LOS ANGELES (July 8) – Fighters on the July 11 HBO Latino ® card held a final media workout today at Westside Boxing Club in anticipation of their respective bouts at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. In attendance, the main event fighters, Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera and “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy, not only showed off for the cameras but also exchanged a few heated words ahead of their anticipated bout.

Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. and Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado, who are scheduled to open up the HBO Latino telecast, attended the event and were joined by fighters featured in the non-televised undercard including Nick Arce, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez and Jesus Ivan Delgado.

Below are the fighters’ finals thought about their upcoming bouts on July 11.

Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera, Former Interim WBA Super Lightweight Champion:

“I feel great. I feel prepared and ready to beat Lundy and if he wants to brawl, box or do whatever, I’m ready. I feel there is a big possibility that I can stop him.”

“Hammerin'” Hank Lundy, Super Lightweight Title Contender:

“He [Herrera] may have beaten another Philly fighter, Danny Garcia, but he’s got to realize I’m another type of animal. I’m a throwback fighter and on Saturday, Herrera is going to see what Hammerin’ Hank is all about.”

Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr, Featherweight Prospect:

“My dad and I have had a great training camp and I feel great. Working on sitting down on my shots and my power in general has been a huge focus for us. This fight is really important because I feel it will set up the future of where I stand in the division. My goal is to be fighting for a title a year from now and that will all come down to Saturday night.”

Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado, Former WBC Silver Featherweight Champion:

“I’ve worked hard to prepare for this matchup. He [Diaz Jr.] is a good fighter, but I feel comfortable and calm. I have been working on my speed and focusing on fighting intelligently and I think that will be the difference in the fight.”

Nick Arce, Featherweight Prospect:

“I feel stronger. The physical training and conditioning during camp has been great and I feel comfortable with our game plan. Training has been great and I cannot wait to put on a show for all the fans. If I can keep my knockout streak that would be great but fighting smart is a huge part of our game plan.”

Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Super Featherweight Prospect:

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring. We took a short break after my last fight and then went right back to work, working on a lot of the things that helped me win. Obviously my goal is to win but also in a way that makes it exciting for the fans.”

Jesus Ivan Delgado, Super Featherweight Prospect:

“I’m excited. I’ve been sparring a lot working my speed and power and I feel great. I’m ready to make a big impression on my fans in my hometown and show my skills. I think my style and versatility gives me a great advantage in this fight.”

“If you have never seen Michael Perez, you don’t want to miss this. He is an exciting fighter to watch. He is a hard fighter to handle.

“The best fighters have to fight the best. The only way you can do that is work with others. We have a great partner with CES Promotions for this fight July 11.

“Bernard Hopkins has always told us at Golden Boy Promotions, ‘you have to check out that hammer kid, that ‘Hammerin” Hank Lundy.’ He always talked about how dedicated he is, how serious he is about boxing. He comes from a tough town and they take their sports very seriously in Philadelphia.

“Herrera and Lundy are both top contenders knocking on the door for a world title. All that makes for a good fight. They are going to bring all that emotion in to the ring.”

Patrick Sullivan, Director of Operations at CES Boxing:

“I want to compliment the staff at Golden Boy. They are the best in boxing to work with.

“I urge everyone to come out and support the fight. Keep boxing alive out here.

“I called Hank and in typical Hank Lundy style, he said yes before I finished my sentence. This has been his MO from the beginning, he always says yes.

“He has had a lot of time to prepare for a fight, with two months, we will see the best hammering Hank we have ever seen. Hank has taken on all challenges, and he will take fights on short notice.

“With $10 tickets, that is a steal. You are going to get a great fight. Come out and support it. We are confident that Hank will be bringing the title back to Philly.”

MICHAEL PEREZ, Lightweight Contender:

“Me, as a fighter, I’m growing year by year. I’m young but I have a lot of experience to bring to this fight. I’m coming out to make a name.

“I am growing year by year. I am young but I think have a lot of experience to bring to this fight. I know the opportunity that is in hand.”

SHARIF BOGERE, Lightweight Contender:

“I want to thank you for being here. We are going to put on a great show, and I am ready. July 11, it’s going down baby. Don’t miss out.”

TONY WALKER, Director, HBO Sports:

“Thank you for coming out. It’s a great day in LA. This is an exciting match up that will be well received by our subscribers.

“We’re happy to work with GBP (Golden Boy Promotions) to bring this show to our HBO Latino channel. It deserves exposure, and the fighters deserve attention.”

ANASTASIA PALMER JOHNSON, Director of Booking, Business Development and Marketing, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena

“We’re excited to have this historic and exciting event on July 11 as what could be the last boxing match at the LA Sports Arena.”

BILL CAPLAN, Publicist for Golden Boy Promotions:

“Outside of Madison Square Garden and the Olympic Auditorium, I think the LA sports arena has the greatest history of a boxing arena in the US if not the world.

“The LA Sports Arena is scheduled to be torn down, this may be the last boxing show and possibly the last event at the arena ever. Closing with an important boxing show is as important as anything.

“You don’t want to miss this great show at the LA Sports Arena on July 11.”

MAURICIO HERRERA TO BATTLE HANK LUNDY FOR THE VACANT NABF SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE ON SATURDAY, JULY 11

LOS ANGELES (May 28) – Golden Boy Promotions in association with CES Boxing will present a summer showdown between West Coast vs. East Coast on Saturday, July 11 as Southern California’s Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) battles titlist “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs) of Philadelphia for the NABF Super Lightweight Championship. The 10-round super lightweight bout from the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles will be televised live on HBO Latino beginning at 11:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT).

In the co-main event and opening up the HBO Latino Boxing telecast is an exciting 10-round lightweight match-up between Michael “The Artist” Perez (22-1-2, 10 KOs) of Newark, New Jersey and Las Vegas transplant Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (27-1, 19 KOs).

“I am glad to be fighting in Southern California,” said Mauricio Herrera. “I feel it will make me stronger having all the support from my hometown, my family and my promoter. This fight will prove that I am a real threat in the division and Lundy is not going to have an easy fight with me. I am more comfortable in the ring and if Lundy wants a war well then bombs away. Let there be blood!”

“I’m eager to show the world that they haven’t seen the best of me yet,” said Hank Lundy. “Mauricio Herrera, I like him, because he reminds me of me, but on fight night I am not going to do him any favors. I know he gave Danny Garcia problems but I have full confidence in my abilities. He’s going to see what it’s like when you have a guy in front of you that can do the same thing and do it even better.”

“Herrera vs. Lundy at the LA Sports Arena will be thrilling fight for fans to witness on July 11,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Lundy is fearless, willing to fight anyone at anytime, and he will give Herrera a challenge in the ring. But, Herrera is bold and relentless with his pursuit of victory in the ring, having fought (and won) against a dangerous fighter like Ruslan Provodnikov. Both fighters are thirsty for the win on July 11 as former world champions looking to reclaim a title.”

“We’re very happy to be working with a great group of people and a first rate promotion like Golden Boy Promotions, as well as everyone at HBO Boxing,” said Jimmy Burchfield Sr., CES Boxing President. “We’d like to thank Mauricio Herrera and his camp for taking the fight. Lundy has absolutely no fear and no problem going into somebody’s backyard and giving them the fight of their life. This July, he is going to put on an amazing show and have a huge victory on HBO Latino, and let the world know that ‘Hammerin” Hank Lundy is ready to be a World Champion.”

Tickets are on sale now and are priced at $10, $25, $50 and $100, plus applicable taxes and service charges, and are available for purchase at www.lacoliseum.com, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations and by calling 800-745-3000.

Herrera vs. Lundy is a 10-round super lightweight bout for the vacant NABF title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with CES Boxing and sponsored by Corona Extra and Mexico, Live It To Believe It! Doors open at 4:00pm PT and the first bell rings at 4:10p.m. PT. The HBO Latino Boxing telecast begins at 11:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT).

Currently ranked as one of the top ten super lightweight fighters in the world by the WBA and the WBO, Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera has made a name for himself in boxing, taking on some of the toughest opponents and earning the interim WBA World Super Lightweight, the IBF North American Super Lightweight and the USNBC Super Lightweight and Welterweight titles along the way. 2014 was a busy year for Herrera as he faced off against undefeated unified super lightweight world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia on March 15 for the WBA and WBC Super Lightweight World Championship only to lose via a controversial majority decision that many critics thought Herrera had won. Later on July 12, Herrera earned the interim WBA Super Lightweight title when he dethroned Johan Perez via a majority decision. Fresh off a contested decision against Jose Benavidez on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas, Herrera lost the interim WBA World Super Lightweight title and is now determined to take the NABF title on July 11. Herrera’s professional resume includes impressive victories over former WBO Junior Welterweight World Champion Ruslan Provodnikov and former standout Mike Dallas.

Former NABO and NABF Lightweight titlist “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy of Philadelphia, is a relentless fighter eager to get back into the title game after coming off a split-decision loss to Thomas Dulorme on Dec. 6, 2014 for the NABF Super Lightweight Title and the vacant WBO NABO Super Lightweight Title. A professional since 2006, Lundy has had a successful career acquiring and defending the WBO NABO Lightweight and the NABF Lightweight titles. Ranked by the WBC as one of the top contenders in the super lightweight division, Lundy has also faced some of the toughest fighters in the sport, going up against John Molina, former world champion David Diaz, and Raymundo Beltran. During a stretch between 2010 and 2014, Lundy fought nine of 11 bouts on national television (8 on ESPN and 1 on ShoBox) against opponents with a combined record of 232-18-3. Now, reunited with top trainer, Charles Ramey, who coached him during his undefeated streak, Lundy is ready to reclaim his place as a titleholder and will give the equally eager Herrera a tough fight at the L.A. Memorial Sports Arena on July 11.

Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, Michael “The Artist” Perezis ready to make his debut on HBO Latino on July 11. 7-0-1 in his last eight bouts, the 25-year-old is coming off two successful defenses of his WBA Fedelatin Super Lightweight title in 2014, as he defeated Jorge Romero and Jared Robinson. Currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBA, Perez wants to made a statement in his first fight of 2015 when he defeated the seasoned and former world titlist Miguel Acosta via unanimous decision in January. Now, Perez is ready to prove that he is the running for a world title shot when he faces the equally matched Sharif Borege.

From Kampala, Uganda and now fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sharif “The Lion” Bogere is an exciting lightweight fighter ready for a second shot at a world title. An active fighter since 2008, He has defeated experienced fighters like, Illido Julio, Raymundo Beltran, Sergio Rivera, Fernando Garcias and most recently Joksan Hernandez. Bogere got his first opportunity at the WBA Lightweight World Champion title in 2013, but lost out to Richar Abril via unanimous decision. Now, undefeated in his last four bouts, three of which were won via knockout, Bogere knows that a win against Michael Perez can put him back on the path to world championship stardom.

Lundy going back to his roots to prepare for next bout

hank-lundy_harney
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 14th, 2015) – From shopping for rings to stepping inside of one, 2015 figures to be a prominent chapter in the story of Philadelphia’s “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy.

Six days after he walks down the aisle to tie the knot with his longtime fiancée, Valerie, Lundy will step back into the ring to face super lightweight contender Mauricio Herrera in the 10-round main event of Golden Boy Promotions’ July 11th show in Los Angeles live on HBO Latino.

As his life outside of the ring changes, Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs) hopes his current career path can take a similar turn for the better. Eight years into a career that has featured its share of ups and down, the 31-year-old Lundy is at crossroads coming off a narrow loss to Thomas Dulorme in his HBO debut in December.

Still ranked No. 9 in the World Boxing Council (WBC) among 140-pounders, Lundy knows a big win on national television puts him right back in the championship mix, a prime spot for a fighter who’s no stranger to the big stage.

“I’m eager to show the world they haven’t seen the best of me yet,” Lundy said.

On the surface, Lundy is the same brash, outspoken, take-on-all-comers boxer cut from the same cloth as almost every other fighter out of Philadelphia, but he’s matured in recent years. Before he and his fiancée decided to get married, they bought their first home together. Lundy admits he’s now a “homebody” who doesn’t get out much, instead focusing on family and fighting.

In addition to the not-so-subtle domestic changes, he’s gone back to his roots, reuniting with longtime trainer Charles Ramey, who guided Lundy through his amateur career and his first 16 fights as a professional before the two parted ways.

“I had to dig down deep and go back to where it all started,” Lundy said. “Most fighters, they like to go around and work with different trainers. When I had Charles, he brought out the best in me.

“He was hard on me, but he knows what I’m capable of and that’s what I like. He’s one hell of a boxing coach. I’m just ready to get in the ring and show the world the real ‘Hammerin’’ Hank.”

Asked why he and Ramey split up in the first place, Lundy admits success got to his head – the knockout wins, the accolades, the numberous appearances on ESPN.

“When you’re coming up in the boxing game and you get a little fame, everyone in is in your ear,” he said. “You get a little arrogant. I got big-headed. I’m not going to lie, Charles and I are both stubborn. Neither one of us wanted to come to the table and talk, so I put my little bundle on the stick and left.

“But I’ll say it like this: At the end of the day, the person who started you off knows what makes you tick. They know how hard to drive you, what buttons to push. Sometimes another coach might change things and you think it’s for the better, but they never learn you.”

With Ramey back in his corner, familiarity – or lack thereof – won’t be an issue when Lundy squares off with Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs), a tough, battle-tested veteran and former world champion in the lightweight division with wins over Ruslan Provodnikov and Johan Perez in addition to a 12-round battle with current WBC and World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight champ Danny Garcia on his resume. He’s also ranked No. 7 among 140-pounders in the WBA.

But don’t mistake Lundy’s mature, family-man exterior as a subsequent lack of hunger, or taming of the beast, so to speak.

“I’m still ‘Mr. Excitement,’” he says matter-of-factly. “I’m ‘Mr. ESPN.’ Every time ‘Hammerin’’ Hank is in the ring you know he’s going to put on a show, so there’s no pressure.

“Before you had Adrien Broner, it was ‘Hammerin’’ Hank,” he continued. “It was me first before you saw those guys. Ricky Hatton. It was me doing all of that.

“Mauricio Herrera, I like him, because he reminds me of me, ‘Hammerin’’ Hank, but on fight night it’s search and destroy. I’m going to have to show him once again y’all messed up fighting ‘Hammerin’’ Hank! I know he gave Danny Garcia problems, but y’all forgot ‘Hammerin’’ Hank can box his ass off. And not only that, I can punch.

“You’re going to see some great boxing skills. He’s going to see what it’s like when you have a guy in front of you that can do the same thing and do it even better.”

