Beltran defeats Moses to win vacant lightweight belt

Ray Beltran won the vacant WBO Lightweight title with a tough 12-round unanimous decision over Paulus Moses at the Grand Sierra Hotel in Reno, Nevada.

It was a grueling contest that saw Moses have some success with hard rights and a nice jab that cut Beltran under both eyes.  Beltran swept the latter part of the fight, and that titlted the scores in his favor to the tune of 117-111 twice and 116-112.

Beltran, 134 1/2 lbs of Phoenix, AZ is now 35-7-2.  Moses, 134 lbs of Namibia is now 40-4.

Egis Kavaliauskas remained undefeated and stopped former interim world titlist David Avanesyan in round six of their scheduled ten round welterweight bout.

Kavaliauskas landed a hard right in round six that hurt Avanesyan.  Kavaliauskas jumped on his prey, and landed a hard flurry of power shots and the fight was stopped.

Kavaliauskas, 146 1/2 lbs of Lithuania is now 19-0 with 16 knockouts.  Avanesyan, 147 lbs of Russia is 23-3.

2016 Olympic Silver Medal winner Shakur Stevenson remained undefeated by winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Juan Tapia in a featherweight bout.

Stevenson, 125 1/2 lbs of Alexandria, VA won all cards 80-72 and is now 5-0.  Tapia, 124 1/2 lbs of Brownsville, TX is 8-2.

In a battle of undefeated lightweights, 2016 Olympic Gold Medal winner Robson Conceicao won a six-round unanimous decision over Ignacio Holguin.

Conceicao, 132 1/2 lbs of Bahia, BRA won by scores of 60-52 on two cards and 60-54 and is now 6-0.  Holguin, 132 3/4 lbs of San Antonio, TX is 4-1-1.

Sagadat Rachmankulov made a successful pro debut by stopping Noel Esqueda in round five of their scheduled six-round welterweight bout.

Rachmankulov hammered Esqueda with a hard left hook and a left to the top of the head that had Esqueda buckling, and referee Jay Nady stopped the bout at 1:51.

Rachmankulov, 148 lbs of Kazakhstan is 1-0 with 1 knockout.  Esqueda, 148 lbs of Wichita, KS is 8-5-2.

Former world title challenger Bryant Jennings dropped Akhror Muralimov four times en roue to a 3rd round stoppage in a scheduled eight-round heavyweight bout.

In round one, Jennings scored two knockdowns. In round two, Jennings dropped Muralimov with a right hand. Jennings dropped Muralimov with a hard right in round three. He finished it off with another knockdown, and the fight was stopped at 1:22.

Jennings of Philadelphia is now 22-2. Muralimov is 16-4.

ALexander Besputin stopped Wesley Tucker at 3:00 of round five of their scheduled eight-round welterweight bout.

Besputin is 9-0. Tucker is 14-2.

Beltran: A famed trainer introduced the fighter and he’s been fighting ever since

By Norm Frauenheim-

Emanuel Steward’s impact on boxing endures long after the famed trainer died. He’s been gone for more than five years now. Yet there are moments when echoes of his voice can still be heard and his influence still seen.

You’ll hear and see it Friday night (ESPN 9 p.m. ET) in Raymundo Beltran.

Steward brought Beltran to the United States, using his influence and celebrity to introduce him and his potential to American media in October 2002. I was there, a reporter for the biggest newspaper in Phoenix, when Steward asked me to say hello to the world’s next great fighter.

“They’re already calling him Sugar, Brown Sugar, in the Phoenix gyms I’ve taken him to,’’ Steward said with the gentle smile that always seemed to be there when he knew he had found somebody special. “Can’t be a Sugar if they don’t think you’re fighter.’’

Steward didn’t project multiple titles or even a legacy for Beltran. But Steward knew there was something there, something within the young man from Mexico that would last.

It has. Beltran has.

His long journey has taken him from a talked-about talent, to a forgotten prospect, to a sparring partner, to a club fighter, to a champion, an ex-champion and a good guy. I’m not sure the last element doesn’t matter the most. Above all, however, Beltran has become somebody a lot like his American mentor. In some capacity, he’ll always be a fighter.

At 36, he steps through the ropes in Reno, Nev., against Paulus Moses (40-3, 25 KOs) for the 43rd time in a bid for the World Boxing Organization’s lightweight title. It’s a fight he calls “the most important” in his career.

On a couple of different levels it probably is. For one, it puts him in line for what could be very good payday. If he wins, there’s talk about a title defense against Felix Verdejo or Vasiliy Lomachenko. Then, there’s the ongoing battle for a green card amid the rancorous immigration debate.

The stakes are huge, of course. They are all part of what motivates Beltran (37-7-1, 21 KOs). They are the components to what a fighter can use. From bell to opening bell, it’s the fuel that keeps him going to the gym, doing his roadwork. But it would just be spilled gas if not for the motor and mentality that keeps Beltran moving forward and in harm’s way.

At a defining level, his whole life is his most important fight. It never ends. In an era when the O is to be protected at all costs, Beltran fights on. There aren’t many fighters today with seven losses who are still active at 36. Name one who is near the top of the game? Beltran is just about the only answer. It’s a craft defined by adversity. Beltran hasn’t exactly embraced it. But he hasn’t run away from it either. Instead, he’s learned from it.

His adopted home continues to be Phoenix. That’s appropriate. The first four fights in his pro career were in Arizona — a debut in Tucson and then three bouts in Phoenix. His headline-grabbing battle to stay in the United States is in many ways a reflection of Ground Zero in the immigration debate. What is now an angry national confrontation began in Phoenix with demonstrations against state legislation, SB 1070. Beltran has seen it. Lives it. Continues to fight it.

In a noteworthy sidebar, his fight in Reno could lead to a noteworthy moment in Phoenix’s long and lively boxing history. If Beltran wins the WBO title Friday and David Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs) retains the World Boxing Council’s super-middleweight title in Showtime-televised rematch against Ronald Gavril (18-2, 14 KOs) at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Saturday night (7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET), it’ll be a first ever that two fighters from Phoenix will hold major belts at the same time.

It almost happened in 1990. Louie Espinoza, now a carpenter in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler, held the WBO’s featherweight title, but lost it to Jorge Paez in a controversial decision in April of that year. Just a few months later in late July eventual Hall of Famer Michael Carbajal won his first junior-flyweight title, the International Boxing Federation’s version, with a seventh-round stoppage of Thailand’s Muangchai Kittikasem.

Who knew that a simple handshake might introduce some Phoenix history some 16 years later? I’ve got a hunch that Emanuel Steward had a pretty good idea. I can hear that voice and see that smile now.

“There isn’t a more inspiring story in boxing than Ray Beltran’s,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “It hasn’t been an easy road for Ray, but he has more than met the challenge time and time again. I can’t think of a better way to start Ray’s 2018 season than with this tremendous world championship fight. I am also looking forward to seeing the welterweight battle between Egidijus Kavaliauskas and David Avanesyan which should be nothing but fireworks. And no one lights up a night better than Shakur Stevenson, with his fast hands and bright smile.”

“I’m excited about this fight for many reasons. I’m fighting for myself, for my eighteen years I have worked to become a world champion, I am fighting for my family, my wife, and for my children to be proud of me,” said Beltran. “When you’re a champion, you are a champion forever. I am fighting for my team, the people who have been with me from the start. It’s easy when you are on your way up to have fans, but my true fans have been with me at my lowest, and stayed through my highs in life. This fight means everything to me, a victory will also seal my green card. For me to be world champion, and a citizen of this country, this is my dream. I respect my opponents always, but this is my destiny, and no man will get in the way of that. I’m ready to prove to everyone that I am the most dangerous lightweight in the world. I’m coming February 16th to take what was mine in Scotland, and when I leave Reno I am leaving as the WBO world champion.”

“I would like to thank God for this amazing opportunity. I have had a blessed boxing career and all thanks to everybody who supported me over the years. Thanks to my Promoter and mentor Nestor Tobias and to an amazing forward looking visionary sponsor in MTC who continues to push us to become only the best,” said Moses. “It’s been an incredibly positive week. I am honoured to have recently been inducted as a MTC Sports Legend, the highest sports honour in Namibia and now an amazing opportunity to fight Beltran who I highly regard, and of course an opportunity for me to become world champion again. I look forward to this fight and doing my country proud once again.”

“I don’t remember much about Avanesyan when we were in the amateurs. But he will, for sure, be my toughest opponent in the ring,” said Kavaliauskas. “I am very excited to show the best of me in this fight. Thank you, Top Rank and ESPN for giving me this opportunity — one step closer to getting a world title belt.”

