Exciting Light Heavyweight Star Andrzej Fonfara Takes On Hard-Hitting Joe Smith Jr. In Primetime Main Event of Premier Boxing Champions on NBC Saturday, June 18 from UIC Pavilion in Chicago (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT)

CHICAGO (May 13, 2016) – Power-punching fan favorite Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) will enter the ring against no nonsense New Yorker Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith Jr. (21-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday, June 18 in a 10-round primetime battle that headlines Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC from UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Televised coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT and will feature a bantamweight world title rematch that sees current champion Juan Carlos Payano (17-0, 8 KOs) take on three-time U.S. Olympian Rau’shee “Nuke” Warren (13-1, 4 KOs) as they rehash their rivalry that began in August 2015 when Payano won a narrow split-decision to retain his title. Also featured on the telecast is rising star Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (14-0, 10 KOs) who faces powerful Mexican Daniel Sandoval (37-3, 34 KOs) in a super welterweight contest.

“I think that this fight Smith is a great challenge for me and I do not underestimate him,” said Fonfara. “He is young and hungry and he wants to use this fight and my name to show the world his skills. He’s coming to Chicago for victory and glory. I have to show him that I am stronger, more experienced and most importantly, a smarter fighter. I have to win this fight because it will open the door for me to rematch Adonis Stevenson.”

“I’ve been working very hard and for many years towards an opportunity like this,” said Smith Jr. “I am grateful to Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing for helping to get me here. This fight is going to change my life and no one is going to keep me from winning.”

Payano and Warren first fought in Florida where Payano retained his title via split decision with scores of 113-111 twice for him and 115-109 for Warren. The fight featured consistent action and some controversy. Payano was deducted a point in round three while Warren lost two points in round nine for an intentional foul. At the end of the fight, both men raised their hands believing they had won and now they look to settle the score in Chicago.

“I knew this rematch would be offered and it’s been a waiting game since I beat him the first time,” said Payano. “I feel like I won convincingly, but some people feel otherwise. I’m very excited about fighting him again and this time I’ll beat him even more easily. Fighting on NBC is a great privilege and it’s a great place to showcase my talents. I am coming in humbled by this opportunity.”

“I’ve been waiting for this rematch since the moment we got out of the ring the first time,” said Warren. “I’m happy it’s finally coming up on June 18. Until that day is here, there is nothing else on my mind. I’m real sharp right now. I’m going for the knockout. It didn’t go my way last time, but I’m bringing home the belt this time.

“Every fight is big for me, whether I’m televised or not, because I always give it my all,” said Lubin. “But fighting in primetime on NBC is a big opportunity for me and I know it will bring something out of me. I have to perform. It’s up to me to go out and showcase my talent so I can keep moving up the ladder. Daniel Sandoval is a veteran who can prepare me for a world title shot. I’m more than ready and this fight will put me one step closer.”

“This is a very good fight for me and I’m excited,” said Sandoval. “I know if I come to the U.S. and beat Lubin, my name will be big and there will be another great Mexican fighter on the map. I know Lubin is the top prospect in the U.S. right now and a very fast southpaw. He is all the things you wouldn’t want to go up against, but it’s boxing and I’m Mexican. I’ll fight anybody, anytime, anywhere.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Warriors Boxing and Star Boxing, are priced at $201, $101, $61 and $41, not including applicable service charges, and are on sale now. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or UIC Pavilion Box Office at (312) 413-5740. Tickets are also available at www.ticketmaster.com or by visiting the UIC Pavilion Box Office (Thursday or Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.).

“Warriors Boxing is excited to bring PBC on NBC to the Windy City,” said Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing. “Chicago’s favorite son, Andrzej Fonfara, always thrills fans with his non-stop fighting style. Joe Smith Jr. has been destroying his competition in New York and also brings a fan friendly ‘seek-and-destroy’ style to the fight. The main event should be explosive. When you add up-and-coming superstar Erickson Lubin and if Payano vs. Warren II live up to their prior Fight of the Year candidate, it will be a can’t miss night of boxing.”

“I am truly looking forward to this main event,” said Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing. “Smith and Fonfara are both very exciting fighters and I expect a thrilling war. Their styles will have Chicago rocking with enthusiastic Irish fans for Smith and Polish fans for Fonfara. The electric atmosphere will be a treat to everyone watching on NBC and I expect big things from Joe Smith Jr.”

Fonfara returns to the ring after defeating Nathan Cleverly in October at UIC Pavilion in a fight that garnered Fight of the Year consideration and saw a record number of punches landed (936) and thrown (2524) for a light heavyweight fight in CompuBox history. Prior to that, the 28-year-old became the first person to stop Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and lost a decision to world champion Adonis Stevenson in a fight that saw both men hit the canvas. From Warsaw, Poland but training out of Chicago, Fonfara will fight in the Windy City for the 20th time when he enters the ring in primetime on June 18.

Representing Long Island, New York, Smith Jr. will bring his heavy hands to primetime as he looks for his 16th straight victory on June 18. The 26-year-old was a highly decorated amateur who won the 2008 New York Golden Gloves with a victory over Seanie Monaghan. A member of the Local 66 Laborers Union between fights and the oldest of eight siblings, Smith Jr. picked up his most impressive victory of his career so far when he defeated veteran Will Rosinsky in a hotly contested battle in Brooklyn. He followed it up with a second round stoppage of Fabiano Pena in April and is set for his toughest challenge in June.

The two-time Dominican Olympian Payano will defend his title for the second time since winning a technical decision over Anselmo Moreno in September 2014. The accomplished amateur won gold at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean games with victories over McJoe Arroyo and Yoandris Salinas. The unbeaten 32-year-old defeated Jundy Maraon, Jose Silveria and Luis Maldonado on the way to his title shot.

A three-time U.S. Olympian from Cincinnati, Warren is determined to make the most of his second shot at a world title. The 29-year-old turned pro in 2012 and picked up victories over veterans Jose Luis Araiza, Javier Gallo, German Meraz and Jhon Alberto Molina leading up to the first world title shot. Another fighter in veteran trainer Mike Stafford’s stable, Warren was the first member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team to earn a world title shot and will look again to become the first member of that team to capture a world title.

A highly-regarded prospect with an exciting style, the 20-year-old Lubin has burst onto the scene looking to engage and finish opponents early. Fighting out of Orlando, he has already taken down experienced veterans including Orlando Lora, Ayi Bruce, Michael Finney and Norberto Gonzalez. He was sensational in November 2015 when he knocked out Alexis Camacho on NBC and in January he headlined his first card and dominated Jose De Jesus Macias in his first 10-round bout.

A winner of 18 of his last 19 fights, Sandoval enters this fight coming off of stoppage victories over Grady Brewer and Francisco Villanueva. The 25-year-old has won his previous two starts in the U.S. with decision victories over Richard Gutierrez in 2014 and Larry Smith in 2012 and will look to take down the undefeated Lubin on June 18.

STEPHEN SMITH TO MEET BRIZUELA FOR WBC SILVER TITLE AT EVERTON

Stephen Smith will face Daniel Brizuela for the WBC Silver Super-Featherweight title at Goodison Park in Liverpool on Sunday May 29, live on Sky Sports.

