SUNNY EDWARDS VS JULIO CESAR MARTINEZ FIGHT ‘AGREED’ LIVE ON AIR BY SCHAEFER AND HEARN

LONDON, MARCH 23 – Richard Schaefer and Eddie Hearn agreed live on national radio that the huge flyweight unification clash between Sunny Edwards and Julio Cesar Martinez must be made.

Edwards expertly defended his IBF title at Probellum Evolution in Dubai on Saturday night and immediately turned his attention to fighting Mexico’s WBC belt holder Martinez next.

Probellum President Schaefer was in the talkSPORT studio on Tuesday (March 22) talking to host Jim White when Matchroom chief Hearn joined them to discuss the chances of the unbeaten Edwards meeting Martinez. Both strongly agreed that should the WBC champion come through a mandatory title defence later this year then the fight with Edwards has to happen. Edwards, nicknamed ‘Showtime’, then joined them on the phone from his sun lounger on holiday in Dubai to reinforce that he is ready and waiting to take on Martinez. “Can you two get a deal on here?!” asked Jim White.  “I think everybody wants that fight,” said Eddie Hearn. “Edwards is a character and talk about rubbing people up the wrong way!  He’s a great guy, he’s very outspoken and he’s a very good fighter. He is, maybe, maybe the best in the division, but it’s between those two. “Martinez against Sunny Edwards is definitely a fight that we need to see.” “This is one of the most talked about fights, and I agree with your assessment of Sunny, I think he is an amazing self-promoter and he has the skills to back it up,” added Richard Schaefer.  “He’s a trash talker but he really he can fight – he’s got it all.” Hearn added: “There’s a great narrative in the fight and history, because don’t forget that Julio Cesar Martinez knocked out Sunny Edwards’ brother Charlie Edwards for the WBC world title.  But he actually hit him when he was on the floor after knocking him out and the fight was ruled a no contest.  “There will be a lot of trash talking and Sunny is a nightmare!  He’s been having pops at Eddy Reynoso, at Canelo, of which Julio Cesar Martinez is part of the team, so the build-up is everything you want in a fight, you want two guys to go at it.” Hearn went onto say: “Maybe you do one fight in London and one in California?”  “Sunny is a headliner, particularly here in the UK as well, so I’m sure we could build a nice show around it and have some Matchroom fighters against some Probellum fighters and have some fun with it!” said Schaefer. IBF champion Edwards then surprised Hearn, to join the call and said: “It’s the fight that makes the most sense.

“There are other good fights out there for both of us, in the division, but when you really think about it, there’s no other fight with the back story and with the pre-made build up.

“It’s a very interesting fight because it’s two completely conflicting styles and it’s splitting opinion pretty much down the middle because if you ask half the people, then I’m getting knocked out in a matter of minutes and the other half is telling everyone I’m going to school him.  “I think that’s just great for boxing and like Eddie said, it can happen anywhere.” For all of the latest on the unification bout between Edwards and Martinez, as well all ticket information and future announcements, sign up to the Probellum newsletter or follow Probellum on InstagramTwitter and Facebook.??

MARTINEZ: I WOULD LOVE THE SUNNY EDWARDS FIGHT

Julio Cesar Martinez says he would love to fight IBF champion Sunny Edwards – but admits that tomorrow night’s WBC World Flyweight title defense against McWilliams Arroyo is his toughest fight yet as they clash at the SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, live worldwide on DAZN.
TICKETS START AT $30 (PLUS FEES) AND ARE ON SALE NOW FROM TICKETMASTER.COM
Martinez (18-1 14 KOs) puts his belt on the line for the fourth time in a hotly anticipated bout with Arroyo that’s been postponed twice. The Mexico vs. Puerto Rico battle could steal the show on a night with four huge World title fight, with interim champion Arroyo (21-4 16 KOs) bullish in his belief that he will rip the belt from ‘El Rey’.

The 26 year old is confident that he’ll retain the belt though and predicts a war with the challenger, and is targeting his fellow belt holders next year as he looks to follow in his idol Canelo Alvarez’s footsteps and become undisputed before moving up.

A fight with Briton Edwards appeals the most to Martinez, with the Mexican having traveled to the UK to face his brother Charlie in August 2019, and the fight ending in a no-contest after Martinez landed a shot with Edwards on a knee having been floored by the all-action star. That’s a chapter that the champion would like to close, but he knows he has serious business to take care of first in the shape of Arroyo.

“I’m excited, I’m happy and I’m very motivated because as they say, there’s no date that doesn’t come and no commitment that doesn’t get completed, so I am very ready to face this challenge,” said Martinez.

“We’re getting to know new territories and we’re excited to be able to come to new cities and meet new fans, and I hope that they are happy with my performance.

“I am in a great place physically and mentally, we’ve taken care of every single aspect in the preparation to come in 1000 per cent ready, I am really anxious to get back in the ring. I know he is coming here to win, to take my belt, and we are prepared for that. I can win on points or by KO, it’s the win that’s the most important thing.

“The fight has fallen through twice and we know that, so it’s a fight that has been highly anticipated. We want to win this fight well and then look to face the other champions and unify the division, to show who is the king.

“We can brawl, or we can move around and box, so we will see who has the most sensitive chin on the night. He said that he’s going to bring everything he’s got, and I hope he does, because that will mean the fight will not go the distance – we come with everything but fear.

“We want all the belts, so Sunny Edwards, Artem Dalakian and Junto Nakatani – that’s the goal.  But if it can’t happen in the next year, we would have to move up to Super-Flyweight where we can have fights with Juan Francisco Estrada, Chocolatito and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

“It would be an honor to fight Sunny, a great opportunity and to put behind what happened in the fight with his brother Charlie. He has a belt, and we want to unify, so gladly we’d go to England for the fight.”

Martinez’s clash with Arroyo is part of a huge quadruple header of World title action in New Hampshire, led by Demetrius Andrade (30-0 18 KOs) defending his WBO Middleweight title against Ireland’s Jason Quigley (19-1 14 KOs).

Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0 7 KOs) defending his WBA and IBF World Super-Bantamweight titles against José Velásquez (26-9-2 19 KOs) and the second step on the path to crowning an undisputed women’s champion at 140lbs sees Kali Reis (18-7-1 5 KOs) takes on Jessica Camara (8-2) for the WBA, IBO and vacant WBO straps.

PROBELLUM: REVOLUTION – PROBELLUM TO STAGE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLE-HEADER IN ITS INAUGURAL EVENT

Los Angeles, CA – November 9, 2021 – Probellum will host a historic world championship double-header at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on Saturday, December 11 with Probellum: Revolution – as Sunny Edwards defends his IBF flyweight title against Jayson Mama and John Riel Casimero puts his WBO bantamweight title on the line against the UK’s Paul Butler.

The event brings together some of the very best fighters from around the world in what is sure to be an action-packed night of boxing.

Undefeated Edwards (16-0, 4 knockouts) makes the first defense of his world title, taking on his mandatory challenger Mama (16-0, 9 knockouts), after the two men were originally set to meet in September in the UK before an injury postponed the clash.

Casimero (31-4, 21 knockouts) is back following his victory over Guillermo Rigondeaux in August, now squaring off with mandatory challenger Butler (33-2, 15 knockouts). Casimero is one of the most devastating punchers in the division who looks to keep his momentum going in his third world championship defense.

