More fight than farce as Mayweather stops McGregor

LAS VEGAS – In the end, only the spectacle was memorable. The fight was forgettable. Yet in the end, it was indeed a fight instead of the mere farce predicted by so many.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. won it and with the stoppage he promised Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in a pay-per-view event expected to set records.

But there was also a victory wrapped in the defeat for Conor McGregor, who was still upright at the time of the 10round TKO and proud as ever after the MMA star’s first professional boxing match against this generation’s best at the more traditional sweet science.

McGregor surprised the boxing pursuits.

Seemed to surprise, Mayweather, too.

He threw jabs nobody had ever seen or even suspected he had. He had Mayweather in retreat fighting off his back foot. In the opening rounds, Mayweather looked exactly like the 40-year-old man who had not answered an opening bell in a couple of years. After six rounds, it looked like an even fight.

But McGregor’s unfamiliarity with boxing became increasingly evident. By the fourth round, there was awkward pawing with his jab. His hands began to drop. All the while, Mayweather’s muscle memory began to exert itself and take control of the junior-middleweight bout.

His found his timing. He rediscovered his sense of range. Then, his right hand began to land, land and land. Suddenly, there was swelling around McGregor’s eyes. In those Irish eyes, there were mounting signs of fatigue.

The end was near, a historical one for what Mayweather vowed was his last fight. In Nevada Athletic Commission-sanctioned bout, Mayweather went 50-0, supassing Rocky Marciano’s milestone.

“Boxing’s reputation was on the line,’’ Mayweather said.

Mayweather’s legacy was, too. He protected that and managed to add a reported $200,000 to his bank account.

“”Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch,’’ said Mayweather, who ended with it fusillade of right hands that left McGregor holding on and finished at 1:05 of the 10th. “We know in MMA he fights for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, he started to slow down. I guaranteed to everybody that this wouldn’t go the distance.’’

McGregor wished that it had. Referee Robert Byrd, he said, should have let it go on, all the way through the 12th and final round and on to the scorecards.

“Where was the final two rounds?’’ said McGregor, who collected a $100 million guarantee. “Let me walk back to my corner and compose myself.”

He’ll have plenty of time to do that. His $100-million guarantee is worth a lot of composure.

Gervonta Davis gets only boos in victory

Gervonta Davis lost his title on the scale. He lost respect in the ring.

Davis won the fight, but not much else in an eighth-round TKO of Francisco Fonseca Saturday in the final fight before the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather Jr pay-per-view spectacle Saturday night at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
Davis, who was two pounds heavier than the 130-pound mandatory Friday  for a defense of the International Boxing Federation’s title, dropped Fonseca with a punch to the back of the head at 39 seconds of the eighth.
“An illegal punch,” said Fonseca (19-1-1, 13 KOs), a Costa Rica who went to the canvas and stayed there on has hands and knees for several long moments.
Davis 19-0, 18 KOs), a Mayweather promoted fighter from Baltimore, denied there was anything illegal about the blows. He mocked Fonseca in the end by mimicking him, but resting his hands and knees onto the canvas in the same beaten posture. When he stood up, the crowd erupted in boos, which was the only thing he earned.

Jack scores TKO for light-heavyweight title

Things changed quickly for Badou Jack. He made sure of it.

Rocked early, Jack (21-1-3, 14 KOs) recovered quickly and definitively, winning the World Boxing Association’s light-heavyweight title with a fifth-round TKO Saturday of Nathan Cleverly (30-4, 16 KOs).
Jack, a Swedish fighter training in Las Vegas, won his piece of the world title by establishing a quick, precise jab after Cleverly, of Wales, aggressively went after him in the opening two rounds of a pay-per-view bout on the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayeather Jr. card at Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena.
By the fourth, Jack was in control. By the fifth, Cleverly was slumping on the ropes and finished at 2:17 of the round.

Tabiti wins unanimous decision over Cunningham

Andrew Tabiti’s fast hands initiated a head-to-body attack that the Las Vegas cruiserweight sustained throughout 10 rounds for a unanimous decision over Steve Cunningham of Philadelphia for a minor title Saturday night at Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena.

Tabiti (16-0, 13 KOs) was quicker on his feet and quicker to punch through the a 97-93, 100-90, 97-93 scorecard victory over Cunningham (29-9-1, 13 KOs)in the first pay-per-view bout on the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather Jr. card.

Yordenis Ugas, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist from Cuba, scored two knockdowns and got up from one for unanimous decision over Puerto Rican Thomas Dulorme (24-3, 16 KOs) in a terrific, 10-round welterweight fight Saturday in the final bout before the pay-per-view portion of the Mayweather-McGregor card at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Ugas looked as if he would overwhelm Dulorme early. He dropped him twice in the second round. Dulorme returned the favor in the seventh, yet wasn’t able to capitalize with the second knockdown he would have needed for the win.
In the card’s third bout, Las Vegas welterweight Juan Heraldez (13-0, 8 KOs) relied superior strength and a disciplined defense, winning a unanimous decision over Mexican Jose Borrego (12-1, 11 KOs), who had had enough power to score a knockdown in the 10th, yet failed to do much through the other nine rounds..

Everybody might be talking about Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Conor McGregor, but nobody was there when the hyped event began.

The show opened to an empty room Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

There were only a couple of fighters and lots of echoes about three hours before Showtime’s pay-per-view card was scheduled to begin.

London super-middleweight Savannah Marshall (1-0) and Sydney LeBlanc of Lafayette, LA, created the first echoes. Most of them came from Marshall’s punches. She landed one after another, scoring a unanimous decision over LeBlanc (4-4-1).

In the card’s second fight, Fresno super-middleweight Antonio Hernandez (10-1, 2 KOs) was stronger and busier, scoring often enough for unanimous decision over Kevin Newman (7-1-1, 3 KOs) of Las Vegas.

TWO WORLD TITLE FIGHTS INCLUDING AMERICA’S YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION GERVONTA DAVIS FACING FRANCISCO FONSECA ANNOUNCED FOR MAYWEATHER vs. McGREGOR SHOWTIME PPV® UNDERCARD

LAS VEGAS (August 10, 2017) – Two world championship fights including a title defense by America’s youngest world champion are part of the trio of high stakes matchups on the Mayweather vs. McGregor SHOWTIME PPV undercard on Saturday, Aug. 26 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and presented by Mayweather Promotions.

The four-fight SHOWTIME PPV event, beginning live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, is headlined by the unprecedented super welterweight matchup between boxing’s undefeated all-time great Floyd Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor. In the co-featured bout, undefeated rising star Gervonta “Tank” Davis will make the second defense of his IBF Junior Lightweight World Championship against undefeated challenger Francisco Fonseca as the 22-year-old looks to continue his reign as the youngest current champion from the U.S.

WBA Light Heavyweight Titlist Nathan Cleverly will defend his title against former 168-pound world champion Badou Jack “The Ripper”, who is stepping up in weight and into this world title tilt.

The pay-per-view telecast will open with undefeated rising cruiserweight contender Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti taking ontwo-time world champion Steve “U.S.S.” Cunningham in a 10-round bout for the USBA cruiserweight title.