Smith gets straight back into action following his fine performance in Connecticut in April where he challenged classy Puerto Rican Jose Pedraza for the IBF World title, and ‘Swifty’ now sets his sights on WBC king Francisco Vargas – but must get past a familiar face in Brizuela on his first step on that path.

Brizuela thrilled fans in Hull in February 2014 when he clashed with Tommy Coyle in a fight of the year contender for the IBF International Lightweight strap, with both men hitting the canvas four times, with three knockdowns in the 11th session that was awarded ‘round of the year’ by ESPN. The Argentine returned to Hull to meet Coyle’s city rival Luke Campbell MBE eight months later, and has since moved down to campaign back at 130lbs.

“It’s a massive bill and I’m thrilled to be a part of it,” said Smith. “I’m coming in on the back of the Pedraza loss but I don’t feel like my confidence has been dented, I think I’ve done 12 good rounds at the highest level with a top World champion and I showed that I belonged there. Hopefully getting back out at Everton and landing the WBC Silver belt will get me a high ranking with the WBC and I can look at landing a shot at the famous green belt as soon as possible.

“I had seven months out from winning the final eliminator through date changes for the Pedraza fight and I don’t need that to happen again. I’ve had a taste of the top level and I want more of it so it’s time to build up more momentum and land that World title.”

Smith’s clash with Brizuela is part of a huge night of action at Goodison Park as diehard Evertonian Tony Bellew faces Ilunga Makabu for the vacant WBC World Cruiserweight title.

Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd faces Pasquale di Silvio for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Lightweight title, Hosea Burton defends his British Light-Heavyweight title against Liverpool man Tony Dodson, Tom Farrell and Kofi Yates clash in an eliminator for the British Super-Lightweight title.

Merseyside Heavyweight favourite David Price is back in action and there’s a host of local talents getting a huge opportunity to impress in JJ Metcalfe, Ged Carroll, Steve Brogan, Craig Glover and Scott Fitzgerald.

Video: Melissa Stark delivers a comprehensive examination of a controversial ruling in men’s amateur boxing, which no longer requires headgear in this summer’s Olympic Games

Amateur star Eric Donovan aims for Pro glory

After a glittering amateur career, Eric Donovan could be forgiven for hanging his mitts up and settling for a life of reminiscing on former glories. However, Donovan, a former Irish international amateur star and European bronze medallist, isn’t most boxers and is set to make his debut in the pro ranks on Saturday, June 25 at the National Stadium, Dublin.

For almost a decade, Donovan ranked amongst Europe’s top amateur boxers, chalking up five Irish Elite National titles from Bantamweight through to Lightweight, a Four Nations gold, European Union bronze medal and a bronze at the 2010 European championships in Moscow. Now, the popular boxer has decided to take his vest off and punch-for-pay on a show co-promoted by FS Promotions and Ricky Hatton .

Discussing his decision to return to the ring Donovan, a father of two boys, explained,”I realised I hadn’t achieved my full potential in boxing and still had a lot to offer. The thought of turning professional provided me with a lot of motivation and after a number of discussions I have decided to challenge myself and make the jump into pro boxing.”

“I was disappointed not to make it to the Olympics, but a season fighting in the World Series of Boxing for the Astana Arlans gave me a new lease of life in the ring. Living and training out in Kazakhstan with some great boxers opened up my eyes and it was great to be part of the group that won the WSB Team competition”, explained Donovan.

The Athy fighter, who holds wins in the amateur code over current professionals such as Tom Stalker, James Tennyson, Patrick Hyland, Declan Geraghty and over the 2009 ‘AIBA Boxer of the Year’ Dominico Valentino, is spurred on by the achievements of many of his previous opponents.

“There is so much boxing on TV these days and I get to watch a lot of guys that I have fought, and often beaten. Their victories have encouraged me to go for it. Professional boxing is a tough game but I’m prepared for the challenge. The level of support has been amazing and I have already had to go back to the promoters and ask for more tickets because I sold out the ones I was given.”

Donovan has been keeping himself busy out of the ring, having recently completed a Diploma in Counselling, he is the Sports Ambassador for ‘I’m A Friend’ (www.imafriend.com) and as well as running a successful boxercise and fitness business, he has established himself as a boxing analyst and commentator for Irish state broadcaster, RTE.

“I was the first Irish Elite amateur champion from St. Michael’s Boxing Club in Athy and I would love to bring home the first Irish professional title to the club as well.”

“But I wont stop there, I am a quick learner and very adaptable and I am aiming to have an Irish title within five fights. Then set my sights are on a European title and a world title fight.

“I look at guys like Anthony Crolla, Ricky Burns and Terry Flanagan and think to myself that they haven’t got anything I don’t have, so I will be looking to achieve world honours like they have.”

“I would like to thank my sponsors Sean Corry and the Healthy Living Centre in Athy, as well as my club coach, Dominic O’Rourke for all his support,” added Donovan.

The Kildare fighter makes his debut on a packed bill at the National Stadium fittingly titled ‘The Future’, and will feature alongside some of some of Ireland’s brightest boxing prospects including unbeaten Derry banger Tyrone McCullagh, debutants Chris Blaney and Jay Byrne. Intriguingly four potential future opponents for Donovan have also been added to the show, including an undefeated trio of Paul Hyland Jnr, Ciaran Bates and Stephen Carroll as well as experienced former Prizefighter contestant Michael Devine.

Tickets for Eric’s debut at the National Stadium, Dublin on Saturday, June 25 range from €35 seated and €50 ringside, and are available in Athy from The Healthy Living Centre, 2 Duke Street, Athy, Co. Kildare. Alternatively, call Laura on 0867949406.

Bellew’s World title bout with Makabu is part of a huge night of action on Merseyside as Stephen Smith gets the chance to bounce back from his IBF World title challenge in Connecticut as he fights for the vacant WBC Silver title.

Lucas Browne B-Sample tests positive; stripped of WBA Heavyweight belt

The B-Sample for Lucas Browne after testing positive after WBA Heavyweight title winning effort against Ruslan Chagaev in Russia came back positive and he was stripped of he newly won title.

“I’m leaving everything to my lawyer,” Browne said in a statement. “I thank everyone for their support, especially the people and fans of Australia.”

“Browne did challenge the ‘B’ sample, but there were no flaws in the VADA process,” WBA president Gilberto Mendoza told ESPN.com. “It was disappointing since he was the first heavyweight champion born in Australia.”

“The minimum suspension is appropriate due to the circumstances of the negative pre-bout testing only one week before the bout and Browne’s arguments relating to the minimal levels detected and lack of any logical competitive advantage,” the WBA wrote in its ruling.

“Notwithstanding, Browne participated in the bout with a prohibited substance in his system, and regardless of any arguments to the contrary, athletes do not always act rationally or logically when it comes to striving for that competitive edge in competition, whether real or merely perceived.

“Whether Browne knowingly or voluntarily took the prohibited substance is of no consequence concerning the no contest ruling and only carries any weight for purposes of determining the suspension period. The boxer and his representatives are ultimately responsible for what the boxer ingests.”

The big-hitting County Co-Mayo man had his opponent down three times in the opening round before the referee waved the contest off at 1 minute and 17 seconds.

