MIGUEL COTTO

“We had been in talks with ProBox for a couple of months. They are people that know boxing and without hesitation we decided to become a part of this new platform.  They know what they’re doing and have a very solid platform for boxing and we’re expecting a great collaboration. It gives us the platform to be able to do boxing as well as serving as a workshop to be able to do right by the boxers that are signed to the promotion. We will also begin to recruit boxers and make alliance with them as we start to work together.

“This is not only going to be a platform based in Puerto Rico but will also have the opportunity to bring it into Mexico with Juan Manuel Marquez and workshops there to develop boxers. We plan to bring fighters from other Latin countries, such as the Dominican to Puerto Rico to join our company.

“I am very excited about project and eagerly awaiting the start and hoping that the fans join in on the excitement as well.“

On being together with Juan Manuel Marquez: ‘It’s great every time we see each other and we enjoy the company. Juan Manuel has his life in Orlando where he lives and I have my life over here in Puerto Rico but every time that we have come together it has been great as we share the common ground of Boxing.”

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ

“We are here to show our support for not just one event but many events we’re going be having here in Puerto Rico and to be working with great colleagues such as Paulie Malignaggi , Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones Jr. And especially now with Miguel Cotto and Cotto Promotions. That we have come together to support the sport of boxing and the fighters who are the ones that leave everything in the ring.

We are here in Puerto Rico to support boxing.  We will be counseling the up-and-coming youth and we’re going work hard for the true lovers of the sport, which I believe there is a lot of here in Puerto Rico. I am amazed how in Puerto Rico and in Mexico love the sport of boxing. In Mexico we know that soccer is the preferred sport but now I believe that boxing he’s taking over.

ProBox TV is going to go out there and support all the fighters and support Boxing and above all we’re going to bring quality boxing to all the fans. In this case, in Puerto Rico, for 19 August we are going to work with Miguel Cotto and I am just filled with happiness, and eager to be present and do these great works for the sport of Boxing.”

The promotion’s first ever series, the iconic Ramada Rumble, featured many boxing legends over its twelve year run – boxing icons such as James Toney, Angel Manfredy and others, and once featured the World Title eliminator bout between Antonio Tarver and Reggie Johnson that set the stage for Tarver’s upset win over Roy Jones Jr.

“This event is made possible by the support of the Mayor of Rosemont, Bradley Stephens, and his tremendous staff,” said Bobby Hitz. “They have been instrumental in bringing us back to Rosemont.”

The Rosemont Rumble will feature a new generation of Chicago talent. The card includes an appearance from undefeated Notre Dame grad, and current USBA Light Heavyweight Champion, Mike Lee (19-0, 10KO). Don “Da Bomb” George (25-7-2, 22KO) makes his return, and rounding out the event is a rematch of last year’s clash between Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez vs. Aaron Pryor, Jr. The remaining undercard bouts will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Rosemont has always been a special place for Hitz Boxing,” said Hall of Fame Promoter Bobby Hitz. “I had my first card there, and had a great run with the Ramada Rumble. We’re coming home, bringing the first fights ever to The Dome, and putting together fights with some really special local guys. We’re excited to team up with Round 3 Productions, Mike Lee’s team and CBS Sports. It’s going to be a big night for Chicago area boxing.”

Undefeated prospect Antonio Tarver, Jr. establishing his own identity in ring

TAMPA (May 10, 2016) – Fighting for his young family, as well as to expand the legacy associated with his last name, the son of 5-time world champion and 1996 U.S. Olympian Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver – unbeaten junior middleweight prospect Antonio Tarver, Jr. – this past weekend continued establishing his own identity in the ring.

After a 9-month absence, the 28-year-old Tarver (4-0, 3 KOs) returned to the ring in Lakeland, Florida, stopping Jose Cortez in the second round. Tarver displayed his improving skills, especially a punishing body attack, during a thoroughly dominating performance. He broke-down Cortez and closed the show in style.

“It took me one round to get rid of ring rust,” he explained. “We had a game-plan to go to the body, then the head, body and head, but it took me a round to do it. God’s really blessed me and I owe all thanks to Him. My father and coach, Jimmy Williams, have always told me not to look for a knockout but that it’ll come. I’m not a one-punch knockout fighter. It’s all about setting up shots and putting them together. I may not connect with every single body shot I throw, but if I get in three of four each round, it’ll eventually cause damage. I’m focusing on my opponent’s liver and ribs, trying to be a body-snatcher.”

Tarver was an athlete, playing basketball and football, who didn’t start boxing until he was 19. He had a very brief amateur career and fully realizes that he’s consistently going to be fighting more experienced boxers.

“In the ring,” Tarver said, “I’m still a baby. My opponents may be much more experienced than me, but I do have a lot of experience around me: my father, coach Williams and Darrell Foreman. My father wouldn’t support me as a fighter until I proved to him that I was worthy (sacrificing and training). I’m worthy now and believe I’m coming into my own as I continue to learn.”

“As a father,” Tarver Sr., noted, “I wanted him to know what he was getting into and have the tools to succeed. He’s as tough as nails. When he realizes how strong he really is…..look out. There’s a difference between hitting an opponent with a punch and punching through him like he’s doing now. I just wish he’d get started quicker. He doesn’t get going until he gets hit and then he turns into a beast. A ferociousness comes out from inside that I never had. He’s improving all of the time. He’s putting punches together better and sitting down on his punches.

“Antonio is going to be a fan-friendly fighter. I know I put him under a lot of pressure, but he’s fighting much more experienced guys. I’ve never been worried about him fighting a tough guy. It’s the guys who think in the ring and have amateur pedigree that can be problems for him.”

Understanding that his opponents get pumped to fight him because of his last name, Antonio Jr. rationalizes that, taking advantage of the situation he is in. “It’s very important for my opponents to beat me and the name,” he admitted. “My father set this stage for me and my name is, Antonio Tarver, Jr., so they’re trying to give us both a loss. I’m fighting for my family and to protect the legacy of my last name. I try and take advantage of being my father’s son and accept everything that goes with that. I don’t try to put pressure on myself but, of course, I want to be the best Antonio Tarver Jr. I can be.

“People are always going to compare me with my father but we fight in different weight classes. Light heavyweights, other than Roy Jones Jr., are slower than junior middleweights, who are much quicker like Floyd Mayweather, Jr. I’m always going to be fighting opponents taller than me, or sometimes the same height, but I’m 5′ 9″ and a lot of my opponents are going to be 6′ 2” or so.

The father has another important lesson he’s teaching his son. “Antonio became a father for the first time last September and he was slow getting back in the gym,” Antonio Sr. added. “He has to learn how to balance fatherhood with his pro boxing career, making sacrifices to become a champion!”

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT RE-SIGNS SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT LUIS ROSA TO LONG-TERM DEAL

New York, NY (8/12/15) – This Friday night, undefeated super bantamweight contender Luis Rosa (20-0, 10KO’s) will look to provide some early fireworks when he squares off against Mexico’s Giovanni Caro (24-16-4, 19KO’s) on the undercard of PBC on Spike’s eagerly anticipated event at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The card, headlined by former light heavyweight champion, and now heavyweight contender Antonio Tarver (31-6, 22KO’s) taking on fellow contender Steve Cunningham (28-7, 13KO’s), is set to kick off at 6 p.m. ET. Live coverage on Spike begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT with the American debut of cruiserweight kingpin Marco Huck (38-2-1, 26KO’s) squaring off against undefeated Polish contender Krzysztof Glowacki (24-0, 15KO’s).

The 24-year-old Rosa is one of the truly bright young stars on the loaded DiBella Entertainment (DBE) roster. Having turned pro at just 18 years of age, Rosa, who initially signed with DBE in 2010, has re-signed a long-term agreem

ent with promoter Lou DiBella, as he looks to become the next homegrown world champion to emerge from the DBE roster.

“I am glad to have re-signed with Lou (DiBella) and continue my career under the DBE banner. I am ready to put on a great show on Friday night. I have had another great camp and am in tremendous shape for this fight. I am excited and ready for another victory come Friday night. I want to thank God for the talent he has given me, and my team, and Lou for this opportunity,” said Rosa.

