Heavy-handed Dominican Arias stops hometown favorite Gonzalez in fourth round of main event of Winter Brawl to capture vacant WBC Silver crown at Mohegan Sun

Uncasville, CT – Dominican Dannis Aguero Arias stunned the capacity crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena last night, stopping hometown favorite Irvin Gonzalez Jr. via fourth-round knockout in the main event of CES Boxing’s Winter Brawl to capture the vacant WBC Silver Featherweight Title.

The hard-hitting Arias (20-2), who boasted 16 knockouts – all on Dominican soil – entering Saturday’s fight made his United States debut against the well-decorated Worcester, MA, native Gonzalez (15-4), who fought for the first time in 13 months after spending all of 2022 recovering from elbow and hand surgeries.

Arias was the aggressor from the opening bell, throwing wild, lopping haymakers and fighting effectively on the inside to drive Gonzalez into the ropes. Arias scored a knockdown in the third when Gonzalez leaned too far through the ropes on the tail end of a flurry and then finished the fight at the 2:04 mark of the fourth courtesy of a hard, overhand right that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas. Referee Johnny Callas wisely waved it off before Gonzalez could get to his feet, securing Arias’ ninth consecutive, all of which have come by knockout.

In other action, New London, CT, super featherweight Alejandro Paulino (12-0) won by knockout against the dangerous Ryizeemmion Ford (8-4). After scoring a knockout in the closing seconds of the fourth round, Paulino battered Ford with a flurry of shots in the fifth, prompting referee Danny Schiavone to wave it off at the 1:17 mark. The 24-year-old Paulino bounced back nicely after sustaining damage from hard right hands in the first and second round to secure the 10th knockout of his young career.

Continuing his successful transition from MMA to boxing, Long Island’s John Gotti III (2-0) made quick work of Minnesota’s Alex Citrowske (1-2-), scoring three knockdowns in the opening round – including the clincher at the 2:59 mark – for his second win on the professional circuit. Gotti made his successful debut as a boxer in October and was previously 5-1 as a pro in MMA, fighting under the umbrella of CES MMA.

Hometown favorite Chordale Booker (18-1) of Stamford, CT, rebounded nicely from his first career loss in April on Saturday, cruising to a methodical 80-72, 80-72, 79-73 unanimous decision over Texas middleweight Angel Hernandez (17-8-2). Booker has his way with the shorter, overmatched Hernandez, boxing effectively on the outside and landing cleanly early and often. Booker hadn’t fought since April, when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to prospect Austin Williams.

Having to switch gears when his original opponent suffered an injury, Brockton, MA, super featherweight Kevin Walsh (7-0) captured the vacant New England 130-pound Title in a hard-earned 59-55, 59-54, 56-57 win over New York’s Christian Otero (4-3). Walsh was previously scheduled to face Rhode Island’s Mike Valentin, but instead battled the taller, heavy-handed Otero, boxing effectively on the inside and getting the better of their exchanges despite Otero’s height and reach advantage.

In what was the biggest upset of the night, Boston’s Mitch Louis-Charles (7-3-2) stopped previously unbeaten Josniel Castro (9-1) with a thunderous right hand at the 1:56 mark of the fourth round, ending the super welterweight prospect’s win streak at nine fights. Louis-Charles, who was born in Quebec and now trains in Boston under Alex Rivera of Rivera Brothers Boxing, hadn’t fought since August of 2021 when he lost a split decision to Connecticut’s Jose Rivera at CES Boxing’s show in Springfield, MA.

The humble right-hander promptly called out CES favorites Francis Hogan and Jalen Renaud following Saturday’s upset win, perhaps setting the stage for a pair of future all-New England showdowns.

Also at Winter Brawl:

Former MMA standout Mike Kimbel (1-0) of Waterbury, CT, made his successful debut in boxing, stopping upstate New York’s Robert Banks at the 1:50 mark of the fourth and final round

Heavyweight Gabriel Aguilar Costa (1-3) survived a second-round knockout to earn a split-decision win over Brockton, MA, native Chad Leoncello (1-1-1), avenging his knockout loss to Leoncello in November

Female welterweight prospect Stevie Jane Coleman (4-1) of Columbia, CT, won her fourth in a row, beating the tough Michaela Nogue (2-3) of Egg Harbor, NJ, by majority decision, 39-37, 39-37, 38-38

Worcester light heavyweight Kendrick Ball Jr. (19-1-3) fought to a majority draw against Argentinian Victor Hugo Exner (9-13-1)

Healthy and healed, Gonzalez ready to conquer featherweight division

Uncasville, CT – Bad news, featherweights: Irvin Gonzalez Jr. is back and finally healthy as he enters his prime.

