Ortiz stops Salgado in 3

Vergil Ortiz, Jr. remained unblemished with a 3rd round stoppage over former two-time world champion Juan Carlos Salgado in a junior welterweight at The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles.

Ortiz battered Salgado and then landed a perfect left to the liver that sent Salgado down, amd the bout was stopped at 1:51.

Ortiz, 139.4 lbs of Dallas, TX is 10-0 with all wins coming by knockout. Salgado, 139.8 lbs of Mexico City is 27-9-1.

“I felt I was posed in there,” said Vergil Ortiz Jr. “Salgado has a lot of experience, and he showed it. He got me a few times, but I learned from this fight, and I’m thankful for the opportunity. I want to continue facing experienced fighters like Salgado. Obviously, I’m not ready for a world title fight yet, but in two years I will be. The left hook to the body is definitely my best punch. I’ve been working on it since I was a kid. It’s not common for an amateur to be dropping his opponents at only nine years old, but that’s what I was doing and what I’m still doing today.”

Hector Tanajara, Jr. won an eight-round unanimous decision over Roger Gutierrez in a lightweight bout.

In round eight, Gutierrez was cut around the left eye.

Tanajara, 135 lbs of San Antonio, TX won by scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 78-74 to raise his mark to 14-0. Gutierrez, 134.2 lbs of Maracaibo, VEN is 18-2-1.

“He came out swinging, so I had to stay composed in there,” said Hector Tanajara Jr. “I had to listen to my corner and stay tight. Every time a round ended, my corner would tell me to not take any risks early in the fight, so I stuck to the game plan in order to win.”

Ferdinand Kerobyan stopped Edgar Garcia in round two of a scheduled six-round super welterweight bout.

Kerobyan landed a hard flurry of punches that sent Garcia to the canvas in round two, and the bout was stopped at 2:48.

Kerobyan, 154 lbs of North Hollywood, CA is 9-0 with 5 knockouts. Garcia, 150.4 lbs of Sonora, MEX is 7-17-1.

“I wanted to show that not only am I powerful, but I’m also very fast,” said Ferdinand Kerobyan. “I never consider any opponent easy, especially since anyone in the ring can hurt you if you’re not careful. I want a world title in the future, and I’m ready to do what’s necessary to get that.”

VERGIL ORTIZ JR AND OSCAR ‘EL JAGUAR’ NEGRETE LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES,

LOS ANGELES (June 12, 2018): Vergil Ortiz Jr. (9-0, 9 KOs), the rising knockout artist and pride of Dallas, Texas, hosted a media workout at Westside Boxing Club ahead of his fight against former world champion Juan Carlos Salgado (27-8-1, 16 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight fight in the main event of the June 23 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, Calif.

In the co-main event, Hector “Finito” Tanajara Jr. (13-0, 5 KOs) of San Antonio, Texas will clash against previously undefeated Roger Gutierrez (18-1-1, 15 KOs) of Maracaibo, Venezuela in an eight-round lightweight battle. Ferdinand Kerobyan (8-0, 4 KOs), of North Hollywood, Calif., will battle across a scheduled six rounds of super welterweight action in the night’s swing bout.

Here’s what the fighters had to say at today’s workout:

VERGIL ORTIZ JR, NABF Jr. Super Lightweight Champion:

“This will be a dangerous fight if I don’t go in with the right mentality. Salgado is a very experienced fighter, but I’m also very experienced. Though I don’t have a lot of fights as a professional, I had a lot as an amateur, and I’ve been sparring with a lot of world champions. He can’t show me anything I haven’t already seen. This main event opportunity will get my name out there more, and I’m looking forward to putting on a great show.”

“I’m training with Robert Garcia now, and I’ve been working on using my head more and keeping my composure. I only have a few pounds to make, and I don’t fight until next week. I can make weight tomorrow if I wanted to. I’m going to stay at 140 pounds for a while. Hopefully, I can have all of my future fights as main event.”

