ANTHONY OGOGO RETURNS TO THE RING TOMORROW ON JULY 18 AGAINST RUSLAN SCHELEV ON THE UNDERCARD OF ARTHUR ABRAHAM VS. ROBERT STIEGLITZ

LOS ANGELES (July 17) – Undefeated British middleweight, Anthony Ogogo (7-0, 4 KOs) of Lowestoft, England is set to make his hotly anticipated return to the ring against Ruslan Schelev (11-3, 6 KOs) of Myrhorod,Ukraine on Saturday, July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany as the undercard for the WBO World Championship fight Abraham vs. Stieglitz. The weigh-in took place today with Anthony Ogogo coming in at 73.2 kg/161.3 lbs. and Ruslan Schelev weighed in at 73.9 kg/162.9 lbs.

“Anthony Ogogo has demonstrated his undeniable talent as a fighter, and I’m pleased he will be back in the ring this Saturday against Schelev,” said Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “Ogogo isn’t worried about losing his undefeated record by fighting against the best, toughest opponents. His integrity as a fighter is what fans want to see in the ring. I can’t wait to watch his performance on July 18 against Schelev as I know he is well-prepared for this fight.”

The 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist has been out of the ring for the past 11 months recovering from a long-standing Achilles issue. Now fully fit, the Lowestoft fighter is ready to get his promising career back on track, starting with a victory over the 26 year-old Schelev.

“I wanted the very best opponent available for my return,” said Ogogo. “I didn’t want an easy opponent. I wanted someone who would really test me. I’ve worked so hard to condense a 12-month rehab process into six months, so I wanted an opponent with the right quality to give me a hard fight because that’s what I’ve longed for, and that’s exactly what Schelev is. He’s a quality fighter. He can switch stance. He’s strong and he can punch. It’s going to make for a great fight for the fans.”

“July 18 can’t come quick enough. After such a long lay-off it means everything to me to be back in the ring,” continues Ogogo. “I wake up in the morning wanting to be a world champion. For the longest time I couldn’t do anything about it physically. I couldn’t train. My feet were in casts, but I never stopped thinking about being the absolute best. I watched sports documentaries of my idols and I read autobiographies of my heroes until I was able to get back in the gym. Now I’m back and on July 18 I’ll show the world that I have what it takes to become a great.”

“I’m in great shape, but I resigned myself to never being able to run again because of my injuries,” says Ogogo. “But everything has gone so well, much better than I could have ever imagined. I’ve been able to run five miles easy and there’s not even a twinge in my Achilles. My fitness is good. My speed is where it needs to be and sparring has been going brilliantly. I’ve been sparring with my Team Sauerland friend George Groves ahead of his own world title fight.”

“Now I can’t wait to get in the ring, in front of a whole new audience and a whole new demographic of people,” Ogogo adds. “I’m so eager to impress; I can’t explain. The fans can expect to see a young, hungry fighter, full of desire and ambition ready to set the world alight and make up for lost time. The fans in Halle are in for a treat. I’ll be welcoming thousands of new members into the O-Army.”

Ogogo’s six-round contest will be his first since signing a ground breaking co-promotional deal with leading European promoter Team Sauerland and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Promoter Nisse Sauerland has high hopes for the former amateur star, “We’re all looking forward to seeing Anthony back in the ring where he belongs,” said Sauerland. “He is an exceptional talent. Activity is going to be key as he looks to fulfill his potential as one of the most exciting middleweights on the planet.”

The 26 year-old joins an action-packed event at the Gerry Weber Stadium. Arthur Abraham’s WBO World Super Middleweight title defense against Robert Stieglitz tops the star-studded bill, which also features Germany’s 19 year-old knockout specialist Vincent Feigenbutz challenging Mauricio Reynoso for the Interim WBA 168lb crown.

Sparring partner Avni Yildirim favors Abraham to beat Stieglitz

Turkish top prospect Avni Yildirim is convinced that WBO Super Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham will defend his title against Robert Stieglitz this Saturday in Halle / Westfalen. “He is in good shape”, said Yildirim after sparring with “King Arhur” last week in Berlin. “Abraham is very experienced but he doesn’t seem to be very hungry anymore. He is more of a business man than a fighter. He wants to make money and he knows that to make even more money he has to beat Stieglitz. I want to thank Arthur Abraham and his trainer Uli Wegner for giving me the chance to do some rounds with the champion. It was a good experience for me. And I think now Abraham knows who Avni Yildirim is and that there is somebody who could take away the belt from him.”

Yildirim is currently fighting at light heavyweight and will try to capture the vacant WBC Silver International Championship on August 15th in Miami, Florida, when he takes on veteran Glen Johnson. Even though the 23-year-old who has won all of his five pro fights so far feels comfortable at 175 lbs. he considers moving down to 168 lbs. “I can make either weight without any problems”, says Yildirim. “I am more powerful at light heavyweight. But if there are good fights at super middle – for instance against Abraham – I will take them, too.”

Promoter Ahmet Oner is convinced that his newest attraction got what it takes to make it all the way to the top. “I think Avni is the best Turkish fighter I have seen so far”, states Oner. “He is more skilled than Selcuk Aydin and more focused than Sinan Samil Sam. Glen Johnson is an excellent test and a big step-up for him in only his sixth pro fight but I’m sure that he is up for the task.” Oner surely wants his fighter to take the fast lane to the top. Of course, it was the promoter’s idea to let Yildirim spar with Arthur Abraham. “I have had my issues with Sauerland in the past but that’s history. And I always got along well with Uli Wegner. It’s always good to see him. He’s a great coach and I think it was good for Avni to spend some time with him.”

Abraham and Stieglitz ready for final showdown

arthur_abraham
Actions speak louder than words – at least that was the motto at today’s final press conference ahead of the ‘Final Showdown’ between WBO World Super Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) and Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) on Saturday night at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany.

