Over the 2nd half of the fight, Navarrete started taking control, but when the cut from Gonzalez seemed to worsen, he came back to land hard shots that would push Gonzalez back. In the end, the sheer volume was the difference for Gonzalez by scores of 118-110 and 116-112 twice.

EMANUEL NAVARRETE-JOET GONZALEZ & GIOVANI SANTILLAN-ANGEL RUIZ PRESS CONFERENCE NOTES & QUOTES

SAN DIEGO (Oct. 13, 2021)—One of Mexico’s most decorated champions, WBO featherweight king Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete, knows the challenge at hand is a formidable one. The former junior featherweight champion will make the second defense of his featherweight title against Joet Gonzalez this Friday at Pechanga Arena San Diego. Gonzalez is making his second attempt at a world title, while Navarrete hopes to improve to 10-0 in world title fights.

In the 10-round welterweight co-feature, San Diego native Giovani Santillan (27-0, 15 KOs) will take on the hard-charging Angel Ruiz (17-1, 12 KOs). Ruiz is coming off April’s decision win over the previously undefeated Bobirzhan Mominov.

At Wednesday’s final press conference, this is what the combatants had to say.

Emanuel Navarrete

“I feel very strong. I’ve seen changes in my body for the best, and I think this division is the best for me.”

“I think this is going to be a tough fight. He is a tough opponent. We are basically fighting in his hometown, closer to where he lives. Without a doubt, he’s a great fighter. He always comes forward. I expect a tough fight.”

“Moving up is not something that I’m considering now. I’m just focused on the fight with Joet. What I’ve heard is comments, but I’m not really thinking about moving up.”

Joet Gonzalez

On his first title shot against Shakur Stevenson

“Sometimes it’s just not your night. I work hard and train hard for every fight. I don’t take nobody lightly. It just simply wasn’t my night. I rebounded with a win over Marriaga, and I think I showed the public I’m here to fight the best out there.”

“It’s not an easy fight. It’s a tough fight. Navarrete has a style that’s very unique, very hard to figure out, and that’s why he’s a champion. I trained really hard, and I’m coming with everything. I’m planning on leaving Friday night with that belt.”

“It means everything. It’s my childhood dream. I always wanted to be a world champion. That’s why I started boxing in the beginning. That’s the plan, to bring that belt back home.”

Giovani Santillan

“This means a lot. It’s what we worked so hard for all my life. My dad and I always talked about having these big shows in San Diego and representing our city.”

“We’re focused. I’m lucky to have a huge support system. I got my friends and my family. They haven’t really been asking for free tickets. If anything, they’re letting me know, ‘Hey, I bought tickets. I bought this amount of tickets and am coming out to support you.'”

“I’m not sure how long ago it was that we sparred, maybe three, four years ago. We just went about five rounds. Good, hard sparring session, but I’m not judging him off of that sparring session or past fights. We’re working hard to prepare for the best version of him, and I’m bringing the best version of myself.”

“It’s very special for me to be fighting here in San Diego. I grew up close by here. To all my family and friends that are coming, expect the best version of me. I’m coming with everything.”

Angel Ruiz

“I learned a lot {with trainer Manny Robles} because he’s a great coach. He’s trained Oscar Valdez and Andy Ruiz Jr., and I learned a lot {under his tutelage}.”

“{Giovani and I} had great sparring. He’s a great fighter. I’m a great fighter, too. It was great work.”

“I lived all my life in Tijuana. I know San Diego. I lived a year here in Chula Vista. I’ll have a lot of the public here to support. This is my opportunity.”

Giovani SantillanTraining Camp Quotes

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 12, 2021) – Thompson Boxing’s unbeaten welterweight, Giovani Santillan (27-0, 15 KOs), will return to the ring this Friday October 15, 2021, against Angel Ruiz (17-1, 12 KOs), of Los Angeles, California.

