EIGHT-TIME AND FIVE DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER MEDIA ROUNDTABLE QUOTES

Floyd_Mayweather
Atlanta (April 8) – Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather broke from his Las Vegas training camp over the weekend to attend the semifinals of the men’s college basketball tournament at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. While there, he also sat down with media members covering the tournament to discuss his upcoming WBC and Ring Magazine Welterweight World Championship mega-fight against Six-Time and Four Division World Champion Robert Guerrero taking place Saturday, May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas which will be produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV®.

Below please find quotes on an array of topics in “Money” Mayweather’s own words.

On the NCAA Tournament and Enjoyment of Basketball

“I love basketball. I honestly feel if you are not sweating and it is not blood, sweat and tears, it is not a sport. No disrespect to anyone who’s involved and they think it is a sport, but to me it’s just an activity if you don’t have blood, sweat and tears, then I think it is just an activity.

“This year I really thought it was going to be Indiana. One of my teams is still in it too, but unfortunately for me, I did not have them advancing to the Finals. I will watch the game and am probably going to watch the first half before I decide to make a bet. I have watched both teams [Lousiville and Michigan] and see how they play.”

“No one had Wichita State and I guess that is why they are called the ‘Shockers.’ Obviously that program is doing something right.

“I was telling Charles Barclay before my interview, during the Big East tournament, when Syracuse took the lead over Louisville, they started to play comfortably and Louisville came back and won the game. Same thing happened Saturday against Wichita State, but I think if Michigan takes the lead on Louisville, it is going to be harder for them to come back. Both teams are stacked with talent.

“These guys just poured their hearts out for the love of the game. I just saw that situation at Rutgers where the coach was throwing balls and choking those players and those players didn’t go over the edge. They knew they couldn’t because they weren’t in the position to pull their family out of a rough situation so they were in a tough spot. In that case you have to take the bumps and bruises that comes with those situations. But I don’t think it was right what was going on and treating those young college kids playing basketball.”

On His May 4 Championship Fight Against Robert Guerrero

“I have been off for a year now, so I am looking forward to getting back in the ring. Less than a month away, so I am excited.

“Robert Guerrero is a tough fighter, a solid, busy fighter. He only has one loss, a champion in multiple weight classes. Let’s see what he can do in there. I am sure he is going to be able to make adjustments in that squared circle just like I can, so we will have to see what happens on May 4th. We will have to see how the fight plays out. I just want the fans to tune in. It‘s going to be an action-packed fight on May 4th. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get the victory. If I have to mix it up or box. I am going to bring it.

“He [Guerrero] did something right to get here. I am sure he is going to be on his ‘A’ game, but I am not really worried about what he can do. He needs to worry about what I can do because I have already proven what I can do in the ring.

“I am very appreciative of what boxing has done for me and I am glad to have given back so much to the sport too. I always wanted to be the best and I think I have proven that over the course of my career.

“I have been pushing myself in training camp. I think my body is going to look tremendous for this fight. I can’t say how my performance is going to be, but of course I am going to go out there and perform. I always am at my best.

“On May 4th I am going to go out there, be ready and hopefully he is ready too. This is the longest I have trained for any fight, so it should be a great night.

“I am going to dish it out against Robert Guerrero on this one. I am going to be the Mayweather that is active. I have young guys who are really pushing me in the gym for this fight. Sure I have bad days in the gym, but I don’t have bad fight nights, bad paydays.

“Everything is going in camp like it should go. My Dad and me have an understanding that we all work as a team so that is going well because I need my whole team. My uncle Roger is coming along as far as his health, but one thing is for sure, that is my family and I love them. We can’t choose our family and as my mother said in the documentary [30 DAYS IN MAY], they gave me a hand and I am just playing the hand they gave me.

“I really wouldn’t be here without my team. My career is not just about the money like some people want to believe. My career is about my legacy. It’s also about living, loving and laughing and enjoying life.

“I go through ups and downs. It’s a roller coaster ride. I just keep on going and do the best I can, but I am strong and am going to continue to survive. Continue to go strong not just for the sport of boxing, but to entertain the people too.

“I am happy to be with SHOWTIME and CBS. This is the beginning of our relationship and for the next 30 months I plan to give you action-packed fights.

“I flew to Atlanta for the Final Four, flew to Miami to check my property, I am heading back to Las Vegas to train, then have to make a stop in Los Angeles.

“Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion about me and my career. I honestly don’t really care what you say. I love my fans, but I don’t live for anybody except myself and my family. I am comfortable with myself. If people are out there saying ‘I don’t like Floyd Mayweather and he is only about the money,’ I am pretty sure I have some of their pay-per-view money too.”

On Heroes and Young Fighters

“I looked up to a lot of people coming up. I looked up to different people: my father, my uncle Roger, a lot of other fighters who have come before me too like Muhammad Ali and even Mike Tyson. I looked up to a lot of people. I always wanted to be the first to do something, so I was always listening and learning the best I could.