Summarising the fighter’s fourth world championship contest, promoter Kalle Sauerland put it aptly. ‘’This is not a fight that needs to be hyped,’’ said Sauerland. ‘’You need only look at the first three fights between Arthur and Robert to know what we have in store for Saturday night. I’m expecting another entertaining battle and a fitting end to their epic rivalry.’’

Following their three previous encounters, Abraham holds the advantage, with two wins to one defeat. As the fourth fight approaches, the defending champion made clear his intention to claim a conclusive third victory. ‘’This is the end,’’ said the 35 year-old. ‘’There will be no fifth fight. I’ve trained extremely hard and I’m ready for whatever Robert has to offer. After Saturday, there will be no questions remaining. I will prove once and for all that I’m the better boxer.’’

The challenger from Magdeburg remained unfazed by his opponent’s comments instead renewing his promise to regain the WBO crown. ‘’I know how to beat Arthur and I’m ready to settle the score,’’ said Stieglitz. ‘’In my opinion the verdict from our last fight was unjust, but it’s not about the past. It’s about the here and now, and on Saturday I will become world champion again!’’

Arthur Abraham’s WBO World Super Middleweight title defence against Robert Stieglitz takes place on Saturday, July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle. Tickets are available by calling the Gerry Weber Ticket Centre on (+49) 5201 81 80 or online via http://www.gerryweber-world.de and http://www.tickethall.de. Abraham eyes unification after Stieglitz defence

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) insists he has all the motivation he needs to end his long-standing feud with domestic rival Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) in their fourth WBO World title fight on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle.

Following a memorable trilogy, Abraham holds the advantage with two wins to one defeat. Now, the 35 year-old champion is aiming for a conclusive third victory as he sets his sights on a super middleweight unification.

‘’The fact that this fight is for the world title gives me all the motivation I need,’’ said Abraham. ‘’Every time I enter the ring, I give up my title, and only become champion again when the final bell sounds and my hand is raised. I must approach every fight with the same desire and will to win, and if I were to think any differently it would be time for me to hang up my gloves.

‘’But I’m not thinking about retirement. I’m world champion and will remain so for the next two to three years until I chose to leave the sport. I have total belief in my skills and my training, and I know I can do everything as well if not better than Stieglitz. My promoter has billed this fight as the ‘Final Showdown’, and that is exactly what it will be. There will be no fifth fight. I will bring this rivalry to a successful conclusion and then look for a unification – that is my goal!’’

Arthur Abraham’s WBO World Super Middleweight title defence against Robert Stieglitz takes place on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle. Tickets are available by calling the Gerry Weber Ticket Centre on (+49) 5201 81 80 or online via gerryweber-world.de and tickethall.de. All the action will be shown live on SAT.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK.

16 year-old German talent Bauer ready for ring return on July 18

Germany’s youngest professional boxer, Leon Bauer (1-0, 1 KO) returns to the ring on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle on the undercard of Arthur Abraham’s WBO World title defence against Robert Stieglitz.

Having got his professional career off to a flying start with the first-round destruction of Kristof Mate, the 16 year-old super middleweight can expect a tougher test in his second paid outing against Misa Nikolic (20-35-2, 9 KOs) – a 37 year-old, 57 fight-veteran, who is old enough to be Bauer’s father.

‘’We‘ve heard a lot about Leon and we’re excited to see how he performs on the big stage against such an experienced opponent,’’ said promoter Kalle Sauerland.

As an amateur, Bauer won both regional and national junior championships, and had been tipped to join Germany’s Olympic team hoping to qualify for Rio 2016. However the young fighter had plans of his own, and having received special dispensation earlier this year, begun his professional career with one goal in sight. ‘’I want to become world champion,’’ declared the teenage talent.

One man with no doubts in the Hatzenbühl-boxer’s ability is coach and father Bernd Bauer, who is expecting his son to impress: ‘’I would not send my son into the ring if I was not one hundred per cent convinced by his talents.’’

Bauer joins fellow teenage star Vincent Feigenbutz in action on July 18. The 19 year-old Feigenbutz, who also made his professional bow at the age of 16, will be challenging for Interim WBA World Super Middleweight title against Mauricio Reynoso.

Manager Rainer Gottwald, who is credited with discovering both fighters, is confident Bauer can follow in Feigenbutz’s footsteps and take the super middleweight division by storm. ‘’Leon is a boxing gem,’’ said Gottwald. ‘’He has everything needed to become a great champion!’’

Tickets for Abraham-Stieglitz IV featuring Feigenbutz’s Interim WBA World title challenge and Bauer’s second professional contest are on sale now and available by calling the GERRY WEBER Ticket Centre on +49 (0) 5201 81 80, or online via gerryweber-world.de and tickethall.de. All the action will be shown live and exclusive in Germany on SAT.1 and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Abraham confident of victory: ”Stieglitz has no killer blow!

arthur_abraham
With only 17 days to go before Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) locks horns with Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) in their fourth WBO World Super Middleweight title contest, the champion and his coach Ulli Wegner, yesterday, opened the doors to their training camp at the Olympic Centre in Kienbaum, Germany.

Talking to the media in attendance, Wegner revealed his pleasure at ‘King’ Arthur’s preparations. ‘’Our training has gone better than expected,’’ said the 73 year-old coach. ‘’Arthur has even been sending cruiserweights to the canvas in sparring. Stieglitz has no hope. He knows only one tactic, and that’s just to come forward. Arthur is superior to him in every respect. That’s why I expect a clear victory on July 18. Anything else would be a disaster.’’

