DUBOIS: THE BEST IS YET TO COME

DANIEL DUBOIS is promising ‘another devastating performance’ when he takes to the ring at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Friday September 27 with the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title on the line.

Tickets went on sale today (Fri Aug 9) for the clash between Dubois and unbeaten Ebenezer Tetteh, subject to the Ghanaian winning a warm-up this weekend with WBO world flyweight champion Nicola Adams also featuring on the bill, live on BT Sport.

Dubois enters into his 13th professional fight against Tetteh – competing for his seventh title — and comes into the fight off the back of his spectacular demolition of domestic rival Nathan Gorman last time out when he claimed the British title

Defeating Gorman, Dubois believes, has increased his stock ahead of his next title assignment and his slightly longer-term aim of breaking into the elite band of heavyweights.

“It is like getting back to the drawing board now with this next fight and getting ready for this next date and seeing what’s what,” considered the 21-year-old.

“The last fight boosted my profile and a lot of people tuned in. It was special in that regard, with a lot of people watching with their own opinions on who would win. It builds exposure for me and grows my profile, so I’m glad I got that one done.

“The best is still yet to come and I’ve a whole lot more to give.

“I’m not too far away from the big boys and breaking into that league. I am very focused right now, determined to push on and not let anything hold me back.

“Whoever I’ve got to beat, I will beat,” explained Dubois by way of a mission statement before adding his thoughts on forthcoming opponent Tetteh, who holds a record of 19-0 with 16 of the wins coming via KO.

“It is going to be interesting and I am confident I will come out with the victory. I am at the stage where I am only getting better and in this fight I might show something a little different that boxing fans haven’t seen before.

“This is the fight business and we are in the fighting game, so when the guy has got two gloves on and is swinging with all his might, I think there is enough danger in that already.

“It is obviously a prestigious title on the line so I have got to approach it seriously because he will be trying his best. I’ve got to make myself ready.

“It is going to be buzzing again and I am sure it is going to be an amazing night of boxing. I am looking forward to putting on a show at the Royal Albert Hall.

“It is going to be another devastating performance from me.”

Beside’s Dubois and a world title clash involving Adams the show will also feature WBO European super-featherweight champion Archie Sharp, middleweight banger Denzel Bentley, heavyweight Jonathan Palata, lightweight Mohammad Bilal Ali and precocious bantamweight talent Dennis McCann.

Exciting prospects Lewis Edmundson, Eithan James and Sam Noakes all make their professional debuts

Tickets for the September 27 bill at the Royal Albert Hall are available to purchase from www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.royalalberthall.com. Prices £40, £50, £75, £100, £150 Ringside.

FIORDIGIGLIO AND EGGINGTON CLASH IN FLORENCE

Orlando Fiordigiglio will make the first defence of his IBF International Super-Welterweight title against Sam Eggington on a Matchroom Boxing Italy and Opi Since 82 promoted show at the Tuscany Hall in Florence on Thursday September 19, shown live on DAZN.

Arezzo’s Fiordigiglio (31-2, 13 KOs) picked up the IBF ranking title with a split decision win over Stephen Danyo in April, outpointing the former WBO European Champion over ten rounds to earn the fifth title of his pro career.

Birmingham’s Eggington (26-6, 15 KOs), a former European Welterweight Champion, was stopped by former Super-Welterweight World Champion Liam Smith at The M&S Bank Arena Liverpool in March but has since returned to winning ways with victories over Jordan Grannum and Lewis van Poetsch.

Correzzola’s Devis ‘Boom Boom’ Bosheiro (47-6-2, 12 KOs), a former European Super-Featherweight Champion, clashes with Barcelona’s Ivan Tomas (9-0-1, 3 KOs) for the vacant IBF International Super-Featherweight title over ten rounds.

Unbeaten Bergamo Welterweight talent Dario Morello (15-0, 2 KOs) defends his WBO Global Welterweight title for the first time against Bracknell’s Luther Clay (11-1, 5 KOs) following on from his win over Ahmed El Hamwi in Milan.

Elsewhere on the card, there’s action for Cascina Flyweight Mohammed Obbadi (19-1, 13 KOs), Avellino Featherweight World title challenger Carmine Tommasone (19-1, 5 KOs) and undefeated Roma Super-Lightweight Sebastian Mendizabal (3-0).

Ross Garritty of Matchroom Boxing Italy said: “It’s a pleasure to be returning to the venue that saw the launch of the historic joint venture between Matchroom Boxing Italy, OPI Since 82 and DAZN back in November 2018. Our first five events in Florence, Milan and Rome have been overwhelmingly successful and Florence fight fans are in store for another exciting night of title action at Tuscany Hall on September 19.”

Christian Cherchi of OPI Since 82 said: “It is always nice to return to Florence after the success of our first events in the city. We have an explosive main event in Orlando Fiordigiglio vs. Sam Eggington for the IBF International Super-Welterweight title and exciting title fights for Devis Boschiero and Dario Morello. Mohammed Obbadi is never in a dull fight, Roma Super-Lightweight prospect Sebastian Mendizabal steps up again and Carmine Tommasone returns after his WBO Featherweight World title challenge against Oscar Valdez.”

Tickets will be available from next week on ticketone.it and boxofficetoscana.it. For more information call: +39 338 7769949

VERGIL ORTIZ JR. VS. ANTONIO OROZCO FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS (Aug. 8, 2019): Vergil Ortiz Jr. (13-0, 13 KOs) and Antonio “Relentless” Orozco (28-1, 17 KOs) hosted their final press conference today at The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Texas ahead of their 12-round fight for the WBA Gold Welterweight Title. They were joined by many of the undercard fights for this event. The fights will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 at The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN.

Below is what today’s participants had to say at the press conference:

VERGIL ORTIZ JR., Welterweight Contender:

“I want to thank Golden Boy and Eric Gomez; he was the first guy to discover me when I was an amateur and gave me this opportunity, and I’m just really grateful for it. I think everything has been said already I’m not here to mess around. Golden Boy has given me some tough fights and I have passed them with flying colors, even though I’m color blind. Orozco is a very tough opponent, I’m not taking him lightly at all. He deserves all the respect in the world, especially on that ring. It’s sink or swim…good thing I’m a good swimmer. I’m just looking forward to seeing those familiar faces in the audience. Best of luck to Orozco. This isn’t personal, we are here to support our families.”

ANTONIO OROZCO, Welterweight Contender:

“First of all, I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be here. Texas is a big state and I know you guys are going to come strong, like that heat that’s outside. We know the tremendous fighter that Vergil Ortiz is, and everyone knows my style of fighting. This is going to be a fight you don’t want to miss. It’s a great opportunity, putting us both towards that world title shot again, and I’m looking for to that victory on Saturday.”

JOSHUA FRANCO, NABF & WBA International Bantamweight Champion:

“Thank you everyone for coming out today. Thank you, Golden Boy and God, for this opportunity to fight once again. I hope everyone makes it to see a very explosive card. I think I won the first one, I won the second one, and this time is even going to be worse for him.”

OSCAR NEGRETE, Bantamweight Contender:

“As you all saw, I fought two exciting fights in the past, those two fights were very good fights, emotional fights, where I felt like I won, and most people have told me that I won. I’m here to prove that I won and show that I am the true champion. This time I have prepared like never before, even better than the first two fights, and I hope Joshua Franco is prepared and I hope that this time, he comes to fight and not to run.”

MARCELINO LOPEZ, Super Lightweight Contender:

“I’m happy to be part of this event. It’s a great opportunity to be on this card. I’m prepared for what I came for, and I’m ready to show it on the ring. Anything I could say right now is irrelevant if I don’t show it on the ring. To be fighting alongside my ex-stablemate, Vergil Ortiz Jr., is great and I’m here to put on a great show and I’m proud to represent Argentina on Saturday.”

HECTOR TANAJARA JR., WBC USNBC Lightweight Champion:

“I want to thank Golden Boy, DAZN, everyone for coming out. I want to thank my team for getting me ready; without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m ready for Saturday and to put up a great show.”

TRAVELL MAZION, Super Welterweight Prospect:

“I’m originally from Austin, Texas so it feels pretty good to actually be here, to be fighting in front of my old fight friends from the amateurs. Alex, George, Hector, we were always in the same locker room, getting ready for the fights together, it feels really awesome. I want to take this moment to dedicate this fight to the victims of El Paso and Dayton, I definitely want to dedicate my fight to them.”

ALEX RINCON, Super Welterweight Prospect:

“I just want to thank Golden Boy and DAZN for having us here today. Thanks to everyone here who came to support all the fighters. It’s going to be a great, great show for all the fighters here on the card. As my brother said, we grew up with a lot of these fighters as amateurs, seeing each other in the tournaments, seeing each other on the bout list, but it’s going to be an even greater feeling being in the locker room, warming up next to each other and seeing each other rack up those wins. It feels great to be home. A great, great show is going to be put on Saturday night. Get your earplugs ready because the team Rincon brothers are going to bring a lot of noise on Saturday.”

GEORGE RINCON, Super Lightweight Prospect:

“To be on this stacked card with all these great fighters that I grew up with in the amateurs, it’s a great blessing to be here fighting on the same card. Vergil being the main event and a great fight, all these guys, and of course my brother, fighting with him on the same card is always a great experience, especially here at home. We’re always pushing each other to be greater every time. I’m excited to perform on Saturday night. Training camp went well, weight is good, and I feel great. We have a game plan for the fight and hopefully it won’t take too long to take my opponent down.”

TRISTAN KALKREUTH, Cruiserweight Prospect:

“Without the environment I grew up in with my family, I would be going in a different direction than where I am today. We finished training camp with a bang, we’ve been preparing for this fight with Ronnie, we’ve been working on staying tighter, working my jab more, step back and counter. It’s crazy because me and Vergil, we came from the same high school, so it’s awesome. I used to watch Vergil when he was an amateur TKO’ing people in Golden Gloves. I looked up to him at one point, and it’s just awesome seeing where he is today and for me to be able to fight on the undercard.”

ERIC GOMEZ, President of Golden Boy:

“We are committed to bring these types of events and happy to be back in the great state of Texas. I want to take our sponsors Tecate and Henessy who are very instrumental in helping us put these types of events together. This is a very nice arena and is great for boxing. I think the fans and media are going to enjoy the setting because is an intimate setting. You all are going to be right in front of the action. Everyone here at the Theater at Grand Prairie has treated us well. This is the beginning of a long relationship and I think the fans are going to love it on Saturday.”