“I am so glad and proud for the Mean Machine to climb to a new level. Thank you, Top Rank for giving the Machine an opportunity to make his debut on ESPN,” said Egis Klimas, who manages Kavaliauskas.

“This is a great opportunity for me to return to the top of the welterweight division,” said Avanesyan. “My trainer and I are working very hard on my conditioning, strength and strategy because we know what is at stake and we know Egidijus brings to the fight. And make no mistake, this is a fight.”

“I’m ready to kick off 2018 in my first eight-round fight. I’ve been wanting to go eight rounds for awhile now and I’m excited to finally get the opportunity in my first fight of the year.” said Stevenson. “I’m undefeated in Reno and won four national titles there in the amateurs, including the 2016 Olympic Trials, so I plan to keep that streak going on February 16.”

“Grand Sierra Resort is thrilled to host this exciting championship fight card and generate national TV exposure for the Reno-Tahoe region,” Christopher Abraham, VP of Marketing at Grand Sierra Resort said. “We are thrilled to work with such outstanding partners as Top Rank, ESPN and Let’s Get It On Promotions.”

Beltran, a native of Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., enters this fight having won four of his last fights by knockout. A three-time lightweight world title challenger and a former sparring partner of eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. Beltran is fighting for more than just a world title. He is fighting to obtain his green card so that he can remain in the U.S. with his family under the Extraordinary Ability as a Professional Boxing (EB-1) Employment-Based First Preference category.. A world title victory will all but assure him of his permanent status. Recent career highlights include one-punch knockout victories over Mason Menard (32-1, 24 KOs) and Jonathan Maicelo (32-1, 24 KOs) on December 10, 2016 and May 20, 2017, respectively. In his most recent fight, Beltran solidified his upcoming world title shot by winning a gritty majority decision over former two-time interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight world champion Bryan Vasquez (36-2, 19 KOs), on August 5. Vasquez was world-rated No. 1 by the WBA when they fought. Beltran is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBO and the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Moses captured the WBA world lightweight title in 2009, traveling to Yokohama, Japan to defeat defending champion and hometown favorite Yusuke Kobori

via a unanimous decision. After one successful title defense — another unanimous decision victory, this time over Takehiro Shimada, Moses’ 15-monthn reign as world champion ended in 2010 at the hands of Miguel Acosta. Since losing a unanimous decision to Ricky Burns in their 2012 WBO lightweight world championship fight, Moses has strung together an impressive record of 11-1, 1 NC, including TKO victories over Cosmas Cheka and Crispin Moliati in his last two fights and a two-year reign as WBO International lightweight champion and his current 14-month reign as WBO Africa lightweight champion. Moses, a veteran who has fought professionally in Asia, Europe and Africa, will be making his North America debut.

Kavaliauskas, a two-time Lithuanian Olympian and a 2012 World Amateur bronze medalist, has been lighting up the welterweight division. A stablemate of pound for pound superstar and 2017 Fighter of the Year Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomchenko, Kavaliauskas has become a fan favorite for his aggressive style and explosive knockout power. He won all three of his fights in 2017 by knockout, winning the NABF welterweight title in his last fight which took place on September 22. He enters this fight world-rated No. 4 by the WBO.

Avanesyan is no stranger to high pressure fights. The Russian native who trains in the U.K., captured the WBA interim welterweight world title in 2015, via a ninth round TKO of Charlie Navarro. He successfully defended the interim world title once, scoring a unanimous decision over former three-division world champion and future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley. Elevated to world champion by the WBA after the Mosley victory, Avanesyan lost the title on February 18, 2017 to former unified junior welterweight world champion Lamont Peterson. It was a close fight with the momentum shifting back and forth. At the end, Avanesyan lost a close 12-round unanimous decision. Avanesyan retuned to the winner’s circle in his last fight, winning a unanimous decision over Serge Ambomo. He enters this fight world-rated No. 8 by the WBA.

Stevenson begins his sophomore year as a professional graduating to eight round bouts. He ran the table in 2017, winning two of his four fights by knockout, proving his amateur pedigree more than prepared him for the professional ranks.. In the 2016 Summer Games, Stevenson sailed though every stage of his Olympic competition in Rio De Janeiro before losing a close split decision in the bantamweight championship fight to 2012 flyweight Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba. Ramirez swept the judges’ scorecards in round one with Stevenson returning the favor in round two. In the third and final round, the closest of the three rounds, two of the three judges gave the round to Ramirez and the gold medal, by the slimmest of margins. It was the best finish for an American male boxer since Andre Ward captured the gold medal in the Athens Games of 2004. Newark came to a standstill each time Stevenson stepped into the ring in his quest to win Olympic gold. On the day he fought Ramirez, “Stevenson Fever” was at its peak. Barry Carter, columnist for the Star-Ledger, reported the following: “At Broad and Market streets, the city put its ’24 Hour of Peace’ rally on hold and set up a big screen for residents to watch the fight.” At the CityPlex 12 Theater in Newark, hundreds of fans and family members wearing t-shirts emblazoned with “In Shakur’s Corner,” crammed in to see the fight, all sitting on the edge of their seats, to watch the live-streamed fight and cheer for their man.

Ray Beltran to take on Paulus Moses for Lightweight belt on Feb. 16 in Reno

Ray Beltran and Paulus Moses will vie for the WBO Lightweight title on February 16th in Reno, Nevada and televised on ESPN, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

Beltran will also be fighting for a Green card to stay in the United States.

“I believe God has plans for everybody. I believe this is it for me and my team, to become a world champion at this point, not just for me but for all the hard-working people, especially immigrants, who come to this great nation to make their dreams come true, working hard and never giving up,” Beltran said. “I hope my story and my struggle can inspire others to achieve their dreams and to motivate them to never give up.

“I respect my opponents always, but this is my destiny, and no man will get in the way of that. I’m ready to prove to everyone that I am the most dangerous lightweight in the world.”

“I’m coming Feb. 16 to take what was mine in Scotland, and when I leave Reno, I am leaving as the WBO champion,” said Beltran, who spent years as the main sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao.

“I’m excited about this fight for many reasons,” Beltran said. “I’m fighting for myself — for 18 years I have worked to become a world champion. I am fighting for my family, my wife and for my children to be proud of me.

“When you’re a champion, you are a champion forever. I am fighting for my team, the people who have been with me from the start. It’s easy when you are on your way up to have fans, but my true fans have been with me at my lowest and stayed through my highs in life. This fight means everything to me. A victory will also seal my green card. For me to be world champion, and a citizen of this country, this is my dream. ”

“I just hope he comes through,” Arum said. “The other guy, Moses, is a good fighter, and sometimes Ray has great performances, and sometimes he has mediocre performances. But if he could win a world title and I could be there to see it, I would have a lot of pride in the achievement.

“But this is the kind of fight we want to do on our ESPN shows, because it’s a fight where you don’t know who’s going to win. These guys are both good, contending fighters in an even match, and that’s what people want to see. It’s a very tough fight that I think can go either way.”

BELTRAN FINALLY HOPING FOR NIGHT OF GLORY AS HE TAKES ON MOSES FOR WORLD TITLE EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

LONDON (18 January, 2018) – WBO number one ranked lightweight Ray Beltran and number two ranked Paulus Moses are set to do battle for the vacant lightweight world title exclusively live on BoxNation.

The pair will clash on February 16th from the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno for Terry Flanagan’s recently vacated WBO world championship belt as part of BoxNation’s exclusive output deal with promoters Top Rank.

Mexican mauler Beltran will challenge for the world title for the third, and at 36, possibly final time of his career.

A long-time sparring partner of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, Beltran’s first shot at a major title was a disputed draw against Scotland’s Ricky Burns in 2013, with his second seeing him outclassed a year later by pound-for-pound ace Terence Crawford.

Beltran, with a record of 34-7-1, 21 KOs, is fighting for more than just a world title as he looks to apply for permanent residence in the US with a victory proving a huge boost in his application attempts.

However, he is set to face a similarly experienced foe in Namibia’s Moses who will go into the ring with a record of 40-3, with 25 KOs.

The 39-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Hitman’, will be fighting on American soil for the first time and is on a good run of form after going unbeaten in nearly three years.

He is used to travelling having fought around the world in South Africa, Japan, Ukraine and even Scotland when he lost a unanimous points decision after challenging for Burns’ lightweight world title in 2012.

February 16th though is all geared towards Beltran and he will be hoping to finally get his hands on a world title after a tough and long road.