Wegner’s confidence is shared by Abraham who is promising a conclusive finish to his fourth encounter with Stielglitz.‘’I have already beaten him twice, and in our second fight I was beaten by injury,’’ said the 35 year-old champion. ‘’I can guarantee that the fourth fight will be our last. Robert throws a lot of punches, but he has no killer blow. Although I cannot promise a KO, I will leave the audience in no doubt over who the better boxer is.’’

As an added incentive Wegner has given his fighter the following ultimatum: ‘’If Arthur loses this fight, it’s over!’’ Revealing that should he lose the star coach would leave his pupil and advise him to hang up his gloves. To which, Abraham declared: ‘’I will not lose! I plan on continuing my career for at least another two years and then retiring along with my coach and my world championship belt.’’

Wegner: Abraham on course for World title defence

arthur_abraham
‘’Everything is going according to plan,’’ says Ulli Wegner, the man charged with getting Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) in optimum condition for his fourth WBO World Championship fight with super middleweight rival Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle.

Wegner has spent the last two weeks on the beach with Abraham, but far from holidaymaking, the legendary trainer and his star pupil have been undergoing an intensive training camp on the German island of Usedom.

After fourteen days of sun, sea and serious training, the 73 year-old coach believes Abraham is on course to defend his WBO World title. ‘’Everything is going according to plan,’’ reveals Wegner. ‘’After his last fight, Arthur put his feet up and had too much of a good time, but since being back in training he has worked his butt off.

‘’I’ve been pleased with his progress in Usedom and now we travel to the Olympic Centre in Kienbaum to complete our preparations. Arthur knows what is at stake, he knows this fight demands his full attention and on July 18 he will be ready!”

In between training sessions in Usedom, Abraham had been keeping his mind occupied by following Roger Federer’s progress at the Gerry Weber Open. Here the defending champion successfully retained his title in the same arena Abraham will frequent on July 18. ‘’I had been watching and supporting Federer in the breaks between our morning and afternoon session,’’ said ‘King Arthur’. ‘’For me it is a good omen that he won as I intend to the exact same thing against Stieglitz!’’

Tickets for Abraham vs. Stieglitz IV are available by calling the Gerry Weber Ticket Centre on (+49) 5201 81 80 or online via gerryweber-world.de and tickethall.de. All the action will be shown live on SAT.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK.

Feigenbutz lands Interim WBA World title shot on July 18 in Halle

Vincent Feigenbutz (19-1, 18 KOs) will face Mauricio Reynoso (15-1-1, 11 KOs) for the Interim WBA World Super Middleweight Championship as chief support for Arthur Abraham’s fourth WBO World title fight with Robert Stieglitz on July 18 at the GERRY WEBER STADIUM in Halle, Germany.

Feigenbutz gets his first shot at world glory when he takes on the Peruvian-puncher Reynoso, and the 19 year-old KO specialist aims to prove he is ready for global domination by becoming the youngest German fighter to claim a version of the world title.

‘’Since I started my professional career, I have said that my goal is to become world champion,’’ said Feigenbutz. ‘’Many people laughed at me and said I would never achieve this, but on July 18, I will prove all these people wrong and show I have what it takes to become the next world champion.’’

To ensure he is in peak physical condition, the boxer from Karlsruhe will be travelling to the Slovenian mountains to undertake an intensive training camp. ‘’The mountains provide the ideal training conditions for Vince,’’ reveals Feigenbutz’s manager Rainer Gottwald. ‘’He will be in top shape on July 18 and ready to announce himself on to the world scene.’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’Vince is a phenomenal athlete. At just 19 years of age he has already worked his way to the top of the division. On July 18, he can cement his position by becoming the WBA Interim World Champion. A victory is never enough for Vince, he wants to knock his opponents out, and this guarantees excitement for the fans at the Gerry Weber Stadium.’’

Tickets for Abraham-Stieglitz IV featuring Feigenbutz’s Interim WBA World title challenge are on sale now and available by calling the GERRY WEBER Ticket Centre on +49 (0) 5201 81 80, or online via http://www.gerryweber-world.de and http://www.tickethall.de. Abraham promises a conclusive finish in fourth fight with Stieglitz

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) has vowed to bring an end to his feud with domestic rival Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) when the German super middleweights contest the WBO World title for a fourth time on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle.

The fighters began their now familiar pre-fight routine with a kick-off press conference today, in which the reigning champion promised to provide a conclusive finish to their long-standing rivalry. ‘’Four fights with Robert is enough for me,’’ declared Abraham. ‘’Of course, victory is always the most important thing, but on July 18, I don’t just want to win, I want to win decisively and prove once and for all that I am the better man!’’

Abraham holds the advantage, having triumphed in two of their three previous encounters, but while ‘King Arthur’ eyes a conclusive third victory, Stieglitz aims to settle the score with a second win over the Berlin-based boxer. ‘’I have analysed all three of our fights in detail,’’ reveals Stieglitz. ‘’With the right tactical adjustments, I have no doubt that this time I will be victorious!’’

Ahead of their anticipated fourth encounter, Abraham’s coach Ulli Wegner has compared July 18’s battle with Germany’s most heated soccer rivalry. ‘’This is ‘Der Klassiker’,’’ declared the 73 year-old. ‘’The Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund of German boxing! Just like Munich vs. Dortmund, this great rivalry always promises excitement! Arthur must enter the ring in top condition or risk losing his position at the top of the super middleweight division.’’

Stieglitz’s coach Dirk Dzemski shares Wegner’s excitement, predicting a ‘’spectacular fight’’ at the Gerry Weber Stadium. ‘’This fight will be on a knife’s edge,’’ said Dzemski. ‘’Both boxers know how hard it will be to beat the other and fans can look forward to a spectacular fight. Arthur had better be well prepared because we’re ready for it!’’

Tickets for the ‘Final Showdown’ Abraham vs. Stieglitz IV are available by calling the Gerry Weber Ticket Centre on (+49) 5201 81 80 or online via www.gerryweber-world.de and www.tickethall.de. All the action will be shown live on SAT.1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK.

