I had my plan. I knew it would take four rounds and then I went to work on him,” said Lomachenko. “Walters said he would do this and that he would do that throughout training camp, and in the end, he just quit. DONOVAN GEORGE SEEKS MONAGHAN REMATCH

CHICAGO — October 22, 2015 — For every loud proclamation that boxing is dead, that the demise of the sweet science is imminent, there is quietly whispered a story about a fighter who got up off the canvas to finish a fight, or an underdog who prevailed…it’s these stories that keep boxing fans captivated. One such story played out last Friday night in Brooklyn. Donovan George headlined TruTV’s Friday Night Knockout series, facing Seanie Monaghan in a bout scheduled for ten rounds.

In addition to noting Geoge’s incredible heart and resilience, most post-fight articles, as well as social media posts and tweets from fight night noted the ‘wincing’ that occurred every time George threw his right hand after it was broken during the second round. Begging the ringside doctor to allow him to continue, George took Monaghan’s onslaught through the remaining eight rounds, unable to mount a successful attack due to his broken hand. He wasn’t going to lay down and stop fighting, and he wasn’t going to be taken out of the fight.

The lead-up to fight night was punctuated with a promise from George to “clean out the Top Rank stable at 168 pounds,” first defeating Monaghan, and then setting his sights on Jesse Hart. In George’s eyes, the plan hasn’t changed. He and his promoter, Bobby Hitz, only hope that Monaghan has a desire to fight a healthy Donovan George.

“It was such a terrific fight that we hope Seanie will give us another shot,” said Promoter Bobby Hitz. “It is our hope that Seanie and Top Rank will do it. The fans want it, deserve it, and boxing needs it.”

Brad Solomon won a 10-round unanimous decision over Ray Serrano in a Welterweight bout.

BRAD SOLOMON AND RAY SERRANO READY TO TAKE CENTER STAGE IN 10-ROUND WELTERWEIGHT OPENING BOUT OF METROPCS FRIDAY NIGHT KNOCKOUT ON truTV®

Raymond Serrano
BROOKLYN (October 14 , 2015) — Undefeated contender BRAD “King” SOLOMON of Layfayette, LA and Philadelphia’s RAYMOND “Tito” SERRANO will step into the spotlight when they open the Friday, October 16 edition of the “MetroPC Friday Night Knockout on truTV” live telecast from Brooklyn’s AVIATOR Sports and Events Center (3159 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11234), beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The Solomon vs. Serrano 10-round welterweight rumble is the co-main event to the NABO light heavyweight championship fight between the Pride of Long Beach, New York, “Irish” SEANIE MONAGHAN, risking his undefeated record and Top-Five world rating, and Chicago knockout artist DONOVAN “Da Bomb” GEORGE. The live boxing series is presented by truTV and Top Rank®, and produced in association with HBO Sports®. Find truTV on your TV: http://trutvishere.com/

BRAD “King” SOLOMON (25-0, 9 KOs)

“I got in trouble when I was 17 and was sentenced to eight years in prison. But the DA said if I went in and got my GED and showed I was doing the right things he would reduce my sentence. So I joined the prison boxing team and began to fight. Some of the fights were against Lifers — who were never getting out of prison and who were the toughest fighters of all. They had nothing to lose. I was able to beat them.

“It was my mother who went to the D.A. to tell him I was doing good and was turning my life around. He came to see me and I was eventually let out of prison.

“I fought as an amateur and got a big win over future world champions Demetrius Andrade, Jessie Vargas and Danny Garcia.

“I’ve been waiting for a big network fight and now we have it on truTV. I know the importance of it. It will take me only a round or two to figure out Ray Serrano. I will box him, counter, mix it up, show my skills. This win will get me closer to what I really want – a fight on HBO”

RAY “Tito” SERRANO (21-2, 9 KOs)

“I’m a Philly fighter and a lot of Philly fighters have been on hard times, been in the ghetto, have no money. So when you walk into a Philly Gym you can find a hard fight real quick.

“My parents are from Puerto Rico. So when I fight I bring excitement, fans waving Puerto flags and me throwing hard punches.

“I knew who Brad Solomon was but not sure who he is now. Who has he really beaten? I’m trained by Buddy McGirt. Once Solomon feels my power on Friday night he’s going to change up his game plan real quick. I am smart in the ring with a good jab and with great punching power. It’s going to be ‘Tito Time’ on Friday night on truTV.”

THE OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN — WHICH IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC — WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY AT 3:00 P.M. AT THE PARK SPORTS BAR & GRILL (20 West Park Ave., Long Beach, NY 11561).