Jim McMunn, BoxNation Managing Director, said: “This is a great opportunity for Ray Beltran to finally become a world champion. He has been unlucky in the past but now exclusively live on BoxNation on February 16th he will get the chance to challenge for Terry Flanagan’s former belt. In boxing it is never easy and Paulus Moses will have big dreams of his own. Both men know what is on the line and will produce a great fight for BoxNation subscribers.”

Bryan Vasquez will face Ray Beltran on Saturday Night under the Roy Jones Jr. Promotions Banner

Las Vegas, NV (August 4, 2017) – Bryan Vasquez will face Ray Beltran on Saturday, August 5th at he Microsoft Theater.

The former featherweight phenom turned instant lightweight top contender Bryan Vasquez (35-2) has an undeniably extensive resume. Bryan has been involved in 9 title fights and maintains an impressive 7-2 record in such affairs.

Vasquez vanquished Jose Gutierrez (11-2-2) just under a decade ago to capture his first WBA Featherweight Title. Then he won 10 straight before acquiring the WBA Super Featherweight strap. Bryan battered Santos Martinez (21-9-3) in that contest via lopsided decision.

A trend was setting for Vasquez when just four months removed from winning his last belt, he would add to his collection. Another blowout decision over a formidable opponent in Alan Herrera (25-2) lead to more gold and a World Title opportunity.

Bryan was almost perfect in his toughest test, losing only a round to Santos Benavides (23-2-2) and won the WBA World Super Featherweight Title. Vasquez would successfully defend the strap by way of 9th round TKO over Jorge Lacierva (41-8-6). It wasn’t until a trip to Japan and his 30th fight that Bryan would taste defeat.

Vasquez would rebound emphatically and recapture the WBA World Super Featherweight title in a technical decision win against Rene Gonzalez (31-5-1). Then Bryan would defend his strap twice, via decision against Jose Felix Jr. (27-0-1) then by way of TKO in the 9th against Sergio Thompson (30-3).

Now Vasquez will move up to challenge for the WBO-NABO Lightweight and NABF Lightweight Title this Saturday Night at The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. He will take on Raymundo Beltran (33-7-1) who is riding a 4 fight KO streak that is resurrecting his career. Beltran has beaten Ivan Najera (16-2) in the 2nd, Miguel Mendoza (23-8-2) in the 5th, Mason Menard (32-1) in the 7th and Jonathan Maicelo (25-2) in the 2nd.

Can Bryan put the breaks on the surging Beltran and add to his collection of championships?

RAY BELTRAN TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (July 27, 2017) — Next week in Los Angeles, three-time world title challenger and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) top-rated lightweight contender RAY “Sugar” BELTRAN will be defending his NABF and NABO lightweight titles against former two-time interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight world champion and current WBA No. 1 contender BRYAN VASQUEZ (36-2, 19 KOs), from San Jose, Costa Rica Beltran (33-7-1, 21 KOs), a native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., was recently named the NABF Fighter of the Year.

Beltran enters this fight having won his last four fights by knockout. A former sparring partner of former eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. with Pepe Reilly. As if risking his world title shot isn’t enough pressure, every fight he wins gets him one step closer to a precious green card via the “extraordinary athlete” status needed to qualify for the EB-1 green card typically available to certain sportspeople, entertainers, and masters of the arts and sciences. Recently, he has been in the U.S. under an athletic visa.

RAY BELTRAN QUOTES

“The plan is to knockout Vasquez. That is the goal I want to achieve to be able to get the big fight. I want to give the fans another impressive victory and make it clear that I am a world-class fighter.

“I feel very motivated. To get my green card is as important or more important than winning a world title. This is not just about myself, this is also about the future of my family.

“To fight on ESPN is a dream come true. In the past, all the big fights were shown on ESPN and now history its repeating itself. Now everyone will have access to world-class fights.”

The four gladiators boast a combined professional record of 102-12-1 (67 KOs).

Both title fights will be televised live and exclusively at 10 p.m. EDT on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and stream live on the ESPN app.

Tickets to the Lomachenko vs. Marriaga / Beltran vs. Vasquez championship event will go on sale Tomorrow! Thursday, July 13, at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT. Priced at $130, $105, $80, $55 and $30, tickets may be purchased at microsofttheater.com, AXS.com, by phone at 888-929-7849 or at the STAPLES Center Box Office.

“Vasyl Lomachenko is the best fighter in boxing and Ray Beltran is the best story in boxing,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Both are in tough against Miguel Marriaga and Bryan Vasquez, who also have lots of world championship fight experience It’s going to be an exciting show for the fans at Microsoft Theater or watching on ESPN.”

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring on August 5th,” said Lomachenko. “I respect all of my opponents who are willing to step in ring with me and I will be at my best to show the boxing fans what boxing is all about it.”

“Thanks to our promoter Top Rank for bringing Vasily back to the ring so quickly after his great performance in April,” said Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager. “There is not much to say when Lomachenko steps into the ring. The way Vasily boxes is not unlike a symphony orchestra where all instruments are played beautifully. He is the best and most entertaining boxer.. I am looking forward to seeing him fight again on August 5th”

“I have respect but no fear of Lomachenko and I cannot wait to fight for his world title,” said Marriaga. “Fighting Lomachenko on ESPN opens the door for my present and for my future . I’m training very hard in Mexico City and I’ll be ready on August 5. I’m going to give him a real fight.”

“I’m excited to fight on ESPN because so many people will be able to see me. It reminds me of the old days when the best fights were on ESPN so it’s cool that Top Rank and ESPN are doing these shows together,” said Beltran. “As for my fight I always respect my opponent, but I’ve knocked out the past five and they had my respect as well. I expect Vasquez to come to fight, but I have a bigger goal to be a world champion, so August 5th is part of that journey and I will not let Vasquez or anyone get in the way of my goal. I’m sure Vasquez and I will make it a great fight for the fans.”

“Ray is as focused as ever on the big prize, a world title shot against Terry Flanagan, Mikey Garcia or Jorge Linares,” said Steve Feder, Beltran’s manager. “But Vasquez is a tough competitor and so we aren’t thinking past this fight just yet. We know it could go the distance, winning is all that matters. Ray’s on a mission, he’s ranked No. 2 breathing down the necks of the champions and was just named NABF Fighter of the Year. He’s feeling it. This is his turf and his ring and he’s determined to protect it. We are filing for the green card as we speak. This is Ray’s year in and out of the ring. Fighting on ESPN is a chance for Ray to get the exposure he’s been waiting for.”

“I think Ray Beltran is a great fighter, motivated and skilled. In one word to describe him in the ring, he’s an animal,” said Vasquez. This fight means a lot for me, fighting for my two idols Chiquita Gonzalez and Roy Jones Jr. who promotes me. Beltran is going to be the toughest fighter I have ever faced. The game plan to is be smarter than him. Speed? How can you use speed against a fighter who sparred with Pacquiao his entire career? We are going to have to be smarter since I am moving up to Beltran’s weight class but I am confident I am the better fighter — faster, smarter, more skilled.”

“Ray Beltran is a very powerful fighter and I really do believe if Bryan outboxes him then Bryan will be victorious,” said Roy Jones Jr., Vasquez’s promoter and a former four-division world champion. “Bryan needs to be smarter than Beltran and not let Beltran dictate how the fight goes. Boxing needs two warriors and Bryan and Beltran are exactly what people have been waiting for. Once victorious, this will re-introduce Bryan Vasquez to the champion circle.”

Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs), of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine, who has won his last five fights by knockout, returns to a Los Angeles ring for the first time in over three years, making his second world title defense of 2017. In Lomachenko’s previous Los Angeles area fight, which took place on June 21, 2014, at StubHub Center, Lomachenko captured his first world title — the vacant WBO featherweight title — winning a scintillating majority decision over the previously unbeaten and future world champion Gary Russell Jr. It remains the only blemish on Russell’s record. It was Lomachenko’s third professional bout, tying him with Thailand’s Saensak Muangsurin for fewest fights to win a world title. Muangsurin won a junior welterweight title in 1975, also in his third professional fight. Lomachenko successfully defend that title three times during his reign before vacating it to challenge three-time WBO junior lightweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez on June 11, 2016. The Martinez victory, via a cringe-worthy one-punch knockout in the fifth round, not only made Lomachenko a two-division world champion, but he once again he broke a record doing it, winning world title No. 2 in a record least amount of fights — SEVEN. He followed that with his first defense of the WBO junior lightweight title, on Nov. 26, totally dominating Nicholas Walters. The previously undefeated former WBA featherweight world champion quit on his stool after the seventh round with his trainer and father Jobs Walters, telling referee Tony Weeks, ‘”No mas.” Not only was it a total domination but a boxing masterpiece painted on the canvas by Lomachenko. It concluded a year that had many media outlets declaring Lomachenko the “Fighter of the Year.” In his last fight, on April 8, he stopped former WBA super featherweight world champion Jason “El Canito” Sosa in the ninth round. It was the second most viewed fight on premium cable for 2017. The greatest amateur boxer of his era and arguably of all time, Lomachenko first gained international renown by winning gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Games as a featherweight and a lightweight, respectively. He retired from the amateurs with a 396-1 record.

Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs), from Arjona, Colombia, enters this fight having won 15 of his previous 20 fights by way of knockout. The only blemishes on his record, 12-round unanimous decision world title losses to WBO featherweight champion Óscar Valdez, in a ferocious battle on April 22, and former WBA featherweight world champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters in 2015. Between those two world championship battles, Marriaga fashioned a five-bout winning streak, which included NABO featherweight title knockout victories against Guy Robb and Eduardo Montoya in 2016 to become the WBO’s No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger to Valdez. In his challenge of world champion Valdez, Marriaga went toe-to-toe throughout the fight in a ring war fight fans are still talking about nearly three months later.

Beltran (33-7-1, 21 KOs), a native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., was recently named the NABF Fighter of the Year. He enters this fight having won his last four fights by knockout. A two-time lightweight world title challenger and a former sparring partner of former eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. with Pepe Reilly. In his last fight, in the co-main event to the Terence Crawford – Félix Díaz world title fight on May 20, Beltran scored a sensational one-punch second-round knockout of Top-10 contender Jonathan Maicelo in a world lightweight title elimination bout that also had him retaining his NABF and NABO lightweight titles as well as claiming the vacant WBA International championship belt. It was also a fight that captured the nation’s attention because not only was Beltran fighting for another world title shot but also a new life for himself and his family. Winning his fight against Maicelo may prove to be the deciding factor in getting a green card via the “extraordinary athlete” status needed to qualify for the EB-1 green card typically available to certain sportspeople, entertainers, and masters of the arts and sciences. Recently, he has been in the U.S. under an athletic visa, but risked deportation when that document expired. It was story told by USA Today and followed by NBC News before the fight on “Today” and after on the “NBC Nightly News.” Beltran is currently world-rated No. 2 by the WBO, the World Boxing Council (WBC).and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Vasquez (36-2, 19 KOs), from San Jose, Costa Rica, is a former two-time WBA interim super featherweight world champion. His professional resume features victories over Santos Benavides, Jorge Lacierva, René González, Jose Felix, Jr. and Sergio Thompson. He won the WBA interim super featherweight title in 2011, winning a dominant unanimous decision over Benavides. He successfully defended the title the following year via a ninth-round TKO over Lacierva. Later that same year, he unsuccessfully challenged defending WBA super featherweight world champion Takashi Uchiyama losing by an eighth-round TKO. Vasquez recaptured the WBA interim super featherweight title the following year winning a five-round technical decision over González. Vasquez successfully defended the title once in 2014, during his one-year reign, scoring a 12-round unanimous decision over then-undefeated contender Felix. In 2015 he once again challenged for a world title, losing a unanimous decision to undefeated Javier Fortuna. for the vacant WBA super featherweight title. He successfully made his debut as a lightweight last summer, scoring a second-round TKO of Thompson. He is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBA.

“Bud” Batters Diaz, Retains super Lightweight Titles

NEW YORK CITY -Inside the main arena at Madison Square Garden, Terence “Bud” Crawford proved why he’s king of the lightweight mountain.  For ten consecutive rounds, Omaha’s favorite son delivered a thorough beating to former Olympic Gold Medalist, Felix Diaz.  At the end of the tenth, Diaz’s trainer Joel Diaz, intervened and stopped the contest, resulting in a TKO victory for Crawford.

In the early goings it looked like Diaz might have some success.  He threw his punches from odd angles and occasionally planted leather on flesh.  Toward the end of round two, Diaz landed what was perhaps his best punch of the night, a looping right that caught Crawford clean and drew a buzz from the crowd.

But by the third round, Crawford started to settle into a groove.  “Bud” used his jab to keep his smaller opponent at bay, then continually unleashed straight lefts that seemingly always found their mark.

By the fourth, Crawford started to really slow the Diaz train down.  The awkwardly thrown punches from the Dominican began to land less frequently, with less effectiveness.  The middle rounds were becoming increasingly lopsided in favor of “Bud”.

Left crosses, straight lefts, left uppercuts.  They all seemingly landed at will.

To make matters worse for Diaz, not only was he getting tagged from distance, but each time he tried to get inside Crawford’s reach, the champion repeatedly punished Diaz with lefts.

Early in the 7th, the iron-chinned Dominican ate a vicious one-two that snapped his neck in two directions.  Diaz responded by bull-rushing the champ, throwing wild punches, and momentarily turning the fight into a street brawl.

To his credit, until the fight was waved off, Diaz was willing to risk being KO’d in an attempt to land anything of significance.

But it wasn’t Diaz’s night.  It was never going to be.  Crawford continued to put on a clinic for the next three rounds and at the end of the tenth, Joel Diaz decided his fighter would not take part in the championship rounds; he would take no further punishment.

Crawford retained his WBO and WBC Super Lightweight titles and when asked by Max Kellerman who he’d like to face next, “Bud” answered with one name.  “Pacquiao.”

Crawford’s perfect record remains and now reads 31-0, 22KO.  Diaz suffers his second professional defeat and drops to 19-2, 9KO.

Beltran One-Punch Kayos Maicelo, Stuns Garden Crowd

With one left hook, Raymundo Beltran single fistedly sucked the air out of Madison Square Garden.

Midway through the second round of his lightweight bout against Peruvian Jonathan Maicelo, Beltran fired a murderous looping left that generated from his hip and exploded on Maicelo’s chin.  The punch knocked Maicelo cold and silenced the rambunctious Peruvian crowd.

HBO’s televised co-feature began with a wild first round that saw Maicelo send the Meixcan-born Arizona resident Beltran to the canvas courtesy of a darting headbutt.  Referee David Fields missed the headbutt and administered a ten count to Beltran.  The clash of heads resulted in a cut over Beltran’s left eye and a gash on the top of Maicelo’s head.  The end of the round concluded with a fiery exchange that finished with Beltran besting Maicelo, who slowly walked back to his corner.

In the second round, Maicelo gained momentum, feeding off the pro-Peruvian crowd.  Maicelo seemed to be in control of the second round when seemingly out of nowhere Beltran connected with a jaw-shattering left that ended the fight on impact.  The official time of stoppage was 1:25 of the second round.

According to Beltran’s lawyers, a win for him tonight meant that he would likely be able to secure his Green Card.

On the importance of his win tonight, Beltran said, “[It provides] Hope for my family.  For a better future.”

Beltran moves to 32-7-1 21KOs, while Maicelo suffers his third professional defeat and his record now stands at 25-3, 13KOs.

Brick City Bomber: Stevenson Scores First Round KO

In his second professional fight, former Olympic Silver Medalist Shakur Stevenson scored a first round TKO victory over fellow featherweight, Carlos Suarez of Argentina.  Newark’s Stevenson found his range immediately, connecting with short right hooks and straight lefts that clearly demonstrated his power.

In the third stanza of the opening round, Stevenson unleashed a barrage of punches that concluded with a left hook to the chin that sent Suarez tumbling forward until his stomach lay flat on the mat.  While the ten count was being administered by referee Arthur Mercante Jr., Suarez attempted to get to his knees, but stumbled backwards.  At that time, the 2:35 mark of the first round, Mercante decided to call a stop to the contest.

“I hit him with a straight left to the chin. That’s my money punch,” Stevenson said after the fight.   “I only wish this fight could have gone longer for my fans here.”

The perfect start to Stevenson’s pro career continues as he improves to 2-0, 2KO. Suarez’s resume now reads 6-4-2, 1 KO

Tong Hui Cruises Past Calzada

Chinese super welterweight Li Tong Hui easily outpointed veteran Daniel Calzada to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Round after round Tong Hui peppered Calzada with lefts and rights born from all angles, hardly taking any punches in return.  To his credit, Calzada, a fighter with more than 160 professional rounds in his rearview, took Hui’s punches well and never stopped trying to land something significant.

In the end, it was all Tong Hui, though.  All three judges scored the fight a shutout for the man from China, 60-54.