Abraham-Stieglitz IV confirmed for July 18 in Halle

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) is set to reignite his feud with super middleweight rival Robert Stieglitz (47-4-1, 27 KOs) on July 18 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany. The boxers meet for a fourth time, with the WBO crown on the line, following a memorable trilogy of world championship fights.

‘’The battle for super middleweight supremacy continues,’’ said promoter Kalle Sauerland. ‘’I’m hard pressed to think of any other trilogy in modern boxing history that has provided such a high level of drama. For that reason, we go again. On July 18, for an unprecedented fourth time, Arthur and Robert will contest the WBO super middleweight title.’’

Abraham and Stieglitz first met in August 2012, where a points decision earned Abraham the WBO strap. In a March 2013 rematch, Stieglitz got his revenge with a fourth-round technical knockout victory. The belt once again changed hands in March 2014 with Abraham flooring Stieglitz on his way to a split decision win. The stage is now set for a fourth battle between ‘King Arthur’ and his mandatory challenger Stieglitz at Germany’s famous Gerry Weber Stadium.

For the defending champion Abraham, July 18 offers him the opportunity to write the final chapter in his rivalry with Stieglitz. ‘’Robert is mandatory challenger, so of course he deserves his shot,’’ said Abraham. ‘’I’ve enjoyed our rivalry, but like all good things, this must come to an end. The Gerry Weber Stadium will provide the perfect venue for me to finish our feud. I had Robert down in the twelfth-round of our last encounter, but this time he will hit the canvas a lot sooner!’’

Tickets for Abraham-Stieglitz IV are on sale now and available by calling the GERRY WEBER Ticket Centre on +49 (0) 5201 81 80, or online via gerryweber-world.de and tickethall.de. All the action will be shown live and exclusive in Germany on SAT.1 and on Sky Sports in the UK.

arthur_abraham
Arthur Abraham (39-4, 28 KOs) regained the WBO Super Middleweight title with a split decision victory over Robert Stieglitz (46-4, 26 KOs) tonight in Magdeburg.

Abraham looked close to forcing the stoppage, dropping the defending champion in the final round. However Stieglitz was able to hold on and take the fight to the judges’ scorecards.

The judges scored the fight 114-111, 115-110, and 112-113 in favor of ‘’The King’’, who avenged the loss he suffered to Stieglitz last year and became a world champion for a third time.

Abraham will return to action on May 31st, when he will make the first defense of his newly won title. The opponent and venue will be announced shortly.

Stieglitz – Abraham III set for March 1st

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Robert Stieglitz will meet Arthur Abraham for a 3rd tim on March 1st as Stieglitz will defend his WBO Super Middleweight title after his promoter, SES won a purse bid.

Steinforth, who promotes Stieglitz, bid $3,135,000 to easily beat the only other offer, which was $1,541,414 by Abraham promoter Sauerland Event at the WBO purse bid. The minimum bid was $300,000.

Rafael Get the latest scoop and analysis on the world of boxing from ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael in his blog.

“Of course, I am happy that we won the purse bid, but especially for Robert, my SES team and our [German] TV partner SAT.1,” Steinforth said. “I am happy because there is more planning certainty for us.”

As the titleholder, Stieglitz is entitled to 75 percent of the winning bid ($2,351,250) while Abraham will get the remaining 25 percent challenger’s share ($783,750).

“That’s good job by my promoter Ulf Steinforth,” Stieglitz said of his winning the purse bid. “Now I can concentrate on the preparation and on the fight against Arthur. I am also happy for my fans in Germany and especially for Magdeburg.”

Do or die for Abraham against De Carolis on October 26

arthur-abraham_image206
The tension is rising! There are only three days to go until Arthur Abraham (37-4, 28 KOs) can prove that he is rightfully the mandatory challenger to WBO Super Middleweight World Champion Robert Stieglitz. On October 26 at the EWE ARENA in Oldenburg, Germany the WBO Intercontinental Titlist will meet world-ranked Giovanni De Carolis (20-4, 10 KOs). And only a win can keep his dreams of a third fight against Stieglitz alive.

“I know what’s on the line,” assured the 33-year-old Abraham at today’s press conference at the Acara Hotel in Oldenburg. Asked about his ten-year-tenure as a professional boxer with coach Ulli Wegner, the former two-weight division world champion replied jokingly: “As you can see, I have no thick hair anymore. I lost nearly all of it!” But he believes that during those years the rough tone of his cornerman has helped him to be successful. “Look Arthur,” 71-year-old Wegner added. “This Saturday night I will be in your corner and not with Karo Murat in Atlantic City. That’s what our relationship means to me!”

Said Kalle Sauerland: “Only a victory counts and I believe that Arthur is going to deliver it on October 26. It’s do or die – a wins means another crack at a world title, a loss would be catastrophic.

However, Italian De Carolis wants to spoil those plans. The 29-year-old boasted a lot of confidence today: “I’m well prepared. After having studied Abraham’s last fights, my coach and I have worked out a game plan to beat him.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the EWE ARENA Oldenburg, which also sees Jack Culcay, Robert Woge and Marcos Nader fighting in title bouts, can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

Abraham stays busy, fights on October 26

arthur_abraham
On October 26, Arthur Abraham (37-4, 28 KOs) wants to show the world that he is ready for another crack at the WBO Super-Middleweight Championship. In Oldenburg, Germany, Robert Stieglitz´ mandatory challenger will step into the ring against an opponent to be announced shortly.

“Stieglitz stated in the press that he will have one more fight in 2013, which will be a voluntary defense on October 19,” said Abraham. “That means to me that I won’t be able to regain the world title before 2014. But I need to stay focused and ready. That is why I am fighting on October 26.” The 33-year-old knows: “This is going to be a good chance to up my game compared to my last fight against Shihepo in August. Although I am risking my mandatory status, this challenge will give me confidence ahead of a third meeting with Stieglitz.”