Monaghan & George Let It Rip. It’s truTV Fight Week – Brooklyn Style Baby!

Monaghan14_RZWM
BROOKLYN (October 13, 2015) — A Mets-Cubs showdown has nothing on the upcoming Brooklyn brawl between Long Beach, New York’s undefeated No. 4 world-rated light heavyweight contender “Irish” SEANIE MONAGHAN and Chicago’s DONOVAN “Da Bomb” GEORGE. Monaghan (25-0, 16 KOs) and George (25-4-2, 22 KOs) will be battling for the vacant North American Boxing Organization (NABO) light heavyweight title This Friday! “I want to wipe out Top Rank’s stable. It starts Friday with “Irish Stew” Seanie Monaghan, the easiest fight of the three Top Rank fighters I’m declaring war on” said George. “Then I want to get my hands on Jesse “Out of Work” Hart. I want to shut his trap. Philadelphia hasn’t been a fight town in decades and Hart is softer than a tub of Philadelphia cream cheese. Finally, I want Top Rank’s Mexican darling Gilberto “Zero” Ramirez — a fighter who lives up to his ring name.”

“I know the Cubs have been suffering from the Curse of the Billy Goat but I didn’t know the goat could talk until I heard Donovan George’s comments today,” retorted Monaghan. “Poor Donovan is in for a shock on Friday night. It’s fitting that his professional demise will be in Brooklyn because ‘Da Bomb’ will leave as ‘Da Bum’ after I knock him out. The only thing Donovan will be wiping out are the cobwebs I put in his head.”

I’m taking this fight with Donovan George very seriously. I’ve never trained harder,” said Monaghan. “Each of us has been in exciting fights and the winner moves on to big opportunities. We’re both coming to win so expect fireworks right away.”

”Monaghan is a very good fighter but I’m not coming to New York to lose. I’m coming back to Chicago with a victory and Monaghan’s scalp,” said George. “And when I get done with him I’m going back down the 168 pounds to take care of Jesse Hart but my first order of business is on October 16 on TRU TV it’s going to be a great night.”

“The only thing going the distance in the main event will be the ring entrances,” said Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank. “If the victory by knockout percentages for Seanie and Donovan are any indication, you can bet that the fans are in for an action-packed fight!”

One of the top boxing gate attractions in his native New York, Monaghan (25-0, 16 KOs) will be making his second appearance on truTV this year. He captured the WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight title in 2012 via an eighth-round TKO of Romaro Johnson. He has successfully defended the title five times during his three-year reign and has won six of his last eight bouts by way of knockout. His most recent title defense was on truTV, on May 8, where he won a 10-round unanimous decision over 2000 Brazilian Olympian Cleiton Conceição whose previous five victories had come by stoppages. Monaghan is currently world-rated No. 4 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 6 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 7 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 8 by the World Boxing Organization.

George (25-4-2, 22 KOs) has been a fan favorite in the Chicago area throughout his 11-year professional career. His aggressive style always makes for exciting fights, as his 88% victory by knockout ratio will attest. A former United States Boxing Association (USBA) super middleweight champion, all of George’s victories since 2013 have been by knockout.

Solomon (25-0, 9 KOs), a former WBA International welterweight champion, has a professional resume that boasts victories over Demetrius Hopkins, Anges Adjaho, Kenny Galarza, Pablo Vazquez and Ray Robinson. Together they had a combined record of 98-5-1 when he defeated them. In his last fight, Solomon won a 10-round split decision over Adrian Granados on May 2 on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Manny Pacquiao World Welterweight Championship.

The resurgent Serrano (21-2, 9 KOs) returns to the ring riding a three-bout winning streak with victories over Wilfredo Acuna, Jerome Rodriguez and Jeremy Bryan. The Rodriguez and Bryan bouts were only five weeks apart in the beginning of 2015.

DONOVAN GEORGE CALLS OUT JESSE HART, SENDS FRUIT BASKET DURING VICTORY PARTY

PHILADELPHIA — May 8, 2015 — “Enjoy the fruits of your labor…but I want to get you in the ring” was the message delivered via an Edible Arrangement bouquet to Jesse “Hard Work” Hart’s victory party on Thursday in Philadelphia. The sender? Donovan “The Bomb” George, who is itching to fight the newly crowned WBO NABO, USBA and NABF Junior Super Middleweight Champion.

The card read, in its entirety, “Congrats on your victory. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. When you’re done with this, I want to get you in the ring so I can beat your ass. Have a great day. -Donovan George.”

In an Instagram video posted by user @maleek_jackson, Hart munched on a piece of pineapple, and issued his response. “Donovan George, I’m enjoying this fruit just like I enjoyed whooping that ass….we all enjoying this fruit. We aren’t worried about nothing. When you’re ready, you know where to find me.”

