LEON BUNN vs. PADRAIG MCCRORY IBO WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP–QUOTES FROM TODAY’S PRESS CONFERENCE

Wasserman Boxing in association with Probellum was proud to present today’s final press conference ahead of the IBO World light heavyweight championship showdown between local hero Leon Bunn and hard-hitting Irishman Padraig McCrory. The world title showdown will take place this Saturday, October 22, at the Fabriksporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany.

LEON BUNN: “I feel great and I’m glad to be here in Frankfurt, in my hometown, to fight for a world title. I’m happy that Wasserman made this a reality. I’ve trained hard for this fight. I’m always in training because I always hoped that an opportunity like this would come across. I gave it my all in camp with Conny these last weeks and I am sure that all the work we’ve done will result in victory on Saturday night. I will do everything I can to win that belt.”

PADRAIG MCCRORY: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me. Leon Bunn is a great fighter, but I’ve come here to win that world title. Traveling doesn’t matter to me, my Irish fans will make for an atmosphere like we’d be fighting at home.”

KALLE SAUERLAND, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman: “It’s great to be back in Germany and to present a world title fight in Germany. This is a true 50/50 fight between two unbeaten fighters with a combined record of 32 wins and no defeats. In boxing, there’s this saying that you don’t want your fighter in the ring against a Mexican or an Irish fighter. But when it’s about a world title, no matter from which organization, you don’t get to choose. You have to take the opportunity that’s presented to you. I’m very confident that Leon will win on Saturday, he’s not just representing himself and his family, but all of Germany. We can expect a cauldron on Saturday in Frankfurt.”

CONNY MITTERMEIER, trainer of Leon Bunn: “We’ve been training for three months, Leon is giving it his all each and every day. He excelled at even the hardest of training sessions. But that’s the path you have to walk when you are fighting for a world title, there are no shortcuts. Leon is in great shape and I’m sure that we will be successful on Saturday.”

JAMIE CONLAN, Team Padraig McCrory: “Camp was brillant. Paddy is an incredible success story in Irish boxing, he is stronger than ever before. You can compare him to a good bottle of wine, he’s getting better with age. He’s stronger, he’s found himself as a fighter and as person. It will be the ultimate test on Saturday night. Obviously, everyone at Wasserman is sure of their man, but I am sure that Paddy will win this fight. He’s got the power in both hands, he’s in incredible shape. Saturday night will be fireworks and a great show for all the fans!”

A world title has been the goal for Lucy Wildheart since day one, as the 29-years old Swedish featherweight star has had her eyes set on world title glory ever since turning professional in 2017. Just last week, she recorded her tenth win as a prizefighter with a six-round shut-out decision over Claudia Ferenczi in Rotherham. Getting there with my team, I’m looking to put a big performance for the boxing fans,“ Lucy Wildheart said. “I’ve been chasing the dream of becoming a world champion for almost 10 years since I set my goal. I believe Frankfurt could be the path to the world title.“

Bantamweight powerhouse and local favorite Bilgenur Aras will try to to excite her hometown fans in her comeback after a 15-month layoff. The hard-hitting 26-years old captured the UBF World bantamweight championship in her last fight, but has not fought since that title winning effort in July 2021. She will try to get back to fighting rhythm against the experienced Oksana Romanova over six rounds in Frankfurt. “I’m very happy about the opportunity to fight on October 22 after more than a year out of the ring,“ Bilgenur Aras said. “It’s an honor for me to be fighting on such a big stage, and I’m very thankful to Wasserman Boxing for the opportunity. It’s amazing to be fighting in Frankfurt, in my hometown. I can’t wait for the support of my fans on fight night, as I know there will be many of them in the arena.“

Promoter Kalle Sauerland added: ”Lucy Wildheart is a strong fighter on the way to a world title. I’m sure she will deliver fireworks on October 22. With Bilgenur Aras, we have another highly talented fighter in the ring in Frankfurt, a true hometown favorite. The fans can expect a great, great show!“

LUCA CINQUEONCIE HAS TO WITHDRAW FROM YOUTH WORLD TITLE FIGHT

IBF and IBO World Youth light heavyweight champion Luca Cinqueoncie had to withdraw from his scheduled rematch with Leon Maric due to a sudden illness. The fight was to take place on the undercard of the IBO World light heavyweight championship showdown between Leon Bunn and Padraig McCrory on October 22 at the Fabriksporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany. The Bunn-McCrory fight is presented by Wasserman Boxing in association with Probellum.

