LOS ANGELES, JUNE 1 – Donnie Nietes will add another chapter to his remarkable boxing story if he reclaims the WBO world junior bantamweight title next month.

The former four-weight world champion challenges Kazuto Ioka, in Tokyo, on July 13 for the belt he won in 2018, when defeating the Japanese star.

Nietes would relinquish the crown soon after the fight, allowing Ioka the chance to win the vacant title and almost four years on, the pair renew their rivalry at the Ota-City General Gymnasium in a fascinating clash of 115lbs greats.

The fight will be promoted by SANKYO presents LIFETIME BOXING FIGHTS 9.

Donnie Nietes, said: “This was the fight I wanted the most and I am incredibly eager to win back my world title.

“I have been in training since February for this fight but I really stepped up my levels when I knew it was confirmed.

“This rematch makes me excited and when I vacated the title in 2018 it was always in my mind that I would, one day, win it back. On July 13, that dream will become a reality.”

Sunny Edwards won a 12-round unanimous decision over Jayson Mama to retain the IBF Flyweight Title at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.

In round two, Edwards was cut on his forehead from an accidental headbutt.

Edwards registered a knockdown in round 10.

Edwards, 111 lbs of London, ENG won by scores of 118-109 twice and 117-110 and is now 17-0. Mama, 111 1/2 lbs of General Santos City, PHL is 16-1.

Nietes and Jimenez Battle to Draw

Former multi-division world champion Donnie Nietes and Norberto Jimenez battled to a 10-round draw in a super flyweight fight.

Each fighter won a card by a 96-94 score and a third card was 95-95.

Nietes, 115 lbs of the Philippines is 43-1-6. Jimenez of the Dominican Republic is 30-9-5/

Jalolov Destroys Calimeno in 46 Seconds

2021 Olympic Gold Medal winner Bakhodir Jalolov needed just 46 seconds to take out Julio Cesar Calimeno in an eight-round heavyweight bout.

Jalolov landed the first and only punch of the fight, a straight left that put Calimeno down for the 10-count.

Jalolov, 249 lbs of Uzbekistan is 9-0 with nine knockouts. Calimeno, 201 lbs of Colombia is 4-2.

de Bruijn Decisions Valtierra

Anthony de Bruijn won a six-round majority decision over Diego Valtierra in a super featherweight bout.

de Bruijn of the Netherlands won by scores of 59-55, 58-56 and 57-57 and is now 11-0-1. Valtierra of Spain is 6-5.

Carroll Stops Mesquita in 2

Former world title challenger Jono Carroll stopped Aeilo Mesquita in round two of a scheduled eight-round lightweight bout.

In round two, Carroll dropped Mesquita with a left hand. Moments later, a right hook sent Mesquita to a knee. Carroll sent Mesquita down for a 3rd and final time with a hard left to the head, and the fight was over at 2:27.

Carroll, 132.3 lbs of Dublin, IRE is 21-2-1 with six knockouts. Mesquita, 132.6 lbs of Brazil is 20-6-1.

The Filipino icon has had a tremendous career, with Nietes (43-1-5, 23 knockouts) holding world titles at super-flyweight, flyweight, light-flyweight and minimumweight.

Winning world titles in four different weight divisions is a staggering achievement that very few boxers in history have been able to accomplish, making Nietes one of the most decorated boxers in recent memory.

Nietes made his long-awaited return to the ring earlier this year, coming back from a near two-and-a-half year absence when he defeated Pablo Carrillo in Dubai, winning the vacant WBO International super-flyweight title in the process, and displaying the elite skills that have put him at the top of the sport for nearly two decades.

Jamel Herring stopped former two-division world champion Carl Frampton to retain the WBO Junior Lightweight world title at Caesars Palace Dubai.

Herring dominated the fight by boxing. He began to break the smaller Frampton down, and in round five. In round six, Herring dropped Frampton for a second time with a powerful left, Frampton tried to fight on, but began to take a battering and the fight was stopped at 1:40.

Herring of Coram, NY is 23-2 with 11 knockouts. Frampton of Belfast, IRE is 28-3.