Tong Hui improves his record to 9-1, 6KO, while Calzada’s record now reads 14-17-3, 2KO

Lopez Knocks Rivas Out Cold

In a lightweight matchup slated for six rounds, Brooklyn-born Honduran Olympian, Teofimo Lopez, scored a scary one-punch KO victory against Ronald Rivas.  The definitive punch came courtesy of a counter left hook that exploded on Rivas chin.  The punch immediately collapsed shut down Rivas system, and collapsed him to the canvas.  Clearly out cold upon impact, referee Arthur Mercante Jr. wasted no time in calling a halt to the contest.  The official time of the stoppage came at 2:21 of the second round.

Lopez keeps both his undefeated and knockout streak intact and now boasts a professional record of 5-0, 5KOs.  Rivas drops below the .500 mark to 5-6-2, 3KO.

Ponomarev Remains Unbeaten With UD Victory

In an eight round battle between two veteran super welterweights, Abel Sanchez-trained and regular Triple G sparring partner, Konstantin Ponomarev, scored a hard-earned unanimous decision victory over Ed Paredes.

Ponomarev started slow and initially kept his distance, but as the fight progressed began to wear down and impose his will on Paredes.

In the sixth round, Ponomarev seemed to stun Paredes with a straight right and kept the pressure on, stalking his injured opponent and connecting with more clean shots.  Just when it felt like Ponomarev was about to pump up the pressure even more, Paredes landed a clean left counter-hook, stopping the Russian in his tracks and thwarting his attack.

In the eighth and final round, Paredes landed his most successful shots of the match, courtesy of two straight rights.  Before the final bell sounded, Ponomarov answered those punches with vicious rights of his own, one of which momentarily wobbled Paredes.

At the end of eight, all three judges scored the bout 78-72 in favor of the Russian.

In fairness to Paredes, the wide scorecards don’t accurately reflect the closeness in which some rounds were fought.  15rounds.com scored the bout 79-73, Ponomarov, but noted four close rounds, three of which were given to Ponomarov.

With the win, the Ponomarev runs his already impressive record up to 32-0, 13KO, while Parades drops 37-7-1, 24KO.

Uzbekistan’s Olympic Hero Stays Perfect

Former Rio Olympic Gold Medalist, Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, battered Massachusett’s Agustine Mauras around the ring, three minutes at a time, for eight rounds.  In front of about fifty or so fellow Uzbekistanis cheering on their fighter, the super lightweight showcased his superior skills, rhythmically landing one punch at a time before slipping away from anything Mauras would attempt to land.

It was a near flawless performance for the southpaw as he fought nearly every minute of every round on his terms.  Perhaps the only knock against him would be that he seemed to lack a killer instinct.  Gaibnazarov was content to hit and move — which works, no question — but rarely did the ex-Olympian piece together effective combinations, save for two in the opening moments of the final round.

At the end of eight rounds, all three judges scored the bout a shutout in favor of Gaibnazarov, 80-72.

Gaibnazarov’s professional record now reads 2-0, 2KO, while the hard-nosed Maraus’ record falls to 6-3-3, 3KO.

Lebron Dominates Estrada – Scores A Second Round TKO Stoppage

In a contest slated for four rounds, Puerto Rican super featherweight Henry Lebron scored an impressive TKO victory over New Mexico’s Johnny Estrada.  After dominating the first five minutes of the match, Lebron landed a perfectly thrown left that knocked Estrada out on his feet.  Lebron instinctively followed up and connected with a straight right that would have sent Estrada to the mat if not for referee Arthur Mercante Jr.’s intervention to keep the flailing fighter upright. The fight was stopped at the :52 mark of the second round.

Lebron stays perfect with the win, moving to 2-0, 2KO, while Estrada drops to 0-2.

Nelson Makes Quick Work Of Rubio

In a light heavyweight contest slated for six rounds, the night’s opening bout saw Terence Crawford stablemate Steven Nelson make quick work of his Mexican counterpart, Gilberto Rubio.  In just under four minutes, Nelson sent Rubio to the canvas three time en route to a second round TKO victory.

The first knockdown came courtesy of a left-hook, right-uppercut combo as the round neared conclusion.  In the second round, Nelson dug two meaty left hooks to Rubio’s liver, forcing him to a knee each time — the second of which resulted in referee Shawn Clark calling a halt to the contest at the :36 mark of the second round.

Nelson continues his ascent in the light heavyweight division and improves his record to 7-0, 6KOs. The Mexican, Rubio, sees his record drop to 7-6, 5 KOs.

We are coming to fight and give a great show to all the fans. I don’t just want to win. I want to look good and win convincingly. Little by little I am making my dreams come true. I have battled a lot in my career. We have fulfilled many of our goals, like now that we are going to fight at Madison Square Garden. Being able to fight in a historical place, where all the greats have fought, is a dream come true.”

“This is a very important fight for my career. This fight means everything to me because I will be able to display my skills in front of a big audience and on a big stage like Madison Square Garden,” said Maicelo. “Right now I’m at my best and on May 20 everyone will see the best of me. I’m working very hard in the gym because everyone knows that Beltran is a tough fighter, but I’m focused on winning because this is a world title elimination bout that will take me straight to the opportunity of fighting for a world title.”

Beltran (32-7-1, 20 KOs), a native of Ahome, Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., enters this fight having won his last three fights by knockout. A two-time lightweight world title challenger and a former sparring partner of eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. In his last fight, in the co-main event to the Crawford John Molina Jr. world title fight on December 10, Crawford scored a sensational one-punch seventh-round knockout of once-beaten Mason Menard in an NABF-NABO lightweight title fight. Beltran is currently world-rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 3 by the IBF and No. 4 by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Maicelo (25-2, 12 KOs), a native of Callao, Peru who fights out of North Bergen, New Jersey, is riding a two-year four-bout winning streak. His most impressive victory was his in his last fight, against Jose Felix, Jr. on February 17. Felix, who entered the fight with a 35-1-1 record and world-rated No. 3 by the WBO, was knocked down five times by Maicelo. Maicelo’s upset unanimous decision victory over Felix has propelled him to No. 7 in the IBF.

JOE PARKER AND ANDY RUIZ FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (December, 8, 2016) – Undefeated heavyweight contenders JOE PARKER (21-0, 18 KOs), of Auckland, and ANDY RUIZ, JR. (29-0, 19 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, world-rated No. 1 and No. 3 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) respectively, will be battling for the vacant WBO heavyweight world title on Saturday. The fight will be televised in the U.S. on a same-day delay opening the HBO World Championship Boxing® telecast at 9:35 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the live telecast from CenturyLink Center Omaha, featuring the 10-round NABF/NABO lightweight championship fight between Top-10 contenders RAY BELTRAN (31-7-1, 19 KOs), of Phoenix, AZ, and MASON MANARD (32-1, 24 KOs), of Rayne, LA, and the Main Event, undefeated WBO/ World Boxing Council (WBC) / Ring magazine junior welterweight champion TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD (29-0, 20 KOs), of Omaha, Neb., defending his titles against No. 1 contender JOHN MOLINA JR. (29-6, 23 KOs), of Covin, Calif. This will be Crawford’s first defense of his unified titles and his third televised world chmpionhip fight of 2016.

Below are the comments from Parker, Ruiz and their teams from their final press conference, as reported by intrepid publicist Ed “Kiwi” Keenan, who is on the scene.

BOB ARUM:

Bob, who would you put your money on?
“I don’t put money on fights. I do give Andy a great chance to win this fight. I always tell people, the best way to lose money is to bet on a fight.

“Andy is in sensational shape for this fight.

“Andy has the fastest hands in a heavyweight that I have seen since Muhammad Ali. And he really stands in there and takes the fight to his opponent. The winner of this fight will be the preeminent heavyweight.

“The competition in the heavyweight division will be great in the years to come and these two will lead it. Ruiz and Parker will help make the heavyweight division the premier division in boxing.

“We’re celebrating my (85th) birthday here in New Zealand on December 8, which really isn’t my birthday because back home where I was born it will be December 7.”

BRUCE TRAMPLER:

“This is a historic fight and if I wanted two trainers for a fight I would pick these two – Abel Sanchez (Ruiz) and Kevin Barry (Parker). It’s the perfect storm these two fighting. I can’t imagine a better matchup. Two athletic hard-fighting guys that won’t take a step back. There are two two-weight classes in boxing – the heavyweights and then everyone else.”

ABEL SANCHEZ:

“We have two guys here that are the future of the heavyweight division. They will show us the way heavyweights are supposed to fight like. I am on a streak but that was Russia and this is New Zealand so we have to start a new streak.

“Kevin is an old fashioned kind of trainer like I am. I don’t have strength and conditioning coaches or nutritionists, I do it all myself

“Andy lost 35 pounds and it wasn’t plastics or diet. We ran a gym that made him work hard. And he lost the weight a little bit at a time. The guys in my camp weigh in every day, and they each need to be at same weight or less than they were the day before. So I can tell when they are cheating – eventually it catches up to them.