“The person you meet now is the same person you are going to meet down the road. I don’t care what car I am driving or jewelry I am wearing. I stay who I am regardless of what you think I might be or who you think I am.

“People always say, ‘If I had this much money, I would do this or I would do that.’ Well those people don’t actually have the money or are not in my position. As Stephen Espinoza just said, you don’t stay at the top for as long as I have just because. I obviously have been doing something right.

“My mindset has always been to be the best. I would rather be known as a smart fighter. If you go back and look at my interviews from when I was young, I always said the less you get hit, the longer you are going to be able to stay in the game. Going to toe-to-toe just because you can say you did it is not cool to me.

“Sure I have done it in some of my fights, like the Miguel Cotto fight, but there is also a limit. I couldn’t have done that in all of my 43 fights. There is a limit.

“I say to the young fighters that some things just aren’t cool. They think taking a lot of punishment and going toe-to-toe in every fight is cool? That’s not cool. Or to be able to say they got locked up. That’s not cool either. I know I have mad mistakes but I can wake up every morning and say I have been honest admitting that.

“Also for the young fighters they should make sure they have a good team around them. People that are going to keep it real with you and can help you make the right decision. There are limits to everything you do. Even though I might seem edgier at times, I have limits too. I am older now and I understand it better. Things can come to a young good fighter so fast they can get caught up in a bad situation. I am going to continue to mentor the young, up-and-coming fighters. I will try to be the best mentor I can for some of these young fighters.

“For young people I say, work hard and dedicate yourself to your life. Be respectful to your parents, go to school because education is important and never compromise to be the best that you can be.

“I want to be able to get around and be sharp when my career is over. I want to be like Rafael Garcia who is here with me today. He’s almost 90 years old, hanging with us, still jogging, driving, and wearing sunglasses. I want to be like that when I am older. I want to be able to hang out with my grandkids and be the patriarch of my family.”

On Training and Music

“If I was to identify with a rapper I would probably have to say Tupac. Just with everything that has happened in my career and what he rapped about and his own life struggles, I would have to say.

“As far as listening to music, I am older now and I am an R&B man. I got a lot of nice cars and when I am driving around in a nice Rolls Royce taking Ms. Jackson out to eat, I’m not trying to be bumpin’ some wild music. Even in the gym or when I run with cars following me with the music, I tell them to give me some old school music, all old school.”

LEO SANTA CRUZ VS. ALEXANDER MUNOZ & J’LEON LOVE VS. GABRIEL ROSADO COMPLETE “MAY DAY: MAYWEATHER VS. GUERRERO” SHOWTIME PPV® TELECAST

leo-santa-cruz
LAS VEGAS (April 2, 2012) – The Saturday, May 4 “MAY DAY: Mayweather vs. Guerrero” SHOWTIME PPV telecast fight line-up is complete with the addition of former IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz facing veteran Alexander Munoz in a 10-round junior featherweight fight and rising middleweight star J’Leon Love squaring off against recent world title challenger Gabriel Rosado in a 10-round battle. These bouts, in addition to the already announced Daniel Ponce de Leon vs. Abner Mares 12-round title fight for Ponce de Leon’s WBC Featherweight World Championship, will set the stage for the world title clash between Eight-Time and Five Division World Champion Floyd Mayweather and Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

“I’m so excited to be fighting on this card on such the big Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend,” said Santa Cruz. “I have been very fortunate to have fought on great events so far in my career, but this is the biggest stage yet. I plan to make my fans happy on May 4 and show the world that I am here to stay.”

“I am so looking forward to getting back in the ring on May 4 and taking the young Leo Santa Cruz to school,” said Munoz. “My experience is going to trump his youth and I plan on handing him his first loss in front of the world on SHOWTIME PPV.”

“This is what every fighter dreams of,” said Love. “Thanks to Floyd Mayweather, Leonard Ellerbe and Mayweather Promotions I have been blessed with the opportunity to fight on SHOWTIME PPV in front of the whole world and on the undercard of one of the greatest fighters to ever lace up a pair of gloves [Floyd Mayweather]. Gabriel Rosado is a big name in the sport and a very good fighter, but on May 4, I plan on making a big statement by beating him and letting the entire world know my name. This is it and I can’t wait.”

“I have had my ups and downs, but I am confident that May 4 is going to be my time to shine,” said Rosado. “J’Leon Love is a tough, good fighter who has learned from some of the best, but I know what I am capable of. I am going to come out on top and show boxing fans across the country and around the world what I am made of.”

“Both of these fights are excellent additions to ‘MAY DAY: Mayweather vs. Guerrero’ and we are especially excited to see J’Leon Love make his SHOWTIME PPV debut,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “Fighting on a Floyd Mayweather undercard presents a platform unlike any other in the sport of boxing and we know that these rising stars will take full advantage of the opportunity.”