HECTOR “EL FINITO” TANAJARA, JR., Lightweight Prospect:

“This is my first televised fight on ESPN, so I’m very excited about that. I know my opponent Roger Gutierrez is coming to win, so he’s going to bring the best of me. I saw his fight against Rene Alvarado, and I know what I have to do. I know I pose more of a threat to him than Alvarado did. I think I have more experience than him because his record was built in Venezuela. He wasn’t used to the competition here. I’m looking to capitalize on that.”

FERDINAND KEROBYAN, Welterweight Prospect:

“This is my first official fight with Golden Boy Promotions. I don’t feel any added pressure now that I’m signed. I know what I’m capable of, and I know what I have to do in there. I’ll be fighting and staying at 154 pounds, but you never know what the future holds. If the opportunity presents itself to fight at 147 pounds for a belt, then I’ll drop down to welterweight. I’m happy to be with Golden Boy Promotions because they share the same vision as me: to move forward. Hopefully I can fight for a championship title within a year or two.”

Fighters from the July 6 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB also participated in the workout. NABF Bantamweight Champion Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete (17-1, 7 KOs) will return in an eight-round bantamweight fight against Dhiul Olguin (13-9-3, 9 KOs) in the main event. The fight will take place at the Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, Calif. and will televised live on EstrellaTV’s Boxeo Estelar.

Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (13-0, 3 KOs) will return in the co-main event in an eight-round flyweight fight against a soon-to-be announced opponent. Former Olympian Raul “Cougar” Curiel (3-0, 2 KOs) will participate in the first televised fight in a six-round welterweight clash. Opponents for both will be announced shortly.

Here’s what the fighters had to say at today’s workout:

OSCAR “EL JAGUAR” NEGRETE, NABF Bantamweight Champion:

“Obviously, I’m more comfortable at my natural weight of 118 pounds. What happened in December [against Rey Vargas] was a great opportunity in a new division. I couldn’t say no to a world championship fight. Now I’m back at 118 pounds where I’ll be looking for a world title shot. My last fight gave me a lot of confidence because I did so well, and I didn’t even get hurt. Olguin is a great fighter. I saw him fight Emilio Sanchez, and he surprised me. He made it a tough fight. This kind of battle motivates me because he’s such a tough fighter. He’s going to come with everything to test me. Plus, he really wants to win, and when two people want the victory, it always makes for a great fight. I want fans to know that they can’t miss this fight.”

SENIESA “SUPER BAD” ESTRADA, Light Flyweight Prospect:

“It feels great to be active and staying busy this year with Golden Boy promotion. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the years to come. I was very happy that I got the opportunity to fight on ESPN and win my last fight with a TKO victory. This upcoming fight people will see another exciting performance. I’m always working towards an even better performance than the one before and improving on different things so that my fans see the best of me.”

RAUL “COUGAR” CURIEL, Welterweight Prospect:

“I feel good. People know me, and they know how I fight. I’m with Freddie Roach now and I feel great. I’m really happy to work under a legend like him. Freddie is a trainer who has a lot to teach. He always notices details that can help me get better. We make a great team, and we’re working on a new style. We’re moving a lot in the ring, and people will see a new Raul Curiel on July 6”

SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT KNOCKOUT ARTIST VERGIL ORTIZ JR TO BATTLE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION JUAN CARLOS SALGADO IN MAIN EVENT OF JUNE 23 GOLDEN BOY BOXING ON ESPN AT BELASCO THEATER

LOS ANGELES (May 31, 2018): Vergil Ortiz Jr. (9-0, 9 KOs), the rising knockout artist and pride of Dallas, Texas, will battle former world champion Juan Carlos Salgado (27-8-1, 16 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight fight in main event of the June 23 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. Doors for the event open at 3:00 p.m. PT, and the first fight begins at 3:30 p.m. PT. ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes will air the fights beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. ESPN3 will live stream undercards beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Since debuting as a professional in 2016, Ortiz Jr. has never heard the final bell of a fight, and he hopes to retain his 100% knockout rate this year. This sensational Mexican American, who has his roots in Michoacan, Mexico, will return after capturing the Junior NABF 140-pound title via third-round technical knockout victory against Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez in the co-main event of the Feb. 22 edition of Golden Boy Boxing onESPN. Ortiz Jr. is excited about stepping up in competition so that he can demonstrate that he will be world champion one day.

