Ruben “Ace” Torres Training Camp Quotes

SANTA FE SPRINGS, CA (July 20, 2021) – The highly anticipated return of undefeated super lightweight Ruben “Ace” Torres (12-0, 10 KOs) will happen this Sunday, July 26, 2020 as Thompson Boxing Promotions presents 3.2.1 Boxing, a live Pay-Per-View streaming event. Torres will face Oscar Bravo (25-9, 11 KOs), a durable and tough veteran known for giving prospects trouble. Torres will look to get yet another knockout in this 8-round co-main event bout.

The 3.2.1 Boxing 8-round main-event will showcase Michael Dutchover (13-1, 10 KOs), versus Jorge Marron Jr. (18-1, 6 KOs), as well as undefeated featherweight Arnold Dinong (6-0, 1 KO) facing Brandon Cruz (6-1, 4 KOs) in the 6-round opening bout.

Here is what Torres had to say about his upcoming fight with Bravo, training camp and more.

On his recent training camp
“Training camp has been hard but rewarding. I feel like I am building a following, and I’m working hard to continue improving in the gym. My coach Danny Zamora has really helped guide me in the gym and outside of the ring, I am very focused and in the best shape of my life.”

On his matchup with Oscar Bravo
“Oscar Bravo is extremely durable. He has only been stopped once in his career and I am hoping to be the second fighter to do that as well. He is a veteran, who knows how to go rounds and challenge a developing fighter. I am going to fight a smart, but aggressive fight. I’ll look to exploit each flaw he has at the right time. We have a great game plan in place.”

On training with Michael Dutchover
“I am in the gym with Michael Dutchover every day and we have the same coach/manager in Danny Zamora. It is a great feeling that we’re on the same card and fighting the same day since we grind in the gym constantly. Now we’re working for the same goal on the same night. For our whole team, it’ll be a great night of fights.”

On fighting on 3.2.1. Boxing Pay-Per-View
“Thompson Boxing has a lot of fighters, so to be picked as one of the fighters to be featured on the pay-per-view card is a blessing. Ruben Torres vs. Oscar Bravo Set for Thompson Boxing 3.2.1. PPV Event

ORANGE, Calif. (July 10, 2020) – Undefeated super lightweight prospect, Ruben “Ace” Torres (12-0, 10 KOs), has an opponent for his scheduled July 26th 8-round co-main event bout, as a part of 3.2.1. Boxing presented by Thompson Boxing, an online pay-per-view in which fans will not be able to attend. Torres will square off against Oscar Bravo (25-9, 11 KOs) from Chile.

The PPV broadcast, airing live on the Thompson Boxing Promotions website (www.thompsonboxing.com), will start at 4:30 p.m. PT / 7:30 p.m. ET., and will take place at the Omega Products International Event Center in Corona, CA. 3.2.1 Boxing is priced at $6.50 (US Territories, Canada, EU, Asian countries), $3.50 (Latin America, Africa, Asian countries).

Torres, who is riding a three-fight knockout streak, picked up the biggest win of his career last year against a fellow unbeaten contender, George Acosta. Bravo has only been stopped once that was two years ago to hard-hitting Xavier Martinez. Torres is looking to make a statement by stopping one of the most durable fighters in the division.

“It is great to get back to action, it’s been far too long away from the ring,” said Ruben Torres. “I want to thank Thompson Boxing for getting me back in the ring as fast as possible, and also I am excited to face Oscar Bravo, who I know is going to challenge me.”

“Ruben is ready for this bout,” said manager and trainer Danny Zamora. “Ruben is a really good fighter, who works hard and is ready for whatever might happen that night. I expect big things from him.”

Bravo is more focused than ever. The 32-year-old Chilean boxer who is entering the bout on a three-fight win streak, has been stuck in the United States since March, as he was scheduled to fight but it got cancelled because of COVID-19. Bravo has never felt better in his career.