Four-weight world champion Donnie Nietes (43-1-5, 23 knockouts) will also appear on the card, as he looks to move a step closer to another championship in a world title elimination bout. He will be joined by unbeaten super-featherweight Archie Sharp (21-0, 9 knockouts), and former world title challenger Jono Carroll (20-2-1, 5 knockouts), who is coming off an important win against Andy Vences in September.

“We are delighted to finally announce plans for this incredible event in Dubai next month,” said Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum. “We made it clear from the offset that we have massive plans in store for Probellum, and this world title double-header shows just that.

“The two world title fights see John Riel Casimero face Paul Butler, while Sunny Edwards takes on Jayson Mama, and both of those bouts are set to be guaranteed excitement. With the likes of Donnie Nietes, Archie Sharp and Jono Carroll all competing too, fans will be treated to a night of non-stop action. We cannot wait for fight night and are proud to bring this historic event to the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.”

Tickets are now available online via Coca-Cola Arena, Platinumlist, and in stores at Virgin Megastores.

EDWARDS WARNED NOT TO RUN FROM MAMA

JAYSON MAMA has accused rival Sunny Edwards of running from an old man in his title winning performance.

The unbeaten Filipino challenges for the Croydon man’s IBF World Flyweight championship at London’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday September 11, live on BT Sport.

Mandatory challenger Mama (16-0, 9 KOs) stepped aside so Edwards  (16-0, 4 KOs) could challenge Moruti Mthalane for the title in April.

Edwards delivered one of the best performances so far this year thrashing the South African on points.

Mthalane had been unbeaten for more than 12 years, but Mama scoffed: “Mthalane was old.

“Edwards was running all night. I hope he doesn’t run when he fights me but I think he will run from me.”

Mama, 24, hails from General Santos City home all-time great Manny Pacquiao and believes he can take over from Pacquiao who is considering retirement as the Philippines next big boxing star.

He has prepared at the Sanman gym close to his home under trainer Ronerex Dalut and strength and conditioning coach Ronerex Dalut.

Despite being critical of Edwards tactics against Mthalane, Mama admits: “Edwards is a great boxer but I have trained really hard to bring back the belt to the Philippines.

“I will be a World champion on September 11.”

Mama warmed up for his big fight against Edwards with a eight round retirement win against Romshane Sarguilla in April – the challenger’s third inside the distance win in his last four fights.

Also on the bill World title chasing Light-Heavyweight Callum Johnson (19-1, 14 KOs) defends his WBO Global belt against Serbia’s Marko Nikolic (27-1, 12 KOs).

Battersea Middleweight Denzel Bentley (14-1-1, 12 KOs) meets Wolverhampton’s Andrew Robinson (24-5-1, 7 KOs).

Exciting Batten’s Boxing Gym stablemates Mark Chamberlain (8-0, 5 KOs) and Ryan Garner (10-0, 6 KOs) both box eight rounders.

Bromley Cruiserweight Ellis Zorro (9-0, 6 KOs) boxes a six rounder in his first fight of 2021. Islington Super-Featherweight Masood Abdullah (1-0, 1 KO) steps up to six rounds.

Super-Featherweight Charles Frankham (3-0, 1 KO), Super-Bantamweight Umar Khan (1-0), and Stratford Welterweight Khalid Ali debutant are in four round action.

Tickets available from £55 via SEETICKETS

CALLUM JOHNSON BACK – SEPTEMBER 11th UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT STAR Callum Johnson makes his return to the ring on the undercard of Sunny Edwards’ first defence of his IBF world flyweight title at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday September 11, live on BT Sport.

Edwards goes in against mandatory challenger and also 16-0 Jayson Mama from the Philippines following his epic seizing of the title from former long-standing champion Moruti Mthalane back in April.

Johnson, 19-1 (14 KOs), made an emphatic return to the Queensberry ranks in April with an explosive destruction of Croatian tough man Emil Markic in the second round. Now the 35-year-old former world title challenger will look to remain on course for a second shot with a convincing performance against the Serbian Marko Nikolic, 27-1 (12 KOs).

Nikolic has previously held the WBC Mediterranean light heavyweight title and, in his last fight, suffered his only defeat in a challenge for the WBC International Silver title.

Also on the card, popular middleweight Denzel Bentley (14-1, 12 KOs) gets back into the fighting fold with a domestic dust-up against experienced campaigner Andrew Robinson (24-5-1, 7 KOs).

Bentley suffered his only reverse last time out when defending his British title against Felix Cash and will be seeking to quickly restore himself into title contention.

Some of the finest young talents in British boxing take their place on the Copper Box card with ferocious lightweight Mark Chamberlain (8-0, 5 KOs) back in action and looking to prove himself as the No.1 young lightweight on the Queensberry books.

In March, Chamberlain, 22, demolished the usually resolute Jordan Ellison inside 90 seconds with a sickening body shot and will now be aiming to continue his trail of destruction.

His stablemate in  Southampton, Ryan Garner (10-0, 6 KOs), is also no stranger to concussive finishes and ‘The Piranha’ will be taking the next step before closing in on the super featherweight title challenges his huge ability warrants.

Multi-titled former amateur star Charles Frankham (3-0, 1 KO) will have his second fight as a Queensberry fighter after a successful introduction at the SSE Arena, Wembley in July at lightweight, with former senior ABA champion Masood Abdulah (1-0) also in action at super featherweight.

Super bantamweight Umar Khan (1-0), Super Featherweight Masood Abdulah (1-0, 1 KO), Cruiserweight Ellis Zorro (9-0, 4 KO’s) and the debut-making welterweight Khalid Ali complete the card.

IT’S SHOWTIME: SUNNY SET FOR FIRST TITLE DEFENCE

THE IBF WORLD flyweight champion Sunny Edwards will make a first defence of his title against the unbeaten Filipino Jayson Mama at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday September 11.

For ‘Showtime’ Sunny, 16-0, this mandatory challenge for his belt comes just over four months after his exquisite skills proved simply too much for the former long standing and decorated champion Muruti Mthalane at York Hall, where he became his promoter Frank Warren’s 149th world champion a matter of months after the Hall of Famer celebrated 40 years in the professional sport.

This time around, the 25-year-old Edwards will have the additional boost of crowd support inside the Copper Box on a show that falls squarely near the beginning of the traditional boxing ‘season’.

It should make for a spectacular start to the new campaign, with Edwards up against a 16-0 challenger, whose KO-record justifies his stage name of ‘Smasher’. The 24-year-old has stopped nine of his 16 opponents and hails from a nation with a rich pedigree in the lighter weight classes.

Promoter Frank Warren commented: “This is a bit of a step into the unknown against an unbeaten fighter who will be as confident of victory as Sunny was against Mthalane. Jayson Mama was good enough to step aside to allow Sunny his shot at the South African great and now it is his turn to attempt to upset the odds.

“To my mind though, Sunny is the best flyweight on the planet and this is just the beginning of a glorious reign as champion. He wants to unify and win the Ring Magazine belt and we will look to do that, but he has this mandatory obligation to navigate through first and he cannot take anything for granted.

“After winning his title in an eerie atmosphere, it would be fitting if the public really come out in their numbers to support Sunny on his journey as world champion and I hope the Copper Box is full to the rafters in recognition of his achievements.”

Ticket information to follow next week.