Statement from Bobby Hitz on Rumors of Donovan George Withdrawing from Pascal Bout

“We highly dispute any reports that Donovan George pulled out of this fight. It’s true that he juts had twins, but as of late this afternoon, on our end, we are still a go. We were still negotiating the final details with Interbox. Since Bute pulled out of his fight, there’s been a lot of confusion as to how to elevate this fight to the main event. A lot of people were muddying the waters on how to make this thing happen, but at the end of the day Pierre Duc, his team and I put this fight back together. We have flight arrangements, and we are scheduled to arrive in Montreal on the 30th of November, and we intend on fulfilling that. These reports have been manufactured to try to add confusion to his training camp, but I can guarantee you this: Pascal better get ready, because Donovan’s coming to knock him out.”

“We’re excited to bring this great card to American fight fans,” ISM president Doug Jacobs said. “Bute and Pascal are still two of the top, most popular light heavyweights in the world. Romanian-born Bute has reached cult status in Quebec. He was the IBF super middleweight champion for five years from 2007 through 2012, when he lost to Carl Froch. During his aforementioned stretch of dominance (10-0, 8 KOs), Bute defeated world champions such as Alejandro Berrio, William Joppy and Glen Johnson, in addition to Librado Andrade (twice), Edison Miranda, Jessie Brinkley, Brian Magee and Jean-Paul Mendy.

Bute moved up to fight as a light heavyweight in 2012, winning a 12-round decision against previously unbeaten Denis Grachev for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) title, which he lost in his last fight (Jan. 18, 2014) by decision to his Montreal arch-rival Pascal.

Bolonti is a 35-year-old Argentinian whose last fight was a loss by 12-round decision to World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer last June in Germany. Bolonti, who has never been stopped as a professional boxer, is a former WBC Latino, South American and Argentina 175-pound division champion. His only two fights outside of Argentina, however, resulted in losses to Braehmer and in two years ago to former world lightweight contender Tony Bellow
in the United Kingdom by way of a 12-round decision.

Pascal has won three straight fights, including his last to Bute in this past January, since losing his WBC title to living legend Bernard Hopkins in 2011. The Haitian native who has lived in Montreal for many years is presently the No. 1 world rated light heavyweight contender by the WBC and World Boxing Organization (WBO), as well as ranked No. 3 by the IBF. He was the first to defeat multiple world champion Chad Dawson, as well as former world champions Silvio Branco and Adrian Diaconu (twice), during his outstanding 9 ½-year pro career in which he’s never been knocked out.

jean-pascal1
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal will take on Donovan George on December 6 at Bell Centre in Montreal as part of the Lucian Bute – Roberto Boloni undercard.

The signing “will place Pascal in a better position with regards to high-profile fight opportunities in the future,” said Interbox President Jean Bedard.

“Two big fights such as Bute versus Bolonti and Pascal versus George on the same card is a very rare occurrence in Quebec,” Bedard said.

“I always had a great respect for Jean Bedard. My company [Jean Pascal Promotions] is thrilled to be working alongside InterBox for my next four fights,” Pascal said.

“I am very happy to be fighting George,” Pascal said. “He took (reigning world champion) Adonis Stevenson to the 12th round and I plan to do better so that fight fans can use this as a measuring stick for an eventual fight between Stevenson and I.”

“I am coming to win and to shock Quebec,” George said. “I jumped on the fight versus Pascal the very minute it was proposed to me.”

“These are the two most popular fighters in Chicago and with our anticipated huge crowd, local fight fans should expect an excellent night of action,” said Bobby Hitz, now in his 25th year of promoting in Chicago. “With tickets starting at just $25.00, this is an excellent value for the sports fans dollar.”

“For decades Chicago fight fans have been proud of the toughness of its fighters. Donovan and Mike exemplify this toughness perfectly,” said Frank Mugnolo of Round 3 Productions.

Known internationally for his well earned “blood and guts” warrior reputation and celebratory back flip celebrations, world ranked contender George will face off against St. Paul, Minnesota veteran TROY LOWRY in an eight round, super middleweight clash while hot light heavyweight prospect Jimenez will look to stay undefeated against BRANDON “EL Cubanito” Gonzalez of San Diego, California in a scheduled six round tilt.

Just 29-years-old, George, 24-4-2 (21KO’s), will be looking to kick start his 2014 campaign while seeking his 25th professional victory. Long a fan favorite over his nine-year career, George has never lost in his native Chicago.

Fielding a record of 28-13-0 with seventeen knockouts, Lowry will also be making his 2014 debut.

