ANTHONY PETTIS DEFEATS ROY JONES JR. BY MAJORITY DECISION IN MAIN EVENT OF GAMEBRED BOXING 4 ON PAY-PER-VIEW FROM FISERV FORUM IN MILWAUKEE

MILWAUKEE – April 2, 2023 – Former UFC and WEC world champion Anthony Pettis (1-0, 0 KOs) defeated Boxing Hall of Fame member Roy Jones Jr. (66-10, 47 KOs) by majority decision (76-76, 77-75 and 78-74) in the main event of Gamebred Boxing 4 live on pay-per-view from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. in an event presented by Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing.

Pettis, a native of Milwaukee who was making his professional boxing debut, managed to pull out the victory with the backing of his hometown fans. The eight-round heavyweight clash showcased some exhilarating back and forth action between the pair of pugilists, with Jones Jr. using his decades of experience and angles to get the best of Pettis at times. But Pettis proved a more than worthy opponent and did enough to get the win on two of the judges’ scorecards.

“Man, he’s 54 years old, but you’ve got to give it up for this guy,” said Pettis. “He’s a legend in the sport, a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). Praise God for allowing me to get this opportunity. Give it up for Roy Jones Jr., man.

“I’m going to take it one fight at a time, take it day by day,” continued Pettis. “I’m 1-0 as a pro and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Jones Jr. said, “For me, I like to come in and entertain the fans. My job is to come in and make sure that the fans get what they paid for, and I’m all good with that. I think it was a good fight. He did a great job and fought a very smart fight. I think I educated him and taught him a lot in this fight. So I think if I fought him again it would be even better because he knows a lot more now. I think it would be a really good rematch.

“I don’t do exhibitions, I fight real fights,” added Jones Jr. “I’m not an exhibition guy, I’m a real guy. I want to win, or I want to lose. But I’m going to go out on my shield, and I want to be able to do it again as many times as I want to. At 54 years old, that’s a beautiful thing, and he already said he’d do it again because one judge had it even. So that’s what I love.”

Pettis concluded things, adding, “I would love to do it again. Let’s go. It would be an honor, bro.”

In the co-main event, former UFC and Cage Rage world light heavyweight champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (2-0, 1 KO) made his second professional boxing appearance in a six-round heavyweight battle against debuting fellow Brazilian and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (0-1, 0 KOs). Souza holds an MMA victory over Belfort, but Belfort jumped out to an early lead in their boxing contest, knocking Souza down twice in the third frame. Belfort tried to finish Souza early, but Souza was able to survive and made it to the bell.

Souza, showing the heart of a former champion, had strong fourth and fifth rounds. Belfort rocked Souza again in the final stanza, and although Souza was able to survive until the final bell, Belfort pulled away with the unanimous decision (57-55 and 58-54 twice) victory.

All-time great UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo faced former top UFC contender Jeremy Stephens in a six-round welterweight affair with Aldo entering a professional boxing ring for the second time and Stephens making his professional boxing debut. The pair first met five years ago in an entertaining MMA struggle won by Aldo that garnered him “Performance of the Night.”

In the squared circle, Aldo and Stephens showed signs of far more experienced boxers, giving the fight fans and judges a very evenly matched contest that resulted in a majority draw (58-56 for Aldo and 57-57 twice).

“Jeremy is a tough guy,” said Aldo. “I was very prepared for this fight. This is my second professional boxing fight, and Jeremy is really tough. But I think I did enough to win this fight. I was blocking a lot of his punches, and my corner was telling me I won the fight. So I don’t really understand. I need to go back to my house, see the fight and then train more for the next one.”

Stephens said, “Much respect to Jose Aldo. You know, I’m a big fan of this guy. I watched this guy growing up. He’s put it down for MMA. And it’s an honor to come here, close to the Midwest. Iowa, are you in the house, or what, baby?

“Let’s run it back for number three,” continued Stephens. “This guy is a legend. We put it down tonight, gave you guys a show. That’s what it is!”

Milwaukee’s own undefeated former NABF champion and rising contender Luis Feliciano (17-0, 8 KOs) defeated an extremely durable and game Clarence Booth (21-8, 13 KOs) by unanimous decision (78-74, 77-75 and 79-73) in an exciting eight-round super lightweight bout. With the hometown crowd behind him, Feliciano served up a dazzling performance, working the body and landing some thudding headshots on Booth, who refused to back down. And although the experienced Booth was coming on in the second half of the bout, Feliciano’s early lead proved insurmountable.

Undefeated rising super featherweight prospect Devin Cushing (13-0, 10 KOs) remained unbeaten, stopping the veteran Damian Marchiano (18-12-1, 7 KOs) by technical knockout. In a bout that was scheduled for six rounds, the flashy, slick Cushing used his jab and combinations to outland and outclass Marchiano en route to an easy stoppage win. Late in the third frame, Cushing landed a big right hand followed by a left that floored Marchiano. Marchiano got up in time, but referee Dave Smith had seen enough, deemed Marchiano unable to continue and stopped the fight at the 2:59 mark of the third round.

In an extremely spirited and competitive six-round featherweight bout, Pearl Gonzalez and Gina Mazany squared off in the center of the ring with Mazany cutting Gonzalez over her right eye near the end of round one. Gonzalez was able to weather the cut, and in a rock ‘em sock ‘em back-and-forth contest that saw both women landing some very heavy shots, it was Mazany that emerged victorious by majority decision (57-57, 59-55 and 58-56).

The second bout on the pay-per-view portion of the fight card featured heavyweights Dillon Cleckler and Joshua Burns going toe-to-toe with Cleckler defeating Burns by technical knockout. Cleckler caught Burns with a right hand that dropped burns early in the first round. Burns made it to his feet to continue, but Cleckler swarmed Burns and quickly landed several more flush right hands, sending Burns to the canvas for a second and final time. Referee Benjy Esteves Jr. called a stop to the action 1:20 into round one of their scheduled six-round fight.

In the pay-per-view opener, Bi Nguyen defeated Andy Nguyen by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring their four-round bantamweight contest 39-37.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee:

ROY JONES JR.

“It’s fun to still be able to do what I love doing. I’m looking forward to an awesome event come Saturday night.

“I challenged myself to make the 200-pound weight for this fight. You don’t want to be the guy who can’t set an example. I’ve always wanted to set a good example.

“Masvidal is promoting a fight this week and fighting next week, and there’s nobody else doing anything like that. That’s what really got my attention.

“The problem with boxing is that everyone is scared to lose. If you don’t fight the best opponent out there, then you’re just wasting time. If you want to be the best, you have to go take the test.

“I just love to fight. To be in here with an amazing group of athletes and people, I feel like I’m in heaven.

“If I show that at 54-years-old, that I can dedicate myself to a training camp and get back down to weight, that’s going to say a lot for the fighters I train. They can’t give me any more excuses.”

ANTHONY PETTIS

“It feels good to be back in Milwaukee. Last time I was here I won the UFC world title 10 years ago. To be back now fighting a legend like Roy Jones Jr. is a blessing.

“This is amazing timing to be back here fighting. It’s great to see the growth of this city and this arena. When I was fighting last time it wasn’t like this, so it’s really cool to be performing in my city.