Hagen Doering, Team Sauerland’s Sports Director, said: “We cannot name the opponent just yet as we are in negotiations with three ranked contenders. All I can say is that it will definitely be a true test for Abraham.”

The venue is nothing new to the former champion as he had his first-ever world title defense at the EWE ARENA Oldenburg against Australian Shannan Taylor back in 2006. “I have good memories of this place and that’s why I like to fight there again,” added Abraham, hoping for another emphatic victory.

Stieglitz stops Abraham in four; Recaptures Super Middle crown

Robert Stieglitz recaptured the WBO Super Middleweight title with a stoppage over Arthur Abraham after Abraham could not continue due to his left eye being closed as the fourth round was about to commence in Magdeburg, Germany.

Stieglitz hurt Abraham in round two and almost had him out. But what he did do was cause massive swelling around the left eye of Abraham. It was more of the same in round three as Steglitz continued to pound on Abraham. Abraham, knowing he was in trouble tried to throw hayemaker punches but it was no avail as the fight was stopped by referee Michael Ortega stopped the bout due to the swelling of Abraham’s eye.

This was a rematch of last August bout that saw Abraham win a unanimous decision.

Stieglitz is now 44-3 with 25 knockouts. Abraham is now 36-4.

Heavyweight contender Robert Helenius scored a ten round unanimous decision over Michael Sprott.

Helenus looked good at times and very pedestrian at other parts of the bout as he took the first two and some of the middle rounds but was tagged on numerous occasions by Sprott.

Scores were 98-93 on two cards and 97-93 for Helenius who is now 19-0. Sprott is now 37-20

George Groves remained perfect by stopping an overmatched Baker Barakat in round two of a scheduled eight round Super Middleweight bout.

Groves was dominant and dropped Barakat in round and finished the fight with a big combination and it was stopped.

Groves is now 18-0 with 14 knockouts. Barakat is now 37-14-4.

Public workout in Magdeburg – Abraham and Stieglitz impressive

The biggest shopping mall of Magdeburg played host for today´s public
workout ahead of Saturday´s big fight night at the GETEC-Arena. The main
event of the evening will see current WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Arthur
Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) take on Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) in their
hotly anticipated rematch. The excitement of the fans was a close
resemblance to the fights of Sven Ottke, who celebrated some of his greatest
victories in the east of Germany. More than 1.000 people came to see the
boxers up close and were more than impressed with the skills they put on
display.

First to step into the ring inside the mall was former champion Robert
Stieglitz, who once more made his intention of getting revenge on Abraham
clear. However, the challenger was keen not to give too much away and only
went one round with his coach Dirk Dzemski while hitting the pads. “I am
ready and will bring the title back to Magdeburg,” said the 31-year-old
super-middleweight who lost the WBO Championship during the first bout
between the two Germans. Of course, Abraham will do everything he can to
destroy whatever plans Stieglitz has made. The 33-year-old demonstrated his
abilities during four stints of pad work with Ulli Wegner who made it clear
that he has an obvious favorite for the night. “My hope is that the best man
wins on March 23,” said the 70-year-old. “And that will be Arthur!”

Robert Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs) also gave the waiting fans a glimpse of what
to expect come Saturday night. The 29-year-old heavyweight will take on
Michael Sprott (37-19, 17 KOs) in the co-feature of the evening and is
looking forward to the big night. “It won’t be easy, but as long as the fans
are behind me I know that I will win.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the GETEC-Arena Magdeburg, Germany are
available at www.boxen.com, www.sesboxing.de and www.eventim.de.

Abraham bullish: “Once we step into the ring I have to destroy him!”***

arthur-abraham_image206
There can only be one winner, and that is Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs).
That is at least the opinion of the WBO Champion himself and his team. The
world title fight between Abraham and Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) is
just around the corner and unsurprisingly both camps are convinced that they
have the edge over their opposition. At today’s press conference in
Magdeburg, Germany, the protagonists of the world title bout as well as
their coaches and the WBO´s current number one at heavyweight, Robert
Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs), gave their statements ahead of Saturday night.
These are the best quotes:

Arthur Abraham, WBO Super-Middleweight Champion: I am very excited to be
fighting in the city of Magdeburg. My first fight here was when Sven Ottke
retired and the atmosphere was amazing. The crowd was even doing the Mexican
wave which you normally only get during soccer games. I have never seen
anything like that outside of Magdeburg. I can only say one thing about the
fight. We won the first fight and consequently took the world championship.
Now it´s time for the rematch and we have a clear goal. We have to destroy
him and we will do everything we can to reach our goal which showed during
our preparations. We have a lot of respect for our opponents but once we
step into the ring I have to destroy him, no question.

Robert Stieglitz, challenger: Those are some big words. We will see what
happens come March 23. I am in great shape and want to take revenge. There
is a reason why I was the world champion for more than two years and I want
the crown back. It was a close decision (the first fight). I am excited to
be fighting in Magdeburg. The fans will help me to take revenge and I am
looking forward to that.

Ulli Wegner, coach of Abraham: I don’t really have to tell you what I want
to happen come Saturday. We will leave the ring as the winner. We have to be
that confident as Arthur is the reigning world champion. It will be a great
fight and in my opinion the first couple of rounds and the reaction of the
crowd could be decisive. May the best man win, and it is not a surprise that
as a coach I have faith in my guy. We did everything we could to get Arthur
into shape and we will give it our all.

Dirk Dzemski, coach of Stieglitz: Robert´s preparation has been great. I am
convinced that this will be an exciting fight, maybe even a war. I hope that
the home fans will be right behind Robert and keep pushing him throughout
the bout. I also hope that he will not make the same mistakes again. We have
been working on them for a long time. He has a good game plan and tactics
which will surprise you.

