“BEKMAN” STAYS PERFECT, WINS FIRST TITLE!!

Los Angeles, CA (February 22, 2016) Hot, undefeated junior lightweight prospect “Bekman” Soylybayev of Almaty, Kazakhstan, improved to 8-0 (3KOs) on Thursday night with a shutout unanimous decision over battle-tested Mexican veteran Moises Delgadillo,15-14-2, in Costa Mesa, California. Scores were 80-72 on all three judges’ scorecards.

With the victory, the 25-year-old “Bekman” earned the vacant WBA-NABA USA Super Featherweight Title.

Using his superior skills, solid combinations and a distinct speed advantage, “Bekman” controlled the action throughout the fight.

“I’m very happy with my performance, he was a tough fighter but I stuck to the game plan that my trainer Eric Brown devised,” said “Bekman”. “This was a very good win for me, he was my toughest opponent and I’m thrilled to win my first title.”

With four fights in 2015 and training in Los Angeles at the Wild Card West Boxing Gym in Santa Monica, “Bekman” will look to stay busy this year.

Said manager Sam Katkovski, “Bekman can box and brawl. He used a combination of both for this victory. His fan friendly style has connected with his growing fan base as we saw on Thursday night.”

“This was Bekman’s toughest test to date and he passed it with flying colors. He is going to be back in May in Kazakhstan on a card promoted by Diamond Ring and then will return to the United States to fight again in the second half of 2016.”

‘BELLATOR 150: GALVAO VS. DANTAS 2’ THIS FRIDAY – UPDATED FIGHT CARD INFORMATION

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (February 22, 2015) – This Friday, Bellator MMA brings a world championship matchup between two highly skilled mixed martial arts practitioners when bantamweight champion Marcos “Loro” Galvao (17-6-1) defends his strap against former champion and former friend and training partner, Eduardo “Dudu” Dantas (17-4) at “Bellator 150: Galvao vs. Dantas 2.

The event emanates from the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas this Friday, February 26, and airs live on Spike at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while preliminary bouts will stream live on Bellator.com and The Bellator Mobile App. Tickets for “Bellator 150: Galvao vs. Dantas 2,” which start at just $27, are on sale now at KansasStarEventCenter.com or Ticketmaster.com, as well as the Kansas Star Arena box office.

In addition to the title fight, a heavyweight co-main event of Cheick Kongo (23-10-2) against Vinicius Queiroz (8-3) will anchor the number two spot. Also on the card, Kendall Grove (22-15) takes on Francisco “Kiko” France (13-3-1), hometown favorite David Rickels (16-4, 1 NC) will return to action against Bobby Cooper (12-5), plus the Bellator MMA debut of newly signed women’s flyweight Lena Ovchynnikova (10-3), who takes on Rebecca Ruth (5-1).

“Loro,” who has fought for world-renowned promotions the likes of World Extreme Cagefighting and Shooto since 2003, will be competing for the 11th time under the Bellator MMA banner. The 34-year-old is presently in the midst of a four-fight winning streak and has emerged victorious in seven of his last eight scraps. In his last outing, Galvao finished Joe Warren at “Bellator 135: Warren vs. Galvao” via submission to win his first-ever championship and fulfil a promise he made to his mother before her unfortunate passing.

Meanwhile, Dantas will be looking to duplicate the success he had against Galvao in their first meeting, which resulted in a second-round knockout at “Bellator 89.” Last May, the 27-year-old Nova Uniao product dispelled of Mike Richman via unanimous decision at “Bellator 137: Halsey vs. Grove.” The Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament winner is looking to become a two-time bantamweight champion come October 23.

Kongo will be making his eighth appearance under the Bellator MMA banner, looking to add to his impressive promotional mark of 5-2. The Parisian native has fought a who’s who in the mixed martial arts landscape, with notable wins against Mirko Cro Cop, Pat Barry, Matt Mitrione, and Alexander Volkov already on his record. In his last outing – which just so happened to be inside the Kansas Star Arena — Kongo impressively defeated Volkov via unanimous decision.

After nearly two years out of action, Queiroz returned to the Bellator MMA cage against Ewerton Teixeira at “Bellator 139: Kongo vs. Volkov,” defeating his fellow Brazilian opponent via second round arm-triangle choke. “Spartan” hopes to plant the seeds for a busy 2016 with the matchup against Kongo, where a win can undoubtedly place him in the midst of the heavyweight title picture.

Grove capped off 2015 with an emphatic knockout of Joey Beltran at “Bellator 143: Warren vs. Davis,” in September. The winner of “The Ultimate Fighter: 3,” has fought professionally since 2003 for promotions all around the world, notably ProElite and UFC. This will be “Da Spyder’s” sixth appearance under the Bellator MMA banner as he hopes to climb back towards a 185-pound title shot – he competed for the gold last year against Brandon Halsey.

A veteran of Strikeforce, “Kiko” France has strung together a five-fight winning streak as of late, most recently handing the formerly undefeated Ben Reiter the first loss of his young career at “Bellator 146: Kato vs. Manhoef.” It’s safe to classify the 33-year-old Arizona native as a “submission specialist,” with 12 of his 13 wins as a professional coming by way of making his opponent tap.

A Bellator MMA event in Mulvane, Kansas just wouldn’t be the same without “The Caveman,” who will return to action for the first time since competing against Michael Chandler this past November. Rickels always comes ready to put on a show, whether it’s on his way to the cage, or when he’s taking on a who’s who of Bellator MMA lightweight talent. The 27-year-old will be making his 16th appearance under the promotional banner.

The last time Bobby Cooper fought inside the Kansas Star Arena, he took home a closely contested split decision victory over “Bellator 147” co-headliner Pablo Villaseca. Now, “Super Duper” will look to move to 3-0 under the Bellator MMA banner when he faces Rickels in hostile territory. It’s worth noting that the Missouri native has only lost twice in his last eight MMA appearances.

Hailing from Ukraine, Ovchynnikova will enter the fray fresh off a new exclusive, multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. “Hunter” has previously fought the likes of Joanne Calderwood and at only 28-years-old has already competed professionally since 2006. Now, Ovchynnikova looks to solidify herself as a top contender in the budding women’s flyweight division on February 26 against a tough foe in Ruth.

“Becky” Ruth was undefeated in 2015, winning all three of her matchups by technical knockout under the Shamrock Fighting Championships banner. The lone loss on the Missouri native’s record came against Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger, via controversial split decision.

ANGEL LUNA FINISHING CAMP FOR CHRISTOPHER DIAZ BOUT ON CRAWFORD VS. LUNDY UNDERCARD

Brooklyn, N.Y. (Monday, Feb. 22, 2016) – Uprising Promotions featherweight Angel Luna (11-1-1, 6 KOs) looks to knock off another undefeated prospect this Saturday night, facing Puerto Rico native Christopher Diaz (14-0, 9 KOs) at the Theater in Madison Square Garden. The bout will be featured on the undercard to a WBO Super Lightweight Championship bout between Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) and Hank Lundy (26-5-1, 13 KOs).

“Luna has been working hard for this fight, and I am fully confident that he is going to perform well,” said Ronson Frank, President of Uprising Promotions. “I watched him spar another undefeated fighter for 10 rounds recently, and he is in great shape. As far as conditioning and his mental approach are concerned, he is 100% ready. We have been working on strategy together as a team, and I believe that we have the right strategy to beat this guy. I just can’t wait for the fight.”

Luna returns to the ring on Saturday night for his first appearance in 2016. Trained by Mateo De La Cruz and Frank, Luna fought his first nine professional bouts in his native country of the Dominican Republic before signing to Uprising Promotions. The Brooklyn transplant joined the promotion in 2014 and will fight under its banner for the sixth time when he faces Diaz.

In his last outing, Luna handed Jose Lopez (15-1-1, 11 KOs) his first professional loss at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on the undercard to Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale. In that contest, he dropped Lopez twice to secure an eventual unanimous decision. Luna was slated for a return to the ring last October as part of a televised quadrupleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation, meeting another undefeated prospect in Filipino lightweight Harmonito Dela Torre (16-0, 11 KOs). However, Typhoon Koppu ravaged Dela Torre’s home country of the Philippines the week of the fight and forced a cancellation of that bout due to travel restrictions.