“When I came up in this city there weren’t a lot of names coming up from here. Now we’re paving the way and we’ve made this city a hub for combat sports. It’s cool to be able to put the spotlight on them.

“I’m excited to be back in Milwaukee to perform in front of my family, friends and people who have supported me throughout my career.

“I can’t wait to fight one of the greatest of all time in boxing. This is a dream come true. The fight gods have blessed me with this one.

“Milwaukee, thank you for hosting us, I hope that everyone comes out for a great night of boxing.”

VITOR BELFORT

“This is my first time fighting on my birthday and I’m fighting a tremendous legendary fighter from Brazil. I have a lot of respect for Souza, so we trained very hard.

“My kids have really pushed me to become the best athlete in the house. We have a lot of competition in the house and it’s a privilege to be an example for them.

“I’m joyful and grateful to be here. You’re judged by the people you’ve fought. That’s what makes a fighter unique, because he can judge himself by competing against the best. It’s a privilege and a joy.”

RONALDO SOUZA

“I’m very grateful to be here. I had a very hard camp for this fight. I’m 100 percent ready for this and I’m excited to show everyone that I can box too.

“This is a great event and I’m very excited. I’m going to get in the ring and fight to win. That’s my only goal.”

JOSE ALDO

“For me it’s a pleasure to be here. This is gonna be a great fight and I’m ready. I hope everyone tunes in and enjoys this show Saturday. It’s going to be a great night.

“Since I’ve been at this weight class I’ve been training in boxing a lot for the last few years. I’m prepared for anything that happens in the ring.

“I’m very happy to be here. I’m 100 percent confident that on Saturday night I’m going to give everyone watching a great show.”

JEREMY STEPHENS

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity. This is a tremendous platform and a great opportunity. You all know who I am and what I do, so everyone should just tune in and enjoy the show.

“The fight gods have blessed us. It’s an honor to be up here with so many legends. This is a tremendous opportunity. I feel like I’m in a dream. This is the best place in the world to be right now.

“I’ve lost a lot in my career, but you’ll never learn from a win the way that you learn from a loss. The losses are brutal. But that’s what fighting is about. Picking yourself back up off the floor.

“I feel really good at this weight. I feel more fluid and I’m not holding onto as much tension. I can truly be my best self. I could make weight right now.

“I’m shutting out the emotions and sticking to my intentions. I’m here to do what I love.”

PEARL GONZALEZ

“I’m honored to be here and to be sitting next to all of these legends. I’ve dreamed of this my whole life.

Boxing has been quite a journey for me. I’ve been on this journey for a couple of years. I’ve really been working on my boxing skills and working to become a great striker. I’m so excited to show everyone on Saturday night.

“I’m cutting weight so I can’t eat sweets, so I figured I might as well wear it. So my Aunts made me this beautiful outfit out of Fruit Roll-Ups. The hard part is done. I train hard every single day, so these are the little things I can do to lighten up the mood while I cut weight.

“I can promise one thing, I will not be taking a step backwards. I will bring this fight to Gina for every second of every round.

“I’m so honored to be here. I’m so close to my city of Chicago and I’m gonna have a big crowd of family here.

“This is an invigorating opportunity. To be here on a big stage and a new sport is a great new challenge.

“We’re gonna go toe-to-toe and find out who’s gonna be the last woman standing. I’m not backing up. We’ll see who hits harder on Saturday night.”

GINA MAZANY

“I’m grateful to be able to do what I love. I’ve worked really hard and put a lot of time into this. I’ve been fighting for over 15 years and I’m really excited for this show. It’s gonna be good.

“I’m really excited and blessed to be here. I can’t wait for my dog to come out on Saturday night.

“There’s nothing I love to do more than fight. I love to scrap. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to go toe-to-toe with Pearl.”

FULL CARD ANNOUNCED FOR JORGE MASVIDAL’S GAMEBRED BOXING 4 PPV EVENT HEADLINED BY SHOWDOWN BETWEEN COMBAT SPORT LEGENDS ROY JONES JR. & ANTHONY PETTIS

MILWAUKEE – March 27, 2023 – The full card has been announced for the Saturday, April 1, “Gamebred Boxing 4” pay-per-view event (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, presented by Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing.

In the main event, Boxing Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. and former UFC and WEC World Champion Anthony Pettis of Milwaukee will go toe-to-toe in an intriguing six-round heavyweight clash between two of combat sports’ most skilled, accomplished and popular champions.

A colorful array of boxing and MMA’s best highlight the exciting undercard, including former UFC and Cage Rage World Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (1-0, 1 KO) making his second official pro boxing appearance in a six-round heavyweight battle against debuting fellow Brazilian and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

The grappler Souza holds an MMA victory over Belfort, but the quick-fisted southpaw Belfort is much more established in the ring, having defeated the great Evander Holyfield by TKO in a September 2021 exhibition bout, in addition to his official first-round boxing KO over Josemario Neves in 2006.

In another MMA crossover bout, all-time great UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo of Brazil will compete in a second-sport rematch against former MMA foe and top UFC contender Jeremy Stephens. The pair first met five years ago in an entertaining struggle won by Aldo that garnered him “Performance of the Night.” The two MMA vets will meet this time in a six-round welterweight affair.

Also on the main card, Milwaukee’s own undefeated former NABF Champion and rising contender Luis Feliciano (16-0, 8 KOs) will take on durable veteran Clarence Booth (21-7, 13 KOs) of Florida in an eight-round super lightweight bout, while Florida’s undefeated Devin Cushing (12-0, 9 KOs) will face Argentine veteran Damian David Marchiano (18-11-1, 7 KOs) in a six-round super featherweight tussle.

Former UFC contender Pearl Gonzalez will take on fellow mixed martial artist turned social media star Gina Mazany in a six-round featherweight showdown. Brooklyn’s Gonzalez is already 2-0 with one KO as a boxer. Originally from Alaska, Mazany will be making her boxing debut.

Kicking off the pay-per-view telecast will be a six-round heavyweight battle between 11-1 MMA/3-1 Bareknuckle fighter Dillon “Bad Boy” Cleckler and Bellator MMA and fellow bareknuckle competitor Josh “The Hammer” Burns.

“If you’re on the fence about buying this PPV, we don’t blame you. You more than likely don’t have a clue how these fights will play out, and to tell you the truth, neither do we,” said Jorge Masvidal, CEO of Gamebred Boxing. “We have no idea if wisdom beats youth in the Roy Jones vs Anthony Pettis fight, we have no idea who wins between one of the greatest strikers in MMA history, Vitor Belfort, against the former BJJ World Champion, Jacare Souza. We can all sit and make assumptions about what we think will happen between Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens, but you know what they say about assumptions. If there’s one thing we can promise and deliver on is that there will be sheer violence and sweet science. Bottom line, you’re just gonna have to tune in April 1st to find out.”

“I can’t think of a time we’ve seen five former World Champion from two different sports on 1 fight card,” said Dean Toole, President of Gamebred Boxing. “The best thing about this entire event is the eyeballs on the young incredible talent coming up. Undefeated prospects like Luis Feliciano, Devin Cushing and Javier Zamarron will really showcase our mission statement here at Gamebred Boxing and that’s to build new stars and promote upcoming talent. We want to build our own roster and have those fighters eventually headlining these big events. On Saturday night they’ll get an opportunity to steal the show.”