“Santa Cruz vs. Munoz and Love vs. Rosado add even more incentive for fans to buy this SHOWTIME PPV extravaganza,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “We could not be more impressed or happy with the path that Leo Santa Cruz is on and can’t wait for his skills to be tested further against Munoz in front of a worldwide audience on May 4. J’Leon Love has his toughest test to date when he faces Gabriel Rosado. I can’t think of a better way to kick-off this exciting night.”

Boxing’s latest action hero, 24-year-old Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz (23-0-1, 13 KO’s) broke onto the international boxing scene in 2012 when he won the IBF Bantamweight World Champion with a 12 round decision win over Vusi Malinga last June. Following that, the punch-a-second native of Huetamo, Mexico went on to defend his belt three times in 2012 with exciting victories over Eric Morel (TKO 5) in September, Victor Zaleta (TKO 9) in November and Alberto Guevara (W 12) in December, establishing himself as a future star. Now making his home in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz returns to the site of his big win over Morel in the hopes of keeping his unbeaten record intact.

Venezuelan veteran Alexander Munoz (36-4, 28 KO’s) lives up to his nickname of “El Explosivo” with each outing thanks to the devastating punching power that has garnered 19 knockout wins in three rounds or less. A rugged competitor who has never been stopped, the 34-year-old from San Felix has won eight of his last 10 bouts, with his only losses coming against World Champions Cristian Mijares and Koki Kameda. On May 4, Munoz will look hand Santa Cruz his first defeat with the entire world watching.

With the talent he exhibits each time he steps between the ropes, Detroit, Michigan’s J’Leon Love (15-0, 8 KO’s) may very well be the future of the middleweight division. Just 25-years-old, Love has been very impressive in the 160-pound division, most recently stepping up to the test against 28-fight veteran Derrick Findley with a near shutout decision on February 23 in front of his hometown crowd in Detroit. On May 4, he hopes to take another step forward on his trek toward a world title shot by defeating the very tough Gabriel Rosado.

No nonsense Gabriel “King” Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) epitomizes the relentless attitude of a Philadelphia fighter and, after a rocky start to his pro career, the 27-year-old has run off wins in seven of his last eight bouts, including knockout victories over Jesus Soto Karass, Sechew Powell and Charles Whittaker. In January, he gave a courageous effort in a WBA Middleweight World title bout against Gennady Golovkin before being stopped in the seventh round. Now, his comeback begins in Las Vegas on May 4.

VIDEO: EXCLUSIVE DOCUMENTARY FILM “30 DAYS IN MAY” REVEALS INTIMATE & THOUGHTFUL PORTRAIT OF BOXING SUPERSTAR FLOYD MAYWEATHER DURING HIS “LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE”

Joint Statement from Team Guerrero, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions

LOS ANGELES (March 28) – Early this morning Six-Time and Four Division World Champion Robert Guerrero was checking in his luggage at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, bound for Las Vegas, and, as he was doing so, made sure to advise the authorities that they needed to be aware that he had a firearm, which was unloaded and in a locked safe box with his luggage to be checked. Guerrero was carrying no ammunition and was within his legal right to possess such firearm in the state in which he resides. He was then arrested. At an arraignment held before the New York State Supreme Court for Queens County, the court, after hearing the pertinent facts of the case, released Guerrero on his own recognizance. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for after Robert’s May 4 fight against Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

We are very pleased Robert Guerrero was released on his own recognizance this afternoon in the wake of this incident and that he is on his way back to Las Vegas to continue training for his highly anticipated May 4 bout against Mayweather.

Now fighting out of Los Angeles, 28-year-old Francisco Vargas (15-0-1, 12 KO’s) represented his native Mexico in the 2008 Olympics, going 1-1 in the Olympic Games. Since turning pro in 2010, Vargas has built a reputation for having a versatile skill set and ring savvy. Last year, he turned up the heat fighting and winning six times with five of those wins coming by way of knockout. On January 26, Vargas kept his hot streak going with a second- round knockout win over Ira Terry in Las Vegas. He will be back in the boxing capital of the world this May to meet his toughest opponent to date in the unbeaten Aguiniga.

Long established as one of boxing’s top rising stars, Oxnard’s Jose Aguiniga (33-0, 15 KO’s) raced out to a 31-0 professional record and was on the verge of big things before surprisingly walking away from the sport after his 2007 win over Joe Morales. In 2011, there were rumblings of a comeback and in February of 2012, he returned with an eight-round unanimous decision win over Juan Ruiz. Three months later, Aguiniga added a seventh- round technical knockout victory against Eduardo Arcos and on May 3, he will look to return to continue his journey to the top of his division with a win over Vargas.

One of the most promising talents from the Olympic class of 2012, United States team member Errol Spence Jr. (4-0, 3 KO’s) has blasted through all of his opponents since turning professional last November, knocking out Jonathan Garcia, Richard Andrews and Nathan Butcher and scoring a shut-out decision win over Luis Torres in his last fight on March 2. On May 3, the DeSoto, Texas prospect will enter the ring looking to impress once again.