Diaz enters this contest with nine knockouts over 14 victories, with the majority of his fights taking place in his native Puerto Rico. The Barranquitas resident had a busy 2015, recording six wins and most recently competing this past December when he scored a knockout of Jerry Guevara in San Juan.

ROBINSON CASTELLANOS TO FACE OSCAR ESCANDON FOR THE WBC INTERIM FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE ON MARCH 5 AT THE DC ARMORY

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 22, 2016) – After a thrilling victory over perennial contender Rocky Juarez to win the WBC Silver Featherweight title and a mandatory shot at the world title, Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos (23-11, 13 KOs) of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico is finally getting the opportunity to become a world champion when he faces former WBA Interim Super Bantamweight World Champion Oscar Escandon (24-2, 16 KOs) of Ibague, Colombia in a 12-round fight for the WBC Interim Featherweight World Championship on March 5 at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C.

Featured as part of the non-televised portion of the Luis Ortiz vs. Tony Thompson undercard, the fight between the top featherweight contenders will be part of the international broadcast and streamed live on Ring TV. “This is the biggest fight of my career,” said Robinson Castellanos. “I know that Oscar Escandon is going to be a tough opponent. He is a former Olympian with recent victories over other difficult fighters like Jesus Cuellar. But, I feel very strong, focused and have been working very hard to make sure I obtain the victory. The state of Guanajuato has not had a world champion in more than 35 years and to be able to fight for a world title as a representative of my home is a big motivator for me. I want to thank my team, Golden Boy Promotions and all my supporters for this opportunity. I promise I will have my hands raised up in victory on March 5.”

“First I want to thank God, my team, my promoter Sampson Boxing for this opportunity,” said Oscar Escandon. “I also want to thank my family for all their support and I want to dedicate this fight to my newborn daughter. I feel very happy and thankful to be fighting for the world title. I know Robinson he is strong, hard puncher, but I am going to be 100 percent prepared for this fight. I have been training very hard and want to make sure I take the title back to my home. May the best man win.”

Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos is a fighter whose talent exceeds his record and has had one of the greatest comebacks in 2015. Coming off a loss to Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in February 2014, Castellanos followed it up with a dominant victory over Ronny Rios in October 2014, stopping the then-unbeaten prospect in the fifth round. Castellanos continued to show his power in January of 2015 facing the warrior Rocky Juarez for the chance to win the WBC Silver Featherweight title and become the mandatory challenger for the WBC Featherweight World Championship. Both fighters showed a lot of heart and put on one of the bloodiest fights of 2015, but it was Castellanos’ dominance that was on display as his powerful jabs, brutal uppercuts and well-timed counter-punching knocked down Juarez in the fifth and twice in the 10th round to win via unanimous decision with scores of 118-106, 118-106 and 118-107. Now, Castellanos has a shot to become a world title holder when he faces Oscar Escandon on March 5.

Hailing from Ibague, Colombia, Oscar Escandon is a former world champion with a decorated amateur career. Escandon competed in the 2004 Olympics representing Colombia and was initiated into the professional ranks in 2008 with a victory over then unbeaten Luis Meza. From there, Escandon enjoyed an undefeated streak and defeat current WBA Featherweight World Champion Jesus “El Jinete” Cuellar, Michael “Michell” Arango, and Javier Coronado along his path to capture the WBC Interim Latino Featherweight title in 2013. That same year Escandon faced Nehomar Cermeno for the WBA Interim Super Bantamweight World Championship and came up short losing via split decision. Escandon quickly bounced back with a victory over Julian “Chispita” Evaristo Aristule in August of 2014 which secured him another shot at the WBA Interim Super Bantamweight World Championship against Tyson “Prince of Hali” Cave in December of 2014, which he defeated via split decision. Escandon was last seen in the ring against Moises Flores in April of 2015 losing his title via split decision. Now, Escandon is ready to get back in the ring looking for another big victory and a world title when he faces Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos.

‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell blasts “disrespectful” Eubank Jr. following sparring video nasty

LONDON (22 FEBRUARY) British middleweight champion Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell has blasted Chris Eubank Jr. for posting on social media footage of himself knocking out a young sparring partner last week.

The short video sparked heated debate and some condemnation when uploaded to Eubank Jr.’s social media accounts and Blackwell – who faces Eubank Jr. on March 26 at The SSE Arena – has branded his upcoming opponent a ‘bad role model’.

“He put a video up on social media, for the whole world to see, of him knocking out a kid who hasn’t even had a pro fight and it’s disgusting,” said Blackwell. “The amateur kid is building his confidence and trying to learn from a so-called professional, but somehow Eubank Jr. takes pride in exploiting him like that.

“I’ve put more than one world champion down in the gym over the years but I don’t go around bragging about it. And the idea of filming it and putting up a clip on social media is just embarrassing.

“I think Eubank Jr. is so disrespectful. He should be ashamed of himself.

“But this is the sort of thing the Eubanks do. They like to be controversial, they like to get people talking, and they don’t care what anyone thinks of them. They’ve also got nobody around them brave enough to pull them up on any of it.”

Blackwell would like to think Eubank Jr.’s sole reason for posting the video was to try and intimidate him ahead of their hotly-anticipated March 26 showdown.

“I don’t follow what Eubank Jr. does,” Blackwell said. “I don’t follow him on Snapchat, I don’t follow him on Twitter, I don’t follow him on Facebook and I don’t follow him on Instagram. I’m not focusing on what he’s doing. He could post a clip of himself knocking out (Gennady) Golovkin and it wouldn’t bother me. I still know I’ll beat him up on March 26.

“People have said to me Eubank Jr. doesn’t look like he’s training very hard for this fight, and that he’s just sparring novices, but I know he wouldn’t be so stupid to do that. He knows this is the hardest fight of his life.”

For Blackwell, it has become the most personal fight of his life – the one he wants to win more than any other, the one that means more than any other.

“I had a lot of respect for John Ryder, Damon Jones and Jack Arnfield, my last three opponents, and that’s why there was no animosity between us in the build-up,” he said. “But I’ve got no time for Eubank Jr.

“I don’t think he’s good for boxing in any way, shape or form. He’s arrogant, he’s a bad role model and he gives the general public a perception that all boxers are money-hungry bullies.

“I actually thought he was all right when we sparred, but his ego has gone way out of control and he’s in danger of losing a grip on reality. He’s a nasty piece of work and people are realising that now. He needs to be brought back down to earth.”

*** Tickets for the British middleweight title blockbuster between Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr. are on sale now!

Tickets are priced at £35, £50, £75, £175, £200 and £250 for ringside and can be purchased online at ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by phoning the SSE Arena, Wembley Box Office on 0844 815 0815 ***

EDWARDS: I HAVE TO PUT WILTON AWAY IN STYLE

Charlie Edwards says he must prove he’s ready to fight for major titles this year by kicking-off with a KO win over Belfast’s Luke Wilton at the sold-out Manchester Arena on Saturday night (February 27) live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Edwards clashes with Wilton on the undercard of the huge World Super-Bantamweight unification battle between Carl Frampton MBE and Scott Quigg, and he knows Wilton is going to have a large backing on the night.

The 23 year old landed the English title in his fifth fight and made a successful first defence here in November, and Edwards says tonight represents a huge platform for him to land more big fights this year, with the likes of former European and Commonwealth champion Kevin Satchell on his radar.

“I feel Luke is made for me,” said Edwards. “Luke is an experienced fighter who has been in Kevin Satchell and more recently Lee Haskins. Luke comes forward, he is a plodder – I know I’ll beat him comfortably. With his experience, he will think he can ‘rough me up’ but I will outbox and trade with him if needs be.

“No disrespect to Luke – but quite simply I need to be blowing people like this away if I want to get to the top. Haskins got him out of there in two rounds so I’m determined to make a similar statement.

“The quality of sparring I’ve had for this fight has been the best I’ve ever had. I’ve been sparring Angel Moreno who is fighting for a European title shortly, and trust me I’ve been holding my own. It’s been great experience for me as I’ve learnt so much but also I know I’m not too far away from that level.

“Satchell is someone I have my sights set on in the not too distant future, he would be a good scalp for me. I want all the big names and all the tough fights as I’m confident I can beat them all. The progression I’ve shown already with Danny Vaughan has shown me that we can go right to the top together.”