VIJENDER SINGH WTKO3 (2:00) VS. ANDRZEJ SOLDRA
8 X 3 Minute Rounds International Middleweight Contest
Indian ring sensation Vijender Singh continued his march towards a huge homecoming fight in India with another explosive knockout win over Poland’s Anderzej Soldra. The big-hitting man from the Bhiwani district in Haryana completely outclassed Soldra before the referee waved-off the contest two minutes into the third round.

All-action Singh had his man down inside the first round with a massive right hand. Soldra did well to recover and survived the first round. It was more of the same in the second round as knockout merchant Singh went looking for yet another blockbuster finish.

Red-hot Singh dominated throughout the bout, landing damaging combos at will. Poland’s Soldra struggled to land any meaningful shots of his own and did well to make it to the third round. 30 year-old Singh was teeing off at will before referee Mark Lyson finally stopped the bout to save Soldra from taking anymore punishment.

Speaking after the fight Singh said: “This guy came here to fight me and gave as good as he got but my class was too much for him. I was landing with powerful shots and he couldn’t handle them. It’s another win and another step on my journey to the top of the world middleweight scene.”

He added: “Every fight is important for me. I’ve shown everyone in the UK and back home in India what I’m capable of once again and I’m excited for the future. With the backing of Francis Warren and everyone in my corner the sky is the limit.”

JACK FLATLEY WTKO1 (2:53) VS. VALENTIN STOYCHOV
4 X 3 Minute Rounds International Middleweight Contest
Bolton boy Jack Flately blew away Bulgaria’s Valentin Stoychov inside the opening round to claim his fourth professional victory. Backed by a vocal Bolton crowd Flatley tore into Stoychov from the very first bell. It was all over before it begun as Flatley finished off the Bulgarian with a punishing body shot 2 minutes and 53 seconds into round one.

DALE COYNE WPTS4 (39-38) VS. CRISTIAN HOSKIN GOMEZ
4 X 3 Minute Rounds Super-Middleweight Contest
Steve Maylett-trained super-middleweight prospect Dayle Coyne outpointed Plymouth’s Cristian Hoskin Gomez 39-38 to pick up his fourth pro win in an evenly contested bout. The flame-haired Manchester Super-Middleweight grew into the fight and landed some punishing body shots on Gomez. Both men gave a good account of themselves but it was Coyne who edged the contest, landing more accurately on Gomez.

ZELFA BARRETT WTKO2 (1:52) VS. CHRIS ADAWAY
6 X 3 Minute Rounds Lightweight Contest
Red-hot Manchester lightweight prospect Zelfa Barrett earned an explosive stoppage win over Plymouth’s Chris Adaway to claim his tenth professional win at Bolton’s Macron Stadium.
Barrett put Adaway down in the first round with a huge right hand shot that landed on the bell. Adaway beat the count but it was more of the same in the second round as ‘Brown Flash’ continued to pick and time his shots.
It was all over in the third round after the brave Adaway was dropped for a third time. Adaway did his best to defend himself from Barrett’s punishing shots but the Mancunian’s precision and power proved too much for him to handle.

MACAULAY MCGOWAN WPTS8 (78-74) VS. CHRIS JENKINSON
8 X 3 Minute Rounds Super-Welterweight Contest
21 year-old McCauley McGowan outpointed Bolton’s Chris Jenkinson 78-74 to pick up the tenth pro win of his promising career. McGowan was up against an experienced operator in Jenkinson who made him work hard for his win. Jenkinson repeatedly forced Wythenshawe’s McGowan to dig deep, tagging his opponent with a series of solid head shots in the fourth. Former England Youth rep McGowan took hold of the bout in the latter stages as Jenkinson finally began to tire and came away with a hard-fought victory.

Canelo – Khan does around 600,000 PPV’s

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, last weekend’s Canelo Alvarex – Amir Khan fight drew a reported 600,000 Pay Per View Buys.

“It looks like it will be around 600,000 buys,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “We’re extremely happy about it. If you think about it, Canelo has had the top two pay-per-views of the last four [major] pay-per-views.”

“It’s the changing of the guard,” De La Hoya said about Alvarez, the 25-year-old Mexican star many view as the face of boxing in the post Mayweather/Pacquiao era.

“The fight did way more than that,” he said. “We know that for a fact. The numbers are still coming in, and it could be over or a little under, but it will be around 600,000.”

“The future is that the sky’s the limit for Canelo,” De La Hoya said. “He is on his way to breaking Floyd’s pay-per-view records. We are extremely proud of the work we have done at Golden Boy Promotions, but when you have a special product like Canelo, the sky is the limit. And Amir did his part. A lot of people were saying it wouldn’t be a good fight, but Amir and Canelo both came to fight, both gave everything they had, and it was a good, exciting fight, and people got their money’s worth.”

“Like I promised at the [post-fight] press conference, I called Loeffler on Sunday, and we’re going to continue talks,” De La Hoya said. “We will continue our conversations and see what we come up with. But Canelo will fight in September. We just opened up the conversations. Loffler respects the fact that Canelo just got home to Guadalajara and will take a few days off. But I know we’re under the gun with the WBC situation.”

But will the fight happen?

“Canelo wants to break records,” De La Hoya said. “He wants to be a legend. He wants to take risks. He wants to dare to be great.”

Just Say Nyet: Wilder’s biggest victory would be a boycott of Russia

By Norm Frauenheim-
DEONTAY WILDER
Deontay Wilder, an emerging champion and a compelling personality, wants to make history. Maybe, he should just make a statement, instead.

Wilder is about to leave for Moscow and become the first American heavyweight champion to defend his title there on May 21 against Alexander Povetkin in a risky venture complicated by ongoing disclosures of Russia’s systematic doping.

Depending on the source and based on a very big assumption that all will be on the up-and-up, the fight is a toss-up. Wilder might win. Might lose. But he would score a victory for everybody – boxers, skaters, skiers, sprinters and swimmers – if he just said, hell no, he won’t go until the Russians clean up their act.

What would he have to lose? Plenty, at first. He’d lose a paycheck. He’d risk lawsuits and his title. The World Boxing Council probably would have no choice but to strip him of the belt. Then, there are crazies in the boxing crowd who would question his guts and his promise to knock out Povetkin.

A Wilder victory on Russian scorecards would have to go down as a contender for Upset of the Year. After all, this is a country that, according to the New York Times, conducted a urine exchange – dirty for clean — though a hole in the wall at the Sochi Olympics.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/13/sports/russia-doping-sochi-olympics-2014.html?_r=0

Yet despite Russia’s Hole In The Wall Gang, there have been no criminal charges while the country continues to move forward on plans for the 2018 World Cup.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/apr/08/russian-doping-scandal-no-criminal-charges-sports-minister

http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/russian-doping-scandals-won-t-impact-2018-world-cup-preparations-116051200324_1.html

The fight will happen two weeks after the WBC announced its Clean Boxing Program, year-round testing that will be administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association President Dr. Margaret Goodman.

Wilder Promoter Lou DiBella said Wednesday during a conference call that testing has been underway for seven to eight weeks. However, DiBella also said he would have preferred to have had the testing begin earlier.

