RYAN GARCIA, UNDEFEATED LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“Boxing is part of me. I have been doing this since I was seven years old and I am good at it. I know that I still have a lot left to give to the sport. I feel pretty safe in the ring. I am not taking a beating. Even in sparring I don’t feel like I am getting hit with a lot of shots. And fortunately, I am healthy enough to continue to fight at a high level and give fans some amazing fights. I feel great and I am going to make every day count.
“I miss everything about boxing: the competition, the contact, destroying someone. Seeing the shot; knowing where it is going to land; knowing that the timing is just perfect. I just love to fight and just be better than the person in front of me.
“Tagoe is a veteran, he is going to try his best to keep me off of him, to survive. His goal, I think, is to not get knocked out. I know he has been saying that facing me will be easy. But I can say one thing, my job is to not make his life easy in that ring. Fans should be ready to see me give this fight everything I got. If he can take a shot, it will be a good fight. If he can’t, he will be out of there very quick.
“This is going to be an exciting fight from me. You can expect timing and explosion. I don’t look to toss someone around for a couple of rounds. If I land a good one, you can expect that I am going to be looking to take someone out.”
EMMANUEL “THE GAMEBOY” TAGOE, LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“I think I have the tools to knockout Ryan on Saturday. This fight is an opportunity for me to showcase myself.
“I came here to knock out Ryan Garcia. I think he’s good but he’s not my size. I can’t wait for Saturday. I’m going to show everyone.
“Training camp was good and I’m happy with this fight. Everyone is going to like this fight. I come to win with a knockout or no knockout. I waited for this opportunity. To all of Garcia’s fans watch out for Saturday.”
“KING” GABRIEL ROSADO, WBA CONTINENTAL AMERICAS SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I’m excited to get back in the ring and do my thing. Yeah I got to be part of his father’s training camp when he went against margarito. But at the end of the day it’s business, we’re in the hurt business. This is what we do. We’re going to do our thing and I’m going for the knockout. It’s just perseverance. Not listening to what people have to say.”
SHANE MOSLEY JR, SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“It’s great to have all these eyes on me. I’m happy to be on this card. Being the co-main event is great. Me and Ryan used to see each other in the amateurs. I can’t wait to get in the ring with Gave Rosado. I’m definitely going to show everyone what I’m made of. I’m really focused.”
MARLEN ESPARZA, WBC FLYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION:
“It’s amazing. Being like 3 hours from my home. I prepared like I usually do. I was already excited to get the ring with another champion. When it was brought to my attention that it was possible with the ring belt it really solidified what I’ve always wanted to do. I’m going to put on a show, it’s going to be a good night.”
NAOKO FUJIOKA, WBA FLYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION:
“I’m so excited for this fight. It doesn’t matter to me that I’m in her hometown. I wanted to get a bigger name. I am here to represent Japan.”
AZAT HOVHANNISYAN, FEATHERWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“Yes I was with Robert Garcia before. I learned a lot of good things from him. I feel good, I’m calm. I want to fight anyone at 122. I’m ready for any fighter.”

I want to apologize to everyone. I want to apologize to all my fans. It was a mistake on my behalf. No excuses, but I’ll be back. Rakhimov threw a lot of combinations. But a lot of them landed on the gloves. I felt I threw more shots and landed more body punches. I thought I should have won the fight.”
“I did everything I was supposed to do,” said Shavkat Rakhimov. “Victory was on my side. I feel I won the fight. There were a few mistakes, and we need to work on it. I did everything that was possible. There were a few mistakes, but I will work on that. There is no perfect boxer, and I hope to gain more American fans.”

Each fight is different, and I understand that. I knew Teixeia very well going into this fight. He is very strong, and he has a lot of heart. He is a great person. This was one of the greatest wins of my career. Not anyone can be a world champion, and I was able to do it twice. So I am very happy.”

Estrada stops Abaniel after four
Seniesa Estrada remained perfect by stopping Gretchen Abaniel after four rounds of their scheduled 10-round light flyweight fight at The Avalon Hollywood in Hollywood, California.

Estrada, 107 lbs of East Los Angeles, CA is 17-0 with seven knockouts, Abaniel, 108 lbs of Palawan, PHL is 18-11.
“Everyone knows about the rivalry between me and Marlen Esparza,” said Seniesa Estrada. “Eventually, that fight is going to happen. She can get it any time. For now, I want a title shot. I want to face Yesenia Gomez. Let’s make it happen in September.”
Former world title challenger Azat Hovhannisyan stopped Glenn Porras in round four of a scheduled 10-round super bantamweight fight.
It was a toe-to-toe fight that saw Hovhannisyan land some hard shots

“I had a great preparation,” said Azat Hovhannisyan. “I sparred very hard and everything went well in camp. I’m boxing more in my fights, but I also bring a lot of action. I want T.J. Doheny, and then I want Danny Roman, Rey Vargas [again] and Emanuel Navarrete.”