Edwards’ clash with Wilton is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as Frampton and Quigg put their IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight titles on the line in a blockbuster bout.

Gavin McDonnell faces Jorge Sanchez for the WBC Silver Super-Bantamweight title and an official eliminator for the WBC World title, Manchester’s Hosea Burton faces Miles Shinkwin for the vacant British Light-Heavyweight title and Belfast’s Ryan Burnett takes on Frenchman Anthony Settoul for the vacant WBC International Bantamweight title.

Belfast’s Marco McCullough faces Morecambe’s Isaac Lowe for the vacant Commonwealth Featherweight title, while there’s action for Commonwealth gold medallists Josh Taylor and Scott Fitzgerald, Conrad Cummings and Marcus Morrison.

MATHEWS AIMS FOR 50 AND NOT OUT

Merseyside hero Derry Mathews is looking to mark his 50th professional fight with a world title win against WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan.

The big-hitting Scouser has fought some tough opposition down years including Anthony Crolla and Stephen Ormond and is gearing up for another big test at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday 12th March, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

The 32-year-old has been one of the busiest fighters in Merseyside in recent years and boasts an impressive 20 stoppages from 38 career wins. Since making his professional debut back in 2003 Mathews has won World, British Commonwealth and World title honours and wants to mark his big night with another belt.

“When I first turned professional at the age of 18 I had no idea I’d enjoy such a long and fulfilling career. If somebody had told me I’d be fighting for a world title in my 50th fight I wouldn’t have believed them. Not many people get to 50 fights and I’m lucky that I’m still around and I’m still the same person inside and outside the ring,” said Mathews.

He added: “I’m a dedicated fighter and I love the sport but a lot of it is down to all of my coaches and the people that have supported me; they’ve looked after me. I’ve been involved in some tough fights but I’m still here and I’m feeling fitter than ever. I was put in some hard fights as kid when I was 18 and 19 but they helped toughen me up.”

With just three weeks to go to the massive showdown Mathews is putting in the hours with trainer Danny Vaughan and says he’s never felt in better shape.

He said: “I’m feeling young, fresh and probably in the peak of my career. I can still do things I could do when I was 18 and I can do them better now as well. I’m a top athlete, the day I stop being a top athlete is the day I’ll walk away from boxing but at the moment I’m feeling stronger than ever and I’m ready to become a world champion.”

‘Dirty’ Derry has vowed to beat his bitter Mancunian rival in what he says will be his last shot at a world title and is confident that he could carry on boxing for many years to come. The likeable Scouser has been involved in some gruelling contests and say he’s earned his title shot the hard way.

He said: “After March 12th there’s nothing stopping me from going on and making ten title defences to get to 60 fights. For now I’m fully focused on making the big 50 a special night. What better way to win a world title than in my own city against a Manc? It doesn’t get better than that,”

“Some boxers get a shot at a world title after 20 or so fights and most of them lose. People use them as a defence but I’ve done it the hard way; I’m coming to win. I’ve had some great nights in Liverpool and some bad nights but this one is going to be special.”

Flanagan v Mathews headlines an action packed card that also features one of the worlds greatest boxers, Guillermo Rigondeaux, taking on Merseyside hero Jazza Dickens; another star of world boxing, dynamite punching South African Zolani Tete challenges for the Vacant IBF International Bantamweight Championship against Jose Santos Gonzalez; Birmingham ace Tommy Langford defends his WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title against Lewis Taylor; hard-hitting Ellesmere Port’s star Paul Butler will challenge for a championship belt; Blackpool’s Matty Askin defends his English Cruiserweight title against Swindon’s Lawrence Bennett, plus Indian superstar Vijender Singh makes his Liverpool debut. The undercard features some of the best talent in Merseyside: undefeated leading world title contender Kevin Satchell; red-hot prospect Steven Lewis; European Champion Ryan Farrag; Manchester prospects Macaulay McGowan and Zelfa Barrett and Leicester ace Lyon Woodstock complete the card.

HURRICANE WRIGHT WANTS TO TOPPLE TOP CRUISERWEIGHTS

Junior Wright
Chicago, IL (February 22, 2016) – BoxRec.com says Junior Wright is the number-two ranked cruiserweight in the United States, and the Chicagoan is keen to show he should have the top slot.

On Friday, the 15-1-1 Wright got a 1st round stoppage over Jim Franklin on a show in Iowa, and the boxer feels he’s building superb momentum, which will soon result in another title shot.

“The fight was over so fast I couldn’t really tell you much about it,” said Wright, laughing. “But I threw a really good body shot to put him down and then afterwards I just threw a lot of combinations when he got up and they stopped it. I feel great about my win. While training for my world title fight with Rakhim Chakhiev in 2015, I had an injury but still went ahead with the fight. After the match I had surgery and now I am 100 hundred percent. I feel ready for all the top cruiserweights in the world, from what I see there is not much out there to worry about in the division. I would love the opportunity to fight Beibut Shumenov for a world title. He is one of the dominant champions and his fights happen in the U.S. so I feel there is no home-turf advantage, no jet leg to worry about. I feel very confident in this fight and my abilities!”

Wright is now No. 13 in the WBA and wants to fight best in the division, including WBA world champion Shumenov, or BoxRec No. 1 in the USA, BJ Flores.

His promoter Dmitry Salita backs the fighter nicknamed “Hurricane” all the way.

“I’ve always felt that Junior Wright is one of the best cruiserweights in the world and most definitely in the U.S.,” Salita said. “I believe he has the tools to compete with and beat the best fighters in the cruiserweight division.”

LOWE: NORTH WEST FANS WILL ROAR ME TO VICTORY AGAINST BELFAST’S MCCULLOUGH

Isaac Lowe wants fan power to roar him to victory as he challenges Marco McCullough for the vacant Commonwealth Featherweight title at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night (February 27) liv on Sky Sports Box Office.

Lowe and McCullough clash on a bumper bill in the famous boxing arena, where Belfast’s IBF Super-Bantamweight king Carl Frampton MBE meets WBA champion Scott Quigg in their unification blockbuster.

Frampton brings a legion of fans over from Belfast who will be backing McCullough to land his first major title, but Lowe has warned him that the local fans are just as passionate and they will push him on to add the Commonwealth strap to his English title.

“They keep saying about all the Irish fans that will be here tonight but there will be a lot of English in too,” said Lowe. “I’m a North West boxer and I hope the North West fans will get behind me. I might get a few boos when I get in to the ring from the Belfast fans but I’ve been brought up getting called bad names and getting booed so it’s just going to inspire me even more to go in there and prove them all wrong. When the fight has finished they will be clapping for me at the end of the night, so I’m looking forward to it and looking forward to proving so many people wrong.”

Lowe landed the English belt in September in Leeds with a ninth round stoppage win over Jamie Speight and held onto it in this arena in November via a split draw against Ryan Doyle.

Lowe turned 22 in January and can now hold two major belts with the prospect of more to come for the winner in 2016 – and the Morecambe youngster still cannot believe how far he’s come in the last year.

“To win the Commonwealth title would be a dream come true,” said Lowe. “I never thought that at the age of 22 I would be fighting for the Commonwealth title on such a big bill on Sky Sports Box Office. To win this I would have conquered so much in my career so early. I am probably 15 months ahead of myself but you have to take the chances when they come.

“After winning this there will be so many big fights ahead of me and so many good boxers wanting to fight me. I can develop into the weight division and I’ll be even better in a couple of years’ time when I start peaking at my weight. At 24 or 25 years old I could be contesting World titles, which is what my aim is. But first I have to get through tonight and develop into my weight division properly.

“It has been a rollercoaster journey last 12 months for me. From fighting in front of 600 people on a small hall show I got my English title shot on the big show in Leeds. It’s thanks to Steve Wood and Eddie Hearn for getting me on these massive shows.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams that at the age of 22 I would be fighting on such big shows as Anthony Crolla’s World title and Josh Warrington’s European title fight. Now I am on one of the biggest shows we have seen in Britain with Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg fighting and I am looking forward to it so much.”

Lowe’s battle with McCullough is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as Frampton and Quigg put their IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight titles on the line in a blockbuster bout.