‘There are 68 world champions out there and all of their coaches are geniuses.

“Key improvements are up here (pointing to his head). He has skills already. My job is to get him mentally prepared to fight.

“Can he stay away from Joe’s jab? “Can Joe stay away from Andy’s jabs, and combinations?”

“The guy that can impose his will to win. Andy is very confident. The game plan will come after imposing his will.

:”There are different ways to lose weight. When you lose the weight you become a sharper puncher. You may lose a little power but gain sharpness.

“Heavy work was don in camp – right now we just wait for the fight. These two guys could fight tomorrow if they needed to.

“We sparred eight 4-minute rounds every day that was the hard part and Andy did 11 the day before I left for Russia. Andy is in the best shape of his life.

“I think Saturday is a tough 12-round fight. We are going to have a fight where they hurt each other. Heavyweights recently have been wrestling. This is going to be a real fight. I know I am going to have to work a full 12 rounds also as well as I know Kevin will too.

“They have treated us great in New Zealand. The people on the streets have been coming up and wishing Andy good luck, even though they aren’t on Andy’s side.”

KEVIN BARRY:

“This is a great fight. This is the best heavyweight fight of the year. They both have a chance to make history here. Joseph is a very confident boxer and that rubs off on a fighter. The crowd will be behind Joseph and that will lift Joseph to new heights. Joe understands the power he has and it will give him the drive and determination that will carry him.”

ANDY RUIZ

“This is my chance and I didn’t come all the way to New Zealand to lose. I know everyone is underestimating me. I know I trained hard for this fight. I hear everyone commenting on how I look physically, but imagine now that I am in great shape, how good I will be on Saturday night. I know I am an exciting fighter – I will use lots of footwork and throw a lot of combinations – and we both hit hard.

Does Parker have more pressure on him since he’s fighting at home?
“Both of us have pressure. I don’t know what Parker thinks about how much pressure he has on him, but I hope he feels like he has more pressure. I am confident in the work that I have done in training.”

“I know we are both prepped for 12 rounds. I don’t talk a lot of trash or anything. But when the bell rings we both flip the switch. I have a family to feed and I fight for them.

“This is a great opportunity for me and I’m not leaving New Zealand without that belt.”

JOSEPH PARKER

“There are two nights to go until the fight and I am very excited for the fight and excited to have it in New Zealand. We are not underestimating Andy Ruiz. We know he is in great shape. We both know that we are in great shape and we each know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

“Yes, we did spar together. I was in Las Vegas and new to the sport. I went in to spar with him [Ruiz] and thought it would be easy because of his size but when we were sparring he hit me pretty good and he chased me out of the ring and now I have to get him back for that. He’s coming to my backyard. I have to defend my country’s honor.

“We use the same routine for this fight as all the others – it is the one that has always worked.

“I will use the support in the building to motivate me and that will drive me throughout the fight.

“Andy wants to take the belt back with him and I want to keep it here. I want to go out there and win this and win it well.

“I know Andy is a nice guy and there is no hate between us. But when the bell rings on Saturday night we flip the switch and we will each be trying to knock the other guy out.”

ANDY RUIZ JR. is seen SATURDAY, DEC. 10 at 9:35 p.m. (live ET/ tape-delayed PT) from CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. and Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on HBO. The HBO Sports broadcasting team will call the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Other HBO playdates: Dec. 11 (8:50 a.m.) and 12 (12:45 a.m.)

HBO2 playdate: Dec. 11 (3:40 p.m.) and 13 (midnight)

Omaha native Terence “Bud” Crawford (29-0, 20 KOs), 2014’s Fighter of the Year, defends his junior welterweight title for the third time in 2016 before enthusiastic hometown supporters when he meets John Molina Jr. (29-6, 23 KOs) of Covina, Cal. in a 12-round bout.

The 29-year-old Crawford enjoyed an impressive 2015 with knockout victories against top 140-pound contenders Thomas Dulorme and Dierry Jean. Known for speed, precision, defense and power, he defeated Hank Lundy last February and returned to the ring in July to score a dominating victory over the highly regarded, undefeated Viktor Postol in a junior welterweight unification title bout that had the boxing community buzzing. Unafraid of trading blows at close range, Crawford has won four of his last six bouts by thrilling stoppages.

The Omaha showdown marks the third time HBO Sports has traveled to the city for a Crawford fight and is his ninth live fight on HBO.

Molina Jr. is a hard-hitting, high-pressure brawler who challenged for a world title in 2012, and returns to the ring after a career-best upset of heavily favored former junior welterweight champ Ruslan Provodnikov in June. Using skills not seen in previous fights, Molina won a unanimous decision while skyrocketing up the rankings, with some organizations now rating him as high as number one in the world.

The evening’s co-feature is ten-round lightweight battle between two rugged veterans eager to compete for a title shot in 2017. Raymundo Beltran (31-7-1, 19 KOs), a native of Mexico now living in Phoenix, will square off with Mason Menard (32-1, 24 KOs) of Rayne, La. in a crossroads fight for both competitors. Since losing a unanimous decision to Terence Crawford in 2014, Beltran, 35, has notched two impressive knockout wins, while Menard, 28, has also defeated his last three opponents via knockout.

Opening the tripleheader is a world heavyweight title bout from Auckland, New Zealand between hometown favorite Joseph Parker (21-0, 18 KOs), 24, and Mexico’s Andy Ruiz (29-0, 19 KOs), 27, in a 12-round affair. Presented on same-day delay, the fight marks the first world title shot for two fast-rising undefeated competitors, both of whom aim to become their country’s first world heavyweight titleholder.

On the Verge of Boxing Stardom, Menard Ready for Tough Challenge Against Beltran

Rayne, Louisiana’s “Rock Hard Mighty” Mason Menard (32-1, 24 KOs) knows he’s in for a tough challenge when he makes the first defense of his WBO NABO Lightweight Championship against fellow top-10 contender Ray Beltran (31-7-1, 19 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, December 10, at CenturyLink Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

The 10-round Menard vs. Beltran lightweight showdown will serve as the middle bout of an HBO World Championship Boxing tripleheader (9:35 p.m. ET/PT) that will open with the same-day delay telecast of the Joseph Parker vs. Andy Ruiz, Jr. WBO heavyweight championship in New Zealand.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with TGB Promotions, the exciting event will be headlined by undefeated World Junior Welterweight Champion and top-rated pound-for-pound fighter TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD (29-0, 20 KOs), of Omaha, Neb., making the first defense of his unified World Boxing Organization (WBO) / World Boxing Council (WBC) /Ring magazine 140-pound world titles against one-time world title challenger and current No. 1 contender
JOHN MOLINA JR. (29-6, 23 KOs), from Covina, Calif.

Remaining reserved seat tickets to the Crawford – Molina world championship event, priced at $27, $52, $77 and $127, can be purchased at the CenturyLink Center Omaha box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. To charge-by-phone call (800) 745-3000. To order online, visit ticketmaster.com.

“I know Beltran has been around a long time and he’s fought at the top level many times. He is very tough and I know he will bring it,” said Menard.

The 28-year-old Menard punched his way into world contention this year with a pair of high-profile knockouts. In April of this year, he scored one for the highlight reels by starching formerly undefeated Eudy Bernardo with one punch in round three. Video HERE.

Then in August, he returned with another KO, this time against well-regarded Uzbekistani Bahodir Mamadjonov in the ninth round. Video HERE.

“2016 has been a great year for me,” he continued. “I’ve had two consecutive KO’s on national television and one is a candidate for ‘Knockout of the Year.’ I also won an award from the WBO in Puerto Rico. Now this fight has fallen into my lap and I will make the best of this opportunity.”

Another impressive victory for Menard would land him in world title contention… a fact not lost on the excited slugger. “Landing this fight is big for me and my career. A win here should put me in position to fight for a world title next. It should open doors me and make me a serious contender in the lightweight division.”

Menard is taking this tough challenge on relatively short notice, but says he’s in great shape and will be fully prepared for battle on December 10. “Yes, I am ready. I was already training to fight December 15. It’s now or never. I believe God has blessed me with this fight because I’ve been praying for a big one to get me to the next level.”

The Menard vs. Beltran bout is presented by Top Rank in association with Greg Cohen Promotions. The CenturyLink Center Omaha is located at455 North 10th Street in Omaha, Nebraska.