“What a night this will be for fight fans,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “Not only will they witness a first of its kind main event, but they will also see two incredible world title fights, as Mayweather Promotions’ very own current and former world champions go head-to-head in separate bouts. Gervonta Davis is nothing short of pure boxing talent with dynamite power. Former super middleweight world champion Badou Jack is making his light heavyweight debut, and looking to take the title away from a tough and experienced Nathan Cleverly. But first, Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti will open the pay-per-view telecast with what I expect to be a magnificent performance. This diverse card is an epic, international affair stacked with talent. Make sure you don’t miss the biggest event the sport has ever seen.”

“This undercard includes three meaningful matches featuring fighters we’ve seen develop over the years on SHOWTIME,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Gervonta Davis has fast-tracked himself to stardom on this network, we’ve seen Badou Jack develop from prospect to champion, and we’re now witnessing similar growth with Andrew Tabiti. We’re excited to watch them compete in tough, competitive matchups on this global stage.”
Gervonta Davis vs. Francisco Fonseca – IBF Junior Lightweight World Championship

One of the fastest-rising young stars in the sport, Davis (18-0, 17 KOs) became the youngest reigning champion from the U.S. when he knocked out Jose Pedraza in January to capture the IBF 130-pound crown. The 22-year-old made his first title defense in style when he went to London and stopped Liam Walsh in May. Both bouts aired live on SHOWTIME. Representing Baltimore, Davis won the 2012 National Golden Gloves championship and scored knockouts in his first eight fights after turning pro in 2013. He enters this matchup on a streak of nine-straight fights that have ended with a knockout victory.

“I’m really excited to fight as the co-main event on the biggest card in combat sports history,” said Davis. “I plan to put on a great show for everyone in attendance in Las Vegas and for those who purchase the PPV. I want to thank my team for this incredible opportunity. I’m ready for Floyd Mayweather to pass his torch to me. To my fans, I appreciate all of you. Support me and I’ll fight for you!”

Fighting out of San Ramon, Costa Rica, Fonseca (19-0-1, 13 KOs) has won 19 straight fights after turning pro with a majority draw in 2013. Fonseca quickly established himself as one of the top fighters from his country with victory after victory, including a fourth-round knockout of Luis Gonzlaez to capture a regional 130-pound belt last August. The 23-year-old will make his U.S. debut when he faces Davis and he enters this contest having won his last five bouts inside of the distance. Fonseca began his 2017 with a third round knockout of Eliecer Lanzas in March and is trained by two-time world champion Ivan Calderon.

“I am super grateful for this great opportunity,” said Fonseca. “The dream of every young boxer is to fight for the world title and this opportunity comes at the best moment of my career and in the biggest in the history of this sport. I will beat Gervonta Davis and I will shock the world that night.”

Nathan Cleverly vs. Badou Jack – WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship

A two-time world champion at light heavyweight, Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) bounced back from a defeat to Andrzej Fonfara in a 2015 Fight of the Year contender to defeat hometown champ Juergen Braehmer last October to pick up his WBA title. Cleverly’s previous title reign saw him take down the likes of Tony Bellew, Nadjib Mohammedi, Shawn Hawk and Tommy Karpency before dropping a contest to Sergey Kovalev. The Wales resident will make his fourth start in the U.S., having won two of his first three contests stateside.

“This is a fight I have wanted ever since Badou Jack moved to light heavyweight and I’m delighted to fight in Vegas on an event like this,” said Cleverly. “I’ve trained long and hard for this fight and I’m ready to be let off the leash. This is the biggest fight of my career so far and I’m going to do a number on Badou Jack on August 26.”

Now fighting in the 175-pound division, Jack’s final fight at 168 pounds came in a title unification on SHOWTIME in January against James DeGale. Jack (21-1-2, 12 KOs) shook off an early knockdown to floor DeGale in the final round in a close majority draw in which both fighters retained their belts. The 2008 Olympian from Gambia won his world title in 2015 by defeating then unbeaten Anthony Dirrell and defended the belt against current champion George Groves and former champion Lucian Bute. The 33-year-old is unbeaten in his last six bouts as he seeks a world title in a second weight class.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity and I’m excited about getting another shot at a world title,” said Jack. “To be a part of this event and fighting on this card is historic. Nothing beats it. I’m excited to get back in the ring. I’m getting ready to take that belt, and win a title in my second weight class. The biggest difference between past training camps and preparing for this fight is the fact that I was training to get the weight down, now I’m training to build muscle and perfect my boxing strategy. This will be a tough fight, but I don’t see any issues getting through it. I feel confident and fans can expect a win by knockout or decision. He’s not leaving with that belt. It’s staying right here in Las Vegas.”

Andrew Tabiti vs. Steve Cunningham – 10 Round Cruiserweight Bout

Originally from Chicago but fighting out of Las Vegas, Tabiti (14-0, 12 KOs) recorded victories against previously unbeaten fighters Keith Tapia and Quantis Graves in his last two outings – both on ShoBox: The New Generation – as he works to solidify himself as a contender in the red hot cruiserweight division. The 27-year-old turned pro in 2013 after amassing a solid 32-6 amateur record and scored knockout victories in his first 10 fights. He’ll battle his most experienced opponent to date when he faces the multiple-time champion Cunningham.

“I’ve always been dedicated when it comes to training and this camp has been no different,” said Tabiti. “I know I am fighting a veteran who has a lot of experience, so I can’t slack on my conditioning and training. He’s tough and he’s only been stopped once and that was when he moved up in weight to heavyweight, so it would be a big statement for me to stop him. This fight is a test for me. Anytime you get in the ring you never really know how things will pan out, but I have a great team. To the fans, expect a victory and a great fight on August 26th because I am going to make sure I come out on top.”

Representing the great fight city of Philadelphia, Cunningham (29-8-1, 13 KOs) returned to action in March with a victory over Felipe Romero after an exciting challenge of cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Glowacki in April 2016. Twice a world champion as a cruiserweight, he defeated Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in 2006 to capture his belt before successfully defending his title against Marco Huck via a twelfth-round TKO. He became a world champion again in 2010 when he stopped Troy Ross in the fifth round. The experienced veteran also owns victories over previously unbeaten fighters Amir Mansour and Natu Visinia and scored a knockdown of Tyson Fury in a losing effort during their 2013 bout.

“This is one of the biggest cards of the decade and its mind blowing to be a part of it,” said Cunningham. “I have to top it off with a victory. Taking on a good, undefeated young prospect is a challenge in itself, but a victory will prove age is just a number. Hard work is a part of my everyday life.”

BUGLIONI: I WANT CLEVERLY AFTER DOMINATING BRITAIN

Frank Buglioni wants the Lord Lonsdale belt for keeps before landing a showdown with WBA Light-Heavyweight king Nathan Cleverly as he defends his British title against Ricky Summers at The O2 in London on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Buglioni closes the curtain on a great season of boxing on Sky Sports – and with the new season set to kick-off at The O2 in September, the 28 year old is setting his sights on putting the crown on the line here again and take another step to owning the belt outright.

Buglioni took the title from Hosea Burton in a fight of the year contender in November, a fight that shone a light on the 175lbs division that had been in the shadows for some time, and a rematch could be the perfect way for Buglioni to place the Lord Lonsdale belt on his mantelpiece before he hunts down Welshman Cleverly.