“That’s what I was trying to do, get a spectacular knockout,” said Carlos Caraballo. “I have the power to do it, and that’s what I trained for at the gym. I noticed he wasn’t really attacking in the second round. We take things round by round, so I saw the opportunity and took it.”
Cesar Valenzuela won a eight-round unanimous decision over Christian Gonzalez in a lightweight fight.
Scores were 79-73 on all cards for Valenzuela, 133.6 lbs of Phoenix who is now 15-6-1. Gonzalez, 134.6 lbs of Buena Park, CA is 19-4.
“We knew he was a hard hitter,” said Cesar Valenzeula. “We knew he would come in throwing wild punches and that he had no defense, footwork or head movement. So, I used my distance, jab, and footwork. I also was able to get him with my straight right hand, which he could not see coming.”
Bektemir Melikuziev made a successful pro debut by stopping Martin Rios in a light heavyweight bout.
Melikuziev dropped Rios with a hard left to the body that sent him down for the 10 count 1:39 for Melikuziev, 173 lbs of Indio, CA who is 1-0 with one knockout. Rios, 166.6 lbs of La Pampa, ARG is 23-20-4.
“What happened is what always happens,” said Bektemir Melikzuiev.“I wanted the toughest challenge out there, and I went in there and took care of business. Now it’s time for me to keep going and stay busy.”

HBO SPORTS PRESENTS A DOUBLE BILL OF WORLD TITLE ACTION WHEN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: SADAM ALI VS. JAIME MUNGUIA AND REY VARGAS VS. AZAT HOVHANNISYAN, IS SEEN SATURDAY, MAY 12
HBO Sports presents another WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING card from the Empire State, this time visiting Verona, for SADAM ALI VS. JAIME MUNGUIA AND REY VARGAS VS. AZAT HOVHANNISYAN, to be seen SATURDAY, MAY 12 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from Turning Stone Resort Casino, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team will call the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.
The main event is a junior middleweight title showdown, as Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) defends his crown against rising challenger Jaime Munguia (28-0, 24 KOs) from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, in a scheduled 12-round bout. The 29-year-old Ali played spoiler at boxing legend Miguel Cotto’s retirement fight last December, and now looks to build his own legacy.
Munguia jumped at the chance to compete for a 154-pound title belt when Liam Smith withdrew due to illness. Though just 21, the undefeated fighter has started to make noise in the deep, talented junior middleweight division.
The opening bout features undefeated Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs) from Otumba, Mexico taking on Azat Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) from Yerevan, Armenia, now living in Los Angeles, in a scheduled 12-round super bantamweight title fight.
The undefeated Vargas boasts a 71% knockout-to-win ratio and will be making the third defense of his 122-pound belt. He recorded three wins in 2017, most recently besting the previously undefeated Oscar Negrete on HBO. Hoyhannisyan, who has a 70% knockout-to-win ratio, is on an eight-bout winning streak after a majority decision loss in 2014; his only other loss came in his four-round pro debut in 2011. Known as “Crazy A,” he won all three of his bouts last year, and scored a sixth-round knockout of Ronny Rios on March 9.