The 21-years old Cinqueoncie started to feel unwell during recent training sessions, with his performance suddenly deteriorating. After an extensive medical check-up, his doctor diagnosed an infection and unusual blood values and ordered further tests to isolate the cause of the findings.

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman, said: “It’s very unfortunate that Luca Cinqueoncie got sick so close to his fight, but we have to follow his doctors advise and cancel the fight. Health always comes first. We wish Luca a quick and full recovery and look forward to working with him in the future.“

Cinqueoncie’s promoter Rainer Gottwald added: ”It’s a sad, sad day for Luca. But I’m sure he will recover soon and celebrate big wins in the ring next year.“

LEON BAUER’S YOUTH WORLD TITLE FIGHT CANCELLED DUE TO COVID INFECTION

Undefeated super middleweight Leon Bauer had to pull out of his IBF/IBO Youth world title fight against unbeaten Columbian Hacel Gonzalez due to complications from a Covid infection. The fight was scheduled to take place on the undercard of the huge IBO World light heavyweight championship between Leon Bunn and Padraig McCrory on October 22 at the Fabriksporthalle in FrankfurtGermany. The Bunn-McCrory showdown is presented by Wasserman Boxing in association with Probellum.

The battle between Bauer and Gonzalez was supposed to take place on September 24 in Ludwigshafen but was postponed to October 22 after Bauer first tested positive for the Corona virus. The 24-years old super middleweight experienced mild symptoms at first and was expected to return to training camp in a matter of days. However, Bauer’s condition worsened over the weekend and he was thus advised by his doctor to take a lengthier break from boxing in order to make a full recovery.

“It’s unfortunate that Leon Bauer won’t be able to step into the ring, but health always comes first and Covid is no joke,“ said promoter Kalle Sauerland. “We wish him a speedy and full recovery!“

“Unfortunately, Leon Bauer’s symptoms worsened over the last couple of days,“ added Bauer’s promoter Rainer Gottwald. “There’s no reason to worry, but he is having slight problems with his lungs and experiences angina-like symptoms. It will take a while until Leon will be able to step back into the ring. We are sorry for the fans, for Hacel Gonzalez and, of course, for Leon, too, but health is the most important thing, which is why we had no choice but to cancel the fight.“

The unbeaten Luca Cinqueoncie from Offenbach, Germany, will put his WBC and IBF Youth World light heavyweight titles on the line against Leon Maric, while Leon Bauer and Hancel Gonzalez are set to collide in battle of the undefeated for the vacant IBF and IBO Youth World super middleweight titles. It will be a rematch between Cinqueoncie and Maric, as they previously fought in May. The German “Rocky“ won the fight on points, but Maric activated a rematch clause to secure another shot at Cinqueoncie. While the fans can certainly expect an explosive rematch between the two light heavyweights, Cinqueoncie does not lack confidence ahead of the fight: “I want to thank Rainer Gottwald and Kalle Sauerland for this opportunity. It’s a huge honor to be fighting on such a big stage, that’s what you dream of as a kid“, he said. “Frankfurt is close to Offenbach and I can’t wait to put on a show for my fans. It’ll be a great fight, but I’ll bring that victory back home!“

In a battle of undefeated super middleweights, 24-years old Leon Bauer from Kandel, Germany, will square off with 21-years old Hancel Gonzalez from Columbia. The vacant IBF and IBO Youth World titles will be on the line. The fight was originally scheduled for September 24 in Ludwigshafen, but Bauer tested positive for Covid ahead of the bout. While he is still isolated at home, Bauer is already feeling better and is ready to resume training in the next couple of days – with the clear goal in mind to be at his very best on October 22 in Frankfurt!