Frampton announced his retirement after the fight.

“I’m just honored to share the ring with him, Herring said. “He’s a two-division world champion. He’s done great in the sport of boxing, and it was just an honor.
 
“It was an emotional rollercoaster just to get here. My last outing was not my best. People doubted me. They called me every name in the book, but even with the cut, I wasn’t going to give up. I wasn’t going to quit, and Carl Frampton is a tremendous champion. I’ve been a fan since day one. It’s tough to see any veteran of the sport go out like that.”

Frampton said, “I said before the fight I’d retire if I lost, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I want to just to dedicate my life to my family now. Boxing has been good to me. It’s also been bad to me, but the last few years with these boys have been the best years of my career. I just want to go home to my beautiful wife and kids, and that’s it.

“I just got beat by the better man. I really struggled to get inside on him.”

Nietes Decisions Carillo

Former four-division world champion Donnie Nietes won a 10-round unanimous decision over Pablo Carillo in a super flyweight fight.

Nietes landed 97 of 425 punches; Carrillo was 81 of 416.

Nietes, 114 1/2 lbs of The Philippines won by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 96-95 and is now 43-1-5. Carillo, 114 1/2 lbs is 14-3-1.

Keyshawn Davis stopped Richman Ashelley after round four of their scheduled six-round lightweight fight.

Davis is 2-0 with two knockouts. Ashelley is 10-2.

Fahad Al Bloushi won a four-round unanimous decision over Suraj in a super featherweight fight.

Bloushi is 4-1. Suraj is 2-2.

Tursymbay Kulakhmet stopped Heber Rondon in round one of their scheduled 10-round super welterweight bout.

Kulakhmet dropped Rondon twice with vicious hook, and the bout was stopped/

Kulakhmet is now 3-0 with two knockouts. Rondon is 20-1.

Donnie Nietes vacated his Super Flyweight title rather then rematch Aston Palicte, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“It took me a long time to think about this very difficult decision, but I feel that every fight for me at this stage of my career is crucial for my future,” Nietes wrote to WBO president Paco Valcarcel. “I have been long dreaming to have a career-defining fight. There is not much time for me in this sport at 37 years old.

“I would humbly inform you and the WBO that I have painfully decided to vacate my title, which has meant the world to me. I have held the WBO title for 10 years in three divisions. … I owe my successful career to the WBO.”

“His wish is to look for bigger fights to enhance his legacy and achieve his ultimate dream before hanging up his gloves,” Nietes promoter Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions wrote to Valcarcel. “A rematch with Aston Palicte is an emotional and mental challenge for him as he went through a very difficult stage after their first fight which ended in a controversial draw, and fighting a fellow Filipino again who is from the same region where he was born makes it even more difficult.”

LAS VEGAS (February 6, 2019) – The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered negotiations to begin for a rematch between reigning WBO Junior Bantamweight World Champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and No. 1-ranked, mandatory challenger “Mighty” Aston Palicte.

The WBO contacted the promoters for Nietes and Palicte, respectively, ALA Promotions and Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions, informing them that they have 15 days to reach an agreement regarding Nietes vs. Palicte II. If an agreement isn’t reached by the Feb. 19th deadline, the WBO will order a purse bid. The minimal bid is $100,000, but either promoter may request a purse bid procedure at any time during the negotiation process.

Nietes and Palicte fought to a controversial 12-round draw last September for the then vacant WBO junior bantamweight world title.

The WBO ordered No. 1 ranked Nietes to fight No. 3 rated Kazuito Ioka, on New Year’s Eve in China, for the vacant WBO junior bantamweight crown, in addition to No. 2 Palicte vs. unbeaten No. 4 Jose Martinez last Thursday night in Alpine, California, to determine Nietes’ mandatory challenger.

Nietes (42-1-5, 23 KOs) won by way of a 12-round split decision to capture his fourth world title in four different weight classes, while Palicte (25-2-1, 21 KOs) knocked out Martinez in the second round to set-up another All-Filipino showdown.

Palicte vs. Martinez headlined a show that was the first under a new agreement between Palicte’s promoter, RJJ Boxing, and UFC FIGHT PASS® to live stream up to 72 professional boxing events during the next three years.

