Saul Sanchez Triumphs With 3rd Round KO

ONTARIO, CA (December 20, 2021) – This past Friday at Thompson Boxing’s “Path to Glory” event, rising super bantamweight contender, Saul “The Beast” Sanchez (18-1, 10 KOs), scored a third-round knockout against Jose “Hollywood” Estrella (23-17-1, 16 KOs). The event took place at the Doubletree hotel in Ontario, CA.

In the opening round both fighters were looking to establish their jabs but started to let their hands fly once they started to land hard shots. Sanchez was the aggressor, landing nice combos, while Estrella was countering landing some nice overhand right hands. Both fighters continued to let their hands go in round two, but it was Sanchez who was getting the better of the exchanges. In round three, Sanchez landed a left hook to the body that sent Estrella to the canvas. Estrella couldn’t recover and the bout was stopped at the 1:36 mark. With the win Sanchez inches closer to a world title shot and has big plans for 2022.

“We were both going for it from the opening bell, and I knew eventually I was going to land a big shot,” said Sanchez. “When I landed that left hook to the body, it was a perfect shot, and I took him out. I’m hoping early next year I’ll be able to fight for a regional title, with the hopes of fighting for a world title by the end of the year. I feel I’m ready to take on all the champs at bantamweight and super bantamweight.”

In the 8-round co-main event, a battle of undefeated super lightweights commenced as Ruben Torres (17-0, 14 KOs) remained unbeaten as he defeated Francisco Armenta (12-1, 4 KOs) by way of a fourth-round knockout.

Torres came out firing and looked sensational from the opening round, landing powerful blows to the head and body. Armenta had a few moments where he landed some nice left hooks but Torres steam rolled him, dropping him twice in round three, and again in round four. Armenta’s corner seen enough and stopped the fight at .56 mark of round four.

“I felt very strong going into this fight and all the hard work I put into the camp was on display.” stated Torres. “I feel like next year will be a year where more people will start to see me as one of the top prospects in boxing. I’m still learning but I’m getting better as my career develops. 2022 will be a big year for me.”

In a super featherweight division crossroads fight, Brandon Benitez (18-2, 7 KOs) defeated Anthony Chavez (9-2-1, 3 KOs). In the first round, Benitez dropped Chavez with a jab to set the tone of the fight. Benitez was the one forcing the action as he applied a tremendous amount of pressure, forcing Chavez to fight on the inside. Chavez was landing some clean shots, but it was Benitez who was doing the most damage with his all-out attack. Benitez outworked Chavez throughout the fight and scored an unanimous decision. Scorecards read 77-74 and 79-72 twice.

“This was a huge win and its going to help me get closer a big fight,” Benitez stated. “I’ve been training hard and I’m proving my self to be on a world class level. I know if I continue to work hard, I’ll put my self in position to fight a top name. I was very happy with my performance.”

In a scheduled 6-round super bantamweight bout, Manuel Flores (11-0, 9 KOs) defeated a game Leonardo Torres (9-15-1, 5 KOs). Flores who fights out of the southpaw stance, thoroughly dominated the fight, but it wasn’t as easy as it looked on paper. Torres fought with a lot of heart but couldn’t withstand the pounding that Flores was giving him. Flores dropped Torres with a vicious body shot in round four and the fight was stopped at the 2:50 mark.

“I came out and did what I envisioned and got the knockout,” said Flores. “I was in control the whole fight until I stopped him. I feel like I’m taking my career to the next level with all the dedication I’m putting into my career. Soon I’ll be ready to fight any of the top prospects in my division.”

In the opening bout of the night, super bantamweight, Ivan Zarate (3-0, 1 KO) annihilated Roberto Rodriguez (1-1, 1 KO). Zarate dropped Rodriguez with an overhand right just 10 seconds into the contest, then again with a straight right at the 50 second mark. Rodriguez couldn’t get up and the fight was over.”

“My power showed up tonight as I wanted to make a statement in this fight.” said Zarate. “This guy was undefeated coming into this fight, so I wanted to show everyone that I’m on another level. This was my first knockout and it felt great.”

Here is what Saul Sanchez had to say about his recent training camp, his matchup with Estrella, and more.

On his recent training camp.
“I’ve been working really hard with my head trainer Manny Robles and his assistants. Together we put in the hard work that will show when I step in the ring this Friday. At this point in my career there is no room for error, so I’ve taken my training to the next level. I’m in great shape and I’m getting better as a fighter every time I step in the ring.”

On his matchup with Jose Estrella.
“On paper, it is easy to not be excited, but I know he faced former world champion Luis Nery, and that is someone down the road I could face, and as a potential world champion, these are the tests you will face. I’m expecting a tough fight and I know Estrella is coming to win. I must control the action from the opening round. My goal will always be to end the fight before the final bell.”

On what 2022 will look like for him.
“Honestly, I know I am ready for a world title or a title eliminator and now it just comes down to when I get the chance, I have to take it. I have been at this for a very long-time, and done it at a high-level for over a decade, and next year I want to prove I am one of the best in the world.”

On headlining Thompson Boxing’s final event of the year.
“Thompson Boxing isn’t just my promoter, they’re family. They believed in me, even when I lost, and have gotten me the right fights at the right times to get me to where I need to go. Now that I’m in a position to fight for a world title, each and every fight I have on their shows is even that much more special. This is a good way to end my year. I defeated Mario Hernandez on a card around this time last year, and now to end the year with momentum after a huge year will allow me even bigger opportunities next year. I am not looking past my opponent, but I am looking to make a statement.”