Lundy promises “fireworks” in July with Ramey back in his camp, and he typically delivers when the pressure’s on. The fight against Dulorme was all action from the opening bell, with Lundy picking himself up off the canvas following a first-round knockdown and eventually hurting Dulorme in the later rounds before losing a split decision. More importantly, it was a learning experience he hopes will serve as a reference point when he steps back into the HBO spotlight in July.

“In that fight, I felt I got away from my game plan,” Lundy said. “I wanted to show the world the real ‘Hammerin’’ Hank, but everybody knows I’m a boxer and a puncher. I won a lot of fans, but that wasn’t the real me. I’m back to the old ‘Hammerin’’ Hank.”

Benavidez goes back to work, hopes for a shot at Jessie Vargas

jose_benavidez_signing_100114_001
Phoenix junior welterweight Jose Benavidez Jr., who won the WBC’s interim junior-welterweight title in a controversial decision over Mauricio Herrera on Dec. 13, plans to resume training on Monday.

His trainer and father, Jose Benavidez Sr., said he hopes his son’s next fight is in the spring. However, Top Rank, his promoter, has yet to decide on an opponent or a date.

“We still have to meet and talk about that,’’ said his father, whose unbeaten son will train at Central Boxing near downtown Phoenix.

Unbeaten Jessie Vargas, the WBA’s 140-pound champion and also a Top Rank fighter, is at the top of Benavidez’ wish list.

“If everything works out, yes, Vargas is the guy we’d like to fight,’’ the senior Benavidez said.

A rematch was speculated after Benavidez (22-0, 15 KOs) won a controversial unanimous decision over Herrera at Las Vegas’ Cosmopolitan in an HBO-televised bout. In the immediate aftermath of the bout, a frustrated Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) said he wanted a rematch and Benavidez said he would give him one.

However, it sounds as if Herrera has changed his mind. Instead, he says he wants a shot at Adrien Broner, who faces John Molina Jr. on March 7 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on the first card in Al Haymon’s deal with NBC.

Herrera, 34, broke into The Ring’s 140-pound ratings at No. 10, despite the loss to the 22-year-old Benavidez, who is not ranked among the top 10.

Benavidez’ father said he had no problem with the ranking.

“Mauricio is good fighter, a good guy and a good story,’’ he said. “My son learned a lot in that fight. With that experience, I think, he’d knock him out in a rematch.’’

Benavidez is the third Arizona fighter in the state’s history to win a title sanctioned by a major sanction acronym. Junior-flyweight Michael Carbajal, a Hall of Famer, held the IBF, WBC and WBO titles during the 1990s. Louie Espinoza won the WBA’s super-bantamweight title in 1987.

Bradley, Chaves fight to a controversial draw

Bradley_Chaves_141213_004a
LAS VEGAS – A draw?

Timothy Bradley didn’t see it, not from a left eye that was nearly swollen shut and not from an undamaged right eye.

But the judges saw their own way, or three ways to be exact. Put their cards together and the result was a controversial draw with Diego Chaves in an HBO-televised bout at The Cosmopolitan.

“I thought I won the fight clearly,’’ said Bradley (31-2-1, 12 KOs), whose eye was left badly swollen from a couple of head butts in the second. “But the judges saw it different.’’

Only judge Burt Clements agreed with Bradley. He scored it 115-113 for the welterweight from Palm Springs, Calif. Craig Metcalfe had it 114-114. Meanwhile, Julie Lederman had it 116-112 for Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs).

The Lederman card angered Bradley promoter Bob Arum, who proceeded to rip the daughter of HBO’s Harold Lederman

Arum would have been okay with a two-point edge for Chaves. He would have argued with a 114-114 score. But, he said, reasonable people can disagree. Lederman’s card, he said was beyond reason.

“The disparity of some of these cards makes all of us look insane,’’ Arum said.

Arum argued that there was incompetency among the judges, because there weren’t enough good ones available because of a busy night when the Nevada Commission had to regulate two major cards, the Top Rank show at The Cosmopolitan and the rival one promoted by Golden Boy at the MGM Grand.

“It shouldn’t have been allowed,’’ said Arum, who also said the Nevada Commission does anything the MGM Grand asks it to.

Arum and the MGM Grand began feuding last April before Bradley lost to Manny Pacquiao. That was a rematch of Bradley’s hugely controversial decision over Pacquiao.

When asked to compare the scorecards from Bradley-Pacquiao I to Bradley -Chaves, Arum said:

“Just as bad.”

But, he also said, that it could be done again.

“Maybe there could be rematch,’’ he said.

But it’s safe to assume it would be without Julie Lederman at a ringside that would be just about anywhere but the MGM Grand.

Lee_Korobov_141213_001a
Before the Bradley-Chaves controversy, Matt Korobov’s own skillset got short-circuited by a sudden surge of power from Andy Lee.

Korobov (24-1, 13 KOs) appeared to be on his way ta o solid decision and the WBO’s vacant middleweight title. Going into the sixth round, the Russian led on all three scorecards. On two, he was pitching a shutout.

What could go wrong? Plenty. Aft a bout a minute in the sixth round had passed, Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) unloaded. First, a left. Then, a right. Boom, double-boom

Korobov hit the canvas and those scorecards landed at the bottom of a nearby trashcan. Referee Kenny Bayless ended it at 1:10 of the round.

“Tough to describe,’’ said Lee, an Irishman from Limerick who once had the late Emanuel Steward as his trainer. “When i thought about this moment, i had a speech in mind. I would like to say thank you to my manager who has done so much for me over the last couple of years.

“But it’s also for the man who made me, Emanuel Steward. We spent seven, eight years together and he said I would win a world title.

“His wife Marie came here today, flew all the way from Detroit.’’

Some of her late husband’s power must have flown with her. For Lee, it landed just in time.

BenavidezJr_Herrera_141213_001a
Jose Benavidez Jr. went a distance he had never traveled and to a place he had he had never been. It was trip he had envisioned while growing up in Phoenix. It was a kid’s dream.

But it’s not kid’s stuff anymore.

He’s grown up and the dream is reality.

Benavidez (22-0, 15 KOs) has a world title. It’s interim. But aren’t they all? More significant, the 22-year-old stamped himself as world class.

He did it in a stunner and amid controversy, upsetting Mauricio Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) for a version of the World Boxing Association’ junior-welterweight title Saturday night in an HBO-televised fight at The Cosmopolitan.

Benavidez’ victory was something of a surprise to everyone but him. He won a unanimous decision that was booed by many in the crowd and condemned by Herrera, who believed he had outworked a young fighter that Top Rank signed when he was a 17-year-old prodigy.

Judges Max De Luca and Eric Cheek both scored it 116-112. Dave Moretti had it 117-111. All for Benavidez.

“Everything I threw – jabs, uppercuts, body shots, — was landing,’’ Benavidez said after going 12 rounds for the first time in his career. “He was aggressive, but I was catching him with everything I threw as he came in at me.’’

Herrara, a Golden Boy Promotions fighter, took the attack to Benavidez from the beginning. In the opening round, Herrera rocked Benavidez with a combination.

But Benavidez, who had never gone beyond eight rounds before Saturday night, appeared to make some subtle adjustments. He was content to sit on the ropes throughout the first three rounds. But he began to circle into the center of the ring in the middle rounds. That’s where he was the most effective, especially with his long photogenic jab.

“I outworked him,’’ said a frustrated Herrera, who had a nasty bruise beneath his left eye. “I did all of the work.’’

Herrera threw more punches, 870 to Benavidez’ 647, according to the punch stats. He landed five more punches, 255-to-250. But Benavidez was more accurate, landing 39 percent to Herrera’s 33 percent.

“I want a rematch,’’ Herrera said. “Of course, I want a rematch.’’

Controversy over the scorecards might lead to one. But that too would be a professional first for Benavidez, a prospect no more.

On the undercard

Egidijus Kavaliauskas, an accomplished amateur in Lithuania now being trained by Robert Gracia in Oxnard, Calif., pushed his pro record as a junior-welterweight to 9-0 with his eighth knockout, a second round stoppage of Jaime Herrera (12-3, 7 KOs) of Frnaklin Park, Ill.

New York light-heavyweight Sean Monaghan, a former bricklayer, continued to build his record, victory-by-victory to an unbeaten 23-0 with is 15th knockout, a second-round KO of Hungarian Daniel Regi (20-12, 9 KOs).

It was a majority draw. It was mostly dull, too. Canadian welterweight Mikael Zewski (26-0-1, 20 KOs) stayed unbeaten, but not untied against Jeremy Bryan (17-4, 7 KOs) of Patterson, NJ.

Ramirez_Arellano_141213_001a
Junior-welterweight Jose Ramirez (13-0, 10 KOs), a 2012 Olympian, continued his promising apprenticeship, scoring a sixth-round TKO of Anthony Arellano (7-3-1, 3 KOs) of San Ysidro, Calif.

Shafikov_Mendoza_141213_001a
Russian lightweight Denis Shafikov (35-1-1, 18 KOs), now of Los Angeles, kept himself in position for a mandatory shot at the IBF tilte held by Mickey Bey with a unanimous decision over Miguel Angel Mendoza (21-5-2, 21 KOs) of Mexico.

TIM BRADLEY / DIEGO CHAVES MAURICIO HERRERA / JOSE BENAVIDEZ ANDY LEE / MATT KOROBOV / MIKAEL ZEWSKI LAS VEGAS MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Bradley_mediaDay_140403_003a
LAS VEGAS, NV (December 10, 2014) — World championship boxing returns to The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas this Saturday! Former two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY, JR. is back in the ring, facing one-time interim world champion DIEGO “La Joya” CHAVES, in a 12-round welterweight rumble. The co-main events will feature two world championship battles — World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super lightweight champion MAURICIO “El Maestro” HERRERA defends his title against undefeated Top-10 contender JOSE BENAVIDEZ, JR. and top-rated contenders MATT KOROBOV and ANDY LEE go mano a mano for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight crown. All three fights will be televised live, Saturday, December 13, on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The six main event fighters, plus undefeated welterweight sensation MIKAEL ZEWSKI and undefeated top-rated light heavyweight contender SEANIE MONAGHAN hosted Media Workouts today at the Top Rank Gym. Here are their quotes. Current bout sheet attached.

TIM BRADLEY
“Chaves in the ring changes so much. He has speed, steps in, gets out, can double up with his left hand. He has a complete arsenal.

“Will he get dirty? I think so particularly when we get close to each other. I have no problem with whatever he brings. I like to brawl and actually look forward to doing it.

“He’s a tough guy yes, but not as mean as Ruslan Provodnikov.

“I am only thinking winning. That’s all that is on my mind – use my skills, beat Chaves, anyway I can.”

DIEGO CHAVES
“Bradley is one of the three best fighters in the world – Pacquiao, Mayweather and Bradley. To beat Bradley it will take intelligence, movement and hard punches to the body which really bothers him. This fight will be a boxing match and not so rough as the one with Rios who is very dirty.”
“I was surprised and hurt when my fight with Rios was stopped. I really thought Rios was disappointed in the way he fought that night and that really caused all of that commotion. What happened to me that night was very unfair.”

MAURICIO HERRERA
“My experience will be a big advantage for this fight. He just has not fought at this level

“He is young and there is going to come a point in the fight where he will either step up or fold and that’s when we test his will

“The Danny Garcia fight changed my life. I finally have a promoter that is looking out for me and all I have to do is train and get ready to fight.”

JOSE BENAVIDEZ
“I heard Herrera was real mouthy today saying he would school me on Saturday night. Let’s see what he says when we get into the ring. I trained in Big Bear which is no joke because of the altitude. We train as if we are going into a 15 or 20-round fight, which means I am in top condition.”

ANDY LEE
“Korobov is a good boxer, technically sound, but the major difference is my experience in the ring. For the first time in Korobov’s career he is taking on a fighter he knows can beat him.

“Korobov is a fast starter and I plan to match him with that. My extra expierence and punching power will be the difference. He’s very much untested. I have faced far more adversity inside the ring

“I will win and thank my greatest trainer, Emanuel Steward, who I dearly miss.”

MATT KOROBOV
“I had over 300 amateur fights so I have more experience than Andy Lee has. In camp we brought in an Irish left hander and I had no problems with him. There’s danger in every fight but I don’t expect Andy to come out and rush towards me. He’s smarter than that. This is my time. Andy knows it too.”

SEANIE MONAGHAN
“As soon as the bell rings it will be my time to attack. I am going right over and blast him out. He’s good but I need this win more than he does. Look for a short fight.”

MIKAEL ZEWSKI
“This is a step-up fight for me, my final exam actually. My opponent is a strong solid fighter. I need to win and get right to the bigger fights. That’s the importance of this fight.”

JOSE BENAVIDEZ is seen SATURDAY, DEC. 13 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

HBO2 playdates: Dec. 14 (6:00 p.m.) and 16 (midnight)

Former junior welterweight and welterweight champ Timothy Bradley Jr. (31-1, 12 KOs) of Palm Springs, Cal. is one of the sport’s most recognizable fighters. Polished and resourceful. Following his first loss as a pro to superstar Manny Pacquiao last April, he’ll look to bounce back in this 12-round welterweight rumble.

Diego Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a power puncher who seeks to score a knockout in every fight. He was disqualified for excessive fouling in the ninth round of his last outing, a competitive ten-round bout with Brandon Rios in which one judge had him ahead.

Second on the bill, two gritty middleweights square off for a vacant 160-pound title belt, as Matt Korobov (24-0, 13 KOs) meets Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) in a 12-round contest. Both Korobov, a 2008 Russian Olympic team member, and the London-born Lee, a veteran of the 2004 Irish Olympic team, are pursuing their first world championship, which could lead to huge fights in the competitive division.

The opening bout is a super lightweight showdown pitting Mauricio Herrera of Riverside, Cal. (21-4, 7 KOs) against Jose Benavidez (21-0, 15 KOs) of Phoenix in a 12-round tilt. Herrera has fought some of the most dangerous opponents in the division, including titlists Mike Alvarado, Danny Garcia and Ruslan Provodnikov. Benavidez had a sensational amateur career, winning the Golden Gloves national championship at age 16. Since turning pro at 17, he’s undefeated in 21 bouts.

“Matt Korobov and Andy Lee will thrill fans in their battle for World Middleweight Championship at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Adding this bout to the already stacked December 13 show featuring Timothy Bradley vs. Diego Chaves and Jose Benavidez vs. Mauricio Herrera makes this an incredible triple header and a wonderful way to close out the year.” said Todd duBoef, president, Top Rank.

