FROCH AND BARKER TALK FIGHTING ON THE ROAD IN ‘THE ROUNDS’

Carl Froch and Darren Barker own some of the best wins on away territory by British fighters, and the duo talk about fighting on the road with Chris Algieri on the latest episode of ‘The Rounds’.
WATCH EPISODE TWO OF ‘THE ROUNDS’ AS CARL FROCH AND DARREN BARKER JOIN CHRIS ALGIERI
Froch began life as WBC World Super-Middleweight champion with a thrilling final round win over Jermain Taylor in Connecticut in April 2009, and then in 2010-11, ‘The Cobra’ went on the road during the Super Six series to face Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Glen Johnson and Andre Ward.

Barker’s first World title action saw him face the formidable Middleweight king Sergio Martinez in Atlantic City in October 2011 and then returned to the same city in August 2013 to achieve his World title dreams in dramatic fashion against IBF king Daniel Geale.

Both men open up on those trips and more, including great stories on their sparring sessions together.

Carl Froch: “I enjoyed being on the road. When we boxed for England we were going to hostile environments and fighting top fighters back-to-back in nations tournaments, but I was always a nervous fighter. So, when I defended my title against Jermain Taylor in Connecticut, I was nervous about it all.

“Not so much boxing abroad, but more that it was Taylor, a former undisputed Middleweight World champion. I saw him get out of this limousine for the press conference in NYC and he just looked like the don, he had this nice suit on and looked crisp and clean. I was just there with a hoodie and t-shirt and I was thinking ‘do I belong here?’ It was quite a daunting thing for me, and I was always quite nervous and apprehensive as a fighter, I was unsure of myself, and I was a new World champion and making my first defense. I didn’t really know if I belonged at World level and here I was fighting Taylor in America. I look back at that fight now and think how naive I was at that level and I just had to put all my trust in Rob McCracken and my fitness, my refusal to quit and my competitive nature, I like to win.

“[Kessler and the volcanic ash cloud] On Tuesday of fight week we had Sky News on and they were saying all the flights we grounded so I am thinking I am definitely not going, the US broadcasters aren’t going to be able to make it over, so it’s definitely off. We had a barbecue in the garden, I had a couple of cans of Guinness; I don’t drink much, and I had a couple of them in fight week! The next day my promoter rang me and said that the Sauerlands’s were sending a private jet and the flight was at 2pm. Private jet sounds glamorous but it wasn’t, it was a five-seater, it was bumpy all the way and Rob doesn’t like heights so he was white all the way and didn’t say a word, hanging onto the seat and looking at me, and I was winding him up saying ‘I think we’re bang in trouble here this plane is all over the place!’

“I crashed the weight which I never do, and at the weigh-in I felt weak. It’s the first and only time I ever did that, but I don’t want people to think I’m making an excuse, I felt good to fight and had a great 12 rounds against a brilliant fighter and I just didn’t quite do enough. But going over on the Wednesday under that ash cloud in fight week and being overweight, switching off, it was horrible. I believe that things happen for a reason though and in boxing you don’t win or lose, you win or learn. I learnt how to come back and in my next fight I fought Arthur Abraham and the WBC title was back up for grabs, that boosted my spirits and that loss then didn’t feel as bad.

“The loss with Andre Ward felt worse. Andre is a fantastic fighter, very skillful, fast, hard to hit, good with his jab. I remember getting out of the fight thinking, I had a decent rounds in 10, 11 and 12, and I was getting into it and I thought, why didn’t I start earlier, why didn’t I get into it, why didn’t I believe in myself? But that’s what we do when we lose, we look for reasons.”

Darren Barker: “I never felt more nervous or under pressure in the States and I think a big part of that was the experience of fighting all over the world as an amateur.

“I flew into New York with Eddie Hearn and we were in and out for the Martinez press conference, I remember the American’s almost laughing at me for showing any confidence, even though I was undefeated and European champion, I just hadn’t fought anybody. I was confident in my ability, but it was the unknown, I had sparred hundreds of rounds with Carl, an elite level fighter, but it’s still sparring. I knew I was capable of being in there with elite fighters, but I didn’t quite understand where I was at the time.

“I don’t have any regrets looking back at my career, but I have a slight one looking back at that fight because I think if I had believed in myself a little more, been more aggressive and forced the action more, then potentially I could have caused a huge upset. I’m not saying that it would have happened, I just wished I gave it a bit more. But the whole unbuild up was just the reason I chose boxing, I was on top of a huge skyscraper in New York for the presser and thinking, ‘this is it, I’ve made it’. I was walking up fifth avenue with Eddie and we walked past a shop with bright green trousers in the window and Eddie said: ‘you should buy them and wear them at the press conference for a laugh!’ I said: ‘no chance, I wouldn’t be seen dead in them!’ We got to the press conference and Sergio was wearing that exact pair of trousers!

“The Repton club had a knack of churning out top quality Southpaws so I was never fazed at fighting them, I knew I would be able to compete with him and it was a great experience for me and one that was massively valuable going onto the Geale fight.

“I’d been to Atlantic City for the Martinez fight, so it wasn’t alien to me and I was driven to right that wrong. We had a similar game plan, to be aggressive but smart, on the front-foot and hold center of the ring. It wasn’t until I got in there that I realized how awkward he was, he had a knack of getting out of range, I was falling short and adopted a different plan to get on his chest and outwork him.

“The moment I got put down in the sixth round, a lot of people know my brother Gary passed away, he was a very good fighter and if I had have lost that fight I would never have fought again, it would have been a box that hadn’t been ticked and it would have eaten away. So, I was just so prepared to leave everything in the ring that night that a body shot was never going to keep me down, fast-forward to the 12th round and hearing Michael Buffer say, ‘and the new’, I still can’t believe it. I achieved what I set out to do.

“There were a lot of question marks over my toughness, but I always knew I was tough. You don’t do 12 rounds of sparring with Carl and not be tough! I always knew there was a fight out there to show everyone I was mentally and physically tough.”

Froch and Barker star in the second episode of ‘The Rounds’ and the first episode, featuring Mikey Garcia, Devin Haney and Daniel Jacobs talking about the highs and lows of boxing, can be found on Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel.