“Winning the Lord Lonsdale belt outright hasn’t been done at Light-Heavyweight for a long time,” said Buglioni. “The guys that have won it recently – Nathan Cleverly, Tony Bellew, Clinton Woods – they’re great fighters, so it’s brilliant to be in those types of names and to win it outright would be a real honour. But if something bigger presents itself, you have to look at the bigger picture.

“I know what I have got to do to beat Hosea. I’ve taken his best and his hard shots, but that wasn’t me at my best. Now I am the champion, he’s got to leave Manchester and come to my home town where he’d be outnumbered and he’s got the demons in his head now as he knows he can be KO’d by me and he knows he can’t hurt me.

“I’d love that fight and I think the fans would but I don’t think it would be as entertaining as the first one, it’d be more one-sided and get him out of there early. I have to fight my mandatory around September so if it’s not Hosea, he might not get the fight.

“There’s no Light-Heavyweight in Britain that can beat me, including Cleverly, so line them up. It’s a new chapter in my career. Hosea is above British level and I beat him so I think that shows how good I am. I want to win the Lord Lonsdale belt outright and then move onto European and World honours.

“Stieglitz is the European champion and that’d be a great fight but I’m not sure that going to Germany against a German fighter is something what I would want. Bringing him to London would be great, but he’d want a lot of money.

“Nathan has got a lovely jab and a good work rate, but he can go macho and get drawn into a war and there’s flaws in him. He trained with Don Charles for a few weeks so Don knows him inside-out which is bad for Nathan. Don is a real scholar of the sport and when he knows you inside-out, he knows how to unlock the door.”

Buglioni’s clash with Summers is part of a huge night of action in London as Team GB Rio Olympic bronze medal man Joshua Buatsi makes his hotly-anticipated pro debut.

Reece Bellotti goes for his first pro title against Jamie Speight with the WBC International Silver Featherweight strap on the line, Ted Cheeseman also fights for his first belt against English Super-Welterweight champion Matthew Ryan in a British title eliminator and there’s a rivalry brewing between London Cruiserweights Isaac Chamberlain and Lawrence Okolie who both have six rounders on the slate.

Welterweight talent Conor Benn returns from injury and there’s action for Jake Ball, Danny Dignum, Craig Richards and Morgan Jones.

FLOSPORTS TO LIVE STREAM JUERGEN BRAEHMER VS NATHAN CLEVERLY WBA LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT ON FLOBOXING.TV

Nathan Cleverly
Austin, TX (Sept. 27, 2016) – FloSports today announced it has agreed to terms with MP & Silva, an international sports marketing agency, for the live media rights in the United States to the WBA Light Heavyweight title fight Oct. 1 between Juergen Braehmer (48-2) and Nathan Cleverly (29-3). The fight in Hamburg, Germany, will begin at 12:45 p.m. ET between Braehmer, the current title holder, and the former champion Cleverly. The event will stream on FloBoxing.tv.

“We are thrilled to cover this marquee matchup with so much at stake,” FloSports co-founder and CEO Martin Floreani said. “FloBoxing is committed to featuring the best boxing content in the world, and title fights like these help us achieve that goal and grow the sport.”

The main event will be the seventh defense of Braehmer’s WBA regular light heavyweight world title. It is the first title opportunity for Cleverly since being defeated for the WBO title by Sergey Kovalev in August of 2013. The promotion is presented by Team Sauerland.

“We are delighted to partner with FloSports to digitally broadcast Team Sauerland boxing events in the United States,” Frank Uddo, President, North America, MP & Silva said. “This is a great partnership benefitting all parties involved, especially the American boxing fan. Team Sauerland entrusted MP & Silva, a leading international media rights company, to increase the distribution and reach of its boxing brand worldwide, and we believe FloBoxing is the perfect, focused platform to promote their content to a truly dedicated boxing fan-base.”

The German-born Braehmer has won 17 consecutive fights since his last loss in 2008, while British-born Cleverly is coming off a “fight of the year” performance in a narrow defeat to Andrzej Fonfara in October 2015. The two fighters were originally scheduled to meet in 2011, but Braehmer was forced to withdraw after suffering a cut in sparring.

A win for either fighter would put them in the conversation for potential unification fights with either WBC champion Adonis Stevenson or the winner of November’s Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev matchup.

CALZAGHE BACKS CLEVERLY TO DETHRONE WBA WORLD CHAMPION BRAEHMER

joe-calzaghe_workout_image2
Joe Calzaghe is backing his countryman Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) to dethrone WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

The legendary two-weight World Champion, who held WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring magazine titles during his undefeated forty-six-fight career, believes Cleverly ‘speed’ and ‘work rate’ will prove too much for the German veteran.

‘’This is a great opportunity for Nathan,’’ he said. ‘’Braehmer is a good boxer, but if Nathan fights an intelligent fight, and uses his hand speed and work rate, I definitely fancy him to win.

‘’If I was facing Braehmer, I would have done what I always did. I would have used my speed and my boxing ability, and I think I would have won comfortably.

‘’Nathan is a different kind of fighter, but if he plays to his strengths, I’m sure he can get the job done. He’s come back down to light heavyweight, he had a good fight against Fonfara, and now he’s ready to get back into the World title mix.

‘’He’s away, fighting in Germany, so he will need to start fast and dominate the rounds, as any 50-50 rounds will go to the home fighter, but I still fancy him to do it. We saw Enzo Maccarinelli giving Braehmer some trouble at home before his eye started to swell.’’

Calzaghe, who enjoyed some memorable nights overseas, most notably his 2008 Stateside victories over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr, is also the last British boxer to have won a World title fight in Germany against German opposition.

In 2005, the ‘Italian Dragon’ defended his WBO World title against mandatory challenger Mario Veit at the Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig.

‘’That’s another one for the record books,’’ he says. ‘’Hopefully Nathan can be the man to break that record and bring the World title home.

‘’It was a different type of fight for me. Mario Veit was my mandatory challenger. I had already knocked him out in the first round in Cardiff, and then he won about twelve on the bounce and got himself back into the mandatory position.

‘’I always knew I was going to knock him out again, and he went six-rounds the second time, but as I said it was a different situation for me. I came to Germany as the favourite, I dominated from the start and the crowd was pretty subdued. I expect that to be different for Nathan. He has to go over there and take the title from the Champion.’’

CLEVERLY: THIS IS MY DESTINY

Nathan Cleverly
Nathan Cleverly believes it is his ‘destiny’ to beat Juergen Braehmer and be crowned WBA World Light Heavyweight Champion on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany, live on Sky Sports.

Cleverly was scheduled to meet Braehmer for the WBO title in 2011, but with only days to go before the Welshman’s first World title challenge, Braehmer withdrew, leaving Cleverly to fight Aleksy Kuziemski for the vacant belt.

“I was in the car on my way to London when I got the call saying Braehmer hadn’t arrived and the fight was off,” recalls Cleverly. “It was a crazy situation, and the scramble was on to find a replacement opponent in just two days.”

Cleverly would defeat Kuziemski and go on to defend the WBO World title on four occasions before dropping the belt to Russian powerhouse Sergey Kovalev, but despite achieving his ultimate ambition that night at The O2 in London, the 29 year-old admits that Braehmer’s withdrawal amounted to a bittersweet victory.