The 10-round bout, shown live on ESPN+, will take place at the Pechanga Arena San Diego, in Santillan’s hometown of San Diego, CA, and will serve as the co-main event to Emanuel Navarrete’s (34-1, 29 KOs) WBO Featherweight title defense against Joet Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs).

This will be Santillan’s first fight in San Diego since 2014, and his second fight with head coach Robert Garcia, who has his father Memo Santillan in the corner as an assistant. Santillan has a co-promotional agreement with Top Rank Inc., who is promoting this event.

Here is what Santillan had to say about training camp, his matchup with Ruiz, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I have started working with Robert Garcia as well as with my father after the Antonio DeMarco fight, and this camp has been very productive. I was in the gym with great fighters like Jose Ramirez, Mikey Garcia, Vergil Ortiz, you name it, I was sparring the best. I am driving two-hours round trip multiple times a-week to get the best work possible, and I know that everything I put into this camp from time, money and sacrifice, will show up on this huge stage. I’ll be fighting in my hometown of San Diego, with a lot of family and friends in attendance, so I’ll be ready for war.”

On his matchup with Angel Ruiz:

“I sparred him a few years back, I am not taking much from the sparring since it is just sparring, but I know what he brings to the table. He is a good fighter, and I am well-prepared to face a warrior like him. This is the biggest fight of my life, and I am looking to put on a show – and make my name known in the welterweight division. I will put it this way, I won’t be surprised by what he does in the ring on Friday night.”

On fighting on ESPN+:

“It is a great moment in my career. Thompson Boxing and Top Rank have done wonders for me, allowing me to fight on such great cards, and this feels like a big moment in my career, fighting at home, on television, with the world watching. I didn’t come this far just to come this far. I want this to be a memorable moment and having a great network like ESPN+ stream this fight, makes it even more special.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“A win puts me in the mix with a lot of good fighters. I don’t want to say anyone’s name just yet, but I have nearly 30 wins with no losses and am in one of the most stacked divisions in all of boxing, the welterweight division. I need to look like I belong on television and look like I am a main event fighter. If I look the part and perform how I should, I know my promoters will do their job and get me in with one of the best fighters in the world, but right now I must do my job on Friday.”

The undercard — also streaming live and exclusively on ESPN+ — will feature middleweight prospect Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (4-0, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder, undefeated 2016 Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (13-0, 12 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight, and an eight-round junior lightweight battle between rising Puerto Rican prospect Henry “Moncho” Lebron (13-0, 9 KOs) and noted spoiler Manuel Rey Rojas (21-5, 6 KOs).

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets starting at $55 go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased by visiting AXS.com.

“Emanuel Navarrete never disappoints, as he’s a true Mexican warrior who fights in a crowd-pleasing style,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Joet Gonzalez earned his position as the mandatory challenger, and he has everything it takes to give Navarrete a formidable challenge. I am also thrilled that Giovani Santillan will get an opportunity to fight in front of the hometown fans in an excellent fight against Angel Ruiz.”

Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs) is 8-0 with six knockouts in world title fights, a busy championship run that began in December 2018 with his dominant decision over Isaac Dogboe to win the WBO junior featherweight world title. Following five title defenses in nine months, Navarrete moved up to featherweight and bested Ruben Villa by unanimous decision last October to win the WBO world title. He defended that title in April and knocked out Christopher Diaz in the 12th round. Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs) fell short in his first world title opportunity in October 2019, losing a decision to pound-for-pound star Shakur Stevenson. He returned last September and handed a one-sided beating to three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga to earn his WBO No. 1 ranking.

“I am focused on winning this fight and defending my world title for the second time. I know that Joet Gonzalez is a good fighter. I respect him and he is also my mandatory challenger, but I am the champion, and I will show him why. This belt isn’t going anywhere,” Navarrete said. “I hope that my Mexican fans will support me in San Diego, and my fans from Tijuana can also come to the fight. I will give them a great fight, and it will be a great victory for all my Mexican people.”

Gonzalez said, “I am excited and thankful to receive a second world title opportunity, this time against a great Mexican warrior like Navarrete. I know I have what it takes to become a world champion, and I will show the world that on Oct. 15. No disrespect to Navarrete, but this is my time.”