Promoter Kalle Sauerland is excited by the addition of the two Youth world championships to the Frankfurt Fight Night: “It was a pleasure to work with Rainer Gottwald on securing those two exciting title fights! Luca Cinqueoncie and Leon Bauer are highly talented fighters, ready to make their way to the top. Offenbach is not far from Frankfurt, so Luca will have home advantage as well and I’m sure that many of his fans will make the drive to the arena. Everyone is in for a great event on October 22 at the Fabriksporthalle!“

Rainer Gottwald, promoter of both Cinqueoncie and Bauer, cannot wait for the first bell at the Fabriksporthalle either: “Luca and Leon are two tough, strong fighters and they will prove their talent on October 22. It was a great pleasure to work with Kalle and Wasserman Boxing to make this happen. It’s important for German boxing that we all work together and stage big events like this. All the fans from Frankfurt and Offenbach can look forward to an amazing atmosphere on fight night!“

LEON BUNN AND PADRAIG MCCRORY WILL COLLIDE FOR IBO WORLD TITLE ON OCTOBER 22 IN FRANKFURT!

Light heavyweight contender Leon Bunn will have to wait an additional three weeks before finally receiving his long-awaited world title shot! After his original opponent, Daniel Blenda dos Santos, had to pull out of the fight due to an ankle injury, the highly anticipatedevent presented by Wasserman Boxing in association with Probellum at the Fabriksporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, has been rescheduled for October 22. Tickets bought for the original date of October 1 will remain valid.

A new opponent for 28-year-old local hero Leon Bunn has already been found: He will now face unbeaten power-puncher Padraig McCrory from Ireland for the vacant IBO World light heavyweight championship. McCrory, called “The Hammer“, is unbeaten in 14 fights, with 8 big wins by way of knockout, and was scheduled to fight for the EBU-EU title on October 22 in Belfast. However, when the opportunity to fight for a world title came along, he immediately jumped at it.

The undefeated Leon Bunn is unmoved by the change of opponent and date, saying, “I’m glad that we found a new opponent so fast. I have great respect for Padraig McCrory and I certainly won’t overlook him. However, my goal is set in stone: On October 22, I will become champion of the world in front of my fans in Frankfurt – and nobody will stop me! I can’t wait to enter the ring that night.“

Padraig McCrory does not lack confidence either, as he is predicting a knockout win on October 22: “I’m relishing the opportunity to become the IBO World champion, fighting in Leon Bunn’s backyard adds an extra fire in the belly and will make the rewards of winning this title so much sweeter. I’ve seen plenty of Leon Bunn, he’s a really good boxer, but I don’t think he can take my power for 12 rounds.“

Promoter Kalle Sauerland is expecting an exciting and action-packed showdown in Frankfurt: “After dos Santos’ injury, we knew that we had to postpone the event in order to find a suitable opponent for Leon. We did! It’s a big, big chance for Padraig McCrory, he can become world champion. He’s unbeaten, he’s powerful, he has that Irish mentality and all of that makes him a very dangerous opponent. Leon has to be at his absolute best to win the world title in front of his fans on October 22.“

Jamie Conlan, a former world title challenger himself and manager of Padraig McCrory, is confident in his fighters’ ability to return to Ireland with the IBO belt around his waist: “We where planning and preparing for the EU title but this opportunity came up and Pody jumped at it. I totally believe going into the Lions Den will bring out the best in Pody McCrory. Leon is a very good, accomplished boxer and Pody has knockout power in either hand, both guys come in undefeated with great confidence and I believe it will be a very entertaining fight.“

Tickets for the IBO World light heavyweight championship between Leon Bunn and Padraig McCrory presented by Wasserman Boxing in association with Probellum on October 22 at the Fabriksporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, are on sale now and can be bought via Eventim.