Berchelt stops Roman in 9 Brutal rounds to retain Super Featherweight title

It was billed to be a toe-to-toe action fight, and it lived up to it as Miguel Berchelt beatdown a game Miguel Roman to retain the WBC Super Featherweight title via 9th round stoppage at The Don Haskins Cinvention Center in El Paso, Texas.

The two landed heavy punches over the 1st part of the fight that saw several phone booth exchanges, with Brerchelt getting the better of the action.

In round six, Berchelt finally cracked Roman as he landed a hard right hand that sent Roman to the canvas.  Seconds later it was a quick left-right combination that sent Roman down for a 2nd time.

Berchelt continued to pound away on Roman.  The fight could have been stopped several times if not for Roman showing a tremendous heart and landing a right hand to keep him in the fight.

Roman finally broke for good in round nine as he was dropped by a barrage of punches.  Seconds later, it was another nasty head combination that had referee Jon Schorle stop the bout at 2:58.

Berchelt, 129.6 lbs of Merida,  MEX is 35-1 with 31 knockouts.  Roman, 129.6 lbs of Ciudad Juarez, MEX is 60-13.

“This was the toughest of my four world title defenses,” Berchelt said. “I give my respect to Mickey as an opponent. The key was my body work. He kept getting up and fighting with all of his heart. He’s a valiant Mexican warrior.”

Said Roman: “I feel fine. I gave it 100 percent. I’ll be back.”

Three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga stopped Jose Estrella in round four of their scheduled 10-round featherweight bout.

In round three, Marriaga landed a perfect left to the face that sent Estrella to the canvas.  In round four, it was a hard left to the body that sent Estrella riving in pain on the canvas for the 1-count at 2:43.

Marriaga, 126.5 lbs of Cartagena, COL is 27-3 with 23 knockouts.  Estrella, 126 1/4 lbs of Tijuana. MEX is 20-15-1.

“He was a very tough and strong opponent,” Marriaga said. “I know he trained hard for this fight, but I trained harder. In the end, my experience was key in getting the victory. The plan was to attack the body and that’s exactly what I did. I knocked him out with a huge left hook to the body.

“I know that I have what it takes to become a world champion. I want to challenge for another world title!”

Robson Conceicao won an eight-round unanimous decision over Joey Laviolette in a super featherweight bout.

Conceicao, 130 1/4 lbs of Bahia, BRA won by scores of 80-72 on all cards, and is now 10-0.  Laviolette, 129.5 lbs of Sackville, CAN is 9-2.

Conceicao said: “This is my second bout fighting eight rounds and I felt great. I always train hard and I am always in great physical condition. I feel like I’m prepared to go the 12-round distance. I want to face the best. I’m ready to battle against the champions of the junior lightweight division. I want Tevin Farmer, Miguel Berchelt, Alberto Machado, or Gervonta Davis. I don’t care who it is. I want a title!”

Saul Rodriguez remained undefeated with a 2nd round stoppage over Claudio Tapia in a scheduled 10-round lightweight bout.

In round one, Rodriguez landed a left to the body that put Tapia on a knee.  Tapia’s left eye began to swell really badly.  In round two, it was a left hook that sent Tapia to canvas.  Seconds later a right hand ended things when Rodriguez scored a 3rd knockdown at 1:57.

Rodriguez, 135 3/4 lbs of Riverside, CA is 22-0-1 with 16 knockouts.  Tapia, 137 lbs of Ciudad Mendoza, ARG is 28-19-4.

Rodriguez said: “I was anxious and excited to get back in there after such a long time out of the ring. It was a long time coming, but I did what I had to do and got the job done.”

Nicklaus Flaz took an exciting eight-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Sagadat Rakhmankul in a welterweight bout.

In round four, Flaz landed a hard right that sent Rakhmankul to the canvas.  Rakhmankul came back in round five to land some crushing shots that rocked Flaz all over the ring, and even open a cut over Flaz’s right eye.

The two pounded it out in the last round with Flaz hammerimg Rakhmankul and almost scoring a knockdown.

Flaz, 147 1/2 lbs of Vaga Alta, PR won by scores of 78-73, 77073 and 76-75 and is now 6-1.  Rakhmankul, 147.25 lbs of Oxnard, CA is 3-1.

“I am excited to be back on a great card, and I look forward to winning impressively and getting back to world title contention,” Marriaga said. “There are a lot of great featherweights out there, and I am here to prove that I am one of them.”

Marriaga (26-3, 22 KOs) proved he belonged at the world-class level in 2017 with a pair of valiant efforts in championship bouts. He battled WBO featherweight champion Valdez, pushing the budding superstar en route to a competitive unanimous decision defeat. He then moved up four pounds to challenge pound-for-pound elite Lomachenko for the WBO junior lightweight title, losing via seventh-round TKO. He returned to action on May 12 in Colombia, knocking out Derlinson Buriel in the fourth round.

In other undercard action:

Saul “Neno” Rodriguez (21-0-1, 15 KOs) will return from a 20-month layoff to face Claudio Tapia (28-18-4, 13 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight bout.

Sagadat Rakhmankul (3-0, 1 KO), the Egis Klimas-managed prospect who is training out of the Boxing Laboratory in Oxnard, Calif., will fight Nicklaus Flaz (5-1, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder at welterweight.

Janibek Alimkhanuly (3-0, 1 KO), also known as “Johnny 2 Guns”, will fight the talented Vaughn Alexander (12-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder at super middleweight. Alimkhanuly last fought Sept. 28 and shut out Carlos Galvan over six rounds.

El Paso-born middleweight prospect Zach Prieto (3-0, 2 KOs) will fight Michael Andrews (1-2, 0 KOs) in a four-rounder.

Philadelphia native Paul Krool (1-0, 1 KOs) will look to make it two in a row against an opponent to be determined in a four-round welterweight bout.