“Andy Lee is legitimately one of the best middleweights in the world and he will prove that when he defeats Matt Korobov,” said Lou DiBella. “Korobov-Lee is an evenly matched fight that is sure to bring fireworks. December 13 will be a great night for boxing fans.”

Korobov (24-0, 13 KOs), a 2008 Russian Olympian and stellar amateur, made his long-awaited HBO debut in his last fight which took place on June 28. In a battle of undefeated contenders, Korobov won a unanimous decision over Jose Uzcategui (22-0, 18 KOs), to capture the WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title. Uzcategui had stopped 10 of his 11 previous opponents before that. Now based in St, Petersburg, Fla., Korobov, a six-year veteran of the pro ranks, enters this fight having won three of his last five fights by knockout, including a sixth-round stoppage of Emil Gonzalez on April 16. Korobov is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBO.

Lee (33-2, 23 KOs), who at 6’2, is three inches taller than Korobov, was born in London but is Irish of heritage. Ireland’s sole boxing representative in the 2004 Olympics, Lee made his professional debut in 2006, winning a six-round decision over Anthony Cannon. Trained at the famed Kronk Gym in Detroit by the late Hall of Fame inductee Emanuel Steward, who referred to Lee as “my left-handed Tommy Hearns,” Lee possesses exceptional skills, speed and movement, complemented by good punching power and experience against good opposition. He enters this fight riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak with three of those victories coming inside the distance since unsuccessfully challenging previously-undefeated defending World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. in 2012. In his last fight, on June 7, Lee knocked out once-beaten John Jackson (18-1, 15 KOs) in the fifth round. Lee is world-rated No. 4 by the WBO.

THIS FRIDAY! Bradley vs. Chaves/Herrera vs. Benavidez Tix Go On Sale

Pacquiao_Bradley_weighin_140411_008a
LAS VEGAS, NV (October 20, 2014) — Former two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY JR. returns to the ring where he will battle one-time interim welterweight world champion DIEGO “La Joya” CHAVES in a 12-round welterweight rumble, Saturday, December 13, inside The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas (3708 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89109). The fight will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 10:00 p.m. EST/PST. The telecast will open with World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim Super Lightweight World Champion MAURICIO “El Maestro” HERRERA defending his title against undefeated contender JOSE BENAVIDEZ, JR.

These four gladiators boast a combined record of 96-7 (53 KOs) — a winning ratio of 93% with over half of those victories coming by way knockout.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Tecate, tickets to the Bradley-Chaves/Herrera-Benavidez world championship event go on sale Friday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. Priced at $40, $60, $100, $125 and $150, tickets will be available for purchase at www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/ or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 and www.ticketmaster.com/. Room/ticket packages will also be available.

“I’m excited to get back into the ring and showcase myself,” Bradley told ESPN.com. “Chaves is not that well known but the boxing fans know him. The boxing fans know that this guy can fight and that it won’t be a walk in the park for me. I think it’s going to be a great fight. I can’t wait.”

“I give Timothy Bradley all the credit in the world for coming back after his first loss to face me, especially after seeing how I hurt Brandon Rios in my last fight,” said Chaves. “We both have a lot to prove on December 13. If Bradley thought he had it rough against Ruslan Provodnikov, wait until he collides with me.”

“I’m so happy that this fight was made and I get to showcase my skills once again on a huge stage,” said Herrera. “I’m coming off of one of the most important wins of my career and I plan on using that momentum to defend my title and convincingly defeat Benavidez on December 13.”

I’m obviously excited and grateful for the opportunity to fight for the title. It’s something I’ve worked for since I was a kid,” said Benavidez. “I know I’ll be bringing the title back to Phoenix with me. I have heard Herrera is looking past me and talking about moving up in weight when he wins, and I’m sorry that I’ll be disrupting those plans on December 13th.”

“Tim Bradley’s return to the ring may be taking place at the end of the year but it’s the beginning of a new and exciting phase of the boxing career of one of the sport’s elite fighters, a man who has held a world title every year dating back to 2008,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Diego Chaves came so close when he faced Brandon Rios in his last fight and I anticipate seeing that same intensity and aggressiveness when he faces Tim. This will be a war. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will once again be hosting boxing at the highest level on December 13 and the world will be able to watch it on HBO.”

“So much hangs in the balance for both of these fighters – Herrera’s WBA Super Lightweight World Title, Benavidez’ undefeated record and much more,” said Golden Boy Founder and President Oscar De La Hoya. “With Herrera’s straight-ahead style against Benavidez’ Olympic pedigree, we have all the makings of a fantastic fight for fans.”

“There is no better way to present boxing fans with a pre-holiday gift than to feature the return of Timothy Bradley Jr. headlining an attractive card on World Championship Boxing, Live on HBO,” said Peter Nelson, Vice President of Programming, HBO Sports. “Bradley squares off against Diego Chaves, whose in-your-face style of fighting will keep Tim on his toes the entire night. And we anticipate fireworks from the rest of the telecast action.”

Bradley (31-1, 12 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif., a former two-division world champion who unified the junior welterweight titles twice during his previous four-year reign, returns to the ring after suffering his first professional loss, in his welterweight championship rematch against Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao last April. Before the Pacquiao rematch, Bradley posted three consecutive career-best victories. After moving up in weight and beating Pacquiao in 2012 to capture the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown, Bradley co-starred in the Fight of the Year on March16, 2013, winning a brutal 12-round decision over future world champion Ruslan Provodnikov though Bradley was suffering from a concussion throughout most of the fight. In his most recent fight, on October 12, 2013, Bradley gave a virtuoso performance in defeating three-division world champion and Mexican icon Juan Manuel Márquez proving that Bradley is indeed one of boxing’s elite pound for pound fighters.

Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs), from Buenos Aires, is a power puncher who stalks his opponent with only one goal — THE KNOCKOUT! His victory by knockout ratio of 83% proves it is usually “mission accomplished” for him. Chaves made his Las Vegas debut on August 2 when he fought former world champion Brandon Rios at The Cosmopolitan. The fight was all blood and guts as both warriors tore into each other in a foul-filled bout that ended in the ninth round with Chaves being disqualified by referee Vic Drakulich. At the time of the stoppage, Chaves was ahead by one point on one scorecard and down one point on the other two cards. Chaves captured the WBA interim welterweight title in 2012, knocking out defending champion Ismael El Massoudi in the second round. Chaves’ one-year title reign included a successful title defense against José Miranda, where he scored another second-round stoppage. He lost the title to Keith Thurman July 23, 2013. Chaves began 2014 with a third-round TKO of Juan Godoy on February 15. He is currently world-rated No. 7 by the WBA and No. 10 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Herrera (21-4, 7 KOs), from Riverside, Calif. and promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, will be making the first defense of his interim world title. He won the championship in his last fight, on July 12, dethroning Johan Perez via a majority decision in a fight that was as close as it was competitive. It was a victory made sweeter by the fact Herrera had lost his previous title shot, against undefeated unified super lightweight world champion Danny Garcia on March 15, via a controversial majority decision that many thought Herrera had won. Herrera’s professional resume includes impressive victories over former WBO Junior Welterweight World Champion Ruslan Provodnikov and former amateur standout Mike Dallas, who had a combined record of 34-1-1 when he faced them.

Benavidez (21-0, 15 KOs), from Phoenix, AZ, was a sensational amateur prospect, winning a Gold Medal at the 2009 National Golden Gloves Championships at the age of 16, the youngest fighter to ever win the National Golden Gloves Championships. He turned professional one year later, at age 17, where he became the youngest professional boxer to be licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He was granted an exception (the minimum age requirement was 18) because of his exceptional talent. After spending most of 2013 sidelined with a broken hand he has come back to win all three of his 2014 fights decisively, including a first-round TKO of Henry Auraad on July 26.

Herrera to defend Interim title against Benavidez on Bradley – Chaves card on December 13

jose_benavidez_signing_100114_001
Interim Super Lightweight titlist Mauricio Herrera will defend his belt against undefeated prospect Jose Benavidez on December 13 as part of the Timothy Bradley – Diego Chaves televised undercard in Las Vegas.

“He’s ready to fish or cut bait,” said Benavidez promoter Bob Arum. “You got to take a shot at some point. He wanted this fight. You win, you go on; you lose, you go back to the drawing board. But at a certain point, you have to take that plunge. This is a good fight, and if he wins, he’s ready to fight anybody in the division.”

“Benavidez appears to be physically and mentally ready for this,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti. “He knows he has a challenge in front of him. I don’t see at this point what two or three more fights would do to get him ready for a fight at this level, so we are taking the shot.”

Arum said he is working with HBO on a deal to turn the Dec. 13 card into a tripleheader by including Matt Korobov against Andy Lee for the middleweight world title Peter Quillin recently vacated.

According to Arum and Lee promoter Lou DiBella, both sides have agreed to take the fight but no deal can be finalized until HBO agrees to put the fight on and comes to an agreement on a license fee.

“Andy wants this opportunity,” DiBella said. “We like the fight. We think it’s a winnable fight and quality matchup. The numbers for the fight aren’t done but we’ve told them we will do the fight.”

Moretti said they were waiting for an answer from HBO, which has been mulling it over for about a week.

Korobov-Lee was initially ticketed to take place Dec. 13 in Ireland on a Frank Warren-promoted card, but Arum said those plans fell through.

“I think it’s a terrific fight and I can’t wait to see it. That’s how I judge a fight,” Arum said. “Who the hell knows who will win the fight? HBO is interested, and I hope we will get it done.”

“Even though it’s two lefties, their styles should make for a very entertaining fight in the ring,” Moretti said. “Andy Lee has a little bit more experience and has shown the ability to come back from adversity like he did with one punch against Jackson. And this is the opportunity that Korobov has been training his whole life for, a shot at a world title.”

Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us today on the call. We do have a super undercard to talk about, the undercard for Canelo vs. Lara PPV on Saturday, July 12th. And we have four of the fighters on that card joining us today, along with Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.

Before I get to that just a quick program note that I just got, Showtime’s All Access Canelo vs. Lara, the first segment will be Friday, June 27th at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time and Pacific Time. So just please make note of that. And for this call today we are going to start with the opening Pay-Per-View bout, which is between Johan Perez and Mauricio Herrera.

I’m going to turn it over to Oscar to make the introduction, and then when we’re done with the questions for Perez and Herrera we will then move on to Juan Manuel Lopez and Francisco Vargas. So, Oscar, please.

Oscar De La Hoya
Thank you very much, Kelly. Yes, we are getting closer to the major, major pay-per-view July 12th. And the fighters on the call today are exceptional fighters who I’m really thrilled to be announcing, obviously the main event, you know, Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara, which will be a 12-round junior middleweight bout, we have the coming event with the Abner Mares and Jonathan Oquendo from Puerto Rico. Also Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Francisco Vargas, another Puerto Rico- Mexico duel there, which will be really, really exciting. And the opener, which I’m thrilled to be announcing, Johan Perez vs. Mauricio Herrera, that will be a 12-rounder for the WBA Junior Welterweight title.

This event is taking place at MGM Grand, and it is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions. And I want to thank the sponsors, Corona and AT&T, thank you for all your activations and all the hard work that you do there. It’s distributed by SHOWTIME PPV, and tickets are on sale. They’re going really fast, obviously an indication of how great this whole card is. Tickets are still available but are going extremely fast.

And I’m really happy to announce, once again, a boxing event being shown across the country in movie theaters. If you haven’t experienced that experience of watching fights on a huge screen amongst friends and other fans and family, it really is quite an experience. And you can go to Fathom Events.com, which you can check your local listings on what movie screens you can watch that event live.

Let me introduce to you right now a fighter who I’m really, really fond of. He hails out of Riverside, California. He’s one of those fighters that he has that Rocky story once again, kind of like his neighbor, Josesito Lopez, he’s a hard worker, we witnessed him against Danny Garcia, which a lot of people, and I think most of the people thought that he won out in Puerto Rico. He’s a tremendous puncher, a great boxer. He is eager to get back in the ring. Obviously, July 12th he’ll be up against another superior boxer puncher in Johan Perez.

But let me introduce to you “El Maestro,” Mauricio “Maestro” Herrera, with a record of 20-4 and 7 KOs, out of Riverside, California. Mauricio, say a few words.

Mauricio Herrera
Hello. I want to say thank you, Oscar. And I want to say thank you to all Golden Boy Promotions, and thank you for giving me all these opportunities having come my way. We are getting ready July 12th. I am, like you said, eager to get back in the ring and I’ve still got unfinished business, I’ve still got to show a lot, and show the fans that I am for real. So I want to thank everybody.

O. De La Hoya
Gracias, Herrera. Also on the call I want to introduce to you, out of Caracas, Venezuela, he returns at 140-pound division, bouncing back from that very tough, difficult fight against Pablo Cesar Cano in 2012. He has a string of wins, including winning the WBA Junior Welterweight title in 2003 against Paul Spadafora, the undefeated Paul Spadafora at the time, also, going up against Kamegai, who is fighting this Saturday, beating Kamegai in a thrilling, exciting fashion.

Johan Perez
Good morning everybody. Thank you for having me here. I’m very happy. I’m already here in the States, looking forward to giving a spectacular performance against Mauricio Herrera and to come out victorious come July 12th.

Q
Mauricio, my first question is for you. You’re not known particularly as a knockout puncher; still, do you feel that you need a knockout in order to get the fights that you feel you deserve? It’s hard sometimes to get the big fights, so do you feel that you need a knockout in this fight in order to get a fight that you deserve?

M. Herrera
I think so. We’ve been thinking about it a lot, and we’re looking for a stoppage, we want to maybe stop Johan if it’s possible. We are going to look to make an exciting fight. I know I can box all day, but I think in this fight I might switch it up at times and I may try to look for a stoppage of some kind. I’m not a real power hitter, but that doesn’t mean I can’t stop a fighter. Anything can happen in there. And, yes, I’m looking, if it’s not a stoppage or knockout, at making it an exciting fight.

Q
That’s good. I heard you talking about stoppage, but what has been involved mentally in totally focusing on Herrera and in putting behind the frustrations of what would have undoubtedly been your greatest career victory had you gotten a victory over Danny Garcia, which surpassed really even the victory over Provodnikov. It would have surpassed that.

M. Herrera
Yes, I’m not totally over it, with Danny Garcia. It was frustrating for a while. But I still think about that fight. It is still frustrating in my head. But I wasn’t surprised at the decision, either. Nobody ever expected me to do that well, so I have the mentality that I just have to keep going, keep going forward and keep proving myself. I think every fight I’ve always had to prove myself. It’s no different today. So, I have a strong mind and a strong character. As you see in my fights, I can take a good punch. I hold all that in, and I think with Johan Perez I think I might just, who knows, let it all out in that fight.