“Team Rosa is grateful, excited and dedicated to a successful relationship with DiBella Entertainment. We know re-signing was a great choice and we are confident that our future and venture together will be a victorious one. To God all the glory,” said mother and manager Marilyn Rosa.

“Luis Rosa has already proven that he is a serious contender in the junior featherweight division,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “I am very pleased to continue with our relationship. I expect big things from Rosa in the near future and I believe he is a future world champion.”

Already ranked number 15 in the WBC world ratings, Rosa has really come into his own over the past two years, which saw him gain massive exposure with three very impressive performances on national TV. In January of 2014, Rosa made his ESPN Friday Night Fights debut with a dominant and entertaining eight-round unanimous decision over contender Jorge Diaz. Rosa followed up that performance five months later in May with his most impressive victory to date, a 10-round unanimous decision against fellow highly regarded contender and former amateur standout Luis Orlando Del Valle. Rosa is coming off a fifth-round TKO victory, also on Friday Night Fights, over longtime contender Jonathan Perez in May of this year. Rosa knows that a world title opportunity is not too far off, but to continue in that direction, he must take care of business on Friday night against the heavy-handed Caro. The bout between Rosa and Caro is scheduled for eight rounds and will be one of the featured undercard bouts of the evening.

Antonio Tarver looking through Steve Cunningham on historic run

antonio_tarver1
MIAMI (August 4, 2015) – Five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) will be looking through – not past – former two-time IBF champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) on Friday night, Aug. 14, in their 12-round heavyweight showdown at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

WBA #9 Tarver vs. IBF #6/WBC #14 Cunningham is the main event on a Premier Boxing Champions series show airing live on Spike TV, the same network Tarver serves as its boxing color commentator.

Tarver is on a mission to become the oldest heavyweight champion of the world in boxing history. The 46-year-old southpaw realizes he has to get past Cunningham in order to get a world title shot against Wladimir Klitschko or Deontay Wilder.

“I respect Steve Cunningham,” Tarver explained. “I’m not looking past him, I’m looking through him. If I have to go through Wilder to get Klitschko, so be it. I’m getting that world heavyweight title and when I defeat Klitschko it’ll be the biggest story in sports. But I know that I won’t get my title shot unless I get by Cunningham.

“The ‘Magic Man’ is bringing 1000 tricks in his bag but it’s only going to take one to take him out. I’ve been working hard in training camp and he hasn’t been focused. Steve is a solid durable opponent who has proven himself in the heavyweight division, coming off a close eliminator that many thought he won. I have the test of fighting a guy who you can’t make quit, so you have to knock him out because he’s proven his heart and guts. Steve’s also motivated because he knows what beating me can do for his career.”

At 46 and a grandfather-to-be next month, Tarver realizes that he may not be the same fighter he was during a nine-fight stretch between 2002-2006, in which he was one of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters, shocking Roy Jones, Jr. (see picture to the right) in two of three fights, splitting a pair with Glen Johnson, defeating Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and losing to Bernard Hopkins. Tarver, however, feels that his aforementioned experiences and overcoming so many struggles will be enough to take him back to the top of the boxing mountain.

“I learned the fundamentals of boxing and that’s why I’m still here at 46,” Tarver noted. “My whole game is built on deception because, by the looks of it, I’m not supposed to be as fast, as quick and strong, as tough, or hit as hard as I do. So, that makes it hard to prepare for the fighter like me. I am sure Cunningham may have prepared for a physical war but has he prepare for the mental part of our fight? He’ll be fighting in a ring full of mine fields, one wrong step and, Kaboom!”
Tarver and his head trainer, Orlando Cuellar, have been together a full year for what amounts to three training camps considering Tarver’s originally scheduled fight against Jonathan Banks was postponed several months due to Tarver’s broken hand, followed by his impressive seventh-round stoppage of Banks last December in his last fight.

“We know each other much better now in terms of how much to push him in camp and what to expect from each other,” Cuellar commented. “He may be 46 but he’s never been beat up. His ring savvy is off the charts and he’s knowledgeable. Antonio’s a sharp puncher and vicious competitor. He does exactly what I ask of him in the gym. I’ve come to realize that he doesn’t need 160-200 rounds of sparring for a fight. He remembers everything from his fights against so many great fighters, storing information in his mind to use in his fight. He outthinks his opponent. I watched him set things up and put it all together. Antonio is a special fighter, super intelligent, a breeze to work with and most capable in the ring. I’m blessed to be working with him.

“Cunningham is going to come in and apply pressure, but he’s never fought anybody as elusive and intelligent as Antonio, who can catch or slip, block or counter. He has so many tricks up his sleeve. Antonio is going to fight to his speed. Just when Cunningham thinks he has Antonio where he wants him, it’s going to be too late and Antonio is going to knockout Cunningham. Tarver is a much sharper puncher than people think. Like Antonio says, we’re not looking past Cunningham, we’re looking through him.”

PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS ON SPIKE MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

antonio_tarver1
Kelly Swanson
Thanks everybody for calling in. We’re excited today to be on the phone talking about a really excellent show headlined by Antonio Tarver versus Steve Cunningham also featuring the bout between Marco Huck and Krzysztof Glowacki. We are going to start with Huck and Glowacki.

This bout is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Warriors Boxing and Huck Sports Promotions. I’m going to turn this call over to Lou DiBella to make the official introductions for the call.

Lou DiBella
Thank you Kelly. I’m thrilled to be promoting this terrific event at Prudential Center for another PBC on Spike show. The PBC on Spike shows have been terrific so far. It’s a pleasure to be working with the Prudential Center. Sean Saadeh the Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Programming and his entire staff of the Prudential Center have been a pleasure to work with so far. This is the first major event I’ve ever worked with them on and it’s been great so far.

Once again great to be working with Spike their Senior Vice-President of Sports and Multi-Platform Programming is Jon Slusser. Their whole staff is great I’ve been very impressed with what Spike has done and with their on-air team I think is one of the best young energetic broadcast teams in boxing right now. Interestingly Antonio Tarver is part of that broadcast and he will be competing in the main event in a heavyweight bout against Steve “U.S.S.” Cunningham in a bout that I think is going to be terrific for fans and a must win fight for both guys.

But before we get into the main event, tickets for event are priced at $150, $100, $70 and $45 not including service charges. They’re available at Ticketmaster.com or charged by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or at any Ticketmaster outlet. They can also be purchased Prudential Center’s box office. The Spike telecast and PBC off site telecast will begin at 9 pm both Eastern Time and Pacific Time.

The opening bout is the terrific world championship cruiserweight battle between Marco “Captain” Huck who is 38-2-1 with 26 KOs who’s defending his supremacy of the cruiserweight division who’s not only is he a champion but really at the moment he is the dominant cruiserweight in the world against Krzysztof Glowacki who is 24-0 with 15 KOs. This is the US debut for Glowacki and also for Huck. I think this is a really great bout for boxing fans. Huck is really the king of the cruiserweights right now.

He’s also campaigned at heavyweight where he’s been able to compete effectively and he’s got his hands full with an undefeated opponent. For both Krzysztof and Marco this is their first fight on US soil and is the first opportunity to be televised in front of a huge audience on a prime time American television.

I’d like to ask the first question of both of them and I’ll start with Krzysztof, how have you prepared for this opportunity and what does it mean for you to make this first major fight on US soil and tell us a little bit more about your feelings about fighting in America for the first time. Krzysztof first.

Krzysztof Glowacki
I am very happy to fight in the United States. I’m very thankful to my promoters who gave me the chance to do it but I also did it myself winning elimination fights. I just hope that on August 14 I’m going to win. I’m going to bring the title back to Poland and Poland will have the new World Champion. I am very motivated for this fight I trained a long time. There are no injuries I am completing healthy so a great motivation before August 14.

Marco Huck
I’m very happy this is my first time in America boxing. I’m very much looking forward to the fight in America. It’s always been one of my biggest ambitions and career goals to fight over here and I’ve achieved pretty much everything that is in Europe. I also fought some Americans before and now I want to come over here to show the American people my skills over here and I’m just really looking forward and I’m excited for August 14.