ABRAHAM BACKS FEIGENBUTZ TO BECOME WORLD CHAMPION AND TEASES STURM FIGHT

One of Germany’s most decorated boxers Arthur Abraham (47-6, 30 KOs) has tipped Vincent Feigenbutz (31-2, 28 KOs) to become Germany’s latest World Champion on February 15th when he takes on Caleb Plant (19-0, 11 KOs) for the IBF Super Middleweight World title at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Abraham, a two-weight multiple-time World Champion has held the IBF Middleweight World title and the WBO Super Middleweight World title twice throughout his illustrious career, is confident that Feigenbutz can upset the odds and beat the Nashville native Plant in his hometown.

“It’s going to be a tough fight because Caleb Plant is one of the best super middleweights there is,” said Abraham. “However, Vincent has a great chance to win the World title. If he is brave, tough and demonstrates his punching power then he can win the fight.

“No matter what country, boxing anywhere is the same. If you are the away fighter then it’s always much more difficult to get the decision. I think knocking out Caleb Plant will make it much easier for Vincent to become victorious.

“Vincent needs to maintain his focus but also stay relaxed,” continued Abraham. “I know Vincent has trained hard, he always does. But as I mentioned he has to be brave, hard and also confident. A victory would be very important for the development of boxing in Germany and would help it to become successful again.”

‘King Arthur’ was last in action in April 2018 when he dropped Denmark’s Patrick Nielsen en route to a points victory and the 39-year-old has been linked with a return to the ring against fellow two-weight World Champion Felix Sturm. When questioned if he would consider facing his former foe, Abraham simply replied:

“If Felix Sturm wants to box me, I’m always ready to do it.”

The IBF Super Middleweight World title fight between Caleb Plant and Vincent Feigenbutz takes place at the 20,000-seater Bridgestone Arena on February 15th and all the action will be broadcast live on Fox in the US and other territories to be released shortly.

Abraham and Nielsen meet in crunch Super Middleweight clash

Former two-time World Champion Arthur Abraham (46-6, 30 KOs) will meet Denmark’s Patrick Nielsen (29-2, 14 KOs) in a make or break Super Middleweight showdown on April 28 at the Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany.

Abraham returns to the ring having dropped a points decision to Chris Eubank Jr. in an IBO World title contest on July 15 at The SSE Arena, Wembley, while Nielsen is back in action after a knockout loss to John Ryder at the same London venue on October 14.

Following these defeats, both men are now eager to re-establish their World title credentials in this crunch Super Middleweight clash.

Having consulted his long-term coach and mentor, Abraham, the former IBF Middleweight and WBO Super Middleweight World Champion, says he is ready to get back on the World title trail in an attempt to reclaim his 168 lbs crown.

“After my last fight, I spoke to my coach Ulli Wegner and he helped me reach a decision,” said ‘King Arthur’. “I am not ready to retire! There is still more I want to achieve in boxing, and most of all I want to become World Champion again.

“I’m looking forward to fighting Patrick Nielsen, and putting on a good performance for my fans. I know Patrick is a good boxer. This will be a good test for me and a chance to prove I’m ready to challenge for World titles again.”

Nielsen, the former WBC Silver Middleweight and WBA International Super Middleweight Champion, says he is looking forward to facing Abraham in Offenburg, and having learnt a lesson from the Ryder loss, believes he has what it takes to defeat the German boxing icon and get his career back on track.

“I can’t wait for this fight,” said the 26 year-old from Albertslund. “My last fight really put things into perspective. I have made some changes in my training and my personal life, and now, I’m 100% focused on boxing. People will see the real Patrick Nielsen on April 28.

“Abraham is still a big name in boxing and a very tough guy. If I can beat him, it shows I can beat a lot of the top guys, and hopefully that will lead to bigger fights. I believe I can beat him. I’ve got age and speed on my side, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to win.”

Having started his professional career in Germany, Nielsen says he has no concerns leaving Denmark to meet Abraham in his home country. “Germany is like a second home to me,” he said. “I used to fight there when I started so I can’t wait to get back there again.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland has highlighted the importance of this fight for both men. “This is a fight neither man can afford to lose,” said Sauerland. “Both men want to get back into World title contention – but only one can come out on top! The winner can be challenging for World titles, while the loser will have a long road back. There is a lot on the line and that guarantees excitement. Fans can look forward to a great night of action in Offenburg.”

Tickets for Arthur Abraham vs. Patrick Nielsen on April 28 in Offenburg will go on sale tomorrow and are available online via www.evetim.de or calling 01806-570044.

Eubank Jr. (24-1, 19 KOs) will make his first International Boxing Organization (IBO) super middleweight world title defense against Abraham (46-5, 30 KOs), but it has just been announced that the winner will now move on to compete in the World Boxing Series for the inaugural Muhammad Ali Trophy.

The super middleweight division of the World Boxing Series (WBC) already includes a star-studded field: World Boxing Association (WBA) Super champion George Groves (26-3, 19 KOs), former WBA and World Boxing Organization (WBO) title-holder Juergen Braehmer (48-3, 35 KOs), Erik Skoglund (26-0, 12 KOs), Jamie Cox (23-0, 13 KOs), Callum Smith (22-0, 17 KOs), Rob Brant (22-0, 15 KOs) and Avni “Mr. Robot” Yildirim (16-0, 10 KOs).

The official WBS draw was held this past weekend in Monaco and the No. 3 seeded Eubank Jr-Abraham winner is matched against Yildirim, the 25-year-old Turk and reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silver champion, in the quarterfinals.

“I look forward to testing myself against the best fighters out there,” Eubank Jr. said. “The Muhammad Ali Trophy is a great idea and I am thrilled to participate. I am taking one step at a time and right now all my focus is on the fight with Arthur Abraham. With just one win between me and the World Boxing Series, I am extremely motivated.”

The World Boxing Series, which also features eight elite cruiserweights competing in the other division, will be conducted in a bracket-style elimination tournament. There will be four quarterfinals (September/October 2017), two semifinals (early 2018) and one final in May 2018.

“All my focus is on the difficult and spectacular fight in Wembley,” Abraham commented. “I have to and I will defeat Eubank in a big fight. Then things will take off with the World Series of Boxing, which really is amazing. There are so many great fights in such a short period of time, like blow-by-blow. The boxing fans will really love it. I have been dreaming of having a tournament with the world’s best boxers. I will become the world’s best super middleweight. This really is the Champions League of Boxing and I am really looking forward to it.”