Unbeaten Flyweight Charlie Edwards meets Belfast’s Luke Wilton, while there’s action for Commonwealth gold medallists Josh Taylor and Scott Fitzgerald, Conrad Cummings and Marcus Morrison.

JUPP MAKES FIRST TITLE DEFENCE IN HARROW

Belvedere super-featherweight king George Jupp wants to bag himself a British title.

The jab and move specialist, who is unbeaten in over four years, makes the first defence of his WBO Inter-Continental title on Saturday 2nd April at Harrow Leisure Centre, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Last time out the 25-year-old upset the odds to inflict a first defeat on Boxing Writer’s Young Boxer of the Year and former sparring partner Mitchell Smith. The self-confessed ‘trainerholic’ wasted no time in getting back in the gym and is gearing up for a busy 2016.

He said: “This year is all about staying unbeaten and racking up the wins. I’m guessing with this Inter-Continental title if I carry on winning it’ll push me right up the rankings. Hopefully if I stay unbeaten and get some good fights with big names I’ll get a shot at the British title eventually; that’s my goal at the minute and all I’m concentrating on,”

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself, I’m going to take things one fight at a time and see where it takes me. Winning the British title outright is my dream and anything on top of that would be a bonus. Until you’ve reached that level you don’t know if you’re capable of going on to bigger things.”

The one time scaffolder is chomping at the chance to showcase his skills to BoxNation viewers again after overcoming the swaggering starlet Smith with a points win and says he’d be open to a rematch somewhere down the line.

“We’ll have to see what comes around but I would be up for that fight again. I know he said that he didn’t box to his full potential and he made a few mistakes in training in the lead up to the fight so I’m sure he’d like another crack at me,” said Jupp.

He added: “I still don’t think I boxed 100% in that fight so there’s a lot of things we can improve on. I did a few things wrong and when I made him make mistakes I didn’t always make him pay for them so we’ve been working on that in the gym. It definitely gave my career a boost, a lot of people got to see me fight and I hadn’t really been involved in a big show like that before so it was good.”

The humble Jupp, who turned pro at 19, is coached and managed by ex-pro welterweight Derek Grainger at the Ringside Gym in Bow, East London. Currently enjoying a nine fight winning streak, Jupp is looking to test himself against the very best in Britain.

He said: “I don’t really zone in on one person. I would say the top two are Liam Walsh and Stephen Smith are a bit further ahead than everyone else but there’s some good names below them in the top ten. There’s some exciting domestic fights to be made and I’d be happy to fight anyone if it’s good for my career.”

Welshman Liam Williams headlines the show when he defends his British and Commonwealth Super-Welterweight titles against Rotherham’s Nav Mansouri.

Chief support on the card sees Belvedere’s George Jupp, fresh from his massive upset of Mitchell Smith in December, make the first defence of his WBO Intercontinental Super-Featherweight title.

Asian boxers are the new powerhouse in the sport and a strong contingent led by Indian superstar and Olympic Bronze Medalist Vijender Singh, plus hot Acton flyweight prospect Prince Patel, the professional debuts of amateur stars Sanjeev Sahota from Romford, and the Prince Naseem Hamed prodigy from Staines-upon-Thames Tony Bange.

Big-punching Southampton super-welterweight Joe Pigford, exciting Harrow welterweight prospect Jez Smith, younger brother of Mitchell, and rising West Ham super-lightweight talent Ben Smith complete the card.

Tickets priced at £45 Unreserved and and £65 Ringside Reserved are available from www.eventim.co.uk or 0844 249 1000 and www.ticketmaster.co.uk or 0844 844 0444

SAN ANTONIO – Very good artists inspire imitation – why so much boxing writing of the 1970s and 1980s looks like stepped-on Hemingway – but great artists inspire others to pursue their craft regardless where it leads. Thursday evening in this city’s irreplaceable McNay Art Museum, as part of a celebration of local artists, painter Stefani Job Spears gave a talk about her abstract paintings and the glorying in color complements and fractals that charges her process that creates them.

And layers – she spoke quite a lot about layers. Many of her watercolors have a hundred layers to them, each layer equal parts mathematically insignificant and aesthetically essential, and this layering effect was one she discovered, in part, by making colored paper, a process through which the fibers in pulp are blended by crushing. Layers consume Spears’ recent work as they consume every artist’s work, often in a proportionality with the artist’s seriousness.

What plagues Spears’ work, or would were she not adamantly opposed to such a plaguing, is what plagues all who obsessively pursue layers: a lack of tension, which resolves itself as muddiness in visual arts and noisiness in music and nervously linked anecdotes in writing. The most painful part: Artistic tension follows a balloon’s model – it is generally greatest, with metaphors stretched to shiny, the instant before it deflates with a pop. Artists abandon works eventually after this deflation happens though never soon enough; they set out to reconcile the sudden lack of tension by rebuilding, relayering, repiling, but such conscientiousness seldom wins the day because the composition grows only looser as the colors muddle, and all the while, crueler still, their memory of the gorgeous tension their works comprised, the wrenching into existence their creation celebrated, now overdyes each forwards gaze they cast at their suddenly unsatisfactory and worsening piece.

How does one know when to stop layering? There are two paths that both reduce, eventually, to luck – for the greatest works of art ever evince chance as much as another quality, and the greatest artists never evince any emotion more than gratitude, profound thankfulness for their fortune – and those paths are: 1. Luck, and 2. Feedback properly observed. The works that endure best, that receive the highest appraisals centuries after their births, are those that impress us as relying least on chance, though there’s a good chance this is our misperception more than any actuality their creators would recognize.

Miguel de Cervantes, we assume, had no chance of getting lucky for two books and 700 pages of Don Quijote, and this is close to true as we’re likely to come. But the genesis of his idea, to take histories purporting to nonfiction and have them drive a reader to a portrayal of delusion – and again, friends, this question is the reason the book endures: Was Quijote delusional, or by inventing a character publicly addled enough for others to play along with him, for their own amusement, did Quijote accomplish a life very near his ideal of one? – probably arrived in a seed owed to good fortune, and besides, anyone who has read or reread El Quijote in English or Spanish can attest to something nearly objective like: If Cervantes got unlucky on hundreds of those pages, so unlucky in his first book, in fact, he spent a couple lucky sentences in book two making fun of his own terrible writing, it is not untoward to suggest his best sentences, too, owed some to chance.

Enough with the tautologies; luck is luck, yes, and? – take us to feedback (which is the feedback). That is what Stefani Job Spears was about in her Thursday discussion when she said she did not allow a work to muddy itself beyond repair, and she did not allow her students to allow their works to muddy themselves beyond repair. She believes and teaches a work must be wrestled back from that muddy brink, and it’s a wonderful technique that saves future works while appearing to save present ones. Knowing one may not abandon a work whose canvas has popped, oozing its tension from electric orange to beige to mahogany, see, makes an artist err just to the restrained side of his next work; the anxiety that leads him to continue adding layers, to continue pursuing a beautiful truth, finds itself moderated by a cultivated anxiety about what destruction one last layer might bring, and here is where a tension begets another tension that amplifies the tension created by two other tensions, and these iterated tensions make a work that endures.

To those who might rebut “Works fail all the time – look at this column,” Spears’ process counterargues: Completed works fail, yes, but a work cannot be a failure till it is completed, and considering works incomplete until they succeed remedies that indeed (a spirally argument more than a circular one). And this brings us to the essence of the approach: Works must only be completed in order to achieve acclaim or revenue; an artist who finds his life’s highest fulfillment in creation’s very process needn’t ever declare a work completed, and therefore mustn’t ever concede failure, even while the ecstatic tension of his creating, feedback’s feedback, continues its accumulation.

Until this column ends, it does not fail.

Rocky Martinez to defend 130 lb crown against Miguel Berchelt

roman-martinez
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com. Roman “Rocky” Martinez will defend his WBO Super Featherweight crown against Miguel Berchelt on March 12 in Mexico.

“I learned from the defeat against [Moises Flores] and now I am preparing 100 percent under the tutelage of trainer Alfredo Caballero for this opportunity to crown myself as champion,” said Berchelt, who won all four of his fights in 2015 by knockout.