The unfolding scandal probably means the Russians will be very careful not to exchange urine samples like shots of vodka before opening bell next week. The world is watching. But that’s not the point.

Thus far, we’ve heard from bureaucrats representing all of the world’s sporting acronyms. We’ve heard threats to ban Russia’s track-and-field athletes from this summer’s Brazil Olympics. Blah, blah, blah. It’s bupkis, or business as usual after the fight. We’ve yet to hear from an athlete in a substantive way. Enter Wilder, who has a chance to say and do something that – long term – would stand as a courageous triumph.

It wouldn’t be the equivalent of the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics for Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan. Over time, the boycott, ordered by then-President Jimmy Carter, has been judged to be a mistake. Athletes were caught in the middle, forced to pay a price for an international confrontation they didn’t create.

But state-run doping is all about the athletes. It puts their integrity, livelihood and health in jeopardy.

The heavyweights have a rich history of making a real difference. Jack Johnson broke the color line before Jackie Robinson, becoming the first African-American to win the heavyweight title during an era that spawned The Great White Hope. Joe Louis knocked out Germany’s Max Schmeling in a 1938 rematch that came to symbolize the coming world war between democracy and fascism. Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title and license when he refused to be drafted because of his opposition to Viet Nam.

They are remembered for how they responded when confronted by events, each in their own time. It’s Wilder’s time.

Tabiti fighting to get into cruiserweight title mix on ShoBox

By Norm Frauenheim-
Andrew Tabiti
Andrew Tabiti, a Floyd Mayweather Sr, trained fighter, hopes to take some of the snoozer out of cruiser against Keith Tapia Friday night in the 200-pound division tonight at Las Vegas Sam’s Hotel and Gambling Hotel in a bout televised by ShoBox: The New Generation.

Tabiti (12-0, 11 KOs), of Las Vegas, is looking for victory over Tapia (15-0, 6 KOs), of of Puerto Rico, that would put him into the championship mix of a Euro-dominated division.

It’s no coincidence that the card (10 p.m. ET/PT) features another cruiserweight bout between 2012 U.S. Olympian Michael Hunter (11-0, 8 KOs) against Isiah Thomas (15-0, 6 KOs) of Detroit.

The undercard includes Tucson welterweight Alfonso Olvera (7-2, 3 KOs) against Sanjarbek Rakhmanov (4-0, 3 KOs) of Uzbekistan.

BRAWL NEARLY BREAKS OUT AT SHOBOX WEIGH-IN!

Keith Tapia
LAS VEGAS (May 12, 2016) – A fight nearly broke out between undefeated cruiserweights Andrew “The Beast”Tabiti and Keith “Machine Gun” Tapia at Thursday’s weigh-in for the ShoBox: The New Generation quadrupleheader tomorrow, May 13, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Sam’s Town Live.

As the boxers approached each other for the traditional face-off photo after weighing in, words were exchanged, Tapia antagonized Tabiti, prompting him to shove Tapia. It was chaos on the Ponderosa Room stage at Sam’s Town for a couple of minutes afterward until order was restored.

Talented Mayweather Promotions star Tabiti (12-0, 11 KOs), of Las Vegas, and power-puncher Tapia (17-0, 11 KOs), of Bronx N.Y, will take their frustrations out on each other in the ShoBox cruiserweight main event.

In the co-main event—also featuring undefeated cruiserweights— 2012 U.S. Olympian, Michael Hunter (11-0, 8 KOs), of Las Vegas, faces Isiah Thomas (15-0, 6 KOs), of Detroit.

Other televised fights: TMT’s Ronald “The Thrill” Gavril (15-1, 11 KOs), of Las Vegas, will clash with hard-punching Colombian Juan Camilo “La Boa” Novoa (25-6-1, 23 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout and his TMT stablemate, Sanjarbek “War” Rakhmanov (4-0, 3 KOs), of Las Vegas by way of Uzbekistan, will be opposed by Alfonso Olvera (7-2, 3 KOs), of Tucson, Ariz., in a six-round super lightweight match that will open the telecast. All but Gavril will be making their ShoBox debuts.

Tickets for the event promoted by Mayweather Promotions are priced at $25 and $50, not including applicable fees, and are on sale. Tickets can be purchased online at www.samstownlv.com/entertain, by calling (702) 284-7777, or at any Boyd Gaming box office.

The eight fighters made weight on their first attempts.

The Weights:
Tabiti: 193¾ pounds
Tapia: 194¾ pounds

Hunter: 193¾ pounds
Thomas: 200 pounds

Gavril: 166½ pounds
Novoa: 166½ pounds

Rakhmanov: 142¾ pounds
Olvera: 141½ pounds

What the fighters said before Thursday’s weigh-in:

ANDREW TABITI

“This is my first time on ShoBox and I’m very excited about it. It’s an amazing opportunity. I’m looking forward to showing how all the hard work I put in pays off.”

“I really want this bad. This is the chance for me to prove I can win and take the next step.”

“All I want to do is win. All I think about is winning. That’s why I work so very hard in the gym. This is a big fight, the moment of my career I’ve been waiting for. There’s no pressure. I believe in myself that I can win this and prove I am able to take the next step.”

“Tapia is a full-fledged cruiserweight, he’s undefeated and fought some experienced guys but I’ll probably be the best he’s fought so far. No, it should not be easy. I think he gets a little reckless, though, and that’s where I can take advantage. I’m smarter than him.I’ll probably be the best he’s fought he’s fought.”

“I know what’s at stakes here, that’s why I work so hard. People think I am mostly a counter-puncher but I can bang and be the aggressor, as long I as am smart about it. Patience is a key for me in this one.’’

KEITH TAPIA

“All four of us cruiserweights have a lot to prove on Friday. I know I’m looking forward to putting the cruiserweight division back on the map. I think I can make a difference, too.”

“I’m more of an exciting fighter, had a solid amateur career, I am able to adjust and can go both ways. I switch to lefty just to keep them guessing. I can box or slug. I’m blessed with the ability to do so many things in different categories. I don’t believe the other cruiserweights have as many categories to go by.”

“For sure, I’ll definitely be the aggressor and plan to take it to Tabiti. I want to make him fight. I love to fight and love people that come to fight. I’m explosive and will go for it. Tabiti is more relaxed. He has a big right hand we are very aware of, but we’ve worked on it. I know his tendencies, watched a lot of film.”

“We’re fighting a guy in his hometown. I know the fans won’t be rooting for me and I’m stepping into the lion’s den. But I love the challenge; everything against me, my back up against the wall. I always know I have to do a little extra. I do not believe in leaving it in the judges’ hands.”

“I’m blessed to get this opportunity, one I’ve waiting for a long time. It’s like a dream come true. I’m not gonna wait on him. I will force him to fight, but I have to be smart about it. I’m only 25, not even in my prime.”

“There’s a heat wave coming to Vegas’ maybe they’re talking about me because I’m going to be bad weather for Tabiti. He’s not going to know what hit him.’’

MICHAEL HUNTER

“This is like an unofficial mini tournament, but for me I just take it one fight at a time. I’m here, now, this is the moment and I am concentrating on only this. My career has gone all sorts of directions, but as long as it’s going up is all that matters.”

“This is a step up for me as far as competition compared to the past, with him being an undefeated cruiserweight. He’s a good, long-ranging southpaw who likes to take his time.”