LYNDON INSPIRED TO WIN WORLD TITLE BY BOXING ‘TWIN’ SUNNY

LYNDON ARTHUR SAYS the world title winning exploits of his boxing ‘twin’ Sunny Edwards has proved an inspiration and an achievement he is eager to emulate.

Sunny, of course, seized the IBF flyweight world title in a sensational fashion with a fleet-footed masterclass against the South African legend Moruti Mthalane in April. His nimble footwork and rapier-like array of shots saw to it that a glittering red belt was soon being couriered to his doorstep in Sheffield.

The 25-year-old world champion ventured across to Manchester this week to the famous Collyhurst and Moston gym, where the uncompromising headmaster is former European champion, the Black Flash, Pat Barrett.

One of Barrett’s star pupils is one of Britain’s and the world’s leading light heavyweights, who is known in boxing circles as King Arthur. Lyndon catapulted himself to the forefront of the division with a display of precise punch picking in his December showdown against big domestic rival Anthony Yarde in London.

The 30-year-old WBO Intercontinental and Commonwealth champion returns to the capital next Saturday (July 30) when he headlines the show at the Royal Albert Hall, taking on the unbeaten, 15-0, Italian Davide Faraci, live on BT Sport.

Inseparable amateur teammates Lyndon and Sunny were back in tandem as the light heavy was put through his paces by Barrett on Wednesday and the older of the pair reflected that he cannot fail to be inspired by his flyweight friend.

“Sunny, man, it was great, wasn’t it,” considered the 18-0 man. “It was just a great thing, I am a bit lost for words, it was just mad and amazing. I’ve watched him coming from ABA finals – and he got beaten in one of them – to the pinnacle of professional boxing.”

The typically reserved – publicly, at least – Lyndon doesn’t give much away at the best of times, but he was visibly ecstatic following Sunny’s triumph. Much more so than after his own successes.

“It is not just me,” he explained. “I know with a lot of boxers, you tend to get more excited about your friends or family fighting than you do about yourself. My reaction showed my feelings.

“It was crazy in the sense that we met on GB (elite amateur squad) and we just clicked straight away and have kept as friends and now we are both here.”

The obvious question remained. How did the quietly eloquent and imposing light heavyweight end up in cahoots with the impish – and some might say outspoken – flyweight?

“Have you seen the film Twins? It is the same sort of thing and we naturally bounce off each other and have done since we met. It just happened organically, it was not forced and we have stayed friends and had a strong relationship ever since.”

Away from his Sunny outlook, Lyndon has a job on his hands against Faraci next week and he is not underestimating the task.

“I have watched a few of his fights and he is a threat. I am the key to his world title shot and his lottery ticket, so to speak. He will take this fight more seriously than any other so I have to be ready.”

Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight champion Lyndon Arthur (18-0, 12 KOs) headlines the July 10th Royal Albert Hall bill and makes the first defence of his WBO Inter-Continental title against Italian Davide Faraci (15-0, 7 KOs).

The Mancunian’s bitter rival Anthony Yarde (20-2, 19 KOs) returns in a non-title ten rounder.

Also on the bill WBO ranked number one Super-Middleweight Zach Parker (20-0, 14 KOs) will defend his WBO International belt against Uzbek Sherzod Khusanov (22-2-1, 10 KOs).

WBO ranked number four Super-Featherweight, Archie Sharp (19-0, 9 KOs) meets Mexico’s Diego Andrade Chavez (13-4-2, 1 KOs) with the vacant WBO Global championship on the line.

Prodigious bantamweight talent Dennis McCann (9-0, 5 KOs) faces Tanzanian John Chuwa (20-4, 10 KOs).

Elsewhere on the card, 2016 Olympian Muhammad Ali (2-0) will have his third professional assignment against Lee Glover (11-4, 3 KOs), with Lightweight KO-artist Sam Noakes (5-0, 5 KOs) and Light-Heavyweight former Olympic Youth champion Karol Itauma (2-0, 1 KO) also featuring.

RYAN GARNER: “I AM A MAN ON A MISSION”

RYAN GARNER HAS personally assured Frank Warren that he is back firing on all cylinders and ready to reboot his career at York Hall on Friday on the undercard of Sunny Edwards’ world title tilt.

The ‘Piranha’, still just 23, was widely considered as one of boxing’s finest prospects when he burst onto the professional scene back in June 2016 at the same Bethnal Green venue and soon his sparring services were called upon by champions of the calibre of Carl Frampton and Josh Warrington, who viewed young Garner as a world champion in waiting.

Several well-documented mishaps – mostly weight-related – subsequently stalled his fledgling career and Garner missed a number of opportunities to progress and significantly increase his 9-0 ledger.

Happily, as the Southampton man acknowledges himself, the penny has finally dropped with growing maturity and he is ready to fully dedicate to the sport he excels in. And he put in a call to his promoter to confirm his commitment.

He will be bidding to get back on track on a card headlined by Edwards seeking to seize the IBF world flyweight title held by the formidable South African Moruti Mthalane.

“I can’t wait,” buzzed the Wayne Batten-trained protege. “I am feeling really, really good and, I know a lot of fighters say this all the time, but this really is the best I have ever felt. I have taken everything seriously – my diet, weight, sparring – and it has just been perfect, really.

“Hopefully I get this one done and then get straight back out and stay busy from here on in.

“I used to come into camp much heavier, but coming into this one I was bang on because of what I have been doing outside of the gym. I couldn’t really have asked for a better camp.

“I have hit a reset button and I think I have finally grown up – I am 23 so it is about time!

“I have got commitments in life now, my own aims and goals, so it was time and now the proof will be in the pudding.”

Boxing is what Garner does best, with him having been a decorated amateur and a hugely exciting young professional. It would have been a crying shame to have lost his talents to the building sites of Southampton.

“I have been boxing since I was 10 years old, so for me to have put all that hard work in and winning what I did as an amateur would have been a terrible waste. So I am glad I have turned over a new leaf and hopefully I have a promising future still in front of me.

“I am still working on the building site, although I have had the last three weeks off, but I will be back in on Tuesday after the fight because I want to get as much money as I can to save up for a house and work until I get another fight date.

“It will help me because you have got to go to bed early and have got to do everything right.

“This will be my 10th fight and hopefully I will get into the 20s pretty quickly because I want to stay busy now. I spoke to Frank and we had a catch-up where I was able to thank him for getting me out again.

“I will stay on the straight and narrow and, as long as I do my part, he will do his. So it is all good and he knows I am doing things right. If I produce I know he will because he has done it for me before.

“I am a new man, honestly. I am a man on a mission now.”

In the main event of the behind closed doors London card brilliant South African Moruti Mthalane (39-2, 26 KOs) defends his IBF World Flyweight championship against Croydon’s Sunny Edwards (15-0, 4 KOs).

In a ten rounder, Belfast’s Michael Conlan (14-0, 8 KOs) faces dangerous Romanian Ionut Balata (14-2, 3 KOs).

Darlington’s Troy Williamson (15-0-1, 11 KOs) faces Scot Kieran Smith (16-0, 7 KOs) in a final eliminator for the British Super-Welterweight title, held by Ted Cheeseman.

Southampton Super-Featherweight Ryan Garner (9-0, 6 KOs) and Reading Super-Welterweight Joshua Frankham (2-0) are also in action. Joshua’s cousin, Levi Frankham is the second debutant on the bill besides Kumuteo.