Robert Helenius, WBO #1 heavyweight: I am really looking forward to
Saturday. My opponent is great and therefore it will be a great fight. My
sparring partners have all been good and I will just do my thing. I will
keep him at distance with my jab and then get him with a hard right.

Wilfried Sauerand: I have to say that we always had great events here in
Magdeburg. I am not surprised at all that it will be a sellout crowd on
Saturday. The people here have a great knowledge of the sport and they know
when there is good boxing on display. I hope that Arthur will be as
successful here as Sven Ottke was and that the fight on Saturday will have
the same quality as their first one in Berlin.

Kalle Sauerland: I said before the first fight that it will turn out to be a
war, and that was exactly what happened. I don’t expect the rematch to be
any different. We are confident and believe that we will again turn out to
be the winners.

WBO Super Middleweight Championship Rematch ARTHUR ABRAHAM vs. ROBERT STIEGLITZ

arthur_abraham
Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) feels very confident. The 31-year-old super middleweight will face off with Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) in a world championship rematch on March 23rd. Stieglitz is hoping to avenge his loss on points back in August of last year when the pair meets up for a second time in Magdeburg, Germany. But according to Stieglitz himself, their next fight will be a whole different story and he will ensure that the WBO title finds its way back to Magdeburg.

Abraham-Stieglitz II will be televised live ringside to the U.S. from GTEC Arena in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany on This Saturday! March 23, beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET / 1:00 p.m. PT, exclusively on EPIX, the premium entertainment service. EPIX will stream the fights live on EpixHD.com and on the EPIX app on Xbox consoles and Roku players as part of a special free trial offer for boxing fans.

You lost your WBO Title against Arthur Abraham on August 25. Now you had some time to reflect on the fight. What are your thoughts?

Robert Stieglitz: I’m not the kind of person to look back and dwell on the past – I always have my sights on what lies ahead. Of course, I have mixed feelings when I reflect the happenings of that night. Although I did lose on points and consequently my title, I do believe that it was a great fight in front of a huge crowd at the o2 World in Berlin. The fans were ecstatic – hence, the big interest in the rematch. The important thing to me is that I only loaned him my title and now I want it back.

Many experts said that Abraham could only beat you by knockout. How surprised were you when he won the fight via unanimous decision?

Robert Stieglitz: First of all, I have to admit that he did better over the whole twelve rounds from a boxing point of view. However, he did not manage to knock me out and improve his KO ratio. Secondly, the cuts I suffered in rounds four and five had a big impact on my performance for the duration of the bout. I wasn’t able to pressure him as much as I wanted to and make life difficult for him towards the end of the fight. So no, I wasn’t surprised by the result. I was mostly annoyed by my own performance and the cuts.

What kind of mistakes have you discovered from your first clash with Abraham?
Did you change anything during your preparation this time round?

Robert Stieglitz: You will always have to deal with setbacks. Then it is important to sit down and find out what went wrong. You shouldn’t make the same mistakes twice. My coach Dirk Dzemski and I have been analyzing the fight. But I won’t get into too much detail about what I will do differently this time. Everyone knows, even Arthur himself, that I win fights with my technical ability, agility and work rate.

The rematch with Abraham is just around the corner. How satisfied are you with your progress?

Robert Stieglitz: Everything is going according to plan. I have gotten through a successful operation on my hand and won a buildup fight within three rounds in Barcelona in January. We have also been to training camp in the Bavarian Forest during February. We have been running through the snow and added some new elements to my training. My fitness coach Alfred Segerer has come up with a program specified to my needs. Therefore, it is all good.

Would you say that it is easier to prepare for Abraham as you have already stood inside the ring with him?

Robert Stieglitz: Yes, I believe it is, as I now know what Arthur Abraham looks like when he is in good shape. It makes it easier to adjust to his style. Of course, it is the same for him. Although I have to say that he hasn’t seen the best of Robert Stieglitz yet.

The first fight between the two of you took place in Abraham’s hometown of Berlin. Would you say that he had an advantage and do you have the advantage now that the rematch will be held in your own backyard, Magdeburg?

Robert Stieglitz: I don’t think that you can call it an advantage. What matters is that I traveled to Berlin as the world champion and now he is coming to my home as the current champion. He even said himself that he will be entering “The Lion´s Den“. That takes a lot of courage and we both have been given credit for that. I believe that the atmosphere will be even more electrifying in Magdeburg than it was in Berlin. We will see how he handles that.

How important is this fight for the future of your career? Is it an all or nothing situation for you as well as for Abraham?

Robert Stieglitz: Both of us were asked this question before our first fight and now everybody is excited about the rematch. There is no point in discussing if this is all or nothing for us. We should be happy about the fact that Germany currently has two world-class super-middleweights who will fight it out for a world championship. Both of us have the ability to get back to the top even if we should lose.

What is your prediction for March 23?

Robert Stieglitz: The winner and world champion will be Robert Stieglitz. I will take the borrowed WBO Title back to the city of Magdeburg, back to my promoter SES.

What happens if you should actually win? Will we witness Abraham vs.
Stieglitz III or are you aiming for a unification bout against the winner of Kessler vs. Froch II?

Robert Stieglitz: I don’t believe that it would be appropriate to discuss the future at this point of time. That is a topic for after March 23.

Arthur Abraham: “Stieglitz doesn’t have the power to threaten me

March 23 shall represent another glorious day for Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs). Then he will meet Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) for their hotly anticipated rematch inside the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg, Germany. The 33-year-old Abraham captured the WBO Super-Middleweight World Championship last August when he beat Stieglitz on points in his hometown of Berlin. This time the champion is making his way to his opponent’s backyard. In the following interview, he reveals what kind of performance can be expected from him.

