NEWARK, N.J. (May 7, 2024) — Newark’s three-division king is ready to defend his crown on native turf.

Shakur Stevenson will make the inaugural defense of his WBC lightweight world championship against Armenian-born German Olympian Artem Harutyunyan on Saturday, July 6, at Prudential Center in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

In the co-feature, O’Shaquie Foster will defend his WBC junior lightweight world title against Brazilian Olympic gold medalist and three-time world title challenger Robson Conceição.

In the 10-round lightweight televised opener, Keyshawn Davis will take on Mexican veteran Miguel Madueño.

Stevenson-Harutyunyan, Foster-Conceição, and Davis-Madueño will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN, Deportes and ESPN+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) has won world titles in three weight classes during his seven-year run. After securing a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, he made his pro debut in 2017 and swiftly moved up the ranks. He captured his first world title by defeating Joet Gonzalez for the WBO featherweight strap in October 2019. Two years later, he stopped Jamel Herring in 10 rounds to earn the WBO title at 130 pounds. The 26-year-old southpaw unified world titles by handing then-WBC champion Oscar Valdez his first loss in April 2022. Stevenson then claimed two consecutive victories at Prudential Center by defeating Conceição that September and stopping Japanese contender Shuichiro Yoshino in six last April. Hee outpointed Dominican puncher Edwin De Los Santos last November to become the WBC lightweight world champion.

Stevenson said, “It feels good to be going back home to Newark, where they appreciate a young legend, and to make my first title defense at 135. On July 6, Down Goes Artem!”

Harutyunyan (12-1, 7 KOs) captured an Olympic bronze medal for Germany in 2016. He started his pro career the following year and went 12-0 in his adopted country with triumphs over Samuel Molina in September 2021 and Humberto Galindo in June 2022. Last July, he made his U.S. debut in a competitive showdown against Frank Martin. The 33-year-old had success with his aggression and right hand, though Martin rallied late to win a narrow unanimous decision. Harutyunyan will have his first world title shot against his second consecutive southpaw rival.

Harutyunyan said, “I respect Shakur Stevenson as a champion, but I’m coming to shock his hometown fans and win the WBC lightweight championship. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I will take full advantage of it. This will be my second fight in the U.S. I’ve learned and progressed since my loss to Frank Martin.”

Foster (22-2, 12 KOs) had a distinguished amateur career with more than 100 fights and an alternate spot in the 2012 U.S. Olympic team before entering the paid ranks later that year. He encountered two early-career setbacks, including a split decision defeat to Rolando Chinea in July 2016. He returned more than a year later with renowned trainer Bobby Benton and has since gone 12-0. Last February, he won the WBC world title with a points verdict over two-division world champion Rey Vargas before a dramatic 12th-round knockout win against Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez in October. The following month, Foster signed a long-term promotional deal with Top Rank. He returns after securing a well-earned split decision over Abraham Nova in February.

Foster said, “I’m excited to be back for my third title defense. Conceição is a great opponent who has been in the ring with a lot of top fighters, but come July 6, we will be ready. I will keep proving that I’m one of the best fighters in the world.”

Conceição (18-2-1, 9 KOs), Brazil’s inaugural Olympic boxing gold medalist, turned pro in November 2016. His only losses have come against unbeaten world champions, including a close decision against then-WBC champ Valdez in September 2021. Following the setback to Stevenson, Conceição’s June 2022 showdown against Nicolas Polanco ended in a no contest. He followed up by challenging three-weight world champion Emanuel Navarrete last November, rising twice from the canvas and battling to a majority draw. In April, he registered a seventh-round TKO against Jose Guardado in April.

Conceição said, “I’m really looking forward to this fight against O’Shaquie Foster. This title is something I’ve been aiming for a long time, and I’m not going to let this opportunity slip away. I can guarantee that I’ll give my best; I’ll leave everything in the ring. Blood, sweat, and dedication—everything will be invested in this title bout. I’m ready to face any challenge that comes my way. Let’s go all in towards victory! Brazil!”