BUNN DEFENDS IBF TITLE AGAINST GERMAN RIVAL KOELLING

Leon Bunn (14-0, 8 KOs) will defend his IBF International Light Heavyweight title against German rival Enrico Koelling (26-3, 8 KOs) in a huge domestic showdown on November 2 at the CGM Arena in Koblenz.

Bunn claimed the IBF title with a vicious ninth-round TKO win over Leon Harth on May 4 at the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt, and is looking forward to making his first defence against his former Team Sauerland stablemate Koelling.

Koelling, who represented Germany at the 2012 Olympics, is a former WBA Intercontinental Champion, who challenged Artur Beterbiev for the IBF World title, and most recently fought Dominic Boesel for the European crown.

“My last fight was a special night for me, to headline in front of thousands of fans in my home city was a night I will never forget,” said Bunn.

“I’m looking forward to defending my belt on November 2. Enrico brings a lot of experience into the ring and has shown his talent before. He can say whatever he wants, but I will let my fists do the talking in the ring.

“It’s going to be a great fight that all boxing fans can look forward to. I will defend my title and move on to achieve my next goal. Enrico Koelling cannot stop me!”

“Bunn is overrated. He hits a lot but doesn’t have any power,” says Koelling. “The time of the unbeaten ‘wannabe’ champions is over. A champion is someone who learns from his defeats and grows. Leon will have that chance after we fight.”

Bunn is backed by legendary trainer Ulli Wegner, who has been in the Frankfurt fighter’s corner since his professional debut in 2016.

“It will be an exciting fight and it’s one I’m looking forward to. I know Leon and I know Enrico, both are boxers who are looking to move forward,” said Wegner.

“Leon is unstoppable in my eyes. He wants to go all the way and achieve the maximum success. He has the determination and I am firmly convinced that he will beat Enrico.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland is looking forward to returning to Koblenz following the success of Team Sauerland’s February 16 show at the CGM Arena.

“Leon Bunn against Enrico Koelling is a massive fight for German boxing,” said Bunn’s promoter Nisse Sauerland. “Enrico has fought for the European and World titles and Leon Bunn is one of the most exciting contenders in Germany.

“This is a real 50/50 fight between two of the best German light heavyweights and I can’t wait for fight night!”

17-year-old sensation Sophie Alisch (4-0, 1 KO) will be looking for her fifth victory of the year as she returns to the CGM Arena having made her professional debut in Koblenz in February. Also on the undercard are local stars Slawa Spomer (8-0, 5 KOs), Roman Gorst (5-0, 5 KOs), Hizni Altunkaya (31-3, 18 KOs) and Yasin Altunkaya (14-0, 11 KOs).

BUNN DEFENDS IBF INTERNATIONAL TITLE IN KOBLENZ

Undefeated German light heavyweight Leon Bunn (14-0, 8 KOs) will defend his IBF International title on November 2 at the CGM Arena in Koblenz.

Team Sauerland and Bunn return to the CGM Arena for the second time this year following a successful show on February 16 that saw the 27-year-old Frankfurt-native claim a unanimous points win over Viktor Polyakov (13-6-1, 6 KOs).

BUNN AND HARTH EXCHANGE WORDS AT FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE

Leon Bunn (13-0, 7 KOs) and Leon Harth (18-3, 12 KOs) met today at the final press conference ahead of their IBF International Light Heavyweight title showdown on Saturday at the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt.

Bunn is gunning for first title as he headlines his hometown arena but will face stiff competition from his countryman Harth, who having made the move down from cruiserweight has claimed the IBO International and WBC Asian Light Heavyweight titles in his last two contests.

“There are no doubts about my victory, very good sparring partners, great preparation, no weight problems,” said Harth. “My switch from cruiser to light heavyweight was the best thing I could do – Leon Bunn will feel that on Saturday and I will take the belt to Munich.”