The Worcester, MA, native returns to the ring for the first time in 13 months on Saturday, January 21 as CES Boxing opens its 2023 season with Winter Brawl at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The 26-year-old Gonzalez (15-3, 11 KOs), a decorated amateur who competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, made one of the most difficult, yet beneficial, decisions of his career in 2022 when he sat out the entire year to fully recover from two major surgeries.

In January of 2022, doctors repaired an elbow injury that had been bothering him for years. In April, he had surgery on his hand, another setback that all but derailed his chances of fighting again before the end of the year. The surgery on his elbow was his third; the difference this time was he didn’t halt the recovery process to rush back into the ring.

The end result is a healthier, happier, and well-rested Gonzalez who is mentally and physically ready to make his move in the 126-pound division.

“This is the first time I’ve been injury-free in a long time,” Gonzalez said. “In the past when I had injuries, there was always a worry in the back of my mind that something would go wrong. Now I don’t have to worry.

“I took the time to heal completely and mentally I’m in such a better placed now. I’m going into my prime years fully healed.”

A fully-healed Gonzalez in his mid-20s could be a game-changer in the featherweight division. At his peak, Gonzalez breezed through his weight class, turning pro at the age of 20 and winning his first 12 fights. After signing with CES in 2019, Gonzalez began his resurgence with back-to-back knockout wins, including a thrilling victory over Yeuri Andujar to capture the WBC Youth title in February of 2020.

Then the pandemic hit, which kept Gonzalez inactive for nine months until he starred on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones extravaganza, narrowly losing to Edward Vazquez in what may have been the fight of the night.

Gonzalez was supposed to return the following summer at CES’ groundbreaking outdoor show in Rhode Island, but the elbow injury flared up, forcing him to withdraw from his scheduled WBC USNBC title bout. Against Adan Ochoa. Gonzalez remained on the shelf until December of 2021 when he beat the dangerous Yeison Vargas in Orlando, another 13-month layoff between bouts.

The obvious goal in 2023 is to be more prolific and remain as active as ever, perhaps enough to line up a major opportunity before the end of the year. Gonzalez fought four times in 2019, but has also stepped in the ring three times in the last three years.

“I want to come out this year on a major note. I want fight after fight after fight,” Gonzalez said. “Hopefully, I get the fights I need to get back to where I’m supposed to be and by the end the year hopefully be in the conversation for something big.”

The injuries were as big a setback mentality as they were physically; a skilled athlete his entire life, Gonzalez played football, baseball, and soccer and ran cross country in high school, but never suffered physical ailments until he dove deeper into boxing – the sport he chose to pursue over the others. Having boxed since the age of 8, the sudden inability to perform at his best was a bitter pill to swallow for Gonzalez.

“It definitely got frustrating, especially after the first surgery,” he said. “When I had to go back a second time knowing it wasn’t fixed, that was tough from a mental standpoint. You try to tell yourself you’re not injured, but I knew I had to get right physically.”

With the surgeries behind him, Gonzalez could be one of boxing’s breakthrough stars in 2023. The journey begins January 21 in what might be the biggest fight of Gonzalez’s career – a new lease on life in the squared circle with the much-needed peace of mind to succeed.

Winter Brawl is headlined by heavyweight “The Sicilian Nightmare” Juiseppe Cusumano (21-4, 19 KOs) facing “The Hungarian Hammer” Istvan Bernath (10-1, 8 KOs) in the 10-round main event and the long-awaited return of Stamford, CT, light middleweight Chordale Booker (17-1, 7 KOs) in an eight-round showcase against 37-fight veteran Angel Hernandez (17-17-3, 11 KOs).

The event also features super featherweight Alejandro Paulino (11-0, 9 KOs) putting his undefeated record on the line in a six-round bout against Ryizeemmion Ford (8-3, 6 KOs) and undefeated welterweight Josniel Castro (9-0, 7 KOs), a Boca Raton, FL, native who’s fought his entire pro career in New England from Massachusetts to New Hampshire, facing one of his toughest tests to date in a six-round showdown against Quebec native and Boston resident Mitch Louis Charles (6-3-2, 3 KOs).

Clampitt, Gonzalez headline CES’ star-studded return to live action

Providence, RI (May 28, 2021) – Fans will be in attendance for the time in more than a year as CES Boxing returns with a huge outdoor spectacular to kick off the summer season live on UFC FIGHT PASS®.

