OSSIE DURAN LOOKING FOR BIG FIGHTS

NEWARK, NJ (June 18, 2012)— Middleweight contender Ossie Duran is looking for a breakthrough fight and has his eye set on a potential rematch with Fernando Guerrero.

Duran and Guerrero met on October 10, 2009 that ended up with Guerrero winning a majority decision in his hometown in Salisbury, Maryland.

In that fight, Duran scored a knockdown in the tenth and final round for which there was controversy.

“He was knocked down and he had to be helped back in the ring” with seconds left, said Duran’s advisor Vinny LaManna.

“Look at the scores and you can tell who really won that fight”, continued LaManna when referring to the tallies that read 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95 in favor of Guerrero.

“its defiantly a fight we want at this point”

Duran of Paterson, New Jersey via Accra, Ghana has maybe the most deceiving record in the sports as he is 26-10-2 with ten knockouts.

He has fought some of the best in Guerrero, James Kirkland, Eromesele Albert, and Brandon Gonzales. In his last bout he lost yet another controversial decision to Avtandil Khurtsidze in Russia for the WBC Silver Championship.

“Some of the bouts he clearly won and got screwed on the decision. He clearly beat Gonzales on SHO BOX and he fought great in Russia. Now we are back to the drawing board and weather it’s a Guerrero or someone like Kelly Pavlik or Lucian Bute, Ossie will be ready for the challenge and perform at a high level”.

TEAM DURAN TO LOOK INTO GONZALES DECISION

PATERSON, NJ (October 31, 2011)—This past Friday night, Middleweight Ossie Duran took on undefeated Brandon Gonzales in the nationally televised main event on Sho Box: The New Generation.

The fight, which took place in Duran’s home state of New Jersey, was a good fight with both combatants fighting hard.

As the fight wore on, it became clear that Duran was imposing his will his effective jab that set up a diverse selection of landed punches.

When the final bell rang, to the dismay of Duran and his team at Gulfstream Promotions, it was announced that Gonzales had taken the fight by split decision.

With that decision Gulfstream has decided to ask the New Jersey Boxing Commission to take a look at the tape to see what they thought of the decision.

“We feel Ossie didn’t get a well deserved decision”, said advisor to Duran Vinny LaManna.

“We just want the Commission to look at all things. Sitting ringside we thought Ossie won six rounds to two no question.”

“Watching the tape of the SHOWTIME broadcast only confirmed what everyone at ringside saw. Ossie won the fight. A reputable guy like SHOWTIME analyst Steve Farhood had Ossie winning the fight so I am not alone in what we saw”

“I want to thank Tom Brown and Goossen Tutor for giving Ossie the opportunity. At the end of the day, Ossie trained so hard and we had been in discussions for some major things with Ossie had he won this bout. Because of what we feel is a bad decision, those are on hold and keeps Ossie from his dream of fighting for a world title.”

Gonzales gets decision over Duran

Brandon Gonzales received an eight round split decision over Ossie Duran in a Middleweight bout at Ballys in Atlantic City.

It was Duran who controlled the action off of his jab that set up a variety of punches that ranged from flush overhand rights to good body work. Duran was not known a left hook artist actually landed a decent amount of those punches. Gonzales did have some solid moments in the bout but they were sandwiched in between the more consistent output of Duran.

Gonzales, 161 1/2 lbs of Sacramento, CA won by scores of 77-75 on two cards and is now 15-0-1. Duran, 161 lbs of Accra, Ghana won the third card by a 78-74 tally but is now 26-9-2.

“We expected an all-out brawl coming in,” said Gonzales. “The 10-month layoff didn’t make it any easier. Virgil (Hunter) said I had to step it up those last three rounds and that’s exactly what I did. I listened to my corner and stayed compose and let my hands go first. I think it was a great victory tonight. I hired the best trainer in boxing in Virgil Hunter. We pulled it out.”

Artemio Reyes scored an eight round unanimous decision over previous undefeated and former U.S. Olumpian Javier Molina in a Welterweight bout.

It was evident from the second round on that it was going to be a rough night for Molina as Reyes continuously beat Molina to the punch. The two waged war inside for just about the whole fight where Reyes landed some hard body shots and was diverse with his attack by landing over hand rights and solid uppercuts. Molina fought well but Reyes was more effective in this active fight.

Reyes, 146 lbs of Colton, CA won by scores of 78-74; 77-75 and 77-75 and is now 14-1. Molina, 147 lbs of Norwalk, CA is now 9-1.