“It did take the shine off my World title win,” he said. “I wanted to rip that title off Braehmer. He was the World Champion and I wanted to win the belt from him. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way, and although ultimately, I achieved my dream of becoming World Champion, it was a bit unsatisfactory.”

Five years on, Cleverly will finally get his chance to meet Braehmer for the World title, in a fight the boxer from Caerphilly believes he is destined to win.

“This fight has been five years in the making, and with everything that has happened, I just feel it’s my destiny now,” he says.

“Braehmer has had a great career, and I respect him for that, but there comes a time when the older Champion has to move aside and make way for the younger lion to come through. I was confident of beating him five years ago, but I feel even more confident now. It’s my time, and that belt is mine for the taking.”

If Cleverly can overcome his long-standing rival, he will become a two-time World Champion, a feat he hopes will kick-start a successful second phase in his career.

“It’s all about getting that belt and becoming a two-time World Champion,” he says. “That’s all I care about. It’s an opportunity for me to live that dream again. I did it once as 24 year-old, and here I am as a 29 year-old ready to relive it.

“I just want the opportunity to get my hands on that belt and to fulfil my ultimate potential. I don’t feel we’ve seen the best of what I can offer, and getting my hands on that belt will allow me to showcase what I can really do, and make this second phase of my career the best yet.”

Tickets for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship contest between Juergen Braehmer and Nathan Cleverly will be available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de or by calling +49 (0)1806-570044.

CLEVERLY CHALLENGES BRAEHMER FOR WBA WORLD TITLE

Nathan Cleverly
Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) will defend his WBA World Light Heavyweight title against Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) on October 1 at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany, live on Sky Sports.

The fight has been a long time coming with the pair originally slated to meet in 2011 at the O2 in London before an eye injury forced Braehmer to withdraw. Four years later, the fighters were again close to sharing a ring but talks broke down with Cleverly opting to fight in America instead.

Braehmer, who returns following a one-sided points victory over domestic foe Eduard Gutknecht, will now be aiming for a seventh successive defence of his WBA World title against Welsh rival Cleverly, the former WBO World Champion, who announced his return to the light heavyweight division with a 2015 ‘Fight of the Year’ contender versus Andrzej Fonfara.

“In boxing you can never say never,” said the defending champion. “This is a fight the fans have wanted to see for a long time and I’m happy it’s finally happening. I look forward to meeting Nathan Cleverly in the ring at the Jahnsportforum and proving once and for all who is the better boxer.

“Cleverly is a good fighter. He is a former World Champion and I believe he is still one of the best light heavyweights in the world. He has a very exciting offensive style, which I’m sure will make for a great match-up. I will be expecting a tough fight, but with the support of the fans in Neubrandenburg, I’m confident I will win.”

“This fight has been destined to happen and I can’t wait now,” said Cleverly. “It’s finally here – Juergen and I will finally go to battle and I’m looking forward to the challenge.
“I’ve had a good recovery period and rest since the Fonfara fight and I feel fantastic. I’ve had a few niggles and injuries over the last couple of fights but I’ve recovered from them. I’m invigorated and I’m ready to strike again on the World scene and become a two-time World champion.

“Juergen is a great champion and an underrated one. He’s a puncher that has pedigree in the pros and all the way back to the amateurs, he’s a proper professional and a credit to the game. It’s like the old dog fighting the young dog, experience versus youth, but I’m 29 and I have a bagful of experience of my own and I know what I have to do – I am going into the champions backyard and I need to rip the title off him, and that’s what I intend to do.”

“We’re delighted to have finally made this fight between the WBA World Champion Juergen Braehmer and former WBO World Champion Nathan Cleverly,” said promoter Kalle Sauerland. “This is a fight people have been talking about for the last five years, and I’m sure it will live up to everybody’s expectations. Fans should prepare for an explosive fight and a great night of action in Neubrandenburg.”

“I’m delighted to deliver a World title shot for Nathan in a fight that has been many years in the making,” said Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “After his fight of the year contender with Fonfara we have been looking at the big fights only and Braehmer was always the target, it’s a fight that Nathan fancies and has wanted for a long time – I believe that on October 1, Britain will have ANOTHER World champion.”

Tickets for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship contest between Juergen Braehmer and Nathan Cleverly will be available online via www.tickethall.de and www.eventim.de or by calling +49 (0)1806-570044.

Fonfara to fight Cleverly on October 16 in Chicago

Nathan Cleverly
Andrzej Fonfara will take on Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly on October 16 in Chicago and will be televised on Spike TV, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’m excited to return to my hometown of Chicago on this big fight night against a world-class fighter like Nathan Cleverly,” said Fonfara, 27. “This will be a tough fight for both of us. Cleverly is a solid fighter, and it’s no fluke that he was a world champion and that he defended his belt so many times. Our fighting styles guarantee that everyone can expect fireworks on Oct. 16th.”

“I want this fight (against Cleverly) to be a quick stop on my way to a rematch with Adonis Stevenson,” Fonfara said.

“This is a major platform for me to prove that I am more than capable of becoming world champion again,” Cleverly said. “If I beat Fonfara, it’s a doorway fight to the world title and establishing myself as one of the best light heavyweights once again.

“Fonfara is a good fighter. He’s tall, has power and has moved up through the levels in his career. I am looking forward to coming over to Chicago, and I am very confident that our styles will blend well for a really exciting fight.”

Video: Cleverly – Bellew weigh in

Bellew looking to even the score against Cleverly this Saturday on AWE

HBO Boxing After Dark Weigh-In: Adonis Stevenson vs Tony Bellew
San Diego, CA – November 21, 2014 – On Saturday afternoon, November 22, one of the biggest days in boxing will take place as an eagerly anticipated rematch between former Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KO’s)
and former two-time championship challenger Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) airs exclusively and live on
AWE.

The 12-round Cruiserweight World Title eliminator bout will originate from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England and will be broadcast LIVE in the United States on AWE-A Wealth of Entertainment at 1 PM ET / 10 PM PT

On October 15, 2011, Tony Bellew got that match he was clamoring for and that was a world title opportunity with then WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly. It was a bout that was in the making for sometime as they were both undefeated & Cleverly had what Bellew wanted. It turned personal and the grudge match saw Cleverly eek out a majority decision on a grueling affair.

This Saturday, both who have both since suffered setbacks, will meet again but this time they will compete as Cruiserweights with much on the line.

“It felt like my world had just ended,” said Bellew. “You’ve been in a hard fight, you’ve taken a lot of punches and thrown a lot of punches. It hits you hard. I thought I had done enough and I knew it was a really close fight. We were all waiting for him to announce it, it seemed to take an age and when the referee announced him as the winner, he went mad, jumping around the ring,”said Bellew.

“I don’t class it as a loss, I really don’t I look at my career and I believe I’ve been beaten by one man and that is Adonis Stevenson. I believe at worst in that fight with Cleverly you can give it a draw. If you are going to score that fight and say who the better boxer of these two is, it’s me. If you’re going to ask who landed the harder shots in the fight, it’s me. OK, you can say he wins rounds on little bit of extra work rate, especially the last two, but a 12 round fight isn’t about the last two rounds. Over the whole 12 rounds I was the better boxer, I won six rounds clearly and you can’t deny me that.” continued Bellew of the first encounter.

