Lee stops Teah in 3

Brandun Lee continued to be impressive in his early career as he stopped Samuel Teah in round three of a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout at The Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

In round three, Lee dropped Teah with a hard right. Later in the round, Lee landed a booming right to the face that sent Teah plummeting on his back, and the fight was immediately stopped at 1:43.

Lee, 139 3/4 lbs of La Quinta, CA is 22-0 with 20 knockouts. Teah, 139 lbs of Philadelphia via Liberia is 17-4-1.

“Honestly, I don’t think I learned a whole lot tonight. I knew he couldn’t outbox me. I knew he couldn’t outpunch me. I knew the knockout was going to come and that one was definitely one of my top one or two favorites so far in my career.

“This is probably my biggest accomplishment yet. It was a step up in competition and even the betting odds were way closer than usual. Most of the time, I’m a -5,000 favorite or something like that and this time it was only -1,000. I was getting a lot of DM’s on Instagram and Twitter of people telling me that Sam is going to be tough. Sam is going to beat you. But hopefully, the doctors check him out and everything is all good.

“We just got the IBO intercontinental belt so I would like to get my hands on the IBO world title next. But at the end of the day, it’s all up to my manager Cameron Dunkin.”

White stops Lopez in 6

Jordan White stopped Misael Lopez in round six of a scheduled eight-round junior lightweight bout.

In round six, White scored a knockdown with a hard right. Moments later, White landed a flush combination that sent Lopez down again, and the fight was stopped at 2:40.

White, 130 lbs of Waldorf, MD is 11-1 with nine knockouts. Lopez, 129 3/4 lbs of Denver CO is 10-1.

Steven Ortiz

“Honestly, I’d give myself a D. Only because I feel like I came out beautifully in the beginning and I stopped being consistent with the jab and stopped doing the things that were working. I hurt my right hand a little bit and he hit me in the back with a kidney shot that slowed me down a little bit, so I was upset at that. Besides that, we took on a guy that was 14-0 with 9 knockouts after a year-and-a-half layoff. Most guys would never do that.

“He was a good fighter. He was disciplined. If I didn’t have the long layoff, I would have stopped him. Guaranteed. I hurt him plenty of times. If I was just a little sharper and a little more consistent, I would have gotten him out of there.”

Ortiz Decisions Hill

Steven Ortiz won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jeremy Hill in a battle of undefeated lightweights.

Ortiz, 134 3/4 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 79-73 and 77-75 twice and is now 12-0. Hill, 134 3/4 lbs of New Orleans, LA is now 14-1.

Padilla Stops Velasquez in 5

Victor Padilla stopped Thomas Velasquez in round five of a scheduled eight-round bout of undefeated lightweights.

In round one, Velasquez landed a perfect counter right that sent Padilla down to the canvas.

In round five, Padilla rocked Velasquez with a right hook and and hurt Velasquez repeatedly until he fell on the canvas. With Velasquez hurt, Padilla rocked Velasquez several more times until the bout was stopped at 1:56.

Padilla, 134 lbs of Williamstown, NJ is 9-0 with eight knockouts. Velasquez, 135 lbs of Philadelphia is 10-1-1.

Victor Padilla

“You have to understand that I had a year off and there were a lot of emotions heading into this fight. My timing was a little off. I was trying to throw with a lot of power so that’s why I was missing so much. He wasn’t catching me but he was making me miss. By the start of the fourth round, I started to relax and I realized that when I started putting pressure on him he didn’t know what to do. I just needed to calm down and let the knockout come naturally.

“Next fight, you’re going to see a better me. That’s the plan. I’m growing. I’m just 22 years old. I’m growing in the sport and I’m growing as a man. I’m a lot wiser now. I’m happy for the opportunity and I thank SHOWTIME for the chance to show my talents. It wasn’t exactly the way we wanted, but we got the job done.

“Yes, he was making me miss a lot so I understand why I was behind on the scorecards. But I have power in both hands and that was always in my mind. I knew I was going to get him with one shot but there were just too many emotions. In the fifth round, I was completely calm and that’s when the knockout came.”

Thomas Velasquez

“I can’t say if the stoppage was early or not right away. I have to go back to the video and watch it. A fighter isn’t going to say that they should have called it.

“I was executing the game plan pretty well up until that point. It was just a real good punch that I didn’t see.”

Blood, Sweat & 50 Years: Padilla-Tomas Headlines Oct. 4 in Philly

Philadelphia, PA- Junior welterweights Victor Padilla, of Berlin, NJ, and Romain Tomas, of Brooklyn, NY, will square off in the main event Friday evening, Oct. 4, at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

The eight-bout card, labeled Blood, Sweat & 50 Years, will celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Peltz Boxing Promotions. The card is being promoted by Raging Babe (Michelle Rosado) with J Russell Peltz serving as the matchmaker. First bout 7:30 p.m.

Going old-school on this one, Peltz has scheduled the Padilla-Tomas fight for six rounds, harking back to the first two decades of the 20th century when all main events in Pennsylvania were limited to that distance.