Reyes’ father has been in a coma since a tragic car accident in 2008 left him in a vegetative state. “Fighting 4 Pops” is his life statement and those words are written into his trunks.

After his emotional win, Reyes said of the fight, “We trained hard, ridiculously hard. It was insane, man. I didn’t stop punching the entire time. We knew it was going to be a long fight, you know, eight rounds. It was a good fight. We trained hard.”

BRANDON GONZALES vs. OSSIE DURAN JAVIER MOLINA vs. ARTEMIO REYES FINAL WEIGHTS AND QUOTES

Friday, Oct. 28, Bally’s Grand Ballroom, Atlantic City, N.J.

Live at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) on SHOWTIME®

NOTE: WEIGHTS (Oct. 27, 2011) – Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (14-0-1, 10 KOs) of Sacramento, Calif., weighed in at 161.5 pounds and Ossie “The Ghanaian Gladiator” Duran (26-8-2, 10 KOs) of Paterson, N.J., 161 pounds one day before their eight-round middleweight main event showdown on ShoBox: The New Generation,Friday, Oct. 28, at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Bally’s Grand Ballroom in Atlantic City, N.J.

In the eight-round welterweight co-feature, 2008 US Olympian Javier “El Intocable” Molina (9-0, 4 KOs) from Norwalk, Calif., tipped the scales at 146 pounds and Artemio “King” Reyes (13-1, 11 KOs) of Colton, Calif., weighed 147 pounds.

Here’s what each fighter had to say on Thursday:

BRANDON GONZALES:

“Nothing looks better than winning. Whether it’s in sparring or a fight on TV, I always try to perform to the top level.

“As far as my work ethic goes, it was always there. But what my trainer Virgil (Hunter) brings to the table is peace of mind and consistency. He knows so much about nutrition, strength and conditioning. He brings it all together.”

OSSIE DURAN:

“Gonzales has got to go through me so tomorrow we’ll see if he can. I need to look good so I can get more TV fights. That’s why I took this fight.

“Every fight is different. Every fighter is different. When I fought (James) Kirkland on ShoBox, the pace was quick. It had to be. For Gonzales, I’ll do whatever I need to do to prove to people I’m for real.”

JAVIER MOLINA:

“Reyes is predicting he’ll knock me out but I have no comment on that. Saying and doing are two separate things.

“I think Reyes is a good fighter and it’s time for me to step up so I took the fight.

“I’m happy to be on ShoBox. It’s my first ShoBox fight so I’m excited … and confident.”

ARTEMIO REYES:

“I took this fight for the opportunity to be on ShoBox. I couldn’t pass it up. It’s very important to look good, to catch the eye of people who put on the nationally televised fights.

“I’m going to knock (Molina) out. I’ve had a great camp. He hasn’t faced anybody. I have a great team around me. It’s mixture of everything.”

BRANDON GONZALES AND JAVIER MOLINA READY TO MAKE THEIR MARK ON SHOBOX DEBUT OCT. 28 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 21, 2011) – Unbeaten through his first 15 bouts, highly touted middleweight prospect Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales is expecting next Friday’s ShoBox: The New Generation telecast to be nothing short of exciting and eye-opening. Gonzales, who goes toe-to-toe with the very tough Ossie Duran next Friday, Oct. 28 at Bally’s Atlantic City (live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) last made headlines when he opened a cut above the right eye of sparring partner and WBA Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward earlier this month. The accidental cut resulted in the postponement of the SHOWTIME Super Six World Boxing Classic Final between Ward and his WBC counterpart Carl Froch. This time Gonzales wants to make headlines by stopping the durable Duran.

“I told Andre he prepared me for this opportunity,” Gonzales said, “and it’s my chance to make the best of it on SHOWTIME.”

The ShoBox telecast will feature Gonzales vs. Duran in the main event and an opening televised match between former 2008 Olympian, Javier Molina (9-0, 4 KO’s) and knockout artist Artemio “King” Reyes (13-1, 11 KO’s). The unbeaten 21-year old Molina will be making his fifth start in 2011 and first in a match slated for eight rounds. Seemingly recovered from a hand injury that sidelined him between November 2009 and October 2010, the impressive Olympian will face his most formidable and experienced challenger to date in Reyes.

The personable, soft-spoken Molina went 153-13 during an extensive, outstanding amateur career. At age 18, he was the youngest member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that competed in Beijing. He turned pro with a second-round knockout over Jamie Cabrera on March 27, 2009.