L. DiBella
Thank you so much and I think this is great for boxing fans we get to see a fighter with quality of Marco Huck on PBC on Spike. Krzysztof is an undefeated hungry guy looking to bring the belt back to Poland. So I have a special thanks to Krzysztof’s promoters Warriors Boxing and my friend Leon Margules and to all the people who are with Huck’s promotional company.

I’m going to open it up for a couple of questions for each guy. We’re going to limit it to just to a couple of questions for each of these guys before we get on to the main event. So if you could please open it up for questions from the press.

Q
Marco you’re coming in probably better known but again as is said this is your first fight in the United States you’re fighting a younger undefeated guy who is a southpaw. Tell us what you think your advantages are in this fight?

M. Huck
My biggest advantage of all is I am Marco Huck. I have 13 title defenses against all the big names. I show them all what I am all about. He hasn’t really got that much experience I hear that he’s been talking himself up a bit lately. But a lot of people have done that before him and I will show him what the real deal actually is.

Q
Okay and question for Krzysztof similarly. This is in my opinion a step up for you fighting a championship fighter more experienced as he said. Tell us what you think your advantages are in this fight?

K. Glowacki
Marco just said that he basically has won everything, I think this is my strength because he’s got everything he wanted and I’m a more hungry a guy, a guy with bigger motivation versus the fighter who is basically achieved the maximum what he could achieve. So motivation and being hungry and hungrier will be a number one.

Q
Marco, I just wanted to know how long has it been in plan to come to the United States and why he felt now was the right time to make that happen?

M. Huck
I have been wanting to fight in the US for over ten years to be honest the problem was that I didn’t really have anyone by my side who could help me to achieve this dream. But now I found Lou DiBella whose experience is great and who can help me over here and help me with something that my former promoters weren’t able to do. I said already that I achieved everything in my career so far and now I get to achieve my debut in the US and I’m looking forward to this fight and for a long run over here in the United States.

Q
Is there any concern about having not fought in nearly a year?

M. Huck
There are no concerns whatsoever. I just started sparring and I actually was a bit surprised myself how good it was going and how my sparring partner was sent flying to the floor. I’m just really looking forward to getting back into the ring. I’m so motivated my motivation is bigger than ever before even in my previous fights even when I wasn’t that motivated I was still able to do what I have to do. I’m just looking forward to coming over here and do what I can do best. I really want to present myself to the American audience and I am convinced that I will have a popular style.

Q
Krzysztof is there any opponent that you feel has helped prepare you for this fight?

K. Glowacki
There’s only one Marco Huck so I did not fight anybody who is close to the style and the problems that Marco brings to the ring. But I fought very good fighters. Every fighter I fought was there and this is kind of verification for me if I am the guy to be our next World Champion and I hope I am and this is the time.

Q
Marco you fought Alexander Povetkin arguably the top two or three heavyweights in the world and it was a draw. A lot of people think you beat him. How long are you going to be staying a cruiserweight?

M. Huck
Everybody knows that I actually won the fight against Povetkin. Povetkin himself actually came to me after the fight and told me that he never wants to see me again. My ambition has always been to fight the best and also to fight the best in the heavyweight division. Looking at the division right now and just the fight of Wilder against Molina was actually embarrassing to be honest. But yes I want to go back to the heavyweight division in the future and take over there as I did in the cruiserweight division.

L. DiBella
Well thank you very much. Thanks very much gentlemen. One thing that I want to make clear by both fighters on this call, there is only one Marco Huck. He’s the dominant cruiserweight in the world he’s the guy that has the ability to challenge for a heavyweight championship and he’s going to be tested at the Prudential Center on PBC on Spike on August 14. I thank you both for joining us and look forward to seeing you in the states in the next few weeks. So thank you Marco thank you Krzysztof.

Our main event of the evening features two guys who are really well known to boxing fans Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver is 31-6 with 22 KOs and has worn a number of belts is now trying to fight his way to a shot at the heavyweight world championship and he has a very big obstacle in his way in Steve “U.S.S.” Cunningham. Steve’s record is 28-6 with 13 KOs but it’s a deceptive record because many of those seven losses should have gone the other way in my view.

Steve is a guy who’s one of the highest character people in all of boxing one of the most well respected by his peers by the press by the media by the fans because of the type of guy he is. He’s a family man, he’s a man of faith and he’s a guy that lays it all out in the ring. He’s never been in a bad fight and he’s never given anything but 110% and I’m proud to be able to promote a fight featuring Steve Cunningham. They will headline the evening in a 12-round heavyweight battle.

This is a match that both fighters must win. This is a must win fight if they’re going to continue at the highest levels of the heavyweight division Antonio and Steve don’t have a margin for error here. The winner will move on to a huge opportunity and the loser of this bout it’s a huge step back and maybe really the end of the line. So this is the kind of fight that figures to be a terrific match up and a must win fight that’s a recipe for a great fight.

Steve Cunningham
Thanks for having me, it’s a pleasure and honor to be here I’m working hard and going at it.

L. DiBella
Antonio Tarver is one of the biggest names in boxing for a long time. Antonio and I got to spend some time together because of the Rocky Balboa movie. He’s an actor and he’s a commentator for Spike now and one of the best in my view actually up and coming on air guys in boxing. Antonio I know you’re looking forward to this opportunity and you want that shot at a heavyweight title but you got to get through Mr. Cunningham. What do you have to say about that?

Antonio Tarver
Well it’s just like any fight I’ve had over the years. All of my fights have been huge fights. I can tell you I feel good going in. I’ve done the work. I haven’t underestimated Steve Cunningham at all. I have a great deal of respect for the man. His story with his daughter is really outstanding. But unfortunately we in the hurt business and this is boxing at the highest level and it’s all about opportunities.

There’s no fighter out there that has struggled and overcame like I have and it’s those struggles that are going to carry me through this fight and beyond. I hear his story and it’s heartfelt but the last three years of my life can’t nobody even comprehend. That’s what champions are made of. I truly believe God gives his toughest test to his strongest warriors and I’ve been tested and I’ve proven that I can go through and I can endure.

So this fight is going to be about who wants it most and that’s the bottom line because we both know how to pull our hands that’s not a doubt. But it’s going to come down to who want it most. He has a good distance, he’s long, he’s rangy and got good movement. He’s an active fighter. But at the same time, the boxing match within this boxing match is going to be a fight.

When the fight slows down, I’m going to be right there. I’m not going anywhere. He’s going to have to knock me out to take this victory from me. That’s the only way I’m going out there.

That’s the only way I’m losing is if I get knocked out because I’m in great shape. I’m ready to go. I know what this fight means to me, and the time is now.

I wanted a big name guy so that I could really put my skill on display. Steve Cunningham gives me the opportunity. I know he wants this fight bad; we both do. There can only be one winner.

I’m bringing it August 14. I’m ready to go. my sparring is going well, my training camp is going well. I have a great trainer in Orlando Cuellar who’s on the line as we speak.

So we’re just ready for August 14, and we’re going to set the Prudential Center on fire. We know we’ve got some foreigners that are going to be coming over and they may bring a lot of fans. But we’re going to bring the show. Don’t miss the Magic Show on August 14.

Q
Antonio, there are a lot of rumors that you’re looking past Mr. Cunningham and to the next big fight. Can you please shed some light on that?

A. Tarver
No man, I’m not, I’m a veteran. I’ve been around the game forever and a day. I’m not ever going to be that naïve to look past a credible fighter like Steve Cunningham. That would be dumb of me.

I’m not looking past him, but I’m a realist. I can see the future too. I’m a realist. I know what this fight means. I’m not looking past him. But I am looking through him. Straight through him. He’s transparent. I’m looking straight through Steve Cunningham; yes. I’m not looking past him but I’m looking through him.

Q
Any predictions for this fight at all champ?

A. Tarver
You’re going to see a well-conditioned Magic Man doing what he do best and that’s winning. That’s it. I mean I’m not going to have no predictions. I mean I know I’ve got my hands full. I’m going to have to bite down on that mouthpiece. I’m going to have to pull that cup up and I’ve going to have to dig to get Steve Cunningham out of there, man.