Because of the rivalry, it was a natural when both moved to Cruisweweight that hostilities would be renewed.

“I’m not really that bothered to tell the truth,” said Bellew. “It’s great boxing in front of your home fans, it’s a fantastic feeling, a buzz. I’ve had both sides of the spectrum. I’ve had 10,000 against me and 10,000 with me and let me tell you, it’s a lot better when you have them on your side. They can help spur you on through the dark moments, because when a fight gets hard, there is going to be dark moments, when you need to show what you are about and what you have got in the tank, they can drag it out of you.”

On July 12, Both Cleverly and Bellew shared a bill and scored knockout wins to set this rematch. After Bellew’s win, he tried to fire the first verbal and psychological at Cleverly.

“I walked over and I gave him a piece of my mind,” said Bellew. “Does he really believe you were a World champion. I don’t think he does. The eyes don’t lie. I have looked into the eyes of a true World champion in Adonis Stevenson. He looks ruthless, looks deadly and looks vicious. Looking into Stevenson’s eyes and looking into Cleverly’s eyes, there’s only one World champion there, and I am not fighting him tonight.”

“He is mentally weak. Any man that is talking about retirement shouldn’t be fighting any more, simple as that. He’s fragile and he’s hiding a lot from people. I win the fight because I am too strong, too powerful and I am technically better than him in everything he does.”

Two co-main events feature two WBA world title bouts. Scott Quigg will make the 5th defense of the WBA Super Bantamweight title against Hidenori Otake of Tokyo, Japan. Also co-featured is two-time Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell defending the WBA Bantamweight title against Javier Chacon of Argentina..

If that is not enough, then boxing fans are in for a terrific treat as two-time world title challenger George Groves takes on American Denis Douglin. Video: Cleverly – Bellew II Press conference

Nathan Cleverly seeks his own redemption this Saturday against Bellew

Nathan Cleverly
San Diego, CA – November 18, 2914 – On Saturday afternoon, November 22, one of the biggest days in boxing will take place as an eagerly anticipated rematch between former Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KO’s) and former two-time championship challenger Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) airs exclusively and live on AWE.

The 12-round Cruiserweight World Title eliminator bout will originate from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England and will be broadcast LIVE in the United States on AWE-A Wealth of Entertainment at 1 PM ET / 10 PM PT

Although Cleverly one the first bout, he knows that not only does he need a win but knows that it will be a crowd pleasing affair.

“We have history, it’s a grudge match,”said Cleverly. “The first fight was an excellent fight and the reason why this rematch is happening is not only is it a rivalry and we don’t like each other, but the first fight was an excellent battle. I won the fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight so people want to see it again. I want to fight him again, because I want to silence him once and for all.”

That animosity stems up from before their first battle when at a press conference, Cleverly thought Bellew became disrespectful to the then WBO Light Heavyweight champion.

“We just clash,” said Cleverly. “At the end of the day, I am a winner and in the first press conference I was World champion and he came in with this attitude. I was sat at the table and he kind of looked at me and said something and he got under my skin straight away.

“That fight was set up as a big fight. The press conferences, the clash, the grudge match, it was a ferocious build-up. More importantly though, we both delivered on the night. I delivered a good solid performance and Tony Bellew gave it everything. He threw the kitchen sink at me that night, that was his big chance and it made for an excellent fight.

“I had the phone call saying; ‘Nathan, you’re fighting Tony Bellew on October 15’, and I remember thinking ‘that’s only seven weeks away’. So the build-up wasn’t ideal, I want at least ten weeks for a proper training camp. It is difficult going into a fight knowing that you haven’t had a proper camp but I got on with it, I didn’t make excuses at the time, I just said to myself: ‘I’m World champion, let’s defend my title in his hometown’. That’s what a proper champion does and that is what I did.

Cleverly thought he was through with his Light Heavyweight rival, but when both suffered knockout losses (Cleverly losing his title to Sergey Kovaelv while Bellew was stopped by WBC champion Adonis Stevenson) both decided to move up in weight.

“At the final bell when we embraced he said: ‘Forget doing that again, forget doing that again’. I gave him the hardest fight he’s ever had to go through. It was a tough fight, he was on his last legs – he was spent. He says he had weight issues and he was drained but he gave everything that night, he had nothing else in the tank.”

Cleverly’s personal redemption is that he is looking to get back on top. This time in the Cruiserweight division and a second win over his rival will go a long way into that coming to fruition.

“There’s an incredible amount riding on this fight,” said Cleverly. “It’s personal between us but I know what will happen to the winner. This fight is a gateway to a World title shot and the chance for me to make that two-weight World champion dream a reality. That rarely happens in boxing, only the best fighters achieve it so for me to go on and do it, that’s what dreams are made of.

“I can’t imagine myself losing and it hasn’t crossed my mind because I am so confident of winning. I cannot allow this guy to beat me.

“I wouldn’t say I hate him. He hates me, there’s no doubt about that. He hates me because I’ve beaten him and I’ve been a World champion.”

Because of the first win, Cleverly has the confidence that makes him a favorite to make it two in a row against Bellew.

“I will win this fight because I am all round a better fighter than him. I believe I am a faster puncher than Tony Bellew, I have more energy, more speed and more stamina. Yes, maybe I don’t have the one-punch KO power he carries, but he’s hit me clean with that at Light Heavyweight where he was taking people out, and it didn’t bother me. He may punch harder at Cruiserweight but I’m bigger and stronger. My chin is better, there’s more energy in my legs. So if I can gather the speed, the stamina, the energy levels, the punch variety and the combinations and bring it all up to Cruiserweight, it will be too much for this guy.”

Feigenbutz, who has stopped fifteen of his seventeen opponents, is considered one of Germany’s most exciting boxing prospects. His aggressive style and concussive power has earned him a fearsome reputation. The young star is eager to impress when he travels to Liverpool to face the Italian veteran Di Giacomo.

‘’I’m looking forward to making my UK debut,’’ said Feigenbutz. ‘’It’s the motherland of boxing! ’The fans are amazing and always make for an incredible atmosphere. Even though I am coming over from Germany, I hope they will get behind me and support me in this fight. I’m sure they’re going to love my explosive attacking style.

‘’I may only be 19 years old, but I have unseen power for someone my age. On November 22, Di Giacomo will taste my power, and he’s going to get knocked out! He may be an experienced, he’s old enough to be my father, but he’s not going to stand a chance. Don’t blink or you might miss it!’’

Feigenbutz is the latest addition to a bumper bill in Liverpool, which amongst its star names, features British super middleweights George Groves, James DeGale MBE and Callum Smith. All of whom, the young German considers as potential future opponents.

‘’I would love to fight any one of them,’’ said Feigenbutz. ‘’They all have my respect, but honestly, I believe I could beat all three of them. Once I’ve wiped out my domestic rivals, I would be willing to face any of the British super middleweights!’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’Vincent is an exceptional young talent who has taken the German boxing scene by storm. We’re excited for him to have the opportunity to showcase his skills on such a big show. He is a power punching, no nonsense fighter and the British boxing fans are going to love him!’’