Humberto Soto injures knee; fight with Felix off

humberto-soto
Just a day after getting Jose Felix as a replacement foe for Ray Beltran. Humberto Soto injured his knee and his June 27 fight on the Timothy Bradley – Jessie Vargas undercard is off, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Soto is not going to fight,” said Golden Boy Promotions Eric Gomez. “He messed up his knee jogging on Tuesday. He was training. He got X-rays and he has strained knee ligaments, and the doctor told him he needs to rest it for a month.”

“It’s shocking. This guy can’t catch a break,” Eric Gomez said of Soto. “First, there was the Frankie Gomez situation, then Ray Beltran and now this. When bad news happens, it comes in threes. It was like 1-2-3 strikes, you’re out.”

Beltran tests positive for banned substance; fight with Soto off

April 27, 2013 Austin, TX - Frank Erwin CenterUniMas TV
Ray Beltran tested positive for a banned substance after his May 1 knockout win over Takahiro Ao and his June 27 bout with Humberto Soto is off, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Just disappointed. I’m disappointed for Beltran and I’m disappointed for us, but eventually fighters are going to learn not to try to cheat the system,” Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, Beltran’s promoter, told ESPN.com. “I feel worse about it that it happened to [Ao promoter] Mr. [Akihiko] Honda and our friends from Teiken Boxing and that their fighter, Ao, was hurt by all this.”

“I talked to Ray and he doesn’t think he took anything illegal,” Cameron Dunkin, Beltran’s manager, told ESPN.com. “I asked him if he had been taking any pills and he said he took some supplements he was given by his guys, but he didn’t think they had anything [illegal] in them. I’m getting a list of what he was taking.

“He’s devastated about the Soto fight. Who wouldn’t be? He feels betrayed by somebody who was working with him, but he doesn’t know by who. He has three different guys who work with him but somebody really let him down. Someone didn’t look out for him. This is terrible. There’s nothing else to say.”

BoxingScene first reported the positive test

Moretti said one possible opponent is Jose Felix Jr. (29-1-1, 24 KOs), 23, of Mexico, a Top Rank boxer who is training for a June 13 UniMas-televised bout, but has no opponent yet.

HBO said it plans to keep Soto on the telecast. It is the second fight in a month that has been canceled on Soto, through no fault of his own. The reason HBO found a spot for him on June 27 was because his fight against Frankie Gomez on May 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston — the co-feature of Canelo Alvarez-James Kirkland — was canceled the day before the bout because Gomez was 6½ pounds overweight at the weigh-in, which cost Soto a low six-figure payday.

Beltran to take on Soto on Bradley – Vargas undercard

April 27, 2013 Austin, TX - Frank Erwin CenterUniMas TV
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former world champions Ray Beltran and Humberto Soto will meet on June 27 as part of the Timothy Bradley – Jessie Vargas undercard at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

“Adding this slugfest to the much anticipated slugfest between Bradley and Vargas just ensures another memorable night of prizefighting at the highest level at the StubHub Center,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told ESPN.com. “Those in attendance and watching at home on HBO are in for a special night with major implications for those combatants.”

“We’re excited about the fight. It should be a fun fight. Both guys are exciting fighters,” said Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez, who negotiated the bout with Moretti. “Peter Nelson took it upon himself to tell Soto they would have him back on after what happened with Frankie. We really appreciate it. He kept his word. He is doing the right thing here. Peter stepped up and said he’d get him back on the network, and he did it with what we think is going to be a great fight. Humberto Soto is going to make a war.”

Beltran destroys Ao in 2

April 27, 2013 Austin, TX - Frank Erwin CenterUniMas TV
It was bitter sweet for Ray Beltran as he scored a 2nd round stoppage over former two-time world champion Takahiro Ao in a Lightweight bout at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

In round two, Beltran landed a crushing right that sent Ao to the canvas. Beltran jumped on Ao and landed vicious power shots with both hands and referee Tony Weeks stopped the bout at 1:29 of round two.

The bout was for the vacant WBO Lightweight title but Beltran weighed in over the 135 pound limit at Thursday’s weigh in therefore Ao was only eligible to win the title.

Beltran, 135.4 lbs of Los Moschis, MX is now 30-7-1 with 18 knockouts. AO, 134 3/4 lbs of Tokyo, Japan is now 27-4-1.

Konstantin Ponomarev scored a 10-round unanimous decision over Mikael Zewski and in the process won the NABF Welterweight title in a battle of undefeated Welterweights.

Zewski’s left eye started to swell in round four.

Ponomarev, 146.6 lbs of Russia won by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 and is now 28-0. Zewski, 146.8 lbs of Quebec, Canada is 26-1.

Vic Pasillas remained undefeated by scoring a 4-round unanimous decision over Marcello Gallardo in a Featherweight bout

Pasillas, 122.8 lbs of East Los Angeles, CA won by scores of 40-36 on all cards and is now 10-0. Gallardo, 123.8 lbs of Renton, WA is now 5-2-2.

Beltran misses weight; cant win title

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com. Ray Beltran missed weight by .4 pounds for his Friday showdown against Takahiro Ao in Las Vegas.

Beltran can not win WBO Lightweight title.

Ao (27-3-1, 12 KOs), from Chiba, Japan, captured his first world title in 2009, dethroning Oscar Larios to become the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion. He lost the title that same year in his first defense, which took place four months later, via a unanimous decision to Elio Rojas. He immediately moved up to the next weight class and 16 months later claimed the WBC super featherweight title winning a unanimous decision over Vitali Tajbert. Ao’s two-year world championship reign included three successful title defenses before losing a 12-round decision to Gamaliel Diaz in 2012. Ao has been campaigning as a lightweight ever since, going 4-0 (2 KOs), including a 10-round unanimous decision victory over former two-time world champion Juan Carlos Salgado last October en route to being world-rated No. 2 by the WBO, No. 3 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 4 by the WBC.

Beltran (29-7-1, 17 KOs), a native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, who now lives in North Hollywood, Calif., is one of the lightweight division’s toughest and most experienced fighters. A former NABF and United States Boxing Association (USBA) lightweight champion, Beltran had his two-year five-bout unbeaten streak broken in his last fight, losing a unanimous decision to WBO lightweight champion and 2014 Fighter of the Year Terence Crawford last November. Crawford has since vacated that title to challenge for the WBO junior welterweight crown. Beyond his professional fights, Beltran has had the benefit of being a main sparring partner for Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao for several years before becoming a top-rated contender in his own right. He is currently world-rated No. 6 by the WBO.

Zewski (26-0, 20 KOs), a native of Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada, now living in Las Vegas, has won five of his last six bouts by knockout. The former amateur standout captured the vacant NABF welterweight title with a fourth-round knockout of Prince Doku, Jr. last June. In his last fight, in December, he successfully defended the title, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, via a 10-round majority decision over savvy veteran Jeremy Bryan. Zewski is currently world-rated No. 7 by the WBO and No. 10 by the WBC.

Ponomarev (27-0, 13 KOs), from Miass, Russia, is trained by renowned trainer Abel Sanchez. At the age of 22, Ponomarev is already a five-year pro with an impressive resume which includes WBC Baltic and WBC Youth welterweight title victories. A crowd-pleasing fighter with power in both fists and an aggressive fighting style, Ponomarev is poised to break though this year. He is currently world-rated No. 15 by the WBC.

Terence Crawford, and optimists and evangelists

By Bart Barry-
Terence Crawford
Saturday at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraskan lightweight champion Terence Crawford decisioned Mexican Raymundo Beltran lopsidedly, 119-109 and 118-110 and 119-109, in a match that was not large as its superlatives but demonstrated Crawford should stay at lightweight, which he won’t, Beltran was overrated, which no rater will admit, and Crawford should be 2014’s fighter of the year, an award that instead will go to a Russian who decisioned a 49-year-old last month.

In this, the final month of this, one hell of a dreadful year for our beloved sport, there are clear factions established among aficionados, anymore, and these factions predict with unfortunate accuracy the way each HBO main event will be seen. There are the sturdy optimists, identifiable by their collective disgust, creatively and diversely expressed; and there are the evangelists, using to describe today’s middling fare what words once adorned feats by Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran – and almost always with a financial incentive for imposing such overwrought modifiers.

The sturdy optimists saw Saturday on HBO two mediocre featherweights followed by one good lightweight and one very good lightweight. The sturdy optimists, who are optimistic for their refusal to call a counterfeit the true coin, saw nothing great happen. The evangelists, contrarily, saw the possible future of Puerto Rico prizefighting score a questionable draw with a Russian fighter – and if this year taught us little more, it taught us a former-Soviet-bloc fighter has amazingness as his birthright – followed by a future great with every tool establishing lightweight lineality against a very good contender (who should be champion!) before 12,000 Nebraskans, which is an astounding number when one considers it is 30-percent more fans than Gennady Golovkin’s record breaker of a ticketselling feat comprised in October.