ALPINE, Cal. (February 2, 2019) – The next great Filipino boxer, “Mighty” Aston Palicte, knocked out his previously unbeaten Puerto Rican opponent Jose “Chiquiro” Martinez in the second round of this past Thursday night’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Bantamweight World Title Eliminator, before a sold-out crowd in the Oak Ballroom at Viejas Casino and Resort in Alpine, California.

Palicte vs. Martinez, presented by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions in association with Miquel Cotto Promotions, was the inaugural event live-streamed on UFC Fight Pass® under a new agreement between Palicte’s promoter, RJJ Boxing, and FIGHT PASS, to live stream up to 72 professional boxing events over the next three years.

Palicte (25-2-1, 21 KOs), rated No. 1 by the WBO, took on No. 2- ranked Martinez, the reigning North American Boxing Organization (NABO) champion, in the main event to determine the mandatory challenger for WBO junior bantamweight title-holder Donnie Nietes, the four-division world champion, also from the Philippines.

Palicte was coming off a controversial 12-round split draw with Nietes last September for the then vacant WBO Junior bantamweight championship. Many at ringside felt that Palicte should have won the Filipino showdown and now he will have a richly deserved match.

“I knew Aston wanted to make a statement against Martinez and boy did he ever deliver,” RJJ Boxing CEO/Co-Founder Keith Veltre said. “What a way to start our series on UFC Fight Pass. From the opening fight to the main event there was nothing but action. Our matchmaker, Guy Taylor, has been delivering great content.”

After a standard feeling-out first round, Palicte exploded in the second round, as he walked through Martinez’ punches, showing no respect for his opponent’s power. Palicte dropped Martinez with an overhand right, repeating the decking moments later with the same punch. Martinez beat the count, but Palicte unleashed a flurry of unanswered punches, which resulted in the referee halting the action.

“I will start the process on making a deal with Nietes’ people,” Veltre added. “We’re looking forward to seeing Aston become world champion.”

In the co-featured event, a rare showdown between a pair of unbeaten prospects, Fort Worth, Texas featherweight Edward “Kid” Vasquez (6-0) out-boxed Brandon “2 Smooth” Cruz (6-1, 4 KOs), fighting out of nearby San Diego, in a back-and-forth fight for a key win by way of a sixth-round split decision.

Compton, CA junior featherweight Daniel Constantino (3-2-1, 1 KO) pulled off a mild upset in the FIGHT PASS opener, defeating San Diego’s Dilan “El Rey” Miranda (4-2, 3 KOs) by way of a six-round majority decision.

San Diego featherweight Jessica Juarez (2-0, 1 KO) won a four-round majority decision over Kailyn Hansen (1-3). Long a favorite among Mexican boxing fans, the 28-year-old Juan Francisco Estrada has built a reputation for facing the very best in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions. Fighting on February 24, 2018 at SUPERFLY 2, Estrada battled over 12-rounds in a fearless clash against defending WBC Super Flyweight World Champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai that had the huge crowd at the Forum on their feet cheering loudly for each fighter.

This will be Estrada’s third straight fight at a SUPERFLY event, having defeated former world champion Carlos Cuadras on September 9, 2017 in an epic battle at the series debut in Carson, CA.

Over the course of his illustrious 10-year career, Estrada has fought many other world champions and top contenders including Roman Gonzalez, Hernan Marquez, Giovanni Segura, Richie Mepranum and Milan Melindo.

Estrada won the WBO and WBA Flyweight World Titles on April 6, 2013 by defeating then world champion Brian Viloria, making five defenses before moving up to the super flyweight division.

The 32-year-old Felipe Orucuta has twice challenged for the WBO Super Flyweight World Title, losing in very close decisions to Omar Narvaez in Argentina. On May 25, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Orucuta was on the short end of a 12-round split decision. Fourteen months later, Orucuta returned to Argentina, this time losing a 12-round majority decision to Narvaez in Villa Maria, Argentina.

