BOBBY HITZ: I WILL NOT SHUT UP, OQUENDO DESERVES THE WBA TITLE SHOT

Chicago Promoter Bobby Hitz refuses to take “no” for an answer regarding Fres Oquendo’s WBA heavyweight title shot against the Russian WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin.

“Yesterday, we put out a press release telling the truth, and today they are calling, begging us to tell a lie. But I’m not afraid to tell the world what is really going on,” said Hitz. “We were offered a heavyweight title fight against Povetkin a couple of weeks ago and we accepted Povetkin’s lowball offer because we know that Fres can knockout Povetkin. And it is absolutely true that Povetkin’s handlers informed us that they were going in a different direction, because after studying Fres they realized that Fres was too fast, too slick and too big a risk for Povetkin. Povetkin’s handlers told us themselves that they want an ‘easy’ opponent which is why they are now considering the unknown Polish fighter Andrzej Wawrzyk who has fought nobody.”

“After we put out our release, I got a call from a major boxing website saying that they were concerned that Povetkin’s promoter, Sauerland, would take action against them so they would not run the story. But truth is an absolute defense, so they can say or deny all they want, but here in the U.S., we have freedom of the press and I intend to exercise my God-given right,” Hitz continued.

“Today, I got a call from one of my associates that Povetkin’s handlers had called, begging me to shut up, that no decision had been made yet,” said Hitz. “Well I am not shutting up because a decision was already made. We were offered the fight, we accepted the fight, we had Fres sign a bout agreement for the fight and now they are chickening out because they realize they made a mistake in choosing Fres and have admitted to us they want an ‘easy’ opponent.”

“I’m told that Roy Jones, Jr. is very popular and highly respected in Russia,” Hitz continued. “Well Roy Jones and I are the co-promoters of Oquendo, and we both guarantee that Povetkin vs. Oquendo will be a great fight. So we are calling upon all the boxing fans in Russia to rise up and stop this injustice and make Povetkin and his handlers live up to their word so they get a real fight, not a Polish joke.”

Oquendo: I Deserve This Fight More Than Anybody

“No one deserves the Klitschko fight more than me,” says long-time heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo.

WBA #5 and WBA #12-rated Oquendo (35-7, 23 KOs) can make a strong case for being the next to face WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 6 in Hanover, Germany.

“I’m seeing these newcomer kids talking about how they deserve to fight Klitschko. I haven’t lost a fight legitimately since 2006. In 2003, I had a world-title fight and lost an outrageous robbery against Chris Byrd. Byrd went on to lose the title that I should have won that night to Wladimir. So, if they hadn’t stolen my title from me that night, I would have already had a fight against Wladimir! Me getting the fight against Wladimir is boxing karma making things right.”

39-year-old Oquendo, who began his career in 1997, has won countless regional titles and is still stopping the opponents he’s supposed to stop. He took out capable veterans Robert Hawkins and Joey Abell in his two latest appearances.

“I’m still as sharp as I’ve ever been and I know how to get to Wladimir. I’ve been trying to get him in the ring for years because I see what you need to do to beat him. Plus, if you put my resume next to anybody else’s that they’re talking about it’s like a joke. Nobody else deserves this fight as much as I do. So let’s get it done, call my promoter, Bobby Hitz, so I can start training to go over there and kick his ass.”

With the consistent uncertainty in the Heavyweight division, the winner of this bout will get a big leg up in being able to once again compete for the Heavyweight championship of the world.

McCall has a career that has spanned twenty-five years, has a record of 54-10 with thirty-seven knockouts.

McCall has been in the ring with just about every big-time Heavyweight that has competed in the last quarter century as he has shared the ring with former undisputed champion James “Buster” Douglas (L 10); Former Cruiserweight champion Orlin Norris (L 10) ; Former WBA Heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon (TKO 9); former world title challenger Tony Tucker ( L 12) before shocking the world by stopping WBC Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis with the right hand heard round the world on September 24, 1994.

McCall made one defense against the legendary Larry Holmes before dropping the belt to Frank Bruno in Bruno’s homeland of England.

Two fights later he lost a rematch to Lewis in an effort to regain the WBC crown.

McCall then racked up thirteen straight victories, which included a stoppage over former WBO champion Henry Akinwande, McCall lost a close decision to former world title challenger DaVarryl Williamson.

McCall once again ripped off a long winning streak as he won ten straight before losing to former world title challenger and former Cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez.

McCall has won three of his last four which includes has fight when he dropped a twelve round unanimous decision to Timur Ibragimov on June 15.

Oquendo has not been around as long as McCall but he is still a tough veteran and has a lot of success beating top competition.

Oquendo has a record of 32-6 with twenty-one knockouts and has been a pro for thirteen years.

Oquendo won his first twenty-one bouts which included solid wins over Duncan Dokawari (12-0); former world title challenger Phil Jackson (42-7); former world title challenger Bert Cooper; A breakout performance over Clifford Etienne and a 3rd round stoppage over David Izon (27-3) before Oquendo’s first loss came at the hands of future world title challenger David Tua (27-3).

After two wins, Oquendo received two consecutive shots at the world Heavyweight title.

On September 20, 2003, Oquendo dropped a twelve round unanimous decision to IBF Champ Chris Byrd in a bout that many believed that Oquendo won. That earned him an opportunity to fight WBA champion John Ruiz in Madison Square Garden.

This was a bout that was basically even on the scorecards until Ruiz stopped Oquendo in Round 11.

Three fights later, Oquendo lost a hotly disputed decision to former four-time world champion Evander Holyfield.

In his last eight bouts, Oquendo has gone 6-2 with a win over former WBA champion Bruce Seldon and dropping bouts to former world champion James Toney and his last bout which was a razor thin loss to former world cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck.

In the co-feature world ranked (WBC #8; WBA #4) Welterweight Brad Solomon will put his undefeated mark of 15-0 (seven Knockouts) against tough Anges Adjaho in a ten round bout.

The native of Lafayette, Louisiana has defeated undefeated Ray Robinson (11-0) and knockout artist Kenny Galarza (13-0).

Solomon fought just twelve days ago when he scored a second round stoppage over Javier Gallegos in Nicaragua.

Adjaho has a record of 27-3 with fourteen knockouts and won his first twenty-five fights.

He lost a close split decision to future world champion Miguel Acosta before winning two in a row which included a win over former world title challenger Fernando Angulo.