“We are actually around the same age; we were in the amateurs at the same time, but never fought each other. Friday, I aim to win impressively. I don’t want to say I’m going for the knockout; if it happens it happens, but hopefully we can get it.”

“I like to press the action. If he comes to fight, then it will be a fight. Usually when I press it they can’t keep up with me. We’ll see. We’re here to fight and win, and only win. He likes to be on the ropes but I’m pretty sure I’m gonna find him on the ropes.”

“I’m blessed for getting such a great opportunity like this on ShoBox. It is my time where I can showcase my art and show who I am. This is a tough assignment. I can’t wait.”

ISIAH THOMAS

“This is wonderful, I’m fulfilling a dream to finally get on ShoBox. We’re all hungry, we all want to take the next step and the best thing is that it’s on television.”

“There are a lot of us in the division looking to make our mark. Not just myself. This is our chance to show that America has good fighters in the cruiserweight division. It’s the perfect showcase and opportunity for all of us up-and-coming American cruiserweight fighters. These are like eliminators fights. The winners move up to the next level.”
.
“No way I’m looking over Hunter. He’s a tough opponent. I don’t know a lot about him but he has a lot of confidence. I’ve fought tougher but I’m not sure that is an advantage at this point.”

“I’m looking to control the pace. I’ve been putting in the work, feel I’ve gotten more serious in my career and becoming more consistent in the ring.”

RONALD GAVRIL

“I’m excited to be fighting on ShoBox again. I thought I won my first ShoBox fight; I felt I did enough to win and it bothers me still to lose to a guy should beat. But I learned a lot. I know I have to stay busy and throw a lot of punches. The key for me in this fight is the jab.”

“He’s a good fighter, does a good job. I get a lot of daily competition at the Mayweather gym. I’m looking forward to having this big opportunity again. Many people don’t know who I am so fighting on SHOWTIME will start giving me the exposure and recognition I need.”

“I’m looking forward to what this will bring not only for my future but for all of ours.”

JUAN NOVOA

“This is a great opportunity for me and I’ll be giving it my all. My key is to stay on the inside and keep working the body. That is essential to me winning because he’s going to try and stay on the outside.”

“It’s going to be a great fight, the most important fight for me and my career. I have experience and fought more but I have to be smart in the ring against a bigger fighter. I’m ready for the challenge. I want to show the world what I have.”

“For me, it’s better fighting a Mayweather fighter.’’

SANJARBEK RAKHMANOV

“I’m on weight now and looking forward to fighting. Mike Tyson is my idol and I fight like him: all aggression. But I’m working on my defense and countering more. But staying short and aggressive is definitely what I’m all about.”

“My trainer Dewey Cooper has done a great job with me, adding technique to my natural aggressive style.”

“I turned pro late, at 25, but feel it’s an advantage. I’m more mature, so a lot of the potential vices of living in Vegas don’t apply to me.”

“I feel ready to fight someone in the top 10. But I know I’m a year away from that so I have to stay patient.”

“Olvera is a strong opponent with a lot of heart. I’m definitely expecting a strong hard fight. I’ve watched Olvera enough to feel I know him. He’s a taller, Mexican guy. I’m looking forward to fighting him. In this fight I want to win and look good and then come right back.’’

ALFONSO OLVERA

“I’ve been working so hard and will do my best to win. I’m fighting another smaller guy. Being taller that means I need to keep busy and not let him set up. I need to change my punches around and set a good pace with a constant jab in his face being the key.”

“My opponent likes to bang and keep on the inside. If he comes in, I’ll fight his way. I can bang on the inside, too. But the deal is to keep him on the end of all my long punches.”

“I’m really strong now. It’s been a process but I feel that I am getting there as a complete boxer. I’m fighting a Mayweather fighter in his backyard so I know I have to put in the work, the punches have to come around and I can’t let him fight his style.’’

“Training camp has been great; I want to thank to all and Mayweather Promotions for this opportunity.’’

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and former world champion Raúl Márquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Matthew Macklin announces retirement

Matthew Macklin
According to Dan Rafael, longtime middleweight contender, Matthew Macklin announced his retirement.

“Last month, at the O2 Arena in London, around the halfway point in my fight with Brian Rose, I knew it was time to retire,” Macklin said. “My face was marking up; I was getting frustrated at not being able to land my shots, and I knew that physically, after a long career, my body was telling me that enough was enough.

“I also knew that I didn’t want to go out like that, so with the help of my brother Seamus I decided to end my career on my terms and pulled the win out of the bag in the last few rounds. Deep down, I came to the realization on the night that it was probably going to be my last fight. I turn 34 (on Saturday) and, after much reflection, I have decided that following 24 years in the sport, over 80 amateur fights and 41 professional fights, it is time to hang up my gloves.”

“Fifteen years is a long time in professional boxing, and for me, it has been a real roller-coaster journey,” Macklin said. “I’ve had a great career but I know that now is the right time to bow out. I’m not the fighter I once was. Father Time catches up with us all eventually. I never wanted to do things the easy way or to be a big fish in a small pond. I wanted to know how good I was and test myself against the very best the sport had to offer, and I can proudly say I did that.

“I fought Sturm, Sergio Martinez and the best of them all, Gennady Golovkin. Most importantly, I fought them all in their primes. While I’m very grateful that boxing gave me such wonderful moments, it’s a sport that demands a lot of sacrifice. You miss out on a lot of things, so I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life now. I’m happy with how I finished the Rose fight and conducted myself throughout my career.

“I’m proud of what I achieved, from winning national titles and a senior ABA title as an 18-year-old in the amateurs to winning Irish and British titles and becoming a two-time European champion as a professional. Sadly, I never managed to get my hands on that elusive world title but I should have done that night in Cologne (Germany) in 2011. I believe I was very unlucky to be on the wrong side of a bad decision to Felix Sturm.”

“There have be so many great nights, but I think the Sturm fight in 2011 — leaving aside the judges’ decision — was probably the best,” he said. “I had announced myself on the world scene in a great fight against one of the longest-serving world champions in the sport, and although we didn’t get the decision, we celebrated anyway because we knew who won the fight, and so did they.

“Another highlight has to be fighting future Hall of Famer, and then one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Sergio Martinez at the famous Madison Square Garden in 2012. The fact that it was St. Patrick’s Day made it all the more special, and I must admit to smiling hugely when I saw the HBO billboard in Times Square.”

“Finally, I want to thank all the fans that watched me and supported me throughout the years, many of them traveling far and wide to do so,” he said. “Without you, there would have been no journey. Thank you.”

Jesus Cuellar & Abner Mares Los Angeles Media Roundtable Quotes

Jesus Cuellar
LOS ANGELES (May 12, 2016) – Featherweight world champion Jesus Cuellar and former three-division world champion Abner Mares went face-to-face for the first time Thursday as they hosted media roundtables in Los Angeles ahead of their showdown on Saturday, June 25 showdown live on CBS from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and is headlined by the highly anticipated welterweight clash between welterweight world champion Keith Thurman and former world champion Shawn Porter.