The 26-year-old Jimenez, 13-0-0 (10KO’s), like George born and raised in Chicago, will look to stay on his already torrid pace for 2014, having already scored two knockouts. Donovan George return to the ring postponed to April 18

Chicago, IL (March 7, 2014) Super middleweight contender Donovan “DA BOMB” George will not be fighting tonight, MARCH 7 in Chicago as was previously announced by his co-promoters, Chicago’s Hitz Boxing and Round 3 Productions.

George was to have made his highly anticipated return to battle in the main event at the Horseshoe Casino presented FIGHT NIGHT at The Belvedere in Elk Grove Village, however the action-packed card will still take place.

“It’s very frustrating that we were unable to find a suitable opponent for Donovan to fight on Friday night” said Bobby Hitz, President of Hitz Boxing. “We had five different boxers lined up each of whom would have provided for an exciting, fan friendly bout but unfortunately the Illinois State Athletic Commission refused to allow any of them to face Donovan, thereby robbing the fans of seeing a terrific fight.”

Added Hitz, “The commission’s actions seem to be arbitrary in this case and were not fully articulated to me this week. In my 25 years of promoting in Chicago this has truly been one of the most trying periods
in putting a fight together.”

George will return to action in the Chicago area on Friday, April 18 at the next Hitz Boxing/Round 3 Productions event at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.

“Donovan is the most popular fighter in Chicago and while this has been a tough week for him we’re confident that he will return to the ring in fine form on April 18 and ready to put on a spectacular performance” said Frank Mugnolo of Round 3 Productions.

In Heavy Training for his Upcoming Fight, Don ‘Da Bomb’ George Takes Time out to Congratulate His Friend, Adonis Stevenson

Chicago-based middleweight contender Donovan “Da Bomb” George wishes to congratulate his friend and former opponent Adonis Stevenson for his WBC Light Heavyweight title-winning KO1 over Chad Dawson last Saturday.

George and Stevenson became friends while sparring at Detroit’s Kronk Gym, after the two met in a fight in October 2012 (won by Stevenson after 12 tough rounds).

“I’m very happy for Adonis,” said George (24-3-2, 21 KOs), who is currently in heavy preparations for his upcoming ESPN Friday Night Fights-televised 10-round co-main event against Caleb Truax on Friday, June 21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After absorbing Stevenson’s best shots, George says he wasn’t surprised by Dawson’s spectacular exit just 1:16 in the first round at the Bell Center in Montreal.

“He hits like a heavyweight. I was hurt for a month after our 12-round war. There aren’t many fighters who can take his punches and stay upright.”

George’s promoter, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing, says the Dawson fight not only made a statement about Stevenson and his abilities, but about Donovan George as well.

“This is only going to be his third fight at the weight class, but Donovan is a natural middleweight, always has been” said Margules, “and he took Stevenson’s power for 12 tough rounds and kept coming. Stevenson just crushed one of the world’s best 175-lb fighters with that power. So what does that say about the toughness of Don George? Here’s a middleweight who went to war and took everything a beast like Stevenson could throw and barely blinked. It says a lot about what Donovan brings to the table, especially now that he’s at middleweight and fighting much smaller guys. Not only is his punching power incredible for a middleweight, his chin is as well.”

George says that with every fight, he’s growing more and more comfortable shedding the extra eight pounds to make middleweight and is ready for anyone in the division, including Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“I’m unstoppable at this weight. Chavez Jr., let’s do this any time. Even at a catchweight if you want. Bring it on. If I can go 12 rounds with the light heavyweight champion of the world, one of the hardest punchers in boxing, I’m going to walk right through any middleweight.”

For his next fight, George says he will try and walk in his friend and now-world champion’s footsteps. “Just like Adonis did, I’m going to make a major statement on the 21st. I will be going for the spectacular knockout.”

George vs. Truax will be held on Friday, June 21, at the Minneapolis Convention Center and televised live on ESPN Friday Night Fights. It will be presented by Seconds Out Promotions and Warriors Boxing.

Tickets to Friday Night Fights at the Convention Center start at $35 and can be purchased through www.sofights.com.

In addition to George vs. Truax, seven more fights are scheduled in support of the 12-round main event featuring Cuba’s IBF #2-rated Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (18-0, 11 KO) taking on Thailand’s IBF #5-rated Fahsai “Mountain Boy” Sakkreerin (39-3-1, 21 KO).

An eight-round crosstown battle will highlight the night’s undercard, as St Paul’s Jeremy “Lights Out” McLaurin (10-5, 5 KOs) will face St Paul’s Tony “2Sharp” Lee (7-1, 3 KOs) for the vacant Minnesota State Lightweight Championship.