I’m ready for that. I’m preparing for that war, a battle of attrition; it’s going to be a hell of a fight.

I predict that this fight can be a candidate for fight of the year because I know what it’s going to have to take for me to get this victory. It’s going to have to take the old Magic Man. I’m going to have to show you glimpses of the old Magic Man with the things that I’m able to do in the right.

If it comes down to making adjustments, I’m going to be able to make those adjustments. If it comes down to getting inside and letting them rip, I’m going to be able to do that. If it comes down to making him miss and making him pay, I’m going to be able to do that.

I just believe in my skill and my ability man, even at the late age of 46. It’s just a blessing from God that I’m even still able to do it.

So I’m walking through my destiny knowing that it’s not an accident that I’m here today. It’s not an accident that I had to go through what I had to go through to get here.

This is a purpose and its destiny for me. Nothing is going to stop me. That’s bottom line. I can’t wait to see this shit unfold.

I’m ready you and excited that I’m back on national network TV; that I’m back at the top of the game and everybody is going to be able to see for themselves. After August 14 there won’t be no more doubt about what I can do and my capability at 46.

My skills haven’t eroded. My timing hasn’t eroded. My speed hasn’t eroded. I’m still here and that’s what I want to show the world on August 14, that they slept on the wrong man; period.

Q
A lot of people have you as the underdog in this fight, and want to see a Tarver-Deontay Wilder fight? Can you stop all that from happening?

S. Cunningham
I’ve been getting counted out since I started challenging for a world title. I’ve been traveling to Europe fighting in Poland where nobody wants to go. Fighting in Germany, successfully defending my title numerous times, where nobody wants to go. South Africa, where nobody wants to go. I could care less about what anybody says. When I fought Marco Huck I was the five to one underdog and they threw the towel in on him in the last round. So I can care less about what anyone says. I’ve got to question myself to Antonio Tarver. He’s speaking about his respect for me and there is respect for fighters regardless before and after the fight.

But a lot of people who know fighters, they know that at a certain point in training camp a fighter is agitated, he’s ready to fight, and it’s time to fight. I’ve been at that point, so I’m ready to fight right now.

He’s trying to compare life woes. My daughter’s struggle and the struggle he said he went through in the past three years. Look dude, you can keep all the woes. You can take my daughter’s woes. You can take your woes. I don’t want them. Nobody wants those woes. We can’t compare that. I’m not into comparing life woes.

Now you say your life was hard in the past three years and nobody could understand; nobody could fathom. Have you been driving that Bentley you bought after the Green fight?

You’ve been driving in a Bentley. You understand what I’m saying. Have you made over $500,000 in the last three years? I haven’t. I don’t have a Bentley and beating you is going to get me that; you understand.

So don’t try to compare nothing that you’ve been through that will not stand up to a damn thing Steve Cunningham has been through in his whole career.

A. Tarver
With all due respect, I think you kind of misinterpreted what I was saying. I know we both got struggles and I respect that. And no, my struggles may not be personal like yours, family oriented, and I respect that too.

But what I’m saying that the struggle that I had to overcome to get back to where I’m at right now today. After I got suspended, I can just talk all day about it. Losing my job; losing the opportunity to commentate in the Olympics; that meant a lot to me.

S. Cunningham
But listen, we can go all day. We could trade back and forth all day like baseball cards. You had troubles; I had troubles.

A. Tarver
No income. I didn’t make no income.

S. Cunningham
We’re going to get in the ring and match skills. I don’t want to hear about your woes. I’m actually sick about talking about my daughter’s situation because it’s out there.

A. Tarver
But look dude, I’m just giving – I’m giving you the utmost respect on that because I’d understand if it was my daughter, I understand that’s out of our control.

S. Cunningham
Well this is another question I have for you then. Where does all this utmost respect come from? A few years ago it was all, who are you. You’re nobody. Come on man, let’s keep it real. No Tarver, let’s keep it real.

A. Tarver
I keep it real.

S. Cunningham
I’m not one of these smart-ass, trash talkers who can run they mouth and get themselves into some money. I fight to get my money, you understand? So you’re that dude who runs his mouth so much. You’re a professional mouth-runner.

Yes you’re a great fighter but then you’re also a professional mouth-runner. I’m a professional fighter, period. You understand? I’m not jumping in the ring on August 14 to beat the hell out of Antonio Tarver. Do you understand?

A. Tarver
Hey, that’s your mission. That’s everybody’s mission. But at the same time, I don’t understand where you’re coming from because I’ve been as quiet as I’ve ever been before a fight. I haven’t really been digging at you about nothing. I’m giving you the utmost respect because I know you’re a warrior. I know you’re coming to win, and I know I’ve got my hands full. That’s why I’m busting my ass in training camp.

If you ask me, I think you’re taking me lightly. You’re overlooking me. How in the hell you going to break camp and go to Vegas and commentate, like you’ve got it easy. You feel me? I wouldn’t break camp for you, but you going to break camp for me? Good luck August 14.

S. Cunningham
If you think me going to commentate for two days is breaking camp…

A. Tarver
You got a problem. You’re out your rabbit ass mind. You going to fly to Vegas and think you going to beat me August 14, you crazy. You out your mind. You distracted.

S. Cunningham
I was ready to fight when they announced it. Do you understand me?

A. Tarver
You don’t know what’s coming at your ass August 14. You playing.

S. Cunningham
Distracted? There’s no such thing as a distraction.

A. Tarver
You playing with it. I ain’t Marco Huck. When I knocked Danny Green out, none of them clowns wanted to fight me. I ain’t Marco Huck.

S. Cunningham
When you start looking like him in the 12th, then think about that.

A. Tarver
Whatever. Hey, enjoy your weekend in Vegas, bro. I’m going to be in camp. Putting on the fine touches – putting on the final touches to this great training camp I’ve had.

S. Cunningham
I’m going to enjoy it. I’m going to drink a beer. Man you going to be putting on final touches for a long time fat boy.

A. Tarver
Go to Vegas.

S. Cunningham
You need to be in camp for seven, eight, nine weeks.

A. Tarver
Ain’t nothing fat about me. Ain’t nothing fat about me, I’m just not a muscular toned guy. I knocked a lot of them out though. I’ve knocked a lot of muscular men out. Them the easiest muscles to box.

S. Cunningham
August 14. That’s it.

A. Tarver
Muscles ain’t never whipped me. I can’t believe you so irate.

S. Cunningham
I’ll see you August 14, my man.

A. Tarver
I ain’t even did nothing psychological. I ain’t even got to play the psychological game. Your mind is already gone. Your mind already blown. Just the thought of August 14, so it’s going to be easy pickings.

S. Cunningham
There’s no way in God’s green earth you could ever, ever attack me psychologically. I’m a war tested as a veteran of this country.

Q
I don’t know if you saw that fight, but tell me what you think at this point today, your advantages are over Steve given he’s proven himself in the heavyweight and other divisions.

A. Tarver
I wouldn’t say any advantage or anything. It’s just going to be two men in there and we’ve got to fight. I stand on my experience. I stand on everything I’ve accomplished in boxing. And I’m saying, whatever goes on in the fight, I’m going to figure it out between the 12 rounds. That’s what I’m saying.

I’m going to figure it out and I’m going to do what I’ve got to do to get the win. That’s all I’m saying. I’ve got the utmost respect for Steve and I keep saying that. Man this is one fight I don’t even have to be mad or even have to have no personal feelings towards nobody. This is just a fight that we’re in. It’s a business.

I’m not taking this personal, but I’ve got my work to do because I’ve got big dreams.

Ain’t nobody going to out-box me, period. The only way you’re going to beat me is to knock me out and that’s it. He got an opportunity to do that. That’s it. We’re going to fight and that’s the bottom line.

I ain’t got to cut no weight. I’m feeling strong. I don’t have the problems I had at light heavyweight. So I’m at my best and bringing it, period.

I’ve got the best defense in the game so, how are you going to hit me? I see it coming a mile away. Come on man.