Fellow 2012 United States Olympian Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. (3-0, 1 KO) has also made a smooth transition to the world of professional boxing, winning all of his bouts since debuting last December with a unanimous decision win over Vicente Alfaro. In February, Diaz scored his first pro knockout at The Cosmopolitan, finishing Jose Ruiz in the second round. Then a month later, on March 16, he returned to the ring and looked strong in a six-round unanimous decision win over Mexico’s Alberto Cupido. On May 3 he is sure to wow the crowd at The Cosmopolitan once again.

A co-featured bout and a full undercard will be announced shortly. ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO, SHOWTIME’S STEPHEN ESPINOZA & DAVID ITSKOWITCH OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS: MEDIA BRUNCH QUOTES FROM NEW YORK CITY

guerrero206

NEW YORK (March 26, 2013) – It’s been a couple of hectic but satisfying and productive days for Robert Guerrero, who along with his wife, Casey, appeared on “The 700 Club” with Pat Robertson and Terry Meeuwsen on Monday in Virginia Beach, Va., met Robin Roberts on the set of “Good Morning America” in New York City on Tuesday and then later in the morning were joined by Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®, Stephen Espinoza for an “invite-only” media brunch at Vanderbilt Suites in The MetLife Building in Midtown Manhattan.

During Tuesday’s brunch, which was emceed by Golden Boy Promotions Chief Operating Officer, David Itskowitch, Guerrero, who turns 30 on Wednesday, was presented with a birthday cake.

Guerrero, a Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion, will challenge undefeated Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd Mayweather for the WBC Welterweight World Championship on Saturday, May 4, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The event, which will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV®, starts at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Below is what Guerrero, Espinoza and Itskowitch said Tuesday.

ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO

“I want to thank everyone involved, Golden Boy and SHOWTME especially. I’m excited for this fight. Man, I just can’t wait to get out there and fight Floyd Mayweather. I plan to shock the world.

“It’s funny because I’ve been talking to the media and telling them that I’m going to beat Floyd. Now, it’s time to get out there and do it. I’m ready. A lot of people think I’m crazy, but I think you’re crazy for thinking that I’m crazy. Just look at my wife. She asked the Lord to heal her and He did.

“When you believe, amazing things happen. I’m telling you all now that I am going to beat him. I believe God does things for a reason. I believe he put me here to humble Floyd Mayweather, and it is going to happen.’’

STEPHEN ESPINOZA

“We wanted to put this breakfast together partially to promote the fight, but anybody who knows anything about boxing knows that this is going to be a tough, tough fight. Anybody who says Mayweather is too fast, too strong and too good for Robert, well, they were saying that before Robert’s fight with (Andre) Berto too.

“We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert. Knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual. It will be an incredible event on May 4. Dave (Itskowitch) said this will be the toughest fight of Robert’s career. I think at the end of it, this will also be the toughest fight of Mayweather’s career.’’

DAVID ITSKOWITCH

“Robert Guerrero is an amazing fighter in the ring, but he is probably a more amazing person out of the ring. I know his story has been told a lot, but I don’t think it has been told enough.

“The first fight we worked with him was in 2007. We got a call the day before the fight’s final press conference with the horrifying news about Casey. I couldn’t believe when he walked into the room that he was going to fight a few days later. The fight happened. He blitzed Martin Honorio in less than a minute. I guess he wanted to get back home to Casey.

“When Casey’s condition got worse, he had a decision to make. He had to give up his title to take care of her. A lot of people questioned his decision, but it was the right thing to do. He’s now sitting in front of us facing the biggest fight of his career.’’

Undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s), an eight-time world champion in five divisions, remains boxing’s biggest attraction and the world’s highest paid athlete, wowing crowds each time he steps into the ring. During Mayweather’s extraordinary career, he has amassed wins over former world champions such as Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz and, most recently, then WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto, marking the 43rd win of his storied career.

The pride of Gilroy, Calif., Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is a six-time and four-division world champion who got the attention of the boxing world when he defeated former Two-Time World Champion Andre Berto in November 2012. Now the 29-year-old southpaw has the chance of a lifetime as he prepares to step into the ring with one of the sport’s all-time greatest fighters. With wins over former World Champions Joel Casamayor and Michael Katsidis and former world title challenger Vicente Escobedo, Guerrero is ready to shine on an international stage in this main event.

NCM Fathom Events, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions first teamed up in September of 2009 to bring the highly successful presentation of Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez fight to theaters, followed by Mayweather vs. Mosley Fight LIVE – Who R U Picking? in 2010 and Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz during Mexican Independence Day weekend in 2011. In May 2012, Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto drew a record-breaking number of viewers for Mayweather’s 43rd career win.

“Floyd Mayweather’s bouts against some of the best fighters in the world have consistently drawn enthusiastic audiences across the United States to their local movie theaters,” said Dan Diamond, senior vice president of NCM Fathom Events. “Ever since Mayweather first appeared on the big screen in 2009, it has just gotten more exciting with every fight, and this championship bout with Guerrero will be no exception.”