Mister Abraham, the last time people saw you putting on the gloves you beat Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla by technical knockout on December 15. Were you satisfied with your first title defense at super-middleweight?

Arthur Abraham: I guess that I showed quite a good performance against Bouadla. There might have been some details I could have done better but in the end, I dominated my opponent that night and took care of him early. In preparation to that fight Mister Wegner told me his expectations and I must have fulfilled most of them. Anyway, he didn’t complain to me afterwards.

March 23 will mark the second time you are going to face Robert Stieglitz. Is there anything left you can surprise him with – or could he surprise you?

Arthur Abraham: Stieglitz hasn’t seen the best that Arthur Abraham has to offer in our first fight whereas he might have already shown everything he’s got. I have some words for him: Beware, because our rematch is going to be much tougher than the first fight! I’m training as hard as ever for this clash. After all, the crowd deserves to be entertained. My training regime is pure torment – and I love it.

Is it easy for you to adjust to Stieglitz’s style because you already fought him before?

Arthur Abraham: Definitely, I already beat him and I got all the knowledge and tools to do it again. He can’t really alter the way he fights but I should not underestimate him. Stieglitz wasn’t a world champion for nothing, defending his title a few times before I took it off him. He still has the ambition to beat me. Therefore, I have to sit down again with my coach and develop a game plan to defend my belt.

Do you feel better prepared in comparison to the first fight against Stieglitz?

Arthur Abraham: I feel prepared just as well. My coach and the rest of the team make me feel like that I can beat him for a second time. I still have a lot left inside my tank and want to defend my title a few times. My shape and motivation are the fundament for me still being the WBO Champion after March 23.

You will step inside the arena as the defending champion. The first fight versus Stieglitz saw you as the challenger. Do you have a different mindset with the belt around your waist?

Arthur Abraham: My attitude is still the same. I want to be the one standing tall. If I would think differently, I could capitulate before the fight has even happened. To defend a world championship is quite different than to challenge for a title. I have experienced both situations. Therefore, I know that Stieglitz will be fired up to get his hands on the WBO Belt again. But I won’t let him. My will and winning mentality will outlast his.

Can you please tell us about the punching power of Robert Stieglitz? Are you worried about it?

Arthur Abraham: I have respect for every opponent I face inside the ring. All I can say is that I have fought opponents with much more pop. I can assure you first-hand that he isn’t feather-fisted but Stieglitz doesn’t have the power to threaten me.

The first fight was staged in your hometown of Berlin. For the rematch, you have to go to his backyard – will this be a special challenge to you?

Arthur Abraham: Indeed, this fight is going to happen in his hometown of Magdeburg but this won’t work to his advantage as he might think. Years ago, my coach Ulli Wegner guided Sven Ottke to his biggest successes at this very arena. I feel confident that more than half of the crowd will side with me come March 23. Moreover, Berlin isn’t that far away either. For one night only, the city of Magdeburg will be my backyard. The people who might boo me at the beginning will be the ones who will cheer me the loudest after the fight.

The first time you fought Stieglitz, you followed the game plan of winning the fight on points. Are you planning for a stoppage win this time around?

Arthur Abraham: First and foremost, I plan to win – it doesn’t matter if I beat him on points or get it done early. To win by knockout is always like the cherry on the cake but you can’t plan such things beforehand. I still haven’t reached the top of my game as a boxer and I know that I can do even better. I know that I will be more aggressive in the rematch. It will be a much more intense encounter and the crowd will see if my opponent can put up some resistance – or not.

LIVE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING MAKES ITS EPIX RETURN WBO Super Middleweight Championship Rematch ARTHUR ABRAHAM vs. ROBERT STIEGLITZ and 2013 Debut of Undefeated No. 1 Heavyweight Contender ROBERT HELENIUS

arthur_abraham
NEW YORK (March 4, 2013) — World championship boxing returns to EPIX this month. Two- division world champion “King” ARTHUR ABRAHAM will defend his WBO super middleweight crown against the former champion he dethroned, ROBERT STIEGLITZ, in a rematch of their “Fight of The Year”-contender of last summer. Abraham-Stieglitz II will be televised live ringside from GTEC Arena in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany on Saturday, March 23, beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. PT, exclusively on EPIX, the premium entertainment service. EPIX will stream the fights live on EpixHD.com and on the EPIX app on Xbox consoles and Roku players as part of a special free trial offer for boxing fans.

These two gladiators boast three world titles between them and a combined record of 79-6 (52 KOs) — a winning percentage of 93% and a victory by knockout ratio of 66%.

In addition to the Abraham- Stieglitz world super middleweight championship rematch, the live EPIX telecast will feature undefeated No. 1 heavyweight contender ROBERT “The Nordic Nightmare” HELENIUS, risking rank and record in the co-main event.

Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs), a native of Armenia who lives in Berlin, certainly lived up to his ring name, King Arthur, when he ruled the middleweight division as an undefeated world champion. He captured the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight crown in 2005, knocking out Kingsley Ikeke in the fifth round. He successfully defended his title 11 times – seven by way of knockout – during his four-year reign. The contenders he defeated as middleweight champion had a combined record of 298-18-6 when he fought them, including Shannon Taylor, Kofi Jantuah, Edison Miranda, Lajuan Simon and Raul Marquez. In search of bigger challenges, Abraham vacated his title and moved up to super middleweight to compete in the Super Six tournament in 2009. After knocking out former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor in the opening bout, he lost his next three and was eliminated from the tournament. In 2012 he righted his ship, knocking out Pablo Farias in the fifth round to claim the WBO European super middleweight title. Two fights later, he upset Stieglitz, winning an exciting 12-round unanimous decision. In his last fight, Abraham successfully defended his new title, knocking out Medhi Bouadla in the eighth round last December 15.

Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs), a Russian native who fights out of Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, enters his title challenge having won 12 of his last 13 bouts. Stieglitz captured the WBO super middleweight title in 2009, knocking out undefeated defending champion Karoly Balzsay in the 11th round. He successfully defended the title six times against contenders who had a combined record of 160-23-7 when he fought them during his three-year reign. He lost the title to Abraham last August 25. In his last fight, Stieglitz traveled to Barcelona, Spain and knocked out Michal Nieroda in the third round on January 26.

Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs), a native of Sweden who fights out of Berlin, Germany, boasts knockout victories over former heavyweight champions Lamon Brewster and Samuel Peter as well as top contenders Dereck Chisora, Siarhei Liakhovich, and Attila Levin en route to becoming the WBO’s No. 1 heavyweight contender. In his last fight, on November 10, 2012, he defeated Sherman Williams by unanimous decision.

Abraham as motivated as ever

arthur-abraham_image206
It won´t be a walk in the park. When Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) defends his WBO Super-Middleweight Title at the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg, Germany on March 23, he enters the Lion´s Den. The man aiming to take King Arthur´s belt away is Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs), who will more or less have home advantage. Abraham dethroned Stieglitz on August 25 at the o2 World in Berlin. “That fight was in my own backyard”, said Abraham. Now the pair will meet again in Stieglitz´s backyard.

The first showdown took place at today´s press conference in Magdeburg. “I didn’t lose the belt, I just borrowed it. I had a bad day back in August,” said the former champion. Of course the 31-year-old wants to use this rematch to win back the WBO Title. Abraham on the other hand displayed a very relaxed attitude but did promise the fans a real battle. “I am twice as motivated now that Robert wants to win back the title. All I will say is that this fight will turn out to be a war.” His prediction: “I will keep the belt.”

Stieglitz´s coach Dirk Dzemski is hoping that his prodigy will be able to stick to his game plan come March 23. On the other hand Abraham´s trainer Ulli Wegner is looking forward to the big fight night in Magdeburg. This is the same place where he celebrated some great victories with Sven Ottke. “It is great to be back home. The only obligation we have is to keep the title.”

Kalle Sauerland is also expecting a thrilling encounter: “The rematch might be even better and more dramatic than the first fight – we might even get to witness a KO.”

Tickets for the big fight night at the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg, Germany can be purchased at www.eventim.de as well as www.boxen.com and www.sesboxing.de.

Abraham enters “The Lion´s Den!”***

Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) is putting his title on the line in Magdeburg, Germany. The 32-year-old takes on Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) in a rematch of their August 25 bout at the o2 World Berlin. Back then Abraham won against Stieglitz in spectacular manner by unanimous decision (116:112, 116:112 and 115:113) and consequently took the WBO Super Middleweight Title of the former champion. Now the two will meet again, this time at the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg.

“For me it is a question of honor”, said Abraham. “Robert was brave enough to face me in my backyard. Now I am travelling to Magdeburg and have to enter ‘the Lion´s Den’ to fight him.” This will be the second time that the current WBO-Champion steps into the ring of the arena, which has a capacity of 7.000 people. ”The first time I fought in Magdeburg was only my ninth pro bout. I won against Branko Sobot by technical KO in round two. Back then the arena was still known as Boerderlandhalle and Sven Ottke won his farewell fight. The fans were fantastic.”

In order for the rematch to take place, the challenger, Robert Stieglitz, had to win his last test ahead of the title shot on Saturday night. The 31-year-old traveled to Barcelona, Spain where he won in convincing fashion against Michal Nieroda by KO in round three. After coming through the bout with no injuries he is now completely focussed on the project of wining back the title. Robert Stieglitz: “Somehow I wasn’t able to fight to my full potential during my first fight against Arthur. After I suffered cuts, I couldn’t get back into it. It just was not my day. But that will not happen again”, promised the prodigy of coach Dirk Dzemski.

Tickets for the big fight night on March 23 will be available from February 4 onwards and can be purchased at www.eventim.de as well as www.boxen.com and www.sesboxing.de.

Stieglitz to defend WBC crown against Abraham on August 25

IBF Super Middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz will defend his belt against former IBF Middleweight champion Arthur Abraham on Augst 25th in Germany according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Robert and Arthur are currently two of the best super middleweights in the world. They are going to set the ring on fire come Aug. 25,” said Ulf Steinforth, Stieglitz’s promoter, who hopes to celebrate his 45th birthday on the night of the fight with a Stieglitz victory.

“That’s my belt and we are going to battle for it. In the end, it will still be mine,” Stieglitz said. “I will prove that my championship is legitimate, no matter of the opposition, time or place.

Abraham will be fighting at the O2 Arena for the first time since his memorable knockout of Taylor.

“I’m happy that this fight will take place at O2 World,” Abraham said. “I was hoping for another chance to show my skills in this incredible arena in front of as many fans as possible. I am looking forward to entertain them again, like I did back in 2009 with my last round knockout against Jermain Taylor.”

Groves injured; Title fight with Stieglitz postponed

Undefeated British Super Middleweight George Groves has been forced out of his May 5th title shot with IBF champion Robert Stieglitz with an injury that has not been announced according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“I am sorry to have to announce that I won’t be boxing on May 5th. I have picked up an injury in the build up to this fight,” Groves said in a statement. “We tried to work through it but soon realized I wouldn’t be able to perform the training needed to prepare for this fight.”

“After coming back to London immediately and seeking medical advice, I hope that this problem will be sorted soon and will only be a short delay,” Groves said. “I am truly sorry to everyone involved who will be affected by this. This is without a doubt the toughest decision I have ever had to make. I am gutted but nothing worth having is given away. It has only made me more determined to achieve my goal of becoming world champion. Thanks to everyone again for their continued support in my journey.”