Santillan (27-0, 15 KOs), born and raised in San Diego, first picked up a pair of gloves at 8 years old and fought nearly 80 amateur bouts before turning pro in 2012 in Temecula, California. Santillan rose the ranks fighting mostly in Southern California, but he’s made only one pro appearance in his hometown, a 2014 TKO over Osenohan Vazquez. In June 2020, he survived a razor-thin majority decision against former lightweight world champion Antonio DeMarco. After a year-long layoff, he returned June 26 with a one-sided decision over Cecil McCalla. Ruiz (17-1, 12 KOs), a six-year pro, won the first 16 fights of his career before suffering a shocking second-round knockout loss to Javier Flores in October 2019. He came back in April 2021 and bullied the previously unbeaten Bobirzhan Mominov en route to an eight-round decision on a nationally televised card.

“As soon as I got the call, I was excited because this is something my dad and I talked about for a long time, being part of a big show in San Diego,” Santillan said. “Ruiz is a good fighter, a hungry guy, but I’m hungry as well. We actually sparred a few years back and did some rounds. It was good work. I can’t wait for Oct. 15. I’m going to perform for my family, my friends, and my city. This is an incredible opportunity.”

Lebron (13-0, 9 KOs), a southpaw who won Puerto Rican amateur national titles in 2015 and 2016 before turning pro, is coming off last August’s near-shutout decision over veteran Luis Porozo. One of his island nation’s most promising prospects, the 23-year-old has six knockouts in two rounds or less. Rojas (21-5, 6 KOs) has only been knocked out once as a pro and most recently won a one-sided decision over Tyler McCreary in June on a Top Rank card.

FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE FIGHT BETWEEN JELENA MRDJENOVICH AND ERIKA CRUZ HERNANDEZ TO HEADLINE THURSDAY NIGHT’S RING CITY USA EVENT ON NBC SPORTS NETWORK

Los Angeles – April 19, 2021 – On Thursday night, Ring City USA will return with another high-stakes world title main event when Jelena Mrdjenovich makes the sixth defense of her WBA Featherweight World Title against Erika Cruz Hernandez, live from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and on NBC Sports Network. The main card on NBCSN will feature two additional bouts beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, with a three-fight undercard beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT around the world on Twitch.

The previously announced main event heavyweight clash between undefeated contenders Jermaine Franklin (20-0, 13 KOs) and Stephan Shaw (14-0, 10 KOs) was postponed due to Franklin testing positive for COVID-19.

Mrdjenovich (41-10-2, 19 KOs) returns to the Ring City USA squared circle following her fifth world title defense, a 10-round unanimous decision victory against Iranda Paolo Torres on December 17, 2020 at the Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, Calif. The three-division world champion won the WBA world title in March 2016 defeating champion Edith Matthysse. A pioneer for women’s boxing in her home country of Canada, Mrdjenovich, 38, is currently the second-ranked featherweight in the world by Ring Magazine, behind only recent Ring City victor Amanda Serrano.

The upset-minded Cruz Hernandez (12-1-0, 3 KOs) will be challenging for her first world title. The 30-year-old southpaw is currently riding an 11-bout winning streak including victories over world ranked contenders Vissia Trovato and Jocelyn Morales Torres. As an amateur, the Mexico City native bested 2012 U.S. Olympian Queen Underwood.

Making his United States debut, heavy-handed Juan Pablo Romero (13-0, 9 KOs) arrives for battle following a ten-round unanimous decision over Sergio Torres on November 28, 2020 in Mexico City, Mexico. Prior to his most recent outing, Romero, 31, has faced top competition for a rising prospect and performed well by knocking out four consecutive opponents within the first four rounds.