DANGEROUS UNDEFEATED CONTENDER JAIME MUNGUIA STEPS IN TO CHALLENGE SADAM ‘WORLD KID’ ALI FOR WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD TITLE
VERONA, N.Y. (April 30, 2018): Jaime Munguia (28-0, 24 KOs), the dangerous undefeated 154-pound contender of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, will step in to challenge Sadam “World Kid” Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y. in a 12-round battle for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title on May 12 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The co-main event will feature Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs) and Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) in a 12-round clash for the WBC Super Bantamweight World Title. The doubleheader will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Munguia will replace Liam “Beefy” Smith, who was forced to pull out of the fight against Ali due to an illness. This dangerous 21-year-old puncher has ended 24 of his fights by stunning knockout and will look to take advantage of his first world title opportunity as he returns to the United States for only the second time in his career.
“I want to thank everyone involved, but above all I thank Sadam Ali for the opportunity,” said Jaime Munguia. “Though all the criticisms made about me have motivated me to be where I am, I will show that they were all wrong. I will crown myself as world champion on May 12.”
Ali, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, was unfazed by the change. The 29-year-old champion silenced all doubters by defeating Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision in Dec. 2017 to win the title he currently holds. Ali will look to defend his title in a dangerous battle against a young contender.
“I’m determined to defend my title for the first time on May 12,” said Sadam Ali. “It doesn’t matter who, and it doesn’t matter how. Jaime Munguia will have the opportunity of a lifetime when he fights me, but I’m walking away with my hand up in victory and the belt around my waist.”
Ali vs. Munguia is a 12-round fight for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions. Vargas vs. Hovhannisyan is a 12-round battle for the WBC Super Bantamweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Promociones del Pueblo. RYAN ‘THE FLASH’ GARCIA AND AZAT ‘CRAZY A’ HOVHANNISYAN LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES,
LOS ANGELES (April 26, 2018): Ryan “The Flash” Garcia (14-0, 13 KO) hosted a media workout today at Legendz Boxing Gym in Norwalk, Calif. ahead of a very special May 4 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Garcia will kick off the Cinco de Mayo festivities as he faces seasoned Puerto Rican contender Jayson “La Maravilla” Velez (26-4-1, 18 KOs) in the 10-round main event in the super featherweight division. ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes will air the fights beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT, and stream live on ESPN3 starting at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
Undercard fighters of the Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN show were also in attendance. Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (12-0, 2 KOs), who will return in an eight-round flyweight fight. Marvin Cabrera (7-0, 5 KOs) will participate in an eight-round super welterweight clash. Garden City, Kansas’ Richard “Kansas Kid” Acevedo (1-0, 1 KO) will fight in a four-round super welterweight battle.
Here’s what today’s participants had to say at the media workout:
RYAN “THE FLASH” GARCIA, Current Junior NABF Super
Featherweight Champion:
“This is going to be an amazing event. This will be another step in my legacy, and I look forward to a world-changing fight. It doesn’t matter how much experience Jayson Velez has. I’m going to fight the way I fight, whether he fought for a world title or not. I’m going to see how he fights, and I’ll know what to do.”
“I’ve noticed that he drops his hand a lot, so I’m going to feint to the body and catch him with my left hook. This fight is going to end in the fourth round. I may end it early, but I say it’ll end in the fourth round. The knockout doesn’t have to be with one punch because I also know how to end fights with a barrage and force the referee to end it. These two belts [NABF and NABO Super Featherweight Titles] will be on the line, and I know the the next fight will be for a world title.”
SENIESA “SUPER BAD” ESTRADA, Super Flyweight Prospect:
“I train how I always do, no matter who my opponent is. Of course, it is helpful to know who I am fighting from the beginning, but either way I’m going to be very much prepared. It feels great to have young girls following me. When I grew up, I didn’t have many girls in boxing to look up to. I looked up to Roy Jones, Jr. So I’m happy girls are looking up to me.”
MARVIN CABRERA, Super Welterweight Prospect:
“I know this is an experienced opponent. We’re going to take advantage of this opportunity to fight at StubHub, and we’ll do what we love, which is fighting. Hopefully by the end of the year I can have my first 10-round fight.”
RICHARD “KANSAS KID” ACEVEDO, Welterweight Prospect:
“I’m happy to be working with my new trainers, the Saucedo Brothers, at Westside Boxing Club. We’re great friends outside the gym, but in the gym, they are my coaches and there is a lot of respect. I’m excited about fighting on a Golden Boy card. I’ll be going in with everything, and if the knockout comes, it comes.”
(ABOVE: Azat Hovhannisyan talks to the media ahead of his fight against Rey Vargas for the WBC Super Bantamweight World Title on May 12 and televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing)
Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) also participated in the media workout today. Hovhannisyan will challenge Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs) for the WBC Super Bantamweight Title in the co-main event of spectacular card at Turning Stone Resort Casino on Saturday, May 12. The event is chief support to the 12-round co-main event to Sadam “World Kid” Ali andLiam “Beefy” Smith for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship. The doubleheader will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
AZAT “CRAZY A” HOVHANNISYAN, WBC Continental Americas Super Bantamweight Champion:
“Ever since I was a kid in Armenia, I was trained to fight with an exciting style. I had over 200 amateur fights, and that gave me a lot of experience. I lost my professional debut, but I knew I was better than that.”
“Rey Vargas is a dangerous opponent. He’s very tall and long, but beside that I don’t see anything else. I’ve sparred with a lot of tall opponents, so I know how they fight, and I’ll be more than ready to beat him. A win over Vargas would not only mean a lot for me and my family, but also for my entire country.”