Currently the heavy handed Orucuta is on a five-bout winning streak; all by knockout including the fourth-round stoppage of Ricardo Roman on May 26, 2018 in Mexico City.

Among the other notable names on Orucuta’s winning side of the ledger are Roberto Castaneda, Fernando Lumacad, Julio David Roque Ler and Enrique Bernache.

The fight against Estrada will be Orucuta’s first in the United States since July 2008.

Fighting in the Los Angeles for the third time in recent years, Donnie Nietes thrilled the local Filipino fans with a seventh-round knockout over Juan Carlos Reveco at SUPERFLY 2 to earn the IBF Flyweight World Title, his tenth straight victory. Incredibly, Nietes has not suffered a loss since September 2004.

One of the Philippines most popular fighters over the last fifteen years, among the victories on Nietes’ ledger are wins over Edgar Sosa, Raul Garcia, Ramon Garcia Hirales, Manuel Vargas, Juan Alejo and Gilberto Parra.

The 27-year-old Aston Palicte will be fighting for the third time in the United States. In his U.S. debut, he won a 10-round decision over then undefeated Oscar Cantu on December 17, 2016 in Las Vegas. Following that up on December 8, 2017, the all-action Palicte knocked out Jose Alfredo Rodriguez in the fifth stanza in Round Rock, Texas.

The boxing pride of Osaka, Japan, Kazuto Ioka retired in November 2017 after making five defenses of his WBA Flyweight World Title earned by defeating then champion Juan Carlos Reveco on April 22, 2015.

Over the course of his nine-year multiple title reign, Ioka defeated world champions and top-rated contenders including Amnat Ruenroeng, Akira Yaegashi, Felix Alvarado, Ekkawit Songnui, Yutthana Kaensa and Nare Yianleang.

With all of his previous bouts coming in Japan, Ioka will be making his long-awaited United States debut at SUPERFLY 3.

A representative of his native Puerto Rico in the 2008 Olympics, the 32-year-old McWIlliams Arroyo made his Los Angeles debut at the Forum and on HBO by challenging then WBC Flyweight World Champion Roman Gonzalez on April 23, 2016. Although losing a 12-round decision, Arroyo would fight valiantly against the #1 Pound-for-Pound legend, earning the respect from the sold-out crowd.

Most recently Arroyo challenged former super flyweight world champion Carlos Cuadras at SUPERFLY 2, defeating the popular Mexican over ten rounds in an outstanding battle at the Forum that had the huge crowd cheering throughout.

Juan Francisco Estrasa, Donnie Nietes and Kazuto Ioka will appear on the Superfly 3 card on Saturday, September 8th at The Forum in Inglewood, California, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Ioka is a legend in Japan, a three-division world champion, so he would be a great addition to the show,” 360 Promotions Tom Loeffler said.

Another bout headed for the card is the Donnie Nietes’ opportunity to win a world title in a fourth weight division when he fights Filipino countryman Aston Palicte for a vacant 115-pound belt.

“That’s definitely one of the fights we want to have on Superfly 3,” Loeffler said. “Donnie had a great win on Superfly 2 so it makes sense to bring him back.”

“We have started negotiations for Donnie to be part of Superfly 3,” Aldeguer told ESPN. “We are hoping to finalize the deal with Tom and HBO for Sept 8 soonest.”

Donnie Nietes will take on Aston Palicte for a vacant super flyweight title on August 18th in the Philippines, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“The plan is on Aug. 18 in Cebu City,” said Nietes promoter Michael Aldeguer said. “However, contracts have not been signed yet as there are some clarifications that need to be cleared out. We hope to get things done within the week and when everything is signed we will make a formal announcement.

“Donnie is now in Los Angeles training for the Aug. 18 target date as this will be a new division for him. He will be back in the Philippines on July 2 to continue his training.”

Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes will mover up to super flyweight, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Today, I have made my decision to move up to 115 and vacate my IBF flyweight world title,” Nietes said. “This is the challenge I have been waiting for. To go up in weight is never easy, but this is my dream, to become a four-division world champion and to fight all the big names. This is a new challenge for me, and I am very happy that ALA Promotions has supported me to pursue my dream of a fourth division world title.”