International Boxing Federation (IBF) Featherweight World Champion “Lightning” Lee Selby (24-1, 9 KOs) makes the third defense of his IBF Featherweight World title, which he originally captured May 30, 2015, taking an eighth-round technical decision over previously unbeaten Evgeny Gradovich (19-0-1, 9 KOs), in the 12-round co-feature against former WBA Featherweight World Champion and IBF No. 1 ranked contender, Argentinian challenger Jonathan Victor “Yoni” Barros (41-4-1, 22 KOs).

Also scheduled to air live are a pair of 12-round championship bouts as IBF No. 11-ranked Kid Galahad (22-0, 13 KOs) defends his IBF Inter-Continental featherweight title against Mexican challenger Jose “El Tigre” Cayetano (21-5, 10 KOs), in addition to undefeated WBA Continental super lightweight champion Robbie Davis Jr. (15-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 4 by the IBF, taking on Michal Syrowatka (18-1, 6 KOs), of Poland.

All fights and fighters subject to change.

Abraham hurt; fight with Murray off

Arthur Abraham
Arthur Abraham hurt his elbow as he was training for his November 12th fight with Martin Murray and now the fight is off, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“We’ll keep our cards open for the next [few] days to see what will be next,” said Abraham’s promoter Kalle Sauerland.

“My rematch with Abraham is off due to him being injured,” Murray said. “Just in the process of sorting another opponent now.”

‘KING KONG’ ORTIZ TOPS HUGE MONTE-CARLO BOXING BONANZA

Luis Ortiz
Matchroom Boxing and the Casino de Monte-Carlo are delighted to announce a blockbuster night of World championship boxing on November 12 at Salle des Etoiles, Sporting Monte-Carlo in ‘Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza’ live on Sky Sports.

One of the world’s most dangerous and exciting Heavyweights, Luis Ortiz, tops the bill as he looks to add to his 22 KOs from 25 wins as he takes on Malik Scott for the WBA Inter-Continental title – with Ortiz making his European debut in his first fight since teaming up with Matchroom Boxing.
WBA World Bantamweight king Jamie McDonnell defends his crown against Liberio Solis. It’s the fifth defence for the Doncaster ace, who followed his stoppage win over Javier Chacon with a pair of impressive wins over Tomoki Kameda in Texas last year and stopped Fernando Vargas in nine rounds at The O2 in London this April.
Former Super-Flyweight World ruler Solis boxes for the second time to become a two-weight World champion having severely tested WBC king Shinsuke Yamanaka in Japan in March, with both men hitting the canvas before the champion outpointed the Venezuelan challenger.
Stephen Smith has landed a second World title crack, challenging WBA Super-Featherweight kingpin Jason Sosa. Smith travelled to Connecticut to meet IBF ruler Jose Pedraza in April in his first outing for a World belt, and recovered from that points loss with a commanding win over Daniel Brizuela in his hometown of Liverpool a month later. Puerto Rican-American Sosa defends his strap for the first time having ripped the crown from Javier Fortuna in Beijing in June.
There’s a tasty rematch on the bill as Martin Murray looks to avenge his World title loss to Arthur Abraham as the pair clash for the WBO International Super-Middleweight belt – with Murray looking for revenge after suffering a split-decision loss for the German’s World title in November.
The Sporting Monte-Carlo has held two huge World title nights in the last two years, with pound-for-pound Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin defeating Martin Murray in February 2015 and Randy Cabellero outpointing Stuart Hall for the IBF Bantamweight crown in October 2014.
“It is an absolute honour to bring this huge night of World championship boxing to Monaco,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s been a wonderful few years for British boxing but to showcase this great sport in such a high quality environment is very exciting. This is going to be the most high profile fight night of the year and we are looking forward to putting on an exceptional night of boxing for Monte-Carlo, fans and all of our international broadcasters.”
“We are thrilled to host this new world class boxing event and to perpetuate the tradition of boxing in Monaco which had now become a major rendez-vous for the Casino de Monte-Carlo” said Pascal Camia, Executive Vice President, Casinos of Monaco. “From the gambling tables to the ring, the adrenaline will be flowing for a night of show and entertainment to be remembered.”

Abraham to take on Lihaug on July 16

Arthur Abraham
Former two division champion Arthur Abraham will face Tim-Robin Lihaug on July 16, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“My goal is to become world champion again, and I will not let anyone stand in my way,” said Abraham, who is also a former middleweight titleholder. “Tim-Robin Lihaug is a good, young fighter but he will learn the hard way what it takes to make it to the top.”

“I never underestimate any of my opponents, and I will prepare myself to be in top shape,” Abraham said. “I want to put the disappointment of losing to Ramirez behind me and prove I still have more to give. I’m looking to the future now, and that starts with a good win on July 16.”

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Lihaug said. “Abraham has been a great champion for many years, but I wouldn’t have taken this fight if I didn’t think I could win. He is beatable and I’m coming to Berlin to win.

“Abraham is 36 years old and has already won a lot of titles and made a lot of money, whereas I’m a young, hungry fighter, and I think that will give me an advantage. This is like a world title fight to me. It means everything. I’ve been in training camp since the beginning of January and I will be in the best shape of my life on July 16. I want to prove myself and there is no better way of doing that than by beating Abraham.”

Boxing legend Chavez backing Ramirez to beat ‘great champion’ Abraham

julio-cesar-chavez
Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez is backing Gilberto Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs) to dethrone WBO World Super Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs) on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While hosting his ESPN show ‘A Los Golpes’, the former six-time World Champion told Ramirez: ‘’I have a lot of faith in you. I believe you will win the fight but you have to take advantage of your height and youth because Arthur Abraham is a great champion!’’

Despite his prediction, Abraham, who is aiming for a sixth successive defence of his WBO title, was flattered by Chavez’s remarks.

‘’I love this man. He was a real warrior who would give everything in the ring,’’ said ‘King Arthur’. ‘’He is one of my boxing idols so it means a lot for him to call me a great champion. However, I must disappoint him on April 9, by beating his countryman Ramirez.’’

One man confident Abraham’s Las Vegas debut will prove successful is his coach Ulli Wegner, who believes Ramirez’s lack of experience will be the deciding factor.

‘’A fight like this is won in the mind, and for Ramirez, there are still a lot of questions he must answer,’’ said Wegner. ‘’This is his first World title fight. Can he handle the pressure? Can he master his tactics over twelve rounds? All this remains to be seen.’’