Ortiz vs. Orozco is a 12-round fight for the WBA Gold Welterweight Title presented by Golden Boy. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING,” and Hennessy “Never Stop. Never Settle.” The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 at The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN.

Saturday: Jason Sosa Ready for Another Title Run and Robeisy Ramirez Set for Pro Debut

PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 8, 2019) — Opportunity has knocked for former WBA super featherweight world champion Jason Sosa. After Carl Frampton suffered a freak injury at the fight hotel Monday — a concrete pillar fell and broke his left hand — Sosa’s 10-rounder versus Haskell Lydell Rhodes was elevated to the main event.

Sosa, middleweight knockout artist Edgar Berlanga (11-0, 11 first-round KOs), and the professional debut of two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez will headline a night of fights Saturday evening at the Liacouras Center (10 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

Two days before the fights, they stopped by the James Shuler Memorial Boxing Gym for a “Back to School Giveaway,” where dozens of local children were given backpacks for the upcoming school year.

This is what they had to say.

JASON SOSA

“It’s a blessing to be the main event, but it sucks what happened to Frampton. Stuff can happen, and we gotta always be ready and prepare for everything that is thrown our way. I’m excited to headline in Philly. It’s been a long time.”

“It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. I know a lot of us always say, ‘you’re going to see a different fighter.’ I’ve been training hard. I’m hungry. I feel like I’ve restarted my motor and am ready to go again. I’m excited.”

“I’ve had a couple wins in a row, and after this fight, I’ll be ready to fight any of the world champions. I’ve been at that level before, and I know I can do it again.”

EDGAR BERLANGA

“I’ve been bumped up to the co-main event, which is a blessing. I’m going to go out there and give the fans the type of fight they want to see.”

“I grew up idolizing Felix Trinidad. My dad had a VHS copy of his fight with Fernando Vargas, and I watched it countless times. I’m from Brooklyn, but my Puerto Rican roots are important to me, and Trinidad continues to inspire me as a fighter.”

“I’m a knockout puncher, and it just so happens that nobody has made it out of the first round against me. I always train to go the distance, and I am always prepared for any type of fight.”

ROBEISY RAMIREZ

“It has been a long journey, but I am excited to finally be making my professional debut. Philadelphia is a great city with a lot of boxing history, and it’s an honor for me to begin my professional journey here.”

“I want to stay active, stay busy and continue to improve with the great team I have behind me.”

“I know the professional game is different from the amateurs, but I am confident I can make the necessary adjustments and become a world champion. I fought countless great fighters as an amateur, and I am ready to test myself against the best professionals.”For more information, visit: www.toprank.comwww.espn.com/boxing; Facebook:facebook.com/trboxing; Twitter: twitter.com/trboxing.

UNDEFEATED PROSPECTS JARON ENNIS AND BRANDUN LEE RETURN AUG 23 IN BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA

BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA – August 8, 2019 – Two of boxing’s most promising prospects, Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Brandun Lee make their much-anticipated ring returns in separate bouts on Friday, August 23 on the undercard of the Rumble in the Rose District on Main Street in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Jaron “Boots” Ennis (22-0, 20KO) is widely considered to be the best prospect to come out of Philadelphia in recent years. Ennis, who is coming off a knockout win over Raymond Serrano last December, is slated to face Bolivia’s Franklin Mamani in a 10 round, junior middleweight bout.

California’s Brandun Lee (15-0, 13KO) is also back in a six round welterweight contest versus Mexico’s Francisco Medel. Lee, who is only 20 years old, is quickly becoming known as a big puncher with an impeccable work ethic.

The two fights will take place on the untelevised undercard of ShoBox The New Generation, which is topped by Vladimir Shinskin vs. DeAndre Ware.

“I’m very excited to get them back in the ring,” said Now Boxing Promotions’ founder Cameron Dunkin. “These are perfect fights to get them ready for bigger and better televised opportunities. We’re grateful to Stephen Espinoza of Showtime for the opportunity.”

IBO INTERNATIONAL TITLE ANNOUNCED AS VINCENT FEIGENBUTZ EYES EUBANK JR WORLD TITLE SHOT

The IBO International super-middleweight title will be on the line when Germany’s Vincent Feigenbutz (30-2, 27 KOs) faces Cesar Nunez (16-0-1, 8 KOs) on August 17 in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Following an emphatic fifth round demolition of Przemyslaw Opalach (27-3, 22 KOs) in January, 23-year-old former WBA super-middleweight World Champion Vincent Feigenbutz is looking to take the next step on his ‘Road to the Top’ and add the IBO International title to his collection.

“With a win over Nunez, the ‘KO King’ Vincent Feigenbutz is one step closer to IBO World Champion Chris Eubank Jr. That’s a fight we want, before facing fighters like Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo”, said promoter Nisse Sauerland.

“Vincent has to take care of Nunez first, but we are confident he will live up to the ‘KO King’ nickname. Vincent is in top form, he’s highly ranked and we are looking forward to him putting on a show on August 17 and taking another step towards a world title shot.”

Whilst the unbeaten Spaniard Cesar Nunez has been preparing with esteemed Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz in tropical Miami, Vincent Feigenbutz has been fighting Europe’s heatwave as he looks to ensure he is ready for August 17.

“We had a good, but exhausting camp. The hot temperatures of 40 degrees certainly played a part in the gym,” said Feigenbutz. “Training is fun, but nothing compares to fighting. Slowly the excitement builds as we get closer to August 17.

“I am looking forward to fighting near my home town once again and I hope that fans in Ludwigshafen and from across the region will come out to support me!”

The fight tops a huge night of boxing featuring 17-year-old sensation Sophie Alisch (3-0, 1 KO) against Vanesa Caballero (1-5-3), unbeaten super-welterweight Ahmad Ali (14-0-1, 10 KOs) against experienced Arman Torosyan (19-6-1, 16 KOs), Team Sauerland’s two newest recruits Katharina Thanderz (11-0, 2 KOs) and Hadi Srour (3-0, 2 KOs) and some of Ludwigshafen’s best local talent.

All the action from the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle is available to watch live on Sport1 in Germany and Viasport+ and Viaplay in Norway. Tickets are available online via www.eventim.de or by calling +49 01806-570440.

EPIC ABU DHABI SHOWDOWN WEEK SCHEDULE TO UNDERLINE UAE CAPITAL’S HEAVYWEIGHT LEISURE AND ENTERTAINMENT DESTINATION STATUS

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Tuesday 6th August, 2019: The hugely-anticipated entertainment schedule for Abu Dhabi Showdown Week has been revealed, with the seven-day series of city-wide events – which take place September 1 – 7 ahead of UFCâ 242: KHABIB VS. POIRIER – shaping up to be the hottest week-long party in the Middle East.

With only a handful of VIP and hotel package tickets left available for UFCâ 242, Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has upped its own ante with an expansive series of lifestyle, retail and culinary promotions and an eye-catching schedule of parties and after-parties hosted by major international nightlife brands.

Cementing Abu Dhabi’s growing status as an entertainment hotspot, the UAE capital will come alive during Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, with dedicated beach and pool parties by day, and headline concerts and high-energy after-parties by night.

Superstar rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers are already confirmed to make their UAE debut with a spectacular concert on September 4, which will be followed by another world-class concert by a ‘mystery’ act on September 5. While both concerts will take place at The Arena, a new indoor venue being constructed on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island that will also stage UFCâ 242 on September 7, the party vibe extends right across Yas Island and beyond all through the week.

With even more events due to be added in coming weeks, the current line-up of parties and nightlife events includes pool parties at Saadiyat Beach Club on September 2 and 3, a fight night viewing party at the same venue on September 7 and a week-long Abu Dhabi Showdown Week poolside brunch offering at The Edition. Things go up a gear with the official Red Hot Chili Peppers After Party, Bizarre by Mad on September 4, and a second official post-concert After Party, Drais Las Vegas at the same venue following the September 5 concert.

On September 6, Drais Las Vegas will also host a pool party at the Fairmont and in the evening, following the UFCâ 242 weigh-in, domestic and international partygoers can enjoy the after party in The Edition Club, The Annex. Partygoers are also spoiled for choice on September 7, as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Showdown Week gets not one but two options for a fitting finale, with The White Experience and Socialista at Cipriani both set to round off the week with a bang.

In addition, a series of in-mall activations running during the seven-day Abu Dhabi Showdown Week period will hand members of the public, money-can’t-buy chances for photo opportunities and meet-and-greets with UFC athletes, and pose for social media-friendly snaps with replica UFC belts.

“These eclectic offerings will accentuate Abu Dhabi’s credentials as a world-class shopping destination and stimulate increased revenue across participating outlets, while our food and beverage partners have united to create a compelling menu of themed promotions that will ensure the spirit of Abu Dhabi Showdown Week extends well beyond its core concert and MMA components to stimulate business for restaurants, cafes and bars.”

With UFCâ 242 serving as the mega Abu Dhabi Showdown Week headliner, fans and the general public will be able to experience the world’s fastest-growing sport franchise in various athlete-led activities across the UAE capital.

Across the week, there will be open workouts, autograph signings and meet-and-greet sessions at various locations. With the UFCâ 242 weigh-in at The Arena on Yas Island taking place on September 6, further information on how to claim a free ticket to the weigh-in will be released in coming weeks.

“The UFCâ 242 weigh-in will give fans the opportunity to see their favourite athletes square off face-to-face during an amazing afternoon of drama,” added Al Shaiba.

Fans descending on Yas Island for the weigh-in can also soak up the activity-packed UFC Fan Experience, which allows fans of UFC to fully immerse themselves in the organisation and its stars.

August 17: Barboza, van Heerden and Alimkhanuly to See Action LIVE at Banc of California Stadium and Streaming on ESPN+

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 7, 2019) — Undefeated super lightweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr., South African welterweight contender Chris van Heerden and unbeaten middleweight prodigy Janibek Alimkhanuly will all see action in scheduled 10-rounders Saturday, Aug. 17 at Banc of California Stadium on the undercard of WBO junior featherweight world champion Emanuel Navarrete’s title defense versus Francisco “Panchito” De Vaca.

The trio will be part of a stacked undercard that will air live on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport streaming service, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Barboza (21-0, 8 KOs), fresh off a knockout win over Mike Alvarado in April, will take on Jose Luis Rodriguez (25-13-1, 13 KOs). A native of nearby South El Monte, California, Barboza is ranked No. 4 by the WBO at 140 pounds. Rodriguez is 0-1-1 in 2019, including a competitive decision loss to former world title challenger Antonio Orozco and a draw with then-unbeaten prospect Bakhtiyar Eyubov.

