Steven Butler scored an explosive first round stoppage over Steve Rolls in a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout at Casino Montreal in Montreal, Canada.

Butler landed a huge right to the head froze Rolls defenseless on the ropes. Butler landed two more left hooks as the referee stopped the fight at 1:05.

Butler, 160 lbs of Montreal is 34-4-1 with 28 knockouts. Rolls, 159 lbs of Toronto is 22-4.

Iglesias Destroys Coceres in 1

Osleys Iglesias took out former world title challenger Marcelo Coceres in the opening round of their 10-round super middleweight bout.

Iglesias landed one shot to the temple that put Coceres down. Coceres tried to get to his feet, but could not and the fight was over at 2:06.

Iglesias, 168.9 lbs of Berlin, GER is 10-0 with nine knockouts. Coceres, 166.5 lbs of Buenos Aries, ARG is 32-7-1.

Lepage-Joanisse wins WBC Heavyweight Title

In a slugfest, Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse won the vacant WBC Heavyweight title with a 10-round split decision over Abril Vidal.

In round three, Lepage- Joanisse began to bleed from her nose. The two traded heavy shots throughout the entertaining scrap.

Lepage-Joanisse, 173.3 lbs of Saint Andre-Auccin, QUE won by scores of 97-93 twice while Vidall took a card 96-94.

LePage-Joanisse is now 7-1. Vidal, 170.7 lbs of Centenario, ARG is 10-2.

Arthur Biyarslanov stopped Cristian Palma in round three of their eight-round junior welterweight fight.

At the end of round two, Biyarslanov dropped Palma with a right hook to the body. In round three, it was another right hook to the body that put Palma down and the fight was stopped at 3:00.

Biyarslanov, 142 lbs of Toronto is 14-0 with 12 knockouts. Palma, 141 lbs of Lautato, CHL is 33-14-2

Luis Santana stopped Emiliano Garcia in round two of the eight-round lightweight battle.

In round one, Santana dropped Garcia with a left hook to the head. At the end of the round, Santana put Garcia down again, but was ruled a low blow after the bell. In round two, Santana dumped Garcia on the canvas with a powerful left for the 10-count at 1:31.

Santana, 136.9 lbs of Montreal is 11-0 with five knockouts. Garcia, 135.3 lbs of Buenos Aries, ARG is 19-10-1.

Mehmet Unal remained undefeated with an eight-round unanimous decision over Facundo Galovar in a light heavyweight contest.

Unal, 17.7 lbs of Montreal won by tallies of 80-72 twice and 79-73 and is now 9-0. Galovar, 176.9 lbs of Yabo Buena, ARG is 15-11-2.

Jhon Orobio stopped Cristian Gonzalez in round two of their six-round lightweight fight.

In round two, Orobio dropped Gonzalez with a jab to the body. Gonzalez was sent to the canvas for a second time with a right to the body and the fight was stopped at 2:51.

Orobio, 134.3 lbs of Montreal is 7-0 with seven knockouts. Gonzalez, 133.9 lbs of Buenos Aires, ARG is 12-20-1.

Wilkens Mathieu remained undefeated with a second round stoppage over Patrick Fiala in a super middleweight bout.

In round two, Mathieu dropped Fiala with a left hook. Mathieu finished off Fiala with a barrage of punches and the bout was stopped at 1:57.

Mathieu, 171.2 lbs of Quebec City, CAN us 8-0 with five knockouts. Fiala, 171.1 lbs of CZE is 8-5-2.

(March 5, 2024) — Two action-packed international cards will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. this week on ESPN+.

The action begins Thursday at Casino de Montreal in Montreal, Canada, as two-time middleweight world title challenger Steven Butler takes on Steve Rolls in the 10-round main event.

Butler-Rolls and undercard battles will stream live beginning at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

Butler (33-4-1, 27 KOs), a 10-year pro, challenged Ryota Murata for the WBA middleweight world title in December 2019. Despite a setback in his return fight against Jose de Jesus Macias in 2021, he rallied with a four-fight win streak, including a second-round TKO over Mark DeLuca. The 28-year-old suffered a stoppage loss in a bid for the WBO strap against Janibek Alimkhanuly last May. He is coming off a ninth-round TKO against Mexican veteran Ivan Alvarez in November. Rolls (22-3, 12 KOs) gave stiff tests to unbeaten talents Edgar Berlanga and Austin Williams after losing his ‘0’ against former division kingpin Gennadiy Golovkin in June 2019.