REY VARGAS DISCUSSES TRAINING CAMP AHEAD OF THIRD DEFENSE OF WBC SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AGAINST AZAT ‘CRAZY A’ HOVHANNISYAN IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF ALI VS. SMITH
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (April 25, 2018): Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs), the undefeated world champion of Mexico City, Mexico, discussed his training camp ahead of the third defense of his WBC Super Bantamweight World Title against Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) in the 12-round co-main event to Sadam “World Kid” Ali and Liam “Beefy” Smith for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship on Saturday, May 12 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The doubleheader will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
The 27-year-old champion is currently in the strongest stage of sparring at the famed Romanza Gym in Mexico City, Mexico, under the supervision of Hall of Fame Trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristaín, along with Oscar Ortiz and Fabian and Emilio Ramirez. When he is not sparring or doing his daily conditioning training, Vargas trains out of his home gym in Otumba, Mexico, working offensive and defensive strategies according to the fight plan in mind.
Vargas had the following to say regarding his training camp and his future in the sport of boxing:
“Like always, we’re working on being better for the next fight. We’re also working on power and movement, but also on technique and strategy. Nevertheless, everything will be determined in the ring. He can study me all he wants. He could have the better corner, or I could have the better corner. At the end of the day, it will just be me and him, so the one who has prepared the best and has the better strategy will win.”
“We are just days away from this great fight against a great fighter [Hovhannisyan] who knows how to brawl and move about the ring. He can fight from both stances, so he’s not just any kind of fighter. We have to really take into account of who is stepping into the ring with us.”
“I know that Hovhannisyan has some experience fighting against Mexicans, but not all of us are the same. I know how to box and brawl. It’s going to be an interesting fight because he’s a brawler who knows how to move when he decides to. We also can’t take away the fact that he has a lot of power. It’s interesting that we have fought a similar opponent [Ronny Rios]. He knocked him out in six rounds, while I defeated him by unanimous decision. Because of that there may be some doubts, but I’ll make things clear May 12.”
“This fight is my first priority, and I hope to walk out of this fight well and with my hand raised in victory. I want the people to be happy from a great performance. But of course, I’m also thinking about possible unification fights in the future. I would love to unify titles with the current IBF champion Ryosuke Iwase, an opponent who really has caught my attention because he earned his title by knockout in foreign territory.”

REY VARGAS TO DEFEND WBC SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AGAINST EXPLOSIVE CONTENDER AZAT ‘CRAZY A’ HOVHANNISYAN IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF ALI VS. SMITH
VERONA, NY. (April 5, 2018): Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs), the undefeated world champion of Mexico City, Mexico, will make the third defense of his WBC Super Bantamweight World title against explosive Armenian contender Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) in the 12-round co-main event to Sadam “World Kid” Ali and Liam “Beefy” Smith for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship on Saturday, May 12 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The doubleheader will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Vargas is a 27-year-old world champion who brings a considerable height and reach advantage to every fight, which he has used to defeat all of his previous opponents. In February 2017, Vargas traveled to the United Kingdom to defeat Gavin McDonnell for the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight Title. For that fight, Vargas enlisted the help of Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, who has been training him ever since. Vargas then defended the title against Ronny Rios and Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete, and he’ll look to make his third defense against yet another tough contender in Hovhannisyan.
“I’m ready to make the third defense of my world title in what will be the next step of a historic career,” said Rey Vargas. “I’ve faced the best contenders since becoming world champion, and May 12 will not be the exception. Hovhannisyan is explosive and fast, but I will be prepared to win in exciting fashion to show that I’m the best super bantamweight in the world.”
Hovhannisyan is a fiery contender who has worked hard for his title opportunity. In September 2017, the 29-year-old fought with an injured right hand across 10 rounds of grueling action to win the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Bantamweight Title on the undercard of Linares vs. Campbell. Hovhannisyan then returned in March for his most impressive victory yet, a sixth-round technical knockout win against former world title challenger Ronny Rios. After defeating a common opponent of Vargas via a more impressive manner, Hovhannisyan will look to use his quick and aggressive style to earn his first world title.
“This is the most important fight of my career,” said Azat Hovhannisyan. “I’ve prepared for this fight my entire life. Vargas is a great champion and this will be a hard fight, but I will do anything it takes to win this title.”
“Both of these world championship fights on May 12 will provide action from the opening bell,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “Rey Vargas is the man to beat in the 122-pound division, and Azat Hovhanniysan has put in the work to potentially dethrone him.”
“Promociones del Pueblo and Golden Boy Promotions are dedicated to making great fights like this one,” said Oswaldo Kuchle, President of Promociones del Pueblo. “Rey Vargas has all the tools to walk away with the victory and will remove all doubts regarding his position as the best fighter in the 122-pound division.”
Ali vs. Smith is a 12-round fight for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Frank Warren. Vargas vs. Hovhannisyan is a 12-round battle for the WBC Super Bantamweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Promociones del Pueblo.
