Unconquered Middleweight Prospect Caleb Plant Returns Oct 31 in Houston

Caleb Plant
NASHVILLE, TN (October 22, 2015) – Unconquered super-middleweight prospect, Caleb “Sweet-Hands” Plant (10-0, 8 KOs), returns to the ring October, 31, 2015 against an opponent TBA at the NRG Arena in Houston, Texas. The card is headlined by Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) vs. Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KOs) as Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN will telecast the live event beginning at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT. Plant’s fight will serve as the swing bout for the televised portion of the PBC broadcast.

In his last outing, Plant went 8-rounds for the first time in his career, winning a lopsided unanimous decision against Jamar Freeman. Known for having power in both hands, Caleb was able to drop Freeman in the third round before cursing to victory. Plant’s mindset coming into this fight is to end the fight with a knockout.

“This will be my sixth time fighting this year and I’m learning more about myself with each fight,” said Caleb Plant. “Going the distance in my last fight was something new to me but I proved I can into the later rounds if I have to. To be honest though, nothing feels better than getting the knockout. In this fight I’m going to be more aggressive and let my punches go. Nothing reckless, but heavy bombs will be thrown. A knockout is what I’ll be seeking before the final bell rings.”

Tickets priced $163, $109, $49 and $22, plus applicable fees are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Leija*Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302 or at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (800) 745-3000, via the internet at www.ticketmaster.com and at the NRG Stadium South Ticket Windows.

“This is a good fight against a former world champion,” said Charlo. “He’s experienced and he’s been in the ring with multiple world champions. I’m not taking anything away from him, but Houston is my town. I’ve been anticipating another fight here. I’m ready to go and I’m going to put on a great show.”

“I am so excited for this opportunity to compete against a young, strong fighter like Jermell Charlo,” said Alcine. “I don’t think he’s faced a fighter with my level of experience in big fights. I am not going to make it easy for him. I am going to challenge Charlo like he never has been before.”

Younger-by-one-minute than his identical twin, super welterweight world champion Jermall, Charlo is also a highly ranked young fighter looking to get one step closer to a world title shot. A tall fighter for his division, the 25-year-old stepped up in class in 2014 and delivered three wide unanimous decision victories over Gabriel Rosado, Charlie Ota and Mario Lozano. In 2015 he delivered his most impressive victory to date, beating highly-ranked Vanes Martirosyan in March.

A veteran of the sport for over 15 years, Alcine is unbeaten in his last three bouts. The 39-year-old won a world title in 2007 with a victory over previously unbeaten Travis Simms and defended against Alfonso Mosquera. Born in Haiti, but fighting out of Quebec, Alcine owns a victory over David Lemieux and most recently fought to a split-draw with Delvin Rodriguez.

At just 25-years-old, Harrison has made big noise recording a 10-fight knockout streak before dropping his last fight to Willie Nelson. The Detroit-native will look to bounce back and return to the win column when he enters the ring on October 31. He has picked up victories over Antwone Smith, Tyrone Brunson, Bronco McKart and Pablo Munguia in the last two years.

After an extended amateur career in which he competed in nearly 100 fights, McCalla is looking to bounce back from a loss to Ishe Smith in April. He entered 2015 on a 20-fight win streak and hopes to get back on track on October 31. The 30-year-old fights out of Baltimore, Maryland.

Delvin Rodriguez_Diller
The May 16 edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra will feature former Jr. Middleweight and Welterweight world title challenger Delvin Rodríguez (28-7-3, 16 KOs) meeting former Jr. Middleweight titlist Joachim “Ti-Joa” Alcine (35-7-1, 21 KOs) in the 10-round Jr. Middleweight main event.

Friday’s show, from Olympic Stadium in Montreal, will air live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN. The card is promoted by Star Boxing.

Commentators:
Blow-by-blow commentator Joe Tessitore will be ringside with analyst Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will present all the latest boxing news and highlights. Pablo Viruega and Alex Pombo, filling in for Delvin Rodríguez, will call the fights for Noche de Combates (Fight Night) on ESPN Deportes, while Leopoldo González and Claudia Trejos will anchor the studio.

Main Event:
Connecticut’s Rodríguez, who doubles as an ESPN Deportes boxing analyst, is fighting on Friday Night Fights for the 17th time. His 2011 bout with Pawel Wolak —a 10-round draw—was named 2011 “Fight of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). In the rematch later that year, Rodríguez defeated Wolak setting him up for a 2012 WBA Jr. Middleweight title shot against then titlist Austin Trout. Rodríguez, who also fought Isaac Hlatshwayo for the IBF Welterweight title in 2009, is looking to get back to his winning ways following a third-round TKO loss in his last fight to former Jr. Welterweight, Welterweight, and Junior Middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto.