“That Alvarado fight boosted my confidence to a whole new level,” Barboza said. “I’ve always been confident, but I needed to know I could do it at that level. The hard work paid off. We’ve trained hard for this fight. I’m at another level now, and we’re ready to showcase that on the 17th.

“Everyone looks at the rankings, but it’s the next man up on the contract for me. Of course I want a title shot, but the longer these champions wait, the harder it will be for them because I am building my confidence in the ring.”

Alimkhanuly (6-0, 2 KOs), who captured a gold medal at the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics, will face Stuart McLellan (27-3-3, 11 KOs). Trained by Buddy McGirt, Alimkhanuly most recent fought on the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Anthony Crolla card April 12 in Los Angeles, dominating Cristian Olivas over 10 rounds.

“Every time I fight, I try to show what ‘Qazaq Style’ is all about,” Alimkhanuly said. “With every fight, I gain more valuable experience, and I will be ready to challenge for a world title before long. I have an incredible trainer in my corner and the confidence needed to advance to the next level. This is a very big stage, and I will show everyone that I’m a middleweight to watch.”

van Heerden (27-2-1, 12 KOs) will face Aslanbek Kozaev (33-2-1, 8 KOs), who has won seven in a row dating back to November 2015. On March 23, van Heerden impressed in his Top Rank debut, notching a six-round technical decision over Mahonri Montes in a bout that ended due to a cut suffered by van Heerden.

“It’s a homecoming for me on Aug. 17,” van Heerden said. “The LA fans will adopt this South African boy. I am grateful to Top Rank for the opportunity to compete and stay busy on my road toward a world title.”

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Zanfer Promotions and Iron Boy Promotions, tickets priced at $100, $80, $70, $60, $45 and $25 (not including applicable fees) are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at 800-745-3000 and in person at the Banc of California Stadium box office.

In other action on the undercard:

  • Super lightweight contender and 2008 U.S. Olympian Javier Molina (19-2, 8 KOs) will look to make it three wins in a row against Manuel Mendez (16-5-3, 11 KOs) in an eight-rounder.

  • Unbeaten welterweight Brian Mendoza (17-0, 12 KOs), who turned heads with a sensational one-punch KO on May 4 in Stockton, California, will return to action in an eight-rounder versus Larry Gomez (9-1, 8 KOs).
  • Former Russian amateur standout Dmitry Yun (1-0, 0 KOs) will face Javier Martinez (4-6, 3 KOs) in a six-rounder at lightweight.
  • Super lightweight prospect Elvis Rodriguez (2-0-1, 2 KOs), whose last fight ended in a  technical draw due to an accidental headbutt, will fight Jesus Gonzalez (6-2, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder.

WARRINGTON: “I WOULD GIVE SHAKUR STEVENSON 12 ROUNDS OF HELL!” (Press Conference Quotes)

JOSH WARRINGTON will be back home in Leeds when he defends his IBF world featherweight title against number four ranked Sofiane Takoucht at First Direct Arena on Saturday October 12, live on BT Sport

Warrington (29-0, 6KOs) who will be making the third defence of his championship faced off with French challenger Takoucht (35-3-1, 13KOs) at a press conference today.

Here are a selection of quotes from the media event and details of a magnificent undercard featuring some of Britain’s best young boxers.

JOSH WARRINGTON: “I hoped for a unification, but that isn’t mine, my management or Frank Warren’s fault. None of the champions seem to want it. I have to stay active so we’re back in Leeds. Some of my fans had money saved to go and watch me in America and Frank really tried. I am hoping to get through this one and it happens. All I am doing is concentrating on keeping my title, but ultimately my dream is to unify. I just want to win a unified title against one champion and I will then fight anyone until the cows come home. Takoucht has a massive opportunity and he has been given a golden ticket. Takoucht knows he has a massive opportunity in my back yard and it would be ridiculous to think this is a given. I am not there to make a statement, but show that if I step up to any of the other champions I beat them. The fire is in my belly. I want a performance and must beat people like this is style. I would be disappointed if it was a long drawn out points win. I want to get it done quickly. Michael Conlan is making big waves, but I want the other champions then I will fight the likes of him. I’m coming up to ten years as a professional. The support has just grown and grown and inspired young fighters in Leeds. The journey hasn’t finished. I would love the WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz and if Shakur Stevenson wins the WBO title I would line him up and give him 12 rounds of hell, but it’s this fight against Takoucht I’m thinking about.

SEAN O’HAGAN (Warrington’s father and trainer): “Takoucht is a very experienced fighter and the highest ranked fighter available at number four. It is a genuine fight and one where we know we have to raise our game and keep the momentum going until the super fights come. Takoucht is very capable and we are taking him serious. He has plenty of grit, is durable, can box, fight or be evasive. He has a bit of everything and it makes for a good fight. We had a bad night at the office against Galahad and still won. Anthony Joshua had a bad night and got leathered. We always enjoy fighting in Leeds and this time we have an opponent who wants to fight.”

SOFIANE TAKOUCHT: “This is a childhood dream for me since I started boxing at ten years old. Winning this would change everything and I hope it brings me recognition. Josh is a great champion and this is a wonderful opportunity. I will show myself in a good light.”

ALAIN VASTINE (Takoucht’s trainer): “Nothing is given in life so we are coming here to win, nothing else. We have an opportunity and it’s up to us to grab it and we will do everything to get it. Sofiane has courage, determination and a big heart. We know that Josh has the support, but it has been like that before in the Ukraine, but we are coming to win and will win.”

The big world championship fight will be backed up by four title fights that guarantee action and excitement.

Zelfa Barrett (22-1,13KOs) will make the first defence of his Commonwealth super-featherweight crown against exciting Scot Jordan McCorry (18-6-4, 4KOs).

Leeds idol Jack Bateson (10-0, 3KOs) challenges Preston’s Michael Ramabeletsa (17-17, 8KOs) who will be making the first defence of his English super-bantamweight belt.

Manchester’s Lyndon Arthur (15-0, 12KOs) faces Ghanian Emmanuel Anim (14-2-1, 12KOs) for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title, in a battle of the big hitters.

Darlington’s Troy Williamson (11-0-1, 8KOs) takes a step up in class when he meets Rotherham’s Nav Mansouri (20-2-2, 6KOs) for the vacant WBO Intercontinental super-welterweight belt.

Besides the FIVE title fights, also boxing on the show will be Willy Hutchinson (9-0, 6KOs), Mark Heffron (23-1, 17KOs), Shakiel Thompson (4-0, 3KOs), Shabaz Masoud (5-0, 1KO), John Joyce, 1-0) plus exciting debutants bantamweight Muhammad Ali and York super-welterweight George Davey.

A media event with the undercard boxers will take place in the near future.

Tickets are available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk and firstdirectarena.com Prices: £40, £50, £75, £100, £150, £200, £350 – Inner Ring Hospitality.

Young, confident Peixoto ready to put on a show

Lincoln, RI (Aug. 7, 2019) — He works full-time five days a week, sometimes six, installing insulation in homes, and can even do construction, everything from dry wall to stick framing.

When he’s done, he rides his bike to the Big Six Boxing Academy in Providence — seven and a half miles there, and seven and a half home — to work on the one craft you can’t learn in a classroom.

Elijah Peixoto (1-0, 1 KO) might be the best-kept secret in New England boxing if not for his extensive amateur background. The 24-year-old East Providence, RI, native’s resume dwarfs that of most who’ve come out of this region and puts him in elite company with some of the best in the northeast to lace up in the gloves.

A boxer since the age of 12, Peixoto finished 119-27 as an amateur, including four Southern New England Golden Gloves championships, multiple New England Regional titles, four additional Regional Junior Olympic championships and a trip the 2018 Olympic Trials Qualifiers. Two years before that, he won the Cape Verdean Olympic Trials, but the team did not compete due to financial reasons.

Arguably one of a handful of truly elite fighters to emerge from New England in this generation, Peixoto recently signed a long-term promotional agreement with CES Boxing and will make his Rhode Island debut Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel in a four-round super lightweight bout against Tampa’s Carlos Otero (2-0).

Tickets start at $47 are available online at www.cesboxing.com or www.showclix.com or by phone at 401-724-2254. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET. Showtime is 7.

“I want to put on the best show I can,” Peixoto said. “I’ve been in with the best of the best. I’m not afraid to step in there with anyone, and if I have to step up early in my career to show everyone I’m ready, I’m with it.

“It’s going to be crazy. The energy is going to be wild.”

The work ethic that pushes Peixoto to work a full-time job — and not just a desk job, but a job that requires demanding, physical labor — and balance it with his boxing career was instilled at an early age. His grandfather, Charlie Babbitt, and father, Ricardo Crawford, introduced him to the sport as a child. He boxed in all circles, training and sparring as a youth alongside Rhode Island icons Jamie Clampitt, Gary Balletto and Jarrod Tillinghast, absorbing as much as he could along the way. He also met former pro Josh Beeman through his current trainer, Roland Estrada.

Upon launching his amateur career, Peixoto knew it’d only be a matter of time before he turned pro. To put his resume into perspective, Peixoto faced current unbeaten Worcester, MA, lightweight Jamaine Ortiz — who also appears on Friday’s show — seven times as an amateur. The two also fought alongside one another at the 2016 Trials, Ortiz at 141 pounds and Peixoto at 132.

“Every time was a war, and when I say a war, I mean a war,” Peixoto said. “There’s a mutual respect between us. That’s the kind of brotherhood you normally wouldn’t have with another sport.”

The two met up again at an amateur event in Rhode Island, where Ortiz urged Peixoto to turn pro.

“A year later we’re on the same card,” Peixoto said. “Life is crazy sometimes.”

Fighting everywhere as an amateur from Memphis to Spokane to Chattanooga prepared Peixoto for that long-awaited pro debut, and, as expected, he put on a show, stopping Carlos Galindo in the second round of their scheduled four-round fight in June.

“When I was younger, people always told me I had more of a pro style. That’s how my father taught me,” he said. “You could look at my style and say, ‘That kid is going to be great.’ It’s written all over the walls.”

Peixoto, who graduated from East Providence High School and went to vocational school to learn construction, expects to climb the ladder quickly. In his just his second fight, he faces Otero, also an accomplished amateur, who goes by the nickname “Slick Hands.” When Estrada fielded the offer for Peixoto to fight Otero, he never hesitated to accept, bluntly stating, “Elijah can take care of himself in the ring.”