SUNNY EDWARDS, CONLAN/BALUTA PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

SUNNY EDWARDS BIDS for world title glory on Friday night at York Hall when he takes on the formidable IBF flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane, live on BT Sport 1 from 7pm.

The challenger faced the media today, along with Michael Conlan and Ionut Baluta who make up the bantamweight chief support.

PHOTOS from todays press conference can be found here

Below is a selection of quotes from the preview event.

Sunny Edwards, 15-0-0 (4)

I don’t think anyone has ever come to a press conference and said they have been really struggling or a camp has been hard. Every camp is hard, but it went as well as it could have gone. I want to thank Frank, MTK and BT. I have had a lot of notice for this fight and people inside the offices know I have taken short-notice fights, hard title fights at four and a half weeks notice and less than that.

For this one I have had 13 weeks where I have known the opponent, the scale of the fight and the event for a very, very long time. I have had the time to prepare meticulously, my trainer Grant has done a great job, as always, and the team is very strong. I am just looking forward to welcoming myself to the world scene on Friday night.

I need to look like myself on the poster! They must have great photoshop skills or must have foreseen the future with me being in great shape. I have always known what to do and how to get there, but with using my talent I have allowed myself to cut corners when I shouldn’t have. I’ve always trained hard and I am very fit, I am always in the gym and love training. I don’t do anything else, if i don’t go to the gym I am pretty much sitting around the house all day. Apart from my sons, there is not much more to me than boxing, if I am honest.

It has been easy to make the adjustments and my strength and conditioning coach has been cooking for me the last 13 weeks. Together with my food sponsor, the food has been put on a plate for me and I haven’t had to think about what times I am eating. It has been a good run-up, I have dedicated and committed myself to it and I am hoping those efforts will show on Friday.

Having kids has really made me appreciate what I had growing up, the opportunities I had. One thing I can say about my dad is there was never a lack of effort that went into me or my brother. He was 100 per cent full tilt from early on and we used to run something like 36 miles a week, much more than I do now!

You’ve got to enjoy the journey. Too many people focus on the destination to make them happy, but if you enjoy the day to day, whether it is camp or dieting, these are the best times of my life and a lot of boxers forget that. I am enjoying every second of it, enjoying walking in and seeing big posters of myself next to a good friend in Michael Conlan, who was a hero of mine.

It is good to be recognised as part of the top tier by just challenging for a world title and I will make my claim on Friday to join the handful of British world champions and one of the two Frank Warren promoted ones next to big Tyson. I will be where I feel I have deserved to be for a long, long time.

I don’t really know my optimum weight because I have never before applied myself like I have this time. I am eating four meals a day, two steaks yesterday and a steak and two eggs already today, with two more meals to come. I have never been like this on fight week and normally I look at food and see weight. I’ve done it properly and jumped off the scales at 51.8 yesterday, which is under the super fly limit and normally with the cut I do you would see me very drawn and my eyes a bit poppy. I look different this time and probably could drop down to light flyweight. If I lose I will just blame the weight and move down!

One realism when I first called for this fight was that he was the only MTK-signed champ. I have seen him spar up close and logged enough upstairs to think when the time comes I would be able to take him. That is no slight on him because he is a great, great world champion. I don’t need to sell him anymore than the media team has been selling him, other than to let everyone know he is a proper world champion.

I just wanted the best and he has been ranked No.1 by Ring Magazine for a little bit now. That is what I want, although I am not quite sure how the Ring rankings work, but surely if you beat the man you become the man. I am trying to be the best at the weight and, from being No.1, I can then start looking down and pick off the other champions.

I want to be at the top of the tree and recognised as such. I want to test myself and be known as one of those fighters who takes the best/hardest fights, the biggest fights that my name and platform will allow me to have.

I’ve got a ‘no quit regardless’ mentality and I think I will learn more from the 12 rounds on Friday night than I have in a large proportion of the rest of my career, which is why I am looking forward to it.

MICHAEL CONLAN 14-0-0 (8)

It has been an up and down 12 months. The things that have happened are part of life and everything happens for a reason. Before my injury my performance last August (Sofiane Takoucht) was my best as a professional and I believe I am now continuing on from that. I have had injuries, we have had a pandemic, but it is what it is. I was devastated when I did my ankle, but it happened for a reason and now I am back, fully recovered and looking forward to Baluta on Friday. I was already planning to move down to Super-Bantamweight before my injury in December. The pandemic showed me how easy it was to drop down. I am making 122lb very comfortably. I actually make 122lb easier than I was 126lb and that’s nice. I am looking forward to going in and putting a performance on. This is the weight where you will see the best performances from me and that is what I am looking forward to. This fight cements my mandatory position with the WBO and hopefully I will fight for the belt this year. I am very confident of that happening. First, I have to get rid of Ionut and I believe I will do it in good fashion. I don’t need to ask anything about his win against David Oliver Joyce. I look at him and I see what I have to see.  Ionut has pulled off two very wins recently and he is a very good fighter. He is a very dangerous fighter. He has beaten two Irish guys (TJ Doheny and David Oliver Joyce) in a row and his confidence is sky high. I believe that I will put on a performance and shut that completely down.

IONUT BALATA 14-2-0 (3)

This is a great opportunity to fight Michael and I am hopeful that he will be the third Irish fighter I beat. I will be doing the best I can. I respect Michael as a fighter. He is a very good fighter, but we are about to find out who is the best between us. I am very focused on winning this and wont think about the future. This fight is very important as regards getting a World title fight in the future.

‘UNDERDOG’ EDWARDS OUT TO UPSET ODDS, BECOME WORLD CHAMPION

SUNNY EDWARDS HAS vowed to make sure 2021 is another big year for the underdogs by following in the 2020 footsteps of Teofimo Lopez, Dillian Whyte and Jeison Rosario by shocking the boxing world when he takes on IBF Flyweight World Champion Moruti Mthalane.

Last year saw the bookies – along with a good few pundits – rocked by a series of high profile fistic upsets, and 2021 has started in a similar fashion with Mauricio Lara and Lennox Clarke recording stunning victories over higher ranked opponents.

Upsetting the odds is what Edwards will need to do if he wants to take possession of the IBF belt held by the battle-hardened champion on April 30, live on BT Sport.

This particular betting underdog is a dedicated lover of our canine friends and will need to summon up the bulldog spirit of his beloved hounds against the 39-2 ruler of the division, with 26 KOs to his name.

Edwards is the proud owner of two American Bullys – Duchess and Kilo – who he insists are not quite as fierce as they look. He knows it is up to him to prove once more that underdogs can snap and bite with the best of the pedigree champions.

“I am pretty happy to be considered the underdog,” confirmed the 25-year-old. “They have been on a great run recently and especially since boxing went behind closed doors.

“It is a trend I am confident of continuing and when I get the belt it will be in safe keeping with Kilo and Duchess protecting the crown jewels! I might have to ask the IBF about sanctioning some world champion dog collars if it all goes my way.

“And I know my dogs look quite mean, but they are big teddy bears!”

Edwards goes into battle admitting that he might be minus the supposed menaces of his four-legged family and will need to assess what he is up against in the opening couple of rounds.

“I think I will have to move around and have a look for the whole 12 rounds, to be honest. You don’t go head on against an immovable object, I’ve got to try and work around it for as long as I can.

“This is definitely a 12-round fight and I have trained for 15. All I know is, I wouldn’t try and beat him in an arm wrestle, so I am not going to try and beat him in a fight!”