Local bragging rights will be on the line for these two local scrappers, so expect fireworks. McLaurin has been in with the better opposition in his career, while Lee has fewer losses.

Also scheduled is an eight-round junior middleweight scrap between “Sir” Charles Meier (7-2, 3 KOs) of Coon Rapids, MN and Tyler Hultin (5-1-2, 3 KOs) of Fergus Falls, MN and a four-round junior middleweight contest between Gavin Quinn (1-0) of Circle Pines, MN and Kenneth Glenn (2-0, 1 KOs) of Minneapolis.

Several fighters will make their professional boxing debuts that night, including a four-round junior middleweight match-up of pro debuters between LeWayne Hardiman of Las Vegas and Dustin Petron of Rosemount, MN; a four-round heavyweight bout featuring the pro debut of Pat Quinn from St Paul, MN against John Schimon (0-1) of Minneapolis; and a four-round lightweight tilt between Milwaukee’s pro debuting Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Erhorn (0-1) of Grand Rapids, MN.

All or Nothing for Don George: ‘If I Never Win a Title or Get Close, my Whole Career is a Bust.’

Chicago middleweight Donovan “Da Bomb” George says there will be more than a win or a loss on the line when he steps in the ring against former world title challenger David “The Destroyer” Lopez this Friday, March 22.

According to George, he must win or his boxing career has been a waste.

George (24-3-1, 21 KOs) will drop down to middleweight to face Lopez (41-13, 23 KOs) of Nogales, Mexico, in the 10-round middleweight main event, at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion and televised live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Presented by 8 Count Productions, Round 3 Productions and Warriors Boxing the night’s co-main event will pit former world champion Kermit “EL Asesino” Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KOs) dropping back down to welterweight to face Chicago slugger Adrian “EL Tigre” Granados (11-2-1, 7 KOs).

“If I never win a title or get close, my whole career is a bust,” explained George. “I’ve done some local things and some national things but I’m not going to brag to my kids about being a former USBA Champ. I want to be world champion. I want to leave a legacy in this sport.”

With every fibre of his being, George says he wants to wear a championship belt, so he’s taken the unusual step of dropping down in weight midway through his career.

“If I look back at my career if don’t want to wish I had done things differently. I’m going to do everything I possibly can, so I can look at myself in the mirror. Right now, I’m not content with what I’ve done. I feel like the last six years, I’ve been in the wrong weight class. I step up and lose. I don’t know if it’s because I’m too small, but we’re going to find out. Normally as a fighter is getting older they go up in weight, but I’m making the suicidal move to go down. If I want to be world champ I have to make sacrifices.”

In addition to his drop in weight, George travelled to Detroit to train at the Kronk Gym with Sugar Hill and spar with such notables as former opponent Adonis Stevenson and former heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev.

“I worked on a lot of the technical side with Sugar. He put in a lot of time and effort with me and I really appreciate it. If I can catch anybody I’ll hurt them, but first I have to hit them. That meant re-learning Boxing 101 and going back to the basics with Sugar. My dad has been my trainer my whole career and he learned to train by reading books. He’s brilliant to have been so successful with no tutelage at all, but Sugar has been able to show me some new things, technically. I’m going to try and show all the improvements I’ve made on Friday. I’m going to obviously fight smart and pick my shots and land my right hand, my best punch. I’m working on not telegraphing it. I hope I can set it up and land it. If I do, it will be an early night.”

George also says it’s “so far so good” with his experiment at middleweight.

“I have sparred some middleweights, and found that I did extremely well. I’m way too strong. I had a couple knockouts in the gym. I’m really excited to see how I do at 160 lbs.”

Lopez will be George’s third southpaw in the past three fights, a fact he isn’t thrilled with, but says after 29 pro fights, he has to take any and all comers from every side.

“I’ve got some tapes on him. I know he’s only lost once in nine years. There’s reason for that. He can fight. He’s a tough, tall southpaw from Mexico and he’ll bring it. He’s at his best at 154. Coming up nine pounds to fight me will make a big difference. I’ll be a lot stronger than him. I’ll be about 185 lbs. by fight night. I really respect the guy. Anyone with almost 60 pro fights, you have to. And when I look at his career, he didn’t get his first title shot until 34 years old. I can relate. I’ve been a pro almost nine years and haven’t come close. He doesn’t give up either. I respect that.”

Every fight is now make or break for Donovan George. Sacrificing and suffering to get down to a smaller weight class with one dream in mind. He is a man on a mission.