“I’m the best I have ever been as far as being in shape,” said Oscar Bravo. “I was forced to stay in the States because of the pandemic, but it’s a blessing in disguise as I’ve been training daily with coach Joel Diaz Sr. I had to learn on the job as a boxer and I am better now than any fight prior. I am working extremely hard and I am focused on beating Ruben Torres, which I know I can do as I’m focused like no other time in my career.”

Bravo sees fighting with no crowd as a major advantage for himself.

“I think the fact that no fans will be there helps me since Torres has a lot of fans,” Bravo said. “The fight will be the same for me, but for him, I know that a lot of people who usually support him now will be watching from home instead of ringside which is a change for him.”

Torres will be fighting on the same card as his stablemate Michael Dutchover.

“It is nice to fight with my stablemate on the same card,” said Torres. “My coach and I, as well as those I am in the gym with, are very close, so this will be a very great experience since it will be just us and our opponents there live. I am looking forward to it.”

3.2.1. Boxing is headlined by Midland, Texas lightweight Michael “West Texas Warrior” Dutchover (13-1, 10 KOs) taking on Jorge Maron Jr. (18-1, 6 KOs). Featherweight prospect Arnold Dinong (6-0, 1 KO) of Daly City, CA, vs. Brandon Cruz (6-1, 4 KOs) of San Diego, CA, will serve as the opening 6-round bout. The card will take place at the Omega Products International in Corona, California, in a fight in which the public will not be allowed to attend due to current COVID-19 health and wellness regulations.

Q and A Unbeaten Lightweight Ruben Torres

ORANGE, Calif. (Feb. 18, 2020) – Undefeated lightweight prospect, Ruben “Ace” Torres (11-0, 9 KOs), gives an inside look into his mindset as he will headline Thompson Boxing’s “Path To Glory” event this Friday, Feb. 21st, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

She was my number one fan and I miss her like crazy; I’m still trying to deal with her not being here and I can’t really put it into words, but I know she’s in a better place. I will always have her spirit with me when I step into the ring and I know she’s watching over me. I’m going to continue this journey to a world title with her in my mind, I want to make her proud.”

“I’m punching a lot harder at this weight,” said Santillan, a native of San Diego, Calif. “I felt my punches were a little too wide in that first round so I tried to tighten them up. I felt a lot more comfortable in the second and I was able to time Buelvas and anticipate which way he would be leaning. I saw the opening and I took it.”

Roberto Torres took out Eduardo Leonel Rodriguez in the 1st round of their scheduled eight-round junior welterweight fight.

Ruben Torres Faces Toughest Challenge of his Career on Friday Night

ORANGE, Calif. (July 24, 2019) – Rising lightweight Ruben Torres (9-0, 7 KOs) makes his headlining debut against veteran Ruben Tamayo (27-13-4, 18 KOs) this Friday, July 26, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Thompson Boxing caught up with Torres and got his take on facing the veteran Tamayo in his main event debut, how he handles life as a college student and full-time boxer and how he prepared for his first eight-round fight.

To access the promotional video for “New Blood,” please click here, or on the graphic above.

Your opponent, Ruben Tamayo, has been in with some big names. He fought for a world title against Jesus Cuellar. He went the distance against former world champion Jhonatan Romero, plus has seen a host of top prospects. On paper, he’s the toughest fighter you’ve faced so far. What are your thoughts on him?

“Tamayo is a seasoned veteran who still has a lot of fight left in him. I expect he’s going to give me a lot of different looks and different angles. I’ll be ready for any antics too. I’ll need to have my head on a swivel because he has a lot of experience to lean on.”

Friday’s “New Blood” main event will be the first for you as a headlining attraction. How are you approaching this next step in your career?

“It’s a different type of pressure because all eyes are on you to perform. That’s the main difference. My promoter expects big things from me and I expect to deliver. In terms of training and mental preparation, it’s just another day at the office. My dedication to the sport is always there no matter who I’m fighting.”