Edwards is both familiar and friendly with the 38-year-old, known as ‘Babyface’, since spending time together over in Ukraine at a training camp.

“It is a friendly one since we were together in Ukraine and we have got each other on social media, so it has always been a ‘good luck’ or ‘well done’ before and after fights. He is top of the division, top of the tree and he is where everybody else wants to be.

“He is heavily avoided, we know that. I think he’s had like 10 world title fights and nobody has ever given him a unification shot. He has proved time and time again he will be the away fighter, even as a world champion.

“I think you have to understand the beast I am getting in the ring with, to be honest. I do.

“When I got out of the ring in Ukraine he said I would 100 per cent be a world champion, when I asked him for a picture. Hopefully that 100 per cent will be on April 30 and against him, but he is such a nice man and a great champion.

“I do genuinely feel honoured to be sharing a ring with him, but all the friendliness will fall by the wayside when that first bell goes. I just need to win and having that world title would mean the absolute world to me and it would put me up there with the top British fighters right now.”

MTHALANE v EDWARDS: UNDERCARD TAKES SHAPE, RYAN GARNER RETURNS + MORE

FEROCIOUS PUNCHING SUPER featherweight Ryan ‘The Piranha’ Garner will make his long-awaited return to the ring, with the Southampton starlet having been added to the undercard of the IBF world flyweight title encounter between Sunny Edwards and the decorated champion Moruti Mthalane on Friday April 30, live on BT Sport.

In chief support to Sunny’s shot at the star from South Africa, Belfast favourite Michael Conlan enters into his opening assignment at super bantamweight against the in-form Ionut Baluta from Madrid, plus Troy Williamson and Kieran Smith will do battle at super welterweight in a final eliminator for a British title challenge.

Garner, 23, has long been touted as one of Britain’s brightest prospects and he last saw action in February of last year in the final Queensberry show before lockdown restrictions took hold. Several setbacks over the last couple of years resulted in his promising career threatening to not reach its potential, but the 9-0 Garner is determined to push on and move from strength to strength.

“I cannot wait to get back in there after more than a year and I am in the best shape – both physically and mentally – that I have ever been in,” said the Wayne Batten-trained puncher, who takes on Birmingham’s Paul Holt over six rounds. “It is up to me to make it count and put on a show.

“This is a sort of relaunch for my career and I will give it my absolute best shot. There is no turning back for me and once I get this fight and maybe one more under my belt, I want to jump into big fights that will really show everyone what I am all about.

“I intend to remind people who watch boxing why I was considered one of the best young talents a couple of years ago. My apprenticeship is coming to an end and I want to be in the title mix by the end of the year.

“This is an amazing show to be on, headlined by a big world title fight, which is where I want to be before too long.”

Reading’s Joshua Frankham goes into his third fight at super welterweight, having made his debut in September of last year and moved to 2-0 in November.

“I am so happy and grateful to be out for a third time since restrictions came in last year,” said the 22-year-old. “I know I am lucky and I am being well looked after by Frank Warren, so it is up to me to repay the faith that has been shown in me and put on a big performance.

“I was pleased with my first two fights, but there is so much more to come from me and I want to showcase the improvements I am making on a daily basis working hard with Wayne (Batten) in the gym.

“It is quite something that three of us from our gym are getting on this show and it is a tribute to the hard work Wayne puts in with us young fighters.”

The third of the Southampton-based Batten’s trio on the card is the debut-making super welterweight Levi Frankham from Cranleigh, who is cousin to Joshua and new Queensberry recruit Charles Frankham.

“This is the most fantastic stage to begin my professional career,” said the 20-year-old former winner of two Junior ABA titles, a Three-Nations, an NABC title and National amateur champion. “I have had to wait for quite a while and be fairly patient, but it will be well worth the wait to get out under the lights on such a massive show.

“The only thing that could make it better would be if my family and friends could be there to see me and fans were allowed in, but that will be something else to look forward to.

“I have worked so hard preparing for this moment and I am determined to make the most of it and make a big impression on my promoter and those watching on TV.”

Completing the card is the debut of Muswell Hill super welterweight Jonathan Kumuteo, who will be trained by Ross Pearce has targeted five fights in his first 12 months as a professional

“I’m not too excited at the moment because I have been waiting for 12 months to make my debut as the pandemic caused a big delay,” said the former London ABA Champion.

“It is what it is, but once I go into the bubble, have my COVID test and jump on the scales to weigh-in I will know it is real.”

In 2016, Kumuteo was diagnosed with a rare skin condition that needed several operations and wearing dressings for two years.

He added: “I’ve been through a lot of at times, but it made me believe and prepared for this.”

April 30: Michael Conlan-Ionut Baluta Junior Featherweight Clash & Moruti Mthalane-Sunny Edwards Flyweight Title Bout Set for London Bill LIVE on ESPN+

LONDON (March 26, 2021) — The London spotlight will shine on Belfast’s Michael “Mick” Conlan and South African great Moruti Mthalane from Copper Box Arena on Friday, April 30.

Mthalane, who is undefeated since 2008, will defend his IBF flyweight world title in the main event against London native Sunny Edwards. In the co-feature, longtime featherweight contender Conlan will make his junior featherweight debut in a 12-rounder against noted spoiler Ionut Baluta.

Promoted by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, Mthalane-Edwards and Conlan-Baluta will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+ at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. Undercard bouts are scheduled to begin live on ESPN+ starting at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT.

“This is a big step up for Mick, as Baluta has pulled off quite a few upsets and is motivated to do so once again,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Mick is close to a world title shot, and I expect him to be at his very best April 30. I am also pleased that American fight fans will have an opportunity to watch the sensational Mthalane, who is in tough against the young Edwards.”

Conlan (14-0, 8 KOs) is back after a disappointing 2020 that started with the COVID-related cancellation of his annual St. Patrick’s Day bout in New York and ended with an ankle injury suffered while training in November. He knocked out former world title challenger Sofiane Takoucht last August and now sets his focus on the junior featherweight division. He is ranked No. 1 by the WBO and No. 8 by the WBA, and he could be in line for a world title shot with a victory over Baluta (14-2, 3 KOs), a Romanian who is used to overcoming long odds. Last March, Baluta stunned former junior featherweight world champion TJ Doheny via eight-round unanimous decision, and six months later, he knocked out Conlan’s 2016 Irish Olympic teammate Davey Oliver Joyce in the third round.

Conlan said, “I’m very excited to get back in the ring against Ionut Baluta on April 30. I know how tough of a fighter Baluta is, but I’ve been training hard since shortly after my last win in August and will be well prepared for victory. I’m looking forward to putting on a great show and can’t wait to get back in the ring.”

Mthalane, 38, won his first world title in November 2009 with a unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Miranda for the vacant IBF crown. He cemented his world-class status with successful defenses over countryman Zolani Tete (TKO 5) and current WBO bantamweight world champion John Riel Casimero (TKO 5). He reclaimed the IBF world title in July 2017 with a narrow decision win over Muhammad Waseem and has since defeated a trio of Japanese challengers: Masahiro Sakamoto (TKO 10), Masayuki Kuroda (UD) and Akira Yaegashi (TKO 9).