Both Goossen Tutor Promotions prospects are in a position to go to that next level with victories next week. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about Duran, but these are the fights that will show fans what type of fighter I am,” Gonzales reiterated.

Molina said, “It’s showtime with this fight.” The Norwalk, Calif., resident went on to say, “I know Reyes well and it’ll be a fight, but that’s nothing new. That’s what fans want to see and I’m ready to put on a show.”

The Molina-Reyes super welterweight bout is scheduled for 8 rounds.

Tickets, priced at $75 and $50, can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster retail outlets, Ticketmaster Call Center 800-745-3000 or Bally’s Atlantic City (day of the event). The first undercard non-televised fight will begin at 9 p.m. ET.

“Not only for myself, but my team my two country’s Africa and the United States of America. I want to thank Vinny Ponte, and my team for giving me this title opportunity. I want to win a world title more than ever and I need to first beat Latif Munday to achieve my dream.”

Ossie Duran cruises to victory over Matt Vanda–WATCH FIGHT ON DEMAND ON GFL

NORTH BERGEN, NJ — In a ten round middleweight bout, Ossie “The Ghanaian Gladiator” Duran (25-8-2, 9 KO) easily outpointed tough veteran, Matt “The Predator” Vanda (43-11, 25 KO). Working behind an electric jab, Duran was awarded a unanimous decisions by the scores of 99-91 and 100-90 twice.

From the opening bell Duran established an effective jab, consistently tagging Vanda at will. With his snapping jab, Duran was able to keep the usually combative Vanda at bay, never letting him fight on the inside.

After breezing through two rounds, Duran found himself trading with Vanda early in round three. “The Predator” came out aggressive, trying to turn the tide, but it was not meant to be. Every time Vanda enjoyed a bit of success, Duran would fire right back even the score.

By round four, Duran was peppering Vanda with a variety of punches. Besides throwing his unavoidable jab, “The Ghanaian Gladiator” was beginning to frequently land ill-intentioned body blows. Vanda’s suspect defense did little to stop the determined Duran as he began punching through or around “The Predator’s” gloves and to an exposed body.

In round seven, Vanda showed a sense of urgency by firing left hooks and straight rights Duran’s way. He tried to overwhelm Duran with power punches and backed the “Ghanaian Gladiator” up against the ropes, where he pounded away at a well-defended Duran.

Although this was Vanda’s most successful round, “The Predator” ran out of gas in the final minute, not throwing many punches and allowing the persistent Duran to steal the round.

Duran warded off a few more Vanda attacks before the final bell, but never found himself in any danger.

Juan “JZ” Zegarra vs. Bryan “The Brick” Abraham — 4 Rounds, Jr. Welterweight

In a bout that was explosive while it lasted, Juan “JZ” Zegarra stopped Bryan “The Brick” Abraham within two rounds to improve his already impressive record to 6-0, with 6 KOs.

The fight’s opening punch was a straight left hand courtesy of Zegarra that landed flush on the face of Abraham (2-4-2, 2 KO). To his credit, Abraham fired right back, connecting with wide but heavy punches. Zegarra seemingly respected Abraham’s power, but was willing to continue trading with him for the rest of the round.

Zegarra, a North Bergen import, via Lima, Peru, landed a huge straight left that rocked Abraham, sending him off balance. Abraham, although never falling to canvass, used his gloves to help keep him on his feet, resulting in a knockdown.

In the second round, Zegarra continued to trade with Abraham, seemingly willing to eat a punch or two in order to land his own shots. The Peruvian was clearly getting the better of the exchanges when his persistence paid off when he stunned Abraham with a huge left, sending him back into the ropes where Zegarra followed up and finished the job. Referee Eddie Cotten saw enough and called a halt to the bout at the 1:46 mark in round two.

Todd Erickson vs. Joe Dunn — 4 Rounds, Super Middleweights

In an impressive performance, Dover, New Jersey’s Todd Erickson (2-4-1, 1 KO) scored a unanimous decision victory of Philadelphia’s Joe Dunn.

Erickson used his height and reach advantage to keep Dunn from ever landing anything significant. The taller Erickson worked behind an effective jab in the early goings and gained more confidence as the bout progressed, as he rattled off more combinations in the last two rounds.

Dunn spent the first three rounds an arms length away from Erickson. In the final round, showing a little more urgency, Dunn attempted to get on the inside and fire off some punches, but he ended up paying a price for his efforts.

Erickson cruised to a unanimous decision victory with all three judges scoring it 40-36 for the fan-favorite.