“This is an amazing opportunity,” said Vergil Ortiz Jr. “I’ll be headlining a Golden Boy event for the first time and against a former world champion. I’ve stopped all my opponents in my career, and I hope to do the same in my toughest fight yet. Make sure to not miss my fight on June 23 at the Belasco Theater!”

Salgado is a rugged former world champion who in his prime defeated a who’s who of some of the best fighters in recent years. After a stellar start to his career, Salgado defeated Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares via first-round technical knockout to capture his first world title. Salgado would lose his title to longtime holder Takashi Uchiyama, though he would win his second world title two years later against Martin “El Brochas” Honorio. The 33-year-old puncher has also fought the likes of former world champion Argenis Mendez and world title contender Miguel “Mickey” Roman in his career. Because of his experience, Salgado is confident he will upset the rising young pugilist in Ortiz Jr.

“I know that people think that I’ll yet another stepping stone for Vergil Ortiz Jr.”, said Juan Carlos Salgado. “But I want to tell everyone that they’re wrong. Mexicans do not back down, and it’s very tough for us to give up a loss. I’ve done away with predictions before, and this fight will not be the exception. You will all see a great fight on June 23 in Los Angeles.”

Tanajara Jr. is staying very busy as he returns for the third time this year against a dangerous opponent in Gutierrez, a fighter who has only one loss and is coming off four stoppage wins.

Ferdinand Kerobyan (8-0, 4 KOs), of North Hollywood, Calif., will battle Israel Villela (6-10, 2 KOs) of Cancun, Mexico across a scheduled six rounds of super welterweight action in the night’s swing bout. This Armenian-born prospect looks to follow in footsteps of his successful countrymen Vic Darchinyan, Arthur Abraham, Vanes Martirosyan, Artyom Simonyan and Azat Hovhannisyan. Kerobyan is one of the latest prospects to join exclusive Golden Boy Promotions stable and the first fighter under the management of former UFC fighter and current WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey.

Kevin Ventura (8-0, 7 KOs) of Omaha, Neb. will participate in a six-round super lightweight fight, while Kanat Islam (25-0, 20 KOs) of Oxnard, Calif. will fight in a 10-round super welterweight fight. Opponents for both fighters will be announced shortly.

Ortiz Jr. vs Salgado is a 10-round super lightweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions. CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLEHEADER HEADS TO FOX DEPORTES ON JUNE 29

LOS ANGELES, June 28 – Three of Mexico’s finest young stars take to the ring at the General Arteaga Auditorium of Queretaro on Saturday, June 29, for “Tercia De Ases” (Trio of Aces), a hard-hitting tripleheader to air live on FOX DEPORTES.

In the 10 round main event, IBF female bantamweight world champion Yazmin “La Rusita” Rivas defends her crown against Japanese contender Kimika Miyoshi. But the championship action doesn’t stop there, as Toluca’s Ibeth “La Roca” Zamora puts her WBC female junior flyweight title on the line against Culiacan’s Maricela “La Baby” Quintero, and in the 12 round super flyweight opener, NABF champion Jose “Sugar” Salgado of Cozumel takes on Japan’s Toyoto Shiraishi.

“Tercia De Ases” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 7 p.m. CT. The FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. The Televisa broadcast begins at 10:30 p.m. CT. The action will take place in Apatzingan, Michoacan at the Adolfo Lopez Sport Center.