Q
In terms of saying you want to stop Perez, is that possibly kind of a layover from the way you feel about the way the Garcia fight went?

M. Herrera
Yes, I think so. I want to put on exciting fights all the time for the people. I’m never in a boring fight. I am a boxer. I’m not a very, they say a hard puncher, so I sort of follow what my style is. But I know what I can do, and when I’m in great shape I know I can do better things and get that stoppage. So, I’m going to try really hard and give the fans what they want.

Q
My last question for you would be, in terms of the stoppage, the caller before me referenced Perez’s height. How critical is a body attack going to be in a fight like this?

M. Herrera
That’s going to be very important. Being that the people say I don’t hit hard, he’ll find out in there how I punch. But it doesn’t take that hard of a punch when you go to the body. Anybody can go down from a punch. It doesn’t have to be that hard. But a body attack is something we’re working on also. But we can shoot and fire punches and get stoppage as well, so I’m working on a lot of things like that. I think I do very well with tall fighters, and you’re going to see it that night.

Q
Oscar, can you talk about Mauricio’s style a little bit? It’s obviously a throwback style, and I think more in the past that style was appreciated. It may not be as appreciated today. Can you just talk about what he does well, his overall ability?

O. De La Hoya
Well, he does everything well. He can upset you. He can fight you. He can box you. But mentally he’s going to beat you, no matter what it takes. And he’s obviously proved it with Provodnikov, beating him, he’s proved it with Danny Garcia, it was a fight where a lot of people had Herrera winning. So, he’s on a mission, and his style is suited for any fight he’s in, whether he wants to box, whether he wants to brawl, whether he wants to do whatever he wants to do inside that ring. He’s in great shape and I think the fact that he’s on a mission, it just calls for an exciting fighter and an exciting fight come July 12th.

Q
, I’ve just got the one question for you. I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about your preparation in training camp and what you’re really working on and focusing on for the upcoming fight.

M. Herrera
Well, we have a couple more weeks of time for this fight. We have enough time to train. What we basically do is we just refine everything, get the jabs faster and stronger, work on the defense more. Of course we’re always working on power, and it’s just being in shape. If I get in top shape I feel I can do anything, and that’s the main part. When I feel good, my body’s strong. I think you can see a little more power from me, and that’s what we’re expecting that night, we’re expecting to be fast, strong, and I want to be right there in the space all night.

Q
Johan, how training is going and what are you really focusing on?

J. Perez
Well, training’s been really good, sparring’s been good. The pads, everything’s been going perfect. I’m working a lot on the jab, defense. My opponent, Mauricio, throws a lot of punches, we’re aware of that, so we’re working on using a lot of jab and countering.

Q
Okay, sounds great. Listen, I just had a question for Johan. Johan, really quick, your height advantage, how do you intend to use it? How do you intend to employ it during the bout? Are you going to use it to jab, or are you going to use it to keep your distance and possibly try to knock Herrera out Tommy Hearns style? What are you planning to do with, wow, what is it, I’d say five good inches of height?

J. Perez
I’m a fighter that works round per round to see what he brings. We’re going to see what he brings. I can work all three distances, in short, mid, and outside. We’re going to see what he brings. But I will tell you this, I’m prepared to win and take the victory home.

Q
Mauricio, normally you are the underdog, you’re always on the B side, but after the performance you had with Danny Garcia it doesn’t seem to be in this case. It seems like you are the fan favorite, and the favorite for the fight. But does that add additional pressure to have you go out and look for the knockout so that you can come out victorious with this fight versus Johan?
M. Herrera
Yes. There’s no pressure, like I said, even with everybody expecting a lot of the Danny Garcia fight. But I’m ready. I’m always ready to give a great fight. I’ve got to fight a smart fight. But I know what the people want to see, and that’s what I’m going to try to give them. But I have to be smart in there. It’s an important fight and I don’t want to give it away, but I do have to take some risks and give a good action fight.

Q
Did you see the fight with Mauricio and Danny? Did it surprise you on his performance? And will Mauricio, is he the fighter that’s going to put you to that next level so that people know who Johan Perez really is?

J. Perez
Well, yes, it surprised me a little bit. I saw Mauricio winning the fight. I think Danny got the decision because obviously he was the local in Puerto Rico. And a victory over him, of course it’s very important because that will show the world who Johan is, and that’s what we’re working for. Most importantly, right now let’s give the fans what they want, a great fight, may the best man win, and I’m looking forward to it.

Q
What did you learn from your fight with Pablo Cesar Cano, your only loss, in Cancun, Mexico? And how will you use that against Mauricio Herrera, who’s an aggressive fighter and he’s coming with a lot of hunger for victory?

J. Perez
I learned a lot. It gave me some experience. Obviously, it ended with an accidentally, the head butt, the injury, but I thought I was clearly going to win the fight. But it gave me experience, and you’ll see that coming up. With Mauricio I know I’m facing a fighter that’s very hungry for victory, but I’m very hungry for glory. I want to become the best 140-pounder in boxing, and that’s what we’re working on, to come out a victory.

O. De La Hoya
Thank you very much. Thank you to all the press for your patience, and thank you for being on the call. The next bout that I’m really excited about to introducing at this moment will be a fight that pits Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, you know, those rivalries are just exciting rivalries that both fighters will be giving it their all. It’s a high stakes match, and we’re really excited to be presenting this fight to you.

He’s made his mark at 130-pounds. He’s coming off some great wins versus Jerry Belmontes and Abner Cotto. He’s ranked No. 2 in the world by the WBO, and obviously facing his toughest fight to date. Let me introduce to you, Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas?

Francisco Vargas
Thank you, Oscar. Thank you very much. I’m here in training camp in Mexico City, very, very focused, and very motivated for the fight. And we’re getting ready.

O. De La Hoya
Thank you. Gracias. And now also I would like to introduce to you the fighting pride of Puerto Rico. He’s undergoing a career reassurgence, with three wins in the last four bouts. He is a fighter who is very exciting, stopping on March 15 Daniel Ponce De Leon in the second round. He’s obviously very confident about a victory come July 12th.

Juan Manuel Lopez
Good afternoon everybody. We’re very happy and motivated to be on this great card, and working really hard to take the victory back to Puerto Rico.

Q
How are you focusing, how are you preparing for this fight for JuanMa? You’re fighting an undefeated fighter. You have a lot more experience.

J. Lopez
I’m very motivated to put on a great performance, a great fight, and obviously looking forward to winning the World Title again, to being a three-time champion. And obviously winning this fight will put me there, so that’s where the focus is.

Q
The same question to Francisco, how are you focused and how are you looking forward to fighting a fighter with so much experience.

F. Vargas
I’m working very hard here in Mexico City in the altitude. I’m very motivated. I know he has tremendous experience and I know that he’s a great fighter. But that’s what we’re working on. We’re working with the sparring partners, working very hard, because I know a victory here will get me ready for the World Title, and that’s what we want.

Q
Obviously you say a victory here will put you in the world title spot, fight for the title. Puerto Rico just recently had Miguel Cotto as a champion, do you want to follow those steps and become champion again?

J. Lopez
Yes, obviously my goal is to become world champion again. I’m very proud of what Miguel has done, gave Puerto Rico a title. And I’m looking forward to doing the same. But for me to do that I have to beat Francisco Vargas, and that’s where my goal is right now, that’s where my focus is, on Francisco Vargas and to beating him.

Q
Francisco, obviously there’s a rivalry between fighters from Mexico and fighters from Puerto Rico. How do you take this?

F. Vargas
Yes. No, definitely, and that gives me an additional motivation. It makes for som great fights in history, Mexico against Puerto Rico, and that gives me that extra motivation. And I know this won’t be an exception. I’m coming with everything, he’s coming with everything, and I’ll tell you what, the fans are the ones that are going to come out very happy.

Q
What does it feel like, what does it mean to be fighting on a big card where Canelo Alvarez is the main event? JuanMa?

J. Lopez
No, it’s obviously a great opportunity. Not everyone gets it, to be on a pay-per-view card of this magnitude. And I’m just very fortunate, I’m very motivated, and I’m grateful.

F. Vargas
Yes, it’s very motivating to be on a card of this magnitude, where millions of people are going to be watching all over the world. And that gives you that extra, because we know they’re going to be watching us, and want to perform.

Q
First, Francisco, how do you see this fight going? It seems as though your strengths are to box, as I don’t think you want to go toe-to-toe.

F. Vargas
I’m working for 12 rounds, working really hard. I know how dangerous he is, and I’m working for the 12 rounds. I’m working for the distance. But we’re going to see what he brings, and we’ll take it round by round.

Q
And a question for JuanMa. I’m trying to get a sense of the supreme satisfaction you must have felt after his last victory over Daniel Ponce De Leon, because at that point it seemed as though virtually everyone was counting you out. We did a poll where only two of 20 voters thought that you had a shot to win. So, I wanted to get a sense from you how great you felt after proving so many people wrong.

J. Lopez
I felt very good. I felt very happy. Unfortunately, boxing is that way, you’re only as good as your last fight, and I was coming off a loss to Mikey Garcia, so a lot of people didn’t give me the opportunity. But I didn’t listen to them. I didn’t listen to any of them. I only listened to my team. And we knew what we had to do, and obviously we came out with a spectacular victory. And that’s what we look forward to doing this coming fight too.

Q
And my last question for him is piggybacking what I just asked him. How rejuvenated is he in the fact that he won convincingly after being on the canvas? And what are his hopes of winning another title?

J. Lopez
Well, obviously the victory did a lot for me in motivating me extra, it gave me that extra push that I needed to show everyone, me personally, that the hard work, yes, he dropped me, I was off balance a little bit, he dropped me, but I got up and I showed my power’s still there and got the victory. And as far as winning another title, yes, of course, that is the goal. And that’s what we’re working on, but obviously first is Francisco Vargas.

Q
The question for JuanMa is, you’re going to be fighting Francisco Vargas, who’s ranked No. 2 in the WBO, and No. 1 is Salido, do you think a victory over Vargas can put you in line to fight for a third time against Salido for the World Title?

J. Lopez
Well, obviously a champion at 130 pounds right now is Mikey Garcia, I don’t know what he’s going to do. It all depends on that. But I’d welcome a third fight with Salido. Salido, I feel I was dominating, I was winning, we had a little problem there, and he got it. But I’m now with a new team, we’re focused, we’re working hard, and, yes, I’d welcome it.

Q
The question is for JuanMa. In boxing terms we say that a lot of the fights are won obviously in the gym, but a lot as well psychologically, and how are you right now mentally, psychologically feeling after the win over Ponce De Leon?

J. Lopez
I’m very confident. This fight, as I said, I mentioned the way it ended, the way I won gave me that extra push in my career, in my life. And I’m very focused and I feel very confident and very hungry to win the World Title once again.

Q
Vargas, How are you preparing to fight a fighter as strong and good as Juan Manuel Lopez? What are you doing?

F. Vargas
I’m preparing myself real strong mentally, physically. I’m working really hard. And we’re getting ready so we can win on the 12th.

Q
JuanMa, you’ve told us what you’ve done and how you felt in the win over Ponce De Leon, but what is it that you did to make that turnaround? You were looking almost at retirement and now all of a sudden there’s a possibility of another world title fight.

J. Lopez
Well, obviously we made a total change. We have a brand new team, and concentrating a lot on conditioning. But most importantly, I’ve matured. I know what I want, I’m working very hard, I’m focused, working hard for my family, for my wife and kids.

Q
The question is for Francisco, obviously going back to JuanMa’s fight with Ponce, do you think it was just a flash that we saw, or if there’s really that power in his hand and that could put you in a lot of danger come July 12th?

F. Vargas
We know JuanMa’s a very strong fighter, he got Ponce and knocked him out. But that doesn’t worry me at all. I’m working really hard. I’m working on my defense. I know what I have to do. This is a different fight, and I know what I’ve got to do so I can come out victorious come the 12th.

Q
The question’s for Francisco, do you see it very close, do you smell it coming up that obviously winning on the 12th you can add your name to the list of the former Olympians that went on to become World Champions and give Mexico another world title?

F. Vargas
Yes, definitely. We’re very happy how things have been working out, how my career’s going. We’ve been working very hard. And obviously we know what the significance of a victory would be here, and then fighting for a World Title to add my name to that list of former Mexican Olympians that went on to win the World Title.

Q
Yes, I just have a question for Oscar. Oscar, do you have any input with your brother, Joel, who manages Francisco? I was just curious when this fight was presented what his thoughts were on Francisco fighting JuanMa, and what your thoughts were on your brother bringing a fight like this to the table?

O. De La Hoya
Well, it was very interesting, because Francisco Vargas is a fighter who has the amateur experience, he’s been stepping up in competition, he’s moving in the right direction, and obviously this is the fight of his career. JuanMa is a fighter who is serious about getting back on track to win that World Title, and it was a fight that he jumped on right away, because, first, the fact that it would be an exciting fight for the fans. And second, because the tradition and the rivalry that has been inside the ring, you know, Mexico, Puerto Rico, makes it that much more compelling. So, he understood the fact that all of Puerto Rico will be watching because of JuanMa, and he understood the fact that all of Mexico will be behind Francisco Vargas. And so it was easy to convince him.

Q
Juan, I have a question for you. Given your name value it seems like any time you want a title shot at this stage of your career you could just pick your opponent and get it. Why would you go after an undefeated fighter like Francisco Vargas?

F. Vargas
No, it’s not as easy as that. Obviously, the organizations require a process. The process is being done. I leave it in the hands of my team. They bring me a fighter, they bring me an opponent, it’s a great opportunity, I take it. I don’t choose my opponents. I leave that to my promoter, my manager. This is a great opportunity and we’re going to take it.

Q
Okay. And I have a question, Robert Diaz, maybe you can answer it, or Oscar. Is this fight actually a sanctioned eliminator, or is it on just the regional titles that are at stake?

Robert Diaz
They’re both putting their titles, they both have titles that are on the stake, and obviously because of the high ranking they will become a big player to fight for the World Title. Obviously, the winner of this fight deserves it. It’s not sanctioned as a title eliminator, no.

O. De La Hoya
I think that’s all, everyone. Thank you. Thank you very much to everybody. We greatly appreciate it. We’ll see you at the Kamegai-Guerrero fight this weekend. If not, then we’re looking forward to all the other calls and activities we have in store for July 12th. Thank you.