The fireworks continue on Friday as Panamanian light flyweight contender Azael Villar faces unbeaten Spaniard Jairo Noriega in the 12-round main event from Pharaoh’s Casino in Managua, Nicaragua. 

Villar-Noriega and undercard contests will stream live starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Villar (20-2-4, 15 KOs) captured his first regional title in October 2021 with a decision over David Martinez. He then tallied two stoppage victories before losing to Japanese standout Ayumu Hanada in January 2023. The 29-year-old fought to a split draw last August against Gerardo Zapata and returns following a 10-round points verdict against Ricardo Astuvilca in December. Noriega (13-0, 3 KOs) risks his undefeated record in his first fight outside of Spain following an eight-round decision win versus Gerson Larios last June.

Steven Butler stopped Ivan Alvarez in round nine of their 10-round middleweight bout.

In round nine, Butler landed a big right hand that hurt Alvarez. Butler followed up with a flurry that put Alvarez down in the corner. Later in the round Butler sent Alvarez down with a straight right hand. Alvarez got to his feet, but the fight was waved off at 2:36.

Butler, 161.9 lbs of Montreal, CAN is 33-4-1 with 27 knockouts. Alvarez, 160.9 lbs of Mexicali, MEX is 32-15-4.

Imam Khataev stopped Fernando Galvan in round two of their eight-round light heavyweight bout.

In round one, Khataev dropped Galvan with a one-two. In round two, it was a right hand that put Galvan down and the fight was stopped at 44 seconds.

Khataev, 178.6 lbs of Sydney, AUS is 5-0 with five knockout. Galvan, 179.4 lbs of Mexico is 8-9-1.

Mehmet Unal stopped Jaime Lopez after round two of their eight-round light heavyweight bout.

In round one, Unal dropped Lopez with a left hand. Unal dominated the bout and the fight was stopped in the corner due to injury.

Unal is now 7-0 with six knockouts. Lopez is 10-11.

Wikens Mathieu remained undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over Gregorz Mardyla in a super middleweight.

Mathieu, 169.5 lbs of Quebec, CAN won by scores of 60-54 on all cards and is now 5-0. Mardyla, 168.6 lbs of Krackow, POL is 1-1-1.

Moreno Fendero stopped Cristian Lozano in round two of their four-round middleweight bout.

Fendero dropped Lozano at the end of the first round. In round two, Lozano began to bleed from his nose. The fight was stopped when Fendero landed a hard combination at 1″05.

Fendero, 163.6 lbs of Chartres, FRA is 2-0 with one knockout, Lozano, 160.9 lbs of San Pedro, MEX is 2-3.

Janibek Alimkhanuly retained the WBO Middleweight title with a second round obliteration of Steven Butler at The Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.

In round two, Alimkhanuly dropped Butler with a devastating left uppercut that was followed by a huge left. When Butler got up, he was on unsteady legs. Alimkhanuly jumped on Butler and sent him to the canvas for second time with a big flurry of punches. Alimkhanuly continued to pound a wounded Butler and put him flat ion his back and the fight was stopped at 2:35.

Alimkhanuly, 159.2 lbs of Kazakhstan is now 14-0 with nine knockouts. Butler, 159.6 lbs of Montreal 32-4-1.

Alimkhanuly said, “Championsl. Boxing superstars! Where are you? I am waiting. Let’s fight. I am the most avoided boxer. I am the middleweight king. Let’s go. Let’s fight. I am ready for anybody. Anytime. Anywhere.”

Jason Moloney Decisions Astrolabio to Win Bantamweight Title

Jason Moloney won the vacant WBA Bantamweight title with a 12-round majority decision over Vincent Astrolabio

Moloney was cut around the left eye in round seven.

Moloney landed 143 of 463 punches. Atrolabio was 109 of 596.

Moloney, 117.8 lbs of Melbourne, AUS won by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 114-114 and is now 26-2. Astrolabio, 117.2 lbs of General Santos City, PHL is 18-4.

Moloney won the title on his third attempt.

Moloney said, “I thought I won it going away, but all that matters is the victory. And now I have this belt for the rest of my life.

“I broke my hand in the third or fourth round. It hurt every time I threw it. But I knew this was my last chance to make my dream come true.

“This is half the job done for Team Moloney. Next week, [twin brother] Andrew will join me as champion of the world.”