The four-round fight between the two could steal the show on Friday’s stacked undercard, which would be a fitting scenario for the long-awaited homecoming of one of Rhode Island’s most accomplished amateurs. The hard work is starting to pay off, and as the accolades roll in, Peixoto will undoubtedly answer the bell by continuing to outwork everyone in his path.

“If you really want something, you have to work for it,” Peixoto said. “I hope that other person is training as hard as me, because when I step in that ring you know I’ll be working from Day 1.

“This sport makes me dig deep because I want to get to that level where I don’t have to work. I want to work hard now so I won’t have to work anymore. I want everyone to know my skill level and my passion.”

Next Friday’s main event features reigning NBA Heavyweight World Champion Juiseppe Cusumano (18-2, 16 KOs) of Sicily in the quest to add another belt to his collection when he battles “The Gentle Giant” Steve Vukosa (11-1, 4 KOs) of nearby Quincy, MA, in an eight-round bout for the vacant WBC USNBC crown.

In the co-main event, Ortiz (11-0, 6 KOs) the reigning WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion, puts his unbeaten record on the line in an eight-round showdown against French challenger Romain Couture (8-1-1, 4 KOs), who makes his United States debut.

The undercard features six undefeated prospects looking to keep their perfect records, including Pawtucket, RI, featherweight Ricky De Los Santos (8-0, 1 KO), who battles Reading, PA, vet and Dominican standout Yeuri Andujar (4-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round featured bout. Lightweight Michael Valentin (6-0, 1 KO) of Providence, RI, also steps up in his toughest test to date against Philadelphia’s Lonnie Jackson Jr. (4-1-1, 1 KO), in a six-round special attraction.

Another red-hot fighter, Marqus Bates (7-2, 5 KOs) of Taunton, MA, aims for his sixth consecutive win in an intriguing six-round welterweight bout against well-traveled Lancaster, PA, vet Evincii Dixon (8-23-2, 3 KOs), who fights for the 34th time in six years and returns to Rhode Island for the first time since 2013.

Also facing a tall order on the undercard, Big Six Boxing Academy super welterweights Victor Reynoso (4-0, 4 KOs) and Lamont Powell (4-0, 1 KO), both of Providence, put their identical records on the line in four-round featured bouts. Reynoso battles Canadian Kenny Chery (2-2, 1 KO), whom Powell faced in February, while Powell looks to build off his impressive win in April in a major step-up against Reading’s Ricardo Garcia (14-7-1, 9 KOs), a Dominican Republic native and veteran of 22 professional fights. Worcester, MA, welterweight Nicholas Briggs (4-0, 3 KOs), also unbeaten, returns to face Macon, GA, native Bryan Goldsby (5-13), a veteran of 18 professional bouts.

Bateson (10-0, 3KOs) who sold £60,000 worth of ticket when he boxed on the Warrington-Galahad bill challenges Preston’s Michael Ramabeletsa (17-17, 8KOs) who will be making the first defence of his English super-bantamweight belt.

Manchester’s KO King, Arthur (15-0, 12KOs) who is being talked of as a future Anthony Yarde opponent faces Ghanian Emmanuel Anim (14-2-1, 12KOs) for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title, in a battle of the big hitters.

In the fifth championship clash Darlington’s Williamson (11-0-1, 8KOs) takes a step up in class when he meets Rotherham’s Nav Mansouri (20-2-2, 6KOs) for the vacant WBO Intercontinental super-welterweight belt.

Warrington’s challenger Takoucht (35-3-1, 13 KOs) is a former European champion and ranked fourth in the latest IBF rankings.

Warrington, 28, said: “From what I’ve seen, Takoucht is tough and got his IBF ranking through hard work.

“This is a massive opportunity for him. I have to stay focused and not take my eye off the ball because I am after the biggest fights in the division.”

Promoter Frank Warren explained: “We wanted to make the Oscar Valdez unification fight for Josh, but he is giving up the WBO title and moving up in weight.

“I know how much Josh wants the WBA champion, Leo Santa Cruz but he doesn’t seem keen right now.

“If you look at the IBF Ratings number one and two are vacant, and Takoucht was pretty much the next available contender.”

Warrington won his world title in an upset points win against defending champion Lee Selby in May 2018 when 25,000 fans packed into Elland Road to support him.

Last December he defied the bookies odds again when he thrashed two-weight world champion Carl Frampton on points in his maiden defence. He followed that up with the Galahad victory.

Warrington turned professional in October 2009 and before winning a world championship he captured English, British, Commonwealth, European and WBC International titles.

Takoucht is on a eight fight winning streak and won the IBF International title to earn his place among the world’s top featherweights.

Southpaw Takoucht, 33, said: “When the call came to travel to Leeds and challenge Josh I said, ‘yes’ straight away. It’s a chance to beat the best featherweight in the world.

“He beat Lee Selby when nobody thought he could win and then a great fighter, Carl Frampton. It was close against Kid Galahad, but he found a way to win.

“I am sure he will look at me and think I am easier than his last three opponents, but I won’t let this opportunity go. Get ready for a shock.”

Besides the FIVE title fights, also boxing on the show will be Willy Hutchinson (9-0, 6KOs), Mark Heffron (23-1, 17KOs), Shakiel Thompson (4-0, 3KOs), Shabaz Masoud (5-0, 1KO), John Joyce, 1-0).

Exciting prospects, bantamweight Muhammad Ali and Henry Wharton trained York super-welterweight George Davey make their professional debuts.

Tickets for the October 12 show go on sale from 2pm today (Weds August 7) and are available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk and Firstdirectarena.com. Prices: £40, £50, £75, £100, £150, £200, £350 – Inner Ring Hospitality.

Will Stamp Fairtex’s Transition to Mixed Martial Arts Be Tough?

Stamp Fairtex
is a two-sport world champion, which is something that no other ONE Championship athlete in history has accomplished. In fact, it’s pretty much rare in the world of combat sports. But what’s to come for Stamp could be even more massive.

On 16 August at ONE: DREAMS OF GOLD in Bangkok, Thailand, the Thai superstar will enter the world of mixed martial arts as she attempts to capture another world title in a third sport.

Stamp is the reigning ONE Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Champion, and is undefeated with ONE in both sports. She saw success competing in mixed martial arts in 2018 when she used a head kick to score a knockout win over Rashi Shinde in just 19 seconds — her mixed martial arts debut under Rich Franklin’s ONE Warrior Series.

When she returns to the mixed martial arts scene, Stamp will face India’s Asha “Knockout Queen” Roka.

With background in boxing, Roka will bring her own brand of striking prowess against Stamp. She is an Indian National Boxing champion known for her fast hands. Throughout her career as a mixed martial artist, Roka is a perfect 4-0 with — all of her wins were stoppages, two of which by submission.

One major concern heading into the matchup is if Roka can go toe-to-toe with Stamp in striking. As a Muay Thai and Kickboxing champion, Stamp is advanced in this area. She, however, has a disadvantage when it comes to grappling, particularly on the ground.

Muay Thai requires quite a bit of clinch work, and Stamp has proven to be sturdy in these situations. Roka can go for a takedown to test Stamp’s ability to work off her back, which is a part of her game that was never tested in her two other sports.

Roka needs to be smart in picking her spots for a takedown. If she goes for a lazy or predictable takedown attempt, it could backfire on her given that Stamp is effective with her legs and knees.

Stamp could counter and score another early knockout victory.

Roka must find a way to overcome Stamp’s home-field advantage as well. Beating Stamp at a neutral venue is already a tall order, but facing her in Thailand makes it all the more difficult.

Stamp will be challenged as well as she transitions to mixed martial arts, but she can look to past athletes for some inspiration.

The mixed martial arts world is littered with athletes who have made a similar transition in their careers. Names like Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Valentina Shevchenko experienced success in Muay Thai before shifting to mixed martial arts where they became champions or title challengers.

Stamp will need to adjust her skills a bit when she competes in mixed martial arts. A win over Roka in Thailand, though, would give her the confidence that she can succeed in a third sport.

Danny Roman Makes Fifth Defense of WBA Title Against Mandatory Challenger on Sept. 13

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 6, 2019) – WBA and IBF World Super-Bantamweight champion Danny Roman takes on lethal WBA mandatory challenger Murodjon Akhmadaliev on Friday, Sept. 13 from the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, New York, live on DAZN in the U.S. and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Roman (27-2-1 10 KOs) unified his WBA crown with the IBF strap of Irishman TJ Doheny in a fight of the year contender at home in Los Angeles in April, a fifth World title win on the bounce and fourth inside 14 months for the 29-year-old.

Roman’s fifth defense of his WBA crown pits him against dangerous Uzbek talent Akhmadaliev (6-0 5 KOs). The highly decorated amateur has looked fearsome in ending five of his six pro outings to date inside the distance, with the 25-year-old’s last win coming on the same Los Angeles bill as Roman’s dust-up with Doheny.

Roman vs. Akhmadaliev is brought to you in association with Thompson Boxing and World of Boxing.

“Anyone that knows me understands that I’m a real fighter,” said Roman. “I’ll fight anyone they put in front of me. Akhmadaliev is hungry, but so am I. It wasn’t that long ago [2017] when I challenged for the WBA title so we’re not going to give it up. I’m here to fight and defend the WBA belt once more. I have two belts [WBA and IBF], but I want more. My goal is to get all of them so by no means am I overlooking Akhmadaliev. He has that amateur pedigree, can punch with power and likes to come forward. The second you underestimate someone, that’s when bad things happen. I’ll be ready for whatever he brings.

As a unified champion, I understand I have a target on my back. That’s why I’ve been in the gym, staying sharp like I always do. There’s no time to relax and look back at what I’ve done because my work isn’t finished.”

“Danny is among the most committed and disciplined World champions out there,” said Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing Promotions. “He relishes challenges and at this point in his career, he only wants the toughest and biggest fights. Akhmadaliev is a young and dangerous opponent, but Danny has all the tools to continue his reign as the best talent in the division. We’re confident that he’ll deliver another excellent performance and retain his WBA title for the fifth time.”

“I am very glad that Daniel Roman took this fight,” said Akhmadaliev. “I know that we are both warriors and this will be a real war! Don’t miss this fight!”

“We have been waiting for this fight for some time,” said Vadim Kornilov from World of Boxing. “I believe with the will, character, and power of both of these guys, this fight will be a fight of the year candidate.”