On Saturday, June 19, CES brings live professional boxing to Rhode Island’s historic Cranston Stadium, the state’s most revered outdoor multi-sport complex, for a special matinee show beginning with preliminary bouts at noon followed by the live stream of the main card at 1 on FIGHT PASS.

While the COVID-19 pandemic prevented fans from attending live combat sports events worldwide, CES is excited to welcome fans to Cranston Stadium on June 19. Sources report that this will be Rhode Island’s first outdoor boxing event since August 25, 1959 at Pierce Memorial Stadium in East Providence when former world light heavyweight title challenger Tony Anthony – who battled pound-for-pound great and Hall of Famer Archie Moore two years prior – knocked out Providence’s Bob Young in the eighth round of their scheduled 10-round bout.

This is CES’ first event since a closed-door FIGHT PASS show in October and its first in front of a live audience since February of 2020 in Worcester, MA.

“No sport is more exciting than live, professional boxing, and absolutely nothing can replace the thrill and energy of fans in attendance creating the fight-night atmosphere our fighters deserve,” said CES Boxing president and CEO Jimmy Burchfield Sr. “This has been a long road for everyone in the sport, promoters and fighters included, but we’re confident the best is yet to come as we all finally return to doing what we do best.”

“We are grateful for the conscientious efforts of [Rhode Island] Governor Dan McKee, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins and other state and local officials in re-opening business in Rhode Island. Most importantly, we are extremely thankful for our loyal fans who’ve stuck with us over the past year and a half. We promised we’d be back better than before and we guarantee 4th of July fireworks on June 19!”

With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the state of Rhode Island revising their COVID-19 guidelines in recent weeks, tickets will be available starting at $50 online at CESFights.com. The event will also include a moment of silence to honor those who have lost their lives to COVID-19.

The June 19 matinee will feature a mix of CES’ top fan favorites and rising stars, including the highly-anticipated return of four-time world champion; Saskatchewan native; and Warwick, RI, resident Jamie “Hurricane” Clampitt (22-5-1, 7 KOs), who fights for the first time since 2013 in a six-round showcase against former WBC super featherweight champion Olivia Gerula (18-19-2, 3 KOs) of Ontario.

Also fighting June 19 is Worcester, MA, featherweight and reigning WBC World Youth champion Irvin Gonzalez Jr. (14-3, 11 KOs), who recently faced Edward Vazquez in a show-stopping preliminary bout on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. event in November.

Lynn, MA, welterweight Khiry Todd (10-1, 8 KOs) makes his long-awaited return, ending a 20-month layoff, and fellow welterweight Victor Reynoso (6-0, 5 KOs) of Providence puts his unbeaten record on the line in his first fight since November of 2019, both in separate six-round bouts. The undercard also features Mansfield, MA, welterweight James Perella (6-0, 4 KOs), who made his CES debut in October with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Antonio Castillo, and the long-awaited return of Cranston light heavyweight Gary Balletto III (1-0, 1 KO), the son of New England boxing icon Gary “Tiger” Balletto.

Charismatic fan favorite Mike “Bling Bling” Valentin (6-1-1) of Providence is also back in action, returning to the ring for the first time since battling regional rival Josh Orta in 2019. He joins undefeated Pawtucket, RI, featherweight Ricky Delossantos (9-0, 1 KO), who ends a 22-month layoff, and New Bedford, MA, super lightweight Wilson Mascarenhas (3-1), who aims for his fourth consecutive win.

Clampitt’s comeback figures to draw considerable buzz in boxing circles. The 44-year-old female boxing icon perfected her craft under the guidance of Burchfield. A pioneer in women’s boxing, Clampitt captured the first of her four world titles in 2003 with a unanimous decision win over Eliza Olson for the IWBF super lightweight crown and four years later dropped down to 135 pounds to defeat fellow icon Mia St. John for the IWBF lightweight title in 2007.

After retiring in 2010, Clampitt returned to the ring three years later at Twin River Casino Hotel and beat Dominga Oliva by unanimous decision. In 2019, she was among seven fighters inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in Nevada.

Gonzalez will headline the card as he looks to rebound from a narrow loss to Edward Vazquez for the vacant WBC USNBC featherweight title in November. Gonzalez and Vazquez stole the spotlight in the opener of the Tyson-Jones pay-per-view telecast, matching wits – and fists – for eight hard rounds. In 2019 as the co-main event of CES’ last show in front of a live audience, Gonzalez secured the youth title with a thrilling knockout win over the dangerous Yeuri Andujar in front of his hometown fans. A standout amateur, the 25-year-old Gonzalez competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Nevada before making his professional debut later that summer.