Edwards (15-0, 4 KOs) has fought his last two bouts at junior bantamweight, but he returns to flyweight for a crack at one of boxing’s most celebrated champions. He last fought at flyweight in September 2019, dominating Rosendo Hugo Guarneros to win the vacant IBF International and WBO Intercontinental straps.

“Moruti is the most criminally underrated fighter, having not lost in 13 years, and he is a proper, proper threat,” Edwards said. “This is no gimme or easy world title fight — it is very, very far from that. I asked for this fight and, if you look back at press conferences or interviews, you can see that I have wanted it for some time. In my head, this is what was coming to me and it is finally here, and I have got what I wanted.”

SUNNY EDWARDS FIGHTS FOR WORLD TITLE ON APRIL 30

SUNNY EDWARDS WILL go into battle for the IBF world flyweight title against the formidable and decorated champion Moruti Mthalane on Friday April 30, live on BT Sport.

In what will be a high stakes card in London, Belfast star Michael Conlan (14-0) provides the chief support as he takes his first fight at Super-Bantamweight against the tough 14-2 Ionut Baluta. The Romanian is seeking to defeat a third consecutive Irish opponent after toppling TJ Doheny and David Oliver Joyce in his last two fights.

For ‘Showtime’ Sunny, 25, it will represent a first crack at world honours in his 16th fight as a professional, with the British super flyweight champion having won belts at both fly and super fly, including the IBF International and Intercontinental, along with the WBO International and European.

Since beating Ryan Farrag in October 2018, Edwards embarked on a run of six fights with titles on the line to cement his place in the world rankings.

Edwards is a confirmed admirer of his forthcoming opponent.

“Moruti is the most criminally underrated fighter, having not lost in 13 years and he is a proper, proper threat,” he pointed out. “This is no gimme or easy world title for Sunny – it is very, very far from that.

“I asked for this fight and, if you look back at press conferences or interviews, you can see that I have wanted it for some time. In my head, this is what was coming to me and it is finally here and I have got what I wanted.

“Now it is my chance to prove myself and this will be the best benchmark I could have. I have beaten Olympians and people who have mixed at European and world level, but this is real genuine world level. This is my introduction as I have not been there before.

“He is as legit as they come. A big puncher, 41 fights, 39 wins and 26 knockouts. If I go and do this, capture the world title in my 16th fight, nobody can really argue. This will qualify everything I have been saying – if I do it. Moruti is no pushover by any stretch of the imagination; he is a very, very, very good fighter.”

Mthalane, 38, is indeed recognised as one the greatest of all current champions, having won his first world title in November 2009 with victory over Julio Cesar Miranda for the vacant IBF flyweight title, which he followed up with successful defences over countryman Zolani Tete and current WBO world bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero.

After two further defences, the South African won the IBO flyweight title with a 2014 victory over Jetha Oliva and subsequently made three victorious defences of the belt.

He reclaimed his IBF title in July 2017 with a defeat of Muhammad Waseem and has since defeated Masahiro Sakamoto (TKO 10), Masayuki Kuroda (UD) and Akira Yaegashi (TKO 9).

“There can be no doubting that Sunny is up against a top-drawer world champion,” said promoter Frank Warren. “Mthalane possesses incredible experience and has beaten the leading guys around his weight, but I hope the timing is right for a changing of the guard at the top of the division.

“Sunny has demonstrated his readiness for taking on and, I hope, joining the elite and from his early days performing on our shows, I believed we had a special talent on our hands.

“It was up to us to recognise this by delivering the world title shot he craves and that is what we are doing. It will be a special night having Sunny fighting for a world title against a great champion.”

Edwards’ title tilt against Mthalane will represent the first fight of a new long-term promotional agreement with Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions.

“I am made up, I am absolutely made up,” reacted Edwards. “I have made it no secret that I wanted to be with Frank and I see my future with Frank. I am glad that, after months of back and forth, we have come to the agreement and we are both in a position where I am sure we are happy.

“Frank has given me the platform and helped me build my name so that anyone who tunes into BT Sport even semi-regularly will have probably seen one of my fights. Over the last year or two I have been on often and maybe BT lets me get away with being a little bit more cheeky than anyone else would!

“I like it, I like the relationship we have and I am looking to increase that going forward. I am a loyal person and, unless I am treated unfairly, I will never up sticks and leave on a whim. I have been with my trainer for seven years, my management team from the beginning and, ideally, I would like to be with the same promoter for my whole career.

“The fights and the opportunity I have had shows that my promoter and my network are happy with me so I can’t be any more happy with that and the position Frank has allowed me to put myself in. Without Frank, the platform of BT and my management it would have been hard for me to do so.

“I am grateful and delighted to have another long-term deal with Frank – my third one already and I am only 25! I genuinely mean this, I hope this is a relationship that lasts throughout my career.”

Frank Warren added: “I have never hidden my liking and admiration for Sunny and I am thrilled he is signed up with us for the long term. He is proving himself a major attraction on BT Sport, not just with his undoubted boxing ability, but also his personality that shines through in the way he goes about his work.

“Sunny is a character, no doubt about that, which is something the sport always needs and I shouldn’t think he ever finds himself lost for words. The thing with Sunny is he can back up what he says with huge natural talent that I am sure will excel on the world title stage.

“Operating at the highest level is the next step for Sunny and I am thrilled to deliver his world title shot on April 30. It is what he wants and what we want for him so all our efforts have gone into securing him his shot at the earliest opportunity and I cannot wait to see it happen and see another world champion added to our roll of honour.”

EDWARDS AND BRAITHWAITE COLLIDE AT COPPER BOX

SUNNY EDWARDS GETS his shot at the British super flyweight title when he takes on English champion Marcel Braithwaite for the vacant belt at the Copper Box Arena on December 21.

‘Showtime’ Sunny has already accumulated the WBO European, WBO International and IBF International titles at super flyweight, as well as the IBF International and WBO Intercontinental at flyweight in his 13 fights as a professional, while impressing the fans and BT viewers with his slick, speedy and slippery style, along with his sparky persona.

The 23-year-old has craved another domestic showdown since he put a big marker down in the division with a comprehensive schooling of the experienced former European champion Ryan Farrag in October 2018 and now it is another fighter from Liverpool looking to put a dent in his perfect record.

Braithwaite, 25, won his English belt by beating Craig Derbyshire for the second time in October and holds a record of 9-1 as a professional.

“I couldn’t be more happy, to be honest,” said Edwards on the British title match being made. “I had sort of given up on the prospect of fighting for the British title any time soon, which is why I made the move down to flyweight with a view towards world titles sooner rather than later.

“Then a few months ago Marcel called me out and then won the English title so it has all worked out that I finish the year with a British title shot. I have really been in the No.1 position for the last year at least.

“I wanted a fun fight, there is a bit of needle there and I think I am going to show complete levels. There will be very few people backing against me for this one but, at the same time, he is lively, he wants to have a go and this is his chance at the big time.

“He is going from boxing on small hall shows on small YouTube channels to boxing on BT Sport and he has got me to thank for that,” added Edwards, who went on to explain the backstory behind the spikey social media exchanges between the pair.

“He got offered the fight in June for July, I think it was. They turned it down and then a couple of weeks later he puts on Twitter that I am saying nobody will fight me and he will fight me before the end of the year.

“I went ‘fair enough’ and had my fights before he beat Craig Derbyshire – on a split decision – and now what he said is coming to fruition.