HANEY FACES ABDULLAEV IN CRUNCH FINAL ELIMINATOR IN NEW YORK

Devin Haney can take a giant leap towards World title glory when he faces fellow unbeaten star Zaur Abdullaev in a final eliminator for the WBC World Lightweight title on Friday September 13 at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, New York, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Haney (22-0 14 KOs) made an electrifying debut with Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN in May, destroying Antonio Moran with a KO of the year contender in the seventh round of their clash in Maryland. The 20 year old fights in the Big Apple for the first time in his career and the Las Vegas native, ranked #2 with the WBC, hits Manhattan for his biggest fight yet in association with DHP Promotions and Titov Boxing.

Abdullaev (11-0 7 KOs) is ranked #3 with the WBC having landed the Silver Lightweight strap in just his ninth pro outing in April 2018, and the highly rated and dangerous Russian registered his 11th pro win and seventh inside the distance in February, stopping Humberto Martinez in Ekaterinburg, and now fights outside his homeland for the first time in his career.

The WBC crown will be in the hands of either Vasiliy Lomachenko or Luke Campbell MBE when the clash at The O2 in London on August 31, with Haney and Abdullaev keenly observing that clash from their training camps become locking horns on September 13.

“It always feels good when I get the official date,” said Haney. “I stay in the gym because I’m a dog and I love to fight. I want the world to see me rise to my competition. The better they are the better I am. I’m fighting an undefeated fighter at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

“New York fans are some of the most loyal fans in sports and I’m looking forward to really putting on a show for them. Abdullaev likes to apply pressure and I expect nothing less on September 13. I’ve seen him fight and he’s a hungry fighter, there’s no doubt he is my toughest opponent to date. This fight is one step away from a World title fight so we both have a lot on the line.

“Abdullaev doesn’t have a big name, but he’s ranked #3 for a reason, and I’m not ducking him or anyone else that stands in my way. I’m blessed to have tremendous support from DAZN and Eddie Hearn. With this partnership I have an opportunity to fight the best in the world. I encourage everyone in NYC to buy their tickets or get the DAZN App and watch my growth into the next superstar in boxing. This fight is going to be lit!”

“I’m delighted that the fight is happening,” said Abdullaev. “I was panicking when I saw some posts from Haney on social media that nobody wants to fight him at 135lbs, and he might have to move up in weight. I kept biting my nails and really wanted to get engaged but been told to stay patient. Allah the gracious has delivered this fight and now its reality.

“I am a bit disappointed that the fight won’t be at Haney’s Las Vegas back yard as it would have been great to dethrone him in front of his home crowed, but New York is a great boxing city. I’m not silly and I do understand that I’m coming as an underdog but on September 13, I’m coming to crash the hype against all odds.”

WBA and IBF World Super-Bantamweight champion Daniel Roman leads a stacked undercard in a mouth-watering chief-support bout as he takes on lethal WBA mandatory challenger Murodjon Akhmadaliev. Roman (27-2-1 10 KOs) unified his WBA crown with the IBF strap of Irishman TJ Doheny in a fight of the year contender at home in Los Angeles in April, a fifth World title win on the bounce a fourth inside 14 months for the 29 year old.

Roman’s fifth defense of his WBA crown pits him against dangerous Uzbek talent Akhmadaliev (6-0 5 KOs) – the highly decorated amateur has looked fearsome in ending five of his six pro outings to date inside the distance, with the 25 year old’s last win coming on the same LA bill as Roman’s dust-up with Doheny.

“As a unified champion, I understand that I have a target on my back.

There’s more World title action on the bill as record-breaking seven-weight World champion Amanda Serrano challenges WBO World Featherweight champion Heather Hardy in an all-Brooklyn affair, brought to you by DiBella Entertainment in association with Matchroom Boxing USA.

Serrano (36-1-1 27 KOs) conquered her seventh weight class at the Hulu Theater in title in January when the Puerto Rican destroyed Eva Voraberger inside the opening round to claim the vacant WBO Super-Flyweight title.

Serrano held the WBO Featherweight strap in 2016 before vacating it then her sister Cindy picked it up later that year. Hardy (22-0 4 KOs) was next in line to win the vacant title in October in a rematch against Shelley Vincent in the Hulu Theater. Hardy put boxing on hold to return to MMA in June with an outing at Bellator 222 at Madison Square Garden but returns to boxing to go head-to-head with her fellow Brooklynite.

“We found out in February that as a super-champion Amanda could call out any champion in any weight division and she would be the next defense — and she chose me. I didn’t get this far in the boxing game to not know how it works, they’re hyping up a big fight between her and Katie Taylor and this is the second of Amanda’s three-fight deal.

“It will be my first time competing as an underdog even as the current world champion but I’m excited as hell. Everyone knows I have the balls for it. I grew up with a tough mamma, trust me – nobody scares me.”

“I’m very excited to be back in the ring and excited to be fighting Heather Hardy,” said Serrano. “Heather is 22-0 for a reason, she always finds a way to win. We’ve sparred in the past and I’ve never had an easy day with her.

“So many of the other champions vacated their belts to avoid fighting me but Heather is a true world champion who will not give up her belt.

“We know each other well and I’m honored to fight her for her World title. It’s nothing personal, just business for two girls from Brooklyn in the ring.”

“On Friday, September 13, seven-division world champion Amanda ‘The Real Deal’ Serrano will attempt to wrest the WBO Featherweight title from undefeated champion Heather ‘The Heat’ Hardy in what promises to be an explosive matchup,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Neither Hardy nor Serrano have ever been in a bad fight, both Brooklynites have passionate fan bases and are tremendous ambassadors for women’s boxing. This is a must-win fight for both boxers and will steal the show.”

The Heavyweight landscape remains a hot one and there’s a great 50-50 clash on the card as Michael Hunter challenges Sergey Kuzmin for the WBA Intercontinental title. Hunter (17-1 12 KOs) holds the International strap with the WBA having KO’d Alexander Ustinov in Monte Carlo in November and defended that with a second round KO of Fabio Maldonado in Maryland in May. The 31 year old is rapidly rising in the rankings and can take a huge leap towards World title action with a win but faces a crunch challenge in the form of Kuzmin (15-0 11 KOs).

The unbeaten Russian puts the strap he won at Wembley Stadium in London in September against David Price and first saw off LaRon Mitchell and then Joey Dawejko in successful Stateside defenses. With Kuzmin ranked #5 and Hunter #8 with the WBA, the victor in New York will be knocking on the door for a title shot, raising the stakes in this pick’em match-up, in association with World of Boxing.

“I’m excited to be fighting Sergey,” said Hunter. “I know that this is not going to be an easy fight, but I am definitely up for the challenge and I want to show people that I am the best in the division.”

“I have worked very hard for this opportunity,” said Kuzmin. “I am here to win this fight and go after the World title. It doesn’t matter to me whether this fight is in the USA or in Russia, I am very confident in my victory. I know my opponent very well, he’s a good boxer, but only one of us is going to be victorious.”

“This is a fight between two top ten prospects, both hold regional titles,” said Vadim Kornilov of World of Boxing. “This fight will hopefully be an eliminator for the World championship mandatory.”

“This is a brilliant show and a big chance for Devin to take NYC by storm,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Abdullaev is a dangerous undefeated fighter but Devin is ready for all comers and wants to win this fight and then go straight into the Lomachenko vs. Campbell winner. It’s crazy to believe he is just 20 years of age – I think it’s fair to say he is the most exciting young fighter in the world right now.

“Roman vs. Akhmadaliev is an absolute war, Danny refused to vacate the belt and like a true champion will face a young fearless, hard hitting mandatory challenger who is taking a giant leap after just six fights.

“The Heavyweight division is red hot and Hunter v Kuzmin maybe one of the match ups of the year – do not blink on this one! We probably could have filled this venue with Serrano vs. Hardy alone, it’s an amazing fight for NYC with the winner set for a defining Katie Taylor fight next. Do not miss this show!”

“We are excited to kick off our busy fall line-up with the return of blue-chip prospect Devin Haney on DAZN,” said Joseph Markowski, DAZN EVP, North America. “Matchroom has put together a stacked card for New York fight fans and those watching around the world on DAZN. We are preparing to close out our first year in boxing with a bang and it all starts September 13 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.”

An announcement on ticket prices and on-sale dates will be made later this week.

He genuinely cares about the fighters he represents. His skills and expertise will be beneficial in Joe Ward’s quest to become a world champion.

CLARESSA SHIELDS vs. IVANA HABAZIN RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5 LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK – August 6, 2019 – Undisputed middleweight world champion Claressa Shields’ attempt at history has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 5 live on SHOWTIME. Shields will aim to make history as the fastest fighter in boxing, male or female, to become a three-division world champion when she takes on former world champion Ivana Habazin for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight Title on SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT) from Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, Mich.

The vacant WBC Women’s Diamond Super Welterweight Championship will also be on the line in Shields’ first professional fight in her hometown.

The homecoming fight was initially scheduled for August 17 and postponed in June after Shields suffered a minor injury to her right knee while doing roadwork.

Shields vs. Habazin is promoted by Salita Promotions. Tickets for the live event go on sale today/Tuesday, August 6 at 2 p.m. ET and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com and at the Dort Center box office.

The 24-year-old Shields (9-0, 2 KOs) is a two-division titlist who became the undisputed middleweight champion with a near-shutout victory over Christina Hammer in April on SHOWTIME. In doing so, she joined Terrence Crawford, Jermain Taylor, Bernard Hopkins, Oleksandr Usyk and Cecilia Braekhus as the only fighters to have unified all four major world titles in any weight class (Katie Taylor has since joined the prestigious list).

Now, the Flint star seeks to make even more history in her sixth headlining appearance on SHOWTIME. With a win over Habazin, Shields would become a three-division champion in just 10 bouts, breaking the record of Vasiliy Lomachenko, who accomplished the feat in 12 fights.

“I’m more excited than ever. I’m 100 percent recovered, and I can’t wait to get back in the ring and fight in front of my hometown fans in Flint as undisputed champion of the world,” said Shields. “Having the opportunity to become world champion in a third weight division faster than any man or woman in boxing history will make October 5 a night I will cherish forever. It’s another big step in history, and giant step forward in lifting women’s boxing on the road to equality.”

Habazin (20-3, 7 KOs), of Zagreb, Croatia, is ranked No. 1 by the WBO at 154 pounds. The 29-year-old, who will be making her U.S. debut, won the IBF Welterweight Title over Sabrina Giuliani in 2014. In her next fight, Habazin dropped a unanimous decision to Braekhus in a historic unification bout where Braekhus picked up all four major world title belts. Most recently, Habazin avenged one of only three losses in her career to Eva Bajic in Zagreb.

