time out at the Royal Albert Hall in September.

Both men carry formidable punching power, with Heffron having stopped 18 of his 24 losing opponents, with Bentley’s KO-ratio standing at nine out of 11.

It would have all the makings of a fan-friendly war where something would have to give and Bentley, 24, has previously expressed willingness on his part to engage in what would be a mighty collision.

The 27-year-old Heffron shares those sentiments.

“Yeah I’ve seen that in an interview with him,” said the Oldham man. “He is a good operator and a good fighter – and it would be a top fight. I would definitely do it if there is a good title on the line and it makes sense. I would fight anybody.

“I want titles and want something that means something,” added Heffron who, ideally, would relish another crack at the British title.

Heffron secured himself mandatory position for the middleweight edition of the Lonsdale belt and was initially lined up to fight the then champion Jason Welborn in December. Welborn then relinquished the title and Heffron subsequently accepted an invitation to fight the already world-level Williams for the vacant title.

He has no regrets over taking such a big step up, even though it resulted in a punishing 10th round stoppage.

“I am not in this game to avoid anyone and when the fight got offered to me, I took it. I couldn’t not take the fight. You learn a lot from your mistakes and I learned a lot from that fight. I am ready to move on now.”