The less written about undefeated Russian featherweight Evgeny Gradovich and undefeated Puerto Rican Jayson Velez’s remaining undefeated against one another, the better – as each man would be better served fighting the other man six more times than getting axed by Jamaican Nicholas Walters, and so let’s just wait for their third rematch before returning to them.

Terence Crawford is much better than most of his peers, both better at fighting than they are and better at interesting the townspeople of his native city in prizefighting, and promoter Top Rank deserves credit for working to build Crawford as an attraction in Omaha, a city not identifiable by anyone as interested in boxing till recently. Crawford’s large ticket sales in his hometown are surprising as the paucity of tickets he would sell in Las Vegas if he took his show on the road, which he oughtn’t do.

Crawford needs offensive-minded opponents to entertain best, and the more offensively basic and defensively suspect such athletic men are when they move forward, the better. Raymundo Beltran, a Mexican who fights out of Arizona and California, often as a sparring partner to the stars, was nearly right for Crawford’s style as Yuriorkis Gamboa was for Crawford’s ascension-making performance in June. Beltran fought gamely but ultimately succumbed to a sparring-partner ethic that makes meaningful effort, and the good work it gives one’s customer, nearly valuable as victory. When Beltran whacked away at Ricky Burns a couple Septembers ago, he used his Mexican suspicion of others’ acclaim to test the Scotsman and find him wanting, before treating Burns like an impostor. Saturday Beltran began with the same Mexican suspicion, one that grows in another man’s hometown, serendipitously enough for Mexican prizefighters and aficionados, to test Crawford, and land what was a jarring righthand in round 3.

But this time the man across from Beltran was a customer, not an impostor, and it remanded Beltran to nine rounds of hard labor and meaningful effort and what satisfaction and acclaim he received immediately afterwards despite losing 10 rounds unanimously. So dismal has boxing become that Crawford’s sporadic efforts to knock-out Beltran in rounds 11 and 12 met with near breathlessness from HBO’s broadcasting crew, as if endeavoring to land the decisive blow on a man whom you’ve outclassed for a solid half hour is a new and abstract form of courageousness. Alas. Evangelists are not culpable for lapses in quality control; their job is enthusiasm, not discernment, and their craft is craftily wording homages and tributes to whomever gets placed before them, not choosing those men.

Now Terence Crawford, who has the skills, potentially, to be a great lightweight but lacks the physical strength to be more than a good junior welterweight and a mediocre welterweight is summoned to 140 pounds, which is unfortunate because he fought Saturday at 153 pounds and did not carry in either fist power enough to stretch a man who began his career at 126. Barring nifty matchmaking, Crawford may well have scored his career’s last meaningful knockout in the very year aficionados happened to get excited about him, a phenomenon becoming too common in prizefighting to be called phenomenal.

It is hard to imagine Sergey Kovalev’s decisioning of a 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins evinces greater merit than Crawford’s three decisive victories over men in the primes of their careers, but as Kovalev’s decisive victory happened in front of more American boxing writers than the aggregate of Crawford’s three victories, well, one needn’t be a pessimist to know which way the nod will go, as the optimists look middle-distance, detached, and the evangelists make sure someone is looking at them for a quiet fist pump.

CHRIS EUBANK JR AND BILLY JOE SAUNDERS OUT TO STEAL THE SHOW ON MASSIVE SOLD-OUT BILL HEADLINED BY DERECK CHISORA AND TYSON FURY

LONDON (Nov 28) – Rising middleweight sensations Chris Eubank Jr and Billy Joe Saunders will be out to steal the show on a truly mouth-watering evening of boxing this Saturday, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Taking place at a 20,000 sell-out at ExCel London the pair have not minced their words in the run up to this year’s biggest and best British card, headlined by Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury’s world title eliminator.

But despite the heavyweight hitmen topping the bill, it is Eubank Jr’s and Saunders’ clash which could prove the fight of the night on a card stacked from top to bottom.

The duo have shown little regard for one another in the build up to their eagerly anticipated clash, with Eubank Jr adamant that the current British, Commonwealth and European champion has not got under his skin.

“I can see he is not mentally ready to face what is going to be brought to him on Saturday night,” said Eubank Jr. “I could see he’s not ready at the press conference, with his nervous laughing and talking like he is a school kid. It’s going to be complete domination on my part in this fight.

“From day one of my professional career I have had people saying all types of things to me – from social media to trolls to haters. They have always been insulting me, whether it’s because they doubt my abilities or they didn’t like my dad so they don’t want me to succeed.

“So I’m used to insults and immune to any bad words that are directed towards me. He is not getting to me but I am getting to him by not reacting to the dumb things he says,” said Eubank Jr.

Despite both men having around the same number of professional fights, with the unbeaten Saunders’ 20 wins to Eubank Jr’s 18, it is the Brighton speedster who is seen as the less experienced of the two.

However, the 25-year-old is looking to follow in his father’s famous footsteps but says he is his own man when in the ring and has vowed that he will stop the highly-touted Saunders.

“I don’t take advice – I know what I’m going to do. If I feel like I have to change a certain strategy or start doing something different I will do it. That’s the difference between me and Billy Joe he needs someone to tell him what he needs to do – I don’t,” said Eubank Jr.

“I never pick a round or say when I’m going to take someone out in but he will not go the full 12 rounds with me – I’m going to knock him out. He’s not going to have enough to deal with the firepower which I’m going to bring to him,” he said.

Saunders, though, is in equally defiant mood and despite the fact he could have gone on to challenge for world honours he felt he has unfinished business back at home.

“I think you get more respect from the fans by taking on fights like this, where people can’t split you. I want to make sure everyone in Britain is beat so when I do move to world level people can say he beat everyone at his weight back home now he’s gone onto the world,” said Saunders.

“This is a fight the fans have been calling for and I’m happy we’ve managed to get this fight done – I honestly cannot wait to get in the ring,” he said.

The fight will allow the victor to go on to challenge the biggest names in the division next year, with Saunders, also 25, certain that Eubank Jr doesn’t know what is coming his way.

“It’s been a long time coming. The talking is done. This fight doesn’t need hyping up. I’m fit and ready to rock and roll. I’m going to poleaxe Chris Eubank Jr. Believe me I’m going to knock him out cold,” Saunders said.

“He says he’s going to break my heart. He wouldn’t break my heart with an AK47. So he isn’t going to break my heart – that’s definitely sure. I know what I need to do in there. I’m relaxed, all the hardwork has been done and the job is going to get done on Saturday,” he stated.

Also featuring on the night’s brilliant bill is Birmingham’s Frankie Gavin who will be looking to bounce back against the undefeated Bradley Skeete, with super-featherweights Liam Walsh and Gary Sykes challenging for the British and Commonwealth belts.

Super-middleweight ace Frank Buglioni is also appearing on the card as he takes on Andrew Robinson for the vacant WBO European title.

Once the enthralling bill is over from London, BoxNation will bring viewers live and exclusive coverage of one boxing’s hottest young superstars in the slick and exciting Terence Crawford who will defend his WBO lightweight world title against Raymundo Beltran.

In front of a full house at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska, the 27-year-old Crawford returns home for his second fight in a row, as he takes on the man who contentiously lost in his last world title bid against Ricky Burns last year.

Last June in Omaha, lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KOs) made his long-awaited hometown debut on HBO, scoring a spectacular comeback KO victory over the previously undefeated Cuban star Yuriorkis Gamboa. The 27-year-old has fast-tracked through the 135-pound division, scoring three victories on HBO last year and adding a world title belt in March 2013.

Ray Beltran (29-6-1, 17 KOs) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico is a formidable opponent on a five-fight winning streak. No stranger to the spotlight, the 33-year-old fought on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley Jr. undercard last April, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Arash Usmanee.

The night from Omaha opens with two undefeated fighters hoping to become breakout stars when Evgeny Gradovich (19-0, 9 KOs) of Russia and Jayson Velez (22-0, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico clash in a 12-round featherweight title fight. Making his fourth title defense, the 28-year-old Gradovich has shown a willingness to meet anyone, anywhere, having fought three times in Macau, China. Like Gradovich, the 26-year-old Velez has a fan-friendly style that should make for a compelling encounter.

The telecast begins with a replay of the Manny Pacquiao-Chris Algieri welterweight title fight from Macau that featured a dominant performance from Pacquiao in his 17th HBO Pay-Per-View event.