“It’s an honor and a dream to fight in the U.S. on national television,” Habazin said. “A lot of fighters never get this opportunity in their careers so I know I need to make the most of it. I’ve been training for this fight since June and the postponement has only given me more time to get ready. I intend to put my best effort forward to impress the fans and show that I am for real.

“I am not just coming to fight for a world title, I am fighting for my life and my career. I believe I am the best and now I got the chance to prove that, and there is no better opponent for that than Claressa Shields.”

Shields was the first American boxer in history – male or female – to win consecutive Olympic gold medals. She turned professional following the 2016 Olympics and headlined the first women’s boxing main event in premium television history in just her second professional fight in 2017. Shields became unified women’s super middleweight world champion in just her fourth professional fight, and a two-division champion in her sixth professional contest. She was crowned the undisputed 160-pound champion in her ninth fight, less than three years after turning professional following the 2016 Olympics.

“From Christy Martin and Laila Ali to Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey, and now Claressa Shields, SHOWTIME has long been the pioneer in women’s combat sports,” said Gordon Hall, Executive Producer of SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION. “Without question, Claressa Shields is the face of women’s boxing and we’re excited to present yet another historic milestone in her career as she looks to capture a third division championship in record time. This is Claressa’s sixth appearance on SHOWTIME and yet another test as she continues her personal quest to become the greatest of all time.”

“With the new date, this fight is going to be even more significant,” said Dmitriy Salita, President of Salita Promotions. “Claressa has had time to get 100 percent healthy and in the best shape of her life as she goes down in weight to fight for another historic accomplishment. On the other hand, Ivana has used this extra time to prepare for Claressa both mentally and physically. She has remained in camp throughout the summer as she prepares to come to America to upset Claressa and fulfill what she feels is her destiny. It’s going to be two fighters at the top of their games.”

“October 5 will be a magnificent event for Claressa Shields, for women’s boxing, and for Claressa’s hometown city of Flint,” said Mark Taffet, manager of Claressa Shields. “Claressa continues to shine a beacon of light on the sport, making history in each and every fight and reaching levels previously unimaginable. She is a once in a lifetime athlete and young woman, and if she is victorious on October 5 she will become the fastest man or woman in boxing history to win a world title in a third weight division.”

Barry Tompkins will call the SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION action from ringside with boxing historian Steve Farhood and former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

The undercard for the telecast will be announced in the coming weeks.

FRANK WARREN ANNOUNCES TRIPLE TITLE SHOW AT YORK HALL

FRANK WARREN and Queensberry Promotions return to York Hall on Saturday September 14 with a triple bill of title fights starring some of British boxing’s finest prospects, live on BT Sport.

Croydon’s Sunny Edwards (12-0, 4 KOs) drops down in weight to challenge Mexico’s Hugo Rosendo Guarneros (16-2-2, 8 KOs) for the vacant IBF International flyweight crown at the famous East London venue.

Brad Foster (11-0-1, 4KOS) makes the second defence of his British super bantamweight title against Lucien Reid (8-0-1, 4KOs).

Dec Spelman (16-2, 8KOs) risks his English light-heavyweight championship against Shakan Pitters (12-0, 4KOs).

And, in a magnificent British light-heavyweight title eliminator, expect fireworks when Zak Chelli (7-0, 3KOs) comes up against Kody Davies (9-0, 3 KOs).

Edwards said: “I must be making a name for myself in Mexico because this is the third boxer from there I’ve faced.

“I haven’t looked at him because I say, ‘Yes’ to any opponent I am offered. As long as my trainer Grant Smith is fine with the opponent, I am.”

Edwards who has been campaigning at super-flyweight added: “Going down to flyweight is another new adventure, but I can make the weight nicely and show what I am all about.”

Lichfield’s Foster, 21, won the British title by beating Josh Wale on points in March before stopping Ashley Lane in the final round at Stevenage in May.

The former kick boxer now faces the challenge from accomplished former amateur star Reid.

“He is a good fighter and I don’t expect anything less with him fighting me for the British title,” said the champion of his challenger.

“He’s had a good amateur background and knows how to fight, so I will have to be at my best and I know I will win on the night.”

Reid, who recently teamed up with new trainer Alan Smith in Bromley said: “I now have the perfect team to capitalise and winning this title will mean so much.

“Brad is accomplished and well schooled, but I have boxed his style and every other one all over the world as an amateur. That will be the difference in this fight.”

Spelman will be seeking revenge after losing to Pitters last November in a Ultimate Boxxer competition, which his rival eventually won.

Scunthorpe’s Spelman said: “We fought over three rounds and obviously tasted a bit of each other, so we know what we are both about and it will be interesting. I am looking forward to it.

“That is where I feel comfy over the longer distance. I am mentally strong, I hit hard and carry my power all the way through.”

Birmingham’s Pitters added: “What happened at Ultimate Boxxer counts for nothing and I am not even thinking of that win against Dec.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity and commend Dec for picking me as a defence, because there are easier fights.”

Fulham’s Chelli who never shirks a challenge has now moved up to light-heavyweight.

Last October he beat former amateur star Umar Sadiq on points and in April won the Southern area super-middleweight crown against Jimmy Smith.

Now he comes up against former Team GB elite amateur Davies, who has also made an impressive and unbeaten start in the pro ranks.

Chelli says: ”Basically I am 21 and still growing. The weight was an issue for me in the Umar Sadiq fight and it was an even bigger issue against Jimmy Smith, but I wanted that title.

“I like to have these fights against undefeated boxers. It is exciting and it is what the public want. They don’t want a predictable fight, do they?

Emerging Welsh prospect Davies, 25, added: “I’m over the moon with this fight being made.

“Thanks to SJAM & Frank Warren For making it happen. Everyone is finally gonna see what a focused, motivated Kody Davies is capable of, and it’s far more than domestic level.

“This is a nice little stepping stone for me and a nice route to burst onto bigger title fights.”

Also in action on the talent stacked bill Harvey Horn (6-0, 2KOs), Boy Jones Jr (18-3-1, 8KOs), Jake Pettitt (6-0, 1KO), James Branch Jr (5-0, 1KO), Mark Chamberlain (3-0, 2KOs), Umar Sadiq (6-1, 3KOs), Caoimhin Agyako (4-0, 1KO) Mickey Burke Jr (1-0) and Chris Bourke (4-0, 4KOs)

Tickets are on sale via www.ticketmaster.co.uk. Prices £40 – Unreserved Floor, £50 – Unreserved Balcony, £60 – Reserved Floor.

Unbeaten Ortiz quickly earning praise as championship contender

Lincoln, RI (Aug. 6, 2019) — There’s a time in every boxer’s career when he or she hopes to take the leap from prospect to contender.

While there’s no set timetable for when a fighter is supposed to climb the next rung on the ladder, most will know when their time has come. With that designation comes additional responsibilities and expectations. Fights are more competitive, training camps are usually longer and more exhausting and, for the select few lucky enough to get this far, the paydays are much brighter.

At 11-0, Worcester, MA, lightweight Jamaine Ortiz is still considered a prospect by most, but the reigning WBC Youth World Champion doesn’t plan on staying in that lane for too long. If Ortiz has his way, he’ll be in the conversation among the sport’s top 135-pounders within the next year and a half, if he isn’t already.

“My job is to be ready for that opportunity,” said Ortiz, who returns Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel in the co-main event of CES Boxing’s summer-ending showcase at the Event Center.

“I have big goals. I want to go up that ladder. I’m not just content with that WBC belt. My main mission is to win multiple world titles.”

Since capturing the WBC Youth crown in February with a convincing win over previously-unbeaten Oxnard, CA, native Ricardo Quiroz, Ortiz may have officially made the leap from prospect to contender. The belt he wears now was worn by some of the sport’s best, from Canelo Alvarez to Chad Dawson, and being part of the hierarchy of WBC champions usually results in instant gratification in the form of higher rankings and notoriety.

Eight weeks after beating Quiroz, Ortiz returned to Twin River and made quick work of Brazilian Vitor Jones, stopping the veteran by first-round knockout. Now he faces another relatively unknown international standout in Romain Couture (8-1-1, 4 KO), a budding prospect from France who fights on U.S. soil for the first time.

Tickets start at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com or www.showclix.com. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET and the first fight begins at 7.

For Ortiz, these last few months have provided unrivaled peace of mind, specifically now that he has overcome the hand injuries that kept him out of action for most of 2018. Rest and recovery allowed him to avoid surgery, and he returned with a bang in February to beat Quiroz following a nine-month layoff, eschewing the tune-up fight most boxers demand after such a long time away from the ring.

Ortiz is a rare breed, a fighter who knows he can’t be the best unless he beats the best. That mentality carried him through his amateur career when he won more than 100 fights and earned a trip to the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials in Nevada. As a pro, he continues to move forward, stepping up the level of competition each time, provided most lightweights in his path don’t try to avoid him.

“Right now, I feel like I don’t have the spotlight I want yet, so whoever is in front of me, I’m going to knock down until I get there,” Ortiz said. “I know a lot of people want the belt, so I have to stay focused.”

The 23-year-old Ortiz is aware of his surroundings and knows who currently owns that spotlight in the 135- and even the 140-pound divisions, prime contenders such as Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney, both of whom Ortiz envisions himself fighting in the near future. He’s also wary of the upsets this year that have turned the sport on its ear, so he’s cautious of getting too far ahead of himself or overlooking any of his opponents regardless of their experience.

“Anything can happen. This is boxing,” Ortiz said. “I don’t let up on anyone. Regardless of what happened in February and with me winning the title, my work ethic hasn’t changed one bit. I still train hard. Now I’m just more focused.”

As an apprentice carpenter and member of the Local 107 carpenter’s union, Ortiz has flexibility with his job that allows him to take time off when necessary in preparation for a fight, a luxury most fighters don’t have. He’s reached the point in his career where he understand he needs to put everything he has into boxing in order to reach the lofty goals he’s set for himself.

Some may still consider him a prospect, but as he continues to mow down one opponent after another, it’s hard to look at the hard-hitting, elusive Ortiz as a serious contender in the 135-pound division.

“When my time comes, I’m going to put on a show,” Ortiz said. “I just finished one of the best camps I’ve ever had. I’m pain-free for the first time in a while. If I want to be the best, I have to prove it. Whatever competition is in front of me, I’m ready for it.”