Romero will face Deiner Berrio (22-2-1, 13 KOs) who returns to the ring following back-to-back knockout wins in his two most recent performances. In his last fight in August 2019, Berrio scored an impressive knockout of Gustavo Sandoval in the second round in his second career bout at 140 pounds. Thursday’s fight against Romero will mark his U.S. debut. Romero was previously scheduled to fight undefeated prospect Jonathan Navarro who was forced to withdraw with an injury.

Now added to the NBC Sports Network telecast, Kazakhstan’s Bobirzhan Mominov (12-0, 8 KOs) will face the most difficult test of his professional career when he takes on Angel Ruiz (16-1, 12 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico in a welterweight fight scheduled for eight rounds. Now fighting out of California, the unbeaten 29-year-old prospect notched two impressive decision wins in 2020 as he continues his ascension to contender status. Standing in his way is the hungry 23-year-old Ruiz, who is trained by Manny Robles out of Southern California and returns to the ring after a nearly 18-month layoff following his first professional loss in 2019.

Bonus undercard action will stream live around the world on Twitch with West Point cadets taking center stage in amateur contests at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

Armed Forces Network Europe and Pacific will also make the broadcast available to U.S. Forces serving overseas on AFN TV.

Javier Flores Stuns Angel Ruiz in Second Round KO Win Friday Night

ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2019) – In the night’s sole upset, Puerto Rico’s Javier Flores (15-2, 13 KOs) downed previously unbeaten welterweight prospect Angel Ruiz (16-1, 12 KOs) with a counter right hand in the second round of the “Path to Glory” main event on Friday night.

Both southpaws started tentative, content with feeling each other out in the opening stanza. Once the second round started, however, Ruiz, 22, began to apply pressure with Flores handling it with ease.

Behind a tight and high guard, Flores, 33, was able to neutralize the Ruiz attack and took advantage of his aggressiveness by timing a right hook across his jaw that dropped him for good at the 2:02 mark.

In the co-feature, lightweight George Acosta (8-1, 1 KO) ran the table on the overmatched Roberto Almazan (9-13, 4 KOs). Acosta, who had a sizeable contingent of fans in attendance, out boxed and out maneuvered Almazan throughout the six-round fight.

He cautiously landed combinations and defended well, often frustrating Almazan into throwing wild shots. Scores 60-54 all around.

In his U.S. debut, junior welterweight prospect Alec Zavala (4-0, 3 KOs) knocked out Carlos Apodaca (3-14-2, 1 KO) at the 1:02 mark of the opening round. Zavala, who is from California’s Inland Empire region east of Los Angeles, landed a left to the midsection that crippled Apodaca.

Zavala, 23, is an intriguing talent with a solid combination of size, strength and speed. He appeared measured and calm in seeking the knockout win – rare traits for fighters that young.

Super bantamweight Ivan Zarate (1-0) was successful in his professional debut, earning a unanimous decision win against Neri Garcia (1-9). Zarate landed a thundering right hand in the first round that put Garcia on his back. Garcia would rally and make it a close fight, but the first round knockdown proved too much to overcome. Scores 38-37 all around.

The “Path to Glory” show opener between lightweights Golden Garcia (11-0-2, 6 KOs) and Hector Garcia (14-7-3, 8 KOs) ended in a draw with all three judges scoring it 57-57.

Both fighters loaded up on power shots throughout the six-round fight and each had their moments. Toward the end of the second round, Hector staggered Golden with consecutive body shots but was unable to close, as the bell saved Golden from further trouble.

The fourth round belonged to Golden, with the Canadian connecting frequently on two-punch combinations. In the end, neither fighter could build enough momentum to steal a close win.

All fights were streamed live on TB Presents: Path to Glory.

Top Prospect Angel Ruiz Steps Into Another Main Event Attraction this Friday, Oct. 18

ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2019) – Welterweight prospect Angel Ruiz (16-0, 12 KOs), fresh off a first round knockout win in his main event debut from June, steps back into the main event attraction this Friday, Oct. 18, in Thompson Boxing’s “Path to Glory” show from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Ruiz, 22, faces fellow southpaw Javier Flores (14-2, 12 KOs) in the 8-round showcase fight. The Mexican-born Ruiz, who now lives in Los Angeles and trains out of the Maywood Boxing Gym, has recently began to gain exposure in the American market after breaking out from the Tijuana boxing scene.