FULL SHOWTIME PPV® UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED FOR JULY 12 “HONOR & GLORY: CANELO ALVAREZ VS. ERISLANDY LARA” EVENT

Canelo Alvarez
LAS VEGAS (May 27, 2014) – The hottest fight of the summer of 2014 deserves a sizzling undercard, and Golden Boy Promotions and SHOWTIME PPV are pleased to announce the three bouts that will support the main event featuring Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara on Saturday, July 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In the co-main event, former three-division world champion Abner Mares returns to face Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo in a 10-round featherweight bout. In the SHOWTIME PPV opening bout, Johan Perez defends his interim WBA Junior Welterweight World Championship against Mauricio Herrera in s 12-round match up.

Rounding out the four-fight pay-per-view event, Puerto Rican star and former world champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez battles Mexico’s Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas in a 10-round bout for the WBO International Super Featherweight Title.

“The Canelo vs. Lara card is shaping up to be an extraordinary one for fight fans around the world,” said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “When you get a Mexican fighter like Francisco Vargas and a Puerto Rican fighter like JuanMa Lopez together-the greatest nationalistic rivalry in all of boxing-there will be fireworks. Then you have Johan Perez and Mauricio Herrera, two skilled hungry fighters who know their way around the sweet science, making this a dream fight. And, lastly, we have the highly anticipated return of Abner Mares against hard-hitting Jonathan Oquendo. So get ready for another memorable night at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.”

“I’m in great shape, I have momentum on my side after beating Daniel Ponce De Leon, and I’m ready for Francisco Vargas,” said Lopez. “The MGM Grand was where I had one of my biggest wins against Rafael Marquez, and I’m looking forward to more success there on July 12.”

“JuanMa Lopez is a great fighter and 2 time world champion, and we’re going to give the fans a fight to remember,” said Vargas. “I feel like this is my time, and with a win over JuanMa, it will get me that much closer to a world title shot.”

“It’s been a long time, but I can’t wait to step into the ring and hear my name called again,” said Mares. “Jonathan Oquendo is a respectable fighter and I know he’s coming to win, but he is in the way of another world title, so I have to get him out of there.”

“Puerto Rico vs. Mexico always produces great fights, and this fight won’t be any different,” said Oquendo. “A win over Mares will do big things for my career, and I plan on leaving Vegas with the victory.”

“Every fighter dreams of fighting in Las Vegas, and on July 12, I get my chance,” said Perez. “Mauricio Herrera is a great test and tough Challenger to my title. I feel Herrera beat Garcia and because of that he is the best and I want to fight the best. We’re going to give the fans a great battle.”

“You have to respect Johan Perez for all he’s accomplished in such a short time, and I see him as a very dangerous fighter,” said Herrera. “But my only goal is to win the title, and to get there, I have to beat him on July 12.”

Beloved Puerto Rican power puncher Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez (34-3, 31 KOs) is undergoing a career resurgence at 30-years-old. With wins in three of his last four bouts, all by knockout, he is soaring in the 130-pound rankings. In his most recent match on March 15, Caguas’ Lopez stopped Daniel Ponce De Leon in the second round of their rematch. Considering that his last Las Vegas bout was a stirring eighth-round stoppage of Rafael Marquez in 2010, Lopez is confident of victory on July 12.

A member of the 2008 Mexican Olympic team, 29-year-old Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (19-0-1, 13 KOs) has made his way to the top of the 130-pound division. After a trio of important victories over Brandon Bennett, Jerry Belmontes and Abner Cotto, the Mexico City standout is ranked No. 2 in the WBO and ready for his shot at a world title. But first he has to handle this step up in class and defeat former world champion Juan Manuel Lopez.

A member of the 2004 Mexican Olympic team, 28-year-old Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and fighting out of Downey, Calif., earned a spot on boxing’s pound-for-pound list in 2013 when he stopped Ponce De Leon in nine rounds to win his third divisional world title, the WBC Featherweight crown. In his last start on Aug. 24, on SHOWTIME, Mares was upset by Jhonny Gonzalez. But Mares, the previous owner of world championships at bantamweight and super bantamweight is anxious to return to the ring to begin his quest for another world championship.

One of Puerto Rico’s top contenders for world title honors, Jonathan “Polvo’ Oquendo (24-3, 16 KOs) is a hard-hitting pro who has won 10 of his last 12 bouts, seven by knockout. A victor over Jose Luis Araiza, Eden Sonsona, and Alejandro Montiel, the 30-year-old native of Bayamon is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision win over top prospect Guillermo Avila, setting the stage for his showdown with Mares.

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, 30-year-old Johan “El Terrible” Perez (19-1-1, 13 KOs) has returned to the top of the 140-pound division, bouncing back from the lone loss of his career against Pablo Cesar Cano in 2012 to win four straight bouts. In November of 2013, Perez regained the interim WBA World Junior Welterweight title by handing former champion Paul Spadafora his first career defeat. Perez has since successfully defended the crown once, stopping Fernando Monte de Oca in 10 rounds last May 10.

Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs), of Riverside, Calif., has long been a favorite of hardcore boxing fans for his gritty determination and well-balanced attack in the ring. But this past March, the world got to witness just how talented the 33-year-old is, as he pushed junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia to the brink before losing a razor-thin majority decision. Eager to get back on top, Herrera gets his chance to do just that on July 12.

“Honor & Glory: Canelo vs. Lara,” a 12-round junior middleweight fight taking place Saturday, July 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona and AT&T. In the co-main event Abner Mares returns to face Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo in a 10-round featherweight bout. In the SHOWTIME PPV opening bout, Johan Perez defends his interim WBA World Junior Welterweight Title against Mauricio Herrera in a 12-round match up. Also featured, Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez meets Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas of Mexico in a 10-round bout for the WBO International Super Featherweight Title.

Tickets are still available at the $750, $500, $250, $150 and $75 price ranges, not including applicable service charges. Tickets are limited to eighteen (18) per person with a limit of eight (8) at the $75 price ranges. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Video: Garcia – Herrera recap

KARIM MAYFIELD TALKS TRAININGCAMP, FIGHTING ON HBO, GARCIA vs. HERRERA OUTCOME

mayfieldweighsf206
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 17, 2014) – Top Rank’s undefeated Super Lightweight contender, Karim “Hard Hitta” Mayfield (18-0-1, 11 KOs), talks about his training camp with Virgil Hunter, his upcoming bout against Puerto Rico’s rising star Thomas Dulorme (20-1, 18 KOs), fighting on HBO for the second time in his career and the Garcia vs. Herrera outcome.

Mayfield vs. Dulorme, 10-round bout for the NABF Super Lightweight title, will take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey Saturday, March 29 on the undercard of Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KOs) vs. Cedric Agnew (26-0, 13 KOs). Both fights will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Mayfield on training with Virgil Hunter…
“Virgil and I have been working together since I was in the amateurs. He knows how to push me to bring out the best in my fighting style. Ben Bautista is also helping out. Virgil has some of the best fighters in the world working out at his gym so I’m getting the best sparring possible. Virgil has got me working on some new punches that I’ll display against Dulorme. Together I have a great corner guiding me to the top. Training camp is going great.”

Mayfield on his fight against top rated contender Thomas Dulorme…
“Dulorme is a technical guy with a long jab who has some fast hands. He’s nothing special though. I’ve seen him get knocked out before so I know his chin is suspect. I’ve fought guys who are long and rangy just like him so I’m confident in my ability to land some powerful shots. If I touch that chin of his, there’s no doubt, he’s getting knocked out.”

Mayfield comments on the Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera outcome…
“I thought Herrera pulled off the victory against Garcia because he landed more punches and was the aggressor for most of the fight. The fact that I dominated Herrera and he got the world title opportunity means there’s something wrong. I’ve been calling Danny Garcia out for the last couple of years but he’s been running from me because I put it on him when he brought me in camp. I’ll beat the breaks off Garcia if we ever fight. First I have to take care of Dulorme and that is where my 100% focus is right now.”

Mayfield comments on fighting on HBO for the second time…
“I’m very excited to be fighting on HBO again. This is a big opportunity to prove I’m one of the top fighters in the division. This is the type of fight the fans are seeking, two guys at the top of their game who are hungry to prove their great. I want to thank my promoter Bob Arum, Top Rank and HBO for giving another shot to showcase my talent on a global network.”

DANNY GARCIA DEFEATS MAURICIO HERRERA, REMAINS UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION

Danny Garcia
Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) defeated Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) via a majority decision to remain undefeated on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®.

Garcia established himself in the first round, landing the bigger punches against Herrera. But it was quickly clear that the challenger wasn’t going to let Garcia off easy, peppering the champion with strong shots to his body and head. By the end of round four, Garcia’s corner, specifically his father and trainer, Angel Garcia, could be heard telling the champion urgently to step-up his game and take control. Herrera, of Riverside, Calif., pressed on and proved himself as a worthy opponent with both fighters exchanging vicious shots throughout the extremely close match.

With the raucous crowd partial to the defending champion, whose father was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Garcia seemed to be carried by the cheers in what turned out to be the toughest fight of his career. At the end of the fight, SHO STATS reported that Garcia had landed 150 power punches compared to Herrera’s 82. Herrera landed more overall punches with 221 to Garcia’s 204. The final scores were 114-114, 116-112 and, 116-112.

After the fight, Garcia spoke with SHOWTIME Sports® ringside reporter Jim Gray, saying, “He is a crafty veteran and I know every time I step in the ring, every fighter wants what I have. So I expect them to bring everything. I had to make adjustments and I had to push the fight. He is a good fighter but I am a true champion. I had to make adjustments and pull it out. I needed to find my comfort zone but once I adjusted and got him on the ropes I knew I was doing good. I had to keep my composure and use my power shots. He came to fight and he did and it was a great fight.”

When asked if he felt he did enough to win the close decision, Garcia said, “I wanted to knock him out in front of my fans but he was tough. I know nothing is going to be easy from this point on for the rest of my career. I thought I won the fight. The Puerto Rican fans here support me. I love them.”

Regarding a potential move up in weight, Garcia told Gray, “I think making 140 pounds might have affected my performance a little bit. I need to sit with my camp and see if I should go up to 147 and start a new journey. It’s been getting a little hard so maybe I need to think about moving up.”

After the fight, Herrera told media that he felt he won. “I thought I was fine-tuned,” he said. “I came perfectly prepared for this fight. I was trying to push the fight. I came to box but he wasn’t making a fight so I am the one that had to make the fight. I was the one putting the pressure on to make the fight. I feel like I won the fight. I thought I finished strong at the end too. I thought I won the fight.”

Heavyweight Deontay Wilder made it 31 for 31 in the knockout department has he stopped Malik Scott in a scheduled 12 round bout.

Wilder landed a left to the temple that was followed up by a right hand that sent Scott to the canvas. Scott tried to get up but stumbled at the count of ten of the fight was over at 1:36 of round one.

Wilder, 227 lbs of Tuscaloosa, AL is 31-0 with 31 knockouts. Scott, 238 lbs of Van Nuys, CA is 36-2-1.

After the fight, Wilder spoke with Grayabout his performance. “I’ve got power. I’ve got natural power. This is something that you can’t buy. This is something that you can’t enhance and put in your body. This is all natural pure Alabama power. The left hand was right to the temple, to the head, and that is a soft spot. My power is crazy. I go through the gloves. Even though he had his gloves, there is nothing stopping that. Even though it went through his glove it still hurts.”

When asked if he is ready to take a step up and fight for a heavyweight title despite having not faced the top fighters in the division, Wilder responded, “All the testing is done in the gym. I bust my butt off in the gym to come here and perform for all the people and I make it look easy. I don’t care if I don’t go past four rounds or solve all the questions that people have about me. I have one mission and it is to unify all the heavyweight belts.”

After the fight Scott, upset by his performance, said, “I got caught. I don’t really remember what happened because I never saw the shot coming. I know he caught me with the left hook. I am so disappointed. I trained really hard. It is just awful.

In what turned out to be a highly entertaining rematch of former world champion, Juan Manuel Lopez made it two for two against Daniel Ponce De Leon in by scoring a 2nd round stoppage in a scheduled 10 round Jr. Lightweight bout.

De Leon struck 1st in round two by scoring a knockdown from a hard left hook. Lopez came back by depositing De Leon from a right hook. A flurry sent De Leon to the canvas for a 2nd time. Lopez finished the fight by landing some hard power shots on the ropes and the bout was stopped at 2:44 of round two.

Lopez, 129 lbs of Caguas, PR is now 34-3 with 31 knockouts. De Leon, 128 3/4 lbs of West Covina, CA is now 45-6.

Former world title challenger Daniel Jacobs took out Milton Nunez in round one of their scheduled 10 round Middleweight bout.

Jacobs scored three knockdowns from a left hook and the latter two came from right hands. The bout was stopped upon the third knockdown at 2:25 of round one.

Jacobs, 161 1/2 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is now 27-1 with 24 knockouts. Nunez, 162 lbs of Barranquilla, COL is now 26-10-1.

“TOE TO TOE: CANELO VS. ANGULO” A KNOCKOUT SUCCESS WITH WELL OVER 350,000 PPV BUYS

Canelo Alvarez
NEW YORK (March 14, 2014) – Last Saturday’s SHOWTIME PPV® presentation of “TOE TO TOE: Canelo vs. Angulo” generated well over 350,000 buys, Showtime Networks Inc. and event promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, announced today.

The four-fight telecast, headlined by Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez’ impressive 10th-round TKO over fellow countryman, Alfredo Angulo, was a “knockout success,” according to Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®.

“We are thrilled with the numbers from Saturday’s event,” said Espinoza. “March 8 was the first time Canelo Alvarez headlined his own pay per view, and he decisively proved that he was ready to carry a pay per view card. Add in the near sellout crowd and there is no doubt this event was a huge success for Canelo, Golden Boy Promotions, MGM Grand, SHOWTIME and boxing as a whole.”

“The fans have spoken,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Canelo is without a doubt the brightest young star in the sport today. He’s been a huge star in Mexico for quite some time. Now there is no denying that he is a star in the United States as well. We’re already in discussions with Canelo to find the next opportunity to bring another exciting event to boxing fans worldwide.”

The Canelo vs. Angulo slugfest will premiere on SHOWTIME this Saturday, March 15, and open the live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. In the main event, undefeated Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia takes on Mauricio Herrera.

Following the telecast, ALL ACCESS: CANELO VS. ANGULO EPILOGUE will premiere on SHOWTIME. EPILOGUE, the third and final installment of the ALL ACCESS series devoted to “TOE TO TOE,” will feature unprecedented access from Fight Week in Las Vegas, highlights of the drama inside of the ring and a rare look inside of the minds of the fighters and their camps in the aftermath of the fight.