Leon Bunn was equally confident. “I’m boxing at home, my fans will drive me to victory, there’s no doubt about that,” Bunn said. “I’ll never stop. The title will remain in Frankfurt and I can’t wait for it to start.”

Harth’s head coach Alexander Bich believes his knowledge of Bunn will help his fighter become victorious. “I know Leon Bunn from the amateurs,” said Bich. “He is certainly a good boxer, but on Saturday Leon Harth will prevail, there is no doubt.”

Legendary trainer Ulli Wegner has other ideas. “We want and must win, said Wegner, who celebrated his birthday earlier this week. “I am looking forward to the fight, but I am very sorry for Leon Harth’s team. I like his team and himself and he’s a good boxer, but it will definitely be a win for Leon Bunn, even if it’s going to be a close fight.”

Harth’s promoter, Alexander Petkovic shared his thoughts. “You are playing great football here in Frankfurt and I hope that Eintracht will win against Chelsea today, but on Saturday the city of Frankfurt and Team Sauerland will lose,” said Petkovic. “The IBF International title will be ours!”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland reflected on Team Sauerland’s last promotion in Frankfurt. “I like to remember the fight between Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Steve Cunningham, I expect a similarly great fight between Leon Bunn and Leon Harth,” said Sauerland. “I’m sure that Leon Bunn will win the fight and get his first title. the Fraport Arena will be a cauldron and boxing fans in Frankfurt can look forward to many more great fights!”

BUNN FACES HARTH FOR IBF TITLE IN FRANKFURT

Leon Bunn (13-0, 7 KOs) will face Leon Harth (18-3, 12 KOs) for the IBF International Light Heavyweight title on May 4 at the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt.

Bunn tops the bill in his hometown as Team Sauerland return to the Fraport Arena for the first time in seven years following a memorable cruiserweight showdown between Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Steve Cunningham in 2012.

The 26-year-old from Frankfurt is back in action after a unanimous points win over Viktor Polyakov on February 16 in Koblenz, and will have the chance to claim his first professional title as he goes toe-to-toe with countryman Harth.

“I would like to thank my promoter Team Sauerland for the opportunity and the confidence they’ve shown in me,” said the highly rated light heavyweight.

“To fight for my first title in my hometown is amazing! I’m looking forward to a great evening with a great atmosphere. Everyone knows that my fans support me everywhere I am boxing, but here in Frankfurt, it’s going to be even better!

“It’s time to step up. I want to climb the rankings and box for the big titles, and to do that I have to beat Leon Harth, even though I know he’s very strong.”

Having campaigned at cruiserweight, Harth has returned to light heavyweight, where he remains undefeated, and has captured the IBO Continental and WBC Asia 175lb titles in his last two contests.

The only blemishes on the Detmold-boxer’s resume come from defeats to former World Champions Murat Gassiev and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, and World title challenger Artur Mann, who meets Kevin Lerena for the IBO crown on March 16.

“It’s great that my promoter Petko’s Box Promotion with Team Sauerland has been able to agree this fight,” said Harth. “Leon Bunn is a good boxer with a good amateur pedigree, but I have fought at a higher level. My switch from cruiserweight down to light heavyweight has also served me well. Here, I can play to my strengths much better, as Leon Bunn will find out on May 4.”

Harth’s promoter Alexander Petkovic adds: “We worked very well with Team Sauerland at last June’s Petko’s Fight Night, and the negotiations for this fight were just as simple, within 24 hours we were in agreement. This is exactly the type of fight we have to deliver for the German audience. We know that Leon Bunn is a strong boxer and his fans will support him in many ways, but our Leon will fight bravely and produce a big fight for all boxing fans, I promise!”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland says: “Leon Harth will provide a tough test for Leon Bunn, but if he wants to step up, he must be prepared to face tougher opponents, and Harth is a tough opponent. I am very happy that Harth and Petko’s Boxing Promotions have accepted this fight. We look forward to returning to Frankfurt for an action-packed evening of boxing, and we will be announcing some great fights for the undercard in the coming weeks!”