For the defending champion there is no question of his bravery as he travels into enemy territory to face the undefeated Mexican, using as his motto: ‘’ Mejor morir de pie que vivir arrodillado!’’ (Translated: It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!)

Arthur Abraham defends his WBO World Super Middleweight title against Gilberto Ramirez on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s farewell fight with Timothy Bradley on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

STATEMENT FROM ARTHUR ABRAHAM

Arthur Abraham
This fight is a dream come true for me. I fought in Hollywood, Florida vs. Edison Miranda, against Andre Dirrell in Detroit and vs. Andre Ward in Carson, California. But the flair of a big-time event was missing. I was at Manny’s fight vs. Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in 2011 and the atmosphere captured my imagination. Afterwards, it was my wish to one day step into this very ring and on April 9 I will finally get the chance to share the spotlight with the “Pac-Man”. I do not take a win that night for granted, as Gilberto Ramirez is a young upcoming boxer from Mexico, one of the greatest fighting countries. He wants to write history by becoming the first Mexican to win a world championship at super middleweight. But myself being an Armenian, living and fighting out of Germany, I have two values to fight for: pride and honor. I will go into this fight with the following words on my mind: “Mejor morir de pie que vivir arrodillado!” This is going to be my greatest victory. Thank you!

“Fighting in Las Vegas on the biggest stage of them all is a dream come true for me, and sharing the spotlight with Manny Pacquiao, a true legend of the ring, makes this opportunity even sweeter,” said Abraham. “I have all the motivation I need including the challenge of a young hungry fighter in Gilberto Ramirez. I respect Ramirez and see him as one of the toughest challenges in my career, but I will not be denied a victory in my U.S. breakout fight, and believe my experience will prove too much for him. I promise to deliver a great fight for the American fans, and with another successful defense of my title I will pave the way for a great pay-per-view event and leave the fans screaming for more!”

“I am very happy to finally get my first opportunity to fight for a world title,” said Gilberto Ramirez. “I have worked very hard to get to this point and will work even harder to win the world championship on April 9. I am going up against a great champion and that is why I will prepare myself like I never have before for a fight.”

“I am happy to fight on April 9, I have a difficult opponent on that night but the plan is to get a win and get myself closer to that world title shot that I hunger for,” said Valdez.

“This is going to be an exciting great battle,” said Gradovich. “Óscar Valdez is a very good fighter and I look forward to getting into the ring against him on such a big card with Manny Pacquiao against Tim Bradley in the main event on April 9.”
“I’m excited and honored and feel blessed for this opportunity for myself and my team on one of boxing’s biggest stages,” said Jose Ramírez. “I will be ready for the fans worldwide and I want thank to my manager Rick Mirigian for getting it done.”

“I am very excited for this opportunity from Top Rank. It’s a dream come true to be able to showcase my abilities on such a main stage,” said Perez. “I promise boxing fans I will be 100% ready for the matchup with Jose. I’m ready to show the world who I am.”

“On April 9 we will be presenting three of the top fighters in the world today engaging in significant bouts. All three are of Mexican origin and represent the future of the sport of boxing.

“Jose Ramírez, a star from the Central Valley in California, will box in his first 10-round bout. He is immensely popular in the Central Valley area and is a tremendous attraction at the gate.

“Óscar Valdez, a two-time Mexican Olympian, is considered to be one of the finest fighters in the world. He is in a crossroads fight against former world champion Evgeny Gradovich which will be a true test.

“Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, the No. 1 super middleweight contender in the world, will fight against long-time champion Arthur Abraham. Gilberto is on a quest to become the first Mexican to win a world championship in this weight division.

“These three fights are all action, complementing the Pacquiao vs Bradley main event which should also be a tremendous battle,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs), of Berlin, Germany, is a three-time, two-division world champion. He captured the vacant IBF middleweight world title in 2005 knocking out Kingsley Ikeke in the fifth round. He successfully defended the title 11 times during his four-year reign, which included victories over top-rated contenders Shannan Taylor, Kofi Jantuah, Edison Miranda and former world champion Raul Marquez. Abraham vacated the title in 2009 to move up to the super middleweight division. He dethroned Robert Stieglitz in 2012 via a 12-round unanimous decision to claim the WBO super middleweight title and ending Stieglitz’s three-year reign. After losing the title in his second defense, a 2013 rematch to Stieglitz, Abraham reclaimed the title in 2014, again winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Stieglitz. Abraham has successfully defended the title five times, including a sixth-round TKO of Stieglitz last year.

Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs), a two-fisted super middleweight wrecking machine who hails from Mazatlan, Mexico, is the top world-rated contender in the WBO and the World Boxing Association (WBA) and is world-rated No. 2 by the WBC. A sensational young contender, Ramirez, 24, has won four of his last seven bouts by knockout. 2014 featured career-best performances which included an NABF and NABO title victory over Giovanni Lorenzo via fifth-round stoppage, a WBO International title knockout victory over Junior Talipeau and a successful defense of his NABF and WBO International titles, stopping Fulgencio Zuniga in the eighth round. Last year he successfully defended his titles via unanimous decisions over once-beaten Maxim Vlasov, division gate keeper Derek Edwards, who boasts a KO victory over world champion Badou Jack, and once-beaten Gevorg Khatchikian, who had scored knockouts in five of his last six victories.

Valdez (19-0, 16 KOs), who represented Mexico in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, was the first Mexican fighter to qualify for two Olympic games and is considered one of the bright lights of the featherweight division and a top prospect in boxing. On the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao – Timothy Bradley welterweight world championship rematch in 2014, Valdez captured the NABF super featherweight junior title, knocking out Adrian Perez in the fourth round. Valdez successfully defended that title twice in 2014, knocking out Noel Echevarria and Alberto Gonzalez in the sixth and seventh rounds, respectively. From Nogales, Sonora, Mexico Valdez, at age 25, Valdez returns to the ring looking to build on the sterling year he had in 2015 where he won all four of his fights — three by knockout. On April 11, he fashioned a third-round blasting of Jose Ramirez in Laredo, Texas. Valdez followed that with his live HBO debut, winning a dominant 10-round unanimous decision over one-time world title challenger Ruben Tamayo on June 27 in Carson, Calif. He ended the year with knockout victories of top-10 contender and one-time world title challenger Chris Avalos and Ernes Sanchez on September 11 and December 12, respectively. The four fighters boasted a combined record of 91-19-5. He is currently the WBO’s No. 1 world-rated featherweight contender.