“We hope to go to Merida March 6th or March 7th to acclimatize Rocky there. Although we know that Merida is at sea level, we want Rocky to get used to the weather, too,” said Martinez promoter Peter Rivera. “We also hope (Zanfer Promotions) sends us the date of Rocky’s flight because there is a group of Puerto Rican fans who will make the trip to Mexico to see the fight.

“Rocky is training hard, as always, to get in the best condition for this fight and bring another victory to Puerto Rico.”

“We are working hard for Berchelt. We are confident in a victory and after this bout, we want to make a fight with [titleholder Francisco] Vargas to unify the titles,” Martinez said. “We know it will be a tremendous fight. I know that Vargas is a warrior like me who has always said he would like to face me. So after beating Berchelt, we can unify the titles.”

Jessie Magdaleno stays unbeaten in renewed pursuit of a world title

By Norm Frauenheim-
J.Magdaleno_Castaneda _140215_001a
PHOENIX – Jessie Magdaleno jumped onto the ring post and gestured at his waist as if to say he needs a belt.

A world title belt.

His record, at least, says Magdaleno is good fit for at least a shot at one. He ‘s unbeaten. The important O on the right side of his ledger is still there after a seventh round stoppage of Filipino Rey Perez in SoloBoxeo televised bout Saturday night at Celebrity Theatre.

“I want a shot at a world title,’’ Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs) said after stopping Perez (20-8, 5 KOs) with a body shot at 2:51 of the seventh round. “I think it’s time.’’

If it is, it’s arrived in part because Magdaleno is going to his future. He has reunited with trainer Joel Diaz and perhaps reunited with goal that a couple years ago appeared to be a good bet.

In the first half of the televised doubleheader, Phoenix featherweight Carlos Castro (15-0, 6 KOs) needed his agile feet, long jab and toughness to win a six-round unanimous decision over rugged Rafael Reyes (6-6, 5 KOs).

Reyes employed every trick in the book – and some not in the book – in an attempt to draw Castro into brawl. Often, he succeeded by holding and landing blows right at the belt line of Castro’s trunks.

The referee never ruled that any punch was a low blow. But in the third and fourth rounds, a few were low enough to slow down Castro, who in the fifth and sixth kept his distance. The crowd booed. But Castro got the last laugh. The last cheer, too. To win, he did what he had to.
Best Of The Undercard

Best of the Undercard
Phoenix light-heavyweight Trevor McCumby entered the ring to Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues. He had Superman’s logo on his socks. He had it all, leaving poor James Freeman with no chance and only Boogie written across the back of his trunks.

Sure enough, it was Boogie down not long after the last lyric in Cash’s memorable song. McCumby (22-0, 17 KOs) walked all over Freeman (9-8, 7 KOs), dropping the Texan to his knees in the first round and stopping him at 1:48 of the second with a right hand followed by a thudding combination.
The Rest

The Rest
Phoenix junior-welterweight Luis Olivares (10-0, 7 KOs) picked up where stable mate McCumby left off, scoring a first-round knockout with a liver shot that dropped Mexican Omar Garcia (4-2-, 1 KO) onto the ring’s apron, where he stayed until the evident pain subsided.

Phoenix super-bantamweight Paul Romero (7-0, 1 KO) entertained the customers in a near-capacity crowd, scoring a unanimous decision over a bloodied Jaime Gutierrez (5-11) of Mexico.

In a back-and-forth battle of Phoenix flyweights, Luis Espinoza (2-0) scored a first-round knockdown and then relied on a punishing body shots that left red welts on Luis Guerrero’s waistline and a loss by unanimous decision on his record (0-2).

A sure sign of a well-matched card is a good swing bout and that’s what the crowd got from Houston super-featherweight Jesse Garcia (2-0, 2 KOs), who was losing when he threw a lightning-bolt of a left for a third-round stoppage of Derick Bartlemay (0-2) of Eugene, Ore.

The best in local and international MMA athletes graced the stage at ONE: TRIBE OF WARRIORS to provide an unforgettable experience for the packed crowd in Jakarta. In the main event, Luis Santos returned to the ONE Championship cage with another epic performance, defeating Rafael Silva by technical knockout.

In the main event of the evening, Luis “Sapo” Santos of Brazil delivered the goods in a successful return to the ONE Championship cage by making quick work of Portugal’s Rafael “The Machine” Silva. After a brief moment where both fighters carefully sized each other up, Santos unleashed a single knee to Silva’s body which dropped him to the mat. A technical ground kick from Santos landed shortly after and the referee stepped in to stop the contest.

An exciting battle of dynamic strikers ensued as Kotetsu “No Face” Boku went head-to-head against Vincent “Magnivincent” Latoel. After an electric first round from both fighters, Boku’s accurate striking started to take its toll in the second. With Boku in full mount, the Japanese veteran went immediately for the ground-and-pound to earn the technical knockout.

Colossal heavyweights Marcin Prachnio and Alexandre Machado traded some serious leather at the center of the cage in a crowd-pleasing fight. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Machado looked to take matters to the ground but Prachnio had different plans. After rocking Machado with a punch, Prachnio followed up with a lethal combination of strikes, forcing the stoppage.

American wrestler Andrew Leone earned a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over the durable Koetsu Okazaki of Japan after spending two years away from professional competition. Leone drove Okazaki with his cage control and various takedowns throughout the fight. Although Okazaki found success with ground-and-pound late in the second round, Leone regained command in the third by taking Okazaki’s back and threatening with a choke. All three judges saw the bout in favor of the American.

Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen of the Netherlands made quick work of featherweight prospect Rocky “The Outlaw” Batolbatol of the Philippines, forcing the latter to tap out due to a rear naked choke in round one. Batolbatol used his boxing to keep Engelen temporarily at bay but once the Dutch fighter was able to close the gap, things went south quickly for the Filipino. An outside leg trip brought the fight to the mat where Engelen was quick to secure Batolbatol’s back and lock in the submission.

The Philippines’ Trestle Tan returned to the winner’s circle with a submission victory over Djatmiko Waluyo. Tan secured a rear naked choke to force the tap in the first round.

“Unstoppable” Angela Lee continued her winning ways by defeating Rebecca Heintzman of the United States with another submission — her fourth straight as a professional. Although Heintzman had some success in striking exchanges, Lee dominated in the grappling department, eventually securing a rear naked choke to force the stoppage in the second round.

Jimmy “The Silencer” Yabo of the Philippines made quick work of Pakistan’s Bashir Ahmad, earning the stoppage in under 30 seconds. As Ahmad rushed in aggressively, Yabo stepped back to unleash a sharp counter right hook which landed on the button, dropping the Pakistani. With Ahmad out in one fell swoop, the referee called a halt to the bout.

Indonesians Yohan Mulia Legowo and Mario Satya Wirawan set the pace of the entire card with a furious energy, attacking each other with vicious strikes from the opening bell. After the action wound up against the cage, Legowo secured a standing Guillotine choke and pulled guard, forcing Wirawan to tap out.

Li Hao Jie of China and Jerome S Paye of Liberia kicked off ONE: TRIBE OF WARRIORS with a gruelling three-round scrap. Li dominated in his ONE Championship debut with striking and takedowns to earn a unanimous decision.

UNDEFEATED ADAM LOPEZ OUTPOINTS MARIO MUÑOZ IN MAIN EVENT ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION FROM ADRIAN PHILLIPS BALLROOM IN HISTORIC BOARDWALK HALL

Adam Lopez
ATLANTIC CITY (Feb. 20, 2016) – Adam “Mantequilla” Lopez (15-0, 7 KOs), of San Antonio, Texas, remained unbeaten and took another step toward becoming a full-fledged contender by winning a hard-fought unanimous 10-round decision over previously undefeated Mario “Yayo” Muñoz (16-1-1, 10 KOs), of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in Friday’s main event on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME from the Adrian Phillips Ballroom in Historic Boardwalk Hall.

“Lopez punched harder and controlled the tempo,” ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood said. “He overcame the problem with his right eye and now he’s 3-0 with three undefeated fighters on ShoBox, so he’s indeed a prospect to watch.”

The highly regarded Lopez, making his third ShoBox appearance and main event debut, survived a nasty cut over his right eye to win by the scores of 98-92 twice and 97-93. There were no knockdowns.