‘HUNGRY’ GARCIA OUT TO KEEP WINNING STREAK AS HERRERA DECLARES ‘HE’S FOUGHT BETTER GUYS FOR PEANUTS’ AHEAD OF WEEKEND CLASH LIVE ON BOXNATION

Danny Garcia
LONDON (March 13) – Reigning light-welterweight king Danny Garcia believes Mauricio Herrera has no idea what he has gotten himself into when the pair clash this weekend.

The 25-year-old Philadelphia native puts his world titles on the line as he goes in against the tricky Herrera in Bayamon, Puerto Rico this Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Returning to the homeland of his parents, unbeaten Garcia has vowed to put on an impressive display in front of the locals and continue his winning streak after noticing a chink in the armour of Mexican-American ace Herrera.

“When I look at him he’s not sure,” said Garcia. “He’s not sure what he’s gotten himself into. I’m sure he trained hard. One thing about boxing is you never know what’s going to happen. I came so far to prove myself and I’m so hungry to get better and continue to keep winning. I’m only 25 years old and at the beginning of my career. Whatever he’s thinking it’s not going to stop me,” he said.

As the current top dog of the 140 pound division after capturing the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world titles, Garcia has gone from strength-to-strength after bursting to prominence with his stunning victory over Amir Khan in 2012.

That win followed subsequent triumphs as he re-matched Erik Morales, overcame Zab Judah and highly impressed against feared Argentine puncher Lucas Matthysse.

Since his win over Matthysse last September, Garcia has begun to be recognised as one of boxing’s best, something which is only beginning to register with the man himself.

“It’s just starting to sink in, my last couple of fights I showed a lot. In the Judah fight I showed that I could take a punch. In the Matthysse fight it just showed how much more experienced I am and how I can control the fight. I feel I’m growing into being a true champion and definitely one of the best pound-for-pound fighters,” said Garcia.

Over the last year a certain assurance and confidence in the ring has started to take over Garcia, who is enjoying his time in the limelight.

“I’m confident – it’s kind of like you’re on cruise control. You’re adjusting to the bumps in the road. I’m just flying and every time a problem comes I just find a way to get around it. That’s how it is when I’m against contenders. Being a champion is definitely everything,” he said.

Known for his outspoken and blunt nature, Garcia’s father and trainer Angel is expecting his son’s dominance to continue and has written of Herrera’s chances.

“March 15th, [Danny] will still be the undefeated champ of the world,” said Angel. “Herrera, you’ve got to give him hope. Hope that he doesn’t get knocked out. You’ve got to give the man hope. His family is here. I respect that. They love him. There is nothing wrong with that,” he said.

“But come March 15th [Danny] is still the undefeated champ of the world. This isn’t something that just happened. This was a dream, a dream that I had when Danny was a child. Danny is meant to be. Dreams aren’t meant to be broken – not this one anyway.

“On March 15th, he will still be the undefeated champ of the world – I will promise you that,” Angel stated.

The 33-year-old Herrera though, who was the last man to beat the WBO light-welterweight world champion, the formidable Ruslan Provodnikov, appears unaffected by the claims from the Garcia camp and knows this fight represents a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I started boxing with my two brothers when I was 13 with no gear, bare hands. My father used to watch and get a good laugh out of it. My older brother got me my first punching bag but my mother was the first one that took me to the gym, to a gym at a church. I truly have the support of my family,” said Herrera.

“I trained well, very well. I don’t take this fight lightly; fighting Danny is not something to take lightly. But I’ve fought guys tougher than him for peanuts,” he said boldly.

“My biggest purse before this fight was $30,000. I’ve worked in construction and other handy jobs. This is my opportunity. This is my chance and I’m not about to let it pass me by,” Herrera said.

The stacked card from the Golden Boy Promotions show also sees exciting knockout artist Deontay Wilder continue his march towards a world title shot as he faces the highly respected Malik Scott in his toughest fight to date.

Plus, Puerto Rican favourite Juan Manuel Lopez is back in action as he returns to face Mexican hitman Daniel Ponce De Leon in a fight that guarantees fireworks.

ALL-STAR LINEUP HEADING TO PUERTO RICO ON SATURDAY, MARCH 15 AT COLISEO RUBEN RODRIGUEZ IN BAYAMON LIVE

LOS ANGELES (March 12, 2014) – As Puerto Rico prepares for a stellar SHOWTIME® doubleheader featuring Danny “Swift” Garcia’s unified super lightweight world title defense against Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera and the heavyweight clash between unbeaten Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott, fans at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon can get ready for even more explosive action as the undercard will feature top contenders Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs, Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez and Ed “The Lion” Paredes, future stars of Puerto Rican boxing. Additionally, there’s the previously announced SHO EXTREME® headliner pitting former world champions Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Daniel Ponce de Leon against each other in a rematch for the WBO International Junior Lightweight Title. Also in action will be John Karl Sosa, Prichard Colon and Pedro Vicente.

In the 10-round SHO EXTREME co-feature, Jacobs will look to keep the momentum from his knockout win over Giovanni Lorenzo going when he battles Miami’s Milton “El Misil” Nunez.

After surviving a harrowing battle with cancer that not only threatened his promising career, but his life, Brooklyn’s Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs (26-1, 23 KOs) turned into boxing’s miracle man, returning after more than 19 months away to knock out Josh Luteran in 73 seconds on October 20, 2012. Two more stoppage wins over Chris Fitzpatrick and Keenan Collins followed before the 27-year-old made a statement to the world with his third round technical knockout over former world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo. On Saturday, Jacobs is back to face Colombia native Milton “El Misil” Nunez (26-9-1, 24 KOs). A 26-year-old power puncher, Nunez’ last nine wins have come by way of knockout, all in four rounds or less, so expect fireworks from start to finish in this one.

Toa Baja’s Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KOs) will be back in the ring for the first time since his gutsy WBO title fight against Ricky Burns last May, facing an opponent to be announced in an eight-round lightweight bout. Forced to withdraw from the fight after the ninth round against Burns due to injury, the 30-year-old contender, who has scored 12 of his last 13 wins by knockout, is eager to get back to another title fight as soon as possible.

In an eight-round welterweight bout, Hollywood, Florida’s Ed “The Lion” Paredes (34-3-1, 22 KOs) will continue his quest for a world title opportunity when he meets the Dominican Republic’s Yoryi Estrella (10-9-2, 7 KOs). Currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBC, and ninth by the WBA and IBF, the 28-year-old Paredes will bring a 14-fight winning streak into the ring with him against the hard-hitting and upset-minded Estrella.

Fans in Bayamon will witness an all-Puerto Rican clash in the junior welterweight division on Saturday when 21-year-old Caguas phenomenon John Karl Sosa (8-0, 6 KOs) attempts to keep his perfect record intact in a four-round matchup against Toa Baja’s Antonio Sanchez (5-2-2, 3 KOs), who is coming off back-to-back bouts against unbeatens Jamel Herring and Ivan Redkach.

Plus, 2012 Puerto Rican Olympic team member Prichard “Digget” Colon (7-0, 7 KOs) of Orocovis risks his unbeaten slate in a six-round super welterweight bout against an opponent to be determined. In the four-round featherweight opener, Mayaguez’ Pedro Vicente (4-0, 1 KO), who prepared for this fight in the Danny Garcia gym in Philadelphia, faces Bayamon’s own Karl Garcia (3-2, 1 KO).

“Garcia vs. Herrera,” a 12-round WBC Super Lightweight World Title on Saturday, March 15, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Swift Promotions in association with PR Best Boxing and sponsored by Corona and AT&T. The co-main event, Deontay Wilder vs. Malik Scott, is a 12-round WBC Final Heavyweight eliminator bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast will air live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming (SAP). In the main event on the SHO EXTREME 7 p.m. ET/PT, (Delayed on the West Coast) portion of the card, former world champions Juan Manuel Lopez and Daniel Ponce de Leon square off in a 10-round rematch for the WBO International Junior Lightweight Title.

Tickets priced at $25, $50, $75, $150, $200 and $400 plus applicable taxes and service charges are on sale now at www.tcpr.com and by calling 787-792-5000.

What the fighters and executives said Wednesday:

DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA, UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION
“I had a tremendous camp. This Saturday I’m going to win for my people in Puerto Rico and take my belt home with me.

“I love it here in Puerto Rico. I love the weather and the beautiful people. Everything about the culture is like where I grew up in Philadelphia. It’s just like Puerto Rico but it’s just the city life. But it’s the same thing. We eat the same food. We listen to the same music. Everything is the same but it’s just a little part of North Philadelphia. Everything is the same except for the snow.

“I trained in Philadelphia. I had a good training camp in Philadelphia. I did everything I was supposed to do. I didn’t take shortcuts. I came to Puerto Rico a week before the fight for my training. I’m 110 percent. I’m in the best shape. I am ready. I did what I always do and I’m ready.”

MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA, SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER
“I started boxing with my two brothers when I was 13 with no gear, bare hands. My father used to watch and get a good laugh out of it. My older brother got me my first punching bag but my mother was the first one that took me to the gym, to a gym at a church. I truly have the support of my family.

“I trained well, very well. I don’t take this fight lightly; fighting Danny is not something to take lightly. But I’ve fought guys tougher than him for peanuts.

“My biggest purse before this fight was $30,000. I’ve worked in construction and other handy jobs. This is my opportunity. This is my chance and I’m not about to let it pass me by.”

ANGEL GARCIA, DANNY GARCIA’S FATHER AND TRAINER
“March 15, [Danny] will still be the undefeated Champ of the world. Herrera, you’ve got to give him hope. Hope that he doesn’t get knocked out. You’ve got to give the man hope. His family is here. I respect that. They love him. There is nothing wrong with that. But come March 15 [Danny] is still the undefeated Champ of the world. This isn’t something that just happened. This was a dream, a dream that I had when Danny was a child. Danny is meant to be. Dreams aren’t meant to be broken not this one anyway.

“He [Herrera] has fought guys, opponents. You’re fighting in Puerto Rico now. Danny is 100 percent Puerto Rican. I don’t care what they say. He is my blood. I am Puerto Rican. He’s Puerto Rican. On March 15, he will still be the undefeated Champ of the world. And I will promise you that.

“I won’t put my head involved in this one because my daughters got nervous. They told me, ‘Dad, please don’t say that.’ People thought that it was a joke. I really meant that. Would Herrera’s coach do that? No, because that is the difference between his team and our team. My soul is in the ring with Danny. I would die for Danny and he would die for me.”

WILLIE SILVA, MAURICIO HERRERA’S TRAINER
“I’m pleased to be back in Puerto Rico. I want to thank Golden Boy for giving us this opportunity, an opportunity that we have been waiting for some time now and we are grateful for that.

“We are here to win this fight. We are not here to see if we can win, we are here because we know we CAN win.

“Danny Garcia’s parents claim he is Puerto Rican, but he is NOT a Puerto Rican, he’s from Philadelphia. He doesn’t even speak Spanish.

“We came to Puerto Rico, ready to fight. Mauricio is ready and watch, come Saturday night Mauricio is going to shock more than one. We are leaving Puerto Rico with Danny’s belts.”

DEONTAY WILDER, WBC CONTINENTAL AMERICAS HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION
[About fighting in Puerto Rico]”I feel great! Like Tony the Tiger! I have lots of fans out here, a lot more than I thought I did. They showed me love right when I arrived. When I found out I was fighting in Puerto Rico I was super excited! Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with beautiful people and beautiful weather!

[About Malik Scott’s style] “I haven’t seen Malik Scott personally fight but he’s been in my camp before. He was one of my sparring partners in my past camps. He was a lot of help and very competitive. He knows my style and what I bring to the table. We know each other’s style. Whoever gets first to the punch will win. The smarter and better looking person will win and that’s going to be me.”

MALIK SCOTT, TOP HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER
“I am extremely proud of Danny Garcia. This is my first time meeting him. Congratulations comrade. The thing that prides me the most about fighting on his undercard is that any good coach can take a fighter and smooth out his jagged edges, but Angel Garcia he took his son from scratch. That is the definition of a true and great trainer so I am proud of him for that.

“In my opinion, Deontay Wilder and I are the biggest fight in the heavyweight division right now. I am extremely excited and I am taking on a dangerous fighter with the magnitude of Deontay’s punching power and the aura that has been built around him. It will take that type of fighter for me to rise to the great level that I believe I am going to be at come Saturday night. I believe out of everyone that has fought Deontay I have the highest skill caliber. I am not coming to test him; I am coming to beat him. I am from Philly. I live in California. I’m happy for this opportunity and come Saturday night I am going to take full advantage of it. ”

JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ, WBO INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION
“I’m very grateful to God for having presented me with this opportunity. I’m grateful for the people from Puerto Rico for their continuous support.

“This is going to be a great fight. He’s going to try to get a knockout, I’m going to do my job as well and definitely the one that is better prepared will come out victorious, and that will be me.

“I came here to show Puerto Rico and the rest of the world that Juanma Lopez has still some game to show.

“It was not mere coincidence that I won the first fight against Ponce De Leon, I won because I’m a better fighter. On Saturday, March 15, Ponce better be ready, because I’m ready and I’m not about losing.”

DANIEL PONCE DE LEON, FORMER WBC FEATHERWEIGHT WOLRD CHAMPION
“I’ve been training hard and I’m ready. There’s not much left to do to prepare other than make weight on Thursday and give my best on Saturday.

“This is going to be a great fight. I feel very good because I prepared well. I’m ready. This is the comeback of my career. I’m ready.

“Juanma has a heavy punch. Most of his wins have been by way of knockout and that is something to watch out for, but I can also pack a punch and he better watch out because I might knock him out. ”

IVAN PADILLA, BAYAMON SPORTS DIRECTOR
“Bayamon is proud of hosting Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera. We welcome boxing because we love boxing. We are always ready to be boxing hosts.

“We are able to host events of this magnitude because we have great people that help us put them together.

“We cordially welcome Danny and his father. We know his mom is from here, from Bayamon and we are very proud.”

ERIC GOMEZ, VICE PRESIDENT OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS
“It’s always a great pleasure to be back in Puerto Rico. But this time is different because we are bringing a big card to the island with the help of one of the best, PR Best Boxing. They have a great team in Puerto Rico and this is the beginning of something big.

“We are presenting a main event with the fighter of the moment, one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, Danny Garcia, and this is particularly special for me, because I saw him grow.

“I met Angel and Danny in the Olympic Trials and I saw something special in him. He was a champion in the making.