Gradovich (21-1-1, 9 KOs), a native of Igrim, Russia, fights out of Oxnard, Calif., under the tutelage Robert Garcia, the Boxing Writers Association of America 2012 Trainer of the Year. Known as “El Ruso Mexicano” (The Mexican Russian) for his fan-friendly all-offensive style of fighting, Gradovich captured the IBF featherweight title when he dethroned defending champion Billy Dib in 2013 via a split decision. The exciting fight was televised by ESPN2 which garnered Gradovich legions of new fans. He successfully defended his title four times during his two-year reign, including a ninth-round stoppage of Dib in their rematch, before losing his title last May to Lee Selby via an eighth-round technical decision due to an accidental clash of heads that produced a
deep and bloody gash over Gradovich’s right eye which forced an early stoppage of the fight. The scorecards to that point were in favor of the challenger who became the new world champion. Gradovich has bounced back since that disappointing loss, winning 10-round decisions over Aldimar Santos and Jesus Galicia.

Ramírez (16-0, 12 KOs), from Avenal, Calif. is trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach and will prepare for this fight as a sparring partner for Pacquiao. Eight of his last 10 fights have ended with knockout victories. His social activism on behalf of the Central Valley farmers’ water rights has made him an icon in that area where he regularly sells out their largest venues as a fight card headliner. In his last fight, in December, he captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas super lightweight title, winning a unanimous decision over battle-tested Johnny Garcia. A member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team and an 11-time National Amateur Champion, Ramírez surpassed multi-division world champions Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Shane Mosley to become USA Boxing’s all-time lightweight record holder.

Perez (25-11-1, 6 KOs), from Denver, CO., is a former NABA super lightweight and WBC Continental Americas featherweight champion. He makes his 2016 debut having won five of his last six fights, including all three of his 2015 fights. Two of his 2015 victories were by knockout, including a sixth-round stoppage of former world champion DeMarcus Corley.

MANNY PACQUIAO, ARTHUR ABRAHAM, FREDDIE ROACH, EVGENY GRADOVICH AND MANNY PEREZ STRIKE SUPER BOWL GOLD WITH BRONCOS PREDICTIONS

Pacquiao_Mayweather_weighin_150501_001a
LAS VEGAS, NV. (February 8, 2016) — They have vastly different backgrounds yet they have two things in common — they will be in title fights on the same April 9 pay-per-view card, and they picked the Denver Broncos to win Super Bowl 50.

Fighter of the Decade MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO, seven-time Trainer of the Year World-Famous FREDDIE ROACH, World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight world champion “King” ARTHUR ABRAHAM, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) featherweight world champion EVGENY GRADOVICH and dangerous veteran MANNY PEREZ participated in a Super Bowl 50 boxing celebrity poll last week and all of the above nailed it. They correctly predicted that the Broncos would beat the odds and emerge victorious. Who says experience isn’t the best teacher?

Pacquiao (@MannyPacquiaoTR), who will face five-time world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY JR in the world welterweight championship main event, Tweeted this out today: “After leading the Broncos to their Super Bowl 50 victory, I’m changing my name to Manning Pacquiao. Peyton Manning is an inspiration.”

Roach (@FreddieRoach), Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer Tweeted out: “If Teddy [Atlas] thinks Super Bowl 50 was Cam Newton’s time, he’d better get a new watch. Manny Pacquiao will clean Tim Bradley’s clock on April 9.”

Abraham, who will be defending his world title against undefeated WBO No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ, had this to say today from Germany: “I feel like Nostradamus. Get ready for my next prophecy to come true — on April 9, I will beat Ramirez decisively and remain world champion. Ramirez is young, like Cam Newton. I will teach him that experience and an explosive defense wins championships.”

Here are their original predictions and the predictions of their opponents:

MANNY PACQUIAO
“Peyton Manning is a great competitor and with the possibility that this could be his last game I think he will be an inspiration to the Broncos to win and to end Peyton’s career as a world champion. He is certainly an inspiration to me.”

TIM BRADLEY
“It’s very clear to me — Carolina Panthers 31-27.”

FREDDIE ROACH
“I’m going with the Broncos because Peyton Manning, like Manny Pacquiao, has racked up all the records and the victories against superior opposition. Champions like Manning and Pacquiao know only one way to go out in their last rodeo and that’s on top. It’s Manningfest Destiny.”

TEDDY ATLAS (Bradley’s trainer)
“It is Cam Newton’s time as I believe it is Tim Bradley’s and that is why Newton will win a Super Bowl and Bradley, a super championship, while Peyton Manning and Manny Pacquiao both retire after great careers.”

ARTHUR ABRAHAM
“I like the Denver Broncos‘ chances to win Super Bowl 50, I like them a lot! Peyton Manning is one of the all-time greats, the oldest quarterback to lead a team to a Super Bowl berth. With his experience in clutch-time situations, he cannot be denied winning his second championship ring. In addition, the Broncos have had THE best defense all season long, knowing how to penetrate the opposing team for errors. That could be compared to my style of boxing. And nine out of 10 times, a good defense beats a good offense in championships. Watch the Broncos prevail 24 – 17 against Cam Newton’s Panthers.”

GILBERTO RAMIREZ
“The Panthers have an explosive offense and a very strong defense. Carolina 28 to 21.”

MANNY PEREZ
“No. 1 Defense vs. No. 1 Offense. Defense wins games. Denver Broncos 24 to 10.”

JOSE RAMÍREZ (WBC Continental Americas super lightweight champion)
“Panthers because of their momentum. Their confidence as a team and their Quarterback, “Super” Cam Newton, started strong during the season and seem to get stronger. Final score will be Carolina 24-17.”

AWE–A Wealth of Entertainment– CONTINUES IN TELEVISING BOXING’S MOST EXCITING MOMENTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

AWE Live Boxing
San Diego, CA – November, 25, 2015 -This past Saturday, Anthony Crolla realized a lifetime dream as he became the WBA Lightweight champion with a stunning body shot 5th round knockout over defending champion Darleys Perez.

Just before that, Arthur Abraham defended the WBO Super Middleweight title with a split decision over Martin Murray.

Crolla – Perez, which took place in Manchester, England and Abraham – Murray, which originated from Hanover, Germany highlighted a split site championship doubleheader on AWE- A Wealth of Entertainment.