“What I’m doing is very difficult, but I’m so passionate it about it. You invest your whole life into something. Some people have a career, but boxing for me is not a career; it’s my whole life. I have no backup plan. I don’t have this or that to fall back on. I want to make it. If I don’t, it’ll be hard to live with. I don’t care if I’m rich or famous. I just want a world title. That’s all I want. I’ll fight for free. I just want a title. I must win this fight. It’s really ‘do or die.’ If I lose to a 35-year-old guy, where am I going? I must win this fight.

Donovan George sends his thanks and well wishes to Mike “Hollywood” Hernandez and his Uncle, Mike Apa.

Former Junior Middleweight Title Challenger David Lopez to Meet Don George on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

The March 22 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will feature Middleweight David “The Destroyer” Lopez (41-13, 25 KOs), who once fought for the Junior Middleweight title, and Don “Da Bomb” George (24-3-1, 21 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Friday’s show from the UIC Center in Chicago, will air live at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes and will be available online through WatchESPN.com and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app. The card is promoted by Warriors Boxing.

Watch Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore preview Friday’s main event

Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn), filling in for Joe Tessitore, will be ringside with Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2 HD, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will provide the latest boxing news and highlights. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call the fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio.

Friday’s studio show will discuss last weekend’s title fight between Welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr. and Ruslan Provodnikov. Provodnikov, who has appeared numerous times on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, went the distance with Bradley narrowly losing a 12-round unanimous decision.

Main Event:
Chicago’s George, is looking to build momentum after scoring a first-round knockout win over James Cook in his last fight.

“Don’s a warrior,” George’s father and trainer, Peter George, said. “He’s really preparing hard for this fight and not cutting any corners. He’s training harder than I’ve ever seen him. We know we’ve got a tough guy in front of us and I think he’ll perform impressively on the 22nd. I think he’s going to do very well.”

Mexico’s Lopez is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision win over Julio Garcia and enters Friday’s bout with big fight experience having fought Junior Middleweight titlist Austin Trout.

“Donovan George is a good fighter,” Lopez said. “I cannot take praise away from him. I know I’m going to be fighting the crowd that night as well as George, but George is also going to have a problem – he’s never faced anybody like me. The experience that I’m going to bring is going to make it a very difficult night for him. This fight is going to put me back on track toward my ultimate goal, which is to become world champion.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s 10-round co-feature will pit former Welterweight titlist Kermit Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KOs) against Adrian “El Tigre” Granados (9-1-1, 5 KOs). Cintron will look to rebound from a fifth-round TKO loss to Junior Middleweight titlist Saul Alvarez while Granados will look to win his fourth fight in a row after a fifth-round TKO win over Antonio Canas.

Quotes from George vs. Lopez Media Conference in Chicago

A media conference was held yesterday (Tuesday, March 20) to discuss this Friday’s (March 22) night of ESPN-televised boxing, live from Chicago’s UIC Pavilion and presented by 8 Count Productions, Round 3 Productions and Warriors Boxing.

In the 10-round middleweight main event, Windy City favorite Donovan “Da Bomb” George (24-3-1, 21 KOs) will take on former world title challenger David “The Destroyer” Lopez (41-13, 23 KOs) of Nogales, Mexico. And in the other featured bout, former world champion Kermit “EL Asesino” Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KOs) will drop back down to welterweight to face Chicago slugger Adrian “EL Tigre” Granados (11-2-1, 7 KOs).

Also present at the conference were Puerto Rican prospect Roberto Acevedo (7-0, 4 KOs) and his opponent that night, Chicago’s undefeated Paul Littleton (6-0-1, 4 KOs). The pair will meet in a six-round middleweight bout.

The following are quotes from the conference:

Frank Muggs, Round 3 Productions

Thanks to everyone involved. We have a great card. We’re making Chicago the destination city for boxing. It just keeps getting better. First we had four thousand people at a show. Then we had 5000. Now we’re at almost 6000. Chicago is the best fight town in the world for boxing.

Dominic Pesoli, 8 Count Productions

We’ve got an action-packed card for Friday, the fans are really getting their money’s worth. Be ready for plenty of fireworks.

Leon Margules, Warriors Boxing

I’ve known Dominic for 15 years and it’s been a great run. He’s truly one of the great regional promoters in the country, soon to be national.

The fights we’ve been putting on just keep getting better and better and the crowds keep getting bigger and bigger.

Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and their ethnic fight fans definitely support their boxers. This is our first event without a Polish presence on it. We’re doing this one with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Irish, etc.

These fights are so well matched.

In a four-rounder, we have Hairon Socarras, who is 6-0-1, 5 KOs, taking on Sergio Montes de Oca, who is 7-1-1, 2 KOs. So those two guys will fight to see who gets to step up and who stays at the club level.