The bottom line, I’m gone have to close my eyes for this guy to hit me because he ain’t going to be able to hit me with that basic stuff. You ain’t fighting no average fighter, you fighting an exceptional fighter dude.

You ain’t faced nobody like me. I don’t care nothing about all them European you’ve fought. I’m the Magic Man. I’ve got a thousand tricks up my sleeve and you it ain’t gone take but one to get your ass out of there, period.

S. Cunningham
You sound like you’re getting yourself up for the fight right now. Like you’re a hype man.

A. Tarver
I’m keeping it 100 with you Steve. I’m keeping it 100 with you boy.

S. Cunningham
Keep it 100 with me and let’s have this out.

A. Tarver
All the rest of the those guys you fought are basic robotic standup fighters.

Q
Speak on Tarver as you see the more fights that you watch, what the apparent weaknesses of Antonio Tarver?

S. Cunningham
The strength of Antonio Tarver is steroid use. Weakness is his mouth.

A. Tarver
Now that’s the most disrespectful thing. Because someone say you failed the test, that don’t mean nothing. You can go to GNC and get whatever you want. It may not be NFS certified.

But I spent my year. I did my time and that’s it. That’s behind me. That ain’t got nothing to do with right now. You looking for excuses already. Ain’t no steroids in my system bro. I don’t need no steroids. Never have, period.

S. Cunningham
The question was for me, now let me get my time.

A. Tarver
So I just don’t understand why you trying to shoot low. I can get off the phone man. I’ll see you August 14. I ain’t got time to go through this with you.

S. Cunningham
Bye. Bye.

A. Tarver
I ain’t got time to do this with you. Because that stuff you talking is beneath me.

S. Cunningham
I’ll see you in a few weeks, bro. See you.

A. Tarver
Beneath me.

S. Cunningham Bye, hang up.

Q
Tarver, one question for you big man. Now, what’s the strengths and weaknesses of Mr. Cunningham?

A. Tarver
Man his weakness is me. He fighting me. That’s his weakness. He ain’t got no weakness as far as boxing is concerned. He’s a complete fighter. He has the heart, he has the durability; he’s a strong fighter. He’s going to be there to win but he’s fighting me. That’s the difference from everybody else he’s ever fought, he’s fighting me; period. A hungry, determined, focused Magic Man.

S. Cunningham
But how you hungry and you driving Bentleys? How you hungry and you making over $500,000 a year? I ain’t see those numbers yet bro.

A. Tarver
I’m going to tell you because I’m not a prize fighter. I don’t fight for the money, I fight for pride. I fight for the glory of the game. It ain’t about no money. I make money. It ain’t about that. It’s about my name, it’s about my history.

This Hall of Fame run – this Hall of Fame run that I want to put the final chapter on my career. That’s it. It’s bigger than money Steve. It’s bigger than money.

Q
Antonio, is there anyone in particular that you would want to face, higher than your ranking, if you beat Cunningham.

A. Tarver
I want to face Wilder and Klitschko. I ain’t got nothing else to prove man. I’m going to prove it August 14. They know who I am. I’ve got five championships to my name. I don’t have to prove nothing. They know who I am and they know when I’m ready to fight, I’m going to tough out for anybody.

So I ain’t got time to be fighting all these non-descript fighters. I ain’t worried about ranked above me because my name carry weight. My name carry weight and that’s it.

Whatever I do on August 14, my next goal is to become the Heavyweight Champion because it ain’t nobody on they resume that they’ve faced that can add up to my name and my credibility in the game of boxing.

Not none of them guys that ain’t never won anything in they whole career. So I rest my case. August 14 everybody can see where I’m at. After that I want to chop down one of these giants and that’s it, period.

Q
Steve, can you tell the viewers honestly, what weaknesses do you see in Antonio Tarver that you think you can exploit on August 14.

S. Cunningham
The good thing about fighting a guy like Tarver is you – if you think you see a weakness than you’re fooling yourself. Like I said before in the beginning, respect is there most definitely. But fighting is fighting and getting prepared for a fight is mental and physical.

So our banter back and forth, that’s what fighters do also. But there’s no way I would disrespect myself to sit there and say that’s a weakness we’re going to exploit on Tarver. We’re going to beat him. You understand what I’m saying?

I mean and his strengths, like he said, he’s five time world champion. He’s a Fall of Famer already. He’s a great fighter. I think he’s a great fighter.

L. DiBella
I’ve got to say, I’ve got a lot of these calls. And the last 20 minutes or so were about the chippiest I’ve ever heard. So I think we’ve got a war ahead of us in the right on August 14, PBC on Spike, 9:00 Eastern Time; 9:00 Pacific Time. Tickets for the event are priced at $150, $100, $70, $45. Antonio Tarver believes he is destined to be oldest world heavyweight champion

antonio_tarver
MIAMI (July 21, 2015) – Five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) honestly believes that he is destined to become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history.

Before he gets a world title shot against fellow 1996 Olympian Wladimir Klitschko, the universally recognized world heavyweight champion, Tarver realizes that he has to get past former two-time IBF champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) in their 12-round heavyweight showdown August 14 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

WBA #9 Tarver vs. IBF #6/WBC #14 Cunningham is the main event on a Premier Boxing Champions series show airing live on Spike TV, the same network Tarver serves as its boxing color commentator.

“I know my purpose will set me apart from some great champions,” Tarver remarked. “I am supposed to be world heavyweight champion. I don’t know how but I will be world heavyweight champion. I truly believe that it is my destiny. Cunningham can’t stop me and neither can (Deontay) Wilder; he can’t learn enough to beat me. I’ll knock him out and get the one guy I really want to fight, Klitschko. When I beat him it’ll be the greatest story in boxing history. All the disbelievers will have to believe in ‘Magic Man!’

“Three years ago, I was buried six-feet under but they forgot to put dirt on me. Champions have to have resolve. I could have quit a lot of times. My resolve will make me world champion once again. No fighter has ever struggled like me and overcoming those struggles will make me world champion again.”

The ever popular Tarver realizes that, at 46, he isn’t the same fighter he as was in his early to mid-thirties, especially during a four-year, nine-fight murderous stretch between 2002-2006. As one of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters, he shocked nearly invincible Roy Jones, Jr. in two of three fights, split a pair with Glen Johnson, defeated Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and lost to Bernard Hopkins.

“I know I’m getting older because the calendar flips over once a year,” Tarver said, “but I don’t look at it as me getting old. I’m not saying I don’t wake up in pain during training camp without minor injuries, but nothing can stop me.

“It’s not an accident that I still have my speed and quickness. I am better today in many respects because I’m smarter from all of my experience.”

Known as one of the greatest defensive fighters ever, Tarver is fighting for his legacy and rightful place in the Hall of Fame after he finally retires. And now comes news that he will become a grandfather in September. “When I do decide to retire,” Tarver concluded, “I’ll hand the torch to my son, (undefeated middleweight prospect), Antonio Tarver, Jr.”

Not only does Antonio Tarver believe he’s destined to become the oldest world heavyweight champion, he will become the first to do so as a grandfather.

Antonio Tarver, Jr. Fighting Out of his father’s shadow

TAMPA (July 9, 2015) – Junior middleweight prospect Antonio Tarver, Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs), son of five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver, continues to fight out of his famous father’s shadow this Saturday night in Tampa.

The 27-year-old Tarver faces Julian Valerio (2-3) in a four-round bout off-television on the Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN show, headlined by Keith Thurman vs. Luis Collazo, at USF Sun Dome.

Tarver Jr. grew-up in nearby Daytona Beach and he recently relocated in Tampa where his father also lives. They have both trained in Miami with Orlando Cuellar. “This fight means a lot to me,” Tarver Jr. said. “I’m a young, up-and-coming fighter who has the great opportunity to fight Saturday night in front of family and friends. It’s only a two-hour drive from Daytona Beach. I’d like to thank ESPN, Al Haymon and everybody else who helped get me on this card. I sparred with him (Valerio) two years ago. He probably took this fight because of that sparring session, but I’ve got a big surprise for him Saturday night.”