The two continued a string of high quality world title bouts broadcasted on AWE.

“This was a great kickoff to a great day of boxing,”said AWE president, Charles Herring.

“To show two high-quality world title bouts from two different countries fits into what we want to give the fans and that is the best boxing throughout the world.”

Crolla landed the perfect paralyzing shot that ended the fight and sent the Manchester Arena into a frenzy.

“This is what I have dreamt about since I was a kid,” said Crolla. “To achieve it, well, it is going to take a long time to sink in – I’m absolutely made up. I couldn’t have picked a better setting to have achieved my dream, all my family and friends were in the arena and the fans were incredible.

“The people who have been with me from day one were all there and I am so happy to have done it for them too. It’s a tough time of the year for people to dip into their pockets and pay for tickets so I am grateful to them and I hope they had a great night.

“It’s just under a year since the attack and all that has been well-documented, I promised myself when I was laying on that hospital bed that I would come back stronger than ever and that’s what I have done.

“I knew after a few rounds that he was feeling the pace and he made a few noises when I hit him with some shots, he was sharp though and he was hitting harder than he did last time, I took a few stupid shots early on but I thought I would get to him and it paid off. I felt confident before the fight that I could get him out of there.

“That’s the best body shot I’ve thrown in my career. I was touching him up top and I knew as soon as he went down that he was going to struggle to bet the count. He was sat down for a few minutes after the decision so it caught him perfectly, I’ll look forward to watching it back again and again.

“I am capable of more than that – it was a good finish but it wasn’t a great performance.”

Murray seemed to be more active fighter and landed some big shots throughout the fight. In round eleven, Murray was deducted a point for holding which seemed like it could have been a deciding factor in the close battle but it did not come into play as Abraham won the debated decision by tallies of 116-111, 115-112 while Murray took a card 115-112.

“Obviously I’m gutted,” said Murray. “I really thought it was my night and when the final bell went – even though we were in Germany – I still thought I had it. I still thought I had done enough. When they said it was a split decision even then I still thought I’d got it.

“I know I’m too good to retire but the way I am feeling now, what can I do? It was my fifth shot. I just can’t keep doing this. I just can’t keep doing it to my family.”

San Diego, CA – November, 20, 2015 -Anthony Crolla and Martin Murray have backed each other to land World titles on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Murray faces WBO World Super-Middleweight champion Arthur Abraham at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany in his fourth World title fight while Crolla meets Darleys Perez in a rematch for the WBA World Lightweight title at the Manchester Arena TOMORROW, November 21, live on AWE–A WEALTH OF ENTERTAINMENT beginning at 3 pm ET / 12 noon PT

St. Helens favourite Murray had three cracks at the top prize at Middleweight, with a controversial draw in Germany against Felix Sturm in 2011, a loss to Sergio Martinez in Argentina in 2013 after flooring the hometown favourite and a brave challenge to Gennady Golovkin in February for World titles. The 33 year old is the second Brit to challenge Abraham for his WBO strap this year after Crolla’s gym-mate Paul Smith met him in February in a rematch, and ‘Million Dollar’ thinks Murray will dethrone ‘King Arthur’.

“Martin can definitely take the title from Arthur on Saturday,” said Crolla. “Paul took him the distance twice and was on the receiving end of some harsh judging in the first meeting, and we all saw chinks in his armour in those fight that I am sure Martin can exploit.

“He’s come so close before against Sturm and Martinez but it feels like the right time for him to get the belt around his waist, and it will be a great boost if I am walking to the ring knowing that Martin has just beaten Arthur.”

Crolla was on the end of a tough call in his first meeting with Perez in July, when his he was only handed a draw for his heroic effort against the Colombian champion, who seemed to have handed the title to the Manchester favourite with points deductions in the 11th and 12th rounds for low blows.

Murray thought the 28 year old deserved the nod that night, but says that Crolla will go the extra yard tomorrow having almost got over the line in July.

“I thought Anthony won the first fight with Perez,” said Murray. “He was tremendous and got robbed really. I know how that feels and although you never truly get over it, you do realise when you go that close that you belong at elite level – and that will give Anthony massive belief.

“I spoke to him in Liverpool last week and he was so confident that he will do the business, and I think that we’re going to have two new World champions in Britain on Saturday.”

Boxing fans can enjoy this amazing card on AWE available on AT&T U-Verse, ch 147 and 1147 in HD, Verizon FiOS TV, ch 169 and 669 in HD, and numerous regional cable providers across the nation. Please check www.awetv.com for boxing updates.

MURRAY REFLECTS ON PRIZEFIGHTER AHEAD OF WORLD TITLE TILT

Martin Murray
Martin Murray challenges Arthur Abraham for the WBO World Super-Middleweight title tomorrow in Hannover, live on Sky Sports – seven years after he claimed the Prizefighter Middleweight’s trophy.

Murray’s success that night came at York Hall in Bethnal Green, a far cry from the luxurious surroundings of the TUI Arena that will play host to his fourth World title shot against ‘King Arthur’.

But the St Helens star says much of his success in the ring can be traced back to November 22, 2008, where he beat Joe Rea and Danny Butler before edging out Cello Renda in a bruising final in east London.

“I was 9-0 and not at all well-known going into that night,” said Murray. “I boxed well and then the final against Cello was a classic, and from that night onwards my profile grew with it being live on Sky Sports.

“I’ve got great and fond memories of that night – especially the money! It did me the world of good and it’s mad to think that since then I’ve had three World title fights and I’m ready for my fourth.

“I’ve poured every ounce into the camp for this one and I sound like a broken record, but this feels like the right time for me and crucially, the right weight for me.”

The Super-Middleweight division remains one of the most attractive on the World stage and Britain is enjoying a purple-patch for talent right now. James DeGale MBE defends his IBF crown in Canada next weekend while Callum Smith and George Groves are massive fights out there in 2016. Murray admits that those fights appeal to him, but he has to get the crown first, and failure to do so could even see him consider his future.

“James has mentioned the fight but he cannot look past Bute and I cannot look past Abraham,” said Murray. “I know I can win this and if I do, there are big fights out there for me, if I don’t though, it could spell the end of my career – just because I really feel that this is my chance to finally get my hands on a World title.