“I knew he was special the first time I saw him fight as an amateur at the Olympic Trials. His style was unique; he packed a combination of Tito Trinidad, Wilfredo Gomez, Miguel Cotto and Juanma [Juan Manuel Lopez]’s styles, truly impressive. So, to see him here today, being the great champion than he is, is truly special for me. ”

DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA AND MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Danny and Angel Garcia
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us today for the Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera international media conference call. We are going to start first with Mauricio, as well as his trainer, Willie Silva, and then Danny Garcia will be joining us. I would now like to introduce Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions who will talk about the fight and make the formal introductions.

Richard Schaefer
Thank you and welcome, everybody to today’s conference call. For Danny Garcia, this fight means coming home, coming home to Puerto Rico. It is the first time he’s going to be fighting there, and for Mauricio Herrera it’s not coming home, but it is taking home. He wants to take home all of those belts back home to Riverside, California, so for both of those guys in a way coming home and taking home is sort of like the slogan of the show here. With Danny Garcia we have what I believe is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and with Mauricio Herrera we have somebody who has been waiting for this opportunity, who is extremely skilled, knows how to be a spoiler as well, he’s the last man to beat Provodnikov as well, so, I think we have certainly the ingredients for a terrific matchup, and Danny fired on by his crowd there in Puerto Rico and Mauricio wanting to get this belt.

The opening bout on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will bring to you one of the most talked about and most exciting heavyweights, Deontay Wilder against Malik Scott, as the 12-round WBC Final Heavyweight Eliminator. The winner of that fight will be immediately fighting the winner of Arreola and Stiverne, so there’s going to be much at stake there as well. Deontay is extremely fan friendly outside of the ring, and of course inside of the ring even more so. He’s a tremendous personality, a tremendous puncher, and a lot of people feel that he is America’s best hope to bring the heavyweight championship back to the United States.

I do want to mention as well that SHOWTIME EXTREME is going live as well with a couple of fights. The main event on the SHOWTIME EXTREME telecast is another mouth-watering showdown with Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon, which obviously is a rematch, a 10-round WBO International Junior Lightweight Championship.

The card takes place a week from Saturday, March 15, at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Puerto Rico, and is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, with promotions in association with PR Best Boxing. I want to thank Peter Rivera, the President of PR Best Boxing, for all his efforts and all his hard work to make this card a reality from Puerto Rico. I want to thank our sponsors, Corona, AT&T and Casamigos Tequila, and want to mention as well that the Wilder/Scott fight is presented in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions.

SHOWTIME starts at 7 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will go live at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific, and it’s going to be in Spanish as well. Tickets are selling extremely fast. When I talked to Peter he believes it will be a sellout in Bayamon, so please make sure that you let the people know that a limited number of tickets is still available starting at $25, $50, $75, $150, $200 and $400, so make sure if you are in Puerto Rico that you are obviously going to watch this live.

First up I’d like to introduce to you Mauricio Herrera’s trainer, Willie Silva, who will give us some insights on how they have prepared and what the strategy will be, and how the whole camp went, and so on. So if I could please turn it over to Willie Silva.

Willie Silva
I’m happy to be here because I think we’re going to take the fight. We’re going to beat this guy and we’re going to bring this championship to California.

R. Schaefer
Mauricio, they call him “El Maestro” Herrera, with an excellent record of 20 wins and 3 losses, of Riverside, California, is known as a very fierce junior welterweight contender, has been a professional boxer since 2007, and made waves in the welterweight division. And when you are a fighter you obviously always look for these opportunities to go against the best, and there’s no question about it with Danny Garcia, he is the best junior welterweight.

But Mauricio knows a little bit about going in against the best in the division, one of them obviously Junior Welterweight World Champion, Ruslan Provodnikov, I mentioned it before, he’s the last man to beat him. And he is ready to go March 15, he is ready to go into the lion’s den there in Puerto Rico and to take his long awaited job as the World Championship. It’s a pleasure now for me to introduce to you, Mauricio Herrera.

Mauricio Herrera
I want to say thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for the last year for giving me this opportunity to try for a world title. I just want to say that I’m ready and, like I said, I’m never in a boring fight and I know we didn’t take this fight just because it was a world title opportunity, we also took it because we think we can win this fight and it’s going to be a great fight. Like you said, I’m a spoiler, so you’d better look out for that.

Q
My first question is for you, Richard, and then I’m going to go to Mauricio. How much of a danger is there of a let down, given that this is the first time in a while where Danny has been the favorite against a guy that some people don’t think has a real shot?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think it’s going to be a question you’re really going to need to ask Danny. But I do know that suddenly it’s like reverse roles, Danny has always been like the underdog, and never really gotten I think the credit he deserves. But I think with his last performance against Lucas Matthysse he changed a lot of people’s minds and opened a lot of people’s eyes, so I think he’s going to be in a different position. And that certainly is something from a training point of view, I talked to other fighters before, when you do fight somebody where you are the favorite, you know, do you really maybe skip a step here and skip a step there and say, well, you know, that shouldn’t be too difficult after everybody else I fought, and so on. From a mental point of view, I definitely think that that could be the case, but you need to ask Danny that question.

I think going to Puerto Rico might look like an advantage, his homecoming and first time fighting there in the place where his parents were born and his grandparents are living, you know. But that might be not necessarily a positive either because what this does, it puts tremendous additional pressure on Danny to perform because he obviously wants to get the approval of the Puerto Rican people and he wants to perform and entertain in front of the Puerto Rican people. And as I said before, that’s where you enter Mauricio Herrera, who is a known spoiler and who knows how to take advantage of these, maybe, cutting a step here or there in training, or the added pressure in Puerto Rico. Mauricio is going to come with everything to gain and nothing to lose, and these are the opponents that are the most dangerous.

Q
Picking up on something you said about him going to Puerto Rico for the first time, they currently don’t have any champions born there, and obviously he’s a champion, he must feel a certain amount of pressure –

R. Schaefer
Yes, it’s going to be a lot of pressure on Danny during Fight Week, being there in Puerto Rico, absolutely. So, I think, yes, it’s great for Danny to be fighting in Puerto Rico, but since this is the first time, there definitely will be more demands on him, from a public relations stand point, from media, from fans, and from whatsoever, so all that are points which Mauricio Herrera, I’m sure knows and is ready to exploit.

Q
Mauricio, it occurred to me that you might know how to make guys uncomfortable in the ring. Do you see this as that same opportunity, as a similar opportunity to call yourself a spoiler?

M. Herrera
Oh yes, most definitely, I think my style does that to the guys, especially the stronger guys, my style tends to come out and blossom even more. And I feel that this fight, I know when Danny fights he is fighting tough and no-namers, but I don’t think it takes a really tough guy and a big name to beat Danny. It could just be a random guy like me who has some skills, some smartness in their arsenal and again an awkward style that can defeat Danny. And that’s what I’m going in really confident for.

Q
What is your style, how do you neutralize what other guys do well? Because he’s been in there with Erik Morales, he’s been in there with Zab Judah, he’s been in there with Amir Khan, athletic types, and of course Kendall Holt who once dropped Tim Bradley, what can you bring to the table that none of those guys did in terms of your style?

M. Herrera
I think the biggest difference between me and those guys is a lot of those guys had a lot of amateur backgrounds. You know, I don’t have a big amateur background, so I’m not following with the basic punches and rhythms as those guys have and that Danny can see and is used to, you know, I’m a little off rhythm on my shots. And also I drill with power at times, and sometimes I have no power, sometimes I go with speed and I can go inside, I can control distance, and I’m hard to hit, if you’ve seen my fights, so I think all of that will make a big difference from those fights and from me.

Q
Do you feel like that in the Provodnikov fight some people thought that maybe he deserved to win, but in the Alvarado fight that you kind of maybe got ripped off a little bit? How do you see the result of those two fights, since they’re the two biggest names that you faced, both of them, who went on to win world titles?

M. Herrera
Yes, I felt that with the Provodnikov fight, it was a close fight but I felt I had landed more punches, so I felt comfortable that I was going to take it. Even Provodnikov himself said he felt that I won, that I was a better man that night and outsmarted him. With Alvarado it was a different fight, I fought a different style with him. We went in there trying to push him back, he’s a bigger, tougher guy and with him, which I got to show a lot too, and I thought that fight was pretty close too. I mean, if you see that fight, Alvarado missed a lot of shots, so either way I felt like, you know what, going into his turf, his promotion, that the judges were going to be on his side. Only one judge gave me one round, so when I saw that I figured I had no chance even if I won three or four rounds more. You can see the way they were judging I was not going to make that decision. But I thought it was a very close fight. I mean, I did take punishment on my face, but those were like three, four big shots that he took on me, but I thought it was a very close fight. Yes, so I thought with Alvarado it was close, and with Provodnikov it could have gone either way as well.

Q
Do you feel like you’re being overlooked a little bit in this fight with the type of opposition that you have faced?

M. Herrera
Yes, I’m feeling like I’m being overlooked. And maybe part of that is because I’m not really known, nobody really knows me. I mean, the same way with Provodnikov when he went up against Bradley, I mean, I’ve seen comments and hear people say, who’s this guy? Who’s this ESPN guy? He isn’t going to do anything. What is Bradley fighting this guy for? And as you see what happened, you know, it was a different story. But I feel the same way, I mean, when people don’t know who you are and they see you have some losses, they don’t know your whole story and your whole background, and they see a knockout percentage and they go by that too. But all that doesn’t matter, you know, with boxing anything can happen. And they’re going to see that I’m at that level, and that I will rise to the occasion.

Q
Mauricio, you said that your style was a little complicated, you have a different kind of style, what kind of style does Danny have and how will you fight him, how would you describe Danny?

M. Herrera
Well, you know Danny’s a very good fighter. I’m going to have to watch out for everything. He’s got a good right hand, he’s got a good left hand. I’m going to have to be careful. I’m going to have to pick my spots, know when to fight him inside, and know when to box, so I have to be careful with everything. It’s going to be a tough fight.

Q
Richard mentioned that Danny has added pressure, he’s fighting in Puerto Rico, there might be distractions, do you think that’s an advantage for you? Does that make you comfortable to know that you’re at ease, that you don’t have that?

M. Herrera
You know, I’m not really at ease. I can’t say I’m at ease because it is going to be a tough fight. But, yes, he’s going to have some added pressure. He’s going to want to win for his people. He’s going to be fighting in Puerto Rico, he’s going to want to win for them, and obviously, you know, I’m going to use that to my advantage. But, yes, but it’s not going to be an easy fight. I’m not at ease. There is going to be some pressure on my part as well.

Q
Mauricio, you came close to fighting a world title fight before against Brandon Rios, how did you feel when that fight disintegrated?

M. Herrera
Well, I was kind of disappointed. I thought maybe that was my time to shine. Brandon Rios was a perfect opponent. And, yes, for a reason I guess that didn’t happen, which didn’t matter, I mean, because now I’m fighting for another big fight and I guess this is now my time.

Q
And you explained a little bit about Danny Garcia, but how do you beat a Danny Garcia, in your opinion, with your style?

M. Herrera
Well, as you should know, I throw a lot of punches. I use the jab very well. A lot of fighters don’t use the jab. I don’t think Danny is used to seeing that. You know, I can come out different ways. I can come out to pressure him. I can come out to box. I’ve shown that I can do a little bit of both. And I have really great defense. I think the defense is the main key. You know, I’m not that easy to hit and I have a very good chin. So, I know I can out punch a guy and it’s not going to be an easy fight, but when it gets down and when we have to go and exchange, you know, I can do that too. So, I’m really ready on all angles.

Q
You started as a professional very late. You were already in your late twenties when you finally started. What kept you from turning professional?

M. Herrera
Well, I started when I was 13, but my first trainer, Rudy, just kept training me along and just helping the next fighters that were coming in, I was getting older. And you know it was funny because he said that I was always too young to go pro, and I was in my twenties, and by the time I told him I wanted to go pro I was like 25, 26, then he told me I was too old. So, it wasn’t going to happen, so I left, I had to leave him. I was very dedicated with him, but I had to part ways at that time and train on my own for a while, and then that’s how I got connected with Willy, so connection to some pro fights, and at 27 I turned pro. And I don’t think it’s bad after five years that I got a chance to fight for a world title, and I thank the Garcia’s again for giving me the opportunity.

W. Silva
I have a comment. Danny Garcia never faced a guy like Mauricio Herrera and it’s going to be a nightmare that night.

R. Schaefer
Before I’m going to turn it over to Danny, I want to make some opening comments. Obviously, Danny Garcia, what he has achieved in the last few years I think there is no fighter in no weight class who has done that outside of Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather, and that is taking on the best. And when you look at what he has accomplished, we know all the names, I mean, it really is like the Who’s Who of the Junior Welterweight Division, some of the biggest names in the sport, period, he has taken on, and in most of those fights he went in as the underdog, people were not giving him much respect, but I think all that’s changed. In his last performance against Lucas Matthysse I think he made everybody believers.

What is particularly impressive and why I think as well that he is obviously the Unified Super Lightweight World Champion currently, clearly the number one rated Super Lightweight boxer in the world, but in my books after Floyd and Andre Ward I believe because of what Danny has achieved cumulative, fight after fight and how he has shown how he has been dealing with speed, the fastest guy in the sport may be Amir Khan, how he neutralized that speed, he was confused, he evaded the first few rounds, but then adjusted, adapted and dominated the fight. How he took away the power of the biggest puncher maybe in the sport, Lucas Matthysse, and how he took away the experience for maybe two of the most experienced fighters to date, next to Bernard Hopkins, Zab Judah and Erik Morales, so this guy knows how to deal with speed at the highest level, with power at the highest level, and with experience at the highest level.

I mean, you look at that and you do that fight after fight after fight, I really believe the pound for pound list is reserved for exactly people like that, not because they had one great fight or had an amateur career and things like that. No, you earned that spot. And I think if one guy has earned it it’s Danny Garcia, and I believe that Danny Garcia today, in my list, is number three pound for pound as well. I don’t have to tell you all the achievements he’s done. He is exciting. He is a terrific fighter, we know that. He’s a tremendous person, human being outside of the ring as well, always fun to be around with, and it really is an honor for me to be able to work for Danny Garcia and for his team.

And it is a pleasure now for me to turn it over and introduce to you the undisputed Super Lightweight World Champion, Danny “Swift” Garcia.

Danny Garcia
Thank you, Richard. I love being a part of the Golden Boy family, and thanks to all the media for tuning in, and thanks for everybody in Golden Boy. I’m ready for March 15.