The 20-year-old Padilla, originally from Vieques, Puerto Rico, is a southpaw with speed and power. He has won all five of his fights by first-round knockout. In fact, he has only been in the ring for a total of six minutes, 29 seconds, in those five contests. Although none of his five opponents had a winning record when he fought them-their combined mark was 17-29-1 at the time-Padilla still is considered one of the best young pros on the East Coast. He is promoted by Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment.

The 30-year-old Tomas is originally from Emerainville in the Seine-et-Marne region of France, outside Paris. He brings an 8-2 record into the fight with Padilla. Tomas is coming off his biggest career win, a six-round decision over previously unbeaten (7-0) Omar Bordoy in Bordoy’s nearby backyard of Hampton, NH.

“Some of the greatest fighters of all-time appeared in hundreds of six-round main events during those 20 years at the turn of the last century,” said promoter J Russell Peltz. “In my 50 years in boxing, this marks the first time I have been involved with a six-round main event. When you’ve never done something before, often that is the best reason for doing it.

“Hall-of-Fame champions like Jack Johnson and Benny Leonard boxed six-round main events in Philadelphia during those years,” said Peltz. “How about Stanley Ketchell vs. Sam Langford or Joe Gans taking on Jack Blackburn? I would have loved to have seen those battles. Lew Tendler, Abe Attell, Terrible Terry McGovern, Rocky Kansas, Philadelphia Jack O’Brien. Philadelphia was the boxing capital of the country and six-round main events was the norm.

“I’m an old-school kind of guy so this is going to be fun for me. This represents the past and Padilla vs. Tomas will give us a peek into the future.”

The undercard is topped by three additional six-round rematches.

Junior middleweights Roque Zapata, of Culpeper, VA, and Isaiah Wise, of North Philadelphia, meet in a rematch of their 2016 at the 2300 Arena, won by Zapata via majority four-round decision, the first loss of Wise’ career.

Zapata (6-2-4) also defeated Fred Jenkins, Jr., early in 2017 over six rounds in the same ring. Wise (7-2-1, 4 K0s) last boxed 10 months ago when he knocked out Andy Gonzales, of Worcester, MA, at the 2300 Arena.

Junior welterweights Gerardo Martinez, of Coatesville, PA, and Osnel Charles, of Atlantic City, collide in the other six-round rematch.

Martinez (4-1, 1 K0) earned a four-round majority decision over Charles (13-19-1, 2 K0s) at the 2300 Arena. While Martinez has been idle since, Charles picked up a four-round points victory in June over Laquan Lewis, of Brooklyn, NY, at the Parx Casino in Bensalem, PA.

North Philadelphia welterweight Marcel Rivers (7-1, 4 K0s) will fight in a six round contest.

Four-rounders scheduled for Oct. 4 include: Shinard Bunch, of Trenton, NJ, vs. Rakym Dyer, of South Philadelphia, welterweights; Christopher Burgos, North Philadelphia, vs. Tyree Arnold, North Philadelphia, junior welterweights; Vinnie Denierio, Elmira, NY, vs. Seifullah Wise, North Philadelphia, lightweights.

Lightweight Shamar Fulton, of North Philadelphia, also will appear in a four-round contest.

Tickets to “Peltz Boxing 50th Anniversary Celebration” are priced $50, $70 and $90. They can be purchased online at www.2300arena.com or by calling 215-758-2173 and/or 215-765-0922. Doors open at 6:30 pm and first bout is at 7:30 pm. Credential applications are due by Sept 20 and can be requested at ragingbabe.com/credentials. Blood, Sweat & 50 Years is brought to you by Rocco’s Collision and Cricket Wireless.

At just 20 years old, we look forward to his rise in boxing and to working again with his manager/trainer Chino Rivas,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “With a stellar background, devastating power, charisma and a great team behind him, Victor will become a big star in the sport. I can’t wait to see him in action on Thursday night as part of our Broadway Boxing UFC Fight Pass stream.”

Fighting out of the same camp as IBF Super Featherweight World Champion Tevin Farmer, Padilla, a native of Vieques, Puerto Rico, will make his DBE debut in a battle against Benjamin Borteye, of Silver Spring, Maryland, in a scheduled four-round bout this Thursday night, August 1, at the Monroeville Convention Center, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“My family and I are very thankful to Lou DiBella and the entire DiBella Entertainment team for believing in my talent and dedication toward becoming a world champion. I have never wanted something so badly,” said Padilla. “I lost focus for a short period of time where I was not fighting because my family was not by my side and it made it difficult for me. With the help of my trainer Chino Rivas and the rest of my team, I have no more worries. I have the full support of my family and I have never been happier or more motivated. All those that doubted me will regret it and those who believed in me will never question that decision. I look forward to making DiBella Entertainment proud on August 1 and for many years to come.”

Padilla turned professional in December 2016 after a stellar amateur career that included three National championships and a record of 90-7.