Davis (10-0, 7 KOs), from Norfolk, Virginia, made a quick transition from prospect to contender. After going 3-0 as a pro, he earned a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In November 2021, he inked a long-term promotional pact with Top Rank and has amassed seven wins since. In 2023, he stopped Anthony Yigit in nine rounds in April and vanquished Francesco Patera via 10-round decision in July. After his October win over Nahir Albright was overturned to a no contest due to a positive marijuana test, Davis returned with renewed vigor in February to dispatch former two-weight world champion Jose Pedraza in six. Madueño (31-2, 28 KOs) tallied a three-fight winning spree after a decision defeat to Jezreel Corrales in March 2022. The streak was halted by a points setback against Canadian contender Steve Claggett last November, but he bounced back quickly by decisioning Justin Pauldo in February.

Davis said, “Madueño is a tough fighter with more than 30 pro fights, and I have a lot of respect for what he brings to the table. I love fighting in Newark. The fans there are special, and I am going to feed off their energy and put on a show.”

Undercard action — streaming live and exclusively on ESPN+ — includes the return of 20-year-old lightweight prodigy Abdullah Mason and unbeaten heavyweight prospect Damian “Polish Hussar” Knyba.

Mason (13-0, 11 KOs) will make his third 2024 appearance in an eight-rounder against Puerto Rican veteran Luis Lebron. The Cleveland native went 5-0 with four knockouts last year before stopping Benjamin Gurment in two in February. He is coming off a fourth-round TKO win over Ronal Ron in April. Lebron (20-5-1, 13 KOs) has given stiff tests to Duke Ragan and Henry Lebron and stopped Giovanni Gutierrez in February.  

Knyba (13-0, 7 KOs), a 6-foot-7 behemoth with an 86-inch reach, returns in an eight-rounder versus Richard Lartey (16-6, 13 KOs). He joined the Top Rank stable in January 2023 and scored a TKO win over Curtis Harper that April followed by decisions over Helaman Olguin in June and Michael Coffie in December.

Steve Claggett won a 10-round unanimous decison over Miguel Madueno in a junior welterweight at Casino Montreal in Montreal, Canada.

Claggett, 139.8 lbs of Calgary, CAN won by scores of 99-91 twice and 98-92 and is now 37-7-2. Madueno, 139.6 lbs of Orange, CA is 30-2.

Steven Butler stopped Ivan Alvarez in round nine of their 10-round middleweight bout.

In round nine, Butler landed a big right hand that hurt Alvarez. Butler followed up with a flurry that put Alvarez down in the corner. Later in the round Butler sent Alvarez down with a straight right hand. Alvarez got to his feet, but the fight was waved off at 2:36.

Butler, 161.9 lbs of Montreal, CAN is 33-4-1 with 27 knockouts. Alvarez, 160.9 lbs of Mexicali, MEX is 32-15-4.

Imam Khataev stopped Fernando Galvan in round two of their eight-round light heavyweight bout.

In round one, Khataev dropped Galvan with a one-two. In round two, it was a right hand that put Galvan down and the fight was stopped at 44 seconds.

Khataev, 178.6 lbs of Sydney, AUS is 5-0 with five knockout. Galvan, 179.4 lbs of Mexico is 8-9-1.

Mehmet Unal stopped Jaime Lopez after round two of their eight-round light heavyweight bout.

In round one, Unal dropped Lopez with a left hand. Unal dominated the bout and the fight was stopped in the corner due to injury.

Unal is now 7-0 with six knockouts. Lopez is 10-11.

Wikens Mathieu remained undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over Gregorz Mardyla in a super middleweight.

Mathieu, 169.5 lbs of Quebec, CAN won by scores of 60-54 on all cards and is now 5-0. Mardyla, 168.6 lbs of Krackow, POL is 1-1-1.

Moreno Fendero stopped Cristian Lozano in round two of their four-round middleweight bout.