The pay-per-view can be purchased through InDEMAND, PPV.com and UFC Fight Pass PPV, with tickets to the live event available through FiservForum.com and Ticketmaster.com.  Additional event details will be announced shortly.

Several preliminary bouts are also on tap, headed up by former UFC and BKFC fighter Joe Riggs taking on fellow UFC alum Markus Perez in a six-round cruiserweight bout. Riggs replaces UFC vet Paul Daley who was forced to withdraw.

Also scheduled is a double pro debut between female fighters, as Vegas via Vietnam’s Bi Nguyen will face Myrtle Beach via Vietnam’s Andy Nguyen in a four-round bantamweight contest. This will be the rubber match between the two MMA competitors turned boxers with each previously claiming a victory over the other.

Rounding out the preliminary action will be a female four-round lightweight bout, as MMA fighters Danielle Wynn and Danielle Cohen will meet, with Cohen making her pro debut, while Wynn is 0-1 in boxing. Wisconsin southpaw Javier “El Guerito” Zamarron (2-0, 2 KOs) will take on debuting South Carolinian, MMA competitor Roberto Armas in a four-round super featherweight matchup.

Lastly, Florida’s Cade Howell (3-1, 3 KOs) will appear in a four-round welterweight bout vs. an opponent that is TBA.

VIDEO: ROY JONES JR., ANTHONY PETTIS & JORGE MASVIDAL VIRTUAL PRESS CONFERENCE PREVIEWING GAMEBRED BOXING

ROY JONES JR., ANTHONY PETTIS & JORGE MASVIDAL VIRTUAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES PREVIEWING GAMEBRED BOXING EVENT

MILWAUKEE – March 15, 2023 – Combat sport legends Roy Jones Jr. and Anthony Pettis previewed their upcoming pro boxing clash during a virtual press conference Wednesday before they go toe-to-toe on Saturday, April 1 headlining the “Gamebred Boxing 4” pay-per-view event from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee in an event presented by Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing.

The pay-per-view can be purchased through InDEMAND, PPV.com and UFC Fight Pass PPV, with tickets to the live event available through FiservForum.comAdditional event details will be announced shortly.

In the main event, the Boxing Hall of Famer Jones and the former UFC and WEC World Champion Pettis will go toe-to-toe in an intriguing clash of two of combat sports’ most skilled, accomplished and popular champions, as Milwaukee’s Pettis looks to put on a memorable performance for his hometown fans.

Here is what the virtual press conference participants had to say Wednesday:

ROY JONES JR.

“I wanted to fight Anderson Silva back in the day, but it kept getting pushed to the side. When they told me about the Pettis fight, it was intriguing. He’s done things in MMA that no one has ever done. To face someone else with the same kind of creative mind, I couldn’t say no to it.

“He’s different and he’s very creative with his style. He knows what he’s doing. He’s sparring with guys like former world champion Caleb Plant. That’s the right kind of sparring. He’s not playing boxing, he’s serious about it.

“I feel like I was the first person to come up with the crossover boxing vs. MMA fight idea, but I never got to do it. This was the perfect opportunity. I know that he’s gonna go hard with his boxing, because he’s facing one of the greats. If I were playing Michael Jordan one-on-one, I’d put everything into it.

“My game is to help put on an awesome card for the people. My goal in boxing has always been to give the people what they want to see.

“I love the fact that I get to fight in a place I’ve never been. They have the Greek Freak [Giannis Antetokounmpo] there, and we’re both freaks in the ring, so why not make it happen? When you get the opportunity, you gotta shoot, and that’s what we do.

“I’m older, but I’m still wise. What better way for him to learn boxing than against someone who knows basically everything about the sport?”

ANTHONY PETTIS

“It’s crazy to be in this position and be fighting Roy Jones Jr. in my first boxing fight. This is a challenge I’ve been waiting for. You can’t say no to an opportunity like this. This is the kind of challenge that wakes me up every morning and makes me want to bring it.

“I’m just straight boxing now. I’m finding the best boxers I can spar with here in Las Vegas. I’m living the lifestyle. How could you not be motivated when facing a guy like Roy? I come to win fights and that’s the goal April 1.

“I’ve done so much in MMA, but I grew up watching fights like Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad. Watching that is why I got into combat sports. Now that I have this opportunity, I’m hiring the right guys and doing everything I need to do to take this 100% seriously.

“I’ve been working a lot to adjust to fighting at a bigger weight. I was already in fight shape coming into camp, because this is just such a great opportunity. I feel like I’m getting used to the pressure that he’s gonna bring. I’m gonna use the smarts and skills I’ve accumulated over the years and try to put it on him.

“If you look at my UFC career, I fought the best of the best. That’s exactly what I’m bringing to my boxing career. These are the kind of challenges I want.

“I’m testing myself against one of the greats. So this would be huge for MMA as a sport. I’m not going to let this slip through my fingers. I think you’re going to be surprised by my skillset.”

JORGE MASVIDAL, CEO of Gamebred Boxing

“I’m so pumped. I can’t believe I’m looking at Roy and Pettis and it’s all coming to life. I remember Dean and I were having a conversation about this happening months ago, and now it’s happening.

“I’ve been watching Roy since I was a kid, and being a Florida guy, we really go hard for him. We’re so happy to be able to put this together. Pettis is one of the greatest 155 pounders I’ve ever seen. These styles are a great mesh, because they both know how to be flashy.

“I can’t believe this flight is about to take place. Props to everyone for stepping up, especially the fighters, because if it weren’t for them it wouldn’t be happening.

“I know Pettis has been focusing on striking for a while now, and I can’t wait to see how one of my MMA brothers does against one of the greatest boxers to ever live.

“We just want to put on the best cards possible and that’s what this feels like. After a long week’s work, am I gonna shell out the money for this card? When I look at this card, I’d definitely pay for this. This is history for any combat sports enthusiast.”

DEAN TOOLE, President of Gamebred Boxing

“This is only the second event ever that UFC Fight Pass has promoted through a digital pay-per-view, with the other being Mayweather vs. McGregor. That says a lot about how big this event is.

“This fight card is absolutely stacked. We have UFC and Strikeforce world champions, UFC veterans and one of the greatest boxers to ever do it, just to name a few. We have an incredible lineup and I can’t wait to hear from these amazing fighters today.

“We’re also going to have real boxing prospects and up-and-comers on this card. These types of fights will put eyeballs on upcoming boxers who will eventually be headlining these cards.”

PROBOX TV’S LAST CHANCE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALS THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 5 & STREAMED LIVE GLOBALLY ON PROBOX TV and the PROBOX TV APP LOSERS GO HOME

PLANT CITY, Florida (August 2, 2022): ProBox TV’s “Last Chance Tournament” 140 lb. semi-finals will take place on Friday, August 5, beginning at 7 pm ET at the ProBox Events Center in Plant City, Florida and will be streamed live at PROBOXTV.com or the ProBox TV app (available here).