“At this stage in my career, I don’t take anybody lightly. He’s (Alcine) looking to redeem himself, get back into the game, get back into the mix, just like I’m trying to do,” Rodríguez said. “We’re training really hard and doing our own thing…We’ve been around for a long time. I know when I’m ready. You’ve just got to stay focused and confident – and that, I always am.”

Alcine, who hails from California, and won the WBA Jr. Middleweight world title in 2007 by defeating then-defending titlist Travis Simms by 12-round unanimous decision, has won his last two fights, including a third-round KO win over Jovan Ramirez in his last bout.

“This fight, I’m going in to give my best, ’cause I don’t think it is over for me yet,” Alcine said. “A lot of people think I’m finished, I’m done, but it’s over only when God says it’s over.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s 10-round co-feature will pit Heavyweights Derric “El León” Rossy (28-8, 14 KOs) of New York against New Jersey’s Joe “The Future” Hanks (21-1, 14 KOs). Rossy is looking to rebound from an eight-round, split-decision loss to Joey Dawejko, while Hanks is looking to score a victory following a fourth-round TKO loss to Andy Ruiz.

Broner becomes three-division champ with split decision over Malignaggi

Adrien-Broner
BROOKLYN—Adrien Broner became a three-division world champion as he won the WBA Welterweight title with a 12 round split decision over Paulie Malignaggi at the Barclays Center

Malignaggi came out landing the jab with a accuracy and volume. The was a solid strategy over the first two rounds. At the end of round two. Broner had a big round three as rocked Malignaggi with a hard left hook and then followed up with a hard combination at the end of the round. Malignaggi kept to a solid game plan as he played to his strengths by throwing five and six punches, focusing on the body in attempt to slow the power punching Broner..

Over the second half of the fight Broner landed some hard shots that bounced off the face of Malignaggi but the two-time champion kept on coming. Broner landed the more descriptive punches of note and there were alot of them but Malignaggi continued to throw a great volume of punches.

Broner took two cards 117-111, 115-113 and Malignaggi took a third card 115-113.

Broner is now 27-0. Malignaggi is now 32-5.

“Paulie fought exactly how I thought he was going to,” said Broner. “He was shadow boxing. My next opponent, I’m going to let you all pick. I’m good. I beat Paulie. I left with his belt.”

“I think I worked him. This was a close fight,” Malignaggi said after the fight. “The fight could have went either way. I don’t think he did enough to take the belt from the champion.”

Seth Mitchell drew even with Jonathon Banks by winning a boring 12 round decision that had little action and a lot of booing from the crowd

After the first five-plus minuted provided nothing but a lot of booing from the crowd, Mitchell landed a little uppercut that sent Banks to the canvas. In round three, Banks turned the tables as he rocked Mitchell on several occasions that had Mitchell hurt and holding on.

Not much happened for the final nine rounds. Mitchell would put out the jab. Banks would offer little in return with a lot of clutching and grabbing in between.

Mitchell of Brandywyne, MD won by scores of 117-109; 115-112 and 114-112 and is now 26-1-1. Banks of Detroit is now 29-2-1.

Perican came out im round seven with more vigor. In round eight, Bika unintentionally headbutted Periban twice. After the fight was resumed, a wild exchange incurred with Periban getting the better of the exchanges. Periban started being a little more consistent in round’s right through ten. The two battled tooth and nail down the stretch with the 12th being nothing short of a war. Both guys were rocked several times much to the delight of the Barclays Center crowd.

Bika of Sydney, Australia won by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 114-114 and is now 32-5-2. Periban of Mexico City is 20-1.

Williams continued the assault as another big flurry sent the former champion down at the end of the frame. Williams drilled Alcine with a perfet left hook to start the the fifth that sent him down for a third time.

In round seven, Alcine showed signs of life by working the body and then a nice three punch combination to the head. Alcine continued to get the better of the action in round’s seven and eight but Williams took the early rounds plus the three knockdowns were enough to get the nod by scores of 77-72 on all cards.

Williams of Philadelphia is now 13-0-1. Alcine of Haiti is now 33-5-1.

2012 U.S. Olympian Marcus Browne needed just over one round in taking Ricardo Campillo in a Light Heavyweight bout scheduled for six rounds.

Gonaive, Haiti native Alcine (33-4-1, 19 KO’s) is unlike any fighter Williams has seen in his professional his career. The former WBA Super Welterweight World Champion who now resides in the boxing hotbed of Montreal holds wins over Travis Simms, Carl Daniels and David Lemieux and is looking to bounce back from a gritty 12-round loss to Brian Rose in April.