Torreon’s Yazmin Rivas (27-7, 9 KOs) has been competing professionally since 2001, quickly earning the respect of boxing insiders and fans with her hard-fought 2004 bout with Jackie Nava and her first title winning effort against Lucia Avalos for the WBA super flyweight title in 2005. After a 2011 stint on a popular reality show in which she went 3-0-1, the 25-year-old won the IBF bantamweight title with a decision win over 21-0 Susie Ramadan, and she has gone on to successfully defend her belt four times.

Fighting out of Kanagawa, Japan, 29-year-old Kimika Miyoshi (8-5-1, 3 KOs) bounced back from a rocky 3-5-1 start to her pro career to run off five consecutive victories, earning her a shot at Rivas’ title. In her most recent bout, on February 27, Miyoshi won the OPBF bantamweight belt with an eight round win over Riyo Togo.

A fighter unafraid of any challenge, Ibeth Zamora (17-5, 7 KOs) has been competing for titles as a pro since her third bout, when she lost a 10 round decision to Esmeralda Moreno. Three fights later though, she won the Mexican title, going on to add the interim WBA and WBC Youth belts to her resume. In March of this year, the talented 24-year-old took the vacant WBC junior flyweight title by decisioning Naoko Shibata, and on June 29 she will defend it for the first time.

Maricela Quintero (11-3-1) is a veteran of nearly five years in the pro game, and she is unbeaten in seven of her last eight bouts, with the only loss being a decision to former WBC 108-pound champion Esmeralda Moreno last November. Since then, Zamora has picked up the vacated crown, and Quintero has every intention of taking it when they meet later this month.

Despite being just 24 years old, Jose “Sugar” Salgado (31-2-1, 26 KOs) has done more than most boxers his age, and he’s just getting started. A pro since 2007 with 34 fights to his name, Salgado has won several regional titles, with the NABF 115-pound crown his latest conquest. Fresh off two successful defenses of the NABF belt, Salgado hopes that a win over Shiraishi will open the door for a 2013 world title shot.

Japanese veteran Toyoto Shiraishi (23-7-1, 11 KOs) is unquestionably one of Salgado’s stiffest tests, and the 27-year-old from Tokyo has every intention of leaving Mexico with a victory on June 29. Winner of two of his last three, the hard-nosed NABF title challenger has the skill and will to put on a memorable performance against the rising Mexican star.

Argenis Mendez gets second chance at Juan Carlos Salgado to become Acquinity Sports’ first World Champion

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (March 6, 2013) – Top contender Argenis “The Thunderstorm” Mendez (20-2, 10 KOs) gets another shot at International Featherweight Boxing (IBF) Juan Carlos Salgado (26-1-1, 16 KOs) on Saturday night (March 9) in the 12-round main event, live on HBO Latino from The Hanger in Costa Mesa, California.

Mendez recently returned from an eight-week training camp with his trainer, Lee Beard, in England.

“I’ve been working hard to get ready for this fight,” Mendez said. “I’m excited to be fighting once again for the world title and on HBO Latino. I’m going to take care of unfinished business. I’m not going to leave the final result in the hands of the judges this time. I’m coming back with the belt for my family and team, Acquniity Sports, and my country, Dominican Republic.”

Mendez earned his title shot in the Salgado rematch, as the 2004 Dominican Republic Olympian did the first time around, winning IBF title eliminators to become the mandatory challenger again. In 2011, Mendez easily won a 12-round unanimous decision (117-110, 117-110, 117-111) over Cassius Baloyi (37-5-1) in South Africa.

Eight months later, Mendez challenged Salgado in his native Mexico, dropping a closely contested and controversial 12-round decision (114-112, 114-112, 115-110), in which Mendez decked Salgado in the final round.