A ProBox TV monthly subscription is $1.99.

ProBox TV was founded by Roy Jones Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Antonio Tarver, Paulie Malignaggi and Garry Jonas. Miguel Cotto recently joined the team.  As always, the ‘Big 4’ will be calling the action from ringside.

The Last Chance Tournament kicked off on May 20, with the eight boxers chosen based on having a top amateur trajectory, where fate had not been on the side of their once promising professional careers. The winner of the tournament will get another, or Last Chance, at achieving their dreams of becoming a world champion.

The 140-pound semi-final bouts are scheduled for ten-rounds, and the combatants are:

  • Kendo Castañeda (18-5, 8 KOs) of San Antonio, Texas vs.
  • Joseph Fernandez (15-4-3, 5 KOs), Saint Petersburg, FL.
  • Antonio “Toño” Moran (27-5-1, 19 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico vs
  • Michael Dutchover (16-2, 10 KOs) of Midland, Texas

CASTANEDA: “I think Fernandez is a solid fighter. Stand up man. I plan to attack the fight on simply doing what I know best and that’s fight toe to toe until one of us goes night-night. If he can’t trade punches with me until one of us goes to sleep, then he is the one that will go to sleep. Period. Demon Time.”

FERNANDEZ: “Just be smart and fight my fight. I don’t get into details on the plan, but adjustments will be made during the fight to make it easier fight. I’m about taking advantages, not giving them.”

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ Breaks down Castañeda vs Fernandez

“Kendo is a fighter with a lot of heart. He won the quarter finals by first round KO. He carries San Antonio, Texas on his shoulders. However, Joseph Fernandez has the hometown advantage. He proved in the quarter final he deserved a Last Chance. Winner goes to the final and unfortunately, the other one goes home. Match-ups of Mexico vs Puerto Rico never disappoint.”

MORAN:  ” Pues ya estoy preparado para llevarme la victoria en la pelea, solo es ajustar el peso y listo, creo que Dutchover es un boxeador que se mueve mucho arriba del urna y hay qe atracarlo a la distancia”

DUTCHOVER: “I think Moran is a good fighter and our styles will make for a great fight the fans will love, I plan to break him down mentally round by round, first bell to last.”

ROY JONES JR Breaks Down MORAN vs DUTCHOVER

“To me, this is the most intriguing matchup in the semifinals. They’re both very credible fighters and both showed real good qualities in their quarterfinal matches. So, I’m eager to see who can outwit who.”

In the May 20 quarter finals, former WBO Latino and WBA Fedecentro Welterweight Champion Moran beat Jeffrey Torres (now 10-2, 6 KOs) via unanimous decision, while “West Texas Warrior” Dutchover defeated Clarence Booth (now 21-5, 13 KOs) by split decision.

In the other pair of quarters, Castañeda scored a first-round knockout victory over Sonny Frederickson (now 21-6, 14 KOs), while Fernandez upset Zhiming Wang (now 11-4, 3 KOs) via unanimous decision.

MIGUEL COTTO

“We had been in talks with ProBox for a couple of months. They are people that know boxing and without hesitation we decided to become a part of this new platform.  They know what they’re doing and have a very solid platform for boxing and we’re expecting a great collaboration. It gives us the platform to be able to do boxing as well as serving as a workshop to be able to do right by the boxers that are signed to the promotion. We will also begin to recruit boxers and make alliance with them as we start to work together.

“This is not only going to be a platform based in Puerto Rico but will also have the opportunity to bring it into Mexico with Juan Manuel Marquez and workshops there to develop boxers. We plan to bring fighters from other Latin countries, such as the Dominican to Puerto Rico to join our company.

“I am very excited about project and eagerly awaiting the start and hoping that the fans join in on the excitement as well.“

On being together with Juan Manuel Marquez: ‘It’s great every time we see each other and we enjoy the company. Juan Manuel has his life in Orlando where he lives and I have my life over here in Puerto Rico but every time that we have come together it has been great as we share the common ground of Boxing.”

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ

“We are here to show our support for not just one event but many events we’re going be having here in Puerto Rico and to be working with great colleagues such as Paulie Malignaggi , Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones Jr. And especially now with Miguel Cotto and Cotto Promotions. That we have come together to support the sport of boxing and the fighters who are the ones that leave everything in the ring.

We are here in Puerto Rico to support boxing.  We will be counseling the up-and-coming youth and we’re going work hard for the true lovers of the sport, which I believe there is a lot of here in Puerto Rico. I am amazed how in Puerto Rico and in Mexico love the sport of boxing. In Mexico we know that soccer is the preferred sport but now I believe that boxing he’s taking over.

ProBox TV is going to go out there and support all the fighters and support Boxing and above all we’re going to bring quality boxing to all the fans. In this case, in Puerto Rico, for 19 August we are going to work with Miguel Cotto and I am just filled with happiness, and eager to be present and do these great works for the sport of Boxing.”

GARRY JONAS, CEO PROBOX TV

ProBox TV originated to be a boxing-only streaming service and is put together by the fighters for the fans.  In collaboration with the founders, we are putting together evenly matched, fan-friendly action fights. The supporting content we provide is to develop fan engagement.

ProBox TV knows the fans needed an all-boxing channel dedicated to the sport of boxing that is distributed worldwide in multiple languages. ProBox TV is starting at the prospect/contender level events and plan to grow into championship events as the fan base and the company grows. ProBox TV is founded by great fighters who are also great commentators. These guys are well suited to deliver a level of boxing content the fans deserve and will appreciate.”

Roy Jones Jr. to corner Shady Gamhour against Steve Rolls in Toronto!

TORONTO – On July 21, Toronto will be home to another great event by Lee Baxter Promotions. In May of this year, Lee Baxter Promotions held the first Canadian Boxing event to be broadcasted on the global sports entertainment platform, DAZN. A great success, as Bryan Acosta headlined the event and won the WBC Continental Americas Featherweight Title in an action-packed show. Lee Baxter Promotions are now back with another great card full of 50/50 fights and exciting prospects.
A brilliant co-feature sees a great 10-round matchup between Toronto’s Steve Rolls (21-2 12KO’s) and the undefeated Shady Gamhour (13-0 9KO’s). The fight was planned pre-pandemic, but unfortunately it didn’t go ahead. Now, the match is on – and we can’t wait to deliver to the fans in Toronto. Last time out Rolls took on the hard-hitting Edgar Berlanga, in his own city in front of a packed Madison Square Garden. A brilliant performance by Rolls lands him another huge fight. Shady Gamhour has stopped 9 of his 13 opponents as a professional, the other 4 he won on points – expect fireworks.Legendary Roy Jones Jr. will attend REBEL Entertainment Complex as he corners Shady Gamhour. Gamhour will look to use the experience that the Hall of Fame boxer brings to his corner. Jones Jr also trains former IBO Super Middleweight World Champion, Chris Eubank Jr.The main event on the evening will have the WBC Jr NABF Light Heavyweight Title up for grabs! Fan favourite Nick Fantuazzi (11-0 5KO’s) takes on Michal Loniewski (3-3 1KO) as they battle it out for the WBC title. Fantuazzi’s last performance against Darren Fletcher was a dominant and convincing win, Fantuazzi will look for a similar performance again to take the belt home with him. Fantuazzi was originally boxing for the Canadian Title but due to injury his opponent had to pull of the show. Loniewki’s last two fights were both in the UK against two British prospects. A treat for the fans as the two men put it all on the line for the title.