Five out of his last six fights have taken place from the greater Los Angeles area. He rides a five-fight knockout win streak into his scrap with Flores, who is perhaps the toughest test of his young career.

“It’s a big fight for me,” remarked Ruiz. “I know a lot of people are interested in seeing what I can do against a tough opponent and I’m ready to show everyone that I have what it takes to get to the top.”

Ruiz shinned in his last fight by dispatching quality veteran Miguel Zamudio in the first round.

In that fight, he tagged Zamudio with a left hand from his southpaw stance. He quickly followed up with a bevy of punches that overwhelmed Zamudio.

“I did what I came here to do,” said Ruiz after the fight. “I’m just happy I was able to finish this early and give the fans something to talk about.”

Ruiz came out fast as lightening, as his nickname, “Relampago,” suggests.

“He looked really sharp and in command right from the start,” said Doug Fischer, TB Presents livestream color commentator. “I wanted to see more of him, but that’s what happens when you end a fight early.”

Tickets for “Path to Glory” are priced at $40, $60 and $100 and are available for purchase at ThompsonBoxing.com, or by calling 714-935-0900.

All fights will be streamed live on TB Presents: Path to Glory via our Facebook page, YouTube channel and ThompsonBoxing.com. Beto Duran will handle blow-by-blow duties, while Doug Fischer provides expert, color commentary.

Promising Welterweight Angel Ruiz Makes Headlining Debut This Friday

ORANGE, Calif. (June 10, 2019) – Unbeaten welterweight prospect Angel Ruiz (13-0, 10 KOs), who has won his last four contests by knockout, makes his headlining debut this Friday on “Path to Glory” against veteran Miguel Zamudio (43-12-1, 27 KOs).

The 8-round main event originates from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

For the first time in his career, Ruiz, 21, faces a quality veteran that may pose problems for the young southpaw.

“You never know what to expect when you get matched with someone that has a lot more experience than you,” said Ruiz, who was born in Mexico, but now lives in Los Angeles. “The good news for me is that I sparred with a lot of quality guys for this fight. Zamudio is a tough guy, but I know I’m better.”

Despite his mileage, Zamudio is still only 28-years-old and fought Javier Fortuna for a featherweight title when he was just 22. Ruiz, who has a fan friendly style, plans to pressure him early to avoid getting sucked into any traps.

“I’ll probably start working off my jab so I can get a sense of his movement,” said Ruiz, who will be making his third straight appearance on a Thompson Boxing show on Friday. “The goal is to create space for the left hand. I know the fans would like to see a knockout so I’m going to try to give them one.”

Tickets for “Path to Glory” are priced at $40, $60, & $100 and are available for purchase at ThompsonBoxing.com, or by calling 714-935-0900.

In the co-feature, junior middleweight Richard Brewart (5-0, 2 KOs) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. faces fellow prospect Antonio Duarte (2-0) of Mexico (6-rounds).

Brewart, 20, turned professional last year and will be making his third appearance for 2019. Despite his young age, the 20-year-old displays an advanced skill set usually seen in prospects that are farther along.

“I’m just a gym rat,” said Brewart, who is trained by Henry Ramirez. “I’m always in the gym working out and trying to get better. It’s great to see the results that come from hard work.”

UNDERCARD

Hard-charging bantamweight Mario Hernandez (8-1-1, 3 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. faces Mexico’s Nester Ramos (7-9-1, 3 KOs) in a fight scheduled for 6-rounds.

Junior lightweight Jose Correa (7-3, 4 KOs) of Santa Ana faces Alex Solorio (4-5, 1 KO) of Mexico in a 6-round bout.

Opening “Path to Glory” is featherweight Tito Sanchez (2-0, 2 KOs) of Indio, Calif. Sanchez will face an opponent to be named later (4-rounds).