Gabriel Flores Jr. destroyed Derrick Murray by scoring an opening-round, one-punch stoppage in a eight-round lightweight bout.

Flores landed a perfect check left hook to the chin that sent Murray crushing down to the canvas with the back of his head hitting the canvas and the fight was stopped at 30 seconds.

Flores, 134.4 lbs of Stockton, CA is now 22-2 with eight knockouts. Murray, 134.4 lbs of Saint Louis, MO is 17-9-1.

Former world title challenger Ruben Villa IV stopped Maicol Lopez Viillagrano in round five of their eight-round featherweight bout.

In round four, Villa dropped Villagrano with a left uppercut that was followed by a straight left to the chin. In round five, Villa landed several big lefts that forced a referee stoppage at 1:55.

Janibek-Butler and Moloney-Astrolabio will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Janibek (13-0, 8 KOs), a 2016 Olympian from Zhilandy, Kazakhstan, rose the ranks in 2021 with knockout victories over former world champions Rob Brant and Hassan N’Dam. He picked up the WBO interim middleweight world title last May with a second-round blitzing of Danny Dignum and was elevated to world champion after Demetrius Andrade vacated his title. Janibek made the first defense of his title in November, turning back the stiff challenge of British champion Denzel Bentley. Butler (32-3-1, 26 KOs) has won four straight bouts, all in Canada, since back-to-back defeats.

Janibek, a native of Zhilandy, Kazakhstan, took the fast track to title contention after representing his country in the 2016 Olympics. Vargas (6-0, 2 KOs) is a 22-year-old prospect who made his pro debut in 2021 with a first-round knockout against Hector Montijo Molina in Mexico. In 2022, he made his U.S. debut by defeating Anel Mudo via four-round unanimous decision in May and ended the year with a points victory against Osmar Olmos Hernandez in November. (April 3, 2023) — Featherweight contender Ruben “Drac” Villa, the 25-year-old southpaw dynamo from Salinas, California, has inked a multi-fight promotional contract with Top Rank. Villa will make his long-awaited ring return in an eight-rounder Saturday, May 13, on the undercard of the Janibek Alimkhanuly-Steven Butler WBO middleweight title fight at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.
 
“Ruben Villa has everything it takes to become a world champion,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “He’s a young, talented southpaw who has already tested himself at the sport’s highest level. His future is very bright.”

Villa (19-1, 6 KOs) turned pro in 2016 and captured the WBO International featherweight strap in May 2019 with a unanimous decision over Luis Alberto Lopez, who is now the IBF featherweight world champion. Four months after toppling Lopez, he pitched a shutout over top Mexican contender Jose Enrique Vivas. Those victories helped earn him a shot at Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO featherweight world title in October 2020. Navarrete dropped Villa in the first and fourth rounds, but Villa outboxed Navarrete for long stretches. The two knockdowns were critical, as Navarrete notched a unanimous decision by scores of 114-112 2x and 115-111. Villa has fought once since the Navarrete loss, knocking out Horacio Garcia in the ninth round last April.

Janibek (13-0, 8 KOs), a native of Zhilandy, Kazakhstan, took the fast track to title contention after representing his country in the 2016 Olympics. He captured his first pair of regional titles in 2019 by defeating Cristian Olivas. In 2021, Janibek stopped former world champions Hassan N’Dam and Rob Brant. The following year, the 29-year-old blasted out Danny Dignum in two rounds to capture the interim WBO middleweight title, earning a shot at then-champion Demetrius Andrade. Janibek was elevated to world champion after Andrade elected to move up in weight rather than defend his title. The southpaw defended his title against Denzel Bentley via a 12-round decision last November.

“All of the middleweights have run scared, so I give Steven Butler a lot of credit for accepting the fight,” Janibek said. “I want to unify the division, but I cannot overlook Butler. He is a tough, powerful challenger, and I look forward to giving a tremendous show to the fans in Stockton and those watching on ESPN.”

Butler (32-3-1, 26 KOs) is a nine-year pro from Montreal, Canada. He captured the IBF North American belt via first-round knockout against Janks Trotter in 2016 before suffering his first defeat against then-undefeated Brandon Cook the following year. Butler bounced back with eight knockout victories before decisioning Vitalii Kopylenko to capture the WBC International middleweight title. The 27-year-old then traveled to Japan to challenge Ryota Murata for the WBA title in a valiant but unsuccessful effort. Butler is now coming off four wins, two of them by knockout.