First visit will be on CBN’s “The 700 Club” where he and his wife Casey will talk about their incredible testimony with host Pat Robertson. Later in the evening “The Ghost” will make an appearance on TBN’s “Praise the Lord” show with Carman Licciardello, who’s an avid boxing fan.

9:00 A.M. – CBN’s 700 Club
7:00 P.M. – TBN’s “Praise The Lord” show with Carmen Licciardello
When Robert Guerrero started calling out Mayweather over a year ago, boxing fans and media thought he was dreaming. Now because of his incredible God given boxing ability and strong faith in Jesus Christ, Guerrero has willed and fought his way into the biggest fight of his life against Floyd Mayweather. In addition, his wife Casey miraculously found a bone marrow donor that saved her life, another miracle added to their testimony. Guerrero is this year’s “Ambassador of Hope” spokes person for BeTheMatch.org along with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America. His quest is to help register minorities into the national bone-marrow registry.

“I’m very excited that I’ll be able to use my platform in boxing to talk about my faith in Jesus Christ who has guided me to this incredible position. At the same time I’ll bring awareness to the bone-marrow registry. I want everyone to check out www.knockoutbloodcancer.org and join me in my quest to help save lives. On May 4th the world will see me dethrone Floyd Mayweather and everyone won’t understand what happened, except those who believe in the power of Christ. As the bible verse Philippians 4:13 states “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

“MAY DAY: Mayweather vs. Guerrero,” a 12-round fight for Mayweather’s WBC Welterweight World Championship, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T and Star Trek Into Darkness. I’m feeling extremely strong right now. I will have all my bases covered for this fight and I’m leaving no stone unturned. Mayweather, who recently announced a unique, groundbreaking revenue-sharing arrangement with Showtime Networks Inc. and its parent company, CBS Corporation, is excited to get back to business in his ring return against Guerrero.

“My new deal with Showtime and its parent CBS is very thrilling for me and a motivation to fight more often starting with my May 4 fight against Robert Guerrero,” said Mayweather. “I know Guerrero has been campaigning to fight me for quite a while now and I am happy to give him his opportunity. His name is mentioned among the other great champions in boxing today and that means he has proven himself in the ring. He will now have to prove himself against me, which is a whole other story. I’m excited for the challenge and fully expect a good, tough fight from him. However, I do expect the same outcome for him as all of the others who have challenged me before…42 have tried, 42 have failed. He will be number 43.”

Guerrero, coming off of a sensational win against Andre Berto on November 24, 2012, further entrenching himself as a formidable and tested world champion, has called out Mayweather for over two years. He will now have the opportunity to dethrone the undefeated pound for pound king when they meet May 4.

“First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the opportunities he has blessed me and my family with, said Guerrero. “All of the trials and tribulations that have occurred in my life have made me a better person as well as a better fighter and the results are undeniable. Nothing has ever come easy to me and that mental fortitude has prepared me to defeat the one fighter everyone perceives to be the pound for pound king in Floyd Mayweather. When we lock eyes across the ring on fight night he’s going to feel the presence of a man preordained for greatness. The time is now to show the world why I’m destined to dethrone Floyd and when I come out victorious on May 4th, the whole world will know I’m a man who willed his way to victory by putting God first in his life.”

“Floyd is a superstar in boxing and his record-breaking deal with Showtime and its parent CBS reinforces his role in the sport as the face and driving force behind boxing today,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO, Mayweather Promotions. “Robert Guerrero deserves this opportunity and I commend him for stepping up and feeling so confident against someone as talented as Floyd, but its Floyd’s night to return to the ring on this Cinco de Mayo boxing weekend and give fans another performance that makes him the champion he is today. Boxing and sports fans are in for the thrill of a lifetime on May 4 with such a great night of boxing talent and competition on display. There is so much to look forward to that evening.”

“I am extremely proud to help bring fight fans these match-ups with Mayweather vs. Guerrero and Ponce de Leon vs. Mares that feature amazing champions who perform at the highest level every time they step in the ring” said Richard Schaefer, CEO, Golden Boy Promotions. “The return of Floyd Mayweather is always exciting and Robert Guerrero, who has aggressively campaigned for this bout for over two years, will be in the fight of his life now that his dream has come true. Ponce de Leon vs. Mares is a highly competitive bout featuring two worthy champions that could stand on its own as a main event. This will be a great night of boxing on another tremendous Cinco de Mayo weekend and I expect the fans in the arena and the pay-per-view audience will enjoy and appreciate these championship mega-bouts in one night on what will be the biggest weekend for boxing this year.”