Living just over the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island, New York, “Sir” Marcus Browne (4-0, 4 KO’s) will have a short commute to work on June 22. The 2012 United States Olympian has been making short work of his opponents, too, showing off his punching power by finishing all four of his foes by knockout. Obregon, Mexico’s Ricardo Campillo (7-6-1, 5 KO’s) will be aiming to end that streak and score the upset. Having faced four undefeated opponents in his last four bouts, he’s no stranger to taking on up-and-coming prospects.

Three-time United States Olympian Rau’Shee Warren (12-0, 2 KO’s) and 2012 United States Olympian Jamel Herring (3-0, 2 KO’s) have both compiled impressive pro records and will look to keep the momentum going in their Brooklyn debuts. Cincinnati’s Warren meets Pueblo, Colorado’s Ernest Marquez (9-12, 3 KO’s) in a four/six round bantamweight match which will be included on SHOWTIME EXTREME (time permitting) and Coram, New York’s Herring takes on Prichard, Alabama’s Calvin Smith (2-3) in a four-round lightweight fight.

Brooklyn will be well represented at Barclays Center on June 22 by undefeated junior featherweight Juan Dominguez (14-0, 10 KO’s) who squares off against St. Paul, Minnesota’s Bradley Patraw (9-5, 5 KO’s) in an eight-round bout. Brooklyn’s popular junior middleweight Frank Galarza (9-0-2, 5 KO’s) will also look to once again wow the hometown fans when he takes on Arecibo, Puerto Rico’s Edgar Perez (5-5, 3 KO’s) in a six-round junior middleweight fight.

A lightweight bout scheduled for six rounds completes the card, as Toledo, Ohio’s Robert Easter Jr. (4-0, 4 KO’s) searches for his fifth pro win against Merrillville, Indiana’s Antoine Knight (2-3, 1 KO).

Malignaggi vs. Broner, a 12-round fight for Malignaggi’s WBA Welterweight World Championship, will take place Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and R & R Promotions, supported by Golden Boy Promotions’ sponsors Corona and AT&T and will be televised live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. In the co-featured bouts, Johnathon Banks will look to repeat his 2012 upset win over Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell as he defends his NABO and WBC International Heavyweight titles in a 12-round fight presented in association with K2 Promotions and number one rated WBC super middleweight contender Sakio Bika faces number four rated WBC super middleweight contender Marco Antonio Periban in a 12-round fight for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight World Championship. SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is available in Spanish on secondary audio programming (SAP). Preliminary fights will air on SHOWTIME EXTREME® at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

FEB 8TH ESPN2 FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS AT BELL CENTRE BIZIER VS. CAMPBELL

MONTREAL (January 31, 2013) – As previously announced, Fast & Dangerous Series 3.0 is back at the Bell Centre on February 8 as talented Quebec fighter Kevin Bizier (19-0-0, 13 KOs), rated No. 5 in the world by the WBA, defends his North American Boxing Association (NABA) welterweight championship in the biggest challenge of his career.

Originally, Bizier was scheduled to fight 27-year-old Englishman John O’Donnell (27-2-0, 11KO), promoted by Hennessy Sports Canada group’s Adam Harris, but he broke his left hand in training last weekend. He has been replaced by former unified IBF, WBA & WBO (2008-2009) world champion Nate “The Galaxy Warrior” Campbell (36-9-1, 26 KOs) in the 12-round main event. Despite being 40 years old, Campbell continues to have great success in the ring. In 2010 and 2011, he extended future world champions Victor Ortiz and Danny Garcia to modest wins in 10-round bouts points decisions. In his last two fights, both on the road in 2012, Campbell knocked out aspiring world champion Victor Manuel Cayo in the Dominican Republic, and won a unanimous decision over boxer Vladimir Baez in Poland.

“Kevin wanted an opponent of notoriety and reputation with a strong will like Campbell,” GYM President Yvon Michel explained. “Only a small percentage of boxers become world champions and a few exceptional boxers become unified world champions like Campbell. The table is set in Quebec on February 8 and he was offered the chance to prove he belongs among the elite of the talented welterweight division.

In the semi-final, 26-year-old lefty Tyler Asselstine (12-0-0, 7 KOs), of Ottawa, fights for the 10th time in Montreal, against 20-year-old terror Joel Diaz (11 -0, 10 KOs), of California.. The two unbeaten, young boxers young are eager to make their marks in the super featherweight division.