Mendez, now living in Miami, bounced right back, winning a 12-round unanimous decision (117-109, 116-110, 115-111) from Martin Honorio (32-7-1) last July in another IBF title eliminator. Honorio is the only common opponent for Mendez and Salgado; the Dominican having won a pair of 12-round decisions, the Mexican one.

Mendez can become Acquiniity Sports’ first world champion. “I’m very happy with Mendez’ progress and I’m very confident that he will become our first world champion this Saturday night,” Acquinity Sports CEO Gary Jonas commented.

“Our business started a little more than a year ago and Mendez will be our first world champion,” added an equally confident Henry Rivalta, Acquinity Sports’ Vice President of Boxing Operations. “In the first fight, Mendez should have done a little more early in the fight. He beat-up Salgado near the end of the fight, but the judges must not have felt that he did enough to beat the defending world champion in his home country. Mendez doesn’t plan for this fight to go the full distance. He’s in great shape after going through a rigorous training camp with his trainer, Lee Beard. Salgado won’t be fighting the same Mendez this Saturday night. Argenis is hungry and eager. He felt that he won the last fight and believes he’ll win this fight.

“Fighters don’t get many opportunities like this and Mendez is going into the fight to knockout Salgado. He dominated the fight against Honorio to win the IBF title eliminator and become Salgado’s mandatory challenger. We’re proud of Argenis for all the hard work he’s put in and behind him 100-percent. He has a great team with Lee and his manager, Jose Nunez. We’re ready to celebrate with a parade back home when Mendez becomes world champion.”

Mendez was also a world-class amateur boxer, compiling an eye-opening 238-13 record, highlighted by a gold-medal performance in the 2005 Pan-American Games. He captured a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships.

Salgado and Mendez are rated No. 2 and No. 7, respectively, by The Ring Magazine.

Mendez’ fellow countryman and stable-mate, Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman, captured world titles in two weight classes prior to signing a promotional contract with Acquinity Sports. Guzman, however, will fight Vincente “El Loco” Mosquera, tentatively scheduled for May 31, for the Interim World Boxing Association super lightweight title.

ARREOLA vs. STIVERNE WBC HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE ELIMINATION

chris-arreola2
LOS ANGELES (Jan. 22) – On Saturday, March 9, Riverside’s Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (35-2, 30 KOs) takes on the heavy-hitting Haitian Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KOs) in a heavyweight battle with the winner guaranteed to fight for the WBC Heavyweight World Championship in his next bout. Both Arreola and Stiverne will look to put their power on display to take that next step toward history.

The Arreola-Stiverne showdown will be televised on HBO® World Championship Boxing at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. This will also mark the first HBO® boxing event to be held at the world-famous Orange County Fairgrounds & Event Center, home to the newly built 23,000 square foot building The Hangar.

“Boxing fans can look forward to an exciting night of action on HBO® with the heavyweight showdown between Cristobal Arreola and Bermane Stiverne,” said Kery Davis, Senior Vice President of Programming, HBO® Sports.

The Arreola-Stiverne fight shapes up as a bout unlikely to go the distance given the knockout rates of both combatants. Arreola, 31, has stopped all but five of his 35 victims, while the 34-year old Stiverne – whose only loss on his impressive record came more than five years and 11 fights ago – has allowed only two of his 22 conquests to hear the final bell.

The co-featured bout is a rematch between two-time World Champion Juan Carlos Salgado (26-1-1, 16 KOs) of Mexico City against the #1 world contender and mandatory challenger, Argenis Mendez (20-2, 10 KOs) of the Dominican Republic in a 12-round IBF Jr. Lightweight World Championship bout.

Tickets priced at $250, $150, and $75 and will go on sale Friday, January 25 at 8 a.m. online at www.fightcluboc.com and irma@goossentutor.com or by calling 818-817-8001.

An injury earlier this year limited Arreola’s activity in 2012 to one fight – a first round KO of Eric Molina in February. Stiverne matched Arreola’s 2012 bouts posting a win (via unanimous decision) against Willie Herring in April.