This is your first fight at eight rounds and it is against a southpaw. What, if anything, did you do differently in training camp?

“We stressed being patient. I can’t focus on one punch or thinking about a knockout. I sparred 10 rounds to make sure my cardio is at the level it needs to be. I got some great sparring with lefties like Isaac Zarate and Anthony Sanchez, who is fighting on this card. Isaac was super helpful because he throws punches from odd angles. I also sparred with Michael Dutchover, one of my stablemates. He’s always tough and ready for anything.”

You initially went to college at San Francisco State, but transferred after one year to Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area. How are you managing your full-time education with your boxing career?

“It’s actually not as difficult as it seems because I’m in school year round. For instance, I’m taking a statistics class right now in the summer. That allows me to take less of a course load in the Fall or Spring, which opens up more time to train. I think managing both at the same time has helped me stick to a schedule and has led to a more organized lifestyle.”

Tickets for “New Blood” are priced at $40, $60, & $100 and are available for purchase at ThompsonBoxing.com, or by calling 714-935-0900.

In the six-round co-feature, lightweight Anthony Sanchez (9-0-1, 9 KOs) of Long Beach, Calif. battles James Early (3-3) of Washington, DC.

All fights will be stream live on TB Presents: New Blood via our Facebook page, YouTube channel and ThompsonBoxing.com. Beto Duran will handle blow-by-blow duties, while Doug Fischer provides expert, color commentary.

The livestream starts at 8:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 p.m. ET.

Promising Lightweight Ruben Torres Makes Headlining Debut Friday, July 26

ORANGE, Calif. (July 19, 2019) – Rising lightweight Ruben Torres (9-0, 7 KOs) marks a milestone in his young career when he makes his headlining debut against veteran Ruben Tamayo (27-13-4, 18 KOs) one week from today on Friday, July 26, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

The unbeaten prospect, one of a handful of high ceiling talents signed by Thompson Boxing in recent years, is coming off his most impressive performance, a dominating points win against the previously undefeated George Acosta in May.

“The fights are starting to get tougher now,” said Torres, who turned professional two years ago. “Tamayo is a solid veteran that’s been in some tough fights with a lot of quality boxers. He’s going to want to test me early.”

Adding intrigue to the eight-round “New Blood” showcase fight is Tamayo’s southpaw stance and tall frame. Torres, 21, usually enjoys a considerable reach advantage as he stands nearly six feet tall, but Tamayo is nearly as rangy as the Los Angeles native.

“Every fight presents different challenges,” said Torres, who is managed and trained by Danny Zamora. “I know I’m young, but I’ve sparred with a lot of different types of fighters. I’ve sparred with Danny Roman [unified world champion] who has the best mix of intelligence and skill. I’ve sparred heavier guys and plenty of lefties too. I’m not concerned with what he might do because I know I’ll be able to control the fight on my terms.”

Torres, who began boxing at age nine, started his career with five straight knockout wins. Since then, he’s been able to refine his skills in an attempt to become a complete fighter.

“My focus has been trying to fight smarter,” said Torres, who played football and basketball in high school. “You can’t overwhelm every opponent with just talent. I need to be able to think my way out of trouble and adjust to things as they happen.”

In other action, junior middleweight Leo Ruiz (4-0, 2 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif. will face an opponent to be named later (four-rounds).

Top featherweight prospect Jose Tito Sanchez (3-0, 2 KOs) of Cathedral City, Calif. faces Luis Montellano (1-5-2, 1 KO) of Tijuana, Mexico in a fight set at four-rounds.

Opening “New Blood” is junior lightweight Chris Crowley (0-0-1), who will be looking for his first professional win against Braulio Avila (2-3) of Mexico City, Mexico (four-rounds).

All fights will be stream live on TB Presents: New Blood via our Facebook page, YouTube channel and ThompsonBoxing.com. Beto Duran will handle blow-by-blow duties, while Doug Fischer provides expert, color commentary.