In the co-main event, WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion Jamaine Ortiz (11-0, 6 KOs) of Worcester, MA, puts his unbeaten record on the line in an eight-round showdown against French challenger Romain Couture (8-1-1, 4 KOs), who makes his United States debut.

A potential showstopper between unbeaten super lightweight prospects Elijah Peixoto (1-0, 1 KO) of East Providence, RI, and 26-year-old “Slick Hands” Carlos Otero (2-0) of Tampa highlights the preliminary card. Peixoto debuted earlier this year in grand fashion with a knockout win over Carlos Galindo. Otero, a decorated amateur much like Peixoto, returns from a two-year layoff. Worcester, MA, welterweight Nicholas Briggs (4-0, 3 KOs), also unbeaten, returns to face Macon, GA, native Bryan Goldsby (5-13), a veteran of 18 professional bouts.

Petchdam Could Be In For The Toughest Title Defense

Petchdam Petchyindee Academy, one of the brightest stars in martial arts, will defend his ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship in a homecoming bout at ONE: DREAMS OF GOLD on 16 August at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Petchdam is set to face Dutch-Moroccan kickboxer Ilias Ennahachi in which could be the stiffest challenge he has faced since he won the title. Ennahachi, who recently signed a two-year deal with ONE Championship, isn’t intimidated by Petchdam and is hoping to disappoint Thai fans.

Ennahachi is an athlete on the rise, so it’s easy to see how he caught the eye of ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong and other pundits. Earlier this year, Combat Press ranked him in the Top 10 in the world.

Ennahachi has compiled a record of 29-2 throughout his career. He’s not known for his one-strike power like Petchdam, but Ennahachi’s skills are just as efficient. His skills have led him to world titles in 2016 with BLADE and Enfusion, and the World Fighting League in 2018.

During his time with Enfusion, Ennahachi successfully defended his title three times. Most recently, Ennahachi scored a second-round knockout win over Madani Belhaddad in April — which became proof that he belongs with ONE Championship.

Ennahachi could match up well with Petchdam because, unlike most of the champion’s opponents, length won’t be an issue. Ennahachi stands 5’10, and his legs cover a ton of ground with kicks. He is also sturdy enough to absorb big shots, losing only just one of his matches by stoppage which happened five years ago.

Petchdam is aware of the challenge Ennahachi presents, but winning in his hometown is also at the back of his mind.

“I’m feeling a little bit of pressure because I don’t want to lose in Thailand,” Petchdam said. “It is also my first time fighting the main event, and it’s a World Title defense too.”

“I want to ask the Thai people to come and cheer for me once again. In my last fight, the support I received from Thai people helped me win. I could hear them from the audience cheering me on – it motivated me to keep going,” he added.

Competing in front of the home crowd is a double-edged sword. The energy of the fans can motivate an athlete, but it can also bring them pressure. Petchdam has proven in the past he can rise to the occasion, but Ennahachi will do everything to put a halt to his title reign.

Fractured Hand Forces Carl Frampton Out of Saturday’s ESPN+ Main Event at Liacouras Center

PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 5, 2019) — Carl “The Jackal” Frampton was forced to drop out of Saturday’s featherweight main event against Emmanuel Dominguez at the Liacouras Center after fracturing the fifth metacarpal in his left hand. The injury occurred Monday morning at the fight hotel when someone knocked over a concrete structure, which then struck Frampton’s hand.

The Jason Sosa-Haskell Lydell Rhodes 10-round super featherweight bout has been elevated to the main event, while middleweight knockout artist Edgar Berlanga (11-0, 11 KOs) will face Gregory Trenel (11-4-2, 3 KOs) in the eight-round co-feature. Two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez’s highly anticipated pro debut — a four-rounder at featherweight versus Adan Gonzales — will round out the tripleheader, which begins at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Said Frampton: “I’m gutted, gutted for the people that paid their hard-earned money to make the trip to support me. I’ve spent the summer away from my family training for the fight, all a waste now because of this freak accident.”

All ticket refunds can be made at the Liacouras Center Box Office, Ticketmaster.com or call 1-800-745-3000. Ticket refunds will be valid until Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Peltz Boxing, remaining tickets priced at $100, $55 and $35 (not including applicable fees) are on sale now and can be purchased at the Liacouras Center Box Office and www.liacourascenter.com, or by calling Peltz Boxing at 215-765-0922.

New England super featherweights Toka “T Nice” Kahn Clary (26-2, 18 KOs), of Providence, RI, and Irvin Gonzalez (12-1, 9 KOs), of Worcester, MA, will clash in the 10-round main event. Victorious in seven of his last eight starts, the 27-year-old Clary, a native of Liberia, returns following a fifth-round knockout of Carlos Manuel Reyes on May 17, also at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Prior to the Reyes stoppage, Clary lost a hotly contested 12-round unanimous decision to world ranked and undefeated contender Kid Galahad on October 20, 2018, in Boston, MA. Unbeaten through his first 12 fights as a professional, the 23-year-old Gonzalez is looking to rebound from his only loss to Elijah Pierce on May 17.

In a 10-round women’s world championship bout, Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon-Espinosa (11-1, 6 KOs), of Lindenhurst, NY, will defend her WBA super middleweight world title against undefeated contender Shemelle Baldwin (3-0-1, 2 KOs), of Newark, DE. Napoleon-Espinosa will be making the second defense of her world title that she captured on March 3, 2018, with a 10-round decision versus previously undefeated Femke Hermans in front of her legion of fans at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. She followed that with a 10-round world title defense against Hannah Rankin on August 4, 2018, at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. Napoleon-Espinosa began 2019 with a second-round knockout of Eva Bajic on April 10, in New York City. Before turning pro in November 2017, Baldwin was a Washington D.C. Golden Gloves champion, a three-time Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champion, and a 2015 Olympic Trials semi-finalist.

Undefeated heavyweight Stephan “Big Shot” Shaw (11-0, 8 KOs), of St. Louis, MO, will square off against southpaw Johnnie Langston (7-1, 3 KOs), of Sarasota, FL, in an eight-round contest. The 6’4″ Shaw is determined to keep up the momentum from his last two impressive knockout victories against Aaron Chavers last October and Donovan Dennis in March. Following a stellar amateur career that included 2013 PAL and USA National Championships titles, Shaw turned professional in December 2013. Langston will seek to return to the win column following a majority decision loss to Lyubomyr Pinchuk in July.

Fazliddin Meliboev, a 22-year-old from Kokand, Uzbekistan, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions Inc., will make his pro debut in a six-round bout. The southpaw Meliboev was an amateur star who was an Uzbekistan National champion in 2015. He won silver medals at the 2017 Great Silk Way Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the 2016 Chinggis Khan Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. He also participated in the World Series of Boxing, winning all three of his bouts.

Southpaw junior middleweight prospect Hurshidbek “Hershey” Normatov (8-0, 3 KOs), of Andijan, Uzbekistan, and now based in Brooklyn, NY, will compete in his first eight-rounder. He has defeated two previously unbeaten prospects in Alexis Gaytan and Nicklaus Flaz and, in his last fight, decisioned 9-1-1 Calvin Metcalf on April 10. As an amateur, Normatov accumulated a 190-40 record and won the European Amateur National Championships in 2014.

Former WBC middleweight world champion Kali “KO Mequinonoag” Reis (15-7-1, 5 KOs), of Providence, RI, and Helen “Iron Lady” Joseph (16-3-2, 10 KOs), of New Haven, CT, a former IBF Inter-Continental featherweight titlist, will compete in separate six-round bouts. Last May, Reis clashed with undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus in the first women’s bout telecast on HBO, losing a hard-fought 10-rounder in Carson, CA. Reis has returned with two wins in a row, most recently scoring a sixth-round stoppage of Szilvia Szabados on October 19, 2018, in Washington, D.C. On August 3, Joseph dropped then decisioned Hungarian Edina Kiss over six rounds in Brooklyn, NY.

Popular welterweight prospect Adrian “Tonka” Sosa (11-0, 9 KOs), of Lawrence, MA, will see action in a scheduled six-rounder. The 24-year-old Sosa has scored four knockouts in a row following his decision victory against previously unbeaten prospect Khiry Todd last year. Sosa was a 2014 New England Golden Gloves champion and turned pro in July 2016 following an 18-2 amateur career.

Two local newcomers will be featured with Puerto Rican lightweight Nelson “Chino” Perez (1-0, 1KO), of Marlboro, MA, and Bridgeport, CT, super featherweight Jacob Marrero (3-0, 2 KOs) each boxing in four-round bouts. Compiling an amateur record of 58-9, Marrero was a 2016 New England Golden Gloves Champion, a five-time Connecticut Silver Gloves Champion and a five-time Connecticut Junior Olympics Champion.

The fights will be streamed live on RingTV.com and on Facebook Watch via the Golden Boy Fight Night Page beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. DANIEL DUBOIS AND NICOLA ADAMS PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren today held a press conference at BT Tower to announce major title fights for Daniel Dubois and Nicola Adams at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Friday September 27, live on BT Sport.

Londoner Dubois (12-0, 11KOs) takes on unbeaten Ebenezer Tetteh (19-0, 16KOs) for the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title providing the Ghanaian comes through a warm-up on August 10.

The bout was mandated by the Commonwealth Boxing Council after Joe Joyce relinquished the title.

Adams who was elevated to WBO female flyweight champion last week, by virtue of her Interim title status will be in world title action, possibly in a unification showdown.

There is a tentative agreement for Adams (5-0, 3KOs) to meet the winner of the August 16 clash between Argentina’s IBF World champion Leonela Paola Yudica and Mexican Isabel Millan, who Nicola beat for interim title — providing the winner comes through unscathed.

If the winner is unavailable through injury for the London date next month, Adams will defend her WBO crown at the Royal Albert Hall and her following fight will be a unification match.

Here are a selection of quotes.

FRANK WARREN
“Daniel is one of the youngest boxers to ever win the British heavyweight title and the way he has beaten people tells you he is going places. His next fight is his 13th fight and if he wins he will have won seven belts and I can’t think of too many heavyweights who have done that so soon and gone into ten and 12 rounders so young in their career. You have to remember he only had seven senior bouts as an amateur. He still has a long way to go and there are things he needs to work on, but his trainer Martin Bowers has done a fantastic job. This isn’t a 100 metre race. He has got to be equipped not to just fight for a world title, but win it and defend it. Tetteh is banger and if he is anything like the last Ghanian that Daniel fought, Richard Lartey you are going to get entertainment. Daniel is for real and the most exciting young heavyweight I’ve been involved with. You feel there is a sense of anticipation and electricity when he gets in the ring.
We have got to get Nicola back on it. She has history with two Olympic golds and this is her chance to hopefully unify in what will be a historic night with the first ever world title fight between two women boxers at the Royal Albert Hall. She has got to go out there and show everyone what she can do. I want to see her fighting regularly. The Royal Albert Hall is a fantastic venue. I call it a posh York Hall.”