“This was my toughest fight as a pro and I think I proved a lot,’’ said Lopez, who entered the ring as the WBA No. 8 contender at 122 pounds. “I showed I could fight through a lot of adversity. The cut in my eye was definitely a factor for my performance in a couple of rounds, but I put the pedal to the medal and got through it. I landed the more telling shots.

“This is the kind of fight I can learn from. Fighting through the cut and all the head butts, and still persevering. These are the kinds of fights that make fighters better. You don’t learn a thing by blowing guys out.

“Muñoz was a good fighter and landed some tight shots on me, but I was definitely the better fighter and there was no question I would get the decision. I thought I might stop him in the eighth or ninth, but it didn’t happen.’’

There was little known about Muñoz going into Friday, but the mystery man from Mexico who was making his United States debut and first start outside of Mexico performed well and showed solid skills and ability.

“I’m very disappointed in the decision,’’ Muñoz said. “I’m a better fighter than he is. I landed more combinations. My face is unmarked, look at his. He hurt me more from his low blows and head butts than he did with his punches. I’d love to fight him again.’’

With the defeat, Muñoz became the 142nd boxer on ShoBox to suffer his first defeat. Two fights earlier, Lavisas “Red Williams (8-1-1, 3 KOs), of Rochester, N.Y., became the 141st ShoBox boxer to suffer his initial setback when he lost by seventh round TKO to O’Shaquie “Ice Water” Foster (10-1, 7 KOs), of Orange, Texas.

Foster, a former amateur standout, rebounded from a poor outing in his ShoBox debut to register a seventh-round TKO over Williams. Foster dropped the outclassed southpaw four times. After the final knockdown in the seventh, the fight was stopped at 52 seconds into the round.

In the co-feature of a ShoBox quadrupleheader, undefeated super middleweight Ronald “Flatline” Ellis (12-0-1, 10 KOs), of Lynn, Mass., and Washington D.C.’s Jerry “The King’s Son” Odom (13-2-1, 12 KOs) fought to a hard-fought eight-round majority draw. A close, competitive contest throughout was scored 78-74 for Ellis and 76-76 apiece.

In the opening fight of the telecast, John “Madman” Magda (11-0-1, 7 KOs), of Rutherford, N.Y., and Philadelphia’s Christopher “Ice Cold” Brooker (7-1-1, 5 KOs) fought to a disputed eight-round split draw in a super middleweight matchup that most felt Brooker won. At the finish, one judge had it for Magda (77-74), one had it for Brooker (78-74) and one had it even at 76-all.

“I thought that was a terrible decision,’’ Farhood said. “The judges were all over the place. I think Brooker did enough to win. He was the more aggressive fighter and landed the bigger punches. I was very surprised by the result that it was a draw.”

Ellis, a five-year-pro who hurt his right hand at the end of the third, was pleased with his overall performance, not so much the result.

“I think I did a good job tonight,’’ said Ellis, the older brother of welterweight prospect Rashidi Ellis who’d won four straight by knockout, including a second-round TKO over Jas Phipps in his last start last Aug. 29. “I started strong and I showed that I belong here, in a nationally televised show. I’m happy with what I did.

“I showed tonight that I can counter a busy fighter. I can take a punch. I can also be a boxer-puncher. Odom tried to do his thing at the beginning, but he just couldn’t do it with me. I followed my trainer’s advice. I punched, I stood back. I used my left hook. I think I really hurt him a couple times.

“I won that fight. I’m sure. At first, I banged with him and then I showed my boxing. It was easy in there, I won that fight. He never hurt me. I’ll be back. You will be seeing a lot of me in the future.”

Odom, a top amateur and 2012 National Golden Gloves Champion at 178 pounds who was looking to turn it around after losing two of his last three, was content with the decision although he felt he’d won his first fight in seven months.
“I can’t be disappointed with the decision because I fought my heart out.’’ Odom said. “I know I hurt him. He hurt me a bit in the second, but I got back on my feet and I kept on going.
“I feel I pulled it out in the last rounds. I worked the body, I think I did some damage. Ellis looked hurt.
“I mean no disrespect, but I felt I definitely did enough to win, but the judges saw it differently.”
Said Farhood: “Ellis-Odom was a strange fight. At times it was a brawl, and at times it was a boxing match. At times, one fighter came forward and at times the other fighter came forward. I thought Odom did enough in the last couple of rounds to salvage a draw and it turns out that is what the judges scored, a draw. So, I think the judges got it right on that fight.”
Foster decked Williams in the second, third, fourth and seventh rounds. Three of the knockdowns appeared to result from a push, but Williams’ gloves touched the canvas each time so they went into the books as knockdowns.

“I think it was a great win for Foster, because he looked so bad when he fought on ShoBox last time outdoor in Las Vegas,’’ Farhood said. “And this kind he showed the kind of skills that enable him to be a good amateur. He showed the kind of skills that will make him a legitimate prospect as a pro. It was a very good win for him. He showed speed. He showed his movement, his boxing abilities and he scored four knockdowns, and you can’t ask for much better than that.”

“This is a huge relief for me,’’ Foster said. “I feel great. I think people saw a glimpse of the kind of fighter I can be tonight. That wasn’t me in my first ShoBox fight. I don’t know if I froze under the lights or if I lost because of the cold weather outside, but I wasn’t nearly as confident for that fight as I was tonight and it affected my performance.

“I had a tremendous training camp, my best camp ever, which played a big part in my confidence tonight. I thank God for the opportunity to fight on national television again and I’m already looking forward to the next time.’’
The previously undefeated Williams confessed he was unable to his rhythm. “For some reason, I just could not get loose. I had a cold, but I won’t take anything away from Foster. He knocked me down, but I actually thought he pushed me down most of those times.
“I learned something tonight. I can’t do what I did. I can’t wait on my opponent. I have to attack first. I’ll be will be back.”
There were no knockdowns in the Brooker-Magda battle. One judge scored it for southpaw and local favorite going in, Magda 77-74, one had it 78-74 for Brooker and one had it 76-76 even.

After a few rounds of solid back-and-forth exchanges, Brooker seemed to dominate in the eyes of everyone but the judges. The ShoBox announcers had Brooker a close but clear winner and the fans booed the decision. According to SHO STATS, Brooked outpunched and outlanded Magda by a significant margin. Brooker landed 152 of 481 punches (32 percent) while Magda connected on 78 f 268 (29 percent).

Brooker was visibly upset with the verdict.

“I don’t train eight hours a day, seven days a week to get this kind of decision. That was not a draw, I clearly won the fight,’’ he said. “I don’t want to take away from Magda. He’s strong fighter and he countered well, but I showed everybody that hard work beats talent any day.

“I won this fight. I was the aggressor. I threw some big punches. My right was key. In the beginning Magda was fast, but I placed my punches and I know I did enough to win the fight.’’

“I feel OK, but this was a tough fight,” said Magda. “He stayed on me and pressed forward, which we knew he would. But he was stronger than I thought. I’ll have to watch the tape again, but I thought I landed the more effective punches.’’

The ShoBox quadrupleheader will re-air this week as follows:

DIEGO DE LA HOYA SECURES A VICTORY OVER ARTURO BADILLO AT A SOLD OUT LA FIGHT CLUB ON FEB. 19

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 19, 2016) – In front of a sold out crowd, and the third consecutive sold out show for Golden Boy Promotions, Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya (14-0, 8 KOs) scored a stellar victory over Arturo “Fuerte” Badillo (20-10, 18 KOs) showing his speed and power in a 4th round victory in the second installment of the popular Los Angeles staple, LA FIGHT CLUB broadcast live on Estrella TV.

Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya was joined ringside by former middleweight world champion Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas, KABC-TV personality Alysha del Valle, and YouTube sensations David Alvarez and Jorge Munoz.

Golden Boy fighters Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez, Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Pablo “The Shark” Rubio, Joet Gonzalez, Edgar Valerio, Jonathan “Thunder” Navarro, Ivan “Striker” Delgado, Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Jesus “Renuente” Soto Korass, “King” Gabriel Rosado, Roberto “Massa” Ortiz, Joseph “Diamente” Aguirre, and former world champion Randy “El Matador” Caballero caught up ringside to cheer on the action.