Butler said, “No detail will be spared in this training camp. Expect a big upset on May 13. I am confident that I will bring the belt back to Quebec.”

Moloney (25-2, 19 KOs) began his career in the paid ranks as a junior featherweight before moving down to 118 pounds in 2017. As a bantamweight, he scored three knockout wins in a row before losing to Emmanuel Rodriguez via split decision in his first world title opportunity. He then stopped four opponents in a row before challenging pound-for-pound king Naoya Inoue for the unified bantamweight championship. Moloney is coming off four consecutive wins, including a third-round knockout over Filipino contender Aston Palicte.

“On May 13 I will become champion of the world. Nineteen years of hard work, countless sacrifices, and complete dedication to the sport all come down to this moment,” Moloney said. “Whatever it takes to have this world championship wrapped around my waist, nothing will stop me. Astrolabio (18-3, 13 KOs) is a 25-year-old native of the Philippines who burst onto the scene last year with a 10-round unanimous decision against former unified world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. Last November, he dropped Nikolai Potapov three times before stopping him in the sixth round to earn a crack at his first world title.

“Ever since I started boxing my dream was to fight for a world title, and dreams do come true with hard work,” Astrolabio said. “I have played this moment over and over in my head, and I will not be denied the world title. I want to thank my promoter, Manny Pacquiao, and Sean Gibbons for getting me this WBO bantamweight world title shot.”

• In an eight-round middleweight bout, former U.S. amateur star Javier Martinez (8-0, 2 KOs) makes his 2023 debut. Martinez dominated the durable Marco Delgado last November in a career-best performance.
   
• Atlanta-based welterweight standout Brian Norman Jr. (23-0, 19 KOs) comes back in an eight-rounder. Norman made his Top Rank debut in January with an eight-round decision over Rodrigo Damian Coria.
   
• Junior lightweight prospect Haven Brady Jr. (9-0, 4 KOs) makes his second appearance of 2023 in an eight-rounder. Brady turned back the gritty challenge of Ruben Cervera in January to improve to 9-0.

Arslanbek Makhmudov remained undefeated with a 10-round unanimous decision over Carlos Takam in a heavyweight bout at the Montreal Casino in Montreal, Canada.

In the opening seconds, Makhmudov came out firing and landing hard shots that made Takam take a knee.

In round seven, Makhmudov landed a wild right to the head that put Takam down again.

Makhmudov won by scores of 97-91 and 96-92 twice.

Steven Butler stopped former title challenger Mark DeLuca in round two of their 10-round middleweight bout.

In round two, Butler dropped DeLuca with a big right hand. DeLuca got to his feet, but was deemed unable to continue at 1:59.

Butler, 160 lbs of Montreal, CAN is 31-3-1 with 26 knockouts. DeLuca, 159 lbs of Quincy, MA is 28-4.

Thomas Chabot remained undefeated with a second round stoppage over Armando Ramirez in a scheduled six-round super featherweight bout.

In round one, Chabot dropped Ramirez with a left hand that made Ramirez take a knee. In round two, Chabot dropped Ramirez with a left/right to the body. Chabot finished off Ramirez with another body shot for another knockdown and the fight was stopped at

Chabot of Canada is 7-0 with seven knockouts. Ramirez of Jalisco, MEX is 3-2.

Jean Gardy Francois remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Andres Sanchez Ramirez in a super featherweight bout.

Francois, 129.2 lbs of Montreal won by scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37 and is now 3-0. Ramirez, 129 lbs of Durango, MX is 4-5-3.

Emma Gongora scored a mild upset by winning a six-round unanimous decision over Martine Vallieres Brisson in a featherweight bout,

In round two, Gongora landed a right hand that was ruled a knockdown. In round four, Brisson had a bloody nose.

In round six, Gongora was deducted a point for holding.

Scores were 58-54 and 57-54 twice for Gongora of France who is now 5-2. Brisson of Canada is 5-2.

Hamzah Khabazz won a four-round unanimous decision over Jose Gutierrez Bolanos in a welterweight bout.