DANIEL DUBOIS
“I’m following in some pretty big footsteps like Lennox Lewis and Muhammad Ali who fought at the Royal Albert Hall, although Ali boxed exhibitions. Myself fighting there is testament to the work I put in to be successful. I want to climb to the top and be world heavyweight champion. The only way to do that is to come through these guys like Tetteh and win well. I feel the best is yet to come. Beating Nathan Gorman was a good win. Some things I did well like pumping the jab out and I was very determined. My overall strength and ability was too much for him. I feel I’m getting close to my goal of being world champion. It’s nice that the hard work I put in is getting rewards. I’m on a journey and loving it. If he is like another Ghanaian I boxed, Richard Lartey I need to sharpen up on a few things and I might get him out of there quicker.”

NICOLA ADAMS
“I really want to do this. It has been my ambition since I turned professional to unify the division. I want to put on a show. I couldn’t ask for more than boxing at the Royal Albert Hall. Muhammad Ali was my hero growing up and to be able to box at the same arena as he did is special. I plan on winning and unifying would be two belts for the price of one. I just want to keep collecting and getting all the titles. I am learning all the time, cut out a lot of my amateur traits and it’s been a learning curve. I am improving and taking it to the next level. If my opponent is Yudica I know how tough it will be, but I have a A, B, C, D and E game plan. I will have an answer for everything she throws.”

Tickets for the September 27th bill at the Royal Albert Hall will be available to purchase from www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.royalalberthall.com on pre-sale sale this Wednesday (August 7) & on general sale from 1pm this Friday (August 9). Prices £40, £50, £75, £100, £150 Ringside.

Time is now for Cusumano to take giant step forward

Lincoln, RI (Aug. 5, 2019) — Juiseppe Cusumano feels as close as he ever has to reaching that magic moment in the sport of boxing most fighters can only dream of.

From his wild win over Brendan Barrett in February to his trip to Alabama a month later to spar with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, Cusumano (18-2, 16 KOs) knows greatness is at the doorstep. The ball is in his court, and he’s ready to take that next step Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel.

The hard-hitting heavyweight returns to the ring for the first time in six months Aug. 9 when he faces Quincy, MA, vet Steve Vukosa (11-1, 4 KOs) for the vacant WBC USNBC title in the eight-round main event of CES Boxing’s summer-ending spectacular at the Event Center.

The significance of winning a WBC regional title isn’t lost on Cusumano; as a historian of the sport, he recalls that Wilder captured the WBC Continental Americas title — a similar stepping stone — in 2013 and, within three fights, earned his shot at the world championship two years later against Bermane Stiverne.

This is a potential life-changing opportunity and the 31-year-old Cusumano has ensured he’s in the best shape of his life both mentally and physically knowing what’s at stake Friday night.

“These are all blessings. A lot of people in this sport wish they could have these opportunities and now I’m here getting my shot,” Cusumano said. “I went through hell in this sport and almost gave it up a few times.

“That’s why I say, ‘Never give up on your dreams.’ Now they’re starting to come true for me.”

Tickets begin at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com or www.showclix.com. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET and the first fight begins at 7.

Two and a half years ago, Cusumano was close to walking away. He had dealt with bad management, depression and a bout with alcoholism, all of which kept him out of the ring and away from the sport he loved. Upon signing with CES Boxing and promoter Jimmy Burchfield Sr., he made the effort to change up his routine and work on his conditioning to get himself back into fight shape.

Since June of 2017, Cusumano has gone 8-1 under CES’ guidance and is now a serious contender in the heavyweight division. When looking at past fighters who’s won the USNBC belt, some notable names stand out. Chris Arreola went on to fight for two world titles after capturing the USNBC championship in 2012. Same for Stiverne and Eric Molina, former USNBC title-holders who eventually faced Wilder for the heavyweight championship of the world.

So why not Cusumano? If he’s successful Friday, his shot at Wilder — or any of the current heavyweight title-holders — could be around the corner. And forget what the odds might say; few gave Andy Ruiz Jr. a chance against Anthony Joshua and now Ruiz is the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion after flattening Joshua in a stunning upset in June.

“That would be amazing. We could shock the world,” Cusumano said. “I’m at a loss for words because being put in this position is such a blessing. It’s finally here.”

No one other than Tyson Fury, who survived a late knockdown in November to earn a draw with Wilder, has come close to dethroning the current WBC champion, but Cusumano had the opportunity to briefly test the waters in camp earlier this year with Wilder and felt he learned a lot in just a short amount of time.

“It really showed me I have a chance to compete with the top guys. I held my own,” Cusumano said. “I hit him with some great shots. There were a few times they told me to calm down in there. I did pretty well. He does hit hard, though – especially in those 10-ounce gloves.”

Before he can dream of a money-making showdown with Wilder, Cusumano must first set his sights on the elusive, enigmatic Vukosa, a 6-foot-4 southpaw who at one point early in his career was considered one of the country’s top amateur heavyweights. Vukosa tried with the legendary Freddie Roach in the early 2000s, but suffered a knee injury so severe he decided to retire.

Twelve years later, he put aside his daytime job as a bus driver and returned in 2014 to dethrone Providence, RI, native and former Olympian Jason Estrada, an unexpected upset given his layoff. Vukosa is now attempting a second comeback following a triumphant return in July and has the speed and the slick boxing technique to give a heavy-handed heavyweight like Cusumano fits once the bell rings.

This, however, is a hungrier Cusumano, one who is itching to get back in the ring after six months off. He’s smarter, too, understanding he can no longer train at 31 the same way he did when he was 21. So he’s working more now on maintenance and focusing on the health of his joints, trading his dumbbells for swimming weights to improve his endurance and flexibility.

“I think my power has increased, but I need to be more patient, too,” he said. “I’m doing more pad work, staying calm. I usually just jump on people when the bell rings, but with some of these bigger guys you can’t do that all the time. There are times I have to set things up. I’ve been doing that a lot.”

Cusumano is also more aware of his surroundings. In addition to technique tips and the overall experience of being in a championship fight camp, Cusumano learned a little bit about how to be a professional if and when he reaches that next level. Wilder is a flamboyant champion and an outspoken advocate for the sport, but, Cusumano said, the unbeaten Alabama native generally lays low outside of the gym. His business-like approach is something all fighters can learn from, especially one like Cusumano who’s confident his time is next.

Friday could be the start of something big for the heavy-handed Sicilian if he can keep his win streak alive.

“I feel good. I’m hungrier. I’m more motivated,” Cusumano said. “I’m looking forward to this opportunity.”

In Friday’s co-main event, WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion Jamaine Ortiz (11-0, 6 KOs) of Worcester, MA, puts his unbeaten record on the line in an eight-round showdown against French challenger Romain Couture (8-1-1, 4 KOs), who makes his United States debut.

DUBOIS AND ADAMS IN ACTION AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL

DANIEL DUBOIS will bid to add the Commonwealth heavyweight title to his belt collection and WBO female flyweight champion Nicola Adams will be in world title action when boxing returns to the Royal Albert Hall on Friday September 27, live on BT Sport.

British champion Dubois 12-0 (11KOs), who defeated domestic rival Nathan Gorman in a thrilling encounter at the o2 Arena in July, will seek to win an incredible seventh title in just his 13th professional fight when he takes on Ebenezer Tetteh for the vacant Commonwealth crown.

Previous Commonwealth champion Joe Joyce has relinquished the title and the match between Dubois and Tetteh has been mandated by the Commonwealth Boxing Council, subject to the unbeaten Ghanaian successfully coming through a scheduled fight on August 10.

Promoter Frank Warren also has a tentative agreement for Adams to be involved in a unification clash against the winner of the August 16 clash between Argentina’s IBF champion Leonela Paola Yudica and Mexican Isabel Millan, who Nicola beat for interim title – providing the winner comes through unscathed.

If the winner is unavailable through injury for the London date next month, Nicola will defend her WBO crown at the Royal Albert Hall and her next fight will be a unification match.

Tetteh, 19-0 (16KOs), from Accra will be the second Ghanaian opposition attempting to derail Dubois, who stopped the 31-year-old’s countryman Richard Lartey in April to win the WBO Global title.

“This is a natural progression for me because I want to win every title available to me on my way to becoming a world champion,” said Dubois on his latest assignment.

“I have won the Southern Area, English and British titles already, so I am heading down what people call the traditional route, while also gaining international experience and rankings by winning the WBC Youth, WBO European and Global titles.

“So I believe this is the ideal next step for me against an unbeaten fighter with a lot of KOs to his name.

“It should make for an exciting fight at the Royal Albert Hall and I cannot wait to get back there and do my thing.”

Double Olympic champion Adams, 5-0 (3KOs), was upgraded to WBO world champion last month, by virtue of her Interim title holding status, following the removal of Arely Mucino.

The Golden Girl of British boxing will be in world title action at the Royal Albert Hall in the first ever female professional boxing match at the historic London venue.

Warren added: “I am delighted to be taking another top show back to the Royal Albert Hall, which is such a special venue for boxing.

“It is another ideal test for Daniel in fighting for the vacant Commonwealth title against another dangerous opponent from Ghana. If this turns out to be anything like the Richard Lartey fight then the fans are in for a treat.

“The name of the game for Daniel now is for us to keep stepping him up and him picking up experience. It is only a matter of time before he will reach a mandatory position for a world title.

“Nicola is already in possession of a world title and I am sure she will want to confirm her status with a fine performance in the ring.

“It is only onwards and upwards for our Leading Lady now and this world title is just the beginning for her.”

The show will also feature the WBO European super featherweight champion Archie Sharp, middleweight banger Denzel Bentley, heavyweight Jonathan Palata and precocious bantamweight talent Dennis McCann, along with several exciting professional debuts to be announced soon.

Tickets for the September 27th bill at the Royal Albert Hall will be available to purchase from www.ticketmaster.co.uk and www.royalalberthall.com on pre-sale sale this Wednesday (August 7) Wednesday & on general sale from 1pm this Friday (August 9).  Prices £40, £50, £75, £100 £150 – Ringside