Owner of five wins in 2015, including a 10-round victory over Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz that earned him the WBC Youth World Super Bantamweight title, the 21-year-old phenom has passed all his tests thus far as a professional. Tonight’s face-off against Badillo was no exception as De La Hoya showed his quick hand speed that had his opponent cornered throughout the fight resulting in a shocking left hook body shot in this heavy hitting headliner knock out. By the 4th round, both fighters exchanged celebratory glove bumps in a great display of sportsmanship.

“At first, the excitement got the best of me and I was trying to look for a knockout but in the second round I realized I was going to play in to his game,” said de la Hoya of his big win. “I decided to change the pace and take my time and just play to safe. By the third round, I realized he was getting tired and that’s when I decided to take advantage and dedicate the third round to knocking him out.”

“I knew about Diego de la Hoya’s fighting style, and I was prepared to fight a very tough opponent,” said Badillo. “I felt comfortable in the ring in the first couple of rounds. I don’t feel hurt, but that shot in the liver really harmed me. Unfortunately, those things happen and all I can do is go back to the gym and train for my next fight.”

Los Angeles local Carlos “The Solution” Morales (13-1-3, 6 KOs) faced experienced fighter Omar “Heroe” Tienda (14-3, 8 KOs) of Nuevo Leon, Mexico in an exciting 10-round super featherweight bout. The heavy-hitting match, kept both fighters busy throughout the fight that went the scheduled 10-rounds. In the end it was Morales’ precise power-punches that secured him the victory by unanimous decision.

“I was hoping to knock him out in the 5th round but he proved to be a tough fighter and I had to outbox him,” said Carlos Morales. “Even though he cut me up, I knew I was being affected with my punches and was breaking him down slowly. I know 2016 will bring opportunities for me in the ring.”

“I first came here expecting a different outcome,” said Omar Tienda. “One thing I can say is that we were both warriors in the ring. He’s a strong fighter and I know that we will be able to develop a friendship outside the ring.”

With no signs of slowing down, local Los Angeles native and fan favorite Nick Arce (7-0, 6 KOs) brought his high energy in to the ring and defended his winning steak by staying light on his feet and blocking punches from opponent Luis “Lichito” Lizarraga Jr. (5-8-1, 2 KOs). Lizarraga Jr. held his own until the end when Arce’s swift punches proved too much to handle in their six-round bout, and Arce was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

“My opponent was well trained and came out to fight with his high endurance. I came for the KO but I’ll settle for the unanimous delicious. This is motivation to keep on training to win those big victories,” said Arce of his win. “My fans love coming to see me fight because they can tell in my style that I love life and think it is too beautiful and too short to waste.”

Oscar Duarte (4-0-1, 2 KOs) of Parral, Mexico was triumphant against Georgia’s Archie Weah (1-5) in their scheduled four round super featherweight face off. Duarte showed his power with a hard-hitting right that knocked down Weah in the first round. The fight went the distance as Duarte was claimed the winner by unanimous decision in his debut as a Golden Boy Promotions fighter.

“I was really excited to knock down my opponent in the first round, but I felt I needed keep my pace” said Duarte. “My strategy for the fight was to show my strength and keep my composure. I’m looking forward to getting back in to the gym and getting ready for my next fight.”

Las Vegas’ Francisco Esparza (3-0), Fernando Vargas’ protégé, defended his undefeated record with a bout against Antonio Martinez (3-6, 3 KOs) of Durango, MEX. Punches were flying as the fight went the scheduled four rounds with Esparza delivering the final winning blows to a unanimous decision victory.

“I’m feeling great now that I’ve got another big win,” said Esparza. “My strategy is all in staying low so my opponent can’t catch me. I’ll be back in the gym ASAP working hard and hopefully moving on up on 6 rounder’s.”

Here are the quotes from the participants.

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin
“This is a big opportunity for Dominic Wade, I remember what it was like before I became a champion, I’m sure he’s very hungry for this opportunity and will train hard.”

“Bernard Hopkins has a great record of title defenses, but my focus is not on his record but on my story.”

“This is my next step and I’m very excited to continue building my story. I have a great deal of respect for Dominic. I look forward to fighting at my second home, the Forum on April 23.”

“It’s a joke for Billy Jo Saunders to want to face me right after we announced this fight, he’s not serious.”

“I want to fight Canelo and many big fights, big shows, but it’s not frustrating for me to
face other fighters.”

Dominic Wade
“I’m ready for this, people ask if I’m nervous, not at all. I’ve been a fighter all my life, always wanted to be a world champion. When this opportunity came up I was so excited I could have run 30 miles.”

“I know how good Gennady is but I’ll be ready on April 23 to be victorious and show the world who the best middleweight is.”

“I see flaws in his game that I can take advantage of. He’s very strong but also very basic in
some ways.”

Tom Loeffler/K2 Promotions
“Our philosophy has always been to work with any manager or promoter for Gennady. We did this deal within a week working with Al Haymon and Tom Brown.”

“From a commercial standpoint, the fight is bigger if Gennady and Canelo both win their upcoming fights.”

“Gennady is the first non-Puerto Rican fighter to sell out Madison Square Garden in many years.”

“Building his commercial appeal internationally, Gennady’s becoming a much bigger star.”

“I have to continue to have multiple options when putting together fights for Gennady.”

“With Gennady’s commercial value we can make lucrative offers such as we did for
Billy Jo Saunders.”

“My commitment to Gennady is to work towards him becoming the undisputed middleweight champion.”

Jerry Vines/Manager of Wade
“Thanks to Al Haymon who brought us to this fight for which we had no hesitation. They could have fought someone else but they wanted the fight and we wanted the fight.

Much thanks to Dominic for taking the fight, he was very excited when offered this challenge.”
We got this done in a week which tells you how excited we were to make this fight.”

Abel Sanchez, Trainer of Golovkin
“I have to remind everyone as Gennady says, he wants all four middleweight belts, so It’s not hard to keep him focused. This keeps him motivated, he wants to be the undisputed middleweight champion. No way was he going to give up the IBF belt.”

Wade is not spectacular but he is undefeated, I’ve followed him since he was an amateur. We’ll prepare for the best middleweight in the world and we’ll be ready.”

“It’s a big part of history to break Bernard Hopkins’ record and will be great for Gennady’s record. Wade is the next step; we’re going to prepare for the utmost. “

Jay Stancil/Trainer of Wade
“We will be ready and prepared for this moment. We’ve already started training and we’re ready to pull the upset and shock the world. Dominic is hungry to win the world title and he will be ready to on April 23.”

SHAWN PORTER MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Shawn Porter
LAS VEGAS (February 19, 2016) – Welterweight star “Showtime” Shawn Porter opened up his training camp to media Thursday at Porter Hy-Performance Center in Las Vegas as he prepares for his primetime showdown with welterweight world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman on Saturday, March 12 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS presented by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) from Mohegan Sun Resort in Connecticut.

Televised action begins at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT with an all-action showdown between former multiple division world champions Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel.

Porter worked out for media along with his father and trainer, Ken Porter as he looks to become a welterweight world champion for the second time. Porter defeated multiple-division champion Adrien Broner in a primetime PBC main event last year and is looking to again find success under the bright lights.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, are priced at
$300, $150, $75 and $35 (plus applicable fees) and are on sale now through
Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to ticketmaster.com; call (800) 745
3000; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet. Tickets are also available at the Mohegan Sun
Box Office.

Here is what Porter and his father had to say Thursday:

SHAWN PORTER

On training camp…

“Training camp is going great. It’s been hard work as always and nothing really different specifically for this fight. Obviously it is always a different game plan for a different fighter but that’s about it.

“I’m not making too many adjustments from my previous fight, just taking what I learn from each fight and take those learning experiences with you. Going into this fight we will definitely have some of our past experiences show up.

“It is getting closer. I feel it every day. It’s approaching and the excitement is brewing. The closer it gets the more excited and more focused that I get.

On being perceived as the underdog…

“I do not feel like I am coming in as the underdog. In order to be the champion, you have to beat the champion. That is my outlook on this fight, not only to outpoint him but to make it very decisive and dominate the fight.

”My motivation is to prove the doubters wrong.

“I have faced a tougher opposition than Keith Thurman. I feel like that may work most to my advantage. I think that there will come points in this fight where I will put him up against things that he has never been up against. It is all about how he reacts to what I throw at him.