The fightin’ Tarvers
There are many pros and cons having “Magic Man” as your father, especially when he is still an active, world-class fighter. “I’m my own man,” explained Tarver Jr. who was a basketball college player until he proved to his father that he was fully dedicated to boxing. “He’s more calculated; I’m quicker because I’m a junior middleweight and he’s a heavyweight. He’s a defensive genius and I’m working hard every day to improve my defense. I don’t put any pressure on myself as his son. He always told me to achieve my dreams, I’ve got to work hard, bust my butt, putting it all into my skills and crafts.

“I’ve only had 10 fights in my whole career (2 professional, 8 amateur) and I’m trying to catch-up with everybody else who have much more experience in the ring. But I have my father talking in my ear with advice from all of his experience and a great trainer in Orlando. People are going to see big differences from my first two fights. I’m ready for this fight!”

Antonio’s father is excited about his son’s third professional fight. “This is an unbelievable feeling to following my son’s transformation into the fighter he wants to be,” he admitted. “Nobody works harder than Junior. He’s dedicated, focused and all of that gives me a real easy feeling. All I do is talk to him to help him mentally. I can’t fight for him, but I can guide him, hoping he takes the right strides. He has everything going for him – talent and his head on straight. I never worry about him getting in trouble. He’s a different breed of fighter, my greatest accomplishment as a man, and I’m really excited about his future in this game.

The Tarvers with coach
Jimmy Williams
“He was Keith Thurman’s main sparring partner for his fight and there was a buzz from their sparring sessions. Keith is one of the hottest young fighters in the world and Junior gave him everything he could handle. I tell Junior all the time that sparring isn’t the same as a fight. Sparring doesn’t get you paid or championships. Junior knows that in a fight he has to do what he worked so hard on in the gym. The lessons he learned from sparring with Keith made Junior more confident.”
Tarver Jr. has been taught in Tampa by the same coach, 86-year-old Jimmy Williams, who also trained Tarver Sr. when he was 12.

“Every fight is a challenge and test as Antonio works his way up the boxing ladder,” Cuellar commented. “With his limited amateur experience, Antonio has had to learn on the job, cramming for the mental and physical challenges that will be presented. He’s passionate and dedicated on a consistent basis. Antonio seems to have all the tools to make a good run. We’ll grade his July 11th performance and go from there.”

As if Tarver Jr. needed any additional inspiration, he has just that as a father to-be for the first time this September. “The due date for my little boy is September 17,” he added. “That has motivated me even more.”

Antonio Tarver and trainer Orlando Cuellar

It also means that 46-year-old Tarver, Sr. will be fighting later this year as a grandfather, on his quest to become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history.

“I’m so happy for Junior but becoming a grandfather doesn’t make me feel old,” Tarver Sr. concluded. “He’s a different cat. I’m preventing him from making the mistakes I made. He’s been settled for five years with his girlfriend and now they’re having a baby. I couldn’t be happier. This is a great time for me. When I do decide to retire, I’ll hand the torch to him, still hot, and let’s see how far he runs with it.”

Huck to defend Cruiserweight crown on Tarver – Cunningham card on August 14

marco-huck7
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Cruiserweight titlist Marco Huck will defend his title against Kryzystof Glowacki on August 14 on the Antonio Tarver – Steve Cunningham card on Spike TV. The fight will mark the American debut for Huck.

“I will be celebrating two firsts when I step into the ring on Aug. 14,” Huck said. “On the one hand it will be my first fight under the banner of Huck Sports Promotion, who will co-promote the bout in close cooperation with DiBella Entertainment. Furthermore, I will be giving my U.S. debut. The fight against Glowacki will be my first abroad. After leaving (longtime promoter) Sauerland (Event) I said that I wanted to fight overseas. That promise is now being kept.”

“The Pole is unbeaten and has a good KO ratio,” Huck said. “He will also have a lot of locals cheering him on, as many Polish citizens live on the East Coast. It will almost be like a home crowd. I am, however, confident that at the end of the night the fans both on site and in front of their TVs, will be celebrating with me. Boxing fans in America want to be entertained by the warriors inside the squared circle and my style of fighting provides just that, entertainment. Mission USA can begin.”

“I think Marco Huck is a great fighter and also a legit star in Europe,” DiBella said. “If there’s a cruiserweight star, it’s Marco Huck. I’ve been a fan of his forever and we’ve been trying to work together. The PBC has created an opportunity for me to put him on American TV because Showtime and HBO have not embraced cruiserweights. So to have an opportunity to bring the cruiserweight star to the United States and he’s a guy who can hang with heavyweights. I thought he won the fight with Povetkin. I’m thrilled to work with his people and to be his American promoter now. This is Huck’s time to make a move.”

Rejuvenated Antonio Tarver Calls out David Haye

antonio_tarver1
TAMPA (Dec. 18, 2014) – All five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) wants for Christmas is a signed contract to fight former two-division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs), ideally, during the first-quarter of 2015.

Tarver had been sending direct tweets for the past six months to Haye, who hasn’t fought in more than two years, without receiving a response. Coming off last week’s impressive seventh-round knockout of veteran Johnathan Banks (29-3-1, 19 KOs), Tarver has taken off the proverbial gloves and he is now publically calling out Haye, who insists, once again, that he is coming out of retirement.

“In a perfect world I will be fighting Haye early next year,” Tarver said. “He keeps insisting that he’s the second-biggest name in the heavyweight division I need him to be my set-up guy to beat in order for me to get a world title shot against Wladimir Klitschko. Haye has one-punch knockout ability and he’s aggressive. Once I beat him, though, I want Klitschko. I will come to England and knockout Haye, knock him out cold. I’m 46 and I don’t want to go through 12 guys like (Chris) Arreola, (Eddie) Chambers or (Steve) Cunningham to get Klitschko. He’s waiting for me to lose so he doesn’t have to fight me. I’m calling out Haye to get Klitschko. He talks a lot but the boxing world will see if Haye’s serious about fighting again. Tarver vs. Haye is a huge fight in London.

“I’m a star and I want to get paid. None of these cats know how to really promote a fight like Antonio Tarver. I’d prefer to fight Haye in Las Vegas but I’ll come to England to KO his ass! I have the most powerful adviser in boxing, Al Haymon, and I’ve told him I want Haye next. If Haye announces he’s coming out of retirement to fight somebody else, I’ll be at that press conference to embarrass him, the same way I had to get my (Roy) Jones (Jr.) fight. I’m a throw-back fighter who can make a pay-per-view bonanza fighting Klitschko and the way to get that fight is by knocking out Haye. I doubt he’ll fight me because he knows he can’t beat me. I want David Haye in the UK!

“No heavyweight can outbox me. They will have to knock me out to beat me and nobody’s ever done that. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history to cement my legacy. I’m coming for Klitschko after I KO Haye. I’m going to shoot a real-life Rocky movie with me chopping down Klitschko.”

Tarver also had some terse words for critics who complained during and after his recent fight that Banks was a weak opponent and their fight was a snoozer until the final round.

“I hit him with a quick 1-2 and then he wouldn’t stand in front of me because he felt my speed and power early,” Tarver explained. “He didn’t want to get hit with my counter-punches. I wish he had opened up and fought but he didn’t exchange blows. Boxing is the art of self-defense but I don’t see fighters today using their heads. Boxing is chess not checkers. I can box but, when I pick that lock like I did in the seventh round, I can knockout any heavyweight in the world. I don’t think I was hit with one good punch. My reflexes and timing, even at 46, are second to none.”

Tarver initially suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. Tarver remained in the gym and put in the proper time and effort to stop Banks.

“We created tough sparring sessions to prepare him for Banks,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar commented. “We knew Banks was dangerous and that he could crack. We just kept training and Antonio had to overcome a lot of physical obstacles during camp. He just kept going. He tried to do the impossible and did it. He showed a lot of movement, the ability to explode, and tremendous ring generalship. He sure didn’t look 46 the way he cracked Banks. And he’ll be 50-percent better in his next fight.