“Not only is Floyd Mayweather the undisputed number one draw in boxing, he is far and away the number one draw in all of pay-per-view,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “The fact that for his first fight under our new agreement, Floyd selected Robert Guerrero, a dangerous and talented fighter in the prime of his career, as his opponent, shows Floyd’s willingness to challenge himself and his strong commitment to staging the biggest and most exciting events in the sport. SHOWTIME PPV has a long history of staging many of the most significant pay-per-view events in history featuring boxing legends Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Julio Cesar Chavez. We are thrilled to add Floyd Mayweather to this amazing list.”

“Hosting Floyd Mayweather’s return to MGM Grand is a great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo weekend,” said Richard Sturm, president of Sports and Entertainment for MGM Resorts International. “We look forward to the championship fight in May and know both Mayweather and Robert Guerrero are true champions who will certainly bring an electric atmosphere to the fans inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena and those watching on Showtime PPV.”

“I will get into the ring with a warrior’s mentality and in a very positive frame of mind to assure that we have a great fight and obviously for me to come out victorious,” said Daniel Ponce de Leon. “This fight is very important for my career and I have every intention of staying the WBC Featherweight World Champion for a long time because even though I’m 32 years old, I feel like I’m 20 years old.”

“First of all I’d like to thank Ponce de Leon for giving me the opportunity to fight for his world title,” said Mares, who will attempt to write another chapter for himself in the history books by winning a world title in a third weight division. “Because I don’t like to waste opportunities, I have every confidence that come May 4, I will be the new WBC Featherweight World Champion. My dream was to become a world champion and I did it, not once, but twice, and now I have the chance to become a world champion a third time in a third weight division. I can’t wait to get in the ring.”

Undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather, (43-0, 26 KO’s), an eight-time world champion in five divisions, remains boxing’s biggest attraction, wowing crowds and generating massive pay-per-view numbers each time he steps into the ring. During Mayweather’s already extraordinary career, he has amassed wins over world champions such as Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz and, most recently, then WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto, marking the 43rd win of his storied career. Over the course of his participation in pay-per-view events Mayweather has generated 9.6 million buys and $543 million in revenue. He averages more than 1 million pay-per-view buys per event which is the highest pay-per-view buy average of any boxer in history. Mayweather has appeared in the four biggest non-heavyweight pay-per-view events in the sport’s history, bringing boxing excellence and a tremendous amount of excitement to his worldwide fan-base each time he fights.

The pride of Gilroy, California, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is a Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion who got the attention of the boxing world when he defeated former Two-Time World Champion Andre Berto in November 2012 in thrilling fashion. The exciting 12-round unanimous decision further gave Guerrero the confidence to step up and face Mayweather. Now the 29-year-old southpaw has the chance of a lifetime as he prepares to step into the ring with one of the sport’s all-time greatest fighters. With wins over former World Champions Joel Casamayor and Michael Katsidis and former world title challenger Vicente Escobedo, Guerrero is ready to shine on an international stage in his pay-per-view main event debut. Not only a star in the ring, he is also an inspiring young man out of the ring who notably gave up his junior lightweight crown in early 2010 to care for his then ill wife, Casey who has since fully recovered from her battle with leukemia.

A 2000 Olympian, Cuauhtemoc Chihuahua, Mexico’s Daniel Ponce de Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) found even greater success as a professional, having won world titles in the junior featherweight and featherweight divisions while establishing himself as a popular knockout artist with fans around the globe. In 2005, he won the vacant WBO title at 122 pounds with a 12-round unanimous decision win over then unbeaten Sod Looknongyangtoy and then went on to defend his belt six times before losing it to Juan Manuel Lopez in 2008. Undeterred by the defeat, he went on to win seven straight before a controversial loss to current Lightweight World Champion Adrien Broner and a setback against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2011. Since those bouts, the 32-year-old southpaw is 3-0, including a September 2012 win over countryman and then WBC Featherweight World Champion Jhonny Gonzalez making him a two-time world champion. He will defend his new title for the first time against Mares this May.

One of the newest members of boxing’s pound-for-pound best list, Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) has proven himself the hard way since turning pro in 2005 after representing Mexico in the 2004 Olympics. In 2010, the Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico native, who now fights out of Hawaiian Gardens, California, began making his mark on the international boxing scene with a draw against Yonnhy Perez in 2010 and a win over Vic Darchinyan in 2011, setting the stage for him to win his first world title in 2011 when he defeated Joseph Agbeko for the IBF Bantamweight World Championship. After defending his title against Agbeko in a rematch later that year, Mares moved up to 122 pounds in 2012 and beat Eric Morel for the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight belt. In his most recent fight, the 27-year-old Mares made a major statement with his exciting win over WBA Bantamweight Super World Champion Anselmo Moreno last November. Now, he’s eager to show the boxing world how good he is once again on May 4 when he attempts to win his third world title in a third weight division.

Ponce De Leon – Mares to land on Mayweather – Guerrero PPV card

Daniel_Ponce De Leon
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon will defend his crown against Abner Mares as part of the Floyd Mayweatherf – Robert Guerrero card on May 4th in Las Vegas.