Tickets for the June 25 event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, start at $49 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, www.barclayscenter.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets are also available at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

With both men training in California, the two met for the first time at The Palms Restaurant about their fight and respective training camps before they head east to Brooklyn for the primetime battle.

Here is what the participants had to say Thursday:

JESUS CUELLAR

“I’ve been training very hard for this fight. You will see on June 25 that I have one of the best chins out there. I’m excited to finally have this fight.

“I have no bitterness towards Robert Garcia. I’ve seen him and I’m thankful for him making me a champion. This is business. This is work.

“We’ve been training in Big Bear for a little over two months now so I’m pushing myself very hard for this fight. I’m thankful for this great opportunity and I want to make the most of it.

“On June 25, I will once again give it my all and leave it all in the ring. At the end of the fight I will prove who the champion is and raise my hand in victory.

“I’m focused and well prepared. I’m ready for anything that happens. I know I’m going to win the fight. It doesn’t matter how, but I’m going to win.

“This is the same team we’ve had for four years, whether Robert Garcia is here or not. We’re ready to take on anyone.

“We’ve wanted this fight for two years and finally it is the time. We’re going to be in great shape and I know Mares will be in great shape too. We’re very happy that the fight was made. June 25 I’m going to prove that I am the number one featherweight champion.

“I’m just excited to go in the ring and give my best on June 25. I’m going to bring the victory home to Argentina.

“I’m thankful to be an Argentine champion and I’m happy to represent my country as the only world champion right now.”

ABNER MARES

“I’m really happy to be a part of this card against a really tough fighter in Jesus Cuellar. I know he’s mentioned that he wants to fight me and I’ve never been scared to do so. It’s all about timing. Now he’s going to know what it’s like to fight a top level fighter.

“I’ve been in boxing for many years. I’ve fought many tough fights. Against Leo Santa Cruz it wasn’t the outcome that we wanted, but we showed that we have the heart and the intelligence to fight top level guys.

“I’m happy that I’m fighting some with a legacy. Jesus Cuellar is a tough fighter, he hits hard and I respect him. I have nothing bad to say about him as a person. I know he’s going to be well conditioned, but I’m a level higher and I’m going to show it on June 25.

“This is a fight that I can gain so much and Robert Garcia too. He’s going to show, through me, that it was a big mistake for Cuellar to leave him.

“I feel great about the Santa Cruz fight, despite the loss on my record. It was a win, because I gained so much, a lot of respect and a lot of experience.

“I have a lot of reasons to be excited about this fight. One, I’m finally going to New York. I’ve never been there in my life. Two, I will become a world champion again. Three, I’m definitely fighting a top-level fighter. As I’ve mentioned many times before, I like these types of fights. It always brings out the best in me.

“Against Cuellar you’re going to see a different Abner, a new Abner. With Robert Garcia as my coach I have the slight advantage that he once trained Cuellar and took him to a world title. He’s a tough fighter, but he can’t say I’m not either.”

JUAN MANUEL LEDESMA, Cuellar’s Trainer

“We worked with Robert for four fights. We worked together and made Jesus a better fighter. Now there is the opportunity to continue working with Jesus, so I see no controversy or problems there.

“The long camp was what we needed. We needed to clear up some stuff and work on some things that were lacking. We got extra time in the altitude and being in Big Bear we are away from any distractions. Jesus is focused on what he needs to work on.

“Abner Mares is a great, skilled fighter. We have been working together to perfect the skills that we need to bring into the fight. When the day comes, we will be ready for the fight.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Mares’ Trainer

“When Mares first started working with me, we had no idea we were going to fight Jesus Cuellar. Now that we’re back in camp, I definitely have to take advantage of all the things I know about Cuellar. He has weaknesses that I know and I’m working on them with Abner.

“Abner is a fighter who over the last few years has given a lot of exciting brawls and great fights. Abner has tremendous skills though. When I met him years ago he had those skills but they weren’t being honed. People will think I taught him these skills, but I’m just bringing them back.

“Cuellar leaving me was the best thing that could have happened. If Cuellar hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have Mares. I got a great fighter and a great person. Things happen for a reason. We are going to do great things in boxing.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manage, SHOWTIME Sports

“Right now there is some criticism of boxing, that the best aren’t fighting the best. All you have to do is look at this card. These are the right fights. The right weight at the right time.

“June 25 we have two marquee matchups. All four fighters ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions taking on each other. Thurman and Porter, Cuellar and Mares, this is the best doubleheader of the entire year. I will put these two fights against any doubleheader that airs on television. That was our focus when we turned to CBS for this broadcast.

“The Thurman v. Porter and Cuellar v. Mares fights showcase fighters in the primes of their careers. What we have here are four fighters that are willing to take on the best, not make a spectacle of it. The go about their business with great care for the craft and they simply come to fight.

“Featherweight is one of the hottest divisions in the sport. You know Abner Mares, he has one of the best resumes in boxing. If you look at the list of fights that he has had, there aren’t a lot of big names on it and now the New York City fans will get to see what he has to offer.

“The champion, Jesus Cuellar has quietly put together his own very strong resume. What we have here is a fascinating matchup.”

KEVIN ROONEY, Director of Communications, DiBella Entertainment

“We’re truly honored and excited to promote this fight. Lou DiBella said at the New York presser for the main event that this is ‘the best this sport has to offer.’ These are not only tremendous world title matchups, but two of the biggest and most exciting matchups that can be made in their respective divisions taking place at Barclays Center, the premier sporting venue on the East Coast.

“A testament to how big an event this is, is how the tickets are moving. We are hoping and anticipating that some fans will make it over from the West Coast.

“Robert Garcia trained Jesus Cuellar for much of his career and the two won a world title together. Robert Garcia is here today but with his new charge, Abner Mares. The two have their first fight together and they believe that this will be the best Abner Mares we have ever seen.

“For Cuellar it will be his second fight with Juan Manuel Ledesma, but the two have worked together since Cuellar was a kid. It should be exciting to see how it plays out on fight night.

“We know that Sergio Martinez will be there on fight night to cheer on his fellow countryman in Jesus Cuellar and we look forward to seeing an exciting fight.”

Top Nicaraguan Prospect Roberto Arriaza (11-0, 10 KOs) Makes U.S. Debut Friday, May 20

ORANGE, Calif. (May 12, 2016) – Top Nicaraguan prospect Roberto Arriaza (11-0, 10 KOs) makes his U.S. debut one week from Friday against Cameron Kreal (8-9-2, 1 KO) of Las Vegas. It is perhaps the most intriguing fight on the undercard of Thompson Boxing Promotions “New Blood” Anniversary Event.

Arriaza, a welterweight boasting substantial punching power in either mitt, has been in the U.S. since April, training feverishly for the 8-round fight against Kreal. “I don’t plan on wasting any rounds. I have an aggressive boxing style. I’m confident that I’m going to put on an exciting performance.”

Marroquin Takes On Cruz This Saturday Night

Robert Marroquin
May, 2016- Roberto Marroquin, 25-3-1, (18KOs) is back in action this Saturday night in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, at the UAT – Universidad Autonoma De Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Marroquin, who resides in Dallas, Texas, joined the paid ranks in 2008, after an extensive amateur career, in which he won several silver medals, at the 2005 National Junior Olympics, 2006 International Aliyev Cup, the 2006 National PAL Championships, and a Gold medal at the 2006 National Junior Olympics, and once more at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Aside from winning a medal in the Olympic Trials, the other highlight of his amateur career is notching a win over current WBC Featherweight champion Gary Russell.