“Antonio showed his dedication to improve in the gym. We had a good game plan but he had to do everything he worked on in the fight. His timing was good and he won every round. Banks came out planning to jump on Antonio but he tasted his power in the first 30 seconds and he then didn’t want any part of it. He honestly exceeded what I expected and I didn’t realize how good a finisher he is.”

If Santa Claus delivers a contract for him to fight Haye, he may as well give Tarver another display case, as well, to store the world heavyweight title belt Antonio plans to capture in 2015.

Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver Not concerned about ring rust

antonio_tarver1
MIAMI (Dec. 8, 2014) – Five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs) won’t be concerned about rust this Thursday night when he fights for the first time in more than a year against veteran Johnathan Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs).

Tarver-Banks is a 10-round heavyweight fight, presented on a Goossen Promotions card, airing live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes from Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Tarver suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. The 1996 U.S. Olympian has had only five fights in the last six years.

“I’m not concerned with rust,” the cagey southpaw said. “If I’m rusty, it will only be until I’m hit. I’ve been trying to wear off ring rust with intelligent sparring but that’s not like getting reps of a fight.

“I have to beat a solid heavyweight with power like Banks to get where I want to be. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history! He will be surprised by a lot of what I bring into the ring.”

Tarver has been training at the Brazilian Rocky Fight Club in Miami for the past three months to prepare for Thursday’s fight with Banks, who trained world heavyweight champion Wladmir Klitschko for his recent knockout win over Kubrat Pulev.

“I always stress to my fighters in the gym for them to work in rhythm and not be sluggish,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar explained. “Sluggishness and not fighting in rhythm are what shows when there’s ring rust. You always worry about rust. I can honestly say Antonio hasn’t looked rusty but, working in the gym and actual fighting are two different things, and we really won’t really know until this week’s fight. Antonio has always told me that he’s not a good gym fighter but that, once the bell rings for the first round, he’s a great fighter.

“This is the first fight we’ve worked together and Antonio has done everything I’ve asked of him in training for the last three months. He took five days off to be examined by his personal doctor and other than that he’s been working hard, even when he wore a cast. The first four weeks were tough for him because I train my fighters to stop and drop their opponent. It’s high intensity work, much harder than most fighters go through, but he’s given his all in workouts and sparring. With our experience, his as a fighter and me as a trainer, I expect nothing less than the best from Antonio. It’ll be much easier for both of us, training-wise, for his next fight.”

The 46-year-old Tarver, fighting out of Tampa, was one of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters during a 4-year, 9-fight stretch between 2002-2006, in which he had a 6-3 record, defeating Roy Jones, Jr. in two of three, splitting a pair with Glen Johnson, defeating Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and losing to Bernard Hopkins.

Banks, 32, has been out of action even longer than Tarver, having last fought June 23, 2013 in a 12-round loss by unanimous decision to Seth Mitchell.

“”Every fight is independent in itself,” Tarver noted, “so, I can’t say I’ve fought anybody like Banks. I have fought a lot of guys with power who know how to box. Everybody has two hands and two feet but he can only use one hand at a time. I simplify things. I will be in my best shape and I won’t be surprised by whatever he brings into the ring.”

JOSEPH “JO JO” DIAZ VS. RAUL “BULE” HIDALGO TO REPLACE ANTONIO TARVER VS. JOHNATHON BANKS AS MAIN EVENT IN MONDAY, SEPT. 29 GOLDEN BOY LIVE! EVENT DUE TO TARVER INJURY

Hidalgo, Texas (Sept. 18) – The recently announced junior featherweight bout between Southern California favorite Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz and Mexican warrior Raul “Bule” Hidalgo has been elevated from the co-main event to the main event for the Monday, Sept. 29 Golden Boy Live! fight night from the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas due to an injury suffered by former light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver.

Tarver, who was scheduled to face Johnathon Banks in a 10-round heavyweight bout on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, injured his thumb during training camp. “The injury actually happened two and a half weeks ago and I’ve been trying my hardest to work through it. Finally my doctor ordered an X-ray and we found out it was a fracture,” Tarver said of his injury.

Tarver added, “I’m very disappointed I won’t get to face Johnathon Banks, but hopefully we will be able to reschedule this fight with him for a later date. I was ready to make a statement with this fight, and I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Tarver still plans to be in Texas, however, to witness his son Antonio Jr.’s professional debut.

The remainder of the televised portion of the card will feature a co-main event between New Mexican junior welterweight Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. (18-2, 15 KOs) and an opponent to be determined, as well as junior welterweight Ricardo “Dinamita” Alvarez (23-3, 13 KOs) in the televised opener against an opponent to be determined.

“The show must go on,” said Oscar De La Hoya, founder and president of Golden Boy Promotions. “The loss of the Tarver vs. Banks fight is a disappointment, but fans in the State Farm Arena and those watching at home on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes will not be disappointed.”

A fighter whose maturity in the ring far surpasses his 21 years of age, South El Monte, California’s Joseph Diaz Jr. (11-0, 7 KOs) is enjoying a meteoric rise through the junior featherweight division. Already a 2014 winner over Jiovany Fuentes and Luis Maldonado, Diaz Jr. was impressive in his first 10-round bout in July, as he outpointed prospect Ramiro Robles.

One of Diaz’ most seasoned opponents yet, Chihuahua Mexico’s Raul Hidalgo (22-11, 16 KOs) has fit a lot of experience into his four years as a professional, and he intends to use every bit of it to score the upset on Sept. 29. A ferocious competitor who has faced off with the likes of Ivan Morales, AJ Banal, Daiki Kameda and Christopher Martin, the 25-year-old Hidalgo has won three of his last four bouts, most recently outpointing Gonzalo Garcia over 12 rounds in July.

Diaz vs. Hidalgo, a 10-round junior featherweight bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions and is sponsored by Corona Extra and O’Reilly AutoParts. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/9:00 p.m. CT/7:00 p.m. PT.

Individual tickets priced at $24, $30 and $50 as well as group table packages priced at $1,094, $886 and $664, plus applicable fees and service charges, are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Leija*Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302, the State Farm Arena at(956) 684-5115, Ticketmaster at (866) 448-7849 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver Fighting for his legacy

antonio_tarver1
MIAMI (September 4, 2014) – The long, arduous journey continues later this month for 5-time world light heavyweight champion and 2004 U.S. Olympian Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs). The ultra-confident 45-year-old southpaw is on a mission to capture the world heavyweight title, undeniably securing his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all-time.

Tarver returns to the ring September 29 against veteran Johnathon Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs) in the 10-round main event, on a Golden Boy Promotions card, airing live on Fox Sports 1 from State Farm Arena in Hildalgo, Texas.

“Al (Haymon, his adviser) has given me this chance,” Tarver explained. “If I retired tomorrow, I would feel unfulfilled despite so much I’ve done as a fighter. The only reason I get up every morning to train hard is to win the world heavyweight championship. I’m on a dream path again. Outside of falling a little short in Atlanta (he won a bronze medal, losing to eventual champion Vassiliy Jirov), I’ve never had a dream in or out of the ring that I didn’t accomplish. I won the world light heavyweight title, made it to Hollywood (starring as Mason Dixon in Rocky VI), and did commentary for a major network.

“I will be world heavyweight champion and I’ll break George Foreman’s record as the oldest. I don’t want to beat just any guy with the world title belt, I want Wladimir Klitschko, and to set-up that fight I will challenge and defeat David Haye, if he has the guts to fight me. Even at 45, I have so much fight in me, and there isn’t a heavyweight I can’t beat in a 12-round fight, unless they knock me out, something nobody’s been able to do in my entire career.”

First, though, Tarver needs to win in impressive fashion against Banks, who, ironically, also trains Klitschko. “Banks is a good fighter,” Tarver continued, “but I’m going into this fight in top shape, weighing 220 pounds, and totally focused. I’ll be sharp, quick, elusive and throwing combination punches should be the keys to victory. I will prevail and continue my journey.”

Tarver, fighting out of Tampa, believes he’s as much a threat today as he was during his “Murder’s Row”-like 4-year, 9-fight stretch between 2002-2006, in which he had a 6-3 record, defeating Roy Jones, Jr. in two of three, splitting a pair with Glen Johnson, defeating Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and losing to Bernard Hopkins.