“Me and him actually used to be friends and shared rooms together on Team England and would support each other. Then, one day, he unfollowed me on Instagram because apparently I don’t like enough of his pictures.

“He has called me a bitch and I think he just got a bit excited with his little leather belt. On December 21 it will be a reality check for him and I just hope that no ghost injuries come out of nowhere and there is no U-turn.

“Like I said, he has got me to thank for this because the purse he is getting isn’t because he is Marcel Braithwaite, it is because he is fighting Sunny Edwards.

“For me, he is just a bang average fighter who is getting the opportunity just because he is British and nobody else wants it.”

For his part, Braithwaite sought to play down the discord and heaped praise on the accomplishments of his former amateur teammate.

“I’ve just won the English title so it is great to be straight in and it would be some story to beat him,” said the former bantamweight. “I am fighting against a world-ranked boxer, who has boxed internationally as an amateur and is expected to be the next big thing.

“It is a massive fight and one people want to see as well,” he continued, before explaining why he labelled Edwards a ‘bitch’ in a recent interview.

“What it was, a few months ago he claimed nobody would fight him for the British and I said in the most respectful way that I would. With that he just started talking bad about me and I didn’t understand why.

“If he genuinely wanted an opponent and someone said they would fight him, I thought he would be grateful. It wasn’t the case, so that is what it was about.

“I have never actually had a problem with him. I’ve heard what he’s said about Instagram and that is sly because nothing like that bothers me and I wouldn’t be that petty.

“I’ve always wished him well and been quite the fan of him. He is good to watch.

“I am a massive underdog and I’m not expected to win. Imagine if I did win! A Golden Ticket it would be.

“I want to keep things respectful, but whether he wants to is another thing. I am just looking forward to it, I have got a massive opportunity in front of me and I can only be grateful for it.

“Fighting at the Copper Box live on BT is what dreams are about. It is what you imagine as a kid when you think about being a professional boxer. Live on BT alongside big names like Daniel Dubois – it is massive and I am going to enjoy every second of it.”

Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions are heading to the Copper Box Arena to stage a bumper night of boxing on December 21st, which features the British super flyweight title showdown between Sunny Edwards and Marcel Braithwaite.
Unbeaten Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois (13-0) looks to continue his path of destruction against Japan’s Kyotaro Fujimoto (21-1). The WBC Silver Heavyweight championship and the WBO International Heavyweight belts will be on the line.

Light Heavyweight prospect and Love Island star Tommy Fury (2-0) makes his long awaited return to the boxing ring after winning the hearts of the nation on the popular ITV reality television show over the summer.

SUNNY SHINES A LIGHT ON CASIMERO

SUNNY EDWARDS SUSPECTS that Zolani Tete will be up against it when he defends his WBO world bantamweight title against John Riel Casimero at Arena, Birmingham on November 30.

The Filipino Casimero is mandatory challenger for the world title held by the explosive South African Tete and Edwards has seen close up the threat posed by the 30-year-old from the stable of ring legend Manny Pacquiao.

Edwards was in the camp of his brother Charlie when he unsuccessfully challenged for the IBF world flyweight title held by Casimero at the o2 Arena back in September 2016 and saw at close quarters the potent punching power possessed by the 28-4 man with 19 KO victims.

Not deterred by personal experience, Edwards has booked his seat for the return of Casimero to the UK in a fight that has got quality written all over it.

“Yeah, 100 per cent I am going down to watch that! ” said Edwards. “I have been wanting this fight for years.

“I genuinely believe – although people might think I am saying it because he beat my brother – that Casimero is very, very dangerous. Disgustingly dangerous, how powerful and explosive he is.

“Obviously he has had a good run of form recently as well so it is a real pick ’em.

“Tete has stalled a bit through injury recently and that has been a bit frustrating, but on his game he is right up there with the best. So is Casimero though and he is not a two-weight world champion for nothing.”

WBO world bantamweight champion Zolani Tete defends his title against mandatory challenger John Riel Casimero features on a stacked night of title action at Arena, Birmingham on November 30. British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Chris Jenkins makes a defence against Liam Taylor, Lerrone Richards also takes on Lennox Clarke for the Commonwealth and vacant British super middleweight belt, while East Midlands favourite Sam Bowen makes a second defence of his British super featherweight title against mandatory challenger Anthony Cacace. Sam Maxwell defends his WBO European super lightweight title against the also unbeaten Connor Parker from Derbyshire.

Hamzah Sheeraz will fight for his first major title at super welterweight, with thrilling prospects Dennis McCann, Shabaz Masoud, Eithan James and George Davey also featuring on the bill, along with talents from the local region in Nathan Heaney and River Wilson-Bent.

SATURDAY: Sunny Edwards—Hugo Rosendo Guarneros Flyweight Battle Kicks Off Full Day of Boxing on ESPN

(Sept. 12, 2019) — Sunny “Showtime” Edwards, half of one of Great Britain’s great brotherly duos, will face off against Mexican veteran Hugo Rosendo Guarneros for the vacant IBF International flyweight title Saturday afternoon from London’s historic York Hall. The card, presented by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, will begin streaming at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport streaming service.

The Edwards-Guarneros card will set the stage for Saturday’s most significant fight, lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s title defense versus unbeaten challenger Otto Wallin (ESPN+, 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT).

Edwards (12-0, 4 KOs), whose older brother is WBC world flyweight champion Charlie Edwards, is dropping down in weight after winning WBO European, WBO International and IBF International honors at super flyweight. He is 2-0 thus far in 2019, defeating Hiram Gallardo and Pedro Matos in statement-making performances that streamed live on ESPN+. Guarneros (16-2-2, 8 KOs) will be making his first ring appearance outside of Mexico but is coming off perhaps his most significant win to date, an eight-round unanimous decision over Luis Gerardo Castillo (26-1 at the time).

In other action:

  • A pair of unbeatens look to take the next step, as Brad “The Blade” Foster (11-0-1, 4 KOs) will defend his British and Commonwealth super bantamweight titles in a 12-rounder against Lucien Reid (8-0-1, 4 KOs). A young pro who has sparred the likes of WBA super flyweight world champion Kal Yafai, Foster hopes to close out his banner year with a win against Reid, a 25-year-old London native.

  • Light heavyweight prospect Zak Chelli (7-0, 3 KOs), a 21-year-old London native, will fight fellow unbeaten Kody Davies (9-0, 3 KOs) in a high-stakes bout scheduled for 10 rounds.

  • Dec Spelman (16-2, 8 KOs) will make the first defense of his English light heavyweight title against Shakan Pitters (12-0, 4 KOs) in a 10-round showdown. Pitters defeated Spelman via three-round unanimous decision last November as part of the Ultimate Boxxer II tournament. Pitters knocked down Spelman in the opening round.

  • Lightweight prospect Mark Chamberlain (3-0, 2 KOs) will see action in a four-rounder against Lee Connelly (7-48-4, 0 KOs).

“I WANT TO GO 10-0 WITH 10 KNOCKOUTS!” | HEAVY DUTY UNDERCARD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES FROM JOE JOYCE, BRYANT JENNINGS, LIAM WILLIAMS, SUNNY EDWARDS AND ARCHIE SHARP

HALL OF FAME promoter Frank Warren stages his bumper Heavy Duty card at London’s o2 Arena on Saturday (July 13) headed by the vacant British heavyweight title fight between Daniel Dubois and Nathan Gorman, live on BT Sport.