Cleverly v Bellew II is exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office on 22 November with George Groves, Anthony Joshua MBE, James DeGale MBE and World title defences for Scott Quigg and Jamie McDonnell also on the bill. skysports.com/cleverlybellew.

The 12-round Cruiserweight World Title eliminator bout will originate from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England and will be broadcast LIVE in the United States on AWE-A Wealth of Entertainment.

Two co-main events feature two WBA world title bouts. Scott Quigg will make the 5th defense of the WBA Super Bantamweight title against Hidenori Otake of Tokyo, Japan. Also co-featured is two-time Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell defending the WBA Bantamweight title against Walberto Ramos of Colombia.

If that is not enough, then boxing fans are in for a terrific treat as two-time world title challenger George Groves takes on American Denis Douglin. The card also features undefeated British prospect Callum Smith as he sets to battle former world title challenger Nikola Sjekloca. Heavyweight and undefeated 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winner Anthony Joshua takes on 64-fight veteran Michael Sprott.

“This is one of the most heavily packed boxing events, including two world title fights. We’re thrilled to bring this amazing card to AWE viewers,” said AWE President, Charles Herring.

“Cleverly and Bellew have a long rivalry and their first bout was fantastic. We expect more great action as the stakes are higher. The co-main events are unprecedented and we’re delighted to present this level of boxing to fans across the United States exclusively and live on AWE.”

Cleverly, of Wales, has a record of 28-1 with 14 knockouts and is the former WBO Light Heavyweight world champion. He also is a former Commonwealth, British and European champion.

Cleverly won the Interim WBO championship with a 12-round unanimous decision over Nadjib Mohammadi. He was elevated to full champion with his 4th round stoppage over Aleksy Kuziemski. He defended that title 4 times which included his hotly contested majority decision over Bellew. He dropped the belt when he was stopped in 4-rounds by Sergey Kovalev.

Cleverly moved to Cruiserweight and is on a two fight winning streak which includes his most recent outing when he stopped Alejandro Valori to capture WBA Intercontinental Cruiserweight title on July 12.

Bellew of Liverpool is 22-2-1 with 14 knockouts and is riding a two fight winning streak. He is a former Commonwealth and British Light Heavyweight champion.

Bellew won his first 16 bouts which put him in position for the first fight with Cleverly. In that bout, it was a close back and forth action with Cleverly pulling out a majority decision. Bellew then went on a 4-0-1 streak with a draw and win over classy contender Isaac Chilemba to set up his 2nd world title opportunity against Adonis Stevenson. Unfortunately, Bellew was stopped in six rounds against the Canadian.

Like Cleverly, Bellew moved to Cruiserweight and has scored two knockouts which includes his most recent outing when he stopped Julio Cesar Dos Santos on July 11 for the WBO International title.

Quigg to defend against Otake on Cleverly – Bellew II card

Scott Quigg
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Super Bantamweight champion Scott Quigg will defend his title against Hidenori Otake on November 22 in Liverpool, UK as part of the Nathan Cleverly – Tony Bellew rematch card.

“I can’t wait to defend my world title in Liverpool on Nov. 22 on a huge night for British boxing,” Quigg said. “Otake represents the toughest fight of my career and I’m working hard to put in a scintillating performance. He is highly ranked and highly respected with an exciting style. I’m on a big run of KO’s and I don’t intend on stopping.”

DeGale to fight Periban on Cleverly – Bellew card on November 22

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, top rated Super Middleweight James DeGale will take on Marco Antonio Periban on November 22 in Liverpool, England.

“This is like a second final eliminator as if I don’t beat him, I don’t box for a world title,” DeGale said. “It’s a good test. He took Sakio Bika close and he had J’Leon Love all over the place and should have finished him off. He’s not a typical Mexican. He can box on the back foot and he’s going to come to fight and that will bring out the best in me. I am looking forward to it. It’s on a great show so roll on Nov. 22.”

“I didn’t want an eight-round, keep-busy fight,” DeGale said. “I wanted a name that will impress people when I win in style and it will set up a fight with Carl. It’s not about me fighting Carl, though, it’s about me getting my shot at the world title and making history becoming the first British gold medalist to win a world title.”

Quigg and McDonnell to defend titles on Cleverly – Bellew card

Scott Quigg
WBA Super Bantamweight champion Scott Quigg and IBF Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell will defend their titles on a big bill on November 22 in Liverpool that will support the rematch between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew.

“Many people have asked me why I am going back to Liverpool to fight Tony Bellew again, and the answer is simple: I don’t like him,” Cleverly said. “He talks too much, and although I’ve beaten him before in front of his home fans, I am going to KO him this time around. He will not hear the final bell, I can guarantee you that. I will deal with him all over again and become a two-weight world champion.”

Said Bellew: “I have been waiting for this fight for three years, and now it is here. Revenge is the only thing on my mind. I have seen his horrible face in my head many nights since the fight, but I have not had the chance to make it right. This is a chapter in my life that I need to close, and I will do that by ending Nathan Cleverly’s career on Nov. 22.

“I am in the sport to be successful and win titles, but this fight means more to me than any of that. This is personal, and he will not want to enter a boxing ring after I have finished with him. It’s my first headlining show on Sky Sports Box Office, and that just underlines how big this fight is, and I am going to make sure my performance is a destructive and memorable one.”

Cleverly to rematch Bellew at Cruiserweight

cleverly-150x150
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will rematch one of his former opponents in Tony Bellew in November in England.

“I’m so pleased to get this over the line and deliver another huge domestic grudge match for British boxing,” Hearn said. “This fight has everything — quality, controversy and a genuine rivalry that will lead to a fascinating buildup and a wonderful night at the Echo Arena.”

“I cannot wait for this,” Cleverly said. “I beat him in front of his people before and this time I’m going to knock him out in front of his people. There will be no final bell in this fight. It’s going to be brutal. Expect fireworks from the buildup, the press conferences, the weigh-in and the fight, but also expect the same result — a Nathan Cleverly victory, and then I will become a two-weight world champion.”

Bellew is eager for revenge.

“I want this more than any fight in the world,” Bellew said. “I’ve dreamt about this moment, about putting this right, about ending him. His face will be in my mind every day in camp, every night. I can’t explain how badly I want to knock him out and that’s exactly how it will end in November. For the people of Liverpool, expect a great occasion, an epic buildup and an emotional fight.”

Selby earns Featherweight title shot with decision over Koasicha

Lee Selby earned a shot at WBC Featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez with a 12-round unanimous decision over Romulo Koasicha in a WBC title elimination bout as well as a WBC International title fight at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.

Selby was effective with the volume of punches just doing a solid job of keeping Koasicha on the receiving end of three and four punch combinations. Koasicha had a few opportunities in round’s five and seven as he got through with some solid left hooks but he was not able to capitalize on t his few effective moments. Down the stretch, Selby was not challenged in the least as he boxed and moved well and cruised home to the victory to the tune of 119-109, 119-109 and 119-110.

Selby, 125 1/2 lbs of Barrie, Wales is now 19-1. Koasicha, 125 1/2 lbs of San Luis Potasi, Mexico drops to 21-4.

Former world Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly made a splash in his Cruiserweight debut by taking out Shawn Corbin in round two of their scheduled 12-round WBA Intercontinental title bout.