“Prior to Chris’ injury, he kept a very unheard of pace for a heavyweight, registering five wins in 2011 and a February bout in 2012. This is the type of determination Chris has shown fighting his way back to his goal of becoming heavyweight world champion,” his promoter, Goossen Tutor’s Dan Goossen said. “He’s been incredible staying in the gym and keeping his weight under control. I’ve said for years he’s one of the most exciting fighters in the world, and now with his desire to be in tip-top shape, he’s now one of the most dangerous fighters today.”

The always-entertaining Arreola was thrilled to learn the fight will be in front of his hometown fans in California, “I’m going to make 2013 my year. I’m thrilled to be back on HBO and fighting someone worthy and good in Stiverne. He’s a tough fighter but my will and strength will break him down. I’m not going to let anyone stand in my way!”

An irritated Stiverne said about the fight with Arreola, “It should have been done a long time ago.” “I don’t know what he’s been doing besides running from me. I’m looking forward to the fight. He is nothing that I can’t deal with. I’ll get the job done. I’m not concerned about a knockout. We have a plan that we want to execute. If the knockout comes, it comes.”

“It’ll be a great fight between Arreola and Stiverne,” Stiverne’s promoter, Don King, predicted. “It’s the next step in bringing the world championship back to America. The fight is a must see.”

Back on September 10, 2011, Salgado was on the winning end of what many thought was a very tough bout against Mendez for the vacant IBF title in Mexico.

The victory over Mendez made Salgado a two-time world champion previously winning the title in 2009 over then undefeated Jorge Linares with a devastating first round knockout. His reign was short-lived the first time around when he lost his belt in his first defense against Takashi Uchiyama, the still reigning world champion.

Salgado said, “I’m excited to defend my title in California. Mendez has been doing a lot of talking but it won’t help him when I beat him for a second time on March 9.”

Salgado’s promoter, Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo, said of their first fight, “Salgado-Mendez I was a thriller. The 12th round was a historic round, and I can’t wait to see round 1 of the rematch.” “Both fighters fought their hearts out, and now, besides the IBF belt on the line, they’ve made it personal, especially knowing the winner will be on the road to huge fights in this division.”

Mendez gets his second shot at the title after soundly beating Martin Honorio for the #1 rating in the IBF and the mandatory shot at Salgado and is anxious to start the bout from the end of the first fight with Salgado when he scored a knockdown in the 12th round but was unable to finish the job.

“I let Salgado off the hook last fight and I won’t make the same mistake again. I will make sure that the belt is around my waist at the end this time. The people of the Dominican Republic will have a new champion come March 9th,” stated the confident challenger.

“Boxing fans love the heavyweights and we have two of the best and biggest knockout punchers in the business going toe-to-toe,” Goossen stated. “Chris is determined to become the first world heavyweight champion of Mexican descent. And with Salgado-Mendez, you have two of the top Junior Lightweights in a rematch that was a thriller the first time around. It will be a great night of fights at The Hangar.”

The event is being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions. The Arreola-Stiverne bout is presented in association with Don King Productions and the Salgado vs. Mendez bout in association with Promociones del Pueblo and Acquinity Sports. The event is sponsored by Corona.

Doors open at The Hangar at 4:00 p.m. The first non-televised bout starts at 4:30 p.m. The scheduled 12-round bout between Salgado-Mendez will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Arreola-Stiverne 12-round bout immediately after.

The Hangar at the OC Fair & Event Center is the centerpiece of the 150-acre campus. Opened in April of 2010 it was designed with an aviation hangar look, including a 50 foot high ceiling as well as 50 foot high hangar doors that can be rolled back to give The Hangar an indoor/outdoor feel. The Hangar also has a 40 foot high HD Screen. The Hangar can be found at the heart of the OC Fair property in the Main Mall area. The Fair is located at88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.