Also featuring on the card will be Amanda Galle (6-0), the Canadian Super Bantamweight Champion, as she takes on Jaqueline Mucio Munoz (7-10) in an interesting matchup that could leave either boxer with the win. A professional debut for James Hughes, as the former Canada National Team member shows what he has to offer in the professional ranks. Hughes takes on Toronto’s Mikhail Miller (3-6-1). Last up, welterweight prospect Joshuah Lupia (5-0 5KOs) is back in the ring after a long absence due to a tragic incident that nearly cost Lupia his leg. It’s great to see that Lupia has recovered and we all look forward to seeing him back in action.

Destiny brought together Roy Jones, Jr. & his protégé Andrew “White Lightning” Murphy

LAS VEGAS (July 7, 2022) – Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr.’s protégé, undefeated middleweight prospect Andrew “White Lightning” Murphy (5-0, 4 KOs), will be fighting at home for the first time as a professional on July 14th in the 8-round, co-feature event on the RJJ Boxing on UFC FIGHT PASS card, at Yakima Legends Casino in Toppenish, Washington.

Murphy, 22, faces the top test of his young pro career, Isiah Jones (9-6, 3 KOs), of Detroit, in the Irish American’s first scheduled 8-round bout, for the vacant National Boxing Association (NBA) Americas Middleweight Championship.

Murphy-Jones will be one of four fights slated to be streamed live and exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS®, the world’s leading digital subscription service for combat sports, starting at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. To sign-up for UFC FIGHT PASS, please visit www.ufcfightpass.com.

Two years ago, Murphy packed his bags and moved 2600 miles across the country from Toppenish to Pensacola (FL), where Jones is based, and how they eventually connected can best be chalked up as destiny.

First, Murphy attended Jones’ last pro fight on February 8, 2018, in Pensacola, watching his idol in action, and after the show he waited around outside the venue to catch a glimpse of RJ. Instead, he got the thrill of his life when, after talking to a member of Team Jones, Murphy was brought inside to meet living legend Jones.

In 2019, RJJ Boxing on UFC FIGHT PASS promoted a show in Murphy’s hometown of Toppenish at Yakima Legends Casino, where Murphy met Jones once again. He was formally introduced to Jones by Roy’s former teacher, Marlene Cousins, whose daughter Holly Collins was a member of the Toppenish City Council. At that time, Murphy was a successful amateur boxer (32-4, USA rated No. 4), who had spoken in front of the council regarding PAL funding.

“None of this makes sense…..it was destiny,” Murphy talked about having Jones as his head trainer. “When I was 16, my mother moved to Pensacola – I don’t know why – and two years later, she asked me to move there to train. I had a place to live. I like it here and because of all the military people it’s like a city of adopted people like me.”

Rather than stick around to try and make the US 2020 Olympic Boxing Team with no guarantees, advised by Jones, Murphy decided to turn pro, which he officially did on his 21st birthday (March 27, 2021) in Mexico. He has fought twice in Mexico, two times in Alabama, and once in Atlanta. Fighting at home, though, is a dream come true for the kid from Toppenish with a bonafide superstar in his corner.

“This fight is a big deal for me,” Murphy explained. “There’s not a lot of positivity in Toppenish. To be successful, so far, and to have an NBA title shot in my hometown means a lot. A lot of my friends will be there and hopefully some kids will be inspired. Even as an amateur there weren’t too many opportunities for me to fight at home in such a small town. I’ve been a road warrior so far as a pro, but when I learned about this opportunity for me to fight at home, I said, let’s go! And I’m fighting there on July 14th.”

The Irish, of course, are known for their fighting spirit. Murphy isn’t 100-percent sure of his Irish ancestry but with a name like Murphy, his fanbase should grow exponentially as fans all over the world discover this potential rising star.

Being guided by one of boxing’s all-time greats could be intimidating for many young boxers, but Murphy and Jones have developed a special relationship.

“My dad told Roy to take care of me like I was his son,” Murphy noted. “I look like him now as a father figure. We really have a close relationship. I like working on his farm with him and going fishing. I’ve learned how to use my brain, the art of war. He was so athletic, I think that (Jones’ ring IQ) was overlooked. More than anything that’s what he passes on to his fighter, and that’s where the magic will happen.”

Unbeaten Quinton Randall (9-0-1, 2 KOs), fighting out of Houston, headlines against Ivan “Cobra” Pandzic 14-1-1 (8 KOs) in the 8-round main event. The reigning WBC USNBC champion, 31-year-old Randall was a celebrated amateur who captured a gold medal at the prestigious 2016 USA Nationals, silver at the 2017 USA Nationals and 2017 Pan American Games.

Washington State intra-state rivals William Hernandez (8-2, 5 KOs), of Burien, and Wapato super lightweight Magarito Hernandez (2-2-1) – no relations – square off an 8-round bout, and middleweights Joseph Aguilar (2-0-1, 1 KO) meets Alarenz Reynolds (1-1) in a 4-round match to open the UFC FIGHT PASS live stream.

Fighting on the non-UFC FIGHT PASS segment of the card are welterweight Chris Johnson (7-0, 1 KO) vs. Devonte McDonald (1-1), lightweight Bryan Sanchez (1-0, 1 KO) vs. pro debuting Dyllon Cervantes, and light heavyweight Nick Mills (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Kelton Hall (2-1, 1 KO).

Tickets are reasonably priced at $90.00, $65.00, and $45.00 and available for purchase on site at the Legends Gift Shop, or by going online to https://www.ticketmaster.com/legends-casino-event-center-tickets-toppenish/venue/123450.

Doors open at 5 p.m. PT, first fight at 6 p.m. PT, and UFC FIGHT PASS starts at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT).?

Date & Venue announced for WCBS tournament championship final

LAS VEGAS (March 28, 2022) – Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions (RJJ Boxing) and World Cup Boxing Series (WCBS) have jointly announced the date and venue for the championship final of the inaugural “WCBS 4-Man Lightweight Tournament.”

The two finalists, Luis “Koreano” Torres (15-0, 10 KOs) and Irving “Poderoso” Castillo (12-2, 8 KOs), will throw-down June 2nd in the main event at Palenque de la Expo in Obregón, Sonora, Mexico.

“The anticipation has been building and we are all very excited that the tournament final is almost here,” RJJ Boxing president Lisa Veltre commented. “We’re happy to be returning to Obregon. I’d like to thank our partners for this tournament: Guy Taylor, Terry Hollan, and Emanual Romo.”

“June 2nd is going to be an electric night of action,” WCBS creator/matchmaker Guy Taylor said. “Luis Torres is quickly becoming a major attraction in his hometown of Obregón, Sonora, Mexico. More than 2,100 fans came to the semifinals, and we are expecting a near sellout for the finale.

“The winner of our ‘4-Man Lightweight Tournament’ will take a huge leap from prospect to contender in the very rich lightweight division.”