“We got it worked and both fighters are excited, we are excited,” Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com. “It’s a great platform for Abner and Ponce to be on. They will be on the biggest pay-per-view and it is on Cinco De Mayo weekend, which is big for them as Mexican stars.”

“Once it became known that Canelo was not going to be on card, Floyd called me himself and said, ‘Please go get the best fight you can for the card,’ and I discussed with him the possibility of Ponce and Mares, and he was excited about it. He said, ‘Go out and get it done,’ and that’s what I did,” Schaefer said.

“I had numerous conversations with (Mares and De Leon Manager) Frank (Espinoza) ,” Schaefer said. “I told him to look at some of the great fighters who had big fights — George Foreman, Oscar (De La Hoya), Manny Pacquiao, Floyd. Those cards all had young fighters gain tremendous exposure on their undercards. So I told him this was a great opportunity for his guys to be in high-profile card.

“He realized that and was excited about it and then couldn’t wait to talk to the fighters. He did a great job to look out for Ponce and Abner. Frank’s a smart guy, a great poker player. He knows the benefits of them being on this card, so what he did was he negotiated for more money. He did a good job.”

“We’re very excited about appearing on the May 4 card,” Espinoza told ESPN.com. “The addition of Abner and Ponce De Leon will make an explosive night for boxing fans all around the world. We know it’s big. There’s no question. To be showcasing both of their talents on a worldwide platform, to have worldwide media and fans from around the world seeing them, it’s just the greatest exposure for both of them, and they can’t wait.

“Being on Cinco De Mayo and you have two of the finest Mexican fighters, it’s perfect. People were already excited about this fight happening on April 20, and now it just adds more being on Cinco De Mayo.”

“We finalized the fight and it’s the kind of fight you know can be a fight of the year candidate because of how these two guys fight,” Schaefer said.

“THE GHOST” SPEAKS ON MAYWEATHER SHOWDOWN

Robert_Guerrero
February 21, 2013 – Four-Division and Six-Time World Champion, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), and pound for pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KOs) are finally going to step in the ring on May 4, 2013. The contracts were signed by both Guerrero and Mayweather after months of anticipation. Both fighters are perennial pound for pound champions and fans around the world can expect to see an action packed showdown. This mega-million dollar global event will be one the fans will remember for years.

Undefeated in his Hall of Fame career, Floyd Mayweather is no stranger when it comes to fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend. The Mexican-American holiday is one of Floyd’s favorite dates to do battle. His conquests against Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya generated huge PPV numbers, making Mayweather the highest paid athlete in the world. In 2007, Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya set the record for the most PPV buys in boxing history, which still stands today.

Mayweather who is at the apex of sports, is one of the most recognized face’s on the planet. Fighting Guerrero will present Mayweather with his most difficult challenge since his fight with Oscar De La Hoya, being that Robert is a decorated multiple world champion in his prime. Guerrero, like De La Hoya, is one of the most accomplished Mexican-American fighters of this generation.

Guerrero gained international recognition when he made the leap from Lightweight to Welterweight to win a world title. Guerrero joined an elite class of fighters who have jumped up two weight classes to win world championships which include Roberto Duran, Roy Jones Jr., and Sugar Shane Mosley. In addition, Guerrero became the third fighter in boxing history to win a world title at featherweight and welterweight, uniting with legend Henry Armstrong and future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao. Finally, Guerrero joined all-time great Oscar De La Hoya becoming the only Mexican-American fighters to win world titles across four divisions.

Leading up to his showdown with Mayweather, Guerrero defeated five Olympians in a row, winning multiple world championships along the way. Guerrero’s dominating victory against No. 1 contender Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KOs), a fighter who was the mandatory challenger to face Floyd for over three years, proved he’s one of the best fighters in the welterweight division. “The Ghost” followed that impressive feat with another spectacular performance, dominating former two-time welterweight world champion, Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KOs) in a “Fight of the Year” candidate. Guerrero’s performance against Berto also garnered him “Fighter of the Year” by some boxing pundits. Both wins came by wide 12-round unanimous decisions.

When asked about fighting Floyd Mayweather on the biggest stage in sports, Guerrero stated, “First I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all his blessings. Without him I am nothing. Next I want to give thanks to my team for all their hard work, dedication and loyalty. It’s been a long road with many trials and tribulations but we’ve stuck together though the fire.”

“Floyd Mayweather is a great fighter, one of the best to ever lace up the gloves, but on May 4th I’m going to end his reign as pound for pound king,” said Guerrero. “I believe God has put me in this incredible position for a reason. This is bigger than boxing. It’s about humbling a man everyone perceives is unbeatable. When I come out victorious on May 4th, everyone will know that if you put Jesus Christ first in your life, anything is possible.”

“I’m dedicating this fight to knocking out blood cancer with Be The Match. This organization saves lives by finding matching donors for patients who need a bone marrow transplant. My wife had leukemia and needed a marrow transplant — and she found her donor through Be The Match. Now she’s cancer free. I want to use my platform as a fighter to help Be The Match save even more lives by getting more people to join the Be The Match Registry like I did. You could be someone’s cure. Find out how at BeTheMatch.org.”