Juan “The Beast” Rodriguez vs. Salim “The Dream” Al Quaadir — 4 Rounds, Jr. Middleweight

Juan “The Beast” Rodriguez made quick of Salim “The Dream” Al Quaadir to improve his record to 5-0, 3 KOs. Rodriguez dropped Al Quaadir (1-3) twice in the first round, with the second one concluding the fight.

Al Quaadir, who was fighting for the first time in twelve years, must have wished he never returned, as he spent the 2:57 of the first round on the receiving end of “The Beast’s” vicious punches.

Midway through the inaugural round, Al Quaadir took a knee after Rodriguez rattled off a steady stream of punches while Al Quaadir was backed into a corner.

The second knockdown, which Al Quaadir never recovered from, came courtesy of a thudding right to the body. The fight was stopped at the 2:57 mark of the first round.

Deano “Bad Newz” Burrell vs. John Passantino — 4 Rounds, Lightweight

In his highly anticipated professional debut, Deano “Bad Newz” Burrell (1-0, 1 KO) did not disappoint the tens of fans who traveled from London to North Bergen to watch him fight. For the four minutes and forty-four seconds Burrell was in the ring, he was dishing out punishment to Selden, New York’s John Passantino (0-2).

Burrell, a southpaw, battered his smaller opponent in the opening round, dropping him with a huge overhand left at the end of the round.

In the second round, Burrell picked up right were he left off, punishing his opponent with crackling body shots, ultimately forcing Passantino the drop to one knee. After beating the referee’s count, the spent Passantino backed into the ropes, where he became prey for a predator. Burrell pummeled Passantino until the referee stopped the bout at the 1:44 mark of round two.

Donald “Stone Face” Bernard vs. Rogilio Sanchez — 4 Rounds, Jr. Middleweight

In the night’s opening bout, Paterson, New Jersey’s Donald Bernard (2-0) was awarded a split decision victory over Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Rogilio Sanchez.

Sanchez forced the action the entire fight, always coming forward and pressuring Bernard. In a fight that was anything but a defensive clinic, both fighter’s had their fare share of success, but also put their chins to the test.

In the end, Bernard was awarded the split decision victory.

Judges Tony Perez and Pierre Benoist scored the bout 39-37 in favor of Bernard, while judge Alan Rubenstein scored it 39-37 in favor of Sanchez.

Ossie Duran: “I’m Hungry!”

Paterson, NJ’s Ossie Duran has every reason to believe he is one of the hungriest fighters in the sport. Dubbed as “The Ghanaian Gladiator”, Duran’s spent much of his career fighting in his opponents’ backyards and has yielded mixed results. At 24-8-2 (9 KO’s), he’s dropped close decisions against favored and well regarded fighters in James Kirkland, David Lopez and Fernando Guerrero. He also holds victories over former contenders Jaime Moore and Jonathan Reid.

On November 12, he will enter the squared circle against fellow tough luck contender Matt Vanda at nearby Schuetzen Park in a role he’s far from accustomed to; as a hometown favorite. 15rounds exclusively spoke with Duran about his journey as a fighter and future outlook.

Matt Yanofsky: This will be one of the first fights for you in quite some time where you won’t have to fight in your opponent’s hometown. How does that feel?

Ossie Duran: It feels good! I am training hard to put on a good show for my fans in New Jersey.

MY: Matt Vanda is pretty similar to you career and record wise. Both of you have some losses with a number of them coming to good fighters. Do you expect this to be a tough fight?

OD: Yeah I have seen some of his (fights on tape) and I don’t underrate any fighter. This is going to be a good fight.

MY: What do you see leading you to victory?

OD: I am going to use my jab and good defense. I am going to keep on doing what I have in training camp. I am training hard for a good performance.

MY: As mentioned, this fight will take place in your hometown, but you are a New Jersey transplant since you didn’t grow up in the area. A lot of fans and media don’t know much about you yet. What kind of crowd are you expecting to bring for your first fight near Paterson?

OD: Since I have been in New Jersey, I have gone around to a lot of different gyms, so I think people have seen (what I can do in the ring). I also have a lot of friends who come to my fights and travel to see me, so I expect a lot of people to be there cheering for me.

MY: What can fans who haven’t previously seen you expect come November 12?

OD: A different Ossie Duran! I have been in the state for a few years now and see how (they fight over here) so I have transformed my style. I am becoming a powerful puncher so fans will like what they see.

MY: Vanda is a tough fighter but is generally viewed as a stepping stone opponent. Although you’ve fallen short in the past, the boxing world knows that you can hang with a top notch fighter. If you are victorious, who is on your radar?