Leaving behind 165-15 mark in the unpaid ranks, Marroquin entered the pro-ranks right after the 2008 U.S Olympic Team Trial, going on to win 19 in a row, 14 by stoppage, before losing for the first time, a split decision, to Francisco Leal, (R.I.P) from which Marroquin learned a lot.

”No opponent is to be overlooked, Leal was a good fighter and it was a close fight.”

Against Leal, Marroquin took a loss on a decision, there was a clash of heads, bleeding badly, Marroquin could not see, he fought the best he could.

”Frankie was a tough guy, came to fight and won the fight.” Said Marroquin.
a

Leal went on to battle the likes of future world champion Evgeny Gradovich before fighting Raul Hirales, in a fight in which Leal met his untimely end.

Marroquin soldiered through, going on to get his title shot… against Rigondeaux.

The fight against the ultra-difficult Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux took place on September of 2012 for the WBA 122 Lb. Title, ending on the wrong side of the ledger, no shame in losing to the most complicated fighter today.

In the fight against Daniel Diaz in 2013, Diaz dropped Marroquin in the first round, ruptured two ligaments in his right ankle, going on to fight the rest of the bout injured and after ten rounds, almost pulled it off, close fight, losing via split decision.

A rematch was set up, but was called off as a snowstorm came in and the card was canceled.

After the fight, Marroquin became a free agent, cutting ties with promoter Top Rank, who had signed him early on, in his career.

With two fights in the last two years, both by stoppage, a renewed Marroquin, still very young (26 years old) and enjoys very good height for the weight class at 5’9, he feels he has time on his side and the experience to achieve his goal of a world title… or two.

Marroquin Battles Another Undefeated Fighter in This Outing.

For this outing, Marroquin who has fought the majority of his bouts in the super bantamweight and Feather Weight ranks, will be fighting in the Super Featherweight class in a ten round bout against an undefeated fighter in Carlos Diaz ”Chuko” Ramirez, 19-0, (10KOs) hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico.

Having grown up and his body filled in and fighting in the Super Featherweight ranks for this bout, Marroquin states that he can still do Featherweight, but as this fight is at a catch-weight, he is comfortable and will see is this new weight class suits him best.

”I can do the weight, (Featherweight) but I have grown up and my body has filled out, I feel very good and strong now, and based on the outcome of this fight, me and my team will talk about which weight class we will stay in” said Marroquin.

Long-time manager, Luis Perez since he turned pro, in one capacity or another, but as the main manager now, along with with Paul Reyes (trainer) and Sergio Diaz as the co-main manager.

A fixture in Texas boxing circles, Reyes had retired but came back for Marroquin.

In the last two outings for Marroquin, the Dallas, Texas fighter walked away with wins.
The first one came against Miguel Soto, a previously undefeated Puerto Rican, beating him in four.

Another undefeated fighter in Kien Evans lost that status against Marroquin, who took the WBC / U.S.A Feather title.

Getting a win against Ramirez this Saturday night is crucial, as a loss is a monkey-wrench at best, with a win, leading the way to another title shot in the near future.

The fight card will be presented by Zanfer promotions.

BeINsports en Espanol will televise in the U.S., while Azteca 7 will handle the broadcast in Mexico.

Abraham to return July 16 in Germany

Arthur Abraham
Recently disposed WBO Super Middleweight champion, Arthur Abraham will be back in the ring on July 16 in Germany.

“I’m not ready to say goodbye to the sport I love so much,” Abraham (44-5, 29 KOs), 36, of Germany, said. “‘The fight with Ramirez did not go as planned, but I promise this will not happen again. I will show that I can do better and that I can become world champion again. That is my greatest wish.”

“I was not happy with Arthur’s performance against Ramirez, but I have decided to give the boy another chance,” Wegner said. “He did not do enough in Las Vegas to retain his title and call himself a champion. Now he must work harder and show that this was just a blip in his character.”

“Arthur has overcome many obstacles in his career — fighting through a broken jaw to defend his middleweight title against Edison Miranda (in 2006) and suffering defeat in the Super Six on his way to becoming a two-weight world champion.

“He has come back from defeat before, and we’re sure he can do it again. It’s now about his legacy and how he wants to be remembered as a boxer. He must show that the fire still burns and that he’s willing to put in the work to become world champion again.”

SAM EVANS: “MY DAD BRED FIGHTING INTO ME”

SAM EVANS says he was made for fighting and he’ll prove it in Walsall this Saturday night (May 14).

The 20-year-old is quietly spoken outside of the ring, but inside it he lets his fists do the talking.

This weekend he gets the opportunity to stretch his perfect professional record to four victories when he faces Bulgaria’s Teodor Stefanov on Hatton Promotions and Black Country Boxing’s co-promotion at Banks’s Stadium.

“I’ve always been a fighter, it’s something that my dad bred into me when I was a kid so being a professional boxer is perfect job for me,” he said.

“People keep telling me I need to talk more and make more noise, but I think that as long I keep doing the business in the ring then that says enough.

“I could say I’m going to do this and that to my opponents, but there’s no need. They will know what I’m all about when the bell rings.”

Despite fighting being in his blood, Evans admits that he has added many more levels to his arsenal since linking up with British boxing legend Ricky Hatton last summer.

“I was pure aggression when I first turned pro. I just wanted to get close to my opponent and let my punches go,” he recalled.

“Ricky has taught me so much and although I’m still aggressive, I know when to take my foot of the gas and look for the openings now.

“It’s still early in my career, but I think I’m a completely different fighter to what I was a few months ago. If I can learn so much in such little time, it’s frightening to think what I’ll be capable of in a year or so.”

This Saturday’s show also features Evans’ stable mate Nathan Gorman alongside the return of former British lightweight champion Martin Gethin and unbeaten prospects Chad Sugden and Kieron McLaren. Rowley Regis’s popular Jason Welborn is also in action against William Warburton.

Tickets are £30 for standard unreserved seats and £60 for VIP tickets which includes table service and a two-course meal. Call the Walsall FC Ticket Office on 01922 651 414 to book.

King’s Promotions Thomas “KO” Snow ready for statement win over Del Valle Friday night in Washington, DC

Washington, DC (May 12, 2016)– This Friday night in Washington, DC, Thomas Snow will meet Luis Orlando Del Valle (21-2, 16 KO’s) in the co-feature bout of nationally televised show live on BET.

The show is promoted by Roc Nation Sports.

Snow of Washington, DC has a record of 18-2 with 12 knockouts and this is a big opportunity fighting on a big platform.

“Training camp went great. It was a perfect camp and now it is time to do something, and I am going out there to get the win.”

Asked what he knew about Del Valle, Snow did know much other than some basic information.

“Del Valle is a conventional fighter from Puerto Rico. He has a similar record, but hasn’t fought many good guys. I saw his fight with (former world champion) Vic Darchinyan. (A fight that Del Valle lost via unanimous decision in 2012).