Will the seasoned veteran Mayweather be able to tame the young hungry lion Guerrero? Mayweather vs. Guerrero will be an epic battle of boxing’s best fighters facing off against one another. Get ready for the fight of the year in the ultimate David vs. Goliath super-fight.

Mayweather jumps to Showtime; fight with Guerrero

Floyd Mayweather
In a move that will change the television landscape in boxing, pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather has signed a lucrative deal with Showtime, this ending his 16 year relationship with HBO and will fight Robert Guerrero on May 4th according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Floyd has signed a record-breaking deal with Showtime PPV/CBS, and Floyd is ecstatic,” Leonard Ellerbe, one of Mayweather’s top advisers, told ESPN.com. “This historic deal reflects a global superstar who is head and shoulders above his peers. HBO, they made a great offer, but the Showtime PPV/CBS offer was substantially greater in every facet, from top to bottom.

“So bottom line, HBO was outgunned. They came to a gun fight with a knife. At the end of the day, it’s business. Floyd has had a fantastic relationship over the last (16) years with HBO but he’s moving on. He made the decision based on what was best for him and his family. Showtime/CBS really stepped up and made it crystal clear that they wanted Floyd Mayweather. This is a tremendous platform, and Floyd’s looking forward to putting his talents in front of a much larger worldwide audience.”

“The first fight is Guerrero, ‘The Ghost,’ the boogey man,” Ellerbe said. “Floyd’s going to line all these guys up and he’s going to whup their asses one by one.

“It was a very detailed process,” Showtime Sports head Stephen Espinoza told ESPN.com. “We put forth a very aggressive offer, and I know Floyd spent a lot of time with (adviser) Al Haymon poring over the details. Ultimately, I was able to bring a lot of the (Showtime and CBS) assets to the table, and with so many of our platforms stepping forward to support it, this was a deal he couldn’t refuse.

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer, who promotes Guerrero and has promoted all of Mayweather’s fights since 2007 on a fight-by-fight basis, told ESPN.com that the kickoff news conference for the fight, which hasn’t been scheduled yet, will be nationally televised on CBS on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when the network televises most of its sports fare.

“This will redefine the way boxing press conferences are done,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who has worked on Mayweather’s fights since 2007 said. “The traveling to different cities maybe was the most effective thing at a time when you had in each city a half dozen writers. Now it’s driven by different platforms and we are looking at putting together a press conference similar to the way you see a presidential debate — a moderator, a live audience and journalists can submit questions that will then be read and it will televised nationwide on CBS.

unior middleweight titleholder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs), the 22-year-old Mexican star and a big draw for the card on Cinco de Mayo weekend, is expected to fight on the undercard, possibly in a unification fight with Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KOs), who upset Miguel Cotto in a December title defense.

But Schaefer said that deal is not done.

“First we needed to get (Mayweather-Guerrero and the TV deal) done and now, within the next 24 or 48 hours, I am trying to see if in fact we can get a fight done between Canelo and Trout,” he said. “It is not done, it is not signed. There are other possibilities we are looking at for Canelo.

“But as I have said all along, we have every intention to have Canelo fight on this card. As for the matchup, that is my next task.”

“I think it’s a fantastic matchup. Robert is one tough competitor,” Schaefer said. “He hasn’t lost (since 2006) and that loss was to a fighter (Orlando Salido in a featherweight title fight) who tested positive for steroids after the fight (and the decision was changed to a no contest). He’s a multiple-weight world champion. He actively campaigned for this fight, and a lot of media people say he has earned the fight if you look at what he’s done in the last 12 months.

“He’s young, he’s been active, he’s coming off the biggest wins of his career and he showed he is a real welterweight against Berto and Aydin. This is a hell of a challenge for Floyd, and Robert as well. At 147, he is the most dangerous opponent Floyd could have picked, end of story.”

Said Ellerbe: “Guerrero thinks he’s a badass and come May 4, Floyd is going to show him why he is the top dog and why he’s been world champion for 15 years.”

“We made an aggressive and responsible pay-per-view offer,” HBO said in a statement given to ESPN.com. “Now we move on. We are focused on the best boxing franchise in the television business. We are proud of the roster of superstar fighters and emerging stars who are scheduled to appear on the multiple HBO television platforms this year.”

“Robert can box, he can punch, he has a chin,” Schaefer said. “He has a hell of a chance to win this fight. When you look at Floyd Mayweather, he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He’s the most skilled fighter out there, but at the same time he’s getting older and hasn’t fought for a year. Not fighting for a year when you are in your 20s is one thing, but in your 30s, fighting once a year is not the best setup.

“His body went through a grueling fight with Cotto, and he was in jail. Who knows what all that has done to him? There are a lot of interesting aspects which make this fight high-stakes.”