Fendero dropped Lozano at the end of the first round. In round two, Lozano began to bleed from his nose. The fight was stopped when Fendero landed a hard combination at 1″05.

Fendero, 163.6 lbs of Chartres, FRA is 2-0 with one knockout, Lozano, 160.9 lbs of San Pedro, MEX is 2-3.

PLANT CITY, FL (November 3, 2022) – Thompson Boxing’s lightweight Miguel Madueño (27-1, 25 KOs), is looking to bounce back from the first loss of his career when he faces Juan Huertas (16-3-1, 12 KOs), on Friday, November 4th, at the Whitesands Events Center in Plant City, Florida. The 10-round bout will broadcast worldwide on ProBoxTV.com with the WBO Latino Championship on the line.

“I have had a great camp and made major improvements since my first career loss,” said the power-puncher Madueño, who has an 89% KO ratio as a pro. “In my last fight I didn’t feel like myself, but now I am ready to bring the old ‘Explosivo’ back. I will knock this guy out and put the division on notice.”

In Madueño’s last fight, he lost a twelve-round decision to former world champion Jezreel Corrales, in March of this year. Since that fight, Madueño has not missed a day in the gym and has used the loss as motivation. 

“I wanted to be a world champion so bad and put a lot of pressure on myself to perform in my last fight,” said Madueño reflecting on his fight that had implications for a future world title shot. “I know now what I need to do, and how not to beat myself. I put myself in a position that made my last fight much harder.” 

Huertas recently upset undefeated Jonhatan Cardoso in June of this year and is hoping for a similar result on Friday, but Madueño doesn’t see it happening. 

“He is in a lot of trouble,” stated Madueño. “He has been knocked out twice, and I don’t see a way he can take my power at all. I am one of the hardest punchers in the division – when I hit him, he will fall, and he isn’t getting back up.”

“El Olimpico” Huertas (16-3-1, 12 KOs) from Panama City, Panama, represented Panama in the 2012 Olympics and made his professional debut on May 15, 2013.  In his last two fights, following a two-year pandemic forced hiatus, he won both via first-round stoppage. His most recent win, on June 17 in Panama City, he beat Jonhatan Cardoso to win the WBO Latino Lightweight title.  Huertas is a former WBA Fedecentro Super Featherweight Champion, winning that in only his seventh professional fight.  He is also a former WBA Fedalatin Super Featherweight champion.

“Explosivo” Madueno (27-1, 25 KOs) is from Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, now residing in Orange County, California. The twenty-three-year-old made his professional debut on January 27, 2017 and his September 9 fight against Huertas will be his first title fight of any kind.  His last fight was the first and only loss of his professional career. His fourth professional fight was his only other fight that went the distance.

PANAMA (March 14, 2022) – This past Saturday, lightweight contender, Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueño (27-1, 25 KOs), suffered his first loss as a professional, losing a unanimous decision to former world champion, Jezzrel Corrales (26-4, 10 KOs), in WBA lightweight title elimination bout.

In what was considered an ugly bout, both fighters were deducted a point in round three for dirty fighting. Corrales was deducted two additional points, one in round one and another in round eight. Madueño did his best to apply pressure and cut off the ring against the slick style that Corrales was displaying but was flustered with the movement. Scorecards read 117-108, 115-109 and 116-108, all in favor of Corrales.

After the lost, Madueño feels he has a lot of things to work on and vows to be back stronger than ever.

“It wasn’t my night and I’m going to go back to the gym and work on all the things I know I can improve on,” said Madueño, who is promoted by Thompson Boxing. “Corrales was fighting dirty, so I had to retaliate with some dirty tactics of my own. It wasn’t my best performance by far, but I’ll be back with an improved version of myself. This is just a minor setback”

ONTARIO, CA (October 23, 2021) – Last night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA, Thompson Boxing Promotions hosted their “New Blood” event with fans in attendance, a first since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the 8-round main event, lightweight slugger, Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueño (26-0, 24 KOs), defeated Jose Luis Rodriguez (25-15-1, 13 KOs), stopping him in the fifth round with a barrage of hooks to the head and body. The stoppage came after Madueño dropped him earlier in the round with the same type of punch combo. The referee ended the fight at the 2:46 mark of round five.