Khabazz if Montreal won by 40-36 scores on all cards and is now 5-0. Bolanos, 146.8 lbs is 2-6

Murata (15-2, 12 KOs) vs. Butler (28-1-1, 24 KOs)

Murata regained the WBA middleweight world title in July from Rob Brant, the man who defeated him last October via unanimous decision in a shocking upset. Murata first won the belt in October 2017 with a knockout over Hassan N’Dam, then defended the belt the following April over Emanuele Blandamura. He stopped Brant in two rounds in their rematch, reversing the tide and setting himself up for potential superfights should he win. Butler, from Montreal, is 10-0 with nine knockouts since the lone defeat of his career. This will be only his second bout outside of Canada.

Mthalane (38-2, 25 KOs) vs. Yaegashi (28-6, 16 KOs)

Mthalane, South Africa’s only current world champion, is one of the most accomplished boxers in his nation’s history. A two-time IBF flyweight world champion who first held the title from 2009-2014, he regained the title last July with a decision over the then-unbeaten Muhammad Waseem on the Manny Pacquiao-Lucas Matthysse undercard in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He last fought May 13 in Tokyo, outlasting hometown favorite Masayuki Kuroda over 12 rounds. The 36-year-old Yaegashi, who has won world titles at minimumweight, light flyweight and flyweight, is a noted action star who defended the lineal flyweight crown three times and was the victor in the 2011 ESPN.com of the Year against Pornsawan Porpramook. He has won three in a row since losing his IBF light flyweight title via shocking first-round stoppage loss to Milan Melindo.

Teraji (16-0, 9 KOs) vs. Petalcorin (31-3-1, 23 KOs)

Teraji was a Japanese amateur standout who won the title he currently holds in just his 10^th pro fight. Apart from a majority decision over Pedro Guevara in his first title defense, he has been a dominant champion, notching four KOs in his last five defenses. Petalcorin has won two in a row since a spirited effort in a failed October 2018 title challenge against IBF light flyweight world champion Felix Alvarado, who was signed to fight Teraji in a title unification tilt before pulling out with a reported lung illness.

Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KOs)vs. Diocos (14-5-3, 4 KOs)

Gonzalez, one of the greatest lighter-weight fighters in boxing history, was atop many pound-for-pound rankings before losing a highly controversial decision to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in March 2017. He was knocked out in their rematch less than six months later, but he rebounded with a fifth-round knockout over Moises Fuentes in September 2018. He won his first world title at 105 pounds in 2008 and rolled through the competition in four weight classes with wins over the likes of Juan Francisco Estrada, Brian Viloria, Carlos Cuadras, Edgar Sosa and Yaegashi. Diocos, a Filipino veteran, has only been stopped once as a pro.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Middleweight champion Ryota Murata will defend his title against Steven Butler on December 23rd in Yokahama, Japan.

The card will include a junior flyweight word title unification fight between Ken Shiro (16-0, 9 KOs), 27, of Japan, and Felix Alvarado (35-2, 30 KOs), 30, of Nicaragua.

Montreal, February 22 2019 – This is a new and exciting chapter for boxers Yves Ulysse Junior (17-1, 9 KOs), Steven Butler (26-1-1, 23 KOs) and Erik Bazinyan(22-0, 17 KOs) as Eye of the Tiger Promotions joins forces with Golden Boy Promotions by signing an exclusive long-term promotional agreement.

This is a major step forward for the Quebec pugilists who will make their names known in America, being involved in major fights that will allow them to obtain significant American and international visibility. EOTTP President Camille Estephan, however, adamantly insisted that his protégés have the opportunity to fight in Quebec, at least once a year.

“It was extremely important for us to be able to come back and fight at home, in Quebec, out of respect for our fans, who have been supporting our athletes and encouraging them since the start of their careers. During his second visit to the United States on December 15, the charismatic Yves Ulysse Jr. faced Maximilliano Becerra (16-3-2, 8 KOs) at the Madison Square Garden in the undercard of the fight between Canelo Alvarez against Rocky Fielding. A convincing victory live on the DAZN network was added to the record of the Montrealer, who has so far accumulated significant performances against tough boxers in the super lightweight division, including the likes of Cletus Seldin, Zachary Ochoa and Ricky Sismundo.”All these sacrifices and efforts are paying off for my team and myself. Erik Bazinyan, one of the most promising super middleweights in the world, with an amateur record of 108-1 and undefeated in 22 professional fights with an impressive KO ratio, vies to be the cream of the crop of his division : “It’s a childhood dream that is coming true to go fight in the United States, and it motivates me a lot to work even harder to become world champion.