A press conference was held at the BT Studios this afternoon for the star-studded undercard that backs up the top of the bill fight.

Putney’s Joe Joyce defends his WBA Gold heavyweight title against Philadelphia’s former world title challenger Bryant Jennings. Clydach Vale star Liam Williams faces Frenchman Karim Achour for the vacant WBC Silver middleweight title. Croydon’s Sunny Edwards meets Mexican Hiram Gallardo for the vacant IBF International super-flyweight championship and Welling’s unbeaten Archie Sharp defends his WBO European super-featherweight crown against Cambuslang’s Jordan McCorry.

Here are a selection of quotes from today’s press conference.

FRANCIS WARREN

“The card is fantastic from top to bottom. These guys are stellar fighters and will win world titles.

Joe against Bryant is a genuine 50-50 and with Bryant’s experience at world level he knows what it’s all about. Joe is the Juggernaut though. He has made exceptional progress and is even better now with Adam Booth training him.

“Sunny is super talented and when I spoke to Tommy Frank’s promoter about a British title fight he said; ’No’.

“We are being treated in the super-featherweight division with men like Archie, but he has a hard fight on Saturday. Jordan is a real test for any of our super-featherweights.”

When Liam wins, we will request he is rated in the top five by the WBC. He is really enjoying his boxing and motivated to get in the world title mix. He has bigger ambitions than he has ever had before.”

JOE JOYCE

“I’m good, ready, had a good camp and incorporated what Adam Booth has taught me and I’m really excited because this is a big fight against a credible opponent.

“This is the biggest fight of my professional career so far. Let’s see if he runs or goes toe-to-toe.

“It might be 1-0 to him with Adam, but now is redemption. Adam has taught me not to be a sitting target and get my head off line.

“I want to continue my 100 per-cent KO ratio and go 10-0 all by knockouts. I will be happy for it not to go the distance, but I am happy going 12 rounds. I just want to line them up and knock them over.

“The winner of Dubois v Gorman is an option and hopefully I will have time to get changed and come out to watch it after my fight. It is a 50-50 fight. Dubois is very strong and if he lands you’re in trouble. Gorman is a lot slicker.”

BRYANT JENNINGS

“Joe pummels people but you could have pummel v pummel and if it’s gonna be rock ’n sock robot okay.

“It’s boxing and don’t ignore the possibility of anything happening. You can be almost chilling and suddenly over.

“I have always wanted the toughest fights so I’m not wasting my time. I have always wanted to know I belong there and this is that. I set out to win every single time.

“It isn’t in my DNA to lay down. That is something I can’t comprehend. To calculate the fact I am here to lay down they have got it wrong.

“His trainer Adam Booth has a thing with me and tried with Mike Perez but couldn’t. I won that fight. Joe’s trainer Adam and myself have history from that. I expect us both to bring our best.

“I have sparred Gorman. He is a phenomenal kid and the only way is up, but I can’t rate off sparring but he has potential. I haven’t watched Dubois.”

LIAM WILLIAMS

“Everything is going perfect. The move to Sheffield to train was the best move of my career and came at the right time.

“I am performing, happy with performances but I need bigger name opponents. I am too good for these guys, but I have a hard fight on Saturday. Achour has never been stopped. He has great experience and knows his way around, but I am in good form, getting better, stronger.

“You are going to see a devastating performance and I will be the first man to stop him. All I’m doing in Sheffield is training and resting. I am living the perfect boxer life.

“I one-million percent believe I will win a world title in a year. I am a lot more confident in my ability. When you’re young and cut corners you question yourself. I am doing it right.

“People think I am stupid, but although Gennady Golovkin isn’t a world champion I would love to fight him. I fear no man.”

SUNNY EDWARDS

“It seems I’m an avoided man by British fighters. It is frustrating as I would like to build my career the traditional way and win the British title, but that is not happening because I’m too much of a risk. I am open to fighting any British super-flyweight if it’s right.

“I have done the hard work to get on these TV bills and I want to stay busy. I’m in a good position and the only thing that can take that away is me not performing.

“I don’t study too much of opponents, but I just watch a bit and leave it to my trainer. Gallardo has never been stopped and won against unbeaten fighters. He is no mug and coming to win.

“I have never sold myself as a big puncher, but I am elusive enough that I don’t get too much damage.

“My Mum has had health problems but she will be there and I will box well enough for her to be happy. Her problems came five years ago and she is the perfect Mum. Maybe we’re living on borrowed time with her, but every day we get to see her and there are people in worst situations.”

ARCHIE SHARP

“It’s not about me doing a better job than Sam Bowen on McCorry. I have just got to win in style.

“He says he has the physical strength, but they all say that. He is going to be shocked because I have got stronger from when I beat Lyon Woodstock in my last fight.

“My footwork is phenomenal and always has been. On Saturday you will see that he will try and rough me up, but I should make easy work of it.

“Nobody is coming to my hometown and taking my belt. I am also starting to show I can put people away.

“The super-featherweight division is on fire. Jamel Herring the WBO world champion has mentioned my name so let’s see where we are after Saturday.”

Tickets for ‘Heavy Duty’ featuring Daniel Dubois v Nathan Gorman for the vacant British Heavyweight Title, plus Olympic silver medallist Joe Joyce v Bryant Jennings are on sale now. The show also features British Middleweight champion Liam Williams who clashes against France’s former European champion Karim Achour for the vacant WBC Silver middleweight crown. SUNNY SET FOR NEXT TITLE SHOT

SUNNY EDWARDS WILL bid to add the IBF International super flyweight title to his rapidly growing collection of belts when he fights at The O2, London on July 13.

‘Showtime’ Sunny, 11-0, has already wrapped the WBO European and International title belts around his waist following a hugely impressive run of form and he will come up against the 12-2 Mexican Hiram Gallardo on the ‘Heavy Duty’ card, which is headlined by the British title collision between Daniel Dubois and Nathan Gorman, as well as Joe Joyce taking on former world title challenger Bryant Jennings.

Gallardo, who has not previously fought outside of his native Mexico, is the holder of WBC Youth Silver flyweight title and Edwards has been closely following the form guide.

“I’ve seen one of his fights from when he boxed on a Golden Boy promotion in Mexico where he won, I think from the away corner against Jose Eduardo Nunez, who was 10-0,” reported the 23-year-old.

“He looks not a typical Mexican as he is a bit upright, is maybe 5ft 4″ or 5ft 5” and quite small for the weight, as most of them are. He looks fairly strong and has a good record boxing mainly at super fly, although he has boxed up to super bantam.

“It is another world ranking title and a good one for me to win because they insist on a high level of opponent. I said I want a hard fight because that is what brings the best out in me and that is what I’ve got.

“If I am as good as I think I am, I will get in the ring and beat these opponents,” added Edwards, who went on to reveal his annoyance over his mandated opponent for a British title shot being withdrawn following the purse bid process.

“I am bitterly disappointed that Tommy Frank has withdrawn from a British title against me because I think it is a fight that makes perfect sense in September. They didn’t even want to hear the purse bids because they weren’t interested in the fight.

“The funny thing is that, in an article they put out, they said that Tommy will go down the IBF route for the International title and so on. He must have been turned down by the IBF and because obviously I have been offered it now.

“So they refused to fight me for the British and now I am taking the title they were going after. They pulled out right at the last minute and that is not working in good faith.”