Then we’ve got a young, talented guy in Paul Littleton from Chicago taking on a young, talented guy from Puerto Rico. They’re both undefeated, so it’s the proverbial ‘somone’s 0 must go!’

The co-main event is going to be terrific. Adrian Granados never takes a backward step and can’t be in a bad fight. Kermit Cintron is a former world champion who realized he doesn’t like to be the smaller man and can be the best he can possibly be at 147 lbs.

And then the main event. What a classic this fight will be.

Just look at all the upsets on David Lopez’s record. He’s won 17 of his last 18 fights. Don George has dropped down to middleweight because he’s tired of being the smaller guy in the ring too. Don George can’t be in a bad fight either.

I will be watching Friday night as a fan because of all the great matchups.

Luis DeCubas, Blue Wave Boxing

First of all, thank you to all my promotional partners and to Doug Loughrey from ESPN for making this possible.

We have a great main event put together. David Lopez is a rough guy. Donovan George is a rough guy. It’s going to be like an old-school fight like when Rocky Graziano fought Tony Zale.

I’m also very excited about Kermit Cintron dropping down in weight. He’s the world’s biggest welterweight and the biggest puncher at the weight. His opponent, Granados, was an Olympian, so that’s going to be a great fight.

Roberto Acevedo (7-0, 4 KOs)

Thanks to everyone. It’s going to be an exciting fight.

I am very motivated and thank you to Paul for making it happen.

I’m here in his backyard, putting my record on the line.

Paul Littleton (6-0-1, 4 KOs)

I’m very excited to be competing in my hometown against such a good opponent as Roberto.

Adrian Granados (11-2-1, 7 KOs)

Thank you Kermit for giving me this opportunity.

I know it’s going to be a great fight.

I grew up watching Kermit on TV.

I’m ready and so is he to put on a great show.

Kermit Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KOs)

Thank you everyone for this opportunity.

I’m going back to basics for this fight; back to my roots.

I feel it is the best for me. I had a great camp.

Adrian, I appreciate you taking this challenge and let the best man win!

I’m back to welterweight where I belong. I can do what I do best at this weight.

David Lopez (41-13, 23 KOs)

I’m very well prepared.

Donovan George has never fought anyone like me.

Donovan, thank you for the opportunity and may God bless you. Let the best man win!

Donovan George (24-3-1, 21 KOs)

It’s going to be a great night. Every fight is competitive.

I made a lot of sacrifices in preparing for this fight.

Mr. Lopez is very battle-tested, but he’s had his time. This is my time now.

I’m going to make a statement with this fight. Mr. Lopez has fought all the top guys so when I beat him it’ll be a message to the other middleweights in the world.

ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS MARCH 22, 2013 CHICAGO’S UIC PAVILION DONOVAN GEORGE VS. DAVID LOPEZ ADRIAN GRANADOS VS. KERMIT CINTRON

Kermit_Cintron
CHICAGO, IL (February 25, 2013) Chicago fan favorite and perennial contender Donovan “Da Bomb” George will battle world title challenger David “The Destroyer” Lopez of Nogales, Mexico in a ten round middleweight bout on FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2013 at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion.

The George/Lopez clash will be featured as the main event broadcast on ESPN Friday Night Fights complimented by an all-action ten round welterweight tilt between sensational prospect and hot Chicago attraction Adrian “EL Tigre” Granados and former world champion, The Fighting Pride of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Kermit “EL Asesino” Cintron.

Presented by 8 Count Productions, Round 3 Productions, Warriors Boxing and Blue Wave Boxing, advance tickets to ESPN Friday Night Fights are priced at $150, $100, $50 and $30 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000), the 8 Count Productions Offices, 312-226-5800 or the UIC Pavilion Box Office, 312-413-5740.

Doors will open on the night of the event at 7pm CT with the first bout scheduled for 8:00pm CT. The UIC Pavilion is located at 525 S. Racine, at the corner of Harrison and Racine on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago.

“We’re thrilled at the tremendous success that our events at the UIC Pavilion have had. As I said at The Palmer House at our last press conference, Chicago used to be the best fight town in the country and our TEAM is putting it at the top of the pedestal once again” said Frank Mugnolo, President of Round 3 Productions. “The fan and media support has been tremendous and MARCH 22 will once again be a special evening for Chicago boxing fans.”

Said Dominic Pesoli, President of 8 Count Productions, “Donovan has been a favorite in Chicago for many years, he’s had numerous terrific wins over his nine year career and has become a must-see attraction. He’s now campaigning at middleweight and this fight against Lopez presents the first step towards his ascent in the world rankings at 160.”