“I wanted to send a message to the rest of the lightweight division by stopping Rodriguez,” said Madueño. “He’s only been knocked out by a few guys, so it was very satisfying to get the victory by pounding him out of there. I’m grateful to my promoter Thompson Boxing for keeping me busy throughout this pandemic. When my name is called to fight for a world title, I’ll be more than ready, my time is coming.”

In the 8-round co-main event, two undefeated super bantamweight prospects collided, as Katsuma Akitsugi (7-0, 1 KO) and Eros Correa (10-1, 7 KOs), went to war, with Akitsugi wining a majority decision. In the early rounds, Correa was landing his over hand right, while Akitsugi was applying pressure. After an even first half of the fight, it was Akitsugi who made the adjustment, and flourished in the final rounds. Scorecards read 78-74 twice and 76-76.

“I knew Eros was going to be the toughest fight of my career, but I had confidence in myself that I would come out victorious,” stated Akitsugi. “This is the second undefeated fighter that I’ve defeated. I’m hoping with a few more fights, I’ll be able to get ranked or maybe fight for a regional title.”

In the second fight of the evening, Esteban Muñoz (5-1, 3 KOs), defeated Manuel Martinez (6-5-4, 3 KOs), by way of a first round knockout, in a super lightweight bout scheduled for 4-rounds. Muñoz landed a picture-perfect right hook to the midsection of Martinez’ body, sending him to the canvas. Martinez could not recover, and the bout was over at the 1:50 second of the opening round.

“I knew the fight was over when I landed that body shot,” said Esteban Muñoz. “There was a lot of power behind that punch and I was glad I got the knockout. I’m hoping I can get one more fight in by the end of the year, and finish 2021 off strong.”

In the opening 4-round super bantamweight bout, Lazaro Vargas of Coachella, Calif (4-0, 2 KO’s), defeated Ulises Rosales (0-5), of Tijuana MX, by way of a unanimous decision. Vargas was the aggressor throughout the fight as he landed a lot of power shots to the head and body. To Rosales credit, he withstood the pressure that Vargas was applying and held on to make it to the final bell in a spirited effort. Scorecards read 40-36 across the board.

“I’m happy that I got the win, and my opponent took a lot of punishment,” said Vargas. “I was hitting him with a lot of big shots, and he hung in there, so I give him a lot of respect for being a warrior. I got some good rounds in and now it’s back to the drawing board as I know I must improve in some areas of my game. I’m still learning and I’m getting better with each fight.”

The 22-year-old Madueño, who hails from Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, is coming off his most impressive victory, a tenth round TKO against Sonny Fredrickson (21-5, 14 KOs). HOLLYWOOD, FL (September 15, 2021) – Last night, Thompson Boxing’s unbeaten super lightweight knockout artist, Miguel “El Explosivo” Madueño (25-0, 23 KOs, entertained fans with a tenth round TKO over the always tough Sonny Fredrickson (21-4, 14 KOs). The ten round bout was part of TrillerVerz II at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, streamed worldwide on FITE.TV.

Madueño, who came out aggressive since the bell went off, put forth a sequence of action-packed rounds that made the experienced Fredrickson rethink his strategy. After some back and forth rounds Madueño lived up to his nickname and was able to get the stoppage in the tenth and final round at the 2:04 mark. With the win, Madueño is calling out everyone at lightweight.

“I want to thank everyone who believes in me and all the fans who enjoyed my fight,” said Madueño after the win. “This was the type of victory I needed to make a statement and get closer towards a world title. Moving forward, I’ll be campaigning at lightweight and I want to fight all the big names in that division, I don’t care who it is. No one will be able to handle my power. I’ll dominate anyone they put in front of me.”

“I gave it my all, I am disappointed, but this is not the end for me, or my team,” said Dutchover. “I have no excuses, I felt great, it just wasn’t my night.”