“My plan is to go in there and shake him up, make him uncomfortable and carry the fight just like that.

“I am ready and whatever Thurman has to bring. I’m ready for 12 rounds, I’m ready to knock him out. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to win. I’m ready.

On sparring with Thurman…

“We expect what we saw in sparring with him to show up in the fight. He moved around a lot when we sparred. There weren’t very many clean shots landed by either of us, but I know from sparring with him that I have to be aggressive and that I have to cutoff the ring.

“I would say that for the majority of this fight it is probably going to be me as the aggressor. He likes to bully guys at the beginning of the fight to wear them down to feel himself out.. We’re expecting him to move a lot more against me.

“We’re going to be aggressive, we’re going to be smart, we’re looking beyond this fight.

“In my last fight I didn’t get hit very much and I am taking that same mindset and defense into this fight.

On being the next Floyd Mayweather Jr…

“I am expecting to beat Keith and be the guy that everyone looks at.

“When you go up against someone at a high level like this, you go up and you show out.

“As far as Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, I think those faces are going away. The welterweight class is exciting and there’s going to be a new face on the top of that ranking. I’d like that face to be me.

“I don’t make any predictions; I just know I am going to win.

“I have been waiting for this fight since 2013. I had just gotten my title then and I could see the way his career was moving that there was a collision course. We didn’t know how long this fight would take to happen or when it would happen, but we knew it was coming.

“When I was told this fight was happening all I could think was ‘Ok, let’s do it’ and it took some time to make the fight happen but when we finally did our faceoff, it felt great to look him in the eyes and let him know ‘I’m coming after you.’

“For me to fight Keith it has always been something that was a part of my career, all business not personal. It was just something that I needed to do to get to where I want to be.

“Keith Thurman is a good fighter. Nothing really sticks out to me as something I should worry about. He’s a good athlete and a good boxer, but he is very beatable, he just hasn’t been beat yet.

“You’re only as good as you’re last competition. If you look at the Kell Brook fight, I was not as good as I should’ve been. Since then I am very good, but still I feel that you are only as good as your last fight until you prove otherwise.

“It is and isn’t personal. For Keith to be considered one of the top dogs in this weight class, it is personal to me to beat him and reign over him. Other than that, it is all business.”

KEN PORTER

On being his son’s trainer…

“Because I have the history of working with a lot of top-level amateurs who have moved on to the professional level, I think that Shawn sees that in me as an edge.”

On his history with Keith Thurman…

“I know him very well. I’ve had opportunities to work with him in the amateurs. I’ve had opportunities to work with him in the pros. I’ve worked in his corner in an amateur fight before, I’ve worked in his corner in a pro fight.

“Keith knows Shawn, they’ve sparred about 30 rounds. He knows speed and won’t come in the ring trying to land a significant shot from the beginning. If he’s throwing that punch, he’s probably running the other direction at the same time.

“I would challenge [Thurman] to come in the ring and fight, but I know he’s going to fight. I know he will try to outbox us and try to land a slick and unexpected punch. Anyone can land a shot on you, that happens, but it’s what you do after the punch that counts.

“We’re looking forward to trading punches, boxing with him, slugging with him. We’re looking for a fight.”

On what it will take to win this fight…

“At this point in time, there’s going to be a lot of adjustments that have to be made, and I can’t just determine what it’s going to take to do it, but I know it’s going to take everything – speed, quickness, power, aggressiveness, conditioning, making adjustments mentally – it’s an intellectual fight.”

MARTIN VS. JOSHUA TICKETS GONE IN 90 SECONDS

Charles Martin (640x480)
Tickets for the IBF World Heavyweight title blockbuster between champion Charles Martin and Olympic gold medal sensation Anthony Joshua MBE sold-out in just 90 seconds on Friday ahead of their clash at The O2 in London on April 9, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Martin travels to England for the first defence of the title that he landed in Brooklyn in January against Vyacheslav Glazkov, and the California-based St Louis powerhouse has told Joshua that he’ll knock him out to retain his title – and take his fans in the process.

“I’m strong and I’ll be ready to KO him and win over his fans,” said Martin. “The boxing scene here is booming and I want to be a part of it.

“It’s just business – and I’ll show on the night that I mean business. I will return to the UK in April in phenomenal shape, ready for battle. He’s a pretty specimen and those muscles are fine and dandy, but when he gets tired, I get stronger, when he starts to go downhill. There’s no fear in me. I’ve been walking this earth for 29 years now, I am afraid of no man. I want what he’s got – the praise, the attention and the fans – plain and simple.”

Martin brings 21 KOs from his 23 wins to the Greenwich venue that Joshua has turned into his hometown fortress. The London 2012 Super-Heavyweight king as recorded six of his 15 KO wins at the arena, with the latest in December against Dillian Whyte – but Martin says that fight, and his own win over Glazkov, has no bearing on April’s showdown.

“People say you are only as good as your last fight, but that’s in the past,” said Martin. “When he’s in there with me I’m going to keep my eyes on him, stay sharp – it’s not him and Dillian Whyte, it’s him and Charles Martin, I’m going to study him in my camp and I’ll keep my eyes on him until the job is done.”

Tickets for April 9 are also available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing.

TETE EYES SHOWDOWN AGAINST RIGONDEAUX

South African super-puncher Zolani Tete says he’d love to take on pound-for-pound megastar Guillermo Rigondeaux.

The former IBF World Super-Flyweight Champion from Mdanste in the Eastern Cape will feature on the same action-packed card as the unbeaten Cuban at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday 12th March, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Bantamweight Tete harbours dreams of becoming one of the greats of African boxing and is already making a name for himself as the most explosive puncher in his division with an incredible 18 knockouts in 22 wins.

The clinical southpaw says he could move up to super-bantamweight to face Rigondeaux after he takes on Mexican Jose Santos Gonzales.

He said: “You never know what the future holds but I won’t rule anything out. It’s one of those big fights you always dream of being involved in. Everyone wants to take on the very best and if the time is right it could happen. Rigondeaux is an amazing boxer and he is rated as one of the best for a reason so I have a lot of respect for him; he’s a true champion,”

“He’s a southpaw and I’m a southpaw, we’re both good boxers so it would be a great fight. It wouldn’t be easy but I believe I could beat him. I think it would be an entertaining fight for the fans that’s for sure.”

Touted as one of the best boxers to come out of Africa in recent years, Tete is determined to become a multi-weight world champion and plans on making the super-flyweight, bantamweight and super-bantamweight divisions his own.

He said: “It’s one of those big fights I’m looking for but Rigondeaux is two divisions higher than me and there are guys in this division and the next that I’m looking to beat first. When I decide to go up I’ll fight Rigondeaux or whoever is champion at the time,”

“When I’m changing weight division my trainers will make sure that I work on my power and strength so I’ll be more powerful than I am at super-featherweight. Moving up a weight won’t be a problem for me and I won’t lose my sting.”

Carl Frampton will defend his IBF super-bantamweight title against Scott Quigg on Saturday and the powerful Tete believes he has what it takes to beat the both of them.

He said: “I’d definitely fight one of them in the near future. With the skills and talent I have I believe I could conquer them. I am not taking anything away from them, yes they are true champions but I think I’ve got what it takes to put my name at the top of the pile.”

Flanagan v Mathews headlines an action packed card that also features one of the worlds greatest boxers, Guillermo Rigondeaux, taking on Merseyside hero Jazza Dickens; another star of world boxing, dynamite punching South African Zolani Tete challenges for the Vacant IBF International Bantamweight Championship against Jose Santos Gonzalez; Birmingham ace Tommy Langford defends his WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title against Lewis Taylor; hard-hitting Ellesmere Port’s star Paul Butler will challenge for a championship belt; Blackpool’s Matty Askin defends his English Cruiserweight title against Swindon’s Lawrence Bennett, plus Indian superstar Vijender Singh makes his Liverpool debut. The undercard features some of the best talent in Merseyside: undefeated leading world title contender Kevin Satchell; red-hot prospect Steven Lewis; European Champion Ryan Farrag; Manchester prospects Macaulay McGowan and Zelfa Barrett and Leicester ace Lyon Woodstock complete the card.