These two fights will enjoy a remarkable visibility platform as they will be presented live on American television as part of the popular series “Friday Night Fights” on ESPN2 sports channel. Bizier is excited about the privilege he has had offered to him, saying, “I’m thrilled about this opportunity to show everyone that I’m ready for the big leagues. I know Campbell is experienced and has been a great champion. Obviously, preparing for a 5′ 11″ lefty and now fighting a 5’7” right-handed opponent has forced me to make several adjustments but, without a doubt, it will not prevent me from shining and emerging victorious with fashion.”‘

Spectators present at Bell Centre will also have the privilege to watch the return of former WBA super welterweight champion Joachim “Ti Joa” Alcine (33-3-1, 19 KOs). Alcine wants to restart his career with an impressive win against Miami, Florida veteran David Toribio (19-14-0, 12 KOs). Alcine had a lot of success fighting in Montreal, highlighted by majority decision victory over David Lemieux in December, 2011.

A total of seven fights are scheduled, including heavyweight Didier Bence (6-0-0, 2 KOs) vs. Joey “Polish Thunder Dawejko (7-1-2, 3 KOs), of Philadelphia, in a six-round bout, plus spectacular super featherweight Kevin Lavallee (11-0-1, 9 KOs), of Ste-Adela, versus unbeaten Polish challnger Krzysztof Rogowski (5-0-0, 2 KOs).

Tickets, starting at $30.00, are available to purchase at Bell Centre, online at www.evenko.ca, or by calling GYM at (514) 383.0666.

Rigondeaux – Marroquin ; Macklin – Alcine set for Martinez – Chavez undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com reports that two of the three televised undercard bouts for the much anticipated Sergio Martinez – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight on Sepetmber 15th in Las Vegas have been set.

WBA Super Bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux will take on once beaten Robert Marroquin while former Middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin will take on former Jr. Middleweight titlist Joachim Alcine.

“Everybody has agreed to extend it so he can be on this card,” said promoter Bob Arum. “He signed a bout agreement for the fight, so the fight with Robert Marroquin, that’s a done deal.”

“Marroquin feels he can beat him and he really wanted this fight. He is up for this kind of challenge,” Arum said. “Rigondeaux is probably one of the best fighters around, but one thing is even if he’s one of the best fighters around, he’s a little chinny and Marroquin can hit pretty good.”

“Alcine fought really well in his last fight against David Lemieux and I thought Macklin made a lot of fans with his performance against Sergio,” said Lou DiBella, who promoted both Macklin and Alcine. “It think it’s a really good fight. Alcine is a little older now so he will be more in front of Macklin. It’s a very high skill level middleweight fight and it very well could create the next opponent for Chavez whether he loses or wins against Sergio.”

Lemieux to take on Alcine December 10th

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Canadian based Middleweights David Lemieux will take on Joachim Alcine on December 10th in Montreal.

“We are finalizing the paperwork and we are supposed to have a press conference on Monday,” said Lemieux’s promoter Yvon Michel, adding that the bout will be available on pay-per-view in Quebec. “It’s not a fight that will draw 15,000, but this is a big local rivalry and we should draw around 5,000.”

“For Lemieux, he needs to prove he made a good move to change trainers,” Michel said. “He has to prove what happened against Rubio was just an accident in his career and that he has grown and learned from that. He will definitely want to show it against Alcine.”

“I let him go because I didn’t want him to fight in December,” Lemieux’s former trainer Russ Anber told ESPN.com last week following their split. “What I wanted from him was a four-month commitment to boxing. Train, get his weight down, do a lot of conditioning and then go to a training camp. We spent the last five months trying to get him to commit to training. I realized I’m banging my head against the wall. I want him to see what you need to do to be an elite middleweight, to prepare for a career, not just one fight, and we weren’t going to see eye to eye.

“We just don’t see eye to eye on the way he should be preparing for fights. Instead of him being miserable in the gym, and for my mental sanity, it’s better to go separate ways than butt heads. Marc has my blessing. He trains his fighters in my gym. So this split with David is not a hateful split or about money. It’s just we are on a different philosophical plane on what it takes to succeed in the elite world of boxing.

“Marc (Ramsay) keeps telling me everything that he asks David to do he has done with intensity and no complaint at all, that he is very dedicated and focused,” Michel said. “Maybe David and Russ, that relationship had just run its course. I know David has a lot of talent, charisma and power. He has all the tools to succeed.”

“It’s a crossroads fight, no question about it,” Said Alcine’s promoter Lou DiBella. “Lemieux is coming off the big loss and Alcine is at the stage of his career where he has to see if he can still compete. If he can pull off an upset he’s a star again in Canada and if he can’t, he can’t. It’s a fight he wanted and I was able to get him a fair purse. For the Canadian audience this is a very meaningful fight.”