Q
Can you talk about when it first became something in your mind, that you said to yourself, ‘I would really love to go and fight in Puerto Rico,’ even though you weren’t born there, but you certainly have a lot of roots there with your family.

D. Garcia
Yes, it’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, just to reach out to my fans in Puerto Rico, because I am Puerto Rican and they don’t have a champion right now, so I think this gave me the perfect time for me to go over there and show the Puerto Rican fans that they have a true champion. And I’m excited about it. It’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, and it happened, and I thank Golden Boy for that, for making it happen.

Q
Have you visited Puerto Rico in the past?

D. Garcia
Yes, I visited Puerto Rico before. I was there a few times. I was there like a year and a half ago, and I think I was there as a kid.

Q
Are your parents both born there? I think Angel was, but I’m not sure if they were both born there.

D. Garcia
Yes, my mom and dad are born in Puerto Rico.

Q
So, do you still have family members that live there?

D. Garcia
Yes, my whole dad’s side of the family lives in Puerto Rico, and my mom’s side of the family, they moved to the States when they were young.
Q
I don’t know, do you get the feeling from those that you’ve spoken to that are there, either family members or friends of your family, that people are excited to have the fight and that they’re going to adopt you as their champion, basically, because of your Puerto Rican heritage?

D. Garcia
Yes, they love me, and they can’t wait. They call me and tell me every day that people in Puerto Rico they love me and they’re excited for the fight and they’re going to the fight, so there’s no doubt in my mind that the people in Puerto Rico are going to be there for me that night.

Q
Can you talk about what went into the fact that you aren’t Floyd’s next opponent? I don’t know if it was that he didn’t want to fight you. I’ve been told that your camp decided that you would love to fight Floyd at some point but not right now and maybe in the future. Can you address that a little bit?

D. Garcia
You know, I let Al Haymon do what he does and I’ll let Richard do what they do. We weren’t really pressing for the fight, we just let Golden Boy do their job and I let Al do his job. I never question what Al does, I never question what my team does, so whoever they tell me to fight, I’ll fight and I’ll train and I’ll get ready for it.

Q
Would you have wanted Mayweather?

D. Garcia
I’m a boxer, at the end of the day I like to fight the best, so you know that’s what my manager wanted, and that’s what my team wanted, and that’s what I want.

Q
So you’re okay that you go from the potential of fighting Floyd for all that money and all that glory, to fighting a good fighter like Herrera, but certainly nobody’s going to mistake Mauricio Herrera with Floyd, are you okay with that?

D. Garcia
Destiny is destiny. I’m okay with whatever happens. Like I said before, I don’t question my manager’s job, I never did, and I think that’s why we’re in the position today where people think I should be fighting him and people think I deserve to fight because my manager and my promoter did a great job so far. So, I think they’re doing a great job and I’m doing my job, and hopefully the fight might happen one day.

Q
Was any part of that in your mind about the fact that, you know, you’re still a young fighter, you’re only 25-years-old, that you really weren’t in any particular hurry to go to 147 pounds? Are you comfortable with 140 and you figured you wanted to stay there for a little while longer? Was weight an issue in your mind?

D. Garcia
Yes, like you said, I’m still young, I’m 25-years-old, and I’m growing, I’m building my own legacy, and 140, it’s a little hard to make, it’s a sacrifice, but I’m pretty sure once I go up to 147 it’s going to be hard too. So I don’t think the weight was an issue, but I feel like you know I grew into the 140 pound weight class and I feel really strong, I feel real good making the weight, and I feel so good in the gym, so I didn’t feel like it was possible for me to move up yet.

R. Schaefer
I just want to quickly add to that. The experience of fighting in Puerto Rico was actually something Danny had personally spoken to me for the past couple of years or so, during fights he comes to me and he’s telling me, ‘I’ve got to fight in Puerto Rico. You’ve got to do a fight in Puerto Rico.’ And so when you look at the guys he fought in the last couple of years, it wasn’t just really natural to take a fight like that to Puerto Rico, but we felt this was the perfect opportunity to fulfill one of Danny’s dreams, which was to fight in Puerto Rico. And, I hope it’s the first of many.

I think as it relates to Floyd, I’m getting more and more questions, hey, is Danny going to fight Floyd, and so there’s more and more excitement building up about that fight, so assuming Floyd handles the challenges ahead of him, do I believe that maybe sometime next year, maybe a year from now, Cinco de Mayo 2015 we might see, assuming Floyd keeps on winning, are going to see a Floyd, Danny Garcia fight? Absolutely. And I can just imagine how much of an anticipated showdown that will be. And, Danny, you just heard that, how mature he is in answering your questions. And, yes, he’s young and he’s going to be ready, and if the opportunity would be today he’ll fight him today, but, you know everything at its time.

Q
I just wanted to clarify, do you know when the first time you went to Puerto Rico was?

D. Garcia
About two years ago.

Q
Your mom said that you always dreamed of being a world champion, what allowed you to have such large dreams?

D. Garcia
You know, being the world champion was everything to me. My dream was always, first, to go to the Olympics and get gold, and then turn pro, but that didn’t happen. And so I just stayed focused, I trained hard, and I became World Champion and I’m proud.

Q
When did you start training and stuff like that? As soon as you walked into the gym, or did it take a few years?

D. Garcia
No, when I walked into the gym when I was a kid everybody used to say, ‘Olympics, Olympics,’ so I really didn’t know what it was until I did my research and I was like, wow, the Olympics sound big, so I made that my goal, because everybody else kind of wanted to go to the Olympics and stuff like that, so I wanted to win gold and become world champion. But I’m happy that I’m world champion, and I’m here.

Q
Danny, I’d like your take on what Richard said about you being number three pound for pound behind Floyd and Ward.

D. Garcia
I fought the best, I never turned down a fight, I beat the best, and I think the pound for pound list is about fighting the best and beating the best. And like he said, there are a few good fighters out there who did it, and I’m one of them.

Q
I’d like also your scouting report, your assessment technically, especially of Mauricio Herrera, a lot of people who will be tuning in haven’t seen him, he’s on ESPN a lot, but I’d like your assessment of Herrera, please.

D. Garcia
Oh yes, he’s a good, tough fighter. I know he wants to be world champion and I know he’s going to come to fight, but I fought many amateur fights, I fought the best pros in the world, and I don’t think there’s anything he can show me differently than I already do. So, I’m going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s go in there, make adjustments, and get the crowd excited.

Q
Is Angel trying to be a little bit more chill and not stir up the pot? Where’s Angel?

D. Garcia
No, he’s a businessman, so he’s probably out there handling business or getting something done. He’s always on the move. He doesn’t like to be in one spot. You know he’s all over the place, but he’ll be there March 15.

Q
Was there any need for you and your father to have the conversation about hey, Danny, this is a big opportunity, but don’t be let down, you’re the favorite, but we can’t afford a letdown.

D. Garcia
Man, I train hard for every fight. I put 110 percent in the gym. All I know is hard work and dedication, so there’s no thought in my mind saying that I’m going to let anybody down, because I know what I bring to the fight. I know how hard I work in the gym, and no matter who believes in me, or who thinks I’m a winner, or who thinks I’m not going to win in future or past fights, I know what I’m capable of doing. I know how hard I work. And that’s why every time at the end of the fight I come out victorious because I know the pain and the sacrifice that I put my body through to win these fights and excite my fans.

Q
Have you and your father had any conversation about not getting distracted when you get over there because people are going to demand that you go here, you’re going to have to make this appearance, you’re going to be possibly embraced as a Puerto Rican champion?

D. Garcia
No, we’re not going to get distracted. We know what we’ve got to do. We’re going to do the same thing we always do, we’re going to stay focused until Friday night and then we’re going to get the job done. And then after that we can make the trips and go visit whoever we want to visit.

Q
Along the names that you’ve fought, Morales, Holt, Amir Khan, Nate Campbell, Zab Judah, is there anything that Mauricio can show you, he says he’s different from all of them, is there anything that he can show you that you haven’t seen?

D. Garcia
I mean, we’ll just have to see. We’ll just have to see. You know, talk is cheap. You know me, I’ve never been the one to talk and say what he’s going to do or what he can do. I’m just going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s win the fight. I’m not really worried about what he’s going to do. As long as my head’s on my shoulders and I’m focused, I know I’m going to get the job done.

Q
First of all, where are you in the stages of your training?

D. Garcia
You know I’m still going hard. I’m still training hard. I’m at my peak right now and I feel great, man, and my weight is great. I’m ready to fight tomorrow. So, I’m on cruise control.

Q
What’s the most exciting thing about the fact that you’re about to fight in Puerto Rico for the first time?

D. Garcia
It’s very exciting, because this is where my family’s from, this is where my roots are and it’s something I always asked Richard. And I think this is very special to me because this is one of my dreams that I always dreamed of, and to go over there and fight in front of all the Puerto Rican fans that are going to be there is amazing. I’ve never fought in an arena where every single fan was mine, and it’s going to be very special to me and I’m going to deliver.

Q
When Rocky Martinez lost his title and there was a lot of buzz about Puerto Rico not having a world champion, you tweeted, “Puerto Rico still has one champion.” What motivated you to get that tweet out?

D. Garcia
I don’t think it’s fair that you can say I’m not a Puerto Rican fighter because I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico, when my blood is Puerto Rican. So I had to let the fans know, hey, I’m a Puerto Rican fighter and that’s just the way it is, and March 15 that’s why we got this fight in Puerto Rico, to solidify me as a Puerto Rican champion.

Q
Do you get more excited about fighting in your homeland?

D. Garcia
Yes, I’m very excited about fighting in my homeland. It’s always been a dream of mine, and I can’t wait. I know that the fans in Puerto Rico are very excited, I’m very excited, and it’s going to be a grand show that night.

Q
So, if the fight is successful for you, are you hoping to come back and fight in Puerto Rico again?

D. Garcia
Yes, I would love to. I would love to. You know, first we’ve got to handle March 15, and in the future if there’s an opportunity, I’m always down for it. Let’s do it.

Q
I want Danny to elaborate on this opponent, when it was first brought up, hey, this is the guy that we want to fight, how did you and your team take that, and did it take long for you guys to agree to it?

D. Garcia
As soon as they told me about it, just like any other opponent, we never turned down an opponent. We believe in destiny, so whomever they say is the person, that’s the person that we accept and that’s the person that we fight. It was never, no, we want to fight him, or we want to fight him, because you know we never do that. We just believe in destiny. Whoever it is, it is, and that’s who we fight.

Q
Do you have any surprise guests at your ring entrance like guys like maybe Daddy Yankee, Tito Trinidad, somebody like kind of a signal of welcoming you to the island with open arms. Any people like that?

D. Garcia
We’ve got something in mind. We’ve got something in mind. But I don’t want to say something, I don’t want to spoil it, or if it don’t happen. Wei’re working on something and hopefully everything goes well.

Q
Have you seem the Provodnikov-Herrera fight, and did you see anything in that fight that worries you?

D. Garcia
I have seen the fight, it was a good fight. He did what he had to do. He outboxed the Russian guy, the Russian guy is strong and he got the victory. But, you know, that was a good fight to him, but he’s fighting a whole different kind of animal this fight, and I’m going to show that March 15.

Q
How do you control the emotions and not overlook a fighter like Herrera?

D. Garcia
I’ve just got to stay relaxed. I’ve got to stay focused just like I have been every other fight. I’ve got to listen to my trainer. I’ve got to stay calm. And I’ve got to go in there and get the momentum from the first round and get the crowd into it, and then win the fight.

Q
Did you used to follow some of the Puerto Rican fighters like Miguel Cotto, Tito Trinidad and some of the other fighters that have made Puerto Rico one of the best islands for boxing?

D. Garcia
Oh yes, most definitely. I was a Trinidad fan as a little kid. I’ve seen all his fights. I’ve seen Miguel for his whole career. I’ve seen a lot of the great fighters, so I’ve always been a fan of the Puerto Rican fighters and I’m happy to be one myself.

Q
Now that you mentioned that, how do you feel Juan Manuel Lopez is also fighting on the card?

D. Garcia
It’s a blessing. I think it only right to have another Puerto Rican fighter, another Puerto Rican star on the card. So it’s going to be a great night of boxing, it’s going to be a great night for the Puerto Ricans.

Q
Richard, if Danny’s successful will you bring it back here and do you think that would help you with pay-per-view for a possible Mayweather vs. Garcia fight?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think the Puerto Rican fans are great fans. They’re very passionate about boxing. And so based on what I’ve heard from Peter Rivera ticket sales are very strong, and we do anticipate to sell out at the arena. So, yes, the plan is that this is not just a one-off, and I know that Danny would love to go back to Puerto Rico as well, so you know, I can definitely see additional fights, future fights, taking place in Puerto Rico with Danny if everything goes well.

And yes, as it relates to, I think Puerto Rico wants to embrace a champion and Danny Garcia has an opportunity to become one of the best Puerto Rican champions based on what he has accomplished already. And I am sure if, and when a Floyd Mayweather fight happens that the Puerto Ricans are going to be very, very much into Danny and cheering on their man.

I’m going to have Danny make the closing statement, but I just want to quickly jump again on what I said before, because I think there were some follow up questions made and maybe I did stir the pot a bit here with the declaring Danny Garcia as the number three pound for pound fighter in the world, but I really honestly, from my heart, believe that pound for pound with this list is not about just one fight, like you look at a guy like Rigondeaux, who is a great fighter but he has really one good win. Or you look at like Klitschko, who had many great fights but the quality of his opposition is just not really there.

But Danny is fortunate that he is in a weight class, or weight classes, where the biggest and best names are fighting at and Danny never turns down a fight or a fighter, and he takes everybody on, and when he went into that fight with Matthysse all of you media guys, and I mean all of you, maybe with the exception of one or two, picked Matthysse to win. I think Danny was a 9-1 underdog, something like that, and people even said he was scared and shit like that. You know, and you saw what he did. You saw what he did. Every single time this guy steps up, and it is time now, and I hardly ever get this outspoken as that, and you guys know that, it is time now that Danny Garcia gets the proper respect.

Danny, I look forward to seeing you, and I’m going to turn it over to you now to make your closing comments.

D. Garcia
I’ll see you March 15, Richard. Oh man, I’m very excited to be fighting in Puerto Rico in front of my fans. I had a tremendous camp, I ran hundreds of miles, and I did what I had to do at the gym. I’m just happy to be going there March 15 and giving my fans in Puerto Rico a great fight and showing them why I’m one of the best fighters in the world. I’m very excited and my team is excited, and my fans are excited, and I’m my family’s excited, and I can’t wait to go out on March 15 and give the fans a great fight all around the world.