In tournament semifinals action held this past February at the same venue, Torres knocked out Rodolfo “Rudy” Flores (14-6, 6 KOs) in round four, after dropping him in the second and third rounds, while Castillo took an 8-round majority decision over Isai “Gaga” Hernandez (11-3-1, 7 KOs) to set-up his showdown. Pre-tournament favorite Torres, 20, will be headlining again in his hometown of Obregon.

Torres vs. Castillo will be contested in a 10-round match and, if needed, an “overtime” round will be held to declare a winner in the event of a draw upon the conclusion of the scheduled distance. The tournament is sanctioned by the World Boxing Council (WBC). The winner will become the new WBC Latino Lightweight Champion, as well as receive a world rating from the WBC.

The WCBS “4-Man Tournament” semifinals matchups have been announced: Luis “Koreano” Torres (14-0, 9 KOs) vs. Rodolfo “Rudy” Flores (14-5, 6 KOs), Alberto “El Alacan” Ruiz (11-4, 8 KOs) vs. Isai “Gaga” Hernandez (11-2-2, 7 KOs).

The 20-year-old Torres, a former WBC Youth Silver lightweight champion, is the pre-tournament favorite.

Flores, 26, has notable victories, both by way of decision, over Jesus Acosta Zazueta (16-5-2) and Jairo Lopez (18-5).

Ruiz upset 15-0 WBC Latino Lightweight Champion Jair Valtierra by way of a fifth-round knockout to capture the crown last August, which he has since lost in a non-title fight, which left this coveted title vacated for the tournament victor.

Excluding a “no-contest” in his last fight against 13-0-1 Francisco Lopez, Hernandez goes into the tournament having won five of his last six fights.

Torres and Ruiz will be fighting at home in Obregon.

Undefeated 19-year-old prospect Jorge “Jorgito” Cota (6-0, 4 KOs), the youngest in the famed Mexican fightin’ Montiel family, led by his grandfather Fernando Montiel, battles Guatemalan challenger Rene “Kampana” de Leon Mazariegos (7-3, 4 KOs), in a scheduled 6-rounder.

Cota, who was 140-10 as an amateur, is following in the footsteps of his Montiel (54-6-2, 39 KOs from 1996-2016), a 5-time, 3-division (flyweight, super flyweight, and bantamweight) World champion.

Co-founder of Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions Selected for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame

LAS VEGAS (December 21, 2021) – Boxing legend Roy Jones, Jr. is universally regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound prizefighters in boxing history. In June, he’ll be heading to Canastota, New York, for his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF).

The IBHOF’s Class of 2022 inductees will be inducted during June 9-12 in Canastota, New York, along with the postponed Class of 2021 and 2020 formal inductions due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“It is one of the highest honors ever you can get to be placed in the International Boxing Hall of Fame,” Jones spoke about being selected for induction. “I have the upmost respect for the Hall of Fame. I would like to thank them for inducting me and everybody else in my career throughout my whole life, starting with the days with my father (Roy Jones, Sr.), to the days with Coach Merk (Alton Merkerson), along with ‘Whop’ (Valerice Cooper). The list goes on. I thank everybody who was involved and hope that I didn’t leave too many people out.

“It takes a group of people to build a community not just one person. It took a lot of people to build my career to what I became. I thank God mostly for it. We’re trying to build the future champions of tomorrow. I feel like now that I’m in the Hall of Fame as a boxer, my next goal is to become a Hall of Fame trainer. Peace be to you all.”

Jones, 52, has just about done it all in boxing and more as a fighter, trainer, promoter, actor, color commentator, and rapper. He is the undisputed all-around king of boxing!

One of the most prolific amateur boxers in the world, Jones compiled a reported 121-13 record, including gold medal performances at the 1984 National Junior Olympics and 1986 & 1987 National Golden Gloves Tournaments. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Jones reached the championship final of the light middleweight division against Park Si-Hun, of South Korea. Jones suffered arguably the worst decision in boxing history, losing 3-2, despite out-punching his opponent, 86 to 32 landed punches, and he was forced to settle for a silver medal. Even his opponent admitted that Jones won their fight and the AIBA later suspended the three judges who selected the hometown fighter as the winner. Jones was selected as the Val Barker Trophy winner as the best boxer of the 1988 Olympics and, due to controversy, the scoring system for Olympic boxing was changed, replacing the 20-point must system with electronic scoring, and the five judges were suspended.

Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Jones went on to become a 10-time, 4-division (heavyweight, light heavyweight, super middleweight, and middleweight) World champion as a professional, finishing with an amazing 66-9 (47 KOs) pro record, especially considering the elite caliber opponents he fought during his career (1989-2018). He was 22-3 (14 KOs) in World title fights, defeating a Who’s Who of World champion opponents: Jorge Vaca, Jorge Fernando Castro, Bernard Hopkins, Thulani Malinga, James Toney, Vinny Pazienza (Paz), Eric Lucas, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin, Virgil Hill, Lou DelValle, Otis Grant, Reggie Johnson, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Clinton Woods, John Ruiz, Antonio Tarver, Felix Trinidad, and Jeff Lacy.

In 2013, Jones co-founded Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions (RJJ Boxing), and the Las Vegas-based promotional company has handled and promoted some of the most talented boxers in the world such as 2-time World bantamweight champion Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko, 2-time World junior bantamweight title challenger “Mighty” Aston Palicte, Interim World super featherweight titlist Bryan “El Toquito” Vazquez (37-4, 20), Connor “The Kid” Coyle, John “The Phenom” Vera (18-1, 11 KOs), Kendo “Tremendo” Castaneda, Randy Moreno, Max “The Baby-Faced Assassin” Ornelas, Ray “Valentino” Ximenez, Juan “Just Business” Barajas, and former WBC” Youth Heavyweight Champion Alexander “The Great” Flores.

Pro boxers Jones currently trains include Chris Eubank, Jr. (31-2, 23 KOs), Michael Williams, Jr. (19-1, 12 KOs), Brian Perrella (17-3, 14 KOs), Andrew Murphy (4-0, 3 KOs), Kevin Newman (12-3-1, 7 KOs), Ikrau Kerwat (10-3, 5 KOs), Glenn Hagler (6-1-2, 4 KOs), and 4-time national amateur champion Tika Hemingway (1-0).

In 2012, RJJ Boxing president Lisa Veltre first met Roy, who expressed his interest in becoming involved as a boxing promoter, and RJJ Boxing was soon formed in Las Vegas.

“Roy is the biggest prankster,” Veltre revealed. “He loves playing jokes. He is the most down to earth person to partner with in business. We’ve become good friends. I’ve learned so much from him about boxers, the business of boxing, and what goes on in and out of the squared circle.

“I never really look at him from a business aspect because we are personal friends – Roy became mor of a mentor to me – so I never thought of what it meant for our company when he was selected for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. I knew it was a huge honor, but it had been on the horizon for a few years (until he became eligible). I’m elated! It’s so amazing. If all goes right, schedule-wise because things change so quickly in boxing, we want to be in Canastota Jim to support him when he receives the highest honor in boxing.”