“I would have to weigh things up if I don’t get the decision, so a lot rests on what happens tomorrow. I am not ready to retire, I think I am only just getting into my prime, so that is another motivation to get the win. This is the fourth one and the most confident I am of winning. I would be more gutted to not win this one than the others. I really feel that I am going to win and I have banked on that.”

Abraham vs. Murray final press conference – quotes and pictures

Abraham Murray Pr 1
San Diego, CA – November, 18 2015 -Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) insists he has left no stone unturned in preparation for his WBO World Super Middleweight Championship contest with Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) This Saturday, November 21, live on AWE–A WEALTH OF ENTERTAINMENT

The fight will be part of a split-site championship doubleheader that will also pit WBA Lightweight champion Darleys Perez defending his title against Anthony Crolla from Manchester, England beginning at 3 PM ET / 12 Noon PT

Speaking at today’s final pre-fight press conference, ‘King Arthur’ detailed his ‘brutal’ training camp and declared himself ready to beat the British challenger.

”This has been one of the toughest camps of my career,” said Abraham. ”My coach Ulli Wegner and his assistant Georg Bramowski have pushed me to my limits. It’s been brutal at times, but it will all be worthwhile when my hand is raised on Saturday night. Martin is a good boxer and I expect him to give me a hard fight, but there is no way he is taking my title!”

Murray, who is contesting his first title at 168 lbs following three valiant attempts at middleweight, shares the Champion’s confidence and has vowed not to leave Germany without Abraham’s WBO belt.

”We’ve been studying Arthur carefully and I believe I’ve got him beat,” said the 33 year-old from St Helens. ”He is a great fighter, but he’s not changed his style in years, and in my opinion, he’s not evolved. It’s going to be a tough fight but I know it’s well within me to win. I won’t be leaving Germany without the title!”

”This is a real 50-50 fight,” said promoter Kalle Sauerland. ”And I think it will be Arthur’s toughest test for many years. However, he has never shied away from a challenge, and against Murray, I expect Arthur to prove why he is the number one fighter in the super middleweight division.”

Another man under no illusion of the danger Murray poses is Abraham’s long-time coach and mentor Ulli Wegner, who will be celebrating his 100th World title fight on Saturday night. ”For Arthur and I, a unification bout is the common goal,” said the 73 year-old. ”But first he must get past Murray, which will be no easy task!”

Abraham motivated for Murray challenge

arthur_abraham
San Diego, CA – November, 18 2015 –.Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) aims to extend his domination of the 168 lbs division with a victory over Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) This Saturday, November 21, live on AWE–A WEALTH OF ENTERTAINMENT

The fight will be part of a split-site championship doubleheader that will also pit WBA Lightweight champion Darleys Perez defending his title against Anthony Crolla from Manchester, England beginning at 3 PM ET / 12 Noon PT

The 35 year-old has rolled back the years with impressive performances against
Nikola Sjekloca, Paul Smith and Robert Stieglitz since reclaiming his WBO World title in March 2014, and as he prepares for a fifth successive defence, ‘King Arthur’ reveals his reasons for selecting the British boxer as a voluntary challenger.

”At this stage of my career, I don’t want to fight any easy opponents,” says Abraham. ”I need fights that will motivate me, and that is why we chose Murray.

”He has challenged for World titles before and against Sturm, Martinez and especially Golovkin he has already boxed three World-class opponents. I know this is a dangerous fight and that has given me the motivation I need.”

If further motivation is needed, it comes from the Champion’s desire to unify the super middleweight division before calling time on his already illustrious career.

”When I first started boxing my dream was to become World Champion,” said Abraham. ”I achieved this in 2005, winning the IBF middleweight title and then defended it ten times before moving up to super middleweight and becoming a two-weight World Champion.

”Now, my dream is to unify the division. I believe this would be my greatest achievement in this sport and that is what still drives me on as a boxer.”

In order to keep this dream alive, Abraham knows he must overcome the ‘tough’ challenger Murray when the super middleweights collide in Hannover.

”If I lose this fight, my dream will be shattered,” explains the boxer from Berlin. ”I cannot not let this happen. It will be a tough fight, but in my current condition, Murray can’t hold a candle to me, and on Saturday night, there will be only one outcome!”

Jumah faces Leone on Abraham-Murray undercard

Deion Jumah (5-0, 3 KOs) is back in action on Saturday night against Italy’s Fabrizio Leone (6-7, 5 KOs) on the undercard of Arthur Abraham’s WBO World Super Middleweight title defence against Martin Murray at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.

The 26 year-old returns following the third-round stoppage of Karel Horejsek in June, and having spent the past five months sharpening his skills in the gym, the Adam Booth trained fighter is looking forward to showcasing his improvements.

‘’I can’t wait to get back in there and do the business,’’ exclaims the British light heavyweight. ‘’Since my last fight, I’ve been keeping busy in the gym and doing a lot of work with Adam to become a more calculated boxer-puncher, and now, I’m looking forward to putting that into practice.

‘’I’m not worried about my opponent. I’ll just be thinking about myself – picking my shots, staying as poised as possible and getting that win. It’s a big show, so it will be great exposure for me, and intend to show everyone what I can do.’’

The two-time ABA Champion has also been enjoying World-class sparring sessions with gym-mate Andy Lee ahead of the WBO World Champion’s upcoming title defence.

‘’I’m fortunate to be surrounded by so many good fighters in the gym,’’ says Jumah. ‘’Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of sparring with Andy Lee before his fight with Billy Joe Saunders. I’m a southpaw like Saunders so it’s good work for both of us. It’s kept me sharp and I’m sure I’ll feel the benefit in the ring.’’

The WBO World Super Middleweight Championship fight between Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray will be broadcast live on Sat.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK. Tickets are available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de.

MURRAY: THE TIMING IS RIGHT TO BREAK WORLD TITLE JINX

Martin Murray
Martin Murray says that he’ll end his wait to become World champion when he challenges Arthur Abraham for the WBO World Super-Middleweight title at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Murray takes on Abraham in his fourth World title clash having controversially drawn against Felix Sturm in Mannheim in 2011, a loss to Sergio Martinez in Argentina in 2013 after flooring the hometown favourite and a brave challenge to Gennady Golovkin in February for World titles.

Crucially for Murray, those fights were down at Middleweight, but now he is up at 168lbs for his latest crack at the top prize, and the 33 year old believes everything will finally fall into place on Saturday night.