Danielito Zorilla stopped Pablo Cesar Cano in round two of a scheduled junior welterweight bout at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida

After a feeling out round one, Zorrilla landed a liver shot followed by an overhand right behind the ear for a combination that rocked Cano, who was unable to recover, earning Zorrilla the WBO NABO Junior Welterweight Championship.

Albright Stops Dutchover in 6

Nahir Albright (13-1) vs. Michael Dutchover (15-1) met in a super lightweight bout. Albright knocked Dutchover down once in the first round, once in the second and continued to control the action with his jab. Dutchover was knocked down again the third.

Dutchover’s face was bloodied in the fourth as Albright stepped up his output.  Albright landed a vicious combination at the end of the sixth that knocked Dutchover down for a three count. The doctor stopped the action at 2:59 for the TKO victory for Albright.

Madueno stops Frederickson

Undefeated Miguel Madueno (24-0) took on a very game Sonny Frederickson (21-4) in a super lightweight contest. Madueno controlled most of the action for the first four rounds, but by round five Frederickson found his rhythm and went from strictly countering to pressing the action.

In round six, Frederickson landed a few heavy bows to the head and body. Madueno was then penalized a point for holding. After more heavy trading on the inside in the seventh and eighth rounds, Madueno landed big shots and took control in the ninth, but Frederickson held on to make it into the final round.

 Round ten saw an explosion in output and power from Madueno who had Frederickson dazed and wobbly enough for referee Sam Burgos to call a halt to the action at the  2:04 mark.

Gonzalez stops Karpency

Cruiserweight and Miami hometown favorite Yuniesky Gonzalez (20-3) took only  35 punches and one and a half rounds to end Tommy Karpency’s (30-7-1)  night with a beautifully placed body shot.  González continues to show power and promise  in his comeback run.

Miami’s undefeated Bryce Henry (4-0), super welterweight, dominated Juan De Angel and stopped him in the fourth round with a right uppercut/ left hook combination.

Dutchover, of Midland, Texas, has a record of 14-1 with 10 knockouts. The 23- year-old turned professional five years ago.

Dutchover, known as the “West Texas Warrior,” has wins over Miguel Cariozza (10-1); Ricardo Lopez (7-1-2); Bergman Aguilar (14-3-1); Rosekie Cristobal (15-3), and his last bout when he won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jorge Marron (18-1) on July 26th in Orange, California.

“In December I was supposed to fight, but I had an injury, and things happen for a reason. I am back in California training and am excited to get back in the ring. Gutierrez has stopped his last six opponents and is coming off a first-round stoppage of 35-fight veteran Jesus Alberto Torres Martinez on September 7, 2019 Naucalpan, Mexico.

Seeing action in an 8-round bout will be undefeated lightweight, Miguel Madueno.

Madueno, 22-years-old from Orange, California, has an impressive record of 22-0 with 20 knockouts.

Madueno is a four-year professional who has shot up the prospect rankings with wins over Cristian Flores (7-1-2); Jesus Rendon (13-1-1); former world-title challenger Cosme Rivera; and his last bout when Madueno stopped Jesus Quintero Velarde in two rounds on December 18th in Sonora, Mexico.

Opening up the broadcast will see Jamshidbek Najmitdinov take part in an 8-round junior welterweight fight.

Najmitdinov, of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, has a record of 16-1 with 13 knockouts.

Najmitdinov is an eight-year professional who will be making his American debut.

Najmitdinov has been in several all-action fights, with a style that will appeal to the American audience. The only blemish on his record was a very disputed decision loss to former world champion Viktor Postol. That bout saw Najmitdinov go into the home country of Postol in the Ukraine, and Jamshidbek dropped Postol on two occasions and rocked him several other times during the fight, yet fell short on the judges’ scorecards.

Najmitdinov is coming off a first-round stoppage over Giorgi Khutsishvili on October 6, 2019 to win the WBC CIS Title.