Cleverly hurt Corbin with and uppercut and was relentless with pinpoint punches that continued to snap the head of Corbin back until referee Richie Davies stopped the bout at 2:19 of round two.

Cleverly, 198 1/2 lbs of Wales is now 27-1 with 13 knockouts. Corbin, 195 1/2 lbs of Trinidad and Tobago is now 17-5.

Former world champion Gavin Rees and Gary Buckland staged their 2nd war in just over three months that saw Rees capture a split decision in a 12 round Lightweight bout that was Rees’ final ring outing.

The two traded hard shots in close for basically all 12 rounds that saw many ebbs and flows during the contest. Both guys landed hard thudding shots and had each other in trouble. Rees was cut over his left eye in round 10 but came back to rock Buckland several times in the final two frames.

Rees had Buckland in trouble in the final round but Buckland came on to land a few good power punches of his own.

Rees, 137 lbs of Newbridge, Wales won by scores of 117-113 and 117-112 while Buckland took a card 117-112.

Rees finishes his career with a record of 38-4-1. Buckland, 137 of Cardiff, Wales is now 28-4.

Good looking Super Middleweight prospect Callum Smith took out Tobias Webb in round two of their scheduled 10-round WBC International Super Middleweight bout.

Smith droped Webb four times in round two, three of them were from vicious body shots. The final knockdown was a left to the body that sent Webb down on all fours and he was counted out at 2:50 of round two.

Smith, 166 3/4 lbs of Liverpool is now 11-0 with 9 knockouts. Webb, 167 1/2 lbs is now 14-2-1.

Paul Smith Jr tuned up for a potential world title shot with Arthur Abraham with a 2nd round destruction over David Sarabia in a eight round Light Heavyweight bout.

Smith dropped Sarabia in the 1st round from a right hand. He hurt Sarabia in round two and pounced on him with a big barrage of punches and the fight was stopped at 1:17 of round two.

Smith, 171 3/4 lbs of Liverpool, UK is now 35-3 with 20 KO’s. Sarabia, 170 1/4 lbs of Spain is now 7-4-2.

Former world champion Nathan Cleverly looks to make impression on Cruiserweight division this Saturday on AWE

cleverly-150x150
San Diego, CA – May 16, 2014 -This Saturday afternoon, former WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) will make his debut as a Cruiserweight when he takes on Sean Corbin in a 12-round bout for the WBA Intercontinental title.

The card will be broadcast in the United State on AWE and will begin at 2:30 PM ET and will originate from the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.

Cleverly of Wales is looking to start anew after losing his WBO Light Heavyweight title when he was stopped by Sergey Kovalev last August 17.

In the main event, Featherweight contender Lee Selby (18-1, 7 KO’s) will look to inch closer to to a world title shot when he takes on tough Mexican Romulo Koasicha (21-3, 12 KO’s) in a bout that will contested for the WBC International title.

Cleverly of Wales is looking to start anew after losing his WBO Light Heavyweight title when he was stopped by Sergey Kovalev last August 17.

Cleverly is in a good state of mind despite the loss to Kovalev and believes the new weight is a fresh start.

“Everything is great. My weight is good. I feel strong and fresh and I am eager to see how i perform at this weight. I know there are a few question marks and I will look to see how I perform at Cruiserweight,” said Cleverly.

After coming off such a stunning defeat, Cleverly understands that he will have doubters but he feels otherwise.

“I have no doubt. I took a nice break and feel refreshed. I feel strong and am in a good place. I am ready for the challenge.”

Corbin of Trinidad and Tobago has a record of 17-4 with 12 knockouts could pose to be a formidable challenge Ceverly as he has won two in a row and also has a win over former WBC champion Wayne Braithwaite.

“Corbin is tall and in shape. He looks good but I should take care of him if I want to progress. I have to beat this guy.”

With a win, there is already speculation of a rematch with Tony Bellew. The two met in 2011 when Cleverly won a hotly contested majority decision in what was Cleverly’s 2nd title defense. There is no love loss between the two and like Cleverly, Bellew just moved up to the Cruiserweight division.

“I won the 1st fight with Bellew. The fans like these rivalries. I want the big fights. That fight creates hype and I think it could be a fight the fans want.”

Bellew aside, Cleverly loved being a world champion and he wants to have that feeling again. He is not targeting any champion in particular but would love a shot sooner rather than later.

“I look at all the champs as good solid fighters. In a few fights I want to be ready to challenge one of them. I need to win my next three fights to get that opportunity. I will be back to my best. I am looking to be involved in exciting fights. I have a fan friendly style and I will be back to my best as a Cruiserweight,” finished Cleverly.

A stacked undercard has been arranged by promoter Eddie Hearns of Matchroom Sport. In a 12-round Battle for the WBC International Super Middleweight title, undefeated Callum Smith (10-0, 8 KO’s) will take on Tobias Webb (14-1-1, 2 KO’s). Gary Buckland (28-3, 9 KO’s) will battle former world champion Gavin Rees (37-4-1, 18 KO’s). Also former Light Heavyweight champion, Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) will make his Cruiserweight debut against Sean Corbin (17-4, 12 KO’s)

BERMAN SLAMS ‘INJURED’ CLEVERLY

cleverly-150x150
Monte Carlo (January 7, 2014) Golden Gloves’ Rodney Berman has reacted furiously to former world champion Nathan Cleverly’s abrupt withdrawal from his February 1 fight against Junior Makabu in an international 10-rounder on the Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza card.

Berman was reacting to reports, corroborated by Frank Warren, that Cleverly had injured himself – for the second time – ahead of his cruiserweight debut against the big-hitting African.

“I knew he’d pull out,” fumed Berman. “He’s not a true champion, I always felt that. Whatever excuse Cleverly is making, I know he hasn’t been injured. He pulled out because he realised he had no chance against Makabu. Everyone said that when the fight was signed and it obviously dawned on him.

“I always suspected he was molly-coddled. Frank Warren clearly shot his bolt by doing the deal and now has to accommodate his fighter wanting out.”

Berman was unfazed by the development, saying he would secure a replacement for Makabu, who will be seeking his 16th win in 17 fights.

The tournament is topped by boxing’s fastest rising superstar, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, who will defend his WBA and IBO middleweight belts against former world title challenger Osumanu Adama.

Also featured are top-ranked Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) of the UK and third-ranked Jarrod Fletcher (17-1, 10 KOs).

FORMER WORLD CHAMPION CLEVERLY TO FACE BIG-HITTING MAKABU

cleverly-150x150
London / Johannesburg / Monte Carlo (December 24, 2013) – Former WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly has replaced Pawel Kolodziej as an opponent for big-hitting cruiserweight Junior Makabu on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin’s championship fight at the Monte Carlo Boxing Bonanza on February 1, 2014.

The tournament is presented by Africa’s promotional giant, Golden Gloves of South Africa.

Cleverly (26-1, 12 KOs) stepped in after Kolodziej had second thoughts about facing the brutal puncher from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The pair will meet in a 10-round non-title bout.

“I’m very happy about the change,” enthused Berman. “Cleverly is a bigger name by far and has been in with outstanding boxers. The UK has a great heritage of producing top cruiserweights and Cleverly is another in this long line. I expect the fight against Makabu will be explosive.”