Well known boxing media personality James Smitty” Smith has known since the 1980’s, first as a guest on longtime Radio Show Smitty’s Sportstalk, as well as a guest on Smith’s television show, IN THIS CORNER. “Smitty,” who has served as host of the annual IBHOF Induction Weekend since 2016, in addition to working the last four years for RJJ Boxing as its color commentator on UFC FIGHT PASS.

“I knew when I first laid my pugilistic eyes on Roy Jones. Jr. at the 1988 Summer Olympics that he was destined for Superstardom as a professional prize fighter,” Smith remarked. “Physically, Roy is as gifted as anyone who ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves, but he also packaged so much showmanship into his In-ring and out of Ring endeavors. He is the embodiment of what a Boxing Hall of Famer is and should be. He was born to someday reside in Canastota. It will be one of my great honors to welcome him into the hallowed grounds of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, especially because of my relationship with Roy, who I’m proud to call my friend.”

Going into the IBHOF in his first year of eligibility was an unquestioned lock for Roy Jones, Jr.. The lone debate is how high near the top he rates on boxing’s mythical list of all-time greats.

HEAVYWEIGHT HOT SHOT TOMMY WELCH BENEFITS FROM ROY JONES JR TIPS

Brighton, UK (1 November 2021) Fast-rising heavyweight ace Tommy Welch has not only been trading punches with a Fury but has also been picking up tips from a certain Roy Jones Jr ahead of his next fight.

The undefeated talent has been sparring with world-title contender Hughie Fury as he prepares for his latest appearance on the title-packed Hennessy Sports show on Saturday, 13th November, at the Coventry Skydome Arena, live and free on Channel 5.

Welch uses the Eubank Gym in Brighton and with Chris Eubank Jr bringing in Roy Jones Jr – the only fighter in boxing history to win a World Heavyweight title after starting his career as a super-welterweight – as his trainer, the unbeaten banger admits it has been an honour to have a living boxing legend offering advice.

“I’ve been next to him [Jones Jr] in the gym for the last four, five, six weeks with Chris Eubank,” he said.

“That has been really cool. I’ve been learning some great stuff from him. What a legend.

“Roy was coming in a good hour before Chris would come in and I’d be training. He would pull up his chair and you could just see his eyes were at work.

“I could feel his eyes watching me and thinking. He was pulling up on all sorts of things. If I was moving from the ring to the bags, he would follow me, pull up his chair next to the bag and watching my feet, then watch my hands.

“He has a great aura and a great energy around him. It is amazing to know Roy Jones Jr, but to have him giving me advice and telling me things, was genuinely a privilege.”

Welch is already under the guidance of his dad Scott, who was the British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion and challenged for a world title back in the 1990s.

For this latest camp they were joined by another stella father-and-son team – Peter and Hughie Fury.

And while the two fathers watched on, the sons went at it for three days’ solid sparring and of course, neither took it lightly.

“It was fantastic. Hughie is a gentleman, his father Peter is a gentleman and they’re fighting men,” said Tommy.

“To be in camp with Hughie was great. And the spars were absolutely full-on. I won’t sit here and go on about stories from sparring, but it was genuinely a great experience.

“I respect the Fury’s, I really do. I like their work ethic and it was a great chance for me to feed off a world-title contender.

“Hughie is one of those fighters in the shadows. Him and his dad just keep their heads down and just get on with business. There’s no flashiness about them.

“I know cousin Tyson is the number one in the world, but even he was an almost hated fighter at the start but worked his socks off to turn everyone on to him.

“Hughie is a world contender, but he’s still on the up. He’s not like his cousin, who is sparing of course, but I guarantee, he has done all his hard work to get to the very top, so is now just perfecting it.

“Hughie still wants to learn, is working every day and wants to grind his socks off. I am doing the same. To be in camp with him was just great.”

Gold Fix: Time to give Jones and Carbajal what they fairly won 33 years ago

By Norm Frauenheim

Amateur boxing is talking reform. Again. With another Olympics just a few weeks away, the sport’s international ruling body says it plans far-reaching change for what it promises will be “a fair fight.’’

Fair enough. Easy to do, too. The body, AIBA, took an opportunity to grab the bully pulpit this week with an international news conference less than a month before opening ceremonies. Trouble is, AIBA isn’t supposed to have anything to do with boxing at the delayed Tokyo Games.

The Olympic czars in Switzerland have ordered AIBA to get its house in order. That means cleaning up a reported $16-million debt, a mob-like history of bureaucrats and bosses and decades full of corrupt judging.

Olympic boxing makes the scarred pro game look like Mister Clean. Hard to do. Yet, it hangs on, pushed to the edge of the Olympic fringe because of its long history and its universality. Everybody fights, and everybody has been fighting since at least the ancient Greeks. It’s there, in spite of itself.

But it’s not clear how many people watch anymore. Exasperation at boxing’s failure to root out the corruption forced NBC to drop it as a featured part of its telecast schedule. It’s embarrassing and has been since Roy Jones Jr. got robbed 33 years ago in Seoul. The world saw it. Then, boxing still generated an audience, one that remembered 1976 and a Montreal Olympics that starred Sugar Ray Leonard.

The Jones theft, a decision that cost him the gold medal, might as well be forever framed in yellow-crime tape. It was defining, for him and the Olympics. It was no coincidence, perhaps, that Jones was part of the news conference from Lausanne. He appeared alongside AIBA’s new president, Umar Kremlev, a Russian. Remember, Jones is Russian, too. At least, he has a Russian passport. The American was granted citizenship by Vladimir Putin in 2015.

Whatever the connection, Jones belonged there. Despite all of his great moments in the pro ring and his long run atop the pound-for-pound ratings, he will be remembered for what happened at the 1988 Olympics. His voice is the key to any discussion about Olympic boxing and its troubled path to irrelevance. Say it in Russian. Say it In English. Roy Jones Jr. said it all this week.

“Whenever I see that, it feels like yesterday,’’ Jones said of the photo that shows the ref raising South Korean Park Si-hun’s hand in victory for the light-middleweight gold. “And not in a great way.

“All the judges that were part of that decision were crooked. They’ve all been banned. And I know they were not the only ones.

“So, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The judges were crooked. The whole world knows it. Even my opponent agrees I won the fight. But how come I don’t have my gold medal? How can you beat someone so bad and not get the gold medal, and they don’t go back and fix it? Because I’m still here. And I still earned it. And we have to make sure nothing like that ever happens again.’’

The key is in Jones question: Why-oh-why doesn’t he have the gold? More than three decades have come and gone. Jones was awarded the Val Barker Trophy, the award for being the most outstanding boxer at the Seoul Games. In 2002, the IOC honored him with something called The Olympic Order.

But never the gold.

Kremlev said this week that he wants Jones to finally get that gold. For Olympic boxing, it’s a beginning, really the only beginning.

All of the talk about reform is hollow – Fool’s gold – until Olympic boxing gives Jones his moment on the podium’s top pedestal. In the years since 1988, enough has been revealed to give not only Jones the gold. Give one to Michael Carbajal, too. Carbajal’s loss to Bulgarian Ivailo Hristov was just the beginning of rigged judging in a scheme that included an officer in the former East German police force (Stasi). Years after the Seoul Games and subsequent collapse of East Germany, Stasi files were found to include allegations that the fights were fixed and bribes were paid.