OD: Right now I am focused on Matt Vanda and to take him out. This is all that is on my mind right now worrying about how to take him out.

MY: I know you have trained all over the world including in Africa, England and Rhode Island amongst other places. You mentioned that there are differences in New Jersey boxing. What made you realize it is different and how have you adapted?

OD: When I was in Rhode Island, I wasn’t comfortable because I (basically worked out with the same fighters) in the same place. Here I go to different gyms and spar with different people, so it’s like a competition. I have sparred a lot of good fighters so that has made me pick it up.

MY: There is a lot of good competition in the New Jersey area between 154 and 168 lbs. Who are some of the better fighters that you have worked with?

OD: There are a lot of guys. I’ve worked with Danny Jacobs, Yuri Foreman, Omar Sheika, Jerson Ravelo and a lot of other guys such as Momma’s Boy (Denis Douglin) and all these young guys too.

MY: What is your outlook for 2010 and beyond?

OD: I want to get a piece of the cake (make significant money) and become a world champion! Right now I am hungry and everybody is going to see that on the 12th.

Garden State Round up: Farrell Ready for the Contender’s Schneider, Duran and Tapia return February 27!

Cruiserweight Patrick Farrell has dominated thus far as a pro, but knows there is plenty of room for improvement.

His first four opponents were a combined 2-5, giving the Jersey City native an opportunity to develop his skills. However, Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, Farrell is taking a notable step up when he meets Contender Season 4 alum Jon Schneider. Schneider, 7-4-1 (5 KO’s), is far from a world beater, but is expected to give Farrell a solid test in their four round bout on the Tomasz Adamek-Jason Estrada undercard.

“He’s a lefty and I have a couple of fights on tape”, said Farrell, who remembers watching Schneider on The Contender. “He is definitely a tough kid.”

Farrell’s last two bouts took place at North Bergen’s Schuetzen Park, a small venue that holds less than 1,000 people. While many young boxers get butterflies fighting in big arenas, especially one as loud as the Prudential Center, Farrell considers it an advantage.

“The arena is five minutes from my house and I have a lot of fans coming out.” “Boxing is an emotional sport so if anything, (the fan support) just adds motivation”.

Farrell, who has sparred with Adamek to ensure he is in top shape, trains at the Passaic Boxing Club alongside his Pound for Pound Promotions stablemates.

Duran-Davis, Tapia-Miles February 27 in AC!

Ossie Duran is one of the toughest gatekeepers in boxing, but is amongst New Jersey’s least known fighters from a local standpoint. The Ghana native never fought in the Garden State and is well traveled, spending time in England and Rhode Island before relocating to Paterson.

Duran doesn’t have a promoter or the luxury of fighting in his hometown, thus has been used as an opponent for a number of good boxers. Duran’s last four bouts came against contenders James Kirkland, David Lopez, former top ten rated Eromosele Albert and hot prospect Fernando Guerrero, who were a combined 91-14. While he was competitive in all four fights, Duran’s record in those bouts was 0-3-1, with all three defeats coming by razor thin decision.

Duran, who now trains under watchful eye of fellow Paterson native Aroz “Terrific” Gist, surprisingly received an offer to take on Philadelphian Jamal Davis February 27 at Bally’s in Atlantic City. While far from a pushover at 11-5 (6 KO’s), Davis is the least experienced opponent Duran has faced in five years. Even though Davis is not on the same level as his recent opponents, Duran isn’t taking him lightly.
“I train for every fight like it’s a world title fight”, said Duran, a former British Commonwealth Champion”. “I am looking forward to this fight and taking him out because (even with the losses) I am still knocking, so hopefully (a victory will) open doors”.

Duran and Davis meet over six rounds at Junior Middleweight.

Passaic’s Glen Tapia will also appear on the card. Tapia, 3-0 (2 KO’s), had a terrific amateur background and served as one of Joshua Clottey’s main sparring partners leading up to his fight with Miguel Cotto last summer. The junior middleweight was featured on the Cotto-Clottey card at Madison Square Garden, scoring a four round UD over David Lopez (who is unrelated to the David Lopez Duran fought)

Camden’s Tyrone Miles is scheduled to be Tapia’s opponent. Miles is 1-2 as a professional, most recently dropping a close decision to former New Jersey Golden Gloves champion Tyre Roberts. The Tapia-Miles fight is scheduled for four rounds and is also part of the Kendall Holt-Kaizer Mabuza undercard.