Makabu (15-0, 14 KOs) is arguably the most devastating puncher in the cruiserweight division with all but one of his wins having come by knockout.

Having recently surrendered his WBO title, Cleverly has decided to campaign at cruiserweight where he anticipates more success after an outstanding reign in which he ran up 26 straight wins.

A former European, British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion, the Welshman cleaned up in Britain before capturing the interim WBO title against Nabjib Mohammedi in 2010. He then beat Aleksy Kuziemski for the WBO title outright in his next fight, in 2011.

Four successful title defences followed, the best of them a stoppage defeat of Shawn Hawk in Los Angeles in 2012.

In Cleverly’s most recent fight, he lost in four rounds to undefeated Sergey Kovalev in Cardiff, Wales in August, prompting his move up a division where he meets thedangerous Makabu.

Cleverly is excited to get the opportunity to regain a world title and end the year as world champion after losing his WBO crown.

BOXNATION’S BULGING CALENDAR STARTS OFF WITH MIKEY GARCIA’S WORLD TITLE HUNT AGAINST ROMAN MARTINEZ LIVE THIS WEEKEND

Mikey_Garcia
LONDON (8 Nov) – Rising star Mikey Garcia’s battle with WBO super-featherweight world champion Roman Martinez this weekend will act as the appetiser before BoxNation’s incredible festive fight feast.

The world’s best boxing channel kicks-off what will be a mouth-watering next couple of months with the fight games biggest cards set to be featured live and exclusive all the way until Christmas, starting with Saturday night’s Texas showdown.

‘The Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire is also set to make his return on the bill against old foe Vic Darchinyan, following his defeat against Cuban kingpin Guillermo Rigondeaux last April.

The main event, though, sees Garcia, the undefeated former WBO featherweight world champion, move up to the 130 pound weight class with the aim of capturing his second title against the skilled ‘Rocky’ Martinez.

Having been stripped of his featherweight crown on the scales, after failing to make the weight against Juan Manuel Lopez in his last bout, Garcia is determined to bounce back and regain his place amongst boxing’s elite.

“I was very sad. I worked very hard to get that title – I waited over two years in line to get that title shot and to not be able to defend and to lose it on the scale – it was hard,” said Garcia.

“As we were walking down the elevator and through the hallways going to the weigh-in knowing that I was no longer champion – I just tried to move forward and do the best that I could,” he said.

The 25-year-old fighting out of Oxnard, California is well aware it’s not going to be an easy ride against Martinez, who has only lost one bout out of 30, that coming in a narrow points decision against Scotland’s Ricky Burns.

“He’s very tough, very durable,” said Garcia. “He’s one of the most resilient guys out there. He is a world champion and he’s not going to let that title slip out of his hands easily. He’s going to fight very hard to keep that title. That’s why I think it’s going to be a very good fight for me,” he added.

“I am not only moving up in weight but I am fighting a world champion in Rocky Martinez and we are doing all the things necessary to be in the best shape possible to be prepared for Rocky Martinez,” Garcia said.

Martinez goes into the bout having beaten undefeated prospect Diego Magdaleno and is confident he will similarly hand Garcia his first loss.

“I know that he is an intelligent guy, very smart and he knows how to throw his punches together and that’s why we trained so hard – to be ready for anything. I think I can take his punches. I think I have proven myself that I am able to take punches. So it is a question of just being ready and being at my best,” Martinez said.

“I should be the favourite. I am the champion and I am naturally the bigger guy. I am strong and I prepared myself well and I believe I am going to win this fight because of that,” he said.

Following BoxNation’s airing of Martinez vs. Garcia, the ‘Channel of Champions’ will be showing the following events live and exclusive: Maldonado Jr. vs. Ramos Jr – Golden Boy Live! (Nov 11), Sergey Rabchenko vs. Cedric Vitu (Nov 16), Andre Ward vs. Edwin Rodriguez (Nov 16), Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios (Nov 23), Antonio Tarver vs. Mike Sheppard (Nov 26), Copper Box Arena show featuring Dereck Chisora and Nathan Cleverly (Nov 30), Paul Smith vs. Luke Blackledge (Dec 7), Paulie Malignaggi vs. Zab Judah (Dec 7), Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Joseph Agbeko (Dec 7), Juergen Braehmer vs. Marcus Oliveira (Dec 14), Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana (Dec 14) and Stuart Hall vs. Vusi Malinga (Dec 21).

In addition to this mammoth lineup BoxNation will also be showing the award winning 24/7 series as it delves into the camps of Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios. The UK premiere of Episode 1 will be on Wednesday Nov 13th at 9pm, followed by Episode 2 on Wednesday Nov 20th at 9pm and Episode 3 on Friday 22nd Nov at 9pm.

Fight fans can get all this for just £10 a month (plus a one-off £10 registration fee). Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Martinez vs. Garcia is live from 1.30am this Sunday morning on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Super-middleweight king Andre Ward’s world title showdown added to stacked BoxNation calendar

WardWins300
ONDON (31 Oct) – BoxNation’s knockout November is set to pack even more of a punch with the channel adding super-middleweight supremo Andre Ward’s crunch world title clash with undefeated Edwin Rodriguez to its star studded lineup.

The encounter sees the world’s best 168-pounder, Ward, defend his WBA world super-middleweight title on November 16th in Ontario, California against the ferocious 28-year-old from the Dominican Republic, adding yet another mouth-watering matchup on the ‘Channel of Champions’.

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao’s ring return against the formidable Brandon Rios in Macao, China on November 23rd and Queensberry’s Copper Box extravaganza on November 30th, featuring heavyweight hitman Dereck Chisora and former world champion Nathan Cleverly, are the other main attractions in a jam-packed November schedule.

And now, with the addition of Ward, regarded as one of the slickest and best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, BoxNation has yet again delivered a fight that will have boxing fans on the edge of their seat.

The bout with the hardened Rodriguez comes after a 14-month layoff for Ward, due to a shoulder injury, having previously worked his way through some of the very best including Chad Dawson, Mikkel Kessler and Britain’s Carl Froch, capturing the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world titles along the way.

“I’m excited to get back in the ring on November 16,” stated the champion Ward. “The opponent is Edwin Rodriguez. He’s a young, hungry, undefeated fighter who doesn’t believe he can lose and it’s my job to change his mind. I think he and his team feel like they are going to catch me slipping coming off of surgery and the layoff. I try to live like a champion. I stay in the gym, eat well, and don’t abuse my body and this rest that I got was needed. I don’t feel like the layoff will hurt me, I feel like it will help me. It allowed me to rest mentally and physically, and I want to show the fans on November 16 that I’m better than I was before I left.”

After making a huge statement in his last bout, stopping Denis Grachev in the first round at the ‘Monaco Million Dollar Super Four Tournament’,

Rodriguez believes he has all the tools to cause a big upset. “Vince Lombardi once said, ‘Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.’ On November 16th, I know I will win,” said Rodriguez.

Jim McMunn, General Manager of BoxNation, said: “It’s great that we continue to deliver the biggest and best boxing shows live and exclusive on BoxNation. The aim of the channel from the outset was to make sure British fights fans had access to the best fights from all over the world at the very best possible value.