‘A fight between Donovan George and David Lopez is exactly the type of main event our fans have come to expect at our shows. Lopez is a true Mexican warrior who has only lost once in eight years and that was against Austin Trout, one of the sports’ elite champions.”

“With the addition of the excellent co-main event between Adrian Granados and Kermit Cintron, we’re off to a terrific start of what will be an outstanding evening of world class boxing for the Chicago boxing fans and those watching the telecast across the country.”

Continued Pesoli, “This is also the second straight month that ESPN Friday Night Fights is broadcasting our event and their commitment to these events strongly validates our growing presence in Chicago. It’s always a pleasure working with their TEAM.”

The 28-year-old George, 24-3-1 (21KO’s), known as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport, makes a quick return to action following his body crunching first round knockout of James Cook on FEBRUARY 1 at the UIC Pavilion.

Widely recognized for his must see-TV aggressive style and winning back flips, George’s three fights in 2012 were broadcast across three separate networks.

On MARCH 17, 2012, George was featured in a ten round war against Edwin Rodriguez from The Theatre at Madison Square Garden in a battle broadcast on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. Rodriguez was declared the winner of the hard fought battle by a close unanimous decision.

Five months later on AUGUST 17, George brutally knocked out Dionisio Miranda in the sixth round from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma. Taking the fight on three days notice when original opponent Adonis Stevenson was injured, the brilliant performance by George was telecast on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

At the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on October 12, George and Stevenson participated in a 2012 Fight of the Year candidate before a massive crowd and a Wealth TV national audience, the war being halted in the final stanza as Stevenson earned the stoppage.

A professional since 1995, Lopez sports a record of 41-13-0 (23KO’s) and has only lost once since 2005, a very close twelve round decision to WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin Trout on JUNE 11, 2011.

Prior to the Trout loss, Lopez had won sixteen fights in a row and followed up the world title challenge to Trout with a ten round unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Garcia on MAY 26, 2012.

A former amateur standout and member of the 2008 Mexican Olympic Team, the 23-year-old Granados has already proved himself against world-class competition and become one of the brightest prospects in the sport.

With numerous hard fought, memorable fights in Chicago, Granados has compiled a record of 11-2-1 (7KO’s) over his four-year career.

In his last start on December 12 in front of a packed house of loud and proud local boxing fans at Cicero Stadium, Granados dominated and out-classed the previously undefeated Antonio Canas winning every round prior to the bout being stopped in the fifth stanza.

The much more experienced and hard punching Cintron, 33-5-1 (28KO’s), first came to national attention in the boxing world winning the IBF Welterweight Championship by knocking out Mark Suarez on October 28, 2006.

Over the course of his twelve-year career, Cintron has fought many of the sports top names including Sergio Martinez, “Canelo” Alvarez, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Carlos Molina and Alfredo Angulo.

A full undercard featuring many of Chicago’s best prospects and fan favorites will be announced shortly for this event.

‘Da Bomb’ Goes Nuclear!

Heavy-handed slugger Don “Da Bomb” George (24-3-1, 21 KOs) made his debut at middleweight a quick one on Friday, February 1, as he demolished Springfield, Missouri’s James Cook in less than a round at the UIC Pavilion in George’s hometown of Chicago.

The normally durable Cook had gone five rounds with world-class middleweight Andy Lee in his previous fight, but one body shot from George was enough to force him to call it a night.

“At 160 lbs., no one can take my power,” said an enthusiastic George, post-fight. “I was knocking them out at 168, so imagine what’s going to happen when I hit a smaller middleweight on the button. No one at this weight can take my power.”

“Don was a little small at super middleweight, but his power still allowed him to lay out bigger guys. But at middleweight, he’s going to be a force. Gennady Golovkin, Chavez Jr., Quillen, none of these guys could handle what Don George brings at this lower weight. He was the hardest punching and most durable guy in the world at 168. At 160, he’s a nuclear bomb that’s ready to explode,” said George’s co-promoter, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing (along with Domenic Pesoli of 8 Count Productions and Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment).

DiBella and Pesoli, agree.

“Donovan was one of the hardest punching and most exciting fighters in the 168-lb. division. Now, fighting at his proper weight of 160 lbs., Donovan will immediately become a serious force to be reckoned with,” said DiBella.

“Over the course of his career, Donovan has shown an uncommon will to win and with the move down to 160, we expect that he will be able to compete with any of the top middleweights in the world,” added Pesoli. “We expect to see a stronger Donovan at 160 which should greatly enhance his opportunities at the world-class level.”