“Abraham is a great champion and I’m expecting a tough fight but I just feel that the timing is right for me,’’ said Murray. “I think my first World title fight against Sturm may have come a little bit too early. I jumped straight from domestic to World level, so even though there was an argument to say I won that fight, I think it came to soon for me.

“Against Martinez, I knew I could win but going into the fight there were still some doubts. Whereas this time, I know I have it within me to win. I’ve got the ring experience, I’ve got the knowhow, and I really feel, despite being in Germany, I’m going to get a fair crack of the whip.

“We’ve been studying Arthur carefully and I believe I’ve got him beat. He is a great fighter, but he’s not changed his style in years, and in my opinion, he’s not evolved. It’s going to be a tough fight but I know it is well within me to win. I won’t be leaving Germany without the title.”

Abraham defends his title for the third time this year and the second time against an Englishman having defeated Paul Smith on points in their rematch in February, and the champion has put in the hard graft to ensure he holds onto the title to target a unification bout in 2016.

“This has been one of the toughest camps of my career,” said Abraham. “My coach Ulli Wegner and his assistant Georg Bramowski have pushed me to my limits. It’s been brutal at times, but it will all be worthwhile when my hand is raised on Saturday night. Martin is a good boxer and I expect him to give me a hard fight, but there is no way he is taking my title.”

Murray’s challenge against Abraham is part of a World title double-header on Sky Sports, as Anthony Crolla welcomes Darleys Perez back to Manchester for their rematch for the Colombian’s WBA World Lightweight title.

Murray believes his time has come to be crowned World Champion

Martin Murray
San Diego, CA – November, 17 2015 -Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) believes the time has come for him to be crowned World Champion as he prepares for his fourth World title tilt against WBO World Super Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany., This Saturday, November 21, live on AWE–A WEALTH OF ENTERTAINMENT

The fight will be part of a split-site championship doubleheader that will also pit WBA Lightweight champion Darleys Perez defending his title against Anthony Crolla from Manchester, England beginning at 3 PM ET / 12 Noon PT

The St. Helens man is unlucky not to have already claimed World honours having been held to draw by Felix Sturm in 2011 and finding himself on the wrong end of a continuous points decision to Sergio Martinez in 2013.

A brave performance against Gennady Golovkin followed in 2015, but was not enough to capture the Kazakh’s middleweight titles. Now, the former British and Commonwealth Champion believes the ‘time is right’ as he intends to draw on past experience to dethrone the German Champion.

”Abraham is a great champion and I’m expecting a tough fight but I just feel that the timing is right for me now,” reveals Murray. ”I think my first World title fight against Sturm may have come a little bit too early. I jumped straight from domestic to world level, so even though there was an argument to say I won that fight, I think it came to soon for me.

”Against Martinez, I knew I could win but going into the fight there were still some doubts. Whereas this time, I know I have it within me to win. I’ve got the ring experience, I’ve got the know-how, and I really feel, despite being in Germany, I’m going to get a fair crack of the whip.”

Murray, who has recorded three wins inside the distance since moving up to super middleweight, says he is expecting the ‘best Arthur Abraham’ having been impressed with the Champion’s recent performances.

”Arthur has looked great in his last two performances,” said the 33 year-old. ”I think I’ll be facing the best Arthur Abraham on Saturday night. He may of overlooked Paul Smith a little bit in their first fight, but I don’t think he is going to overlook me. He knows this is a massive fight for him and a risky fight, so I’m sure he’s going to turn up in top condition.”

Murray training with rugby rivals Wigan Warriors to prepare for Abraham clash

Martin Murray
Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) is leaving nothing to chance in preparation for his WBO World Super Middleweight title challenge against Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.

To ensure he is in peak physical condition, the 33 year-old rugby fanatic has set aside his loyalty to local team St. Helens to join bitter rivals Wigan Warriors for a series of strength and conditioning sessions.

‘’My strength and conditioning coach Mark Bitcon works with the Wigan Warriors so I’ve been going over there a couple of times a week and to do a session with them,’’ reveals Murray. ‘’The guys know I’m a big St. Helens fans so obviously there is a bit of banter, but despite the rivalry, the coaching staff and everybody involved with the club are more than happy to help.’’

Ahead of his fourth World title tilt, the former British and Commonwealth Champion believes these grueling sessions could prove decisive in his quest to wrestle the WBO crown from ‘King’ Arthur.

‘’I’ve had a few different strength and conditioning coaches since I started my career, but the work I’m doing now with Mark and the Warriors is by far the best,’’ says Murray. ‘’I’m getting some great work, and with his help, I’ll be ready to take the title from Arthur!’’

On hearing of his opponent’s new training regime, the champion’s only concern is that the British boxer comes through these sessions unscathed. ‘’I know rugby is a very physical game so I hope Martin doesn’t pick up any injuries as I don’t want him to have any excuses when I beat him on November 21,’’ said Abraham.

The WBO World Super Middleweight Championship fight between Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray will be broadcast live on Sat.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK. Tickets are available online via tickethall.de and eventim.de.

Abraham’s World title preparations bolstered by return of star coach

Arthur Abraham
Training is underway for Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) as he prepares for his WBO World Super Middleweight Championship contest with Britain’s Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.

As the Berlin-boxer readies himself for a fifth successive defence of his WBO strap, the former 160 lbs ‘King’ turned super middleweight supremo has been bolstered by the return of his long-standing coach and mentor Ulli Wegner who had been sidelined with an Achilles injury.

‘’It’s great to have Mr. Wegner back,’’ exclaims Abraham. ‘’We had been talking everyday on the phone and discussing my progress but there is no substitute to having him there in person giving me direct feedback. I rely on his input and with him in my corner there is no way I can lose.’’

The ever-critical Wegner has already set about changing the 35 year-old’s training regime. Removing any distractions by taking his protégé from the bustling Max-Schmeling-Gym in Berlin to a secluded training camp in Kienbaum’s Olympic Centre.

‘’Arthur must focus all his energy and attention on this fight or risk losing his World title,’’ said the star coach. ‘’And that is why we need to complete isolation. My job is to ensure he is in top championship condition, and currently his fitness is not where I would like it to be. Now, he must step up his efforts or prepare for defeat.’’

Abraham, used to the 73 year-old’s exacting standards, offers a simple reply when faced with his coach’s criticism, admitting: ‘’Mr Wegner is always right!’’