Carbajal, of Phoenix, fought and lost on Oct. 1. Jones lost the next day. The night before the Carbajal fight, talk circulated that the fix was in. A shouting match erupted between the American coaching staff and members of the committee responsible for assigning the judges.

Stan Hamilton, a judge-referee from Knoxville, Tenn., told the Los Angeles Times about a contentious 2 a.m. meeting. Hamilton told sportswriter Earl Gustkey that two judges, Hiouad Larbi of Morocco and Alberto Duran of Uruguay, were supposed to have been suspended for questionable work early in the Olympics. He said neither was eligible to work any gold-medal bout. But they worked both the Carbajal and Jones losses – five judges-to-zero against Carbajal and 3-2 against Jones.

Before the meeting ended, Hamilton said, committee member Vladimir Gordienko, of the former Soviet Union, left and ran into Jim Fox, then executive director of the U.S. amateur federation.

“Gordienko was angry,” Hamilton said. “He found Fox and told him: ‘You will lose, 5-0, to the Bulgarian.’ ‘’

That’s what happened. First, Carbajal, then Jones, both losing with judges working while suspended. Carbajal and Jones moved on, both to Hall-of-Fame careers. Neither Hristov nor Park fought again, amateur or pro.

It was the fix that never got fixed. Until it does, there will never be a new beginning for Olympic boxing.

A fair fight is possible, but first give Jones and Carbajal the gold they fairly won.Attachments area

(April 7, 2021) – Hard-hitting southpaw Bryant “Goodfella” Perrella detailed his current training camp, including what he’s learned from his new trainer, all-time great Roy Jones Jr., and previewed his upcoming showdown against former world champion Tony “Superbad” Harrison before they square off in the FOX PBC Fight Night main event and on FOX Deportes Saturday, April 17 from Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles.

“After my last fight I went on a bit of a sparring tour,” said Perrella, detailing the origins of how he linked up with his new trainer. “I ended up sparring with some of Roy’s guys in Pensacola, and afterward he let me stay to soak up some more knowledge. The rest is history. It was an easy decision to stay out there and grow under one of the best fighters ever. It’s like going off to a university. Every day I come in with my notepad and pen ready.”

Perrella will return to the ring after suffering a disappointing defeat in his last fight in February 2020 on FOX. Perrella led on all three scorecards heading into the final round against Abel Ramos, but was stopped in the waning moments of the round. For Perrella, he’s learned from the experience, and combined with his new trainer, believes it will all end up helping him long term.

“Everything that happened with the Ramos fight has been addressed and changed,” said Perrella. “That lost sent me on the journey that led me to this new weight class and training with Roy. Everything happens for a reason, as long as you look for that reason and have faith in it. That reason has been shown to me in so many ways and it’s a huge blessing.”

After spending a majority his career fighting at 147 pounds, Perrella will fight at the super welterweight limit for the first time since his third pro fight. For the six-foot, one-inch Perrella, he believes that moving up in weight full-time will open up different aspects of his game.

“The decision to move up in weight was because of how I felt in the Ramos fight,” said Perrella. “Making 147 pounds was taking a lot out of me. I performed well, but I know how I felt in that ring. I have so much more to give as a fighter. That was really only 30% of me. Making weight was coming at a cost and I no longer thought it was helping me.

“I know these fighters at 154 are bigger and stronger, but so am I. I’m going to be stronger than ever and I’m going to be ready to tangle. I probably should have been at this weight for a while. I was always a fighter moving down in weight. I still train hard like always, but by not having to worry as much about weight, I’m able to add big layers to my game. With all these changes, I even surprise myself some days with what I can do now. I’m super confident and I can’t wait to bring it all to the ring on fight night.”

Perrella not only finds motivation from returning in a primetime main event, but from having elite opposition in the former 154-pound champion Harrison. Perrella knows that Harrison presents a versatile and difficult task, but is more than up to the challenge in front of him.

“This is a huge opportunity to fight one of the top guys at this weight,” said Perrella. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. It definitely helps motivate me to have this kind of chance on this stage against a fighter like Tony.

“Tony has different layers and dimensions to his game. He can box with his jab and length, but he can also come forward with that high guard. At this level, it’s a game of adjustments. This is going to be an interesting clash of styles. There’s no other southpaw like me. He’s sharp and has experience, but I’m a whole different kind of animal than anything he’s seen.”

With Roy Jones Jr. in his corner, Perrella believes that he has the confidence to not only come out victorious on April 17, but to make this a memorable action fight for fans watching.

“I have a unique approach and now I have Roy passing down his knowledge from his experiences,” said Perrella. “It’s like a shortcut. I’m getting the knowledge handed right to me instead of going through it not knowing what to expect. This matchup is between two strong fighters and the fans can expect an action packed fight from start to finish.”

RJJ BOXING ON UFC FIGHT PASS RESULTS FROM MEXICO

LOS MOCHIA, Sonora, Mexico (April 3, 2021) – Unbeaten Mexican featherweight Alan “Lachorro” Solis captured the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title last Friday night on the RJJ Boxing event, Roy Jones, Jr. Boxing Promotions and De La O Promotions, at Polideportivo Centenario in Los Mochia, Sonora, Mexico.

RJJ Boxing was streamed live and exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS®, the world’s leading digital subscription service for combat RJJ Boxing sports. To sign up for UFC FIGHT PASS, please visit www.ufcfightpass.com.

The 22-year-old Solis (13-0-1, 7 KOs) outboxed his dangerous opponent, Jonathan “El Fenix” Aguilar (19-9, 15 KOs), from start to finish for a unanimous 10-round unanimous decision in the main event. The new WBO featherweight champion stepped up his quality of opposition in Aguilar, who has ring experience against former world super bantamweight champion Angelo Leo, as well as world title challengers Dewayne Beamon and former Ghana Olympian Duke Micah.

In the co-featured event, WBC Continental Latino American welterweight champion Mauicio “Trompas” Pintor (24-4-1, 14 KOs) edged San Antonio welterweight Kendo “Tremendo” Castaneda (17-4, 8 KOs), a former NABA super lightweight titlist, by way of a close, unanimous 8-round decision (77-474, 76-75, 76-75) in a non-title clash. The difference was a 1-point deduction for Castaneda for hitting Pinto, the nephew of Hall of Famer and 2-division world champion Lupe Pintor, in the back during a clinch. Pintor overcame a cut over his left eye from an accidental headbutt in round three. Castaneda suffered his fourth consecutive loss.

WBC Youth Silver lightweight champion Luis “Koreano” Torres (11-0, 8 KOs) kept rolling, stopping Jose “Cuate” Paez (13-2-1, 10 KOs) in the fifth round, when he unloaded a flurry of unanswered punches in their non-title fight. Torres is 4-0 fighting on RJJ Boxing cards in which his opponents entered the ring with an accumulative record of 41-2-1.

Las Vegas flyweight prospect Kevin Urrutia improved to 2-0 as a pro boxer with a devastating third-round knockout of Miguel Angel “Tyson” Vazquez (0-4).