This is a fight that most boxing experts believe is a crossroads fight, with the winner leaping into contention, but Snow does not feel the pressure of the fight.

“I think he has more to lose then me. I am moving up two weight classes. I would prefer to be fighting at 115 pounds, but the opportunities have been coming at higher weights. With that being said, I don’t think he is on my level. So I am confident in this fight and the win will be an awesome breakthrough.”

Despite fighting in his hometown, Snow does not think that plays any part in who will win the fight.

“There is no advantage to that. In boxing, it just takes one punch and that crowd I not help that.”

“I know what I did in training camp and I am prepared. I am not fearful of any man. God blessed me with skills and I am going to do the work. I just know by keeping God in your life, everything will go great for you.”

Said Snow’s promoter, Marshall Kauffman of King’s Promotions, “This is a great opportunity for Thomas. He has shown throughout his career that he has talent. His only losses have been to undefeated guys, but he has had a tremendous camp, and on Friday night he will show that he should be one of the top contenders in the super bantamweight division”

“This fight card in particular has a very special place in my heart, as it should for others from Washington, because it’s about as local as it can be. We’ve got a hometown hero, who, if you have not seen him fight, see him now before you can’t afford to see him. Dusty Hernandez-Harrison is going to be a big star and he represents Washington, D.C. in a way that few do. Check him out now before you’re paying big money in Vegas to see him fight.

“The fight is also being broadcasted by another home-grown institution, and that is BET. It’s great to see sports back on BET, and boxing in particular, coming from the DC Armory as the host venue. Tickets are still available. We look forward to hosting everyone who wants to come out and cheer on all these fighters, but Dusty in particular so we can have another championship fighter in D.C.”

“Roc Nation Sports and Events DC are helping to ensure that the legacy of the District’s boxing history continues. On behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser, Adam Weers, who is the chairman of the District’s Boxing and Wrestling Commission, Miss Kimberly Lockett, who is another commissioner and myself, welcome to Washington, D.C.”

WOMEN OF BOXING DESCEND ON THE BIG APPLE FOR RAGING BABE BRUNCH: NEW YORK, NEW YORK

NEW YORK – May 11, 2016 – The Raging Babe Brunch continues to forge connections between women of diverse backgrounds, companies and areas of expertise, all sharing in common their connections to the Sweet Science. On June 11th, the heels of Raging Babes from across the East Coast and beyond, hit the pavement in the “Concrete Jungle,” New York, New York for the first New York event in three years.

An intimate, exclusive affair, this spring’s Raging Babe Brunch, dubbed New York, New York will once again bring together boxing’s most influential women to network, and honor the sport’s trailblazers: those women who have broken the glass ceiling and transcended traditional gender roles in business, and in particular, in boxing.

The brunch shares June 11th with a Puerto Rican double-header at New York City boxing mecca, Madison Square Garden, along with the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. “I’m excited for the opportunity to celebrate both my heritage, and our seventh Raging Babe event,” said Raging Babe founder and namesake, Michelle Rosado, who is of Puerto Rican descent.

“These brunches are more than just women chatting and having breakfast during fight week,” said Rosado. “These are friendships, businesses connections and lifelong relationships beginning in a room full of encouraging and powerful women, drawing on and sharing their experiences, challenges and triumphs as women in the boxing industry.”

“I have had so many requests from East Coast Raging Babes to bring the brunch East, and I’m thrilled to finally be able to return to New York,” continued Rosado. “New York City embodies the Raging Babe spirit of opportunity and hard work, and I can’t wait to be inspired once again by the women of boxing on June 11th.”

Danny Roman Out to Defend NABA Title on Thompson Boxing’s Anniversary Show

ORANGE, Calif. (May 11, 2016) – Thompson Boxing Promotions celebrates sixteen years in the business with a tremendous fight card featuring NABA Champion Danny Roman (18-2-1, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles defending against hardened veteran Christian Esquivel (28-9, 21 KOs) of Mexico.

The 10-round, “New Blood” main event takes place Friday, May 20, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Since winning the 122-pound title last July, Roman has defended the championship twice, the most recent win coming in knockout fashion against Ramiro Robles in February. The 25-year-old Roman is coming in red hot with a ten-fight winning streak and holding the number fourteen position in the WBA’s super bantamweight division.

He faces a more experienced boxer in Esquivel, who holds a loss against longtime world champion Shinsuke Yamanaka.

He injured his shoulder, but the surgery fixed everything and we plan to give him three fights in 2016. We aim at Sergey Kovalev by the end of the year or the beginning of 2017.”

The 31-year-old Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KOs), the adopted son of Montreal, is on a seek-and-destroy mission for his first fight in one year. The two-time Russian Olympian (pictured to the left) hasn’t fought since last June, when he stopped Alexander Johnson in the 7th round, due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Beterbiev is world ranked among the top six in all four major sanctioning organizations: IBF #2, WBO & WBA #4, and WBC #6. The power-punching Betervbiev will be defending his WBO International and NABA titles against Maderna.

During his 3-year professional career, Beterbiev has defeated two former world champions, Gabriel Campillo and Tavoris Cloud.

Maderna (23-2, 15 KOs) is a veteran fighter from Argentina, the same country that has produced numerous championship boxers, from Luis Firpo to Sergio Martinez, as well as well standout contemporaries such as IBF cruiserweight champion Victor Ramirez, along with contenders Lucas Matthysse, Jesus Cuellar, Omar Narvaez and Juan Carlos Reveco. In his most recent action last May, Maderna stopped Rolando Wenceslao Mansilla in the opening round for the Argentina super middleweight championship.

Also airing on ESPN in the co-feature, undefeated American prospects Bryant “Goodfella” Perrella (13-0, 12 KOs), fighting out of Fort Myers, Florida, and David “Day Day” Grayton (14-0, 10 KOs), of Washington D.C., square off in a 10-round middleweight bout.

Unbeaten super welterweight Jamontay “Quiet Assassin” Clark (9-0-0, 6 KOs), from Cincinnati, Ohio, meets an opponent to be determined in a 6-round “TV swing” match.
Montreal’s undefeated heavyweight Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas (18-0, 13 KOs), also a 2008 Colombian Olympian, returns in an 8-round bout versus TBA.

Also fighting on the undercard is popular French-Canadian welterweight Sebastian Bouchard (12-1, 4 KOs) who meets an opponent to be determined in an 8-rounder; Montreal super bantamweight Vislan Dalkaev (6-0, 2 KOs) vs. Mexican invader Javier “El Chivero” Franco (25-17-4), Montreal super middleweight Dario Bredicean (8-0, 2 KOs) against TBA and Toronto’s Parnell Fischer (0-1, 0 KOs) vs. Mexican opponent Larami “Sir” Carmona (1-2, 0 KOs) in a 4-round fight.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

De Carolis to defend Super Middle crown against Zeuge

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Super Middleweight champion Giovanni De Carolis will defend his title against Tyron Zeuge on July 16 in Berlin, Germany.

“Tyron Zeuge is leading the way for a new generation of world-class German boxers, and by beating De Carolis, he can take his place among the best in the world,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Zeuge said. “Whether I’m ready for it, other people will have to judge. But one thing is for certain: On July 16 I will give everything to fulfill my dream of becoming world champion.”