“I never won a close fight and in my mind I’ve lost only twice, one to a 14-years younger version of myself, Chad Dawson, and Bernard Hopkins. Kelly Pavlik’s the only other fighter than me who knows what it’s like to be decisively favored and beaten by Hopkins, who is going to beat (Sergey) Kovalev, too. I never got a rematch with Bernard.

“I’ve never gotten the credit I deserve. I’m going to quiet my critics who never mention me as a Hall of Famer. I’m the best defensive fighter in boxing history. I’ve never been cut or hurt and that’s why I’m still here. Defense is a lost art. This is going to be sweet! I love boxing and I’ve forgotten more about it than kids today will ever know. I have a lot of experience. People have been sleeping on my abilities for a long time. I’m on a mission!”

Tarver will be headlining the card his 26-year-old middleweight son, Antonio Tarver, Jr., will making his professional debut. The Tarvers train at Brazilian Rocky Fight Club in Miami, under the guidance of head trainer Orlando Cuellar, who, ironically, trained Johnson for his two fights with Tarver.

Tarver & Cuellar
“I believe in Antonio because of his dedication, discipline and willingness to do what it takes to do as well as he possibly can,” Cuellar commented. “I’ve been sold on him since he walked in the gym and said he was ‘in it to win it.’ I’m not looking at his age. Hell, he’s been pushing me in training camp. I studied him carefully when he fought Glen and now I’m training him. It’s not so much about winning with Antonio, it’s really how much he hates to lose. People can’t write this guy off. There is a reason he’s a 5-time world champion. When the lights come on, he’s going to turn it up, and Banks is going to need his A game to deal with Antonio.”

The clock is ticking for Tarver. Every fight for him is now a must win.

“My record speaks for itself,” he concluded. “Writing me off is a big mistake. I’m going to do something big before I retire. People are going to see on September 29th the magic that’s been missing for a long time. My last few fights I didn’t scratch the surface of my abilities. I’m back…The Magic Man is back!”

ANTONIO TARVER VS. JOHNATHON BANKS TO HEADLINE SPECIAL MONDAY NIGHT EDITION OF FOX SPORTS 1 AND FOX DEPORTES’ GOLDEN BOY LIVE!

antonio_tarver1
HILDALGO, TX (August 13) – Monday night boxing will arrive in the great state of Texas on September 29 when FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes’ sensational series Golden Boy Live! presents an explosive heavyweight showdown between former Light Heavyweight World Champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver and top contender Johnathon Banks at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

“I’m happy to be back in the ring and fighting in Texas for the first time,” said Tarver, who returns to action for the first time since November, 2013. “A win over Johnathon Banks is just what I need to get my shot at the heavyweight title. To come back to boxing on the same day that my son, Antonio Jr. makes his pro-debut; that’s even more rewarding.”

“Tarver is a crafty veteran who deserves respect for what he’s done in the sport,” said Banks. “But his time has passed and I’ll remind him of that on September 29.”

“This is a great matchup between two veteran heavyweights who can show a lot of the younger kids how it’s done,” said Oscar De La Hoya, president and founder of Golden Boy Promotions. “I’m really looking forward to this one and as far as picking a winner, it’s a toss-up.”

One of the premier light heavyweights of his era, Antonio Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs) beat the likes of Roy Jones Jr., Glen Johnson, Montell Griffin and Eric Harding en route to a world title and a place on the pound-for-pound list. Now reinventing himself as a heavyweight contender, Tampa, Florida’s “Magic Man” is unbeaten in his last four bouts, most recently stopping Mike Sheppard in four rounds on November 26, 2013. On September 29, he looks to move closer to a world title shot.

A talented heavyweight veteran, Detroit’s Johnathon Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs) performs double duty in the division as a respected contender and the trainer of world champion Wladimir Klitschko. When he puts the gloves on September 29, the 32-year-old Banks plans on showing the form that has led him to knockout victories over the likes of Seth Mitchell and Travis Walker.

Individual tickets priced at $24, $30 and $50 as well as group table packages priced at $1,094, $886 and $664, plus applicable fees and service charges will go on sale on Friday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m. CT. Tarver vs. Banks, a 10-round heavyweight bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions in association with K2 Promotions and is sponsored by Corona Extra and O’Reilly AutoParts. Tarver to fight Jonathon Banks on September 29

antonio_tarver1
Former Light Heavyweight champion will come back to the ring on September 29 against Jonathon Banks in Hidlago, Texas according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Also on the card will be the pro debut of Middleweight Antonio Tarver Jr.

“It’s a good fight, he’s a solid guy, and with the long inactivity a lot of questions will be answered,” Tarver said of his fight with Banks. “Totally stoked about my son’s pro debut. He’s a spitting image of a young me with a more aggressive, fan-friendly style with speed and power.”

“This fight with Banks will tell me if I have the ability at 45 to truly make a run and conceivably fight for the heavyweight championship of the world,” Tarver said. “My quest starts with a tough fight. Banks is a guy raised in the sport. He can box. He has skills. But it’s a challenge I got to step up to. I want this type of fight. I need to realize if I can do it. I believe I can. This fight is a step closer for me.

“I wish I had more activity, but I’m just glad to be back. I want to show I still have it. I know my brand took some hits (over the drug suspension). I’m not naive. But I still got fight in me and the passion to fight. I’m not a shot fighter. I’ve been training hard and I know I can still do this. I don’t take Banks lightly. If I’m victorious, I will just look for my next opportunity. I am coming back to make a statement, but I was never retired or anything.

Tarver is very much looking forward to his son’s debut on the card.

“He’s been training really hard. He started boxing about three years ago and we’ve been taking it slow,” Tarver said. “I see a transformation in him and I think he’s ready at this stage. It’s time for him to get going if he is going to make his own imprint on boxing.

“I didn’t want to force him to box but he had an itch to box. He’s been around boxing his whole life.”

Tarver Jr. had only a handful of amateur fights while his father had hundreds, was a 1996 U.S. Olympian and one of the most decorated amateurs in U.S. history.

“He’s had on-the-job training,” Tarver said. “He’s a quick learner. He took it upon himself to do this. He has determination. I’m not trying to push him. He wants to challenge himself.”

Unbeaten 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale takes on Nagy Aguilera in an eight-round televised bout and veteran contenders Odlanier “La Sombra” Solis and Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson meet in a 10-round non-televised bout for the IBF Intercontinental Heavyweight Title.

In the evening’s 10-round co-main event, undefeated bantamweight Randy “El Matador” Caballero makes his Florida debut against local southpaw Jessy Cruz of Miami. Cruz tops a roster of Miami-based talent featured on the Nov. 26 fight card.

An intimidating force at 6-foot-6, Dominic Breazeale (7-0, 7 KO’s) has taken out all comers in his path since turning pro after the 2012 London Olympics. A veteran of fights against heavyweight stars Antonio Tarver, Samuel Peter, Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek, Aguilera has won three of his last four bouts, a hot streak he takes into the ring against Breazeale.

A six-time Cuban National Champion and 2004 Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist, Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13 KO’s) is one of the greatest boxers Cuba has ever produced. With three consecutive wins since his 2011 challenge of WBC Heavyweight World Champion Vitali Klitschko that ended due to a knee injury, Solis is well on his way back to the top and looking forward to his first fight in his adopted state of Florida, residing in Miami, since 2010.

Ten-year pro Kevin Johnson (29-3-1, 14 KO’s) is a former heavyweight world title challenger who has won seven of nine bouts since extending Vitali Klitschko into the championship rounds during their 2009 fight. Coming off of a knockout over Australia’s Solomon Haumono in April, 2013, the 34-year-old from Neptune, N.J., is ready for his meeting with Solis.

Adding to the undercard action, one of the light heavyweight division’s emerging stars, 26-year-old Thomas Williams (14-0, 10 KO’s) of Washington, D.C., looks to follow up his 2013 wins over Jason Smith, Kevin Engel and Otis Griffin with another big victory in a 10-round match against Yusef Mack (31-6-2, 17 KO’s) of Philadelphia.
